Where does the North Queensland region begin?

As a southerner, we feel it's north of Mackay? Although the Cowboys base is Townsville....

IF a second QLD state were to be federated, and named North Queensland, where would the southerly border be? Tropic of Capricorn? ....

Just curious what QLDers believe Nth QLD is, geographically, that is?

I think the most commonly used division between NQ and SQ is a straight line just south of Sarina (therefore including Mackay). I know that was proposed as the state line if NQ was to become a separate state.
It makes sense - after Sarina there's not an awful lot of people until you get to Rockhampton - and that's definately not NQ.

Yeah i think north Queensland should be where it starts to feel really tropical. One example I noticed is coconut trees. They rarely grow south of about Mackay and start to become prolific up north. So I think just about south of Sarina should be the border as well.

So, from the Fitzroy River Catchment would be the southerly border, and a straight line to NT/QLD border? In that case, QLD would have the larger share of the state :)

Brisbane will never let NQ go anyway, but if they did the certainly wouldn't stand for that.

Alot of People beg to differ, some people say it starts around Rockhampton (Tropic of Capricorn, which is where I say Northern Australia starts too), some say it starts just south or above mackay and some say that its just Cairns and Townsville area. Some people out west in Mt Isa, Cloncurry etc say that it starts below Mackay and goes as far west as Hughenden on the Flinders Highway and claim from there on to as far south as Boulia or Dajarra as Nth-West Qld.

Interesting topic shayplan, a friend in rocky told me that a long time ago they were deciding on making Rockhampton the capital of a proposed north queensland state. However we all know that Rockhampton claims itself as the capital of Central Queensland, Townsville - North Queensland and in Cairns we refer to ourselves as Far North Queensland.
Its very hard to say but i reackon from Mackay and North is all North Queensland.

Mackay is central queensland. So it must be north of there.

I always feel like I have arrived in North Queensland when I drive between Rockhampton and Mackay - there is a beach with palm trees on it that I always look forward to seeing called Clare beach (or something). Its before you get to Sarina.

That would be Clairview - I've never stopped there but it looks really nice, there's a caravan park right on the beach there. I like when the highway runs beside the beach (also on the southern edge of Bowen for example)

I remember something back in 2003 in the Paper about something that De-anne Kelly said to the Townsville Bully, she talked about her vision to have NQ a state with the Border around Sarina, Bowen as the Capital and Having......Bob Katter as Premier. If that happened, we'd be called the renegade state as Bob Katter is a renegade M.P or as the media calls him.

Thats is Clairview.

I remember going on a road trip with some friends from the Czech Republic. We left Rocky and stopped at Claireview for some lunch - it was as hot a hell!!! The beach was nice and it was January or February (can't remember).

The most amazing thing about the place was the lack of shadows - I remember my friends taking pictures of a road sign that had no shadow around it as the sun was directly above us. They took photos of everything they could with no shadow - it was wierd!!!
