These photos were taken in Salamanca, a beautiful university city in central Spain (Castile and Leon). The town conserves many Renaissance monuments built with unique golden sandstone.

Hi Kuesel. Yeah, the University of Salamanca is one of the oldest in the entire world, founded by King Alfonso IX in 1243, shortly after the Universities of Bologna and Paris.

Really great photos. How big is the city and is it just for the students? I guess, they might be quite often disturbed by the tourists.

Salamanca have about 180,000 inhabitants, with 38,000 students living there (including foreign students of whom there are a considerable number, spanish courses industry is relevant in the town). It is a touristic city but not massively touristic. It is small in size and almost everything is reachable on foot.

Beautiful architecture, clean streets and picturesque views. But pictures give me a depressing feeling about the city, depressing or something I can't describe, something dark. I don't know!
Beautiful architecture again, thanx for posting them :okay:

It's maybe really one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen - and I only know the city by name (first even from Asterix :)) and university. How comes that such a beautiful place has gotten so forgotten? I visited a lot of places in Spain like Granada, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Malaga, Ronda, Figueiras, Valencia... and know people who travelled around the country as well, but I NEVER before saw pics of this wonderful place! :(

Splendid images of a splendid town. If we consider that cities could compit whitout considering proportions/size/population/importance , Salamanca would perfectly be considered the most beautiful city in Spain, the most armonic and perfect group of buildings joined together in a short space. :)

Surprisingly, I think is not very well known outside Spain.

The first university in Spain was created in Palencia in 1208 by the king Alfonso VIII.

I can see no contradiction; no one claims that Salamanca was the first university founded in Spain but that it's the oldest one which is true since the original Palencia university founded in 1208 does no longer exist.
