^^ Something like that would make a great banner! Just need to change the angle a lil bit more to the right. But nice pic man, good job.

Thanks to Google Earth, I counted the total number of bridges and underpasses in Ahmedabad.

There are at present 48 bridges (26 Railway Over-Bridges and 22 Flyovers) and 30 Under-passes (14 + 16 proposed under the river bridges along the Sabarmati Riverfront; not too sure about these ones).

Also there are 12 bridges on the Sabarmati in Ahmedabad and 2 in Gandhinagar making a total of 14.

There are 2 interchanges: one at Adalaj and the other on Expressway.

Here are some maps;
The flyovers and ROBs are in Yellow, Underpasses in Red, River bridges in White and Interchanges in Green

While Surat has 12 existing flyovers, 4 are u/c and 4 more are planned. It seems that Ahmedabad has 30 odd flyovers more than Surat, despite all the talks of Surat being 'the city of flyovers'. Although there are a couple of flyovers in Surat that are very long (Varacha flyover being 2.75 kms long).

Times of India Survey

Ahmedabad best city to live in, Pune close 2nd
Delhi and Mumbai tie for third spot, Chennai, Kolkata finish at the bottom.

Ahmedabad is the best of India’s mega-cities, edging out Pune, Mumbai and Delhi in a very close contest. That’s the key finding of an exclusive opinion poll conducted for The Times of India by leading market research firm IMRB across the country’s eight biggest urban agglomerations.
But before residents of these cities start celebrating, here’s a sobering fact. Even the best rated of them barely made it to a rating of “average” on a scale ranging from “very poor” to “very good”. Clearly, there’s a lot our town planners need to do before we can boast of our metropolises, new and old, becoming world-class.
The cities we chose for this survey were the only ones with populations of 5 million or more according to the 2011 census. Most cities have their areas of strength and weakness in a matrix of 30 parameters, which ends up evening out the balance quite a bit at the overall level. However, bottom-placed Kolkata showed up as a laggard on most counts. The results throw up an interesting poser: Could it be more than a coincidence that Ahmedabad and Pune, which are at the top of the rankings, are also the two s m a l l e s t cities on the list? Pe r h ap s I n d i a ’s c i t i e s m a n a g e re a s o n - ably when they are of middling size by metropolitan standards but find it increasingly difficult to cope as they grow beyond a certain size. The experience of Bangalore certainly seems to suggest that. The two really big cities that have also done quite well in the rankings, Delhi and Mumbai, also have historical advantages, one by virtue of being the political capital and a virtual city-state and the other due to its long reign as the country’s commercial capital.

We need to keep this thread updated. Other Indian metros have cityscape threads quite bigger than Ahmedabad. It still has a very poor image among Indians. For them Ahmedabad still means dusty roads, dried up rivers, communal violence, earthquake prone and generally a very dull and boring city. It is seriously underrepresented.

And there are very few pics of G'nagar. It is still a city kept in secrecy. Gandhinagar is as planned a city as Chandigarh, but where Chandigarh is rapidly gaining popularity, G'nagar is still a babu town at large and precious few Indians actually know anything about it. Today it is just known as a place where the Gujarat CM Narendra Modi lives.

great pix.
and great that the towns flying.
but from them , with only a couple of exeptions, it all seems pretty uninspired, and - dunno if this is gonna be classed as trolling - dull realy.
dont realy know the city at all , spent a day there once years ago, some objective comments on how the cities changing might be good.
Its a rich town full of a enterprising and smart populous , so i expected something less ordinary.

Ahmedabad is not that kind of city which you can get to know in a single day (although, I suppose it is the same thing with every city). People dont really praise the city for its fancy buildings or glitzy malls, but for the social and cultural attitude of its people, which cannot be evaluated in a short span. Its true worth is intangible, it cannot be measured. I know every city has its own way of charming you, I am just telling whats mine's.

Often what makes places interesting is what they can offer to newcomers.

The town is inspired by its cultural heritage and hence the modernisation programme follows that path. For anyone outside the city they would not find it interesting since they do not understand the cultural value of this city. You have to be a part of that culture and values to truly understand the amdavad development style. If you are expecting something like NYC or Shanghai or Hong Kong then i guess you are not going to find that kind of development here yet. Let us all improve our cultural heritage first then look elsewhere to learn from, till then get inspired by the chabutras and the pols. Visit A'bad in the future!

Exactly, in the haste to westernize ourselves, we should not forget the heart and soul of the town. Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan have all modernized themselves but not at the cost of their culture and heritage. Even their loftiest skyscrapers are inspired from their culture. It is not so yet in India, we are just blindly copying western style, be it clothing or language or food or entertainment, and it is the same with buildings. We still have some way to go before we can design and erect buildings like Petronas towers or Taipei 101 or Jin Mao tower.

so why isnt this town doing that?
That was realy the original question.
Cannot this town modernise in a way that suits itself?
Other metros seem to?
Or maybe they dont in your opinion.
I can see that.

Other metros seem to?
Or maybe they dont in your opinion.
I can see that.

Ahmedabad is modernising in a way that suits it. Thread is only being derailed because you decided it is "dull" and want others to explain why you think this.

Re Ahmedabad compared to other cities, there are no one line answers for the questions you ask, this is not the thread for them anyway, maybe carry on with it Ahmedabad discussions thread if you are that bothered. But lets leave this thread for pictures of a city that is extremely underrepresented as it is.

We should have a some nice clicks of the city soon. Fingers crossed.

Want to show the world how aapnu Amdavad looks like? Pick up a camera, capture glimpses of the city and share them with the world’s largest collaborative encyclopaedia on the web, Wikipedia. The global non-profit organisation, Wikimedia Foundation, is organising ‘Wiki Takes The City’ walks for Ahmedabad on January 3, and snaps taken during the initiative could end up uploaded on the site along with a creditline for you.

Those passionate about the city and photography can join the “walks” that will begin from Gandhi Ashram in Sabarmati at 8.30 am and cover various areas of the city.

great pix.
and great that the towns flying.
but from them , with only a couple of exeptions, it all seems pretty uninspired, and - dunno if this is gonna be classed as trolling - dull realy.
dont realy know the city at all , spent a day there once years ago, some objective comments on how the cities changing might be good.
Its a rich town full of a enterprising and smart populous , so i expected something less ordinary.
:-)

If you mean that Ahmedabad does not have historic buildings to the same degree as other large cities, perhaps you're right in it feeling 'dull' and 'uninspiring' but when you look at its modern side, it really isn't any different from other large and mid sized cities. The city's geographical location doesn't help either as it is not surrounded by lushness like Kochi or Bangalore are but instead it's in a semi-desert like area.

Like other Gujarati cities, it has more apartments than bungalows/low-rise homes compared to the rest of the country (which gives it a more metropolitan feel), but the quality, style, design and look of the residential and commercial complexes are the same as everywhere else. The infrastructure looks good, to be honest.

I know that Ahmedabad, for the most part, missed out on the IT boom that has redefined other metros since the 90s, but there are a fair number of glassy commercial buildings all over, and of course a fair number of head office and white collar jobs of other industries (like chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc.).

Of the eight largest Indian cities, I definitely feel Ahmedabad gets the least amount of national and international attention and this can be seen in the fact that it is usually one of the last cities to get a global brand's presence there (whether it be world-class retailers or professional accounting firms, etc.). It's considered to be in the same category as Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, etc., rather than Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, etc.

Another thing is that Ahmedabad is not (yet) very cosmopolitan compared to other metros; it feels really regional. The city is getting better and more attention but it definitely has a long way to go in terms of catching up (at least in the sense of visibility).

You have missed out a few crucial points. First of all, Ahmedabad has so many historic buildings that it is the only indian city which is been considered to be given the prestigious 'heritage city' tag.

Ahmedabad has more apartments, maybe, but it is justly famous for it's sprawling bungalows.

I am sort of glad that we missed the 'IT bus'. When it arrived in India in the 1990s none of our cities were ready to recieve them. The infrastructure, then, was just not going to be enough for future and all the IT cities currently find themselves in a gridlock. If and when it comes to AMD, we will be better prepared.

The word 'cosmopolitan' has lost its definition in India. Does it mean kashmiris and punjabis in Delhi, bhaiyyas and biharis in Mumbai, illegal Bangladeshis in Kolkata or generally poor people migrating to big cities and living in slums. If that is cosmopolitan in India, then yes AMD is not, yet, very cosmopolitan.

Hey there,

Interesting to know about the heritage designation - I was not aware of that.

I see your perspective on the IT boom and the corresponding gridlocks. IT is in its infancy in the Ahmedabad metro area, right? Are there a few offices of the mid- and large-sized outfits now?

I see where you're coming from regarding migration patterns of other cities, however, I'm still thinking about yuppies, and other white-collar professionals. I'm thinking about the variety of shopping, entertainment and nightlife options, etc. I'm thinking of what cities pop up in people's minds when they think of India's most dynamic cities, overall.

From my perspective, Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore are one category; Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Kolkata are the next category, and then come cities like Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Chandigarh, etc.

Happens all over the country. In fact, in Bangalore - its like clockwork - Month 1 : resurface road. Month 2 : Bangalore Water supply digs it up. Month 3 : Telecom dept digs it further. Month 4 : Electricity Board digs it further - road becomes a potholed wreck. Monsoon arrives and turns it to sludge........ Month 12 - Resurface road. and so on Ad infinitum.

They can dig them under the roads, if there's enough money and motivation (and planning, they'd have to do it before road repairs).

There is a design where in ducts are built beneath the roads to accommodate cables, pipes etc

This is being put to use in Hubli-Dharwad twin cities,Karnataka.Read more (http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-05-14/hubli/29542897_1_road-works-water-works-ducts)

Well, the system is good, but what if they need to do some repairs? Dig the roads?

They have machines which can move the cables etc through the duct beneath without damaging the surface.

Awesome photos, if they just improve the roads and provide some good street infrastructure that place will become the CBD of Ahmedabad (not that it will be "central" any more, as the area is right on the edge of the city)

Pinnacle looks really good, the shiny strips are all made of stainless steel.

mer101- awesome pictures man. This is exactly what I am hoping that each and every city develop their waterfronts as. I was looking the other day in one of the pictures of Mumbai (Powai area) and I am not sure if they have developed a waterfront like this, but this is what should look like. Now all they need to do is paint those pillars of the bridges like they did in BWSL.

That's quality development.

You know its funny that if you do a google image search on anything related to any threads on this forum then most of the images that you will find will be on ssc anyway haha.

Yeah, SSCI has become the most reliable source of info for most Indians having access to net. Although it is difficult to find something on our threads if one has very little to go on, especially when they have hundreds of pages to search. :)

SSC is perhaps more reliable than any other news source out there since we do get regular updates from our forumers like yourself, KB, Coolguyz, Prawns, IU, Abhishek, MOD, Savz, GJ10, Civil Engineer, Neelabh, SudheeshNairs, Akash, SC, DeekShith, ajithv, VinVic, and Mer101, etc. and many others (apologies if I missed anyone).

Ahmedabad has a great many variety of birds (sparrows, crows, peacocks, parrots, koyals, mynahs, eagles, hawks etc) plus it has many squirrels too, I just love watching them eat with their cute little hands :)

I know why you seem surprised... I've seen only crows in Chennai :)

Drainage system is so-so. Every year they keep upgrading it, but still some areas get water-logged anyway. But generally it has improved greatly...:)

It is indeed! But it lacks something, looks raw. Maybe we should wait till the roads are complete and it will look fantastic during a festival like Diwali. Imagine- the lower promenade well lit with people strolling, the streetlights of the river drive glittering in the night, the bridges teeming with traffic and lights and the sky full of crackers  That will be truly banner worthy.

I think from Ahmedabad, two things are likely to be put up as a banner in SSC. One is the riverfront and the other GIFT city (after phase 1 is complete)

After all I've heard about how great this city is, I'm feeling a bit underwhelmed with these pictures. Hopefully it's better in real life.

Ahmedabad is definitely one of the rising powers of India thanks to Modi. If India wants to progress, we need congress out for good, and Modi in.

BTW, I never noticed the designated bus lanes (with railings on the sides to ensure they remain "designated") what a brilliant concept! absolutely outstanding.

That's the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). It's India's best rated bus transit project...We have a forum on SSC for it-Ahmedabad BRTS.

After all I've heard about how great this city is, I'm feeling a bit underwhelmed with these pictures. Hopefully it's better in real life.

Ahmedabad is definitely one of the rising powers of India thanks to Modi. If India wants to progress, we need congress out for good, and Modi in.

p.s. the waterfront was spectacularly beautiful, you can thank Modi for that too!

Dont worry bro! Ahmedabad is the heritage city of India and if the local corporation strives a little bit more they can achieve that target officially from UNESCO. It will definitely be one of the rising cities in India thats for sure (literally).

Nice pics Rushabh! Man you do some hard work getting all that, kudos to you

Nice buddy. I don't know who invented the concept, but its the first time I'm seeing it anywhere in the world, and i've been to dozens of countries. Really brilliant

The South American city of Bogota, capital of Colombia was, I believe, the first one to try out BRT. As it became successful in other South American cities, the concept was applied in India in Delhi and Pune where the response was not so great. Even so, Ahmedabad took a risk by going ahead with BRTS and it has paid off.
