Temasek Tower
Singapore, Singapore
HEIGHT: 235m/770 feet
FLOORS: 52 floors
COMPLETION: 1986
ARCHITECT: Architects 61/ Stubbins Associates
The 52-story cylindrical office tower provides a new image and office space for government departments and commercial organizations. Located on a prime site within Singapore's central business district, the 1,431,257-square -foot building comprises office space, retail shops, and an underground garage for 715 cars, and executive office areas.
The tower's rounded form minimizes the exposed surface area and therefore reduces energy consumption. Clad in painted aluminum spandrel panels and bronze-tinted insulating glass, the building is protected from the intense sun. The tower is notched on both the north and south facades to give the cylindrical form a sense of orientation and to integrate the tower plan configuration with that of the ground-level site development.
The site is bisected diagonally to provide pedestrian access from three corners. The eastern half of the tower is elevated to accommodate a triangular space-frame canopy for weather protection at both the lower entry and the ground -level pedestrian entries. A lower-level courtyard provides pedestrian and vehicular access to the VIP entry and reception, and lower elevator lobby. Seventeen double-deck elevators and two service elevators provide access to all levels. Underground pedestrian connections to adjacent buildings and to a new mass transit station occur at this same level.
Public lobbies, banking facilities, and offices occupy the first two floors. Floors 7 through 48 provide typical office floors of 19,600 GSF per floor, with the exception of the 30th and 31st floors which are given to restaurant/lounge, conference rooms, and kitchen areas. Executive offices are located on the 50th floor.
The tower's structural system optimizes the performance of its cylindrical form. The floor system, supported by radial steel trusses, is cantilevered 38 feet off a cast-in-place concrete core. This system allows wind and gravity loads to be transferred to the core and results in flexible column-free office space. The enclosed radial girders provide three-dimensional coffers that reinforce the circular design and provide high ceilings for indirect or direct lighting.

7.5/10 - I like the shape, with the "folds" running up the length of the cylindrical tower. The facade catches the light very well, and the darker windows provide a good contrrast.
But, while the tower does have some sleek elegance, it is still, from some angles, too boxy, and the roof oculd have been handled batter - how about a series of small setbacks at the top. making it more of a crown or spire? And maybe a setback or two nearer the base....

Temasek? doesnt that mean like "Lion City"? ive heard of that word. it has got something to do with the Merlion:?
RafflesCity
December 23rd, 2002, 12:52 PM
Temasek is the ancient (Sanskrit) name for Singapore. It means sea-village.
The merlion was inspired by a prince spotting a lion on the island centuries ago, hence the name was changed to Singapura.
Singa = lion, pura = city.

The building is elegant and still symbolyses the corporate power. This bulding's facade is so common, that it is rare since no one likes it, but it has made the simple stripe into somthing unique.
The difference in height of the windows on the left and right side of the building also diminishes a too-symmetrical look.

Having seen it in real life, I would give a higher rating of 9. It's very striking and elegant. The aluminium panels give it a glossy, smooth appearance and the colour makes it look aged and timeless. The public space at the base is excellent as well.

A summary to the last paragraph of 1st post, the tower has no perimeter columns.

I personally like the Circular-shape skyscraper very much, and this one is standing among the worlds finests.
The proportion, height and exaggerated top really make it stands out but the bronw-stone cladding and dark window gave the dated feeling eventhough they area very shiny, clean and reflective upclose.
