Terminal 2 Gets S$240 Million Facelift To Boost Changi's Aviation Hub Status
© Singapore Changi Airport (http://www.changiairport.com.sg)
Changi Airport's Terminal 2 (T2) will look brand new when its upgrading is completed in 2005. T2, which is 13 years old, will see more capacity added to the departure / transit lounge, enhancing Changi's position as an aviation hub. The upgrading, which will see massive improvements made to its design, costs S$240 million.
Mr Yeo Cheow Tong, Minister for Transport visited the airport on 30 October 2003 to view the upgrading at the airport. He applauded the efforts taken by CAAS to ensure that airport operations were not affected and inconvenience to airport users kept to a minimum despite the extensive renovation work.
The upgraded T2 will have a new glass façade allowing natural light into the departure hall. A new canopy above the kerbside at the departure hall will be extended outwards to ensure that airport users are shielded from the rain when alighting from their vehicles. An extra 2,800 square metres will also be added to the transit area for shops, restaurants, seating amenities and landscaping, with improved facilities for the elderly or disabled travellers.

In my opinion Changi is an overrated airport, nothing really special about its layout or design.

Only good thing is the amount of services that they provide to travellers. (Last been there in 95 when they were just building the finger piers on T2)

Well, the clear, simple fact is that Changi has NEVER earned its reputation from layout or design. It has always excelled in what matters directly to its users: services! :)

Btw ignore, you go and create a new thread?

Yeah. RafflesCity PMed me to bring over to a new thread whatever is relevant. The old thread as requested by Jan will either be deleted or archived.

I have 7 pages of the old thread to browse through to move over some relevant info to the new thread now. You will probably notice that the pictures below are ALL relevant. All are related to anything new at Changi.

Think its just a coincidence. For the supreme court i guess they were going for the gold brownish all important look, same with the esplanade.

For the airport its basically for the all natural wood look, cause you wouldn't want the interiors to be all glass and meta;, hard and cold looking.

I wonder if Terminal 1 changed the facade of the part facing the runways.

There seems to be green glass, last time there wasnt.

I also noticed that they improved the aircraft gangways and made the walls glass

Plaza Premium Lounge is the first public access transit lounge open to all classes of travelers regardless of airlines, class of travel and airline membership in Singapore Changi Airport. The Lounge has recently relocated to larger, more conducive premises at the third level of the Departure / Transit Lounge in Terminal 2 with a floor area of approximately 7,000 square feet and a seating capacity for 100 people at any one time. Open 24 hours daily, the shower, massage, fitness lifestyle centre continues to be a very welcomed and much needed facility for all inbound transit or long haul passengers of airlines that operate from Terminal 2, Singapore Changi Airport.
After many long hours’ travel with movement constraint on board of a plane, nothing is more inviting than to come in to a clean, tranquil, cozy and spacious environment portraying a health conscious lifestyle concept. The Lounge underwent a refreshing facelift, which is reflected in the Straits Chinese and Zen combination concept which emphasizes efficient space usage to create an extremely soothing environment to alleviate tiredness and stress after a long flight.

Enveloped by an immediate feeling of contemporary elegance amidst the rusticity of natural elements such as wood, water, pebbles and an abundance of greenery, warm natural tones predominate the colour scheme of the interior décor and furnishings, bordering to richer, earthier tones. Strong emphasis is placed on the use of natural materials like woven cane, wood carvings, clear glass, stone ware, earthen ware and raw silk wall décor fabric in the presence of subtle warm lighting and natural light pouring through the floor to ceiling glass paneling which overlooks the adjacent outdoor sunflower garden. A gentle and relaxing music of the sounds of nature, forest and water permeates the tranquil atmosphere.

At the entrance of the lounge, one is immediately attracted to the row of high tech, latest full line of ergonomic exercise machines with workout options designed to fulfill your physical workout needs. One of the largest airport gyms in the world, this fitness facility comprises a hydraulic rower, treadmills, cross trainers, upright bike, strength and weight stations. The stretch yoga area comes equipped with mats and cushions, and fit balls are available for balance and stretching. The wall mounted plasma television displays a succession of yoga and fitness aerobics videos for the health conscious. A bank of mirrors on the inner wall leads to a changing room with a dedicated coat and luggage area. A session at the gym coupled with yoga before or after completes the entire body workout, to be followed subsequently by a hot pampering shower.

The shower facilities features twelve individual shower rooms with an attached dressing and dry area each. The shower rooms can be used by both male and female without gender segregation, which will eliminate waiting time and improve utilization. A luxuriously appointed common male and female dressing area comes equipped with wash basins and hair dryers.

Another highlight of the new Lounge is the foot reflexology pebble path leading to the massage and napping area, where simplicity makes a great design statement. Known to and practiced by the ancient Chinese, foot reflexology is a natural health approach where reflex zones or nerve endings in the feet are massaged or stimulated to normalize the function of the body’s internal organs.

From the foot reflexology path, we enter the massage area where six treatment rooms are available for head and shoulder massage and foot reflexology. The nail care facility which features normal and French manicure makes its debut as one of the new services of this Lounge.

Adjacent to the massage area is a private napping area with a dim, soothing interior where each napping suite comes with checkered wooden partitions installed for privacy and aesthetic appeal. Raised wooden platforms with tatami mats spell the comfort of a peaceful sanctuary, amidst the gentle permeating aroma of essential oils; creating a restful and calm atmosphere for complete relaxation. Vibrant and colourful Straits Chinese décor chests and trinket boxes lend a feeling of timeless charm and serenity.

As one enters the Lounge area, a water feature wall takes centre stage as the soothing sound of water skimming across slate and pebbles enhance the serenity and refined elegance of the entire design concept.

The self service buffet bar is amply stocked with wholesome salad and condiments, freshly prepared finger sandwiches, pastries, cookies and seasonal local and imported fruits. Hot and cold beverages are readily available beside the bar and buffet counters.

The library houses international newspapers and magazines, with Straits Chinese china and porcelain ware adorning the shelves. Internet and email access, as well as laptop computers points are available for travelers to keep in touch with family and friends during transit. Another new offering in this Lounge is the Office Services facility which provides facsimile, photocopy, courier, local and international calls services for busy business executives to catch up on work during transit.

The much touted Oxygen Therapy is made available at the bar counter where one can enjoy a whiff of pure oxygen while having a bite to eat or a refreshing drink in hand. Mobile oxygen is also available throughout the lounge area, so opt for some rejuvenating fresh air anywhere you may be in the lounge. The private Oxygen Aromatherapy room is another new service offering where you can enjoy total repose in a comfortable armchair with an elevated leg rest to enhance blood circulation, reduce fatigue and improved concentration while breathing in pure oxygen infused with lavender essential oils.

Overall, the aesthetically pleasing surroundings with soft, indirect lighting and soothing background music enhances the ambiance, smooth lines and contrasting ergonomic steel ceiling – giving one an open, spacious feel. Since the one-stop shower, massage, fitness lifestyle lounge began operations in early 2002, there has been a marked increase in patronage, especially amongst economy class travelers. Uniquely designed to provide the tranquility that will help you refresh yourself, or simply relax and unwind, the lounge not only caters to individual travelers; it is also ideal for groups up to 120 persons on transit.

Having obtained the ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2003, the Straits Chinese and Zen-themed integrated lounge facilities and services will be another worldwide and industry first, where transit time spent in Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 2 transcends privilege and pleasure

Inter-Roller clinches S$83m worth of airport logistics projects
By Loh Kim Chin, Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE : Inter-Roller has secured baggage handling system contracts valued at S$83 million.

These projects are for airports in China, the United Kingdom and the ASEAN region, including Singapore.

They are expected to be completed in stages over three years to 2008.

Inter-Roller was awarded two more projects by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore to provide operation and maintenance services as well as for upgrading the baggage handling system at Changi Airport Terminal 1.

It has so far secured a total of S$212 million worth of projects this year.

The projects are expected to contribute to its turnover and profitability in the current and subsequent financial years. - CNA /ct

Online reports from official sources say that there will be a phased opening. Terminal 1 & 2 link opens first. Then the rest will open by 2008 will T3 opens. Sounds practical, after all, no point keeping something closed for 2006 and 2007 when its already built and people, a lot of them, want to ride it...This isn't Buangkok, with low ridership...

Its from the same company and its basically the same series of trains, except that the train specifications of the Skytrain are different from those at Sengkang and punggol.

1. The trains here can be coupled in pairs. The operations at Sengkang and punggol do not allow for that.
2. Obviously design is slightly different, so is colour.

But they share the same crystal cut edges and sleek lines...and are basically part of the Crystal Mover train series.

AND EVERYONE PLEASE LISTEN!

The Changi Airport Skytrain system comprises of two systems or lines (A Northern Line & A Southern Line), and each system or line is not connected to the other. Do NOT THINK THAT THE SYSTEM RUNS IN A LOOP!!! Many people are getting this wrong.

Singapore LC Development To Build S$92M Airport Hotel
SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) said in a statement Friday that it has awarded a Changi Airport site for lease to L.C. Development Ltd. (L38.SG) to build and operate the city-state's first airport hotel.

The S$92 million hotel will be named Crowne Plaza Changi Airport Hotel, L.C. Development said in a separate statement.

The hotel is expected to be opened by mid-2008, it added.

The nine-storey building will occupy a site of about 7,700 square meters next to the upcoming Terminal 3.

The hotel will have up to 350 guest rooms and will be linked to the new Terminal 3.

L.C. Development said it has appointed the InterContinental Hotels Group to manage the airport hotel under its Crowne Plaza hotel brand.

Pretty cool...
16 cars in total.

This is pretty interesting.

My guess for allocation of Crystal People Mover train cars:

Services for Transit ONLY section (South line):
Terminal 3 Internal services - 2 cars (probably use one for operation)
Between Terminal 2 and terminal 3 - 2 cars (probably use one for operation too)

Western part of the airport for both public and transit (north line) - probably 12 train cars.

Between Terminal 1 and 2 (public) - 2 cars
Between Terminal 2 and 3 (public) - 2 cars
Between Terminal 1 and 3 (public) - 2 cars

Between Terminal 1 and 2 (transit passengers) - 2 cars
Between Terminal 2 and 3 (transit passengers) - 2 cars
Between Terminal 1 and 3 (transit passengers) - 2 cars

It is confirmed that they have plans for one more station - designed for connection to future Terminal 4.

Pity that the Budget Terminal dun include the train lines.

Changi rolls out part of new train system
It's ferrying transit travellers between 2 terminals; open to public next year

By Karamjit Kaur
Aviation Correspondent

CHANGI Airport's new $135 million People Mover System started operating last week to ferry transit passengers between Terminals 1 and 2.

The train, which travels faster than the 16-year-old existing Skytrain, opens to the public early next year. The Skytrain will then cease to operate.

By then, plasma television screens at the stations will announce when the next train is due - a feature not available on the existing system. The train's cabins will also have flight information on liquid crystal display (LCD) screens.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) started work on the new system in 2002. By the time Terminal 3 is ready in 2008, trains running on 6.5km of tracks - compared to about 1.5km now - will be zipping people between the three terminals in minutes. The entire system will have seven stations, up from just two now.

But those heading for Changi's new Budget Terminal - which opens this Sunday - will have to be content with free shuttle buses. A CAAS spokesman told The Straits Times that the People Mover System would not be including that terminal on its route to 'keep costs low' for airlines and passengers.

The Mitsubishi consortium building the system is also working on several other airport train projects in Dubai, the United States and South Korea among others, said Mr Ozaki Takahid, who manages the machinery department at Mitsubishi Corporation.

Other big airports like Kuala Lumpur International Airport and London's Heathrow also use trains to ferry people between the different terminals. Such systems are 'indispensable to any major airport', said the CAAS spokesman, as passengers may have to catch connecting flights in different terminals.

Terminal 2 is now being upgraded at the cost of $250 million, which will add restaurants and shops for both passengers and visitors, among other new facilities.

The $1.75 billion Terminal 3 is also starting to take shape. The main building's physical structure is almost completed.

A passenger on the People Mover System which debuted on Thursday in the restricted area said he looked forward to its onboard flight information features which will come onstream early next year.

Marine engineer Anthony Samarasekera, 50, who lives in Sri Lanka and was catching a flight to Brisbane in Australia, said: 'If you're moving from one terminal to another to catch a flight, you want to know when the boarding gate will close, for example.'

He had one grouse. Although the train was faster - 60kmh compared to the Skytrain's 48kmh - it was a jerkier ride as the train picked up speed to leave a station and decelerated quickly to stop.

CAAS said these glitches will be ironed out.

Retired teacher Alfred Wong, 67, is looking forward to the trains running around the clock instead of from 6am to 1.30am now. He said: 'Planes take off and land 24/7.'

The People Mover System will operate 24 hours by 2008, CAAS said.

How? the public-passenger track of old skytrain is different from new crystal train. I cannot figure how they are gonna start service for public. I only know that they already change one track from terminal 2 to terminal 1 (transit section) already in operational.

The only thing I know is that when Terminal 3 opens, the track from T2 to T1 will be closed to refitted with new track and new sets of electricity cables for new trains. This means all passengers have to got to Terminal 3 and then to Terminal 1. This would be temporary measure until track in Terminal 2 public passenger section is ready.

Posted this before but very confusing. See what you make of it.

System Configuration The overall PMS alignment is shown in Figure 2. The PMS configuration includes two sets of Automated People Movers (APM), PMS North and PMS South. The alignment for PMS North is shown in Figure 3. The PMS North has five routes serving four stations (B, C, D and E). PMS North has separate routes or vehicles providing Landside service and Airside service. Landside service is for riders who are officially in Singapore and Airside service is for airline passengers and crew who have not cleared customs and immigration and are therefore not officially in Singapore. One route (B-E) will serve both Airside and Landside riders, with car and station platformdoor controls keeping them separate. One end car of the B-E train will serve Airside passengers and the other end car will service Landside passengers. Any middle car of the B-E train will be capable of serving either Airside or Landside passengers based on demand and as selected by the Central Control Operator (CCO). 4 Figure 2. PMS Alignment 5 Figure 3. PMS North 6 The PMS North routes and normal operating mode during the peak period are summarized in Table 1 below. The peak period hours are generally 6-10 am and 5-11 pm

The PMS South has two routes A – A-South and A-F, which serve three stations (A, A-South, and F). A-A-South route serves Terminal 3 and A-F route serves Terminal 2 & 3. Both routes provide Airside service only. The normal operating mode during the peak period for both routes is Synchronized Double Shuttle. Stations will generally be center platform for the dual lane shuttles and side platform for the by-pass and single lane shuttles. Those with both Airside and Landside service will have side platforms on both sides of the guideway, one for each service. Station length will be sufficient for maximum-length trains expected for each guideway/route, but not more than 40 m. Platform barrier walls and doors will be straight, not “castellated”.

Phasing Plan
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Page 6
A phasing plan for the PMS implementation has been developed to allow D-E Airside and Landside service to be provided continuously, with only a brief shutdown of Landside service, during the construction of the PMS. This phasing plan will require construction of temporary facilities and modifications to existing facilities. The re-use plan for the existing facilities is to retain as much of the existing guideway and station structure as possible and to make the necessary modifications to accommodate the selected PMS Contractor’s technology. The demolition, construction of temporary facilities, and renovation of the existing facilities will be done by the Guideway Contractor and Adtranz and are not part of the PMS Operating System Contract. The PMS phasing plan is also coordinated with the T3 construction schedule, such that the PMS Contractor is provided access to facilities as soon as they are available. The Total System is to be operational by July 1, 2005

SINGAPORE - Want your private drive-up entrance, check-in, immigration, customs and security counters at the airport?

Throw in a five-star lounge, private rest areas, a business centre equipped with conference rooms and a gym, and relax while being driven in a limousine to your waiting aircraft.

Only if you are a CIP, or a commercially important person.

A 2,000 sq-m facility for exclusive use by CIPs travelling on commercial or private jets will open at Singapore's Changi Airport in August, the developer announced on Thursday.

JetQuay, the joint venture firm which will develop and manage the facility, said in a statement it will be the first of its kind in Asia catering to the CIP market, which includes business executives and wealthy individuals.

The members-only facility will be next to Terminal 2.

Transit passengers who want to meet local guests at the airport will have a meeting room, JetQuay said.

Only an average of 50 passengers a day are expected to use the facility as usage will be based on membership, the statement said without giving details of the cost of membership.

JetQuay is a joint venture involving France-based airport and terminal services company Worldwide Flight Services and two other firms. -- AFP
