SBA tower is not U/C it's on hold ;)
Also I'm expecting to see something taller U/C than this bunch of various 12-16 floorers. Anyway this shows that RE market in Vilnius remains very active with lotsa new constructions ongoing and even more planned :okay:

It's even quite hard to count them all. I think there are also some high-rises U/C about which we don't know yet. Three "commieblock" 12 floorers:
http://www.mabilta.lt/ukmerges/img/d_namas.jpg
Akropolis office building 16 floors (on hold - maybe it will not have 16 floors because of opposition by city architects). Anyway there should be more than 20 high-rises U/C in Vilnius today.

This is a graph showing number of new apartments built in Baltic capital cities, this might explain why there are so many new "commieblocks" in Vilnius. One of the problems is that there are not many landplots prepared for construction (documentation, various plans etc.) so some companies just built tall buildings. And that's a good thing because I wouldn't like to see many new 3-4 storey "commieblocks" widespread all around the city :ohno:

Yeah, I thought it is, but the things are moving ;)
The fact is that 2 years ago there were 4 high-rises projects with 2 built, few months back there were already 12, now it became something bigger + few projects are waiting. Nice to see we're getting taller :)
Also there are some signs of Vyrokas residential to be made higher (see the Vilnius projects thread last posts)

@Mantaz: If you didn't count those three 12 floorers then even without that 16 floorer and sba tower it's still ~20 U/C. ;)

@Edd maybe we could take them as 1, then everyhting would be almost correct :D

Commieblock, commieblocks.......
C'mon, all new residential towers can't be glassy, it would be way too expensive. So they have to use concrete...
Or maybe I just don't like the word commieblock. :D
In examble, this one looks very nice IMO http://img.miestai.net/zirm.jpg

Don't you think that it depends from the population too.
Im very annoyed about this graph. There should be something like:
apartment per person.

Sorry to repeat once more - Riga has loads of reconstruction in historical residential houses on-going. There is much more to reconstruct as in Tallinn or Vilnius. New construction in Riga is not the main item yet... but it is becoming.
- - -
We have only 9 buildings with 12 floors or more u/c
But there are 22 approved and 21 proposed highrises according to my data. Among them - 20 buildings with 20 floors and more. I am sure that in short time this list will increase.

yes, and riga has better clouds...
no we all know that Riga is the sleeping(but awakening) giant of baltic capitals... and it will overtake us soon...but dunno, the quantaty isnt that important imo, but where they situate, what they look like so on...if they are all scattered, like in Moscow it doesnt give effect.

I'm not very sure is there is "much more" to reconstruct in Riga than in Vilnius (not sure about Tallinn because there are not really many old buildings outside the old town). Vilnius was really lagging with reconstruction of old buildings what is a shame (not only the ones in the old town but in entire "New Town" disctrict where are quite many late 19th - early 20th century buildings, I'd say about 70% of them still are in bad shape and were not repaired for decades, if ever were. This is the case even in the most central parts of the town). While in Riga reconstructions were ongoing on a high pace for years and most of buildings were repaired.

We have no doubt that Rīga will boom soon :okay:
But for now Vilnius still kicks its ass :D

Should visit Vilnius once more for investigating the suburbs. Up to now I have impression that there is Old town, Uzupis and some rather scattered and few historical buildings outside them.
Or... may be somebody can make a thread about less known (unknown to me) historical districts of Vilnius? ;)
- - -
Btw. do not think that I have shown mush historical districts of Riga so far. There is Vidzeme suburb, Jugla, Jaunciems, Ziemeblazma, Sarkandaugava, Mezaparks, Ciekurkalns, Teika, Bolderaja, Tornakalns, Sampeteris, Agenskalns, Kipsala, Voleri, Ilguciems, Katlakalns, Kundzinsala, Vecaki and some more 18th - early 20th century districts waiting on the list.
- - -
Regarding the u/c highrises in Vilnius - Helios is very very good. SBA will be something. Then a bit less intriguing - Vilnius Gate and Victoria tower, BCC2. These are neutral to my mind - not bad and not that interesting either. Lets see what trick will make Vyrokas... but design of the existing part is not fine in any case to my mind - even without these green shields (are these removed?). Others are commieblocks just for statistics, sorry.
I am not in high opinion about most of the upcoming commieblocks in Riga either.
- - -
And, btw. Estonians should not wonder about the new commieblocks in LT and LV ;) Whole world, including Western Europe builds them currently.

Looked once more the ones in Vilnius. That apartment building with the animated GIF pictures looks promising as well (Kalvariju-Didlaukio or similar). Would not be sad at all if that one would be built in Riga.

We actually show only modern areas and some other places like Gediminas avenue. Maybe because we mostly discuss about skyscrapers here, another point, that winter isn't a good time to take pictures, thus maybe we can promise to reveal something in spring

That's very true, those commieblocks aren't really significant :ohno:

Yeah, I bet there are commieblocks constructed in Tallinn, aren't there? ;)

Ofcourse it would be a good idea to visit Vilnius ;), but there is no need for it. Check out this web page: http://www.paveldas.vilnius.lt/seniunijos_en.php There is a list of buildings in Vilnius with photos. Photos are quite old and many things look different today but that website still is quite good (it would be hard to keep it up to date ofcourse).

this is well said, in fact I agree with you :D
There is so much empty/unused/neglected land inside the city so those commieblocks is kinda a good way to fill it and make it look at least like a city, not like a forest with some occasional building here and there (sometimes you might get an impression like this, seriously).
About "historic" buildings, of course Vilnius is nothing compared to Riga in this sense but there are quite some nice (or potentially nice?) streets with many late 19th - early 20th century buildings, most are unrestored and looks shabby (that's Naujamiestis or "New town" district). I'm not sure how many such buildings might be there but there are quite alot
These are in Naujamiestis district (it's in fact the periphery of central part of Vilnius), it was really forgotten and neglected for a long ime, only now first serious investments occur

http://img119.exs.cx/img119/499/IMG_6256.jpg
as you might see, most look shabby and neglected, and these are not the worst ones (in fact they're among the better ones), here is a big photo thread about "old buildings" outside the old town in Vilnius, you might get a better idea how they look like http://tinkle.miestai.net/viewtopic.php?t=654

Oh-la-la, John, that is beautiful thread! It brings something new for me! Many buildings there are restored
Edd- I have been looking that Webpage you proposed before. It takes lots of time and you never know what kind of building would come up. But the result many times is revarding!
Riga made such inventory in late 1980ies - but they never published it :( Now I am making my own inventory ;)

Those Vilnius streets you show above are loaded with beautiful buildings indeed, John! :okay:
It's almost a shame that currently so much attention and funding goes into restoring the glamor parts of Vilnius, the Old Town and Gediminas Prospektas areas. Yet I am sure the day will come where these apartment buildings, too, will get the love and care they deserve! :angel1:
P.S. Welcome, keen! :cheers1: Another forumer from Vilnius ... I visited your beautiful city last summer.

@Gatis: Yes, it's bad that the search function in that page with the list of buildings is useless. Good luck with your list :) - it's a huge work for one person.
