KOZHIKODE: In a bid to revive the Steel Complex Limited (SCL), the only mini steel plant in Kerala, the state government has decided to handover another 25% of the company's shares to the country's largest steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited (Sail). With 75% of the shares in its kitty, Sail will become a majority shareholder of the firm and will be in a position to take policy decisions.

Sail had already signed a joint venture (JV) with SCL for a 50:50 partnership and the shares of the company were transferred to Sail in December 2010. Meanwhile, chief minister Oommen Chandy has entrusted additional chief secretary V Somasundaram to expedite the transfer of shares.

He will formally express the state government's willingness to handover 75% equity of SCL to Sail during his visit to Delhi as part of the meeting of the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction on August 21. Apparently the 50:50 pact between the two firms seems to have failed to turnaround the company.

The JV had envisaged setting up of a rolling mill to produce 65,000 metric tonnes of steel a year. However, paucity of funds hit the plan. Though the management control was even then with Sail, the chairman was appointed by the state government.

The decision to handover additional 25 per cent equity was taken on the basis of a meeting held by M K Raghavan MP with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and industries minister Kunhalikutty in Thiruvananthapuram on August 3.

"The chief minister has agreed to expedite the work. The Rs 64-crore rerolling mill will materialize only if the SCL hands over the majority of its shares to Sail,'' M K Raghavan said.

Taking over of the SCL by SAIL has been one of the long-pending demands of the employees of the SCL. The SCL has around 200 employees which include around 120 permanent staff and rest of them appointed on daily wage and contract basis.

"At present we don't have job security. We will get all the benefits of central government if Sail takes over the firm, ''said K Shaji, president of the Steel Employees Union (affiliated to INTUC).

He said the takeover will bring in more accountability and improve production as funds won't be any issue. Though the plan was to produce 2,000 metric tonnes of steel per month, SCL currently produces only 1,000 tonnes due to unavailability of scrap.

The Group has around 320 acres in Mavoor, where it established production facility for Gwalior Rayons in 1960s and later changed the name to Grasim Industries, according to information available.
The Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development, the apex body for development projects spearheading the company's CSR activities, has submitted request with the relevant authorities with the government for approval to set up the training centre in Mavoor.

The centre is expected to offer training in different segments like hospitality and computer related jobs, plumbing and electrical works. Once they get the approval, the training centre would come up and the target is to train around 10,000 people every year.

The company closed down the plants at Mavoor in 2001, pointing that the closure is "primarily due to non availability of raw materials and the resultant poor quality of fibre and overall unviable operations," according to a company report.

According to Grasim Industries' annual report for the year 2001-02, the company has provided Rs 55 crore during the fiscal year towards payment to the 2,300 employees at its Mavoor plants, and an obsolescence charge of Rs 19 crore towards value of fixed assets retired from active use. "Importantly, the closure of the Mavoor plants translates into savings in recurring expenditure on employees and other standing charges to the tune of Rs 27 crore annually," said the report.

Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development currently conducts skill development and vocational training through Aditya Birla Technology Park for integrated training programme and has Vocational Training centres at most of our plants in collaboration with Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). It is providing training in around 10-15 sectors, said company officials.

The apex body is planning to spend around Rs 150 crore in the year for its regular activities. It is currently indulged in activities related to education, healthcare and family welfare, sustainable livelihood including agricultural and livestock development, microenterprises development, infrastructure development and social causes like dowry-less marriage and widow remarriage and women empowerment.

if only some part of land is proposed for this , fine,, other parcel of land should be for non pollution kind of industries...

govt should not allow them to have only a training institute in such vast land , especially when there is atmost shortage of land for projects generating job opertunities

Mobile concrete testing lab inaugurated

KOZHIKODE: A full-fledged mobile concrete testing laboratory launched by Dalmia Tech was inaugurated at a function held at Hotel Malabar Palace on Tuesday.

The mobile laboratory enables testing of quality of building materials like cement, bricks, sand and coarse aggregate which influence the quality of concrete. The laboratory set up inside a van will make available full-fledged concrete testing facilities at construction sites. The testing will be offered free of cost.

Officials of Dalmia Tech Mobile, a venture of Dalmia Cements, said the laboratory facility will be made available at the sites and tests worth Rs 50,000 would be offered free of cost.

They said there have been numerous instances of building collapses due to the use of sub-standard building materials. The initiative would help customers to ensure quality of materials that are used for concreting and building construction at the site itself, they said. The services of a civil engineer will also be made available in the mobile laboratory.

Invex-2012, a two-day investors’ meet of small and medium entrepreneurs (SME) from Malabar, will witness the inking of 19 memorandum of understandings (MoU) for joint ventures in partnership with leading players in the sector.

The meet, organised by the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in association with the Emerging Kerala initiative of the government, will begin at Gateway Hotel here on Friday.

Over 300 potential investors are expected to participate in the event.

KCCI functionaries said Non-resident Keralites (NoRKs) were expected to promote the newly planned ventures. The total investment expected to be mobilised for the 19 projects in education, healthcare, hospitality and infrastructure was about Rs.1,700 crore.

The first MoU will be exchanged in the presence of Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb on Friday.

The highest investment is likely to come in the hospitality sector. As per the final list, a total of Rs.600 crore will be invested in this sector for three projects.

In the education sector, eight projects are on the cards at an investment of Rs.300 crore.

The healthcare and infrastructure sectors, too, have evoked good response. Eight projects are going to take wings in these sectors.

In the healthcare sector, some of the small and medium entrepreneurs have proposed to invest Rs.400 crore. Altogether, five projects will be launched.

Most of the confirmed projects are coming up in Malappuram, Wayanad and Kozhikode. In addition to the health, education, and hospitality sectors, infrastructure development projects too have invited investor interest. Three projects at an investment of Rs.400 crore will be finalised during the meet.

For giving a clear direction to the participants, panel discussions will be organised on Friday and Saturday in the presence of experts from the Kerala State Industries Development Corporation, Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, and Infrastructure Kerala Limited.

KOZHIKODE: The delayed Rs 65-crore steel rolling mill project of the Steel Complex Ltd (SCL), Kozhikode, got a much-needed fillip after the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) asked the two main shareholders -- the Government of Kerala and Steel Authority India Ltd (Sail) -- to complete the formalities for setting up the mill in two months.

In a hearing held in New Delhi on Tuesday, the BIFR judge took serious note of the fact that work on the project, envisaged two years ago as part of the MoU signed between Sail and the state government, has not started yet. It directed the government and Sail to raise 30% of the project cost, which works out to Rs 19.5 crore, within eight weeks.

According to sources, who attended the hearing, though government representatives wanted Sail to increase its share capital in the company by 25% to 75% and make it a subsidiary of Sail, the judge asked the company to raise capital for the steel mill project which was crucial for the rehabilitation of the company.

Kozhikode MP M K Raghavan said the BIFR directive would jumpstart the much delayed steel mill project which has been hanging fire for two years. "We are hopeful that Sail and the government would complete the process within the stipulated time frame," he said. SCL, which was referred to the BIFR in 1992, got a fresh lease of life in 2008 when it signed an MoU with Sail paving the way for Sail to acquire 50% stake in the company and takeover its operations in February, 2011.

KOZHIKODE: The corporation authorities have decided to set up more industrial parks to help aspiring entrepreneurs set up units.

These parks will be set up with government, semi-government and private participation in the newly-merged grama panchayats of Elathur, Beypore and Cheruvannur-Nallalam and Nellikkode industrial estate.

The move will accelerate the growth of the city where many developmental projects like UL cyber park, government cyber park (Thondayadu), marine park (Beypore) and knowledge park (Ramanattukkara) are coming up, the corporation feels.

It will also take steps to create more such industrial estates in the land available. Plans are afoot to set up a skill development centre in the Elathur industrial estate to impart training for beneficiaries in short-term courses in stitching, embroidery and toy making.

"Setting up of mini industrial estates will enable tapping opportunities in the industrial sector," said mayor A K Premajam. The provision to set up industrial estates is included in the 12th five year plan and budget presented for the year 2012-2013.

"We have 29 plots in the Nellikkode industrial estate. Twenty five of them have already been auctioned and the rest will be auctioned soon," she said.

The prospect of setting up the proposed Zamorin’s Furniture Consortium in the district has brightened with the decision of the District Industries Centre to forward the proposal for the final approval of a State-level technical committee.

The project, expected to give a boost to the native style of furniture manufacturing, will come up at Mandankavu, near Naduvannur, with a modern common facility centre having world-class amenities.

As per the proposal, the Zamorin’s Furniture Consortium, which will include all potential furniture industrialists in the district, will be set up at a cost of Rs.15.84 crore. A committee formed to realise the venture has already identified five acres of land to set up the building facilities.

According to the Consortium leaders, it will seek Rs.10.50 crore from the Union government and Rs. 3 crore from the State government. The industrialists aligned to the consortium will contribute Rs.2.34 crore for the venture.

KOZHIKODE: Industrial sector in north Kerala is expected to get a boost with the full-fledged functioning of the tool room-cum-training centre of the Kerala Small Industries Development Corporation Ltd. (SIDCO). The centre, located at Parapparakkunnu near Pantheerankavu, is expected to offer direct job to 150 persons and indirect job opportunity to 450 persons.

The work of the centre was completed spending Rs 12.5 crore. The centre is expected to start full-fledged functioning by February. The centre would appoint more technically efficient staff. Sidco has already sought the assistance of the Public Sector Recruiting and Internal Auditing Board for recruiting engineers.

The centre has the infrastructural facility to manufacture tools for drilling, turning and boring activities of defence and aerospace departments. The precision tools unit at Olavanna will manufacture high-precision tools and dies for defence, aerospace, railways and other sectors and micro, small and medium industries. Products including jigs, cutting tools, gauges, plastic moulds, forging dies and pressure castings will be manufactured at the unit by using computer-aided designing and manufacturing technology.

"Presently we are receiving orders from small engineering units. Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) has also placed a few orders recently," said Dileep Raj, manager, Sidco tool room-cum-training centre. "We are expecting to receive more industrial orders with the expansion of the unit," he added.

KOZHIKODE: The district's footwear industry is looking forward to a classic David versus Goliath fight. After emerging as the country's second largest footwear manufacturing hub, a bunch of footwear manufacturers here are aiming to take on the Chinese who have a stranglehold over the international market.

At least 30 city-based manufacturers have already gone global, shipping footwear to the Middle East and Far East markets. Buoyed by the initial overseas success, the industry has set an export target of Rs 500 crore in five years.

It was the footwear boom that had helped the district tide over the domestic industrial gloom after the traditional mainstays like timber, tiles and textiles collapsed. The sector, which has clocked over Rs 700 crore in domestic sales, has also created at least 25,000 jobs.

Manufacturers claim that their products are hugely successful among customers in Singapore, Malaysia and across Middle East countries. "We have been able to export products worth Rs 50 crore so far this year but this is just a scratch in the market. We have realized that the future is in the international market," said V Noushad, chairman of the footwear sector of the Kerala Small Scale Industries Association (KSSIA).

They are aiming to secure the Town of Export Excellence status in footwear sector for Kozhikode. "The sector has been growing at 40% for the past five years. The only factor that is holding us back is the lack of qualified personnel in design and production. The Footwear Design and Development Institute campus would help us address this issue," Noushad said.

Sources said the development of a container terminal at Beypore port is also vital for the industry.

Giving a fresh lease of life to the city’s famed wood industries, the newly formed Zamorin’s Furniture Consortium, with the backup of over 32 potential industrialists in the sector, is planning to set up a Quality Component Development Centre at Manthankavu near Naduvannur in the district.

The project, which already obtained clearance from the MSME Department of the Central government, will offer world-class amenities to the small industrialists in the sector for the quality designing and development of furniture components at an affordable rate.

The consortium has already purchased four acres of land for the project, mobilising a fund of Rs.1.2 crore from their members.

World class machines — the main attraction of the project — will be supplied by the government at a subsidised rate and the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) will finance the project on completion of its formal appraisal process.

In the first phase, a 43,500 sq ft building will be constructed on the project site, which could safely house a series of imported modern processing and designing machines worth Rs.11 crore from countries like Germany and Taiwan. Over 60 varieties of high-end machines will be imported for the venture.

The construction works of the common facility building will begin soon after getting approval for the building plan and clearance from the SIDBI. In the second phase, more or less 150 workers will be appointed to manage the activities of the centre.

“The main aim of the collective venture is to preserve the fame and tradition of Kozhikode in the furniture industry and offer modern amenities to the small entrepreneurs in the sector to come out with export-quality products,” says M. Gangadharan, Chairman of the Consortium.

The furniture consortium, which has the support of the Industries Department, is also looking into the scope of establishing a mega Furniture Park in Kozhikode.

Kerala Encourages NRIs to Invest in State

Kochi: Kerala has stepped up efforts to encourage NRIs to invest in various sectors of the state, an official said.


The government at the 11th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) being held here Jan 7-9 will Wednesday announce separate facilities for NRIs for investments in the service, industry, electronics and consumer sectors.


After the success of the Technopark-TBI (Technology Business Incubator), the state government is all set for the NRI-TBI, K.C. Chandrasekharan Nair, managing director, Technopark-TBI told IANS.


The TBI identifies potential entrepreneurs with innovative ideas, nurture them through different phases of growth, until the business takes off to a maturity level.


"This is going to be launched with the full support of the centre which has extended an initial funding of 2.5 crore. To start with, we will launch one each at Kochi, Kollam and Kozhikode," said Nair.


The Technopark-TBI has so far incubated more than 165 start up technology firms in their incubation facilities in the past nine years, with a success rate of over 96 per cent.


"If the Technopark-TBI is for IT, the three NRI-TBI's would have a larger canvas and would have sectors like the service industry, electronics and other sectors," the official said.


"We will provide a space which would be around 250 to 300 sq.ft and provide them all the facilities...Besides being a plug and play facility, the members will get an address to start with," said Nair.


All those who come in and begin their enterprise will have to move out of the centre in three years time.


"We have been getting a good number of inquiries and we felt that the PBD is the place where we could launch this," said Nair.

The first coconut biopark in the country would start functioning at Kuttiyadi in Kozhikode district within a year, it was announced at a meeting for investors in the coconut sector here on Friday. P.P. Thomaskutty, executive director of Kerala Industrial Development Corporation, also announced at the programme financial support and infrastructural facilities for investors who come forward to start coconut-based industrial units.

T.K. Jose, chairman, Coconut Development Board who also spoke, announced 25 per cent subsidy for investors. It was also announced that the State Industrial Corporation had already acquired 135 acres at Velam, near Kuttiyadi, for the proposed coconut park.

Among the products that could be made are packed coconut water with a shelf life of six months, coconut ice-cream, Virgin coconut oil and honey. The park would also have facilities for making furniture using wood from coconut tree. Coconut Board director K Muraleedharan; marketing officer Deepthi Nair; technical officer Mrudula Nair; Kerafed chairman Manayath Chandran; and Alok Kumar Saboo, president, Malabar Chamber of Commerce; also participated in the investors’ meet.

The Footwear Design and Development Centre (FDDC), an initiative to train and employ unskilled workers in footwear making, is all set to launch an exclusive footwear stitching unit for women at Kolathara on Friday.

The Minister for Social Welfare and Panchayat M.K. Muneer will inaugurate the unit, which is envisioned as a step at empowering women by providing them self-employment.

The unit is being funded by footwear raw material manufacturers Huntsman International, the representatives of which had evaluated the performance of the FDDC units. Over the past six years, the FDDC has in association with the Kudumbahsree Dsitrict mission trained 1,048 individuals in Cheruvannur, Nallalam, Panangad and Feroke in various skills related to footwear manufacturing.

Around 410 women, trained by the FDDC, are running small footwear units of their own and another 250 are employed in larger firms, a release from the centre says.
