With a population of more than half a million, the Ampang Jaya municipality's fast paced growth could do with a new shopping centre, especially one that offers variety and caters to modern shopping trends.

The long awaited Galaxy Ampang Shopping Centre in Taman Dagang, the biggest shopping centre in the area is expected to be open by Chinese New Year, developer Shencourt Sdh Bhd said.

The RM350mil three phased project comprises a shopping centre, 2 blocks of serviced apartment and a boutique hotel on a 188.4ha site.

The mixed development project began in 1994 but completion was delayed due to economic crisis. The 1st phase (shopping centre) was completed in 2003 and the Certificate of Fitness (CF) from MPAJ is expected by the end of the year.

Phase 2 consists of 2 tower blocks with more than 500 apartment and resort style recreational facilities at each tower. A 2 storey boutique hotel with 100 rooms makes up the 3rd phase.

Shencourt managing director Datuk Richard Lee said the complex was designed with the residents' needs in mind. "Ampang status had changed over the years," Lee said in an interview at the Galaxy Ampang management office recently."Construction of phase 2 and 3 is expected to begin in June next year," he added.

The 9 storey podium block with 500 retail lots and more than 2000 car park bays (for overall development) is easily accessible from the Middle Ring Road II via Jalan Dagang 4 and Jalan Dagang Besar. The Kuala Lumpur-Ampang Elevated Highway's Ampang exit and entrance points are close to Jalan Dagang Besar, making the shopping centre accessible from the highway as well.

Motorist can also get to Galaxy Ampang via Jalan Ampang and Jalan Nirwana through Jalan Pandan Kemajuan. Public buses ply the area while the STAR-LRT Cahaya and Ampang station are just a kilometre away.

A distinct feature of the complex is the one stop international car showroom on the 3rd floor operated by TAHB Auto City, occupying 9090 sq metres."The competition among shopping centres is high so being distinct is important. The international motor showroom will be a permanent auto showroom with all types of cars and auto accessories," said executive director Hock S.Teoh.

The shopping centre adopts retail floor layout which are strategically located including observatory lifts and double storey escalators with 204m walking distance from the north to south of the building.

Teoh said every floor was like ground floor driveaway with wondow display visible from the parking level. Another unique feature is a floating stage at the main atrium, which rises from the concourse level to the 2nd floor. THe floating stage allows performances and events to take place at different levels so that the spotlight is not only at the lower floors. This give retailers on four floors access to the stage area." Teoh said.

There are 6 levels dedicated to shopping and 3 levels for parking. Retail lots are on the concourse, ground, 1st floor and 2nd floor while the auto showroom occupies the 3rd floor. The 4th floor is tagged as an entertainment and food area with an amusement centre, karaoke and snooker facilities, restaurant and a 10 screen cineplex.

Lee said the centre would be 70% occupied when it opened for business. Teoh said the company was negotiating to bring in a prominent foreign company as its anchor tenant and hoped to complete the deal soon.

Sounds great Zahirnya. Wish i lived in such a pro development country - the new Sydney City Council seems all against development unfortunately.

So is Ampang close enough to the city centre to visit? Can't find a website for the centre

Hmmm, never knew that sze...

But yeah, for ampang town itself, the galaxy mall is long overdue... At least when that mall opens, ampangites do not always have to go all the way towards ampang point, GEM, etc for their shopping... More convenient to have a big one in the neighborhood...

Pandan Safari is the worst of the worst mall I've been to. Now it only had one tenant and that is Econsave. Before that it is just the furniture shop. I am not too sure if others starts mushrooming around the mall because of Econsave but I doubt there would be many.....have to check out soon leh :D

The last time I went there is when I was very very free......I think 3 years back. There is one VCD shop there and that furniture shop and NOTHING else. Sad isn't it?

Is MBO the one that also operates cineplexes in Bangi, Amcorp, and UE3 (if that one still exists)? I saw their "Official Opening" ad in The Star Metro last thursday...

Has any1 gone there yet, since the place has opened its doors already? I have this weird feeling that the Galaxy is going to be like Summit USJ... Massive, with ordinary design and bland colors, as well as suffering from tenant (or rather the lack of it) problems...

10-screen cineplex for Ampang folk

By ESTHER CHANDRAN

IT is about time the residents in and around Ampang have a Cineplex to call their own instead of having to travel down to the city to catch the latest movies.

The MBO Cineplex at the Galaxy Ampang Shopping Centre opened its doors on May 17 and is now screening the latest shows in town like Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Madagascar, Kingdom of Heaven, House of Wax, Scenario XX, Lady Boss and Chandramukhi.

“This 10-screen Cineplex has the latest Dolby CP650 sound processor with an ultra high frequency four way loudspeaker facility which provides world-class sound system,” said Mcat Box Office Sdn Bhd managing director Toh Kim Hock.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/6/m_p24hall.jpg

The prime hall is rich with its regal setting and posh interior.

He claims that MBO is the first cineplex to use a four-way speaker system in Malaysia.

Toh said the absence of cinemas in Ampang and its surrounding areas, such as Hulu Kelang and Wangsa Maju and the area’s large population, made it a good market for a cineplex business.

“We prefer to be tagged as a neighbourhood cinema as we do not wish to clash with existing establishments in town,” he said adding that MBO offered the same facilities as other cinemas.

The cineplex also has an additional feature, which is said to be the first in Malaysia with its membership card that comes with a personal pin number.

Moviegoers just have to pay RM110 for a card and they can then use it to buy tickets from a ticket dispenser, which looks like an ATM machine.

Toh said RM10 was the membership fee while RM100 was the stored-value amount, which could be reloaded.

“Each ticket purchased with the card is RM1cheaper. The card makes a good gift and there is no deadline on its usage,” he said.

Toh said the membership system would help to cut the queue at the ticketing counter.

Moviegoers are also encouraged to keep the counter-foil of their tickets as these can be redeemed for gifts like popcorn or free drinks.

“Each ticket-stub carries points , the amount of which varies according to the type of movie seen. One gets higher points if it’s a new release and a blockbuster,” he said.

The movies screened here cater to all races and there are also international movies.

The cineplex’s hallway relates to the shopping mall’s galaxy theme hence the fun inspired spaceship lights, reflected on panels at the entrance to the halls.

“Each hall is designed with a different theme to suit the mood of the movie shown at the hall,” Toh said.

For example, Cine 1,2 and 6 carries the contemporary mood for all types of films while Cine 4 and 5 have a calm interior design, setting a balance for sci-fi and horror movies.

“Cine 7 takes on a disco look and this is where we show adventure movies and those for the young while Cine 3 and 8 are rich in red for blockbuster releases like Star Wars,” Toh explained.

Cine 9 takes on a distinguished medieval look with the Chesterfield design, suited for dramas and epic movies like Kingdom of Heaven.

Cine 10 on the other hand has a cultural touch to it with the batik and songket motif, for the screening of Asian movies, dramas and comedy.

The bigger halls have 206 and 220 seats while the smaller halls can seat 136.

The cineplex also has an extra plus point as the car park is just outside its main entrance.

So, there’s no need to walk down alleys and dark hallways to reach your car as it is a short walk to the car park.
Upcoming movies to be shown at MBO Cineplex include Batman Begins, War of World, Initial D, Unleashed and many more.

^^ I had a bad experience at the cinema actually :(

As you know.....I always carry my big camera bag with me so when I was there they we're a bit suspicious of what sort of camera I've got. Its okay ......so I just told em that this is a STILL CAMERA not a VIDEO CAMERA. Fine.....I tot they left me alone........

Just before the movie starts......3 of the cinema staffs sat behind me (including the manager/supervisor). During the movie the staff went in and out thus very very annoying. The supervisor/manager's mobile kept ringing. And when the movie finishes, the supervisor/manager asked me what sort of camera I was having AGAIN. Again I said it is a still camera and I asked them if they wanted to see it again (I've showed em earlier). At that point my friend was very angry and he burst out at the person for not trusting us despite having to have sat thru the entire movie and that I've showed em the equipment before. They did a quick apology and I am not going there again :ohno:

The funny thing is that the movie I am watching isn't some blockbuster and it is a two-weeks old movie....and I am not too sure why I had to go thru all the trouble. :( ....seriously .....that was like my first and last time and I must say that they've lost a potential-regular customer (I go to the movies very often). Plus some of my regular movie-goer friends are there too so they are not just losing me but them as well :D

Believe me......countless times I've had the same camera bag brought into the cinemas be it GSC or TGV or even IMAX! And I've never encountered such problem. Not just local cinemas but even overseas ones as well (Canada, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia) and this includes IMAX (Canada and New Zealand) as well.
