Former minister and ex-Israel Defense Forces chief of staff Rafael Eitan, 75, drowned Tuesday morning after falling into the water at Ashdod port.
Magen David Adom paramedics at the scene attempted without success to resuscitate him.
Eitan's vehicle was found abandoned near the port's docks.
Police believe Eitan fell from a breakwater into rough seas off the port and disappeared for a number of minutes before he was found and pulled from the water.
Police forces and Israel Navy soldiers, aided by a helicopter, spotted Eitan in the water and extricated him with the help of a naval vessel.
Ashtrom reported that the last contact with Eitan was around 7 A.M. Tuesday morning. He called from a cellular phone to senior company officials to report on the state of equipment at the site following an overnight storm.
Ashtrom officials said the conversation was disconnected and after they were unable to reach Eitan on his phone a search and rescue force was dispatched to the area.
Yair Avishar, a MDA paramedic who arrived at the scene of the incident, said: "A naval ambulance crew and another ambulance crew from the port, which is situated there on a permanent basis, gave Eitan first aid and attempted to resuscitate him. We continued trying to revive him? but after half an hour had past the doctor declared him dead."
Police continue to investigate the exact circumstances of Eitan's death.
Transportation Minister Meir Sheetrit ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the circumstances of Eitan's death.
Eitan worked at the port as the director of a project conducted by the Ashtrom company.
The construction of the new section of the Ashdod port is currently reaching completion and its official opening has been delayed a number of times over the past few months due to various reasons.

duh, he was chief of staff, of course he's responsible of the deaths of many people. That's part of the job. And of course that they don't feel that way. They don't feel anything, for that matter. They're dead.

The tens of thousands of dead civilians in Lebanon, which it was his idea to invade. He knew civilians would die, but he obviously didn't mind.

Actually it was not his idea to invade Lebanon. And the war to drive the PLO out of Lebanon was justified. More Arabs died as a result of Arafat and his bloody wars in Jordan and Lebanon than from the Israeli efforts to rid Lebanon of the cancer that was Arafat and his thugs. But back to the subject. It was not his decision or idea to move into Lebanon.

No need for that. He hasn't even demonstrated responsibility for any deaths. Fandango just likes to be full of hatred. It gives him pleasure.

Sharon and Eitan said they would only go about 60km from the border to create a buffer zone, but they went all the way to Beirut. And don't call me full of hatred. You're the one who's devoted to excusing what the world clearly sees as wrong and cruel.

first of all, we didnt reach Beirut, and to be honest, its really too bad we didnt reach there because if we would continue to Beirut, Cairo and Aman like we wanted (and the americans stopped us) we could end this conflict once and for all by teaching them its better to focus on some other things than war and terror.
secondly, you can be blind or stupid if you think that the world see what were doing as wrong and cruel, the world doesnt see it that way, its the arab muslems who sees it that way and its the EUROPEAN arab muslems who affect the government in Europe to see it in their way, I have lived in europe and i have alot of family and friends there, trust me, i know how the people over there think and do, they do not see us that way, they just doesnt care whats happenning here..its non of their business. the only people in the world that see Israel's act as you said are the arabs! not the European and of course not the Americans.

He was a great military leader...studied some of his doing with the IDF before...sorry to see him go. Do wonder what the circumstances were...did he get trapped under something or could he just not swim...I must assume he got trapped soon after the fall seeing as I expect any military man to be a decent swimmer.

he was on the port in the middle of a storm and he fell to the water...he did know how to swim, but you can not resist the power of nature, its too strong for anybody not to mention a 80 year old man...may he rest in peace.

You're living in fantasy land. Israeli forces reached Beirut. And almost every country would like to see Israel stop it's occupations and violation of human rights. Your only friends are America, who are almost as unpopular than Israel and have absymal foreign policy, and tiny pacific nations you bought off.
He was a great military leader... So what's a non jewish person's life worth to you? Because a minimum of 20,000 civilian deaths while trying to get to a third party, shouldn't impress anyone.

Ok that makes sense...didn't mean to offend anyone. I was just wondering how an able bodied man drowned...the explanation makes perfect sense though...I have been caught in simple undertows before...its hell...Btw...whats got Fandango...its like all he can see is the Zionist Bastards out to Kill all NonJews...sure there have been atrocities...from both sides. Yet until the Palenstinians figure out that their tactics don't go over well in many parts of the world...whether they see it as their only option or not...its obviously not working...time for plan B.

Fandago for the people here that didnt get it yet is an arab or has some arab connections...of course there is always the option that he is a retard but lets not get to that now, he is blind and he is getting his wrong info from the media which is controled by arabs (at least in europe).

You are sick. It is unclear if you just accept the lies you are told or if you are worthless and perpetuate them on your own. Either way, you do not know anything about the subects of which you speak. Nothing.
War is a terrible thing. Except, in your eyes, when Jews are killed. Then it becomes noble. You are a very pitiful person.

The only sick and pitiful person is you and your "chosen" friends. Maybe Israeli text books dont show that Israeli forces reached Beirut, or apparently anything that protrays Israel in an unflattering manner, but I doubt they're worth the paper they're written on. Oh and apparently shooting unarmed men, at point blank range is not unethical or immoral (http://au.news.yahoo.com/050105/21/sg0t.html) in Israel. What can you expect from a country run by a war criminal though? Oh, and you people need to get your eyes checked, because I rarely talk about the actions of Palestinians, just Israelis.
