In Spring 2005 will begin the company J&T to change the Bratislava upper Danube part. "Project, which we will construct on Bratislava riverside we decided to name RIVER PARK, by which we wanted mostover to emphasize the connexion to the river." explained Peter Korbacka, representative of J&T developer. "Besides the fact, that Bratislava used to be named beauty on the Danube, the visitor could very lightly remark, however, that Bratislava never loved its river. And never was connected to the river, as they in Prague did. Therefore, we wanted to bring life to the river" said architect Erick van Egeraat, author of the project.

Success of Erick van Egeraat lies also in the non-confidence of foreign investors in domestic architects. Companies like ING therefore hire their own architects.

Great news, Wicky!
BTW, conclusion that "Bratislava never loved its river" is very common to me, because Zagreb "never loved it's river" too.
I have one question for you. I heard that Bratislava will build metro very soon. Is it truth?

@long foot: Bratislava will built high speed tram network. This is at least, what city authorities decided in December 2003. In Spring should begin the public competition about the selection of suppliers.

@astroboy: yes, this project is spectacular. As always, there were some petitions against the construction, however, people just want it.

I cant believe there would be people against this project. It would make for a great landmark for Bratislava. Keep us updated on this one. :)

Wicky, what does it mean "high speed tram network"? Is it some kind of light rail? Is it underground? I am courious, because Zagreb should built light rail (something between tram and classic metro system). Could you post map of future "speed tram network" in Bratislava, if you have it? BTW, how many people exactly live in Bratislava?

Good question, long foot. So according to the first plans is the first monorail track planned between Petrzalka and Stare mesto districts. It should drive across Stary Most. City agreement and state have already agreement about the financing. Later on is planned underground system between Petrzalka and city centre, however, this is not included in this stage.
The track should be compatible with tracks of 1435mm width. Me, or somebody from Slovakia will keep you updated on the next stages. :)

Astroboy, there is always a Green party and green activists, which just protest against everything new. The question is, whether they gain much support, so it is not this case.

It looks awesome. I'm not surprised there were people agaisnt it as it looks pretty controvertial for the somewhat conservative old people of our region.

Looks lke the complex could easily become the symbol of Bratislava.

Thanks, Piotr. I would desribe it as a definitely one of the nicest walks in Bratislava. However, the complex will be built cca. 1500 m from Bratislava castle, also not to interfere the historical part of the city.

Wicky, do you have a Bratislava construction update thread? Somewhere where all the information for your city is in one place. I would love to read about all the new things happening in your city. This river project is fantastic and shows excellent architecture. Any information on Bratislava would be cool! :)

A boulevard stretching a few kilometres long will gradually originate along this, the longest European river, featuring flats, shops, congress halls and administrative premises. In a few weeks time the construction of the infrastructure and engineering networks for the new city centre on the left bank of the Danube near Pribinova Street will commence under the project’s title EUROPEAN RIVERFRONT. Ballymore Properties, an Irish company which also invested in London Docklands known as the Isle of Dogs, is developer for this project. The two phases of construction for the whole zone should last from 2005 to 2009. During phase one, a new entertainment and relaxation complex will be built, including international hotels, cinemas, a casino, flats, restaurants and 110-thousand square meters of administrative facilities. In phase two, a new business centre will be built over an area of 100-thousand square meters providing deluxe office space. One significant part of the project is an attractive Danube promenade with large park, which will be designed by Michel Duvine, a French architect and renowned specialist in orchards and park planning.

At almost the same time, the RIVER PARK will be constructed only a few hundred meters westwards. This park will connect the city centre with the riverbank in the spirit of its slogan “a city in the city”. A five star hotel (probably the Kempinski), will form an integral part of this area. There will be 340 new flats, offices and shops over an area of more than 40-thousand square metres. The author of the project is Erick van Egeraat, a Dutch architect; the investor is J&T Global, a Slovak company planning to invest 120 million euros in this area.

The area in front of the main railway station will also change its appearance, and even the old railway station building will be reconstructed. The new main entrance will be from the current basement, at the same level as the current tramway terminal. A new administrative premises and business centre with a hotel and sports facilities will be built here as well. Another local developer, the company HB Reavis, which plans to open the new Apollo Business Centre on March 3rd, 2005, is also planning construction of a new bus station as an integral part of the Mlynské Nivy locality with a polyfunctional centre intended for housing, shopping, entertainment and administration.

Private investors will implement projects of a total value of 1.2 billion euros in the capital city of Slovakia up to 2010.

That´s the fresh news from www.slovakiasummit.sk. I hope they are not just vague words.

Thank you, SinCity, I really appreciate. I will think about it, it´s only the time, that matters.
There was also an interview with Eric van Egeraat in our TA3 news TV two weeks ago:

Latest news: Construction works began on the communication between River park site and the Nový most bridge: the main aim is to broaden the existing city communication to four lanes, as this part is the only one which is missing on the route from Dúbravka up to the city centre. The construction works finish is planned on August 26. Along with broadening of the communication the works comprise widening the capacity of existing infrastructural nodes. Article from Trend magazine: both River park and Eurovea (Pribinova zone) obtained the local area permit - the last step before issuing the building permit:http://www.etrend.sk/generate_page.php?page_id=54576

Negotiations of investor with the local building authority is described as a reason for little delay of the both projects.

Nevertheless, the construction of Karloveske rameno (http://www.karloveskerameno.sk) is in progress as the first construction site of new Danube boulevard with planned finish in 2006.

Also, Henbury development (with Colliers International as the largest stockholder) purchased PKO building and the surroundings http://www.etrend.sk/generate_page.php?page_id=51846 and this company is working on the project, which will join River park with Karloveske rameno.
