View Full Version : IMAX in Malaysia
szehoong November 25th, 2004, 06:35 AM First Imax cinema in Malaysia to open on Dec 3
KUALA LUMPUR: Going to the cinema will take on a whole new meaning for Malaysians come Dec 3 when the country's first Imax cinema opens its doors to the public.
To be known as the DiGi Imax Theatre and located on the 10th floor of Berjaya Times Square, the new cinema will be screening the latest Hollywood digital animation feature, Polar Express.
But unlike in conventional cinemas, an Imax movie is projected onto a screen that is five-storeys high. In the case of Polar Express, it will also be shown in 3D.
“We are proud to launch the first ever Imax movie in Malaysia using the 3D format, which is the latest technology where Imax films are concerned,” said Berjaya Group Berhad chief marketing officer Mary Goh yesterday.
Besides Polar Express, audiences will also be able to watch the edutainment show Mysteries of Egypt in the new cinema.
The pricing of tickets has not been finalised, but Goh estimated that they would cost between RM12 and RM20 each.
With a seating capacity of 555, the DiGi Imax Theatre is one of the biggest Imax cinemas in South-East Asia.

By RIZAL JOHAN
For most Malaysians, the opportunity to watch an IMAX movie has only existed when one travels overseas or to neighbouring countries such as Singapore. That is all about to change come Dec 3 when the first IMAX theatre, DiGi IMAX, begins operation at the 10th floor of Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur.
IMAX, which stands for image maximum, allows you to view movies projected on to a much larger screen than conventional cinemas. In the case of the DiGi IMAX theatre, the screen size measures a whooping 29m x 21m (W x H). To give a clearer picture of the size, the screen is about five-storeys high.
Audiences will also be able to enjoy watching movies in 3D, as the DiGi IMAX theatre is equipped with the IMAX 3D screen and projector. In conjunction with the launch of the IMAX cinema next month, it will be screening the Hollywood digital animation feature, Polar Express in 3D.
“The DiGi IMAX cinema is one of the most modern in the world,” said Suzanne Soo, senior marketing manager for the IMAX theatre in a recent interview. “We have invested in the latest IMAX technology equipment and are continuing to upgrade the systems.” She estimated that the building and equipment costs at this stage is about RM30mil.
“We are continuously upgrading the system so the cost is still rising.”
With the installation of the latest IMAX technology for projection and screening, Soo explained about three categories of films, which can be screened at the cinema.
“There are basically three kinds of movies: a 2D IMAX film which has a running time of 45 minutes to an hour, a 3D IMAX film with the same running time and an IMAX DMR (Digital Re-Mastering) film which re-masters 35mm films into the IMAX film format.”
Besides screening Polar Express, the cinema will also be screening the documentary, Mysteries of Egypt. Soo added that the programming of IMAX movies differ compared to conventional theatres.
“A single movie can run from three to six months or even to a year depending on public demand,” she said.
Because of the uniqueness of IMAX movies, the majority of films are made specifically for IMAX theatres and thus, the catalogue for such films belong at the IMAX library. Soo said that they have acquired some films from the library but noted that with the DMR technology, there will be more Hollywood blockbusters to look out for.
Hollywood films that have been transferred to IMAX include The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban and Spider-Man 2.
The DiGi IMAX cinema hall can take in 555 people at a time and has a sound system comprising 44 custom designed speakers that is able to extract 12,000 watts of digital surround sound.
Having had the opportunity to tour the IMAX cinema facility, this writer was brought into the projection room to see the IMAX projector and sound system facility. According to the chief projectionist, Ramindran Kamalanathan, there is only a slight difference in operating the 35mm film and the IMAX 70mm film.
“The only difference with IMAX is that you have to sync the sound manually. For 35mm film, the sound is recorded onto the reel itself but that's not the case for IMAX. Only the image is printed onto the reel and we have to sync the sound manually,” said Ravindran who has a crew of three to help him man the projector.
Even loading the film onto the projector is no easy task as a single roll of film that has a running time of 45 minutes weighs up to 200kg. In the case of Polar Express, a feature-length film that runs almost two hours, the reel weighs over 300kg.
Mary Goh, chief marketing officer for Berjaya Group Berhad, who was also present at the interview, said that the IMAX hall is also the perfect opportunity for class trips.
“As a lot of the IMAX films are documentaries and edutainment, it is a good venue to bring students for class trips as they can experience watching an IMAX movie and learn something at the same time,” she said.
At the moment, the price of tickets has not been finalised but it will be between RM12 and RM20.
Until then, Malaysians will have to wait until Dec 3 when the IMAX cinema opens to fully appreciate the wonders of the IMAX cinema.

ethan December 6th, 2004, 08:43 AM From the Star 2nd December. So, anyone has gone to IMAX this weekend?
MELODY L. GOH hops on board The Polar Express...and it seems almost real at the new Digi-IMAX cinema in Kuala Lumpur.
TODAY, the cinema with the world’s third biggest IMAX screen will be open to the public right here in the middle of our capital city.
Located on the 10th floor of the Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur, the Digi-IMAX cinema opens with a CGI-animated feature called The Polar Express. The film features the vocal talents of Tom Hanks, Daryl Sabara, Nona Gaye, Peter Scolari, Eddie Deezen and Michael Jeter.
Earlier this week, members of the media were invited to a preview of The Polar Express at the IMAX cinema. Before entering the hall, each patron was given a pair of polarised glasses, which are designed for use during the movie. These glasses have to be returned, so if you were to watch a movie at the cinema please remember to give them back to the ushers as you walk out of the hall.
Prior to the movie, a short announcement was given on the cinema’s uniqueness. The announcement also informed the audiences not to wear their special glasses before the movie starts. No particular reason was given, but it is common knowledge that wearing the glasses “for fun” could give you a headache.
When you look at the huge screen (the biggest in South-East Asia at 21m high and 29m wide), it is hard for you to imagine watching a movie on it. You might think that some images would probably escape your view. However, once the movie starts and you have your glasses on, rest assured that you will be able to see everything. The film and the glasses were specially designed to make you see everything in 3D, and no matter where you sit in the cinema hall, the images that you see are the same size.
The opening scene of The Polar Express saw snowflakes falling on the screen, except that it didn’t look like they fell on screen, but more like on the head of the person sitting in front of you. Be prepared to see a few arms around you flailing about trying to catch a snowflake or two.
Based on a highly popular children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg of the same name, the film tells of a young boy who is starting to think that Santa Claus might not be real after all. It is Christmas Eve, and the boy is about to fall asleep when a train bound for the North Pole stops right in front of his house. A conductor stands guard outside of a caboose and calls for everyone to board the train. Not sure whether he’s dreaming or awake, the boy jumps onboard and goes on a ride that he will remember for the rest of his life.
Watching the movie on the 3D IMAX screen is a plus because the effects were superb. The colours are brighter and you see the images clearly, even if the images were computer generated. The conductor, the hobo, the father and Santa Claus, all voiced and “modelled” by Tom Hanks, looked as real as, well, the actor himself. (The movie was made using a technology called “performance capture”, in which performers act out all the scenes that are later transformed in CGI format.)
In one scene, it seemed as if the train was coming out of the screen and headed straight towards you. It’s not surprising if you even tilt your head back a little to avoid getting “hit” by the train! The train also goes up and down a few hills, which you will be able to experience when you watch it. If you don’t have a strong stomach, you might even get a little nauseous after the scene.
In another sequence, a few kids walk across a metal beam that’s located very high up. How high, you ask? Well, let’s just say that it’s so high you can’t even see what’s down below. During this scene, audiences got a little anxious because it looked as if the children were about to slip and fall.
The audio in the IMAX cinema is also great. The hall is equipped with a six-channel digital surround system (DSS), which means that everyone in the hall hears the same thing at the same time. In The Polar Express, there’s a scene or two that involves the ringing of a bell and with DSS, that sound really is as magical as it was described in the script.
The Polar Express is a great movie to open the Digi-IMAX cinema with. Not only because of the heightened experience of watching the movie’s audio and visual effects come to life, but also because the movie’s storyline itself is perfect for the Christmas season. If you have a choice between watching the movie on conventional theatre and the IMAX theatre, go for the latter. At only RM20 per ticket (which is only about RM8 more than what a normal ticket would cost on a weekend), it really is worth your time and money. Go ahead and take a ride with The Polar Express on IMAX.
szehoong December 6th, 2004, 12:36 PM From the Star 2nd December. So, anyone has gone to IMAX this weekend?
Yea.....I watched it last Thursday which is the DiGi Premiere day ;)
It was fantastic! :okay: I am just a bit dissapointed with the 3D glasses thats all......cos the ones I wore at Auckland's IMAX and Vancouver Famous Player's IMAX is so much better :(

hahaha.....first....not all movies are destined for IMAX.
Secondly......a lot of people think that IMAX is all about 3D.....I can assure you that is not true cos there are more 2D IMAX movies than 3D ones.
ANyway for DiGi users......there would be a RM3 off the RM20 ticket price for weekdays and a RM2 off for weekends. ;) So it is RM17 for weekdays and RM18 for weekends :D

Christmas movie with huge effect
http://www.thestar.com.my/hp/spotlight/2004/12/spot0712.jpg
By ESTHER CHANDRAN
Being in the audience of a DiGi IMAX theatre can be an intimidating experience as people are dwarfed by the 21m-high by 29m-wide screen.
“I can almost touch the snow” were some of the excited comments heard as ‘The Polar Express’ welcomed moviegoers to the 555-seat DiGi IMAX Theatre at Berjaya Times Square on Dec 1.
Sure enough, it seemed like snowflakes were within reach as the movie transported viewers into the heart of the North Pole on an exhilarating train ride.

The information counter at the Digi IMAX Theatre at Berjaya Times Square.
Of course, minus the 3D glasses, the screen is bleary with a double vision effect but put on those special glasses and a viewer will feel like he is actually stepping into the movie.
The movie based on the Caldecott award winning children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg concerns a young boy, who defies sleep, hoping to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus riding on his sleigh only to hear a loud sound outside his house.
Through his bedroom window, the young boy sees a shiny black train and in haste, runs out of the house to check if the train was for real.
The train conductor played by Tom Hanks invites the child on board and when asked for its destination, he answers, “Why, to the North Pole, of course. This is the Polar Express”.
At first the child hesitates but he later jumps on board to join a coach full of pyjama-clad children, wide and alert to see Santa.
There’s a lot of excitement in the train journey itself and there’s more adventure for the three children in Santa’s high-tech factory where gifts are selected and labelled for children around the world.
Most movies for children have a lesson to impart and this one is no exception, as it stresses on the possibilities in life for those who believe.
Certain parts bring on a realisation of how 3D-cinema technology has given moviegoers a close encounter with the adventures on screen especially when the locomotive comes to a screeching halt right before your eyes.
This Christmas movie directed by Robert Zemeckis is the first Hollywood feature of its kind to be converted from the conventional 35mm format into IMAX® 3D.

IMAX staff distributing 3D glasses to ticket holders as they entre the theatre.
Images are projected onto the huge IMAX screen using two polarised IMAX projector lenses, aligned with the lenses of special 3D glasses, which are distributed to ticket holders.
Unlike the cineplex we are so accustomed to, the IMAX theatre is like its name suggests, a hall with tiered seating that walking from one end to the other can leave some panting.
Once seated, the enormity of its screen, which is 21m high, and 29m wide is quite intimidating.
The DiGi IMAX Theatre is powered by a specially-designed digital sound system that delivers 12,000 watts of uncompressed digital surround sound.
Ticket prices for IMAX 3D films are priced at RM20 for adults and RM12 for children (three to 12 years old) and senior citizens.
For 2D IMAX films, tickets are priced at RM12 for adults and RM8 for children and senior citizens.
The length of IMAX films range from 40 minutes for a documentary-style film to 90 minutes for a Hollywood feature that has been digitally re-mastered into IMAX format.
The IMAX theatre opened to the public on Dec 3.

Forty-five hundred times larger than an average TV screen, IMAX and IMAX 3D giant flat screens soar up to eight stories high and have a slight curvature that extends beyond the field of geometric recognition. Because these screens fill your peripheral vision, you feel like you’re right in the action. IMAX 3D screens are painted silver to maximize the amount of light reflected back to the audience.

http://www.imax.com/ImaxWeb/images/imaxTechnoFormatPic.jpg
IMAX uses 15-perforation, 70mm film to create images of incredible sharpness. The 15/70 frame is 10 times larger than the 35mm used in regular theatres and three times larger than standard 70mm film that is now rarely used. This makes it the largest commercial film ever invented. Would you believe, IMAX large format film is so strong it could be used to tow your car?

^^^ Electronic Glasses.....it is big because it houses two Lithium batteries which powers a liquid crystal shutter which shutters your view alternatively between right and left eyes at 96Hz (96 times per second). It also has a wireless receiver to receive signals from the IMAX projector to when to activate the goggles ;)
BTW I really like how spacious the legroom and the seats are ( which follows the exact dimensions of all IMAX theatres worldwide :okay ). This is unlike TGV and GSC which gives Malaysians ultra-cramp seats ala AirAsia :D

The Polar Express
Take the journey in IMAX 3D DMR!
The Polar Express: AN IMAX ® 3D EXPERIENCE is the first full-length feature ever converted into IMAX ® 3D. Mysteries of Egypt in IMAX 2D
“Mysteries of Egypt” transports audiences to a distant time and place where the Nile River Valley cuts an emerald swath through the desert sands. In the flood-fed richness of this land rose an ancient kingdom whose culture has strongly influenced the western world. Its massive architecture and the intrigue of such personages as Nefertiti and Tutankhamen capture the imagination. Around the old capital of Memphis, near modern Giza, rulers such as Ramses II built massive funerary pyramids to house them in their afterlife. With its dedicated team of scientists, “Mysteries of Egypt” explores the magnificent architectural feats, awe-inspiring legends, and amazing history of the ancient Egyptian civilization. Float down the lush Nile and soar over the Valley of the Kings, as stars Omar Sharif and Kate Maberly (“The Secret Garden”) explore the latest discoveries and uncover many of the mysteries that surround these ancient peoples.
