View Full Version : Cathedrals/Churches- the medieval highrises
Ringil December 12th, 2004, 05:48 PM This thread is about churches which was the most beautiful/fantastic thing our medival ancestors could build.
Please fill in with others churches/cathedral to.
Uppsala Cathedral
The biggest church in Northern Europe but far from the nicest one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/ringil_sthlm/uppsalavy2.jpg
It's 119 meters high and 119 meters long and its about 600-800 years old. It is a basilica with 3 ships. From the floor to the ceiling it is 29 meters. The chruch is gothic but with a few roman valves.

some famous people that's been buried in the cathedral is Gustav Vasa and Carl von Linné and some more

Jarmo K December 12th, 2004, 05:53 PM it's far more decorated than the ones in tallinn. though i don't like its color - those red/black bricks.... not that nice from up close. other than that, it's a magnificent building!
John December 12th, 2004, 06:02 PM When was it built? It looks like a neo-gothic style.

the church was renovated during the late 19th century. It original looked a bit like Notre Dame
Edd December 12th, 2004, 07:02 PM I know that you all think that Vilnius is the skyscrapercapital of our region but it should be also known that Vilnius is a chuchcapital of our region.
I'll flood this thread with churchy stuff from Vilnius. I think that you all know the main churches of Vilnius so I am not going to identify all those churches (you can always ask how some church is called or some more info).
All photos except one are taken not by me.

WOW, that looks like the St.Peters Cathedral in Rome. I have always thought your churches are very nice and beautiful but i didn't know they were this nice!!
Edd December 12th, 2004, 08:53 PM This is really strange. S&B forum is even more unactive than I thought before. I even wrote specially this: "I know that you all think that Vilnius is the skyscrapercapital of our region" to provoke but it seems that nothing can help here. :|

Edd December 12th, 2004, 09:05 PM @Ringil: Not all churches look like that. ;) The interior of st Peter and Paul is one of the most beautiful (for me it's the most beautiful) in Vilnius. The exterior of it looks like this: http://img97.exs.cx/img97/8590/church52121gm.jpg And my favourite exterior in Vilnius is of st Anns curch:

Gatis December 13th, 2004, 01:45 AM Do I think that Vilnius is skyscraper capital in region? So so, not very sure :)
- - -
I have information about 56 churches in Riga alone and more than 800 over Latvia.
(Vilnius has more than 56??? count on the map somebody ;)
Interiors in Vilnius could be more ornate than in Riga but not that much.
But Riga has older and higher churches, he he :) Scandinavians beat us regarding the age of their churches and Estonians - regarding the height.
Some churches in Riga:
Dom - our King of churches. Not that high - 90 m nowadays. But holds enormous array of Romanic, Gothic, Maneurism and Barocco art and architecture details.

http://img89.exs.cx/img89/8317/Usmasbaznicasgriesti14aug04.jpg
St. Peters - real medieval highrise, 121 m high since 17th century. The length approximately the same. The highest wooden structure in the world until WWII.
http://www.virtualriga.com/img/pic/Riga-1941-.jpg
Now it has metallic structure
http://img73.exs.cx/img73/6039/PeterabaznnoLatvijas7sep03.jpg
St. Jacobs - main seat of catholics in Latvia but hot the nicest catholic church. Part of the wooden construction of the tower has survived since 16th century at least.

St. John's - Gothic but with Romanic origins

Reformer church - fine Barocco

Some churches in Riga:
Not sure about the exact number of churches in Vilnius but in old town alone there are around 25 churches (here (http://www.turizmas.vilnius.lt/index.php?463765457) is a very interesting and informative source about some old churches of Vilnius), according to some sources there are over 200 churches in the whole city, not sure if this is credible though.

Edd December 13th, 2004, 10:38 AM @Gatis: In booklets for tourists usually there are written such phrases: "there are more than 40 churches in Vilnius which are woth to see" sometimes exact number is being given - 48 churches are worth to see. But there are more churches in Vilnius ofcourse (but I'm not sure about the number which John gave - 200). Only in this picture you can see more than 10 churches:
http://img115.exs.cx/img115/7971/201hb.jpg
Anyway the numbers are not important. I think that Vilnius is a true chuchcapital in our region (the most beautiful and if you want - the biggest number of beautiful churches are located in Vilnius). ;) <- this is my personal opinion.
Btw if you want some numbers: I found that the curch of st Peter and Paul has more than 200 sculptures.

Edd December 13th, 2004, 11:52 AM in old town alone there are around 25 churches
I already counted 30 churches in Old town ;), so it should be more than 30.
John December 13th, 2004, 01:26 PM This is my favorite Orthodox church
http://img98.exs.cx/img98/7948/vlfsclr177xw.jpg
This one is also one of my favorites, church of St. Nicholas. Not a "highrise" but it's a real medieval church, the oldest sacral building remaining in Lithuania, built some time in the first half of 14th century (exact date is not known) while all Lithuanians were still pagans

Vaidas December 13th, 2004, 05:13 PM Hehe, nice to see some of my pictures in this thread :)
One of my favourites in Vilnius is probably this one:
http://img108.exs.cx/img108/1205/pict50491fy.jpg
It is quite abandoned, but maybe it is the thing that I like about it - its distinctive look :)
One more close-up pic:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v152/v4idas/Senamiestis/PICT5201.jpg
And in my opinion Riga and Tallinn both have some more impressive churches than Vilnius, but Vilnius outruns them in quantity and overall historic value ;)
Gatis December 13th, 2004, 07:04 PM When looking at these pictures - I see that Vilnius may well exceed Riga regarding the ornamentation. Most likely - in number of churches too (somebody open the map and count them - I do not have map of Vilnius ;). Barocco is abundant in Vilnius. Catholic churches in general are more ornate than the Lutheran - and they have two bell towers ;)
Overall historic value? I think that it would be hard to beat historic value of Riga Dom, St. Peters, Jana church and Jura church (the last one is 100% Romanic architecture btw.).
There are very many legends about these churches (Blue Guards of St. Peter's church f.e.) Only in the last year of excavations (2001) in Riga Dom cloister garden was found the famous paganic Salaspils stone idol, which is made around 9th - 11th centuries. There were rumours that this stone is hidden there - but no one was sure. The results of excavations in this garden could fill up large museum. Then all these attempts in medieval Riga to beat the world record for the height of churches, collapsing of towers over the city. Coming of Lutheran church to Riga, Calendary unrests, "stealing" of churches from one confession to another and back. Weird paganic symbols in ornamentation of Riga Dom, attempts to make the largest organ of the world (for a while they succeeded).
John December 13th, 2004, 07:08 PM As about ornamentation it's quite simple. There are many Baroque churches in Vilnius and Baroque is an ornate style. Although I prefer medieval gothic which is unfortunately not so common in Vilnius (there are quite some gothic buildings but not that many).
John December 13th, 2004, 07:18 PM Gatis, here is a map of the old town with some surrounding areas, the concentration of churches is really high (the small black symbols), although if I zoom out they disappear and I can't see the total number on the map of the whole city
http://img38.exs.cx/img38/3428/map6yn.gif
blimey December 13th, 2004, 07:24 PM heres a nice thread about churches in Lithuania:
http://tinkle.miestai.net/viewtopic.php?t=204&start=0
(better look at the last pages of the thread because most of the photos in the first pages are offline)
Edd December 13th, 2004, 07:25 PM Overall historic value? It's too hard to talk about it ;). The catheral of Vilnius has a huge historic value to Lithuania but, it has almost no historic value to Latvia. :)
Some info about vaults in the Cathedral of Vilnius:
"The vaults served as the final resting-place for dignitaries and their families of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Church, i.e. grand dukes, archbishops of Vilnius and Lithuanian noblemen. Most often they were buried in the crypts, of which there were about 20 under the floors of the naves or side chapels. The Grand Duke Vytautas (unfortunately his remains have not been discovered yet), his wife Ona, the Grand Duke Svitrigaila, St Casimir and others were buried in the cathedral."
Some more info about cathedral: http://ldmuziejus.mch.mii.lt/Muziejusirpadaliniai/Cathedral.en.htm
Edd December 13th, 2004, 07:55 PM @Gatis: Have you ever been in Vilnius? I'm asking because it seems like all those churches, other buildings in old town (for example university) are something new for you. :)

And here's a short animation movie trailer to the point (by some Polish 3D animation creators, a nicely made short film, I've seen the whole film on my PC) - "The Cathedral" (http://www.platige.com/katedra/trailer/The_Cathedral_Trailer_small_divX.avi)

Edd December 14th, 2004, 01:21 PM @DocentX: Thanks for those photos! It doesn't look very similar to st Anns church. In that older photo where st Trinity church was taken from different angle it looked more similar. Still it looks very nice and those windows on the roof seems very unusual for a church.
