The Algarve's line, a coastal line (I know well) in one of the mosts touristic areas of Portugal has a huge potencial...but, like almost everywhere in this country the "deciders", obeing to decisions taken in "high places" since years, accepted the mission to destroy this public patrimony:bash:.

Yes it is shocking and disturbing to see such a mess. Don't have any illusion about the "wonderful Eurozone".
Here in Europe laws are "voted" by tecnnocrats -elected by no one european cityzen simply because they represents lobbies and not cityzen !- in Brussels and elsewhere since 20 years in aim to apply the most brutal ultra-liberalism in the private sectors ans in THE PUBLIC AND NATIONAL SECTORS too.This destruction in the rail and other public sectors (wealth, education...) is a methodical plan. It's not dogmatism , it's unfortunatelly sad facts

Ola. I was wondering, why doesn't the REFER map show the Minho line until Valença do Minho? And another thing, was there ever a rail connection to Vila Real/Chaves from Porto and if so, any plans to revive it?

The REFER map show the Minho Line to Valença do Minho (that is the official name of the land), but usually, the land is spoken as only as Valença (as you can see on the map!!!:lol::lol:


P.S.: 1)there are two internacional trains from Porto to Vigo each day and direction (one in the morning, and at the end of the day »»» 9,70€ [Porto-Tuy] »»» 2h20);

2) the Minho Line went until Monção, but it was deactivate, and transformed in to bike lanes.


And another thing, was there ever a rail connection to Vila Real/Chaves from Porto?

There is/was:nuts: the Corgo Line [narrow-gauge track (1000mm)], that departures from Peso da Régua (near the Douro River) to Chaves, but never existed a direct link between Porto and Chaves, the passengers had to travel from Porto to Peso da Régua [Douro Line»»Broad-narrow gauge (1668mm)] , and change train to Chaves!!


...and if so, any plans to revive it?
Plans to revive it, well...., we are in Portugal:nuts:, there are plans to revival part of the line (Peso da Régua-Vila Real), but there also plans to deactivate completely the entire line!!!:nuts::nuts:

The interest for the Chaves line is basically that the AVE line Zamora - Lubian - Ourense will pass relatively close to the border with Portugal (Chaves) and I though some day people might travel via that route to Paris and beyond. By the way, 20 years ago the village of my parents in Galicia did not have a sewer and we had to take a dump in the mountains, and now high speed trains are about to wizz through the same province. The sewers came in the early nineties :)

The interest for the Chaves line is basically that the AVE line Zamora - Lubian - Ourense will pass relatively close to the border with Portugal (Chaves) and I though some day people might travel via that route to Paris and beyond.

Not likely, it `s talked on the internet in forum like this, but there are only "internet ideas"!!


P.S.: but the idea most talked is to connect a future railway from Bragança to the the AVE line Zamora - Lubian - Ourense!!

High Speed - Northern Line and Belt Line


Insert the lines of high-speed network Lisbon - Madrid and Lisbon - Porto on the conventional network between stations Areeiro and East.



Under the Project of High Speed Network was recorded on September 6, the first task for the integration of high-speed lines Lisbon - Madrid and Lisbon - Porto in the conventional network between Areeiro Station at Belt Line and Station Sacavem, on the Northern Line.

The so-called Autonomous Contract 1, which is part of the overall project to modernize the rail infrastructure between the stations and Areeiro Sacavem, was consigned to the company Obrecol - Works and Constructions, SA for EUR 19 049 590.00 and a term execution of 365 calendar days, and will not have significant interference in railway operations.

Will be implemented the following main interventions:

• Restoration of Sidewalk Picheleira to allow connection to the Rua Carlos Botelho and the consequent closure of the crossing at km 8.698-Line belt;

• Restoring the Salt Azinhaga, south side, connection to Rua Joao Cesar Monteiro, under the overpass demolition of 9.146 km road to the belt line, resulting from enlargement of the channel rail in place;

• Restoring Rua Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, to ensure accessibility of the parcels adjoining the railway channel to Av Marechal Gomes da Costa;

• Restoration of access to future park equipment and Workshops (PMO);

• Expansion to the west of the overpass Av Marechal Gomes da Costa, the 5.060 km of the Northern Line, for the materialization of future lines of access roads to the PMO and the internal circulation of this infrastructure;

• Extension of Avenue underpass of Padua, the 5.945 km of the Northern Line, for materialization of the access roads to the PMO and the two new routes in European track gauge;

• Forwarding and strengthening the aqueduct Alviela, an extension of approximately 500 meters, the way station in the area of Marvila by virtue of extending the railway channel Waist Line;

• Expansion to the west of the pedestrian underpass of the Well Lane, to allow installation of high speed lines and the PMO;

• Demolition of the overpass Islands Buccaneer Street, several buildings and the fence located between 4.425 and 5.045 km of the Northern Line, in Arm Plate;

• 1. Phase I construction of the park equipment and workshops, highlighting the partial demolition of the wall along the route in the Silver Arm, implementation of new retaining wall, earthworks and drainage to the subsequent installation of the lines of parking and treatment of rolling stock to the west of the guidelines in the area between the stations of the East Arm and Silver.

The Inspection of this complex body of work will be done by REFER.

Northern Line and Belt Line - High Speed


Modernization of the conventional network between the stations and Areeiro Sacavem (Belt Line and Northern Line) and insert the lines of high-speed Lisbon-Madrid and Lisbon / Porto - Contract Autonomous 2.

It was recorded on September 27, the second contract for the modernization of the conventional rail network, between the station Areeiro in waist line, and Sacavém Station, on the Northern Line, including the insertion of high-speed lines Lisbon - Madrid and Lisbon - Porto.

The so-called Autonomous Contract 2, which is part of the overall project to modernize the rail infrastructure between the stations and Areeiro Sacavem, was consigned to the company Obrecol - Works and Constructions, SA, 4729 368.42 euros and a term execution of 310 calendar days, and will not have significant interference in railway operations.

Will be implemented the following main interventions:

• Road underpass on Av Infante D. Henry, with 162 meters long and two to the realization of future high-speed lines in UIC gauge;

• Road underpass on Av Infante D. Henry, 90 meters long, to accommodate the downward path of the Northern Line which, due to the widening of the channel rail Belt Line, will suffer a rip;

• 1. Underpass of Stage Road at Rua José do Patrocinio, 10.183 km to the belt line, which will include new railway lines associated with high-speed line and quadrupling of the waist line, including two-way high-speed Line three-way and two-way Waist Arm Silver;

• Pedestrian underpass Rua José do Patrocinio, 3.638 km of the Northern Line, to allow the diversion of pedestrian traffic that currently uses the existing level crossing at 3.593 km of the Northern Line;

• Restoring Rua José do Patrocinio, which connects with the traffic and pedestrian Rua Marques de Abrantes and Quinta Avenida Infante D. Henry, and that stems from the need to close the level crossing at 3.593 km of the Northern Line and demote the existing street pavement under the belt line in about three feet to accommodate the new channels linked to high- speed and the quadrupling of the waist line;

• Demolition of buildings at Rua José do Patrocinio, which include retaining walls, railroad three buildings, two residential buildings, the site of AMI, a set of warehouses and residential buildings, agricultural character of a building and a series of workshops and warehouses in precarious conditions.

AVEP launches tender for the preparation of projects

The European Economic Interest Grouping, High Speed Spain-Portugal (AVEP-EEIG) formed by the respective managers of the railway infrastructure, ADIF (manager of rail infrastructure in Spain) and RAVE / REFER, launched a public tender for the preparation of projects for the International Station Elvas-Badajoz, located in Fall River, the border between the two countries.

The international station is part of the line High Speed Lisbon - Madrid, which is part of Trans-European Transport and is the link of the sections of line between Madrid / Badajoz and Lisbon / Poceirão / Elvas-Caia.

This contest gives effect to the resolutions adopted at the Iberian Summit held in Zamora, in January 2009, the Minister of Public Works, Transport and Communications of Portugal and the Minister of Development of Spain, and includes the following projects:

• Passenger Station located on the Spanish side, including platform routes, ports, parking lots and access roads on Spanish territory;
• Station located on the Portuguese goods, including platform roads, facilities for loading and unloading, road access and parking for trucks;
• Accessibility to road passenger station, from Portugal;
• Two bridges link on the Caia river for a double track gauge in Europe and one for a single track in Iberian gauge;
• The technical installations railway (track, catenary, signaling and communications) necessary to interventions indicated.

This section will have a total length of about 5 km, 2.6 km of which are located 2.4 km in Portugal and in Spain.

This contract has a base price of 7.5 million euros, including VAT, and a period of 15 months for project implementation, being borne equally by RAVE and by ADIF.



High Speed Line Lisbon - Madrid

The high speed line Lisbon - Madrid will be 651 km long and will run in European track gauge (UIC), getting ready for passenger traffic and freight.
This line is in an advanced state of execution, namely:
• In Spain, most sections of between Badajoz and Talayuela are already in work or in competition for its completion, the remaining sections in the project. Among Talayuela and Pantoja, which intersects the high-speed line Madrid - Sevilla already in service, all sections are in draft form;
• In Portugal has been awarded the concession between Poceirão and Caia, a distance of about 165 km, the CTM currently developing projects for implementation.



European Funding

The border section Evora-Merida, which includes the International Station, Elvas-Badajoz, was being financed by the Fund of Trans-European Transport 2007-2013 amounting to 312.66 million euros, to co-finance project implementation and execution of works.

What these photos above refer to is the electrification of part of the Extremoz Branch-line (yellow line on the first map).

The objective is to have an electrified line to freight trains between the Lisbon, Setúbal & Sines Harbours passing by the Sines, Poceirão & Elvas Logistics Platforms to the border (second map)!

The line between "Casa Branca » Évora » Future HSR line" is already being electrified, from that point on is projected to be built a new line only for freight trains in broad gauge (1668 mm) till the border alongside the future HSR line (this last part is on hold so far)!!!

What kind of engineering will it have? Will it be Iberian gauge and use the conventional line in Spain? Or will it be standard/dual gauge and run AVE trains on it? Or a combination thereof and use Talgo/CAF equipment?

The line between Lisboa-Caia (Portuguese border) [203 Km] is being built in two phases, the first phase between Caia-Poceirão (near Lisboa) was to being built to 350Km/h, but recent news say that it will be built to 250 Km/h and at European Gauge (1435 mm)!!

The second phase [30 Km of line] that basically consists of The Third Lisbon Bridge it will wait for better days!!

It's an ALCO (bombardier built in 1979?) CP1960 series ... the same as all those Indian locos.

SECTION 1: a line already exists and is already upgraded completely to 160~250 km/h*

Oriente-Lisboa (6km in the city-center direction:lol:) = earthworks already complete , bridges and underpasses complete

Lisboa-Barreiro (3rd tagus crossing) = not looking good at all

Barreiro-Poceirão = also not a promissing future

Poceirão-C.Branca-Evora = reopened last month and regular intercity now run at 200km/h (CP5600 locomotives ands conventional coaches)



Section 2: a completely new route needs to be built

Evora-Elvas-Badajoz = they seem to have downscalled (for now) the origina projected from 3 tracks (2x 350km/h HSR uic gauge + 1x freight track with ghangeable gauge sleepers) to an almost identical (in terms of costs) double track with changeable gauge sleepers ...


It is still good enough since less than 1h runtime between Badajoz and Lisboa is achievable even at 250km/h*.



* sidenote: the portuguese catenary allows for a projected upper level speed limit of 250km/h (this because of the need to have those slow running freight trains at 60/80km/h in the same rails) ... and teoretically those sections in which the Alfa Pendular runs at 220/228km/h have that same teoreticall 250km/h limit also ... that 220km/h mark on the maps only happens that the AP is allowed to run at full speed and not the actual speed limit of the route ...
In the portuguese signaling anything above 100km/h is signaled only incab and track speeds are based on the class of the train so those 400+ km of track where the AP runs at 220 (and conventionmal trains at 200) have no current assigned speed limit.
And since most are actually brand new track with XXI century infraestructure one can argue/claim that if someone so desires they could even be put to250/300/350 km/h speeds... but then again ... they serve mostly as freigh routes ... heavy freight routes (most 220km/h sections serve more 2000ton trains than they serve AP services per day). :cheers:
