Phobos December 6th, 2004, 03:37 AM Dom of Berlin
In the19th century various projects of building a new cathedral in the pleasure garden were planned. Emperor Wilhelm II. implemented the plan of Julius Carl Raschdorff (1823-1914). After de-construction of the old cathedral he built a more representative, though not undisputed central building, in style of the Italian middle-Renaissance, influenced by the baroque(1894-1905) at the same place. Two thoughts were the basis for the oversize dimensions of this protestant church (covering ground of 6,270 square meters). On the one hand the gratitude of the Hohenzollern for the divine grace given in political success in the last decades, especially with the events of the years 1870/71, and, on the other hand, to establish the idea of a central building of protestantism without confessional boarders (church union of 1817). Flanked of four towers at the corners the cathedral dom's height with lantern, weather-flag and cross is 114 m. In length (114 m) the building is three-divided from south to north: Wedding church (approx. 140 seats), dome crowned sermon church (approx. 2100 seats) and memorial church. In height :the three parts are: Crypt, Sermon Church and dome lantern. Outside as well as inside the cathedral is decorated with an extensive picture program of the New Testament and reformation.During World War II the cathedral was heavily damaged. A liquid fire bomb met the foot of the dome lantern and demolished the sermon church with the Hohenzollerncrypt underneath. Late in 1951 the cathedral was made safe by a temporary roof . Divine services and public events took place in the crypt during this period

Tazmaniadevil December 6th, 2004, 06:43 AM 9.5 I love the Berliner Dome
Hardouin-Mansart December 6th, 2004, 11:57 AM They could have razed it as well... no big architectural loss.
At least, for coherence's sake, they could have rebuilt the domes properly!
Kampflamm December 6th, 2004, 12:01 PM No big architectural loss? I know you dislike eclecticism, but it's a decent building. The new dome sucks though. But what would you expect from East Germans?
Old building gets a 9, in its current state it only gets an 8 ---> 8.5
Hardouin-Mansart December 6th, 2004, 12:06 PM ^I don't dislike eclecticism, I just hate kitsch and mediocrity being highly praised.
Kampflamm December 6th, 2004, 12:09 PM How can you call it mediocrity when it's a stunning building? Had it been built 200 years earlier, everybody would be praising it.
Singidunum December 6th, 2004, 12:29 PM it is so dirty :? why don`t they clean it a bit? 7.5/10
Hardouin-Mansart December 6th, 2004, 12:29 PM Kampflamm, in that case it wouldn't have been built in that heavy, kitschy, mediocre and decadent XIXth century neoeclecticshit style that ravaged Europe some hundred years ago: if you can't see the difference between that hyperbaroqued mutant building and real "neoclassicist" XVIIth, XVIIIth century architecture, then you are completely missing the point.
I am not of those who find "pompier style" bad just because it was contemporary with the first avantgardes... I simply try to keep sensible and discriminating.
Kampflamm December 6th, 2004, 06:10 PM It isn't supposed to be classicist anyway. Isn't it neo-baroque?
But what do you have to say about the Votivkirche (maybe you could reply in that thread)

JohnnyMass December 3rd, 2005, 04:20 AM I just wish they had rebuilt the domes as they were...why aren't any projects to do it? there's so much being rebuilt in Germany these days...it would cost pennies to rebuild the domes compared to rebuilding the Stadtschloss...

Unfortunately not in Germany Johnny. I've read some time ago that they are planning to rebuilding the domes but it would cost 30-50 million €. I guess it will be possible to rebuildt them once when the reconstruction of the Castle will be finished.

10/10 - 4 the Berliner Dom!
It's a pity what they did at the reconstruction, but even in its current (horrible) state the Dom is a pleasure to spot in Berlin. :wink2:

erbse January 29th, 2008, 10:24 PM I hope they're going to rebuild the original cupola and the lanterns one day.
It'll be a day of architectural prosperity.
http://www.berlinerdom.de/images/stories/historisches/vorgaengerbauten/raschdorff-dom-foto.jpg
Compare: Nowadays
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/22/Berlin_Dom_2005.jpg/800px-Berlin_Dom_2005.jpg
Currently even the cross on top is demounted due to some renovation works. As suggested by some architecture friends/organizations this would be a great chance to reconstruct the whole dome with the towers, since they also have to be renovated soon.
But, then again, there seems to be no chance for such a project - the cathedral is a building of the 19th century :|
An additional image to show the condition in 1964 - after the heavy bombing raids in WW2 they've only built an auxiliary dome:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/60/Berliner_Dom_1964_western_front.jpg/800px-Berliner_Dom_1964_western_front.jpg
Again, nowadays. A fucked up sight without the cross on the cupola.

Ravaged?
Most Europeans love these public spaces.
This architecture reflects European heritage and is properly done.
If anything this architecture improved Europe in all of its beauty.
The only styles to Ravage Europe are modern styles.
