hey hyacinthus new avatar! is that an angel? I like the previous one cos it matches your name :D

Hyacinthus is also the name of a Greek vegetation divinity who was loved by both Apollo and Zephyrus. He returned the love of Apollo, but not of Zephyrus. When he and Apollo were throwing the discus together, Zephyrus blew Apollo's discus out of its course. It struck the head of Hyacinthus and killed him. From his blood Apollo made spring up a flower, the hyacinth.

The angel is taken from a Christmas Tree. Can you guess which Christmas Tree? ;)

Purple thing is the flower - Hyacinth :) It's a sweet smelling bulb flower. Costs about $6 per stalk. From Holland.

Nice SG commieblocks up there, redstone! :okay:

As to hyacinth the forumer (welcome! ) and hyacinth the plant: I hadn't heard that story of Greek saga. What a sad and lovely tale! :) I know the flower well, it grew in my grandmother's garden.

@Raffi: water hyacinth is different from the species shown in hyacinth's current avatar. In fact, water hyancinth can be an invasive pest plant, covering large stretches of a body of water and sucking the life out of it. :(

And back to the thread topic: redstone, may I say again that I'm thrilled that you got your camera! Please keep those photos coming! :)

http://img196.exs.cx/img196/1558/chenwenhsihousenhb8ft.jpg

1908 - 1991
http://www.knowledgenet.com.sg/singapore/SG/BI/BICWH001.jpg

Here's his biography
Chen Wen Hsi was born in China in 1908. Growing up in a village in South China with fish, sparrows, egrets, ducks, chickens and geese allowed him to study these animals closely. Later on these animals and birds were to populate his paintings. He was also attracted to the village craftsmen painting bright, colourful decorations in and on the houses of the village in times of celebrations. These early experiences spurred him to rebel against his family's ambitions for him to be a lawyer and to take up the painting brush instead. "My choice so infuriated my uncle that he waved a chopper in my face and explained that art was like the blunt edge and I should take up law, which would give me a cutting edge in life".

Nevertheless, he persevered in his decision and studied the paintings of Mu Xi and Shi Luo of Song Dynasty and Lu Ji of Ming Dynasty. Art and life coincided with remarkable alacrity for him: in Swatow (Shantou), he was so taken with a print of Mu Xi's gibbons that he began rearing them as pets. He studied at both the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and Xinhua Academy of Fine Arts in the late 1920s and 1930s where he studied both traditional ink and Western painting. At Xinhua, he met fellow students Chen Chong Swee and Liu Kang who were to be his compatriots in Singapore later.

Wen Hsi moved to Singapore in 1947. Till then he worked primarily in ink often with muted tones and simple lines which conveyed intense feeling and descriptive power. Led by the Chinese literati's aesthetic which regarded subjective expression as the highest form of expression, he also looked to Western art forms like Realism, Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Fauvism and Cubism to expand his repertoire and sensibility. In particular, he regarded Post Impressionism highly as the movement's focus on brushwork imbued the art with a formal quality.

A natural progression towards Abstraction ensued, where his formal training in Chinese ink could find full expression through the 'window' of Western Art. In this he was less engaged with the discussion in the Nanyang School and more comfortable with Modernist movement. The painting, In The Museum (1956) depicts the innovative vision of Chen, in his attempts to synthesise two traditions. The painting represents multiple viewpoints in the Cubist idiom, where he is concerned not only with capturing details of the exhibit but also the ambience of the gallery and the experience that engrossed the exhibit's viewers. He was also adept at synthesizing expressive brushwork with calligraphy and painted his beloved animals and birds in a bold innovative way.

His works are in many private, public and corporate collections, both here and abroad. In 1964, he was awarded the Public Service Star by the government of Singapore for his contribution to art. In 1975, he was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by the then University of Singapore for his outstanding contributions and achievements to art in Singapore. Chen Wen Hsi passed away in 1991.

Strange thing, a wall and wall ONLY at Geylang area... :runaway:

Maybe they were demolishing something and then got too lazy to finish off properly... OR... a more likely theory would be that that wall happens to be the one Humpty Dumpty fell off in those rhymes of olde...

Maybe they just built a wall for fun? :)

I doubt so. Back in the dark ages, when this wall was most likely constructed(carbon dating required to confirm this), most people's idea of fun involved whips, hooks and heavy ammunition of some sort applied to human flesh. Rather disconcerting.

No, it's a private development. The center is hollow, like in a "C" letter and the access corridors revolve around the central diameter, so there's not "unit in the center", so to speak :-)
