It also houses the main sections of the famous Casino De Genting ;)

Actually FWH is targetted at gamblers whom just want a cheap and small room for a nap or to freshen up a bit. It is also to cater the ultra-budget concious like me :D

For bigger rooms, Genting has got the luxurious Highland Hotel :D

Eh? Why so expensive? I remember paying only RM60 all the 3 times I stayed there :D

No this is not your regular 3-Star.......in fact I dunno what star it is hehehe :lol: I guess the problem is that the hotel room didn't meet up with your expectation ;)

Luckily you've got the 'outside rooms'. I've stayed at the 'inside rooms' before and it ain't nice cos there is no view except the yucky yellow airwell and the hotel room opposite yours hehehehe :D

Hotel toilets are usually located next to the entrance walkway ;) .......unless you stay in a suite most of the time :D

yeah but normally, toilets have doors. this one is like once you enter the room, the sink is right in front of you. the entrance area is like half toilet:D

I would like to see them deserting this decades old bad-taste monster. Keep it as a secondary designate 'vintage' theme park for working class tourist..hehehe
There are still abundance of mountains and greenlands surrounding the highland. Held by Genting?? If Genting possessed the express highway then they should construct a whole new relocation park to a new location. Genting has plenty of money to duplicate a whole new city. They actually owned (or joined venture) a few of casinos in london
If they failed the bid in Singapore or Thailand, I'm certain they will do something to defend their empire. Cool highland is naturally an idea place to build a complement theme parks such as Universal Studios or Legoland. Awana golf course is a perfect location for new theme park; it's Warmer, sunnier and less foggy.

GENTING Highlands Resorts was voted the world's leading casino resort at the World Travel Awards 12th Annual Ceremony 2005 in London on Sunday.

Genting Group chairman Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay said in a statement the award was a recognition of Genting's excellent service and its ability to produce world-class integrated resorts that benefited tourism industries.

'This is also a tribute to all the travel agents and our customers who have supported us throughout our 40 years, as well as our management and employees for delivering first-class service”.

Genting's head of strategic investments Justin Leong said Genting was an integrated resort that offered not only casinos, but also entertainment, meeting places for business conventions, or simply a place to unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The Genting Group has also cultivated other renowned global travel brands such as the award-winning Star Cruises and the Norwegian Cruise Line.

Why does Genting willing to spend billion of USD into Singapore's IR project rather than upgrading its existing facilities to a truly world class resort with world-class facilities, attraction and accomodation? Their current facilities look cheap and low class (IMO).

Even with such facilities, report still shows that Genting is receiving more than 15 million visitors annually. This is an impressive statistics. It makes sense to invest more into something that proven a success.

Is there something in the offer which Malaysian government couldn't match? And causes Genting to take its business elsewhere?

wa... since when genting becoming so beautiful one huh?

I know I have no right in complaining, seeing to the fact that the Philippines does not even have theme-complexes with the same size and scale as Genting Highlands and can only muster on a small, 17-hectare, Disneyland-like themepark, Enchanted Kingdom. But though this themepark is small, it has some class in it (i.e. using not too boudaceous/over-the-top color-schemes but still colorful).

But seriously, Malaysia's biggest theme-resort deserves better hotels than the ones currently providing lodging services to its clientelle. The worst of these hotels is the Hotel First World.

I can understand that this hotel is already three to four decades old so I can forgive it's architecture. The thing is, they should seriously consider revising those awful color-schemes. Worse, while Hotel First World is overly colorful, Genting Hotel is as bland as a building could get. It's totally white! OMFG!

Look don't get me wrong, I like Malaysia as a country. In fact, I like it so much that I'm planning to visit it next year with my family (thanks in part to your convincing tourism ad). However, upon seeing the Hotel First World's disturbingly awkward, overly-colorful exterior, I felt sorry for Malaysia. The colors look so artificial in a sense that it does not mix with the beautiful highland surroundings. This hotel is a serious example of bad taste (as another forumer here puts it) on the part of the developers. I can tolerate the rest of the hotels except Hotel First World. Perhaps, I would like if they changed their color-schemes by not overly-coloring it with rainbow colors and changing it to a more conservative yet still colorful scheme.

I've said it and I'll say it again. This thing [Hotel First World] is a monstrosity/a scar on Malaysian soil. Yeachk!

Hey, I've got an idea! How about starting a signature petition to Genting Highlands owners about this issue.

Long live Malaysia! But death and destruction to Hotel First World (and it's equally ugly phase II expansion)!

Sorry if I sound like a Genting shareholder(I am not) but Genting is a company that Malaysians are proud of as it arose from very humble beginnings to world class in a very short time(a sort of Malaysian Dream) :)

I actually think that the loud colour scheme suits Genting in positioning itself as fun, exciting and happening. However, it is also true that First World Hotel does not match with its beautiful surroundings. What more almost all old buildings in Genting are plain white. Thats an ugly match. Either make them all classy white or make them all in loud colours. :lol:

Getting Malaysia ready to 'dress' the world

Malaysia has strong potential to become a major exporter of interior fit-out (IFO) products and services, says LCL Corp Bhd, the country's biggest IFO player.

This is because developers worldwide are increasingly looking for cheaper alternatives to American and European IFO contractors which have long dominated the market.

They want IFO contractors who can deliver the same quality of goods and services, but at a fraction of the cost, said LCL group managing director, Low Chin Meng.

And Malaysian IFO players can deliver, if LCL's recent track record is anything to go by.

The Kajang-based second board- listed company has in recent years bagged some huge contracts to "dress" some of the world's most prominent hotels, malls and office buildings.

This includes the United Arab Emirates' Dubai Mall and Fortune Tower, and the business-class Novotel hotel in Hyderabad, India.

Just yesterday, LCL said its joint venture with a local company in Dubai had clinched a RM93 million contract to do up the guestrooms, suites and corridors of two towers of a prestigious resort, The Atlantis.

The Atlantis, due to open in early 2009, is a key landmark within Dubai's Palm Jumeirah development, touted as one of the new Eight Wonders of the World.

Not bad for a company that started out as a mere furniture maker 25 years ago. Today, it also has a presence in countries like India, Sudan, Qatar, Japan, Brunei and Kazakhstan.

But LCL, which has a 15 per cent market share locally, is possibly the only Malaysian IFO company to have made its mark internationally.

Other IFO companies here find it difficult to even take that first step outside the country without any incentives or encouragement from the Government.

According to Low, there are some 5,000 interior contractors in Malaysia, big and small, but little is being done to promote them in the international arena.

This is sad, he said, considering how much potential the industry has.

"I feel very sad because so far none of the government agencies have actually paid any attention to the industry. Or maybe, they're just not aware of it," he remarked.

He strongly believes that government agencies such as Matrade should promote the local IFO industry abroad, similar to how palm oil and rubberwood furniture have been aggressively promoted.

"IFO services and the products should be promoted by the country, not only by us as the service providers. Government agencies should not just be promoting furniture abroad, something it has done for many years already," he said.

He hoped that government agencies will in future promote IFO products and services in their exhibitions abroad. Tax incentives to exporters such as LCL will also be appreciated, he said.

Low said local IFO players have a big competitive edge in the world market in terms of quality and pricing.

According to Low, Malaysian IFO products and services can be at least 20 per cent cheaper than those of their American and European counterparts, and the finished result could be just as good, if not better.

"Malaysians are quite new to the market, but we can provide the same service of equal quality, but at a cheaper cost. That's how LCL positions itself in any part of the world and that's how we won the jobs," Low said.

And unlike construction companies, a huge bulk of raw materials that IFO players use abroad are sourced from Malaysia itself.

"For people like us, at least 70 per cent of the components in our contracts are actually produced in Malaysia and then exported to the (project location)," he said.

So this results in a huge remittance that goes back to Malaysia and job creation for thousands of Malaysians at home, he added.

"But nobody outside Malaysia even realises that Malaysians can actually play a very good role in this sector. LCL has proven to many others that we can, but we also need the Government's support to promote this, especially in their exhibitions all around the world," he said.

Being the only Malaysian international IFO player has its setbacks.

"We don't have back-ups, we have to do everything ourselves. But if this industry were to be promoted, then there'd also be people who did the tiling, ceiling and other woodworks that would be exporting their services. We can then consolidate them, put them together," Low said.

He voiced the hope that Malaysia will play a more active role in promoting the industry abroad.

SINGAPORE: Gaming giant Genting International plc and partners Star Cruises Ltd and Universal Parks & Resorts have unveiled a plan to build a US$1bil Universal Studios theme park here if it wins the bid for Singapore’s second integrated resort on Sentosa Island.

The Universal Studios Singapore theme park, which could draw five million visitors a year, would feature over 20 attractions in six themed areas, of which at least 16 would be custom designed specially for Singapore, local media reported.

“We see Universal Studios Singapore bringing to life the biggest names in Hollywood,” Universal Parks & Resorts’ senior vice-president and chief creative officer Mark Woodbury told the Singapore media in Orlando, Florida, on Tuesday.

Currently, Universal operates three theme parks in Orlando - Universal Studios Orlando, Islands of Adventure, and water theme park Wet & Wild. It also has theme parks in Los Angeles, Japan and Spain.

“The attractions for Singapore were selected as part of a detailed study of tourism markets in the region and the physical design of the theme park, which will be larger than the Universal Studios theme park in Hollywood, is uniquely tailored to the environment and the surrounding area,” Genting and Universal said in a joint statement.

The attractions will include rides inspired by films such as Incredible Hulk, Shrek, Spider Man, Madagascar, King Kong as well as children’s television series Sesame Street.

The six themed areas, to be located on a 22ha site, are “Hollywood”, which will bring to life locations from blockbuster movies, Cartoon Studio featuring Snoopy and the entire Peanuts family and The Lost World Jurassic Park, which will be built in collaboration with Hollywood director Steven Spielberg.

Others in the running for the Sentosa casino resort bid include Kerzner International-CapitaLand consortium, Harrah’s Entertainment and Keppel Land, and Eight Wonder.

The closing date to submit the bid is Oct 10 while the results will be announced end of this year. – Bernama

Casino-and-leisure group Genting Bhd will become a global gaming firm if its bids for the UK's Stanley Leisure and a Singapore casino licence are successful, its chairman Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay said.

Genting, a frontrunner for a Singapore gaming licence, has triggered an unconditional offer for the British casino operator after raising its stake in the London-listed firm to 69.4%.

Genting, which controls cruise operator Star Cruises Ltd, said control of Stanley would allow it to expand in the British gaming sector, whose growth is expected to quicken as the country deregulates to allow for small members-only clubs to be transformed into casinos.

"By next year, we expect further deregulation in the UK gaming industry. The Stanley acquisition would allow us to take advantage of this," Lim told reporters at a weekend briefing to outline the group's plans.

Stanley controls 45 casinos in Britain and its annual sales are about a third of Genting's. Genting produced RM5.5 billion last year in operating revenue.

Genting is offering 860 pence per Stanley share, valuing the company at 639 million sterling (RM4.4 billion). About half of that sum will be funded by bank debt and the rest in cash, Lim said.

He said Genting is interested in the 17 new gambling licences that UK authorities are expected to issue soon.

"The more the merrier," Lim said.

Genting's odds for winning Singapore's second casino licence were strengthened on Friday after the abrupt withdrawal of US gaming giant Harrah's Entertainment Inc from the race, days ahead of Oct 10's deadline for bids.

Harrah's, the world's top casino firm by revenue, cited financial costs for abandoning its plans to submit a joint proposal with Singapore developer Keppel Land.

Its departure leaves the field open to Genting, an alliance led by US gaming firm Kerzner International and a bid by US resorts developer Eighth Wonder, for the 30-year licence.

Genting is widely seen as the frontrunner because it would spending more than US$1 billion (RM3.69 billion) to bring in theme parks giant Universal Studios to build family attractions on the 49ha site on Singapore's resort island of Sentosa.

"We are confident," Lim said, declining to elaborate on the project.

Genting faces the prospect of becoming joint shareholders with rival Harrah's in Britain's London Clubs after the Las Vegas operator made a US$530 million offer for the British firm, in which Genting owns 29.9%.

Harrah's has extended its offer, which trumped a nil premium merger that was being discussed between London Clubs and Stanley Leisure, to Oct 17 -- three weeks after the original closing date.

"(Harrah's) interrupted the merger between LCI and Stanley," Lim said, adding that Genting would "keep its options open" on the offer.

But he stressed that Genting was a "long-term" investor in London Clubs.

"We are happy to keep our investments there. There is no pressure for us to sell because we look at our investment in the long term." - Reuters

Genting will today bid more than US$1 billion (RM3.69 billion) for a licence to build Singapore's second casino on Sentosa island, chief executive officer Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay (pic) said.

Its proposal includes hotels, restaurants, shops and a Universal Studios theme park on the Sentosa island site.

Asia's biggest casino operator is betting that a Singapore casino will win customers from the more than 2.5 billion people who live within a five-hour flight to Singapore.

Genting runs a cruise line and a mountaintop casino in Malaysia and is competing against Kerzner International Ltd and Eighth Wonder for the site on Sentosa island after Harrah's Entertainment Inc dropped its bid last week.

"The biggest exercise before us is the submission of the Singapore Sentosa integrated resort," Lim told reporters last Saturday.

"If I get Sentosa, it's presto," he said, responding to a question on when he expects to reach the company's target.

Genting aims to be among the world's three biggest casino operators by market value, sales, gaming tables and locations.

The stock yesterday rose as much as 5% or RM1.25 to an intra-day high of RM26.50, surpassing its year's high of RM26.25 but eased to close only 25 sen higher at RM25.50.

Las Vegas Sands and Harrah's are the world's two biggest casino operators by market value.

Genting said last Friday that it owns or has received bid commitments for 69.4% of Stanley Leisure Plc stock after an offer that it says values the latter at 639 million pounds (RM4.4 billion).

The operator of 45 UK casinos will be taken private when Genting gets more than 90% of its stock, Lim said.

Genting has the second-highest profit margin among the world's 10 biggest casino operators, Bloomberg data showed.

Genting's shares are trading at 14 times its earnings, which Loke Foong Wai, a Credit Suisse Group analyst, said is "well below" the global average of 21 times for gaming companies.

Las Vegas Sands stock is trading at 55 times earnings, while Harrah's is 21 times.

The stock has climbed 18% this year, making it the fifth-best performer among the world's 10 biggest casino operators by market value.

Genting plans to use Stanley to bid for more gaming projects as the UK offers about 17 new licences next year, as well as increasing its presence in Europe, Lim said.

"Going further out, using the UK as the platform, it's only logical that Europe would be the broader expansion area we hope to be looking at," said Lim.

Genting counts two million customers in its loyalty programme, which it said is the biggest outside the US.

The Singapore bid would be strengthened by its ability to cross-sell its casinos using Stanley's customer base, Lim said. The UK was the islandstate's eighth-largest source of tourists in August.

In Asia, Genting has been in "exploratory talks" with authorities in Japan, which hasn't decided on its casino laws.

The company owns 4% of Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd, one of Macau's six casino-licence holders, and is interested in expanding in the former Portuguese enclave, the only place where gambling is allowed in China. -- Bloomberg

"Resorts World at Sentosa is my vision for a trail-blazing tourism product with universal appeal," chairman and chief executive officer of the Genting group, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, told reporters here after Genting and its partners presented the proposal officially to the Singapore government, Monday.

"Behind this vision stand the strength of the Genting consortium's track record -- a powerful testimony of how we have the means and ability to fulfil Singapore's vision for a large-scale iconic development," Lim said.

There will be four world-class attractions, with each to be developed by a global brand name and set to be "must-visit" venues, he said.

Among them is the Quest Marine Life Park, the world's largest oceanarium that will be the home to as many as 700,000 aquatic animals as well as a lagoon that allows visitors to snorkel and dive with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world.

Other attractions include the Equarius Water Park, which is nestled under the natural canopy of Sentosa's original forest; a Maritime Xperiential Museum; and the Universal Studios Singapore, a theme park that draws on Universal's rich Hollywood heritage.

There will also be six hotels, each designed to cater for specific market niche, including the 460-room Hotel Michael designed by celebrated American architect Michael Graves.

Lim said that Genting and its partners were confident that they had made a strong proposal with the vision to make it "a resort of resorts".

Besides Genting, two other bidders for the casino resort are Kerzner International-CapitaLand and Eight Wonder Asia.

The winner will be announced by the end of this year.

Genting wins bid for Singapore's second casino

SINGAPORE, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Malaysian gambling and leisure group Genting Bhd. has won the licence to build and run Singapore's second casino resort, the city-state said on Friday.

Genting's $3.1 billion proposal for the resort island of Sentosa trumped two other bids, from privately held Eighth Wonder and Bahamas-based Kerzner, with a proposal to build a huge marine park and a Universal Studios theme park.

"The proposal reflects our vision for the Sentosa Integrated Resort -- a large-scale family resort that boasts world-class family leisure attractions," Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister S. Jayakumar told a press briefing on Sentosa, a small island just south of the city-state.

The casino, set to open by early 2010, is the second of two gaming resorts that Singapore hopes will boost its services sector, almost double tourist arrivals to 17 million people by 2015 and triple tourism receipts to S$30 billion ($19.5 billion).

In May, U.S. gaming giant Las Vegas Sands won the bid for Singapore's first casino resort along its downtown waterfront -- a project that is expected to cost more than $3.2 billion and open by 2010.

"We believe these two IRs (integrated resorts) will bring us closer to the 2015 tourism target," Singapore Minister of Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang said.

He added that he expected the Sentosa casino will add about 30,000 new jobs to the economy.

While the Sands casino will have facilities to attract convention and business visitors, the Genting resort will boast a range of family-oriented leisure facilities.

Genting, which bid through affiliates Genting International and cruise operator Star Cruises Ltd , plans to build an 8-hectare marine park where visitors can snorkel among 200 different species of aquatic animals including whale sharks.

It has also teamed up with theme park giant Universal Studios to build roller-coaster rides and movie-based attractions at a cost of $1 billion.

The majority of Genting Highland's visitors are Klang Valley folks whom go there on day trips. Many are also day visitors or single night visitors whom tour package of Kuala Lumpur would usually include Genting in the itenary. I do not think that we would see droves of people from Klang Valley going down to Singapore loh :D

I for sure knew my parents ( very big fans of Genting :D ) wouldn't go to Singapore to gamble. And I know that my group of friends and myself would still wander off to Genting on very hot evenings to enjoy the cool air there ;)

Not just individuals but Genting would still be the choice of a concert venue or an event venue for many organisers. Many corporate functions like annual dinners would still be held there and so are many other MICE events. :yes:

And to the Singaporeans, Genting is still cheaper and it is a holiday destination out of Singapore for them so it would still be attractive. Genting Highlands are here to stay. I just hope they make that place classier like what they would do to the Sentose IR. :yes:

Genting Eager To Start Construction Of Resorts World At Sentosa

SINGAPORE, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- Genting International chairman, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, was in Hong Kong last Friday when his phone rang around sunset.

On the other side of the line was Tan Hee Teck, Genting's chief financial officer (CFO), who conveyed to him the Singapore government's decision to award the integrated resort project on Sentosa island to the Genting International-Star Cruises consortium.

"If you must know, I did not utter an expletive when he called me to give the good news," Lim said, in jest, during a news conference today, Genting's first media appearance since being awarded the project.

Lim said he was happy and extremely honoured that the Genting Group has been chosen to develop the casino resort, called "Resorts World at Sentosa".

"Also, I was relieved that I don't need to inform my father (Genting founder, Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong) that I lost," he said.

He, nevertheless, called the senior Lim to convey the news.

"He was pleased ... Even though he has retired, he still keeps track of the business," he said.

Having beaten two other contenders in an intense bidding, he said Genting was now eager to start construction of the 49-hectare resort, which involved an investment of S$5.2 billion (S$1=RM2.28), of which one-third would be financed through equity and the rest, via loans.

"We'll hit the ground as soon as possible, even this year, and have it running at full speed," he said.

Lim expected a 15 per cent return annually when the Sentosa project began operations in 2010, and would be able to recoup the investment in seven years.

Genting expects the three-year construction phase of the Sentosa project, from 2007 to 2009, to generate about S$3.9 billion of value-add to Singapore's economy while at the same time, creating more than 22,000 jobs to support the development of the resort.

"By 2015, the Sentosa project forecasts tourism receipts of S$15 billion, accounting for half of the (tourism receipts) target set by Singapore, making it the single largest contributor of tourism receipts to the country," Tan said.

As far as possible, Tan said, the Sentosa project intended to provide business opportunities to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Singapore through the award of contracts for goods and services such as hotel supplies, security, laundry and landscaping.

Each year about S$200 million worth of goods and services are expected to be procured from SMEs.

Meanwhile, Lim said, to support this effort, Resorts World at Sentosa would rope in financial institutions to provide financing support to SMEs interested to provide goods and services to the resort.

"Some 90 per cent of business establishments in Singapore are SMEs which employ about 50 per cent of the workforce. SMEs sometimes face tight cash flow which can restrict their access to market opportunities and hence their ability to expand.

"This initiative is our way of supporting local SMEs and nurturing entrepreneurship," he said.

You have to hand it to the Lim's for the absolutely astounding success up at Genting. Whilst I am not one to appreciate the crowds and gaming facilities, one can only wonder in amazement at the foresight, effort and sheer guts to have taken the place to where it is now. For that alone, they deserve our best wishes for the new venture in Singapore !

3 years ago when I visited Genting, I hated it so much. It was very shabby and a complete joke.

But this year when I visited Genting with a friend from Bangladesh., I was damn surprised. Genting is now very EXCITING
and World-class theme park :banana: :eat: ! :banana: Many games to choose from, they have repainted and restored all structures, and the staff service is World-class !! :banana:

My friends and me thoroughly enjoyed our Genting trip !! A must-visit for all tourists to Malaysia ! :banana: :eat:

The four awards were HAPA Family Resort of the Year (Genting Hotel), HAPA Tourist Attraction of the Year (Genting Theme Park), HAPA Specialty Restaurant of the Year (Ming Ren Restaurant, Highlands Hotel) and HAPA Chinese Cuisine Chef of the Year (chef Chan Kong Tung, Club Elite).

KUALA LUMPUR: The Genting Group is believed to have accumulated more than 10% in UK’s Rank Group plc over the past few days, and the share purchase could trigger a bidding war for the latter, which is involved in bingo and casino operations.

The UK operator has been tipped as a takeover target ever since a profit warning last month sent its shares crashing to their lowest level in seven years, according to a report on the website of UK’s Sunday Telegraph.

The report said an announcement confirming the share purchase by Genting is expected as early as this morning. The report said news of the stake would likely flush out other potential bidders including Las Vegas-based gaming company Harrah’s, the Ladbrokes and William Hill. BIL, the Singaporean company which already owns the Clermont Club, is another potential suitor.

Genting has been gradually building up its market share in the UK gaming business, buying London’s high-end casino Maxims and casino operator Stanley Leisure for around £700 million (RM4.9 billion) last year.

Quoting industry sources, the report said Genting could merge its existing British casino operations with Rank’s Grosvenor Casinos business. Genting bought a 28% stake in London Clubs International (LCI) before it was approached last year by Harrah’s.

The Sunday Telegraph had also last week reported Rank had rejected a proposal from Harrah’s which would involve Harrah injecting its subsidiary LCI into Rank in return for a stake of about 28%.

According to the London Stock Exchange, Rank’s share price closed at 100 pence last Friday valuing the company at around £392 million, down from 159 pence on Oct 11 after it issued an earnings warning.

Rank had announced on Oct 12 that its UK retail businesses including the bingo and casino operations had experienced a significant deterioration in revenue in recent weeks.

It said this was largely attributable to a loss of gaming terminals and the bans on smoking in enclosed public places, which have been in effect across the whole of the UK since July 1, 2007.

“While the recent trading difficulties affecting our UK retail businesses are worse than we had anticipated, we understand that they are shared by the broader UK bingo club and casino markets and are not unique to Rank,” the company said in its Oct 12 announcement.

In its earnings report issued on Oct 12, the Rank Group announced a 2% like-for-like growth in continuing group revenues for the 40 weeks to Oct 7, 2007. Total sales for the continuing group were 1% below the comparable period in 2006.

The Sunday Telegraph said analysts believe if the company’s profits were to recover it could be worth at least 175 pence a share within the next year and as much as 301 pence a share in two years.

To cushion the earnings deterioration, Rank Group announced on Nov 5 an agreement to provide sports betting service to online gaming company 888 Holdings plc under Rank’s strategy to penetrate selective international gambling markets through its online business, Blue Square.

Genting now owns 10pc of Rank

LONDON: Rank Group plc, the UK's second largest casino and bingo company, said Genting Bhd holds 10 per cent of the company.

Genting, Asia's largest publicly traded casino operator, told the UK company yesterday that it has a "notifiable interest" in 39.1 million shares, the Maidenhead, England-based Rank said in a Regulatory News Service statement.

Rank said on December 3 that the Malaysian company, which has declined to comment on the reasons for the purchase, held a 9.4 per cent stake as at November 29. - Bloomberg

I went to Genting highland manytime from I was young untill now.....I don't know why my mom and my dad always take me to there but I member that first time when I was middle school I cry for played the casino with my dad but they don't allowed me so I crying alone at the door until they can't stand it and took me to took monorail inside the theme park and said that in Casino the police will catch the children to the prison......You know I believe them and stop crying because I scared the police....that the funny memories about genting highland for me...Anyway this place remind me first when I thinking about Malaysia......nice place

i remember my first trip on the monorail i was so afraid of height and cried ....my sister mocked me when she rode the fast merry go round while i was sitting there watching helplessly...the only thing i remember was the cinema with moving seat and classic car that circles the lake...

KUALA LUMPUR: Genting International Plc is pumping in additional S$200 million (RM456.12 million) investment in its wholly owned Resorts World at Sentosa Pte Ltd (RWS) by subscribing to 200 million new shares in the company.

In a statement yesterday, Genting International said the new investment, made via its wholly-owned subsidiary Star Eagle Holdings Ltd, increased its investment in RWS to S$1.1 billion from S$900 million.

GENTING HIGHLANDS, Feb 2 (Bernama) -- Unfazed by the growing concerns over a possible slowdown in the U.S. economy, Resorts World Bhd, owner and operator of the Genting Highlands Resort, will continue to upgrade the facilities at the popular tourist landmark.

Resorts World executive vice president Alan Teo said today the resort is still enjoying a healthy business and that there are no signs of slackening in terms of arrivals.

He said Malaysia's economy is unlikely to slip into a recession as it is still holding strong.

"Malaysia is still holding strong as long as our local economy is strong. I think not only us but most of the businesses in Malaysia are in good growth," he told reporters after the launch of the Genting Chinese New Year Celebration by Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen here.

Teo spoke of the lot of things that need to be done to cater to the different segments of visitors to the highlands resort and said:

"We cater for different segments of the economy... we want to make sure that every segment (of visitors) coming up here get to enjoy value and that everybody has fun at the resort.

"I think value is always the key in our business plan, giving value and improving the service for the customers for them to enjoy."

For the launch, Resorts World brought along 300 children from various homes and schools for fun rides at the Genting Theme Park followed by a Chinese New Year-themed party with a buffet lunch.

GENTING HIGHLANDS: Fans of The Osmonds are in for a treat, as the legendary musical family will take to the stage at the Arena of Stars here tomorrow night in the final concert of their 50th anniversary world tour.

“We won't just go on stage and sing a bunch of songs. It's a lot of variety, a lot of multimedia ... very entertaining two hours,” said Merrill Osmond, 55, lead singer of The Osmonds. Merrill and his three siblings Donny, 50, Marie, 48, and Jimmy, 45, were speaking at a press conference here yesterday.

Their concert in Malaysia will be the climax of their reunion tour and the last time the family performs together on stage.

“We'll all continue with our separate careers but this will be the last time you will see all seven of us on stage at the same time,” said Merrill. The last time the whole family performed on tour together was 28 years ago ... at Genting!

The Osmonds have sold over 100 million records and released over 140 albums with 52 gold or platinum records.

Menara Petronas, Genting menang



MENARA Berkembar Petronas dan Genting Highlands Resort dipilih sebagai tempat tarikan pelancongan 2008 pada majlis Anugerah Diplomasi Pelancong Celcom.

Langkawi dan Sabah pula dianugerahkan Destinasi Pelancongan Pilihan 2008 dan bagi kategori pusat beli-belah pula dimenangi Suria KLCC dan Pavilion KL.

Presiden Persatuan Pelancongan Kuala Lumpur (KLCA), Datuk Shamsul Falak Abdul Kadir, berkata 70 duta luar negara yang berkhidmat di Malaysia sebulat suara memilih destinasi terbabit.

“Terdapat lapan kategori dipertandingkan tahun lalu. Menariknya pemenang setiap kategori dipilih sendiri semua duta itu,” katanya di majlis penyampaian anugerah itu, di Kuala Lumpur, semalam.

Turut hadir Menteri Wilayah Persekutuan, Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique yang ternyata gembira dengan sumbangan dan komitmen yang diberikan oleh pihak KLCA.


Katanya, anugerah sebegini bukan saja bermakna bagi penggiat industri pelancongan seperti hotel dan pusat peranginan, malah ia dapat membantu perkembangan industri pelancongan seluruh negara.

“Seperti yang kita tahu kelembapan ekonomi tentunya memberikan kesan kepada industri pelancongan khususnya pada tahun depan,” katanya.

Kategori Hotel/Resort Pilihan Pelancong diraih JW Marriot Kuala Lumpur dan Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

FOR the fifth consecutive year, Malaysia will play host to the biggest international ballroom dancing championships, this time at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands on Feb 27 and 28 next year.

The Malaysian International Dance Championship 2009 (MIDC) promises even greater excitement for dance fans and enthusiasts as more than 600 contestants from 20 countries will be competing in the Ballroom and Latin dance categories.

The participating countries include Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Greece, Russia, France, Ukraine, Macau and Sweden.

The event was launched by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Wee Jeck Seng at the ministry’s multi-purpose hall in Putrajaya.

The launch also kick-started a month-long publicity blitz.

The event aims to provide a platform for local dance aficionados to exchange and hone their skills while at the same time, promote dance-sport among Malaysians and to nurture future world champions.

The championship, which is the second leg of the Asian Open Dance Tour, will bring the best dancers from around the world and Malaysians will have the opportunity witness the world’s top 12 pairs on the dance floor.

The total prize money offered for the championship in both the professional and amateur categories is US$100,000.

“An event like this will complement the Tourism Malaysia’s efforts to bring in more visitors to the country,’’ Wee said.

The first day will feature the Ballroom and Latin dances from 10am to 4pm and from 6pm to 11.30pm while the second day will feature the hip-hop, inter-school team match, belly dance and line dancing.

The championship is presented by A&C Dynamic Dance Studio and Resorts World Bhd, one of the principal sponsors.

Cool Xmas treat at Genting

A special Christmas party at the Genting International Convention Centre touched the hearts of 400 underprivileged children.

The party, themed “Your Christmas Wish Comes True”, was launched by Genting Group chairman and chief executive Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay’s wife Puan Sri Cecilia Lim.

Cecilia had only to flick a “magic wand” before an 8ft-tall Christmas tree lit up to show off its 400 wishing stars.

Before that, the children were wide-eyed with wonder when they saw Cecilia being greeted on arrival by Santa Claus on his sledge with four “elves’.

Accompanying Cecilia were Resorts World Bhd chief operating officer Thuy Tuong Trinh, senior vice-president PR & communications Datuk Anthony Yeo, vice-president PR & Com-munications Katherine Chew and vice-president transport and theme park Desmond Tan.

The event saw 128 members from the management and employees donating a total of RM13,234.

Another 35 people donated in kind to fulfil the wishes of their selected children.

The money collected was then used to buy items on the wish list penned by both the children and senior citizens.

The rest of the money left over from the purchase of items were later distributed to each home.

Each home received RM500 to help them in buying necessities.

The less fortunate who attended the event were from Agape Services for The Blind, Beautiful Gate Foundation for the Disabled, Rapha Home, PDK Pekan Rembau, Siloam House Karak, House of Joy, Vivekananda Rembau, Rumah Charis, Bathel Care Centre and Grace Rawang.

Cecilia and Trinh also distributed Christmas goodie bags from Resorts World Bhd to their guests.

Besides Christmas gifts, the guests were also treated to a Christmas luncheon, performances by Dreamz’s Canzone band and Christmas songs by Genting’s very own Superstar a la Malaysian Idol as well as some fun games by the Awana Sports and Recreation personnel, Perry Khoo.

All the guests were later taken for a day of rides at the theme parks and Snow World to give them a White Christmas experience.

Two locations have been set for colourful displays of fireworks: The London Square at the outdoor theme park and the open car park area in front of Maxims Genting Hotel.

The Genting Theme Parks’ operation hours will be extended to 1am on New Year’s Eve. The Outdoor Theme Park will sell evening tickets after 7pm at cashier counters and mobile counters at RM21 for adults and RM15 for children and senior citizens.

The Genting Skyway operation hours on Dec 31 are from 7.30am to 1am.

Thousands of revellers who thronged the open car park area in front of Maxims Genting Hotel thoroughly enjoyed the 15-minutes display that marked the last few moments of 2008.

Meanwhile, over at the London Square of the Outdoor Theme Park, fireworks also lit up the night sky to usher in 2009.

The park also extended their operating hours until 1am to cater to the party-goers.

Performances by Genting Super Stars and Soundmac were staged at the park’s London Square, keeping the crowd entertained.

Some of the youngsters also donned clown hats and added colour to the merriment.

Winnie Au ushered in the New Year at Genting Highlands with her friends for the first time.

“We heard that the New Year’s eve celebration here is very happening and so we came all the way from Seremban,” she said.

Genting Highlands (Malay: Tanah Tinggi Genting; Chinese: 雲頂高原) is a mountain resort about 1,850m above sea level. It is one hour by car from downtown Kuala Lumpur. It is also accessible by the world's fastest and South East Asia's longest cable car (3.38km) called Genting Skyway.

Resorts World posts RM388m Q4 loss

Resorts World Bhd (RWB) (4715) , which owns and operates Genting Highlands Resort, said this year is challenging for the local leisure and hospitality industry amid a worsening global economy.

The group expects consumer sentiment to be affected by a slowdown in the local economy, which may affect visitations to its resort in Pahang.

Resorts World sank into the red in the fourth quarter 2008, hurt by a hefty impairment loss on its investment in Star Cruises Ltd.

It slid to a net loss of RM388 million in the October-December quarter from a net profit of RM344 million the previous year.

However, the group's revenue grew by 16 per cent to RM1.3 billion from RM1.1 billion a year ago.
In a statement issued in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Resorts World said that excluding the impairment loss of RM781.5 million, the group would have seen its net profit grow 14 per cent during the quarter, thanks to the better performance of its leisure and hospitality business.

For the full year ended December 31 2008, Resorts World's net profit fell 59 per cent to RM634 million from RM1.6 billion registered a year ago. However revenue rose 12 per cent to RM4.9 billion from RM4.4 billion previously.

The group has recommended a final dividend of 4 sen per ordinary share. Together with the interim dividend of 3 sen, the total gross dividend for its fiscal year 2008 would amount to 7 sen, up 8 per cent from the previous year.

YNH plans condo project atop Genting Highlands:nuts::nuts::nuts::nuts::nuts:

PETALING JAYA: A rare piece of land on Genting Highlands has been snapped up by YNH Property Bhd which will build holiday condominiums amid the rarefied air there.

It is believed most of the land on the highlands is owned by the Genting group.

YNH itself was surprised that there was land available and offered by a company. It completed the land purchase at the end of last year but did not announce it as the sum involved is not substantial relative to its equity.

YNH paid RM16mil for 95 acres which an official described as being on the same level as the casino. “If it’s on the Awana or Gohtong Jaya level, we wouldn’t have bought it,” a company official told StarBiz yesterday.

The Awana hotel and resort and Gohtong Jaya township are some distance below the peak of Genting Highlands and therefore, less cooling. The land that YNH bought is near the top where the temperature is around 15 to 16 degrees Celsius, he said.

Although the land YNH bought is sizeable, only 30% to 40% is suitable for development as the slope on the rest is too steep. “We’ll use the rest of the land for a golf course and jungle trekking,” the official said.

As for the development portion of the land, the official said the company estimated the gross development value (GDV) at up to RM2bil over 15 to 20 years.

It is working on a GDV of about RM50mil an acre, which it considers achievable as high-end condominium projects in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur can have a GDV of about RM100mil an acre.

The official said the land had been converted from agricultural use to that of mixed property development. The company is preparing layout and building plans for approval from the Pahang state authorities, and hopes to launch sales next year.

Beside the cool weather, a feature that led YNH to buy the land is that there is good road infrastructure that was built by the Genting group. The land YNH bought will also be accessible by the main Genting road.

On YNH’s other projects, the official said the retail area of Kiara 163 had been sold for a total of RM200mil. Sales for the apartment units of this project in the Mont’ Kiara area of Kuala Lumpur have not been launched yet.

Meanwhile, it has also sold the retail units in the first phase of Menara YNH, near Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The units in the retail podium were sold for RM300mil and the company expects to start construction of that in three months’ time.

Analysts, however, were disappointed at a recent briefing when they were informed of a further delay in the sale of one of the twin towers of Menara YNH to Kuwait Finance House. The sale and purchase agreement for that might not be signed till next year, they were told.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Malaysian conglomerate Genting Bhd could be placing a risky bet as it aims to take on US casino giants Las Vegas Sands and Wynn Resorts to diversify from its monopoly home turf.

Genting, Asia’s largest casino operator, is looking to expand at a time highly-leveraged US rivals are barely meeting debt obligations and may turn to asset sales to stay afloat.

Genting’s 3.2 per cent stake purchase in MGM Mirage, the biggest operator on the Las Vegas Strip, in June has triggered market talk Genting could buy out MGM’s stake in its Macau’s business.

With more than US$2 billion (RM7 billion) in cash and one of the strongest balance sheets in the sector, Genting might also be best placed to swoop on any casinos up for grabs in the United States.

But stiff competition in its new markets, still-struggling overseas businesses and a fragile global economy could derail the group’s ambitious plans.

“Growth is limited in Malaysia and Singapore and they have money to spend. Now’s probably the best time to actually buy something,” said UBS analyst Alain Lai.

“Certainly, the returns aren’t going to be as attractive as in Malaysia because Malaysia is a monopoly,” he said.

The Genting Group earns more than 70 per cent of its profits from local operations, but it has put for sale its non-core businesses of palm oil plantations, property and power generation, which together account for about 30 per cent of revenue. Genting Bhd is the holding company for Genting Group.

Genting’s international business, in particular Stanley Leisure, the UK’s biggest casino operator, have been hit by the economic downturn and stricter rules on smoking and gaming machines.

Genting’s head of strategic investments, Justin Leong told investors in London this month the company wants to be one of the top three gaming players in the world and will be patient in executing its expansion strategy.

The group, which operates Malaysia’s only casino, also owns Star Cruises, Asia’s largest cruise operator. Genting was founded in 1965 by Lim Goh Tong who risked bankruptcy over seven years to build the group’s gaming resort in Malaysia.

Genting’s stock has surged 85 per cent so far this year, driven by the resilient gaming market, helping it outperform a 35 per cent rise in Malaysia’s broader market.


MACAU OR LAS VEGAS?

Genting has been keen to grab a foothold in Macau, the Chinese gambling enclave, where gaming tycoon Stanley Ho’s SJM Holdings and Las Vegas Sands hold a market share of 31 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively.

Other casino operators in Macau’s US$15 billion sector include Hong Kong’s Galaxy Entertainment Group, Melco Crown, partly owned by Australia’s Crown Ltd, Wynn Resorts and MGM.

Some analysts said Genting might be keen to buy MGM’s stake in its Macau business if it is up for sale, but others say it may use the investment in MGM as an expansion platform, mirroring a similar move in the UK.

Genting’s investment in MGM raised speculation the Malaysian group may buyout MGM’s 50 per cent stake in a joint venture with Ho’s daughter.

The gambling hubs of Macau and Las Vegas are clawing out of a deep slump but a glut of new casinos might put more pressure on the industry.

“There is clearly an opportunity for strong firms to poise themselves to capture the momentum of the next economic upturn,” said Jonathan Galaviz, a partner at Las Vegas-based consultancy Globalysis, referring to Genting’s expansion plan.

Genting Singapore is building Singapore’s second integrated resort, which starts operations early next year, and analysts expect this to one of the key drivers for earnings growth.

On a 2009 enterprise value to EBITDA ratio (EV/EBITDA), Genting trades around 8.6 times, lower than 14.0 times for Wynn, 19.7 times for Las Vegas Sands and 11.3 times for MGM, according to Bank of America-Merrill Lynch.

“We see the potential of the group raising up to US$3.9 billion in financing ... if one assumes a 60:40 debt equity ratio, Genting can target up global gaming assets of almost US$7 billion,” said Melvyn Boey, analyst at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch.

Regulatory concerns however remain a risk, analysts said.

GENTING HIGHLANDS, July 29 (Bernama) -- Over 4,000 visitors are expected to visit the Sound Light Visual (SLV) Expo which took off here Wednesday.

The expo, which made its debut at the Genting International Conventional Centre (GICC) here, has attracted the participation of more than 30 companies from several countries, Director of UnUsUal Development Private Limited Alan Meng said.

The companies include famous names such as Panasonic, Total Solution, Bosch, TR One and Quad Pro which offer audio, visual, lighting and staging solutions for the commercial market, he said during a media tour of the expo.

The event is being organised by UnUsUal Exhibition Services Pte Ltd, an arm of UnUsUal Group of Companies based in Singapore, and supported by Genting Malaysia Bhd.

Highland venue to host prancing lions


MALAYSIA’S biggest and most established lion dance championship is back!

The 14th Malaysia National Lion Dance Championship 2009 will be held in Genting Highlands from Nov 20 to 22, with prizes worth up to RM40,000 up for grabs.

Organised by Genting – City of Entertainment and the Selangor & Federal Territory Lion and Dragon Dance Association, the biennial national event is expected to attract 40 of the best lion dance troupes from all over Malaysia.

Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, Selangor & Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association chairman Leong Lik Thong announced that the championship would be divided into two categories — Single Lion Category and Double Lions Category.

In the Double Lions category, the champion will receive RM5,000, while the first and second runners-up will take home RM3,000 and RM2,000 respecively. The teams will also receive a trophy and medals.

The championship will be held for three days. The preliminary rounds will be held on Nov 20 and 21, while the grand finals will take place on Nov 22. The competition will begin at 2pm and end at 10pm daily.

JV to look for opportunities in the UK casino and entertainment industry

KUALA LUMPUR: Genting Malaysia Bhd’s two indirect wholly owned subsidiaries have entered into two different agreements with Apollo Resorts & Leisure Ltd (Apollo), Sevco, and Apollo Resorts & Leisure Casinos Ltd (Apollo Casino) to pursue business opportunities in the leisure and entertainment industry and casino business in the United Kingdom.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Genting Malaysia said Genting Ibico Holdings Ltd had entered into a joint-venture (JV) agreement with Apollo and Sevco (5036) Ltd, which would be renamed as Apollo Genting London Ltd.

It said the JV company’s principal activities would be obtaining a long-term lease or to acquire land located at the Royal Docks, Silvertown Quays, Newham.

It plans to develop and operate a leisure entertainment destination and explore opportunities at the Olympic Festival Village.

The JV company will also lease, sell or sub-lease parts of the development to each of the parties for separate developments.

This will be conditional on a casino licence being granted to Apollo and transferred to Genting Casinos UK Ltd (Genting Casinos).

“Upon execution of the JV agreement, Genting Ibico and Apollo will contribute equity totalling £2.95mil (RM14.5mil) into the JV company,” it said.

Both parties would hold 50% equity interest in the JV company.

Genting Ibico is expected to fund its investment in the JV through internally-generated funds and where appropriate, externally-raised funding.

Meanwhile, Genting Casinos has entered into a casino agreement with Apollo and Apollo Casino.

Genting Malaysia said the London Borough of Newham was tendering for a single “large” casino licence and had invited applications for the licence. Alternatively, a provisional statement, if granted, would enable the holder to apply for the licence.

Genting Casinos and Apollo had separately made an application for the provisional statement and both applications had been approved in principle.

The applications would now go through the second part of the two-stage procedure due for submission to the borough in November. Genting Casinos and Apollo had agreed to work together for Apollo to submit the “stage 2” Apollo application under the casino agreement.

“If the stage 2 Apollo application is successful, Apollo will apply to convert the provisional statement into the licence,” it said.

Upon successful conversion, an application will be made to the borough to transfer the licence from Apollo to Genting Casinos for an aggregate consideration of £5mil (RM24.6mil).

Genting Malaysia said it was intended for Genting Casinos to be the sole owner and operator of the casino. It said Genting Casinos would have a casino licence to construct and operate a “large” casino in the Docklands area in Newham if the Apollo application was successful. The company added that the outcome of the stage two Apollo application was expected to be known in February next year.

“If selected, Genting Casinos expects the only large casino in Newham to be a successful future addition to Genting Malaysia’s 46 existing casinos in the UK,” it said.

The work on the Genting development was expected to start by the third quarter of 2012, with the casino planned to be opened in 2013.

RESORTS World Genting (RWG) was named Asia's Leading Casino Resort and Asia's Leading Family Resort at the World Travel Awards 2010 in India on October 14.

"We were up against Asia's finest resorts and have emerged victorious," Genting Malaysia Bhd (4715) executive vice president Kevin Sim said in a statement.

Genting Malaysia is owner and operator of Resorts World's integrated resorts (IRs).

Other IRs in the Genting group are Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore and Resorts World Manila in the Philippines.

how i wish they wud 'upgrade' genting into sumthin more on par with Vegas, neon lights n all the works..outdoor engineered shows like Bellagio fountain, Mirage's volcano, wynn water show etc...and ya never know, maybe home to an asian theme Cirque du soleil? right genting is borderline tacky...

it looks more like a 2nd class resort..now they just bought a major prime land in downtown Miami to be developed into a world casino resort, why cant they pour some of the investments into upgrading genting? fancy shamancy overseas properties n sad lookin home turf?
