View Full Version : Anyone upset about the landing fees at Pearson International?
Toronto Fanboy November 25th, 2004, 12:13 AM rediculous if you ask me, 2nd highest landing fees in the world yet not the 2nd busiest airport in the world, FAR from it obviously. We're behind tokyo which is truly a world class city but even then landing fees that high are hard to justify. The blame is put on the GTAA for their far too ambitious plans to remake pearson into a "taj mahal" when it could've been done for much cheaper. Reading all the bad stuff going on in toronto is depressing. The waterfront, film industry, dirty city, this airport issue, TTC woes, etc...
How are we supposed to get more tourists when the ticket prices have to be jacked up.

go to any city and you'll here the same crap...people tend to focus on the negative more than the postive.
Brian In Lon. Ont. November 25th, 2004, 01:30 AM I'd never fault an infrastructure project as important to the economic development of Toronto and beyond as being too ambitious or excessive.
Mr Man November 25th, 2004, 12:46 PM I personally never use Pearson. I can fly into Buffalo for under $120 vs $600 at Pearson. The cheapest I ever got to Buffalo was AirTran $98 + tax.
schmidt November 25th, 2004, 04:08 PM Jacksonville - Buffalo for only 120 dollars?!
Flying in the States is definetly CHEAP!
Mr Man November 25th, 2004, 04:26 PM http://www.airtran.com/
It depends on the airline - here is the one I adore!
VAN-TO November 26th, 2004, 12:32 AM ^ Does seem ridiculous, for there's already NAVcan & security charges. I flew to Fort Lauderdale from Buffalo at 129 + tax.
bizorky November 26th, 2004, 07:13 AM With respect to Pearson, I believe the feds are looking to drop the rents charged to the GTAA. I think the government collects about $135 million from the airport authority. Lowering that will go to (or should go) lowering the landing fees.

Has airport landing fees ever stopped you from travelling somewhere?
I highly doubt anyone planning a trip to Toronto (or anywhere else for that matter) would cancel their trip after finding out about the landing fees. Air travel is a luxury. There are other alternatives if people don't like the costs.

Round trip?!
Oh man, over here flying is so expensive! A 2 hour flight from Florianopolis to Buenos Aires costs 300 dollars (round trip)!!!
And our currency is 2 times less worth, in other words it's at least 4 times more expensive!
bizorky November 26th, 2004, 09:15 PM On Air Canuck, the direct flight to London is cheaper from Pearson than from Ottawa. Ottawa has nowhere near the fees as Pearson.
Mike in TO November 26th, 2004, 10:15 PM Air travel is a luxury. There are other alternatives if people don't like the costs.
I don't think I'd call it a luxury. It is a very important part of conducting a business. The high fees cost consumers and businesses making Toronto a less attractive business or tourist destination.
schmidt November 26th, 2004, 11:17 PM Hmmm yes, then I should go to Toronto by bus! See you next month
urban 2.0 November 30th, 2004, 03:04 PM I'm kinda sick about everyone slagging Pearson for being so expensive - lets not forget one little detail here - IT'S BRAND NEW! - That's very important - obviously some run down old airport is going to be cheaper.
But lets not forget that there are lots of 20 to 30 year old airports in need of some serious re-investments. When those airports upgrade - so too will the landing costs.
Toronto only stands out because it's the first in line. I expect as renewall sweeps the world Toronto will become a bargin.
They also have to take the money while it's there - people are willing to pay more for new than pay more in 15 years for old.
Toronto could do the opposite and not re-invest at all - that's the slow path to death for a city.
In a N. American comparison - lets not forget that Toronto has a new, modern air traffic control centre, de-icing and freight systems in place - which results in more expiediant turn- arounds. And if I'm not correct the American air traffic control system is almost 20 years out of date. So they too will eventually have to upgrade.
Mr Man November 30th, 2004, 04:05 PM It may be brand new but am I going to spend an additional $600 to land there? Hell no. If anything the Pearson charges are great news for the Buffalo economy.
hkskyline November 30th, 2004, 06:40 PM Actually, Osaka Kansai, Hong Kong International, Seoul Incheon, and Kuala Lumpur International are all brand new airports built from scratch. They were much larger projects that costed a lot more money, yet they are able to control their costs and landing fees are lower. A new airport / terminal costs a lot of money, but is it reasonable?
turboskyline November 30th, 2004, 07:50 PM 2 simple words.....WestJet Hamilton!
If ya really want to avoid those excessive airport fees just look at connecting flights from smaller airports like hamilton, london and even kw heheh
Steeltown November 30th, 2004, 09:22 PM Starting today WestJet at Hamilton International will be expanding fights to Phoenix, Dec 20th to Los Angeles, Jan 7 to Palm Springs and yesterday YHM to San Francisco. All these fights are connecting fights.
Plus there's also CanJet which offers CHEAP fights from YHM to Florida. YHM to Orlando is $99. It's kinda nice because at YHM you get a free Mickey Mouse hat from Disney lol, but I dunno if they still do that now.

... fair enough... but how much money did their Federal Governments pay for these airports?
The fact of the matter is in Toronto the people are paying for the true cost and aren't flying out of some subsidized airport.
You can't tell me that building an island for an airport isn't just a wee bit more expensive than building a terminal building!
