Village Mall new landmark for Sungai Petani
By TUNKU SHAHARIAH
SUNGAI PETANI: The distinctive three-storey Village Mall in the heart of town is set to change the landscape of Sungai Petani.
To be ready in September, the shopping mall will accommodate two mini anchor tenants and chain retailers such as Secret Recipe, Delifrance, Pizza Hut, The Chicken Rice Shop, Casuri, Eumas and Bread History.
With a total net floor space of 100,000 sq ft, the mall is built near Tesco at Lagenda Heights.
The landmark destination is the brainchild of visionary developer Datuk Low Yau Khee, who is managing director of Nice Saga Development Sdn Bhd.

Known for his luxury homes at Lagenda Heights, Low said his ideas to change the lifestyle of consumers in Kedah and to uplift their shopping trends were often dismissed as idealistic.
“I’m not a person who only talks. I want to improve the lifestyle of folks here so there is a place where the whole family can converge to shop, eat, enjoy and relax.
“This sort of lifestyle is found only in KL and Penang but not in Kedah. When I first talked about Tesco, nobody believed me when I said we’re ready for such a trend.
“Now the crowd converging daily at Tesco shows that Kedahans are ready to spend if the right market is created for them,” he told StarBiz.
Low said Village Mall, with its villa-like architecture and arches, was fashioned after a mall in Spain. “The Village Mall conceptualises the lifestyle of a lively community,” he added.

rizalhakim July 17th, 2008, 04:15 AM It’s now Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah
By EMBUN MAJID
ALOR STAR: Langkawi has been renamed Langkawi Permata Kedah (Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah). Kedah ruler Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah had consented to the change of name at the investiture ceremony held in conjunction with his Golden Jubilee celebration yesterday.
The Sultan said that the new name was chosen so that international tourists would acknowledge Langkawi as being part of Kedah.
In line with the name change, Sultan Abdul Halim urged the state government to improve the ferry facilities at the Kuala Kedah terminal, which is the gateway to Langkawi.
“I hope that the state government will upgrade the facilities at the terminal to international standards as it is the main entrance to the island,” he said in his keynote address during the investiture ceremony at Istana Anak Bukit here yesterday.
The new name would be used in place of “Langkawi Geopark”.
It will also be used during official functions and printed on letterheads when introducing Langkawi to the world.
At the investiture ceremony, Sultanah of Kedah Tuanku Haminah Hamidun who was conferred the Darjah Kerabat Halimi led a list of 71 people who were bestowed awards.
Speaking to reporters later, Kedah Mentri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak said the name “Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah” was a present for the Sultan in conjunction with his Golden Jubilee.
“I believe the name Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah is much more suitable for the island compared to Geopark or Pulau Lagenda,” he said.

Beliau berkata, konsep ekopelancongan turut diberi perhatian untuk menambah tarikan seperti mengekalkan pokok di sekeliling padang itu, menambah tanaman pokok, menanam padi dan serai.

nazrey October 28th, 2008, 07:56 PM Kedah upbeat on projects
Tuesday October 28, 2008
ALOR STAR: Several of the 18 tourism projects in Kedah -- involving RM79mil -- set to be implemented this year under the Ninth Malaysia Plan are completed.
Kedah Tourism Action Council chairman Datuk Othman Aziz said five of the projects were completed on schedule, one ahead of schedule, three delayed and the rest set to be finished on time.
The completed projects involved the building of infrastructure and beautification of tourist spots in Pasir Hitam and Pantai Cenang, the area around Gunung Jerai and the Flora and Fauna Park in Titi Hayun, and upgrading of tourist facilities at the Bukit Hijau recreational park, Kulim.
Speaking to reporters at an Hari Raya open house at the Kedah Tourism Malaysia office here, Othman said the completed projects cost RM6.5mil.
He said 10 projects were going on as scheduled and are expected to be completed by the end of the year. He said the Kedah Tourism Board would focus next year on a homestay programme themed “Holidays, Tourism and Students” and eco-tourism projects to attract more domestic tourists.
“Today’s open house is the start of a new tourism promotion campaign called ‘Zoom! Malaysia’ that portrays the country with a dynamic identity, providing continuity to the ‘Cuti-cuti Malaysia’ campaign.” - Bernama

nazrey October 29th, 2008, 06:11 AM what is that town?
Zulhelmi November 5th, 2008, 09:00 AM I honestly though Alor Star changed a lot since the Golden Jubilee celebration. More tourist attractions are created and better facilities are provided.
In Langkawi, the ferry terminal at Kuah is upgraded for some time and it looks like an airport terminal!
Zulhelmi November 5th, 2008, 09:09 AM what is that town?
I think he meant suburbs in Alor Star. The nearest town would be Jitra, which is the 3rd largest urban area in Kedah. Suburbs in Alor Star like Anak Bukit, Mergong, Simpang Kuala, Kuala Kedah and Tandop are growing fast.
For example, Anak Bukit has completed building gov complexes and syariaah court. It also welcomes new residential areas which also include residents priced up to RM600k and planned Anak Bukit Railway Station. Mergong with its Star City project that includes the current Tesco Mergong. Tandop is currently building a new township called Stargate which include the 2nd Tesco of Alor Star.

November 18, 2008 22:33 PM
ALOR STAR, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- The Kedah government today tabled its 2009 budget totalling almost RM1.3 billion, an increase of more than RM200 million compared to this year's.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said over RM505 million was for management expenses. This year's allocation was RM502 million.
Of the total management expenses, RM206 million for emoluments, RM96 million for services and supplies, RM185 million for grants and fixed payments, RM6 million for asset procurements and RM10 million for other expenses.
The state government also allocates RM425 million for development projects, an increase of over RM148 million compared to this year's.
"The development estimate comprises state development consolidated fund totalling over RM250 million and loans from the federal government amounting to RM175 million," said Azizan in the State Legislative Assembly.
He said the bigger budget was because revenue in 2009 was expected to increase 0.5 percent to RM487 million from RM484 million this year.
Of the total revenue, RM261 million will come from taxes and RM57 million from non-tax revenue while non-tax receipts such as returns from expenditure are RM168 million.
Azizan said that to deal with effects from the world economic crisis, the state government would focus on developing the agriculture, manufacturing and tourism sectors.
"For these activities, the government will allocate RM314 million for infrastructure, followed by agriculture RM29 million, tourism RM8 million, community RM5.6 million, sports RM800,000 and information and communication technology RM2 million," he said.
He said the state government would also intensify efforts to generate income through foreign investments by developing the Kulim High-Tech Park further.
The park had so far received RM27 billion worth of investments, he said.

Sime Darby gets Govt aid to develop RM7.5b project
LANGKAWI: The Federal Government is ready to help Sime Darby Bhd with the development of the RM7.5bil Eagle Cove project in Pantai Kok.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcob said the project was to be developed under four phases encompassing the construction of a hospital, residential area, resort, a convention centre and an international standard commercial complex.
He said the project, to cover over 160ha in size, was expected to take 10 years for development and could make Malaysia a second home for foreigners once fully completed by Sime Darby Property.
“The Federal Government will be discussing with the state government of Kedah if there are areas involving the state government,” he told reporters after attending a briefing yesterday on the project by managing director of Sime Darby Property Datuk Tunku Putra Badlishah.
Nor Mohamed said the project was expected to create 3,000 job opportunities for the locals. — Bernama
