It's time for another round of nomination for our next One on One tournament. This thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=524747) has been discussing ugly skyscrapers for a while, and I figured I'd would be about time to figure out which one is the ugliest of them all.

One rule: you can nominate up to 3 skyscrapers but each one must be from a different city. Feel free to post images along your choices.

Happy nominating!

Just because someone has a different opinion than you doesn't mean he is trolling.

the thing is the majority of people have the same opinions and perceptions as i have.

how can someone put the finest and most iconic skyscrapers in her/his ugliest skyscrapers list.

on top of that, i don't find one world trade centre, empire state building, chrysler building, and the gherkin ugly AT ALL.

in fact they are vital icons and world class landmarks of those world class cities.

i highly doubt that you would agree with me or stay quiet if i did put frankfurt's top 3 finest skyscrapers in my top 3 ugliest skyscrapers list.

Some people on here don't realise the definition of "ugly", the empire state, Chrysler and Gherkin are some of the most beautiful skyscrapers these cities have. And the Gherkin doesn't ruin the London skyline, because it had NO skyline to begin with but the grey/ugly Tower 42, I can think of 100 buildings uglier than the Gherkin in London, hence why it won the 2004 Sirling prize and is now the most expensive office space in London due to it's popularity. Some people are just too ignorant to look past the boring blocks that dominate Chicago or Sao Paulo..

The left and center ones are fairly ugly, though there's plenty of boxy international style skyscrapers around the world that are much uglier than those.

You DON`T KNOW NOTHING, I MEAN NOTHING, CERO, NONE,NADAAAAA About architecture , Ok your post it is a TOTAL INSULT- to skyscraper world history.

Ok guys this Nomination start bad since. first of all their should be several "categories" just as in the oscar.

Ugliest skyscraper divided by:

-Modern or Recently build -ugliest. (here buildings which a lot of money was invested in just a horrible shape - for example lisboa hotel or the elephant or that wanna-be big ben in dubai)

-Ugliest from the past (30 yrs or older)

-Cheap buildings. buldings who where never intended to be build for being a "luxury office" or a city icon, but just a big apparment complex still the cheap investment, ugly arquitecture combined with null maintainance equals a horrible eye sore, for example those apaprtments in sao paulo or the building in milan.

Glad to see I'm not the only one here who disagrees with people's opinions but hey jetmty, there's no point arguing over it, the guy clearly hasn't been to any cities in the world and people insulting the Gherkin here are I think just a bit jealous, so honestly we have nothing to worry about? I mean the Chrysler and Gherkin have both won NUMEROUS architecture awards because of their beauty, honestly don't let some rogue get us down :)

I was pretty close to nominate the dildo-connection
Although they are ugly, they are to clean and short to be "spectacular-ugly" like my nominations and the cladding is okay

SO nominates Shard and Axe? That was quite unexpected

i highly doubt that sir norman foster and ranzo piano would give a shit about what some of you trolls think.

I suspect that the mods will know which responses to weed out.

MetLife Building. New York City, USA: Bland wall that is absurdly overbearing on the skyline.
Torre Agbar. Barcelona, Spain: The phallic nature of it, combined with a lack of similar architecture, or even just some tall buildings nearby, make it stick out like a sore thumb.
Tours Aillaud. Paris, France: I... don't really even know what to think of it, but none of the conflicting thoughts are of the positive sort.

Carnegie Hall Building. When I saw, I thought of a building built circa 1940-50, but it was built in 1991

the thing is the majority of people have the same opinions and perceptions as i have.
A fine specimen of pensée unique and argumentum ad populum! It could be used to prove that nobody should dislike Shakira's music, either. "She is perhaps the most iconic singer in the world and she is also a symbol of the powerful mainstream music industry!".

As far as trolling is concerned, I believe that trying to impose your own taste on architecture seems much closer to the definition than freely casting whatsoever nominations, as bewildering as they may be to some.

Remove the nice light show from the flame towers and they are just three stumpy and fat penguins, nothing special at all, again imho. If you have to rely on lights to make something look good, you've already lost.

Sorry world, but we will not let you pull Torre Velasca down. I respect tastes, when they are supported by knowledge.

Tower Velasca is perfectly integrated in the architecture of the center of Milan. You find it on school books in Italy, as an example of a building combining old and new architecture. Its shape recalls the Castello Sforzesco located nearby.

https://encrypted-tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRR4mskrwNwzk8-hvL6ElS8p8008amqCJxxGX0ApkZzb3g4M0yP

the tower is able to dialogue with the Duomo as well...

http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1167/5109848539_d8b16c239d_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/kamilluzza/5109848539/) old and new gotich (http://www.flickr.com/photos/kamilluzza/5109848539/) di kamilluzza (http://www.flickr.com/people/kamilluzza/), su Flickr[/IMG]

Its finitures are very elegant and high quality, considering it was built in the 50's.
Please notice the elegant layout of the windows, and the intentional "random" effect.

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4027/4224232877_f142121fee_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mardiam40/4224232877/)

Among all the highrises in the world, can anyone really think this is the ugliest building ever built? For real? A building thought and designed to fit the surroundings. Has anyone seen it live?

And besides, Tower Velasca is 99m tall. Can it be considered a skyscarper?

I agree that the Velasca Tower in Milan if far from ugly, it matches the Milanese skyline and sits well in context, a good example of using modern technology to emulate past architecture while still being modern. Similar to the Shard London Bridge emulating the many church spires of London.

The top and the bottom of the building aren't designed like an unified structure, and it fails at environment integration :ohno:

Please keep the Velasca tower outside of this contest since it is a brutalist building: its alleged ugliness is based upon its style, and it is considered to be a masterpiece of his architectural school and it has been designed by BBPR studio. Is it to ask too much to know something about architecture in an architectural forum? My God how low is the level here...so sad!

I was waiting for someone to say Genex Tower Belgrade,as a matter of fact that's just another example of brutalism,so you don't really hate the building, you hate the style.

People don't like it in general while some of us Belgraders love it.Because we have residential commieblocks we're used to it.

Im not sure if it's the very ugliest skyscraper in the world, as I haven't seen them all obviously, but if you say the words 'ugly skyscraper' the first image that comes to mind is ALWAYS Tore Agbar. It is so fugly as to almost be cool (I stress 'almost'). I know plenty of other people have already nominated it but I had to add my agreement.

And it isn't to do with phallic reasons like some people state, all scrapers are phallic to one degree or another, and you ony have to look at 40 St Mary Axe in London to see how a similar shape can look so outstanding, when the proportions of the building are done correctly, when there is a proper architect involved, when the cladding is classy and and the lighting scheme is suble and refined.

Tore Agbar is none of that, the shape is just....well it's a dildo lets face it, the proportions are all wrong, the cladding looks nasty and the lighting scheme....dear god, tacky doesn't even begin to describe it, it's like they thought "hey this knda looks like an electric dildo, why don't we make it look like one of those illuminated glowing dildos you'd expect to see in some cheap sex toy shop?"

It makes me depressed that Torre Agbar and 30 St Mary's Axe are all being nominated, they're some of my favorite buildings, both of which fit perfectly with their cities (e.g. Torre Agbar reflects the surrounding mountains and the mosaics of Gaudi's architecture, which have become a large part of Barcelona's street scene).

Just becuase they're slighly phalic in shape doesn't make them ugly. And for those saying that the Gerkin ruined London's skyline, don't worry, it will soon be masked by other skyscrapers, including the even less good looking 20 Fenchurch Street, so you wont have to look at it for much longer. Also, the fact that it came second in the Eurocup says that the majority of people don't find it ugly at all.

Rant over

krkseg1ops
August 12th, 2012, 02:09 PM
This is just your personal opinion, not a rant, and you are fully eligible to voice it. Some people, however, do not understand anything outside their mindset, ie. Chrysler/ESB/Gherkin are somehow revered by those people and any statement bashing these buildings is met with aggression. I suggest some of you here stop shoving those up our asses and accept the fact that beauty is in the eye of beholder.

Me for myself I love Eureka-Tower. Only because someone nominates this tower does not make him a troll.

Come on, let's have a bit of common sense on the thread?

Trellick is a Brutalist building so it's no surprise that it's grey it supposed to be this way and you can love this weird futuristic style. Eureka on the other hand is just mediocre postmodernism with rather cheap-looking cladding, far too big for such a poor design :ohno:

Sorry but then you don't know very much about the tower.

Eureka tower was built to honour the Eureka Stockade of 1854. The gold box represents the gold mined at Ballarat, and the reason for the Stockade. The red line coming from the gold box represents the blood that was spilled.

It is actually a very cleverly designed tower with real cultural significance.

I have to admit although I love Q1, Eureka Tower is damn ugly. Yes although there are FARRR uglier, it's such a disspointment with all that money and all that height they should have come up with something more elegant and beautiful looking, instead it just looks so skinny and... rubbish? Please don't get offended people have offended the Gherkin beyond belief here so I know what it feels like, but personally I just feel they could have done better..

Even if you do think that, it’s clearly not anywhere near the ugliest in the world. Not even top 100 by a long shot. It's pointless to nominate Messeturm or the Gherkin because they will lose in the first round to something that is genuinely ugly. It's just pointless, and a wasted opportunity to nominate something genuinely bad.

Because I don't believe it will turn out looking so great as it does in the render! :( yes it's unique in that picture but I am just in disbelief that something that unorthodox can turn out good haha. Don't worry I wouldn't nominate it in the top 100 ugliest but deffo not in the top 50 best

We have to admit, if he shall let the others nominate St.Axe he should be allowed to nominate Messetower. Both are of course not the most ugliest builings in the world.

The main reason is, why many buildings are nominated which are sure not the ugliest buildings is.

Frist- It is impossible to know every building in the world. Thats why there is a nomination thread. Different people from the world with different knowledges can introduce unknown towers.

Second- some buildings stand for different styles or worthes or whatever. If you have serious problem with Brutalism - and it seems obvious that many people here have one - you may nominate one of the most important and main buildings of this style, a buildings that had a huge impact on this style and on following buildings - for example Torre Valesca. It is not typical SSC, as complained in this thread, that people are haters or idiots, if they nominate thoose buildings, unfortunatley it is typical SSC, that people are bashed as trolls or irgnorant, if the don't share same tastes or opinions.
SO143s hate on Frankfurt (for whatever reason) and his love for glass claddings are well known in this forum. So I am sure he is close to a heart attack if he sees the Messetower - the "landmark" tower of Frankfurt and a symbol for anti-class-cladding - on a picture, so for him its one of the ugliest things around, as for other people is St.Axe or Valesca.

Third: Some towers, who may work well as a single tower, have some bad impacts on the skyline and towers around. This contribute to a bad overall appearance. My nomination -MetLife building- is as a single tower sure not the ugliest peace of work you find in this world, but I don't know a tower that destroys the surrounding skyline with the same impact. Most towers around or nearby are elegant and slim - like chrysler - and suddenly between them there is a gigantig, grey shaded and boring domino-brick
