Today I drove to the outskirts of Berlin where the gigantic "My Tropical Islands" project is taking shape. For €7 visitors are allowed to enter the place and I just could not miss the opportunity. Man, the dome is humungous!

Work was being carried out as we visited (they work 24/7 in three shifts) and one of the first things that struck me was that a substantial part of the workforce seemed to be Malaysian (the project is being financed by a Malaysian investor).

Although the countdown says that it will open in 19 days, a lot of work is still to be done and the island is far from being finished:

The island is enourmous, but it feels somehow flat as it is dwarfed by the height of the dome!:

Once finished the central part will be transparent and able to let through 97.5 of the UVA. In front of the bay an actual horizon is being built (!?) and, on top of it, a gigantic UVA lighting system will provide for those who want to suntan. You will need to wear sun protection inside! I have been told that the island will be able to recreate artificial tropical sunsets and sunrises(?).

In the centre there will be a tropical forest with over 25000 tropical plants, trees and orchids while on one side they are building Thai, Indonesian and Borneo villages. On the opposite sides are beach volley courts, asian food courts etc. The changing rooms, toilets etc are build underneath (!?) the islands.

And here is a last picture from the outside as I left:

I spoke to one of the guys at the information desk and he told me that the company has already bought the area sorrounding it as they plan to expand it in the immediate future! By 2006 the hotels will be finished and they may further enlarge the island itself.
The island is powered by its own power station, will be open 24/7 and they are already taking orders for the "tropical" New Year's Eve" party there, which costs €100.
I was well impressed with the project and can't wait to see it finished. I hope you enjoyed the pics, if you want I can post more of them (as you can imagine I got a bit carried away and took tons of pics). Just let me know.
