View Full Version : Melungeons: The First Turks of America
Istanbullu November 24th, 2004, 12:51 PM This is really an interesting subject.
In America there 250.000 Americans who call themselves as Melungeons(in Turkish: Meluncan) and say they are the sons of Turks, Spaniards and Portuguese.
They have surnames very similar to Turkish surnames. They visit Turkey every year to seek their ancestors.
The most famous Melungeons are: Abraham Lincoln and Elvis Presley.
They have a website: www.melungeons.com
What you guys know about Melungeons?

Forumlarında biri Meluncanlar Türk mü diye anket yapmış, 52 si ezici çoğunlukla evet demiş.
İlginç...

Renzo November 26th, 2004, 11:18 AM There is a great quantity of Turks and of Ottoman descendants in Argentina, which of course also is in American Continent.
Istanbullu November 26th, 2004, 11:26 AM That's right they were mainly Ottoman Levents(sailors) that were taken as slaves by Spanish. :)
Istanbullu November 26th, 2004, 11:29 AM btw They mention Elvis Presley probably having Portuguese roots, His name Elvis is coming form a Portuguese town Elvas.
Also they mention Abraham Lincoln having a Turkish grandfather named Ibrahim. I also read that in a book of Ferhan Sensoy.
Interesting...

I have read about that in a book too. They are actually not Turks. Though they arrived to the continent with Ottoman passports they are Arabic decendants. Another fact that supports my argument is that they don't even speak (know) Turkish.

He may have portuguese roots but i don't think it has anything to do with his name because the name elvis is used by the americans.
Istanbullu November 27th, 2004, 10:36 AM Was it used before Elvis Presley too? I mean the name Elvis?
outback November 28th, 2004, 05:04 AM I'm not sure about that but i've just found a website about american names. For elvis it says it means wise and is of scandinavian origin

ASIMOV December 5th, 2004, 09:35 AM Abraham Lincoln = Ibrahim Limonkolonya

If you mean the Turks living in south America, you are wrong. Actually Mediterranean sea was always a Turkish lake until 18th century, thanks to Greeks. Turkish pirates were really active there. Even USA had to pay fee to Ottoman Empire for the security of her fleet.
These guys immigrated from arabic lands of Ottoman Empire in the beginning of 20 th century and went to South America. They are called El-Turco although they are not Turkish (for instance Carlos Menem, Shakira, Farid Camillo Mondragon, etc...). They are Arab. No Turk went there as far as I know. I remember, Mondragon and Shakira' s families are from Lebanon, Carlos Menem is from Syria.
Allan December 20th, 2004, 06:41 AM ^
True.
That's what I read in a book too.

yes, but most of them are "arabs" from the mediterranean countries, and most of them are christian. They were not muslin arabs. In fact, most of them are not ethnic arabs also. Most of them are pretty white, european looking (not ALL). Maybe they are descendants of the crusaders? :)
