The DC/Baltimore region picked up 85,700 jobs the second highest in the nation! It's the highest in the Mid-Atlantic and Philly is second w/ only 16,200.

Markets with strongest job growth since third quarter 2003:
By raw numbers
New York City: 101,100
Washington-Baltimore: 85,700
Los Angeles: 48,600
Las Vegas: 42,500
Phoenix: 38,900

Middle Atlantic

The overall numbers in the Middle Atlantic look strong. Its 21 markets have picked up 118,400 jobs since September 2003, the largest gain by any of the nation's 13 sections.

But that total is heavily weighted by the economic boom in two markets. Washington-Baltimore has tacked on 85,700 jobs, and the Philadelphia area has added 16,200.

The biggest drag on the sectional economy is Scranton, Pa., which has lost 2,600 jobs.

Wow, that's interesting how DC/Baltimore surpassed Phoenix and Las Vegas even! This quarter specifically, I believe, was also one of the best intervals of job growth in a long while. That's really good news for this area. :)

I know this is an old thread, and possibly this information has turned up somewhere else on the forum, but Baltimore-Washington stands to gain even more jobs in the near future with all the base consolidation that is taking place. I believe Aberdeen and Ft. Mead are expected to gain roughly 8,000 jobs each once it is all said and done.

I think D.C. holds about 70% of those new jobs, but in coming years the numbers will even out.

I don't think it'll even out, but the distribution will probably become more even among DC and B'more metros.

get some data that says 70 percent are coming out of B'more, and B'more is not better, it's always the B'more person taking the first cheap shot.

I'm willing to bet DC pumps out the most jobs at any time when these lists show up. But let's put it into perspective. We got New York and LA in the list as well. Holy crap I'd go stark crazy if Baltimore was making more jobs than LA. STILL, this is metro area, so what's good for DC is good for Baltimore, and that usually works vice versa as well. We made more jobs than LA for crying out loud and by a huge margin (almost 40,000.) DC, the federal government in all its wonders. Then we have Baltimore, perhaps having more job openings in the sectors of construction, retail, and high-tech. Just hang tight Masons, Baltimore is doing just fine. :)

It doesn't surprise me that DC/Balto is pumping out jobs. And good ones, too. A place to watch is West Anne Arundel County. The Odenton MARC station is half-way between Balt & DC - half hour to either city. I have heard it is the busiest in the system. Lots of new transit oriented development is planned within walking distance to the station and now that Ft. Meade is exploding with new jobs, I think that area is going to really boom. It will be interesting to see how it takes shape.

It always seems to take shape the same way...sprawl. Especially now that they've approved that dumb intercounty connector.

^I agree with you. We can always count on more sprawl. However, Odenton is a town already. If they fill it in with development that is pedestrian friendly and transit friendly, I wouldn't call it sprawl.
