Saladin Province (Arabic: صلاح الدين Salāh ad Dīn‎) (or Salah ad Din Governorate) is a province in Iraq, north of Baghdad. The governorate has an area of 24,363 square kilometres (9,407 sq mi). The estimated population for 2003 was 1,042,200 people. The capital is Tikrit; the governorate also contains the significantly larger city of Samarra. Before 1976 the governorate was part of Baghdad Governorate.
The province is named after Saladin (written Salah ad-Din in modern Arabic Latin transcription), a Kurdish Muslim leader who defeated the Crusaders at Hattin, who hailed from the province. Salah ad Din was the home province of Saddam Hussein; he was born in Al-Awja, a town near Tikrit.

Can I ask where you found those pictures Sinjar? I use flickr, panoramio and mapcarta. We have discussed this many times but I really wish that someone would make new and beautiful pictures of all Iraqi provinces. All we see is war, killings, terrorism, poverty etc. You can get a depression by just looking.

I would make it obligatory for all Iraqis to get to know the extremely diversity and beauty of Iraq. It would also serve as something positive in a very harsh life. Many Iraqis are very ignorant about the beauty of Iraq. Some more than others of course.

It would also increase the pride.

In 836 the Abbasid Caliph al-Mu'tasim moved the capital from Baghdad to Samarra. He commissioned builders and craftsmen from throughout the empire to build his new city. On the shores of the Tigris River, he constructed his palace, the Jawsaq al-Khaqani. It integrates elaborate gardens, baths, residential suites, courtyards, and audience halls into a sizeable walled complex.

Al Askari Mosque or the Askariyya Mosque/Shrine is a Shiah Muslim holy site located in the Iraqi city of Samarra 125 km (78 mi) from Baghdad. It is one of the most important Shi'ah mosques in the world, built in 944.Its dome was destroyed in a bombing by Sunni extremists in February 2006 and its two remaining minarets were destroyed in another bombing in June 2007, causing widespread anger amongst Shi'ah Muslims. The remaining clock tower was also destroyed in July 2007.
