View Full Version : Nidarosdomen | Trondheim, Norway
NorthStar77 December 12th, 2004, 10:55 PM A wooden chapel was made on this site around 1035, on the sepulcher of Olav the holy. A cathedral was built in 1090. The cathedral was extended in 1180, 1220, 1240 and 1300. Huge fires occured in 1328, 1432 and possibly 1451. In 1531, all of Trondheim burned down, and the cathedral was not restored properly due to bad economy. The church then burned again in 1708, and restored, only to burn down yet another time in 1719, after lightening had struck. It was then restored in a quite cheap way, partially in a borocco style.
A proper restauration started in 1869, and huge efforts was made in investigating how the cathedral once appeared. Most of the cathedral finished restauration in 1969, and the last statue was put on place in 1983.
My own pictures, wich means it could have been presented better.

Þróndeimr December 12th, 2004, 11:04 PM I edited this post with some new pictures i have taken in July 2010 made for a bigger photo-thread about Trondheim in the Nordic and Baltic section. I've
included a map and text in that post which i just copy here.
Nidarosdomen (Nidaros Cathedral) was the cathedral of the Norwegian archdiocese, from its establishment in 1152 until its abolition in 1537. Since the
Reformation,it has been the cathedral of the Lutheran bishops of Trondheim or Nidaros in the Diocese of Nidaros. The architectural style of the cathedral is
romanesque andgothic. Historically it was an important destination for pilgrims coming from all of Northern Europe.

Work on the cathedral started in 1070 and was finished sometime around 1300. The cathedral was badly damaged by fires in 1327 and again in 1531. The nave west
of the transept was destroyed and was not rebuilt until the restoration in early 1900s. In 1708 it burned down completely except for the stone walls.
It was struck by lightning in 1719, and was again ravaged by fire. Major rebuilding and restoration of the cathedral started in 1869,
initially led by architect Heinrich Ernst Schirmer, and nearly completed by Christian Christie. It was officially completed in 2001.

I like especially the main tower, the facade towers could be more massive to balance the rest of the structure.

Spearman December 23rd, 2005, 02:31 AM Most beautiful and impressive building in Norway (maybe surpassed by the Troll Platform on impressiveness). It is as tall as 98 meters, making it the third tallest highrise in Norway if I'm not mistaken, not to mention granting an exellent view of Trondheim. So I'll once again pull on my patriotic trousers and vote a 10.
