Pablo September 17th, 2003, 03:43 PM BETWEEN 30 and 40 penguins may be sourced for a RM25mil project to feature three ecosystems at the Langkawi Underwater World by May next year.
American environmental consultant Frank S. Todd, better known as the ''penguin man,'' has been enlisted by Eden Enterprises (M) Bhd to help source the birds. Both the Langkawi Underwater World and Eden Enterprises are subsidiaries of the Eden Group of Companies.
“The major challenge for the project is acquiring the birds. However, a few hurdles have been overcome as I have located between 30 and 40 surplus penguins from different countries.
“They comprise tropical penguins of South American and South African origins – Humboldt, Black-footed and Magellanic – as well as the sub-Antarctic Rockhopper,” Todd said in Penang on Monday.
He said these figures may fluctuate according to their availability and changing market demand.
For every penguin available, there are usually 10 people who want it although one costs thousands of US dollars, said Todd, 60, who has spent 30 years in researching and writing about penguins.
The brainchild of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the project will involve the building of a new facility to complement the underwater world's existing complex.
The new one will display the Amazonian, sub-Antarctic and Antarctic ecosystems and house a three-dimensional (3D) theatre with a 200-seating capacity.
The project's consultant architect Dr Tan Boon Hock said the new facility was more complex to construct than building a hotel or office building.
“We are building a penguinarium, which comprises two penguin complexes, to house the birds.
“In one of the complexes, there will be an underwater tunnel for visitors to view swimming penguins and fishes.
“To make the penguin tunnel, believed to be Asia's first of its kind, we cannot use glass as it cannot be bent.
“Thus, we have to commission a China-based factory to manufacture and assemble acrylic panels for the tunnel and our other displays,” he said, adding that the project which started in April, was currently about 15% completed.
Underwater World Langkawi Sdn Bhd general manager Haji Tanzil Mohd Noor said apart from targeting tourists, the new double-storey building was also poised to become a world-class referral centre for marine life and penguins.
He said they would forge collaborations with academic institutions and other research organisations to encourage scientists to use the new facility with a 5,000 sq m built-up area.
Although penguins would be the new facility's main attraction, other animals may include anacondas, primates, sloths, capybaras, jays and macaws, he added.

Penguins; What Do You Know?
Now, we all know the basics about penguins, but just how much do we really know? Presented here are several facts about penguins which you may not know, and some misconceptions about these birds, man's only natural enemy.
First off, many people assume that the penguin's diet consists mainly of fish. This is plainly false. Penguins will, in fact, eat many things. Chief among these is human flesh. Also, penguins have been known to eat: inner tubes, expensive caviar, trees, small dogs named "Rex", high school gym teachers, and bagels. Such a volatile diet will often times cause penguins to explode violently, forming small craters in the ground.
Another thing that is largely unknown to the general public is the social structure of penguins. Now, it is known by many that there are "emperor penguins," but few know what this actually signifies. Every emperor penguin will have an "empire" usually consisting of 10-100 "lesser penguins." The empires will then hold battles for small pieces of land, which the winner keeps. The winning empire will usually leave the land, having forgotten why they were there in the first place. The fierce battles have been described as "terrifying," "bloody," and "awfully cute."
Indeed, the "cuteness" of penguins is their most powerful weapon. When looking upon a penguin, many people experience the urge to hug the bird. This would be a grave mistake, for when you hug a penguin, the penguin will take advantage of your vulnerability, pecking you to death and then eating your heart.
Penguins are most certainly man's greatest natural enemy. There have been many stories of lost travelers being devoured by roving empires of penguins, but these can never be verified, as an empire will leave no one alive to tell the tale. Penguins are extremely dangerous, and should only be handled with utmost hostility. Indeed, you should never get too close to a penguin unless heavily armed.

szehoong June 17th, 2004, 11:43 AM Welcome Cairel!
Langkawi is already a tourist destination in its own right and they dun need Six Flags or Disney or Universal to be there. People go there for a resort atmosphere not for theme parks apparently. Having a themepark in Langkawi would be more of a bane than a benefit to the island's charm ;)
A Six Flag themepark would be nice (and appropriate) if located somewhere around Penang, Klang Valley or Johor Bahru :D

To strike a balance - it would be Universal Studios ;)

I played the Six Flags theme park scenario in Rollercoaster Tycoon and the rollercoasters there were, like, SHIOK MAN! Cosmos World is considered kacang putih compared with the Six Flags...
In my opinion, Six Flags should consider having its first Asian theme park here in good ol' KL... The market here is large enough to support such an attraction, furthermore most young ppl here like going to theme parks if they had a choice right?

eee Sze Hoong, I dun agree....I still think Langkawi's main selling point should be her natural attractions. Something like a theme park should be placed (IMO) in a location where you wanna liven up the area so to speak. I think, Butterworth would be a nice location, untouched, lots of space and the KTM rail right there. Perfect to boost tourism to an underserved area and perhaps kick off quality development there :P

February 16, 2005 19:10 PM News (http://bernama.com.my/bernama/state_news/news.php?id=119506&cat=nt)
ALOR STAR, Feb 16 (Bernama) -- The Kedah government plans to build the RM1.2 billion South Kedah Highway (LEKAS) to upgrade the road communications between industrial estates in the south of the state.
http://bernama.com.my/bernama/newspic/ge/SYED%20RAZAK1.jpg
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Syed Razak Syed Zain
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Syed Razak Syed Zain said the project would start as soon as it received the green light from the Cabinet and the Public Works Department.
"The highway will pass through Bandar Baharu, Serdang, Kulim, Lunas, Kuala Ketil and Sungai Petani," he told a press conference after chairing the State Executive Council meeting here Wednesday.
Syed Razak said the 67.4km highway would comprise 60.4km of new road and seven km of the existing road.
It will be a Build-Operate-Transfer project with a 33-year concession period.
The highway will be designed as a two-lane dual carriageway with a motorcycle lane, seven interchanges, 13 new bridges, rest areas and landscaping.
Syed Razak said the highway project would help spur economic growth in line with the objective to make Kedah a developed state by 2010 and provide more job opportunities to the people.
Kedah hopes to record a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of between 10 and 15 per cent a year until 2010.
He said the state targeted a GDP of RM36.6 billion by 2010.

World’s longest treetop walk
By V.CHANDRASEKARAN
FANCY strolling on the world's longest treetop canopy walk?
Well, you do not need to travel overseas to do that. Just head to the Sungai Sedim white water rafting recreational site, about 30km from Kulim, Kedah.
Work on the 950m-long treetop walk costing RM4.5mil is nearing completion, said Kedah Culture, Arts and Tourism Committee chairman Nawawi Ahmad recently.
Traversing the Gunung Inas Rain Forest Reserve, the Sungai Sedim Treetop Walk is 33m above the ground at its highest point and spans about 50ha of the jungle.
The reinforced steel structure comes with railings and can hold up to 30 metric tonnes on any stretch of the walk.
Construction started early last year and was done with minimal damage to the environment there, said Nawawi.
“We want nature lovers to enjoy viewing this beautiful virgin jungle,” he said.
He added that more than 30 flora and fauna species had been identified in the area.
He said even wheelchair-bound nature lovers could move easily on the treetop walk.
Besides souvenir shops and an information centre, a dormitory that can accommo-date 150 persons have been built for those who want to spend a night in the reserve.
Nawawi said there were plans to set up bird and deer parks beneath the treetop walk.
He said that there were also plans to offer a “night walk” for visitors to get a glimpse of nocturnal animals.
“Those who wish to swim can do so in the stream under the treetop walk,” he said.
Other facilities will also be available, including jungle trekking trails and camps, he said.
Plans are underway to widen the access road to ca- ter to tourist buses. “This is going to be an important tourist attrac- tion in the northern region.
“ We hope to get tour operators in Langkawi and Penang to include the treetop walk in their programmes,” he said.
nazrey June 8th, 2005, 02:46 PM Kuala Kedah-Langkawi Ferry Fare RM3 More From June 15
June 08, 2005 19:47 PM
ALOR STAR, June 8 (Bernama) -- The one-way ferry fares between Kuala Kedah and Kuah, Langkawi, for both adults and children will go up by RM3 each from June 15.
The fare for an adult will be RM18 and a child, RM12.
The fares for senior citizens, schoolchildren and the disabled will also increase from RM9 to RM12 each.
Langkawi residents and employees in the public and private sectors who are based on the island will not be affected by the increase, but they have to prove their status by producing identity cards or other relevant documents at the ticket counters.
Speaking to reporters after chairing the State Executive Council meeting here Wednesday, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Syed Razak Syed Zain said the increase had been approved by the federal and state governments.
He said the increase would not burden the people.
Last year, four ferry operators in Kuala Kedah and Langkawi had proposed a RM9 fare increase for both adults and children, but was opposed by many parties, especially the local residents.
Meanwhile, Chairman for the State Arts, Culture and Tourism Committee Nawawi Ahmad said the Transport Ministry had approved the state government's proposal to introduce economy class ferry and budget ferry for the same route as an alternative.
The ministry had also approved a RM3 fare increase for the Kuala Perlis-Langkawi ferry one-way route, making it RM15 for an adult and RM10 for a child.

Northern region to get another water theme park
BY HANI SHERLIZA
The northern region will soon have another water theme park akin to the one at Bukit Merah Laketown resort in Perak.
Project developer Beh Huck Lee, who is managing director of Eupe Corporation, said the seven-hectare water theme park costing “a few million ringgit” would use a Canadian concept.
He said work to construct the project would start in January and scheduled to be completed in a year’s time.
He said the park would be sited within the grounds of Cinta Sayang Golf and Country Resort in Sungai Petani.
He said this at the launching of the country’s very first golf resort academy – the Cinta Sayang Rinuva Golf Academy - which was held in conjunction with its Golf Challenge & Carnival 2005 yesterday.
In his speech, Eupe executive chairman Datuk Tajudin Hashim said the academy would put the resort on the world golfing map.
He said the resort was committed to promoting golf tourism in the country.
“The academy will be the first golf academy in the northern region and will be a boost for golf enthusiasts to learn every aspect of golf.
“The academy will strive to be the accepted centre for golf education,” he said.
The RM500,000 golf academy jointly managed by the resort and Rinuva Golf is the first in Asia using software-based training facilities.
Among the facilities available at the academy are a 300-yard twin driving range with 38 bays for day and night practice and a new cafe.
Also present were Cinta Sayang executive chairman Yeong Chee Fun and Cinta Sayang Rinuva Golf Academy director Rilly Soon.

“It will be Kedah UPP's new headquarters,” he said at the handing over of duties to new Kedah UPP commander Mohd Noor Idris at a hotel.
The present Kedah UPP headquarters is located in Alor Star.
Abdul Rahim, 50, will be joining the Johor Customs Department's export division as senior assistant director II on Jan 23.
Mohd Noor, 46, was previously the Perlis Customs Department senior assistant director.
Abdul Rahim said the unit seized RM1.4mil worth of smuggled goods and arrested 124 illegal immigrants from January to October last year.

SUNGAI PETANI: Kedah is drawing up a comprehensive plan on its first automotive city, to be set up in Gurun, about 30km from here.
Kedah's Industry, Science, Technology, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Chinese Community Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Chong Itt Chew, who heads the state planning unit committee, said the physical planning for the project would be completed in six months.
'However, it will take more than six months for the state government to fully implement the automotive township,”he told reporters after opening the RM10mil Mercedes-Benz Autohaus showroom or Asbenz Motors Autohaus on Wednesday.
He was representing Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Mahdzir Khalid.
“For Gurun to be picked as one of the automotive cities under the National Automotive Policy framework is indeed a boost for Kedah, which is working towards becoming a developed state,” he added.
Earlier in his speech, Chong said Germany was the biggest investor in Kedah, with German company Infineon pumping in RM4bil to its wafer-production facility in the Kulim Hi-Tech Park (http://www.khtp.com.my/) last year.
He said Kedah government's fast-track service in handling foreign investors and the investment by Infineon had triggered further foreign interests in Kulim Hi-Tech, such as Intel of the US, which had invested RM850mil, and Fuji Electric, which would pump in RM1bil next month.
“We’ve also set up a special committee to take care of foreign investors with minimum investments of RM100mil and offer them fast-track approvals,” he added.
Authorised Mercedes-Benz dealer Azbenz Motors Sdn Bhd chief executive officer, Datuk Tony Khor, said the new RM3.5mil Autohaus at the Bakar Arang light industrial estate was designed to give customers a comfortable and supportive environment.
Also present was Datuk Frank Steinleitner, the president and chief executive officer of Daimler-Chrysler Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the principal company for Mercedes-Benz.

PANTAI Merdeka is set for a major facelift from a mere idyllic seaside with swaying casuarinas to a bustling seaside resort complete with facilities and amenities to cater to a new niche tourist market under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
Sungai Petani Municipal Council Planning Department chief Mohd Amin Ali said, currently, the resort drew mainly locals and domestic tourists from the northern states and not many foreign visitors.
He said the resort was a favourite venue of government departments from the northern states for holding conventions and meetings.
Mohd Amin also said the federal government had approved an allocation of more than RM20mil for the project which would be carried out in two phases.
He said the first phase, costing RM8mil, would involve turning the place into a premier tourist attraction in Kedah.
The second phase, he said, would involve the construction of a jetty with four landing spots.
Currently, he added, there was no jetty for visitors to hop on and off the boats at the beach.
The waiting area at the jetty would have covered roofing, comfortable seats and guardrails for the safety of the people, he said.
“We will also demolish the 21 existing food stalls, upgrade the pedestrian walk and landscape the area,” he said, adding that 30 new food stalls would be constructed.
A surau, public toilets, a playground, an information centre and souvenir shops would also be provided.
“We will retain the existing casuarina trees and coconut trees. We will also put up attractive new signboards all the way to Pantai Merdeka,” he added.
He said tourists could go “island-hopping” from Pantai Merdeka to nearby Pulau Bidan, Pulau Bunting and Pulau Song Song.
“Pulau Bidan and Pulau Bunting have sandy beaches all around the islands. The clear water is suitable for swimming, fishing and snorkelling.
“Pulau Bidan, which is surrounded by corals, is a favourite among Japanese tourists,” he added.
He also said once it was completed and the infrastructure was in place, Pantai Merdeka could be the northern region's water-sports centre.
“Why should we allow all the water activities to be centred in states like Penang, for instance, when we have the islands, jetty and water-sports activities here,” he said.
How To Get There
TOURISTS can take a bus from Alor Setar or Butterworth to Sungai Petani. From there, one can catch a bus to Tikam Batu to transfer to another bus to Pantai Merdeka.
For those driving there, head towards Tikam Batu town and follow the signboards all the way in for the approximately 15km drive to Pantai Merdeka.

SUNGAI PETANI: Beautification projects by the Sungai Petani Municipal Council to spruce up the town have been put on hold pending the Anti-Corruption Agency's investigations into its RM390,000 clock tower project.
Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the council should only proceed with projects which would benefit the rakyat and defer unnecessary ones until the investigations were completed.
“I have asked the council to submit a full report on the clock tower project to me as soon as possible,” he said after opening the new extension building of Ryco Hydraulics in Kuala Ketil, near here, yesterday.
Mahdzir was commenting on The Star’s report on the council’s well-intentioned move to turn Sungai Petani into a picturesque town with 10 decorative clock towers which cost RM390,000.
The beautification project turned awry when the clocks stopped functioning.
Two of the clocks were confiscated by the ACA to facilitate investigations after it received a public complaint on irre- gularities concerning the project.
On Sunday, council presi-dent Adzmi Din said the project, approved during the tenure of his predecessor Datuk Abdul Rahman Ahmad, “could have been carried out in good faith”.
Adzmi, who assumed the president’s post last month, confirmed that he had deferred various “holdable” projects which had been approved until they had been vetted by him within the next six months.

AN assemblyman wants the Kedah Government to help promote eco-tourism acti- vities in the state by creating a new gateway to Thailand via Ba- ling.
Kupang assemblyman Datuk Ismail Abu Bakar said presently, the passage to Betong in Thailand was accessible only by way of Pengkalan Hulu in Perak from Baling.
He said the distance from Baling to Betong was about 30km, or about 15 minutes’ drive.
“The state government could set up a new international gateway from Siong in Baling to enable a two-way flow of tourists between Kedah and Thailand,” he said.
Ismail said the proposed new gateway to Thailand could help generate revenue for Baling where there were plenty of eco-tourism products to be enjoyed by foreign tourists such as hot springs, waterfalls, local handicrafts, and cave adventures.
He added that Kroh in Perak was currently enjoying immense business spillover from the Pengkalan Hulu checkpoint as tourists would stopover in the town for some shopping and relaxation before continuing their journey.
Ismail said the government could also improve the infrastructure in Baling, which was steeped in his-tory, to encourage tourists to stop over.
“There are hundreds of traditional elderly masseurs who can be housed in one centre to give tourists some therapeutic massage after which they can immerse themselves in the hot spring at Ulu Legong Hotspring Recreation Park in Siong,” he said in Alor Star.
Ismail said nature lovers could also explore the many caves in Baling or spend some relaxing time at a few of the scenic waterfalls there.
He also proposed that the state set aside some allocation for the kampung folk to promote local handicrafts like Wau Baling and food products from the many cottage industries found in Ba- ling.

The completion of the new terminal and extended runway at Sultan Abdul Halim Airport will be delayed by another four months.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the facilities, scheduled to be operational next month, would only be ready in December.
With the new facilities, he said, the airport would be able to accept larger aircraft, including the Airbus 330 and Boeing 737-400.
Chan, who visited the airport today, said it would also be able to handle regional flights to Indonesia and Thailand.
"There are discussions to have flights to destinations such as Medan, as well as several cities in Thailand and other neighbouring countries," he said.
The re-development is costing RM160 million.
The new terminal building will be able to handle more passengers, while the 1,963m runway is being extended to 2,745m.
Chan said the delay was due to technical and engineering problems.
Expansion works began in February 2003.
Airport manager Halim Omar said passenger volume had increased from 357,000 in 2003 to 359,000 last year.
Proposal to build new airport frozen indefinitely

Media : The Star
A proposal to build an international airport in the northern region has been put on hold indefinitely.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the issue of reviving the proposed project off Kuala Muda in Kedah that was shelved during the 1997 economic slowdown had not been raised.
He said the existing Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, being redeveloped at a cost of RM160mil, could adequately cater to current needs.
Speaking after a briefing here on the progress of the project yesterday, he said the state's request to include international flights to and from here would be looked into.
¡§We will be working closely with MAS and AirAsia. I think it is possible to include regional destinations, including Thailand and Sumatra,¡¨ said Chan.
The airport is at present handling domestic and general aviation flights as well as being used by the Air Force for pilot training.
Chan said the first phase of the airport expansion project to extend the runway from 1,963m to 2,745m was progressing well, adding that it would be completed by next month.
The second phase, for a new terminal, control tower and Department of Civil Aviation office, would be completed by the end of November, he said, adding that technical hurdles had delayed the project.
By the end of the year, the airport is expected to be able to handle 580 passengers an hour compared with 280 at present.
Chan said that with the expansion, the airport would have two departure halls and 300 parking lots compared with the current 180.
The airport recorded a passenger load of 359,000 last year compared with 357,000 the year before.
Terminal to operate by February
Saturday November 12, 2005
ALOR STAR: The RM160mil Sultan Abdul Halim Airport new terminal and extended runway here would be fully operational by end of February next year.
Construction work will be completed by next month.
Bina Darulaman Berhad group managing director Ba-drul Hisham Tahir said with the additional facilities, the airport would be able to cater to more passengers and han-dle bigger aircraft, including Air-bus 330 and Boeing 737-400.
The airport would be able to handle 580 passengers an hour compared with 280 now, he said.
“Malaysia Airport Berhad will conduct testing on the equipment for two months beginning end of December before the terminal and the new 2,745m runway are fully functional,” he said.
Badrul Hisham was speak-ing to reporters after accom-panying Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Syed Razak Syed Zain and Malaysia Airport Ber-had manager Halim Omar on their visit to the airport yesterday.
He said contruction of a flyover, costing RM15mil, linking the airport and the Jalan Anak Bukit dual carriageway would start soon.

ALOR STAR, May 4 (Bernama) -- The new terminal of the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Titi Gajah near here will start operation tomorrow.
Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd general manager Abdul Rahman Karim said Thursday the RM162 million terminal would receive its first flight, an AirAsia Airbus 330 flight, at 8.55am.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy would be among the passengers of flight AK6346 from Kuala Lumpur. The return flight AK6347 would leave for Kuala Lumpur at 11.40am.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid would be on hand to receive the passengers.
With the opening of the new terminal, the old one in Kepala Batas will cease operation at 9.30 tonight with the departure of a MAS Boeing 737 flight MH1253 for the KL International Airport (KLIA).
Abdul Rahman, in a briefing for journalists, said the new two-storey terminal, located about 2km from the old terminal and surrounded by padi fields, had capacity to handle 800,000 passengers a year and could accommodate the passenger needs until 2059 based on current conditions.
With a 2,745m long and 45m wide runway, it can receive two Airbus 330 and a Fokker 50 aircraft at any one time.
Completed on March 31, it has facilities like a surau, restaurant and souvenir stalls.
Abdul Rahman said there were suggestions to turn the old terminal into an aviation academy but no official decision had been made.
However, the hajj complex would remain at the terminal, which had been in operation since 1980, as required by the state government, he said.

ALOR STAR, May 5 (Bernama) -- An AirAsia Airbus A320 for the first time landed at the The Sultan Abdul Halim (LTSAH) Airport, denoting the official opening of the new terminal to cater bigger aircraft.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy, AirAsia's Chairman Datuk Pahamin Rajab and its Chief Excutive Officer Datuk Tony Fernandes, and the Managing Director of Malaysia Airport Berhad (MAHB) Datuk Bashir Ahmad were among 79 passengers on the plane.
Their arrival was received by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, state exco members and other senior officers of MAHB.
The new terminal building and the runaway extended by another 2,800 meters at a cost of RM80 million can accommodate two airbus A330 and a Fokker 50 simultaneously. It could handle 800,000 passengers annually.
Speaking to reporters later, Chan said the new terminal would spur the tourism industry in the state.
He said the terminal is expected to receive 400,000 passengers during the first year operations.
Mahdzir said a task force was formed recently to attend to the needs of the airlines using the terminal.
He added AirAsia planned to increase flight frequency from 10 to 17 a week to Alor Star by the end of this month and he hoped it would also fly pilgrims to Mecca.

Malaysia is investing significantly in establishing new tertiary education facilities to meet the nations needs for the 21st Century.
The Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology is a new purpose built university catering for six thousand students. Gillespies worked with the architects to prepare a masterplan for a campus style university where parkland would be used to provide a strong image and a beautiful environment in which students live and study.
The university occupies a ninety hectare site with wooded hills to the north providing an attractive backdrop. A stately boulevard links the main road with the university core and provides a serene drive past new lakes, sports fields, lawns and a mosque.

The circle formation of the overall Masterplan is a clear and strong image signifying knowledge held in the greater circle of life. A crescent moon-kite form of the 'wau' sits balanced in the circle resulting in a harmonious whole. The circle is a universal form, transcending all Malaysian races and religion and unifying them to a whole.
Positioning the three faculties and the Great Hall and library complex around a central radial core reinforces the concept while creating a strong beginning to develop a "sense of place" that will be important in guiding the architectural development of the university.
The heart of the circle is the academic core with five radial fingers representing the 3 faculties and the Great Hall complex. The circle as a unifying form signifies education within the global context.
Crossing through the lakes, the initial focus will be the Great Hall and administrative complex, which will stand majestically at the entrance of the campus. This central core is to facilitate student interaction between faculties, the cross fertilization of ideas and instantly creating a strong identity for the campus. The Great Hall is connected by a ring of walkways, connecting students within the campus to the other facilities. To the north of the Great Hall sits the Multimedia Library and Student Centre. Flanking to the right and left of the Multimedia Complex is the Medical Faculty and the Engineering + IT Faculty.
The campus planning is first and foremost oriented towards pedestrians, with walking and cycling as the predominant forms of movement on campus. The centralised Academic and Administrative core facilitates this. In addition, all faculties are within a 10 minute (800m) walking diameter. The student residencies are within a 15 minute (1000m) walking diameter from the Academic Core. Automobile access is located on the outer ring of the Academic Core to minimize automobile intrusion, and disability access will be provided throughout the campus.

ALOR STAR: Plans are in the pipeline to turn Kuala Kedah into a bustling waterfront city within 10 years.
Mentri Besar Datuk Mahdzir Khalid (pic) said the master plan for the proposed project was almost completed and work would begin this year.
Insisting that there should be no high-rise buildings at the waterfront, Mahdzir said hotels, commercial complexes, a first-class ferry terminal, and a promenade would be part of Kuala Kedah’s new landscape.
“The fishermen will not be left out of the redevelopment plan. We want to redevelop the entire enclave to make it look more presentable,” he said, adding that the commercial complexes would be built on reclaimed land.
He said this after opening the 27th annual general meeting of the Kuala Kedah Fishermens Association at Wisma Nelayan in Kuala Kedah yesterday.
Mahdzir said the projects would be carried out jointly by the Kedah and Federal Govern-ments as well as the private sector.
He said the state had asked the Federal Government to grant Kuala Kedah barter trade port status.
“There is great potential in barter trading now that there is a ceasefire in Aceh. We can carry out barter trading with Aceh in Indonesia, and Myanmar,” he said
He added that the state had requested that the Transport Ministry surrender the Kuala Kedah Marina to the state.
“We do not want the marina to be abandoned. We have included the (yet to be operational) marina in the master plan,” he said.
He said a fisheries port would also be created with proper parking bays for fish- ing boats and perahu (small boats)
“Fishermen can still stay at their existing homes. We are not going to relocate them. Our aim is to restructure this enclave in a more systematic manner so that it appears more organised,” he said.
He also said that lorry loading and unloading sites were not included in the master plan.
On the proposed new ferry terminal for ‘first class’ passengers, Mahdzir said discussions were underway with ferry operators to provide first, second and economy class services for passenger travelling to and from Langkawi.
“For the first class service, the boat ride might cost RM40 one way for each person,” he said, adding that the current RM18 per trip rate would still be offered to passengers taking the ‘economy class’ boats.

Intel opens RM152mil centre
KULIM: Chipmaker Intel Corp opened its RM152mil Kulim Design and Development Centre in Kedah last Thursday.
The centre will be used in the design of microprocessors, chipsets, motherboards, server boards and customer-application microchips.
This will complement Intel’s current assembly/test and board operations here.
Containing 192,987sq ft of labs — about the area of two football fields — the centre is intended to employ 900 people, bringing Intel’s total number of employees in this town to more than 3,000.
“This Design and Development Centre, along with Intel’s continued work with the Malaysian Government to drive manufacturing and engineering activities, will strengthen the country’s economic competitiveness globally,” said Intel Corp president and chief executive officer Paul Otellini.
“The opening of the centre reflects the fact that Malaysia’s talented workforce has become increasingly integral to Intel,” he added.
Otellini flew in from the United States for the opening ceremony.
K.C. Yoon, managing director of assembly and test at Intel Malaysia, said the site, which initially supported just assembly, test and packaging activities, has dramatically increased its engineering focus over the last 10 years.”
The opening of the centre marks Intel’s 10th anniversary in Kulim and is the latest in a series of investments in Malaysia by the chipmaker, which now amounts to RM10.9mil in total.
Intel also announced an employee volunteer programme to support the local communities it serves across the country.
The Volunteer Matching Grant Programme (VMGP) encourages Intel employees to do volunteer work in the local schools.

PLANS are in the pipeline to revive the Langkawi Book Village which has languished from inactivity and lack of visitors.
Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, who chaired the Kedah Develop-ment Authority (PKNK) meeting recently, has directed the agency to study the viability of reviving the project, locat- ed amid a lush rainforest in Lubuk Semilang on the island resort.
PKNK board member Senator Tajulurus Mohd Zain said Mahdzir wanted the project to become a tourist attraction in Langkawi.
“We are mulling over the idea of getting the private sector to revive the project as it will require a lot of funds,” he said in Sungai Petani.
The book village, mooted by former Mentri Besar Tan Sri Sanusi Junid and built in the style of a traditional Malay kampung, is home to a collection of new and old local as well as international books and magazines.
Tajulurus, who is also Merbok Umno division deputy chief, said when Sanusi mooted the idea years ago, he had the foreign tourist niche market in mind.
“Tourists, especially those who dock their yachts at the marina, are known to collect books to read while they are on holiday. The idea of the book villageis to provide a place for bookworms to converge and enjoy.
“However, the noble idea was met with scepticism by local authorities and many of the proposed cultural events to lure tourists just fizzled off.
“What we (PKNK) can do is to try to breathe some life into the book village by increasing the collection of books there as well as improving the faci-lities and introducing relat- ed activities and cultural extravaganzas for tourists,” he added.
The Langkawi Book Village, which is fashioned after England’s Hay-on-Wye Book Village where books are sold for as cheap as RM5, is the 18th book village in the world and the first in South-East Asia.

ALOR STAR: Kedah will ensure that projects under the Ninth Malaysia Plan will take off by early next year.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the state could achieve this by approving the projects fast.
“We want the projects to start soon to bring benefits to Kedahans fast,” he told newsmen after chairing the state exco meeting yesterday.
He was commenting on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s an-nouncement on the allocation of RM15bil for 880 projects under the 9MP.
He said he had yet to check on the projects in Kedah that would be included in the allocation. It is learnt that out of the 880 projects, 20 were in Kedah.
Among them are a new road to connect Bukit Kayu Hitam and Padang Besar in Perlis, a housing project in Langkawi, upgrading of Lunas-Kulim road and the new Pendang Hospi- tal.
Others are Kota Star orphanage home, Alor Star Econo- mic Centre, Kuala Muda dis-trict office Merbok branch and Northern Region Road and Transport Department Aca-demy in Langkawi.

ALOR STAR: A traditional Kedah village will be built near Gunung Keriang here to showcase the lifestyle and culture of Kedah padi farmers.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the village would complement the Padi Museum, which was located some 50 metres from the village area.
“The location is strategic since it is near the Padi Museum and padi field,” he told newsmen after inspecting the project site recently.
He said the traditional village on 12.1ha site would, among other things, showcase old Malay houses, rice mill and old Chinese coffee shop.
“The traditional village will display farming tools and household furniture of the 1960s,” he said.
He said the state Economic Planning Unit had bought 20 traditional Kedah houses made without nails from several districts in Kedah to be displayed at the traditional village.
He said a man-made river would also be built in the village to show how farmers in the old days relied on river water for cleaning and cooking.
Mahdzir said the traditional village was aimed at promoting the state's culture and heritage, adding that tourists wanting to experience the traditional Malay lifestyle could stay there.
“The rice mill building would be used as an auditorium to promote Kedah culture to tourists while the coffee shop would be used as the registration centre,” he said.
Mahdzir said the village would be built in two phases, with construction work on phase one costing RM7mil to begin in October.
Phase one, comprising the traditional houses, a rice mill and a coffee shop on a 4ha site, is expected to be completed in 2008.

SUNGAI PETANI: Shooting star buffs will be thrilled to know that Malaysia will soon have its very own “Meteor Factor Centre” at the proposed water theme park at Cinta Sayang Golf and Country Resort here.
Jejak Juta Sdn Bhd executive chairman Datuk Jaafar Jamaludin said his proposal to set up the RM5mil meteorite centre has been accepted by the resort.
“Jejak Juta has commissioned foreign experts to design lighting in the dome-shaped building and special effects, which will add realism to the space adventure,” he told The Star, adding that the centre should be ready by late next year.
Jaafar said the centre’s concept would go beyond the simple display of exhibits seen in a conventional museum setting.
“It’ll provide an exciting adventure land in which visitors will be able to get up close with meteorites. There will also be a resource centre on the solar system,” he said.

The RM20 million Carnivall Water and Land of Excitement theme park, the only water park in Kedah, aims to make tourism an income-generating sector for the state when its doors open for business by November.
The theme park, which sits on a seven-hectare site and is part of the Cinta Sayang Golf and Country Resort in Sungai Petani, is being developed by Eupe Corporation Bhd.
The park is designed by White-water West Industries Ltd from Vancouver, Canada, which is also behind the construction of several major theme parks in China, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Cinta Sayang executive director Yeong Chee Fun said the park is positioning itself to be a leisure and entertainment hub of the northern region.
She said the resort is working closely with the state government to organise tourism-related activities in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2007 and Visit Kedah 2008.
She said the park will complement existing activities at the resort, which include archery, horse-riding, paintball, and sports and gymnasium facilities.
Yeong expressed confidence that they have a winner on their hands and are targeting to attract families from Penang and Perlis as the only other theme park in the region is in Bukit Merah, Perak.
“Generally, Penangites are quite short of time, so we capitalised on that factor to create a place where every family member can enjoy themselves, which is much closer to home and where travelling time is cut down.
“We also want to make the resort and theme park an avenue for the families of corporate figures to attend meetings and relax,” she said.
Yeong also said plans are in the pipeline to cash in on the huge potential of the East Asian market that is on the lookout for affordable vacation destinations.
“Right now, we are targeting Japanese and Korean parents, whose children have winter holidays and are eager to escape the bitter cold of the winter season in their home countries.
“Furthermore, the Japanese and Koreans love to play golf and as such, it will be a win-win situation where while parents head to the driving range, the children can enjoy themselves at the theme park.
“Our overall objective is for the resort and theme park to be a one-stop centre for family fun, catering to the needs of the busy corporate figure as well as family members with all facilities under one roof."

Saturday September 9, 2006

THE Kedah Government is lobbying for a bridge and a coastal road to complement the northern corridor development project.
Mentri Besar Datuk Mahdzir Khalid said the bridge was needed to link Pan-tai Merdeka and Tanjung Dawai.
“The coastal road will stretch from Teluk Air Tawar in Seberang Prai to Kuala Sanglang in Perlis,” he said.
“The spillover benefits of the northern corridor project will be felt far and wide if the road and bridge construction projects could be implemented faster,” he told newsmen after opening the Jerlun Umno delegates’ conference yesterday.
Mahdzir said the proposed RM100mil coastal road was crucial for the state, as it would help “complete” a major road network in the state.
“The proposed coastal road with the hinterland road will be running parallel to the North-South Expressway.
“With connecting routes linking the coastal stretch, expressway and the hinterland road, we will have an ex-tensive road network that will augur well for the growth of Kedah,” he said.
Mahdzir said the state had appealed to the Federal Government to approve the two projects.
“It is up to the Prime Minister and the Works Ministry to decide if the projects can be carried out immediately using special grants,” said Mahdzir, adding that it would take about three years to construct the coastal road.

ALOR STAR: The Kedah Government plans to take over Plaza Tunku Yaacob Complex at Lebuhraya Darulaman here which has been abandoned for over 20 years.
Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the complex located next to the Alor Star Tower had become a haunt for drug addicts.
Speaking to newsmen after chairing the state exco meeting yesterday, Mahdzir said the state planned to construct a public building on the 5.7ha site.
The State Legal Advisor, he said, was looking at how the state could acquire the land, adding that a case related to the complex was pending in court.
Mahdzir also said that the state executive council meeting yesterday also agreed to gazette 2,670ha of land as Mada (Muda Agriculture Development Authority Area) area.
He said this would enable 2,001 farmers to use water from the Mada irrigation canal.
?For 35 years the farmers could not use water from the Mada canal although their plots were located along the canal,? he said.
The affected areas are in Kubang Pasu, Kota Star, Pendang and Yan districts, he added.
There are 30,000ha of padi land outside the Mada area still depending on rain and the Drainage and Irrigation Department canal.
On another matter, Mahdzir said the state Security Working Committee and the State Religious Deparment were monitoring two locations suspected of being used by certain parties to revive the Al-Arqam sect.
He named the two locations - Pulau Pisang in Kubang Pasu and a village in Merbok.
?So far we have found that their activities are not a threat to others,? Mahdzir said.

?The state also wants rescue teams to be on standby at the Kuala Kedah and Kuah jetties to respond quickly when there is an emergency,? he said.
Three-year-old Mohd Danial Ramli died and more than 30 others were injured when two ferries collided on Nov 24.

Meanwhile, Bandar Perdana in Sungai Petani, Kedah, with a GDV of RM1.22 billion, will see 7,400 properties built on 1,046 acres completed in 2016. So far, 658 properties comprising 429 double-storey terrace houses, 168 single-storey terrace houses and 61 shop-offices with a GDV of RM71 million have been completed.
Aside from its sheer size, Bandar Perdana, which was launched in April 1997 also stands out as it will reap the benefits of being part of the Muda Valley growth triangle. Comprising Sungai Petani and Kulim in Kedah and Butterworth in Penang, this area, which is currently one of the country’s most vibrant growth centres is set to become the north’s Klang Valley in the next decade. “This year, we expect to record sales of over RM150 million. The growth is in line with our new launches in Bandar Puteri Jaya (in Sungai Petani, Kedah) and Seremban 3 (in Negeri Sembilan),” Tan said.
In addition, OSKPH is expected to introduce new developments in Country Heights and Damansara-Sungai Buloh, both in Selangor, in the middle of this year. The expansion will ensure continuity of development and diversification of sources of income.
“Our on-going projects are Bandar Puteri Jaya on 2,581 acres of freehold land,” said Teong, adding that “we have sold 4,133 units worth RM420 million here since 1999.
“To date, about 2,400 houses in two phases have been occupied and the development has a population of 12,000.”
According to him, secondary sale prices have increased between eight and 10 per cent for landed residences and between 15 per cent and 20 per cent for shophouses, with “the two-storey intermediate shophouses which were priced from RM258,000 now having a secondary value of RM328,000”.
The third phase, known as Bandar Hill Park, is planned to contain 9,322 units worth RM1.5 billion when completed in 10 years’ time. The first two sub-phases of this portion comprising 558 units with a combined Gross Development Value of RM59.25 million were launched last December.
OSKPH plans to make a full range of freehold landed residential properties available to house buyers this year, from single- and double-storey terraces to semi-detached units.
“The residential properties in Bandar Puteri Jaya are usually completed and delivered ahead of schedule. There are also a limited number of houses with Certificates of Fitness for Occupation issued, for those who want to move in right away. Sometime in the near future, we will also unveil a bungalow precinct there,” Tan revealed.
“For investors as well as business operators, we have two new blocks of two- and three-storey shop-offices in Puteri Town Square, which is planned for release in the next few weeks.”
The company is also looking for smart partnerships for its commercial business parks and institutional developments such as private colleges, a medical centre, corporate parks and small- and medium-scale industries in the third phase.

alrite.....a capital, or to be more correctly, an administrative centre of a government is not determined by the GDP or area of the city. I can't denied that most of the capitals in the world are being selected as "capital" due to their highest GDP in that country or administrative teritories. however, not all the cities are chosen as a capital due to its highest GDP or what-so-ever. Some notable examples, Washington DC vs New York, Canberra vs Melbourne and Sydney, Beijing vs Shanghai and HK etc. So, I am tried to say that the city is chosen as a capital not only because of the size of the city nor the GDP of city. Many factors have been considered to make the city as a administrative capital.
I am not tried to deny that SP growth is higher that AS due to the high demand of housing from Penangite, but higher growth doesnt mean that the state capital should shift to SP. Capital shifting requires huge amount of money especially Kedah government budget is very tight.

Capital shifting requires huge amount of money especially Kedah government budget is very tight.
hmmm...i am wondering that macam mana ni you boleh tahu that alor star is smaller that SP? and isnt that SP also dikelilingi oleh kebun getah and kampung as well?
yo...just my 2 cents worth, no offense here.
Of course i know, i live in Kedah quite a long a time.(i'm not trying to be berlagak). A lot of Kedahans will choose to live in Sungai Petani or Kulim becoz its higher opportunity to get some good job.
SP pernah dikelilingi oleh kebun getah and kampung. but now, its hard to to find the kebun getah and the only kampung that nearest to the city of Sg. Petani is Kg. Baru. just like in KL.
about the capital thing.. ok i'm understood..... i can accept that...
ethan December 17th, 2006, 10:23 PM AS is not that bad. Yes, SP got malls and Tesco, but AS also got malls and Giant already opened and TESCO is coming next year. SP is more develop than AS. But like johnsonooi said, SP is more grooms to be a commercial city due to its close distant to Penang & Kulim.
AS meanwhile is perfect for Capital City since State Gov, The Royals and main airport is there. So, AS & SP compliment each other!

Thank You for your comment....:) I heard, Giant will open in SP too. but i'm not sure about that. Go SP and AS go!!!!:applause: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
johnsonooi December 18th, 2006, 02:46 AM Ah ha... This is a good point of view.
The state government try not to concentrate all the development in AS because it wants all the Kedahans to be benefited from development. Thus we have Kedah Maju 2020 where each district and city has different role repectively to contribute to the state economy.
Due to the promising factors like location and high demands as well as low land price, SP is chosen as secondary financial and commercial centre and Kulim is responsible for the supply of high tech industry to support the butterworth port.
Since Yan is the smallest district, it is chosen to supply the electricity to whole Kedah. A foreign owned Oil Refinery site will be located at the district too to boost the job opportunities for the central region of Kedah.
Baling, Sik and Bandar Bahru will be focusing on agriculture and tourism. Baling got hot spring, Sik got Wild Animal Safari and Bandar Bahru is where we can find a lots of oil palm estate. If I am not mistaken, Durian Burung will be the second checkout station after Bukit Kayu Hitam, with the aim to boost the east region of Kedah. A state road linking these three states will be built to boost the economy of these region, if I am not mistaken, from Kubang Pasu, pass through Baling, Sik and Bandar Bahru.
Pendang will also focus on agricultural activities. IMHO and speculation, Pendang and Kubang Pasu will be the secondary suburbs of the Alor Star in case the population of Alor Star increasing. A newly open interchange of North-South Expressway at Pendang serves as a new way of transportation of commodies and goods from Pendang to whole Peninsula.
Jitra, capital of Kubang Pasu, will be focus as secondary city for Northern Region. It serves as a check point for those who travel from Bukit Kayu Hitam. Changlun, where UUM situated, will be served as education centre for Northern Region. Bukit Kayu Hitam, the border town, where Asean Composite Industry centre and Kota Perdana situated, will focus in industry development. A joint-venture factory by Boeing and local supplier is situated at this town and supply the accessories for Boeing.
Padang Terap will concentrate on agricultural development. In Padang Terap, there are lots of sugar cane plantation and tabacco estate.
Due to international exposure of Langkawi, thanks to Tun Mahathir, Langkawi will furthur its journey as a tourism paradise for foreigners as well as Malaysians. Recently, Langkawi just declared by UN as the World Geological Park due to its rich and variety of the geology system, which can be traced back to 1 million years ago.
Now, back to Alor Star. Since it is the royal seat for Kedah for more than 2 centuries, it will be remained as capital. State major admistrative activities and commercial activities will concentrate in Alor Star. Airport, which is recently upgraded, will be serve as major aviation hub for Northern Region of Malaysia. A new train station will be built next to airport to increase the frequency of the railway usage. A new railway connection, from Alor Star to Kuala Kedah, is under planning stage. State government is also try to expand the capital and increase the places of interest to retain the image of Alor Star. New facilities such as Paddy Museum, New High Court, New General Hospital, New sport centre and so-on are built to meet the demands.
People felt that Alor Star is so small and empty when they travel to Alor Star, compare to SP. In fact, technically speaking, Alor Star is larger than SP. From Kota Sarang Semut to Kepala Batas and from Kuala Kedah to Pokok Sena, is under the jurisdiction of Alor Star City Council. But people usually prefer to go to the city centre and this results that they felt that AS is smaller than SP.:)
AS is not that bad. Yes, SP got malls and Tesco, but AS also got malls and Giant already opened and TESCO is coming next year. SP is more develop than AS. But like johnsonooi said, SP is more grooms to be a commercial city due to its close distant to Penang & Kulim.

Oriental Interest Bhd (OIB), which sees a challenging year for the property market, is taking steps to mitigate it by focussing on housing projects in high-growth areas.
Its executive director Koay Leong Eng said the company would focus on housing projects in “high-growth areas such as Kulim, Sungai Petani and the fringes of Sepang”.
These measures would enable the company to remain profitable in the financial year ending June 30, 2007, he told FinancialDaily after its AGM in Penang on Nov 17.
In FY06, it posted a net profit of RM24 million compared with RM29.47 million in FY05.
“We are confident our property development division will remain profitable by focussing housing development projects on high-growth areas such as Kulim, Sungai Petani and the fringes of Sepang,” he said.
OIB was evaluating several plans to enlarge their land bank but the current land bank of 800 hectares was sufficient for the next five to 10 years.
On the manufacturing operations, Koay said they would emphasise on value-added rubberwood products including mouldings, lamination, drawer fronts, furniture parts, cabinet doors and solid doors.
“To date, we have spent about RM11.79 million for our manufacturing division in FY05-06 to expand the factory and upgrade manufacturing equipment,” he said.
Koay added OIB exported 92% of its rubberwood products to the US, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and Japan. However, the exports have been affected by the recent strengthening of the ringgit against the US dollar.

KULIM High- Tech Park (KHTP) mencatat sejarah apabila menerima kemasukan pelaburan terbesar dalam tempoh tiga bulan pertama tahun ini dengan pelaburan tambahan berjumlah RM1 bilion dari syarikat gergasi elektronik, Fuji Electric (M) Sdn Bhd. (Fuji Electric).

COVER STORY: Bujang’s ‘living’ museum
It’s like walking in the footsteps of our forefathers. ALAN TEH LEAM SENG takes a reverent stroll through an ancient valley where relocated stupas and other artifacts dot the landscape
THE fluttering sails of a gigantic Indian dhow slowly appeared over the horizon, to be greeted with shouts of excitements by the villagers. History was in the making as the first travel-weary foreigners walked down the gangplank carrying armfuls of perfume, myrrh and ivory. Captivated by the imposing mountain and safe harbour, many of them decided to stay on and call Bujang Valley home.
Through time, this tiny islet at the mouth of the Merbok River began to flourish and everyone prospered. Sprawling temple complexes covered the land and the tiny harbour at Bujang was transformed overnight into a bustling entreport where produce from the four corners of the world passed through the rough hands of porters.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m73/sheikhfaisol/lembahbujang.jpg
Fast forward two thousand years to the present: Visitors to the small laidback town of Merbok in Kedah would not think much of this one-street settlement.
But don’t judge the book by its cover. There are still many things to see and do here despite it having slipped into oblivion and losing its lustre.
Entering one of the country’s few open-air museums is like taking a walk back through time. Relocated stupas and other weather resistant artifacts dot the landscape of an expansive hillock the size of five football fields.
The museum building at the foot boasts of foot-high granite statues from the Hindu-Buddhist civilisation, considered the earliest in Malaysia. Intricately carved, they appear to come alive and dance in the dimly-lit cabinets.
Excavation efforts since the early 19th Century has unearthed a wealth of artifacts, resulting in the building of the internationally-renowned Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum about 20 years ago.
Actually, attempts to save the valley from the ravages of time started some 70 years ago under the watchful eye of Dr H.G. Quartich Wales, a prominent archaeologist who later realised that these ancient structures were exact copies of South Indian places of worship. Stupas of varying shapes and sizes have been found scattered throughout Bujang Valley which spans two northern states of Malaysia.
One century earlier, Lt Col. James Low, the Resident of Penang, discovered a three-metre high rock bearing Pali inscriptions at the foothills of Kampung Cherok Tok Kun, close to the old St Anne’s Church in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
Such discoveries led researchers to believe that a thousand years ago, much of Province Wellesley was covered by sea and Bukit Mertajam, like Gunung Jerai, would have prominently stood out as a landmark to ancient sailors. Confirming the northern boundary of this ancient civilisation, Wales found a small Buddhist stupa in Bukit Choras, Kedah.
Consistent with other finds, Gunung Jerai Temple was mainly constructed from bricks and granite blocks. Taking advantage of the mountain’s commanding height, the people built stone pyres to provide signal fires to guide ancient mariners plying the Straits of Malacca on their way to ports in Sumatra, Borneo and even China.
One eye-catching structure on the museum grounds is the Pengkalan Bujang Temple. Originally from a village located on the eastern bank of the Bujang River bearing the same name, it has an eight-sided Buddhist stupa and contained a terracotta Buddha statue, gold rings, iron nails and glass beads when unearthed.
Later Bujang Valley lost its prominence when Malacca became the region’s premier port. Archaeologists and historians believe that the spread of Islam from Malacca also contributed significantly to its rapid decline.
Walking through the many exhibits does give one a vivid insight into the life and times of the ancient people who once lived and prospered in this safe haven.
Things To Do
The best time to visit is definitely in the early morning. Listening to chirping birds just as the morning mist is clearing is most soothing. I thoroughly enjoyed the cool morning breeze while marvelling at the magnificent view of Gunung Jerai in the background. I just couldn’t help but think about what life was like 2,000 years ago.
After this visit, I feel inclined to bring all my friends to this wonderful place which is open daily from 9am to 5pm except during Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji. Furthermore, another plus point is that for large families, admission is free.
Learning about the past is easy. Each exhibit is carefully and appropriately displayed with well-written information in simple language.
A forest trail that links the museum to the summit of Gunung Jerai will take those adventurous enough through a truly scenic and rewarding journey. This walk, estimated to take up to five hours, will take trekkers along the many forest trails leading to the peak such as the Tapah Forest Reserve Trail, Singkir Forest Reserve Trail before terminating at the Broadcasting Station.
Along the way, do stop awhile to enjoy the commanding views of the Bujang Valley and Kedah Plain. On a clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of the islands off the Kedah coast.
Tourists intending to make this trip are required to register themselves at the museum and hire a guide. While you are there, keep an eye out for the remnants of the trenches made by the British soldiers in their futile effort to stop the advance of the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.
Take a dip in the cool and refreshing Merbok Waterfall. Bring along a picnic basket and swimming trunks and you will certainly have a whale of a time.
After having your fill of the history lesson at the museum and relaxing dip at the waterfall, go back to Merbok town and take a walk back through time. Many shops look exactly like they did 30 years ago. Smile at the locals and you will surely get a very sincere one back!
What To Buy
From Merbok, a short 15-minute drive brings you to the coastal town of Tanjong Dawai, famous for dried seafood. Tourists from all over the country cart home anchovies, dried squid, salted fish and belacan.
Head for Arked Tanjong Dawai, managed by the Sungai Petani Municipal Council, where you can browse through over 30 shoplots. Bargaining is allowed but remember that it pays to be polite. Check out Kedai Borong Sakan at Lot 30 (top floor). Proprietor, Zulkifli is accommodating and has quite a good selection of goods. Next door, visitors can buy salted terubok from Sarawak.
Nearby is the jetty where tourists can catch a five-minute ferry ride (RM1.50) to Pantai Merdeka, another tourist destination.
Where To Eat
The road leading to Tanjong Dawai is dotted with restaurants offering delicious seafood at reasonable prices. Don’t expect much in terms of decor but the full view of the sea and invigorating sea breeze make up for everything. Most open in the evenings and reservations are not required.

skyscraperboy January 21st, 2007, 11:07 AM Transforming into an industrial economy
KEDAH, the rice bowl of Malaysia, is fast growing from an agriculture-based economy to an industrial economy.
It has started attracting foreign direct investment by the billions.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said that Kedah can expect at least RM4bil in foreign direct investment (FDI) this year.
Kedah is enjoying a sound macro economic environment with Gross Domestic Produce (GDP) growth exceeding 6%, increasing FDI and robust growth in industrial production specifically in hi-tech, biotech and manufacturing sectors.
More than 460 manufacturing companies have set up operations in 25 industrial parks in Alor Star, Jitra, Bukit Kayu Hitam, Sungai Petani, Tikam Batu, Kuala Ketil and Kulim.
Gurun, Sungai Petani is poised to be the automotive city in the northern region with the existence of the NAZA automotive manufacturing plant. Gurun also houses Petronas Fertilizer, Perwaja Steel and MODENAS Manufacturing.
Kulim Hi-Tech City, dubbed the Science City of the Future, is a self-contained township housing 35 multinational and local high-technology companies including Intel, Sony, Celestica, Sumitomo, Silterra, Fuji Electric and Infineon.
The RM21bil hi-tech park that boasts high quality infrastructure and facilities is poised to be the national centre for advanced technology manufacturing, ICT, nanotechnology and biotechnology.
Mahdzir said Kedah offers enormous business opportunities ranging from hi-tech, bio-tech, research and development, power generation, healthcare, petroleum refining, education to agricultural product manufacturing.
InvestKedah is promoting itself as the ultimate profit centre.
Kedah is also tapping its potential in the tourism industry.
The world-renowned island Langkawi is part of Kedah.
Kedah is now aggressively promoting potential attractions on mainland Kedah with the catchy tagline ‘Mainland Kedah - More to discover’.
Among the better-known attractions on mainland Kedah are Tree Top Walk in Sedim, Lembah Bujang Archaeological Museum, Sungai Merbok, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s birth place in Alor Star and the Padi Museum at the foot of Gunung Keriang.

Kedah will transform potential tourism areas into state parks, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.
He said the state government would set up a state park corporation to monitor and maintain the parks.
The corporation would identify potential tourism areas for the state parks, he said.
He said Ulu Muda, Pedu dam, Gunung Jerai, Sungai Merbok and several islands in Lang- kawi were among the areas with tourism potential identified so far for transformation into state parks.
“We will adopt the model for the state parks from other states,” he told newsmen after chairing the state exco meeting yesterday.
He said Kedah would gazette the identified areas as state parks next year.
On another issue, Mahdzir said RM48.4mil in allocation to maintain 10 industrial estates in Kedah had been approved.
He said RM10mil was for Kulim High-Tech Park while RM38.4mil was for nine other in-dustrial estates located in Kubang Pasu, Kota Star, Kuala Muda and Kulim districts.
“The allocation is for three years’ maintenance work.
“We will start with building and repairing roads, fixing road signs, lamp posts and food courts,” he said.

The two UK companies are planning shared production facility.
16 March 2007 – Two UK-based companies with separate manufacturing plants in Malaysia are creating an informal alliance that will see them establish a joint production facility from an investment of up to £5.5m.
Counting, measurement and timing instruments manufacturer Trumeter is a customer for injection mouldings from the British-run but Asian focused processor Avantis International. Now the two companies are establishing a joint operation in Sungai Petani, adjacent to the existing, fully automated Avantis production facility that employs 145 and has injection moulding machine capacity up to 600t.
The new 50,000 sq foot factory will primarily be a design, manufacturing and assembly plant based around injection moulding. It will be operational before the end of the year.
Avantis has been producing parts and doing some assembly work for Trumeter for more than three years. Most of the products, said Trumeter chairman Peter Weidenbaum, are housings for the range of electronic products produced at its plant in Penang.
Establishing the joint operation will create capacity for Avantis at its existing plant that CEO Mark Bromley intends to use to specialise in the production of PVC mouldings for the construction industry.
Bromley told PRW that Avantis had a turnover close to £3m in 2006. An estimated 30-40% of output is exported to the UK, the remainder going to customers in Europe, the Middle East and Australia.
brain_failure March 17th, 2007, 10:31 AM Tesco buka 4 lagi hypermarket

By TUNKU SHAHARIAH
THE Sungai Petani Municipal Council is negotiating with several established businesses to breathe new life into the RM4mil Arked Niaga Pekan Rabu complex.
Council public relations officer Zubaidah Hanoom Mohd Yusof said the among the businesses approached were an interior decoration and carpet business, an established food chain and a bookstore.
She said they would draw shoppers to the complex that has remained idle since it was built in 2004.
She said traders who took up shop lots and kiosks at the complex said the complex was not in a strategic location.
They complained of slow business and later ceased doing business at the complex.
She also said the traders had also complained that the council had not done enough to promote the complex.
“The traders were unable to pay the rental for their shop lots of between RM200 and RM360 per month as they claimed business was slow back then,” she said in an interview.
The three-storey Arked Niaga Pekan Rabu was opened on Aug 31, 2004, by former council president Datuk Abdul Rahman Ahmad.
Of the 54 shop lots and 15 kiosks, only three have been taken up since the opening but only one business – a carpet shop – remains.
Carpet trader Abdul Ali Masud Ahmad, 59, said so far he has no trouble with his business as the complex had ample parking space for his regular customers.

LANGKAWI is in dire need of a sea ambulance to provide quick medical response to tourists during emergencies.
Langkawi district officer Mansor Ismail said patients who needed serious medical attention now had to be sent to Alor Star Hospital since the district hospital in Langkawi did not have enough facilities to treat them.
“It is high time the island got a sea ambulance to cater for local and foreign patients who need immediate medical attention in Alor Star,” he said.
It is learnt ferries ply between Langkawi and Kuala Kedah from 7am to 7pm daily, making a total of only 50 trips on hourly intervals.
Mansor said the sea ambulance could be used at any given hours, especially at night.
He said the district office had applied to the Health Ministry for a sea ambulance after a ferry mishap in November last year.
In the 5.10pm accident on Nov 24, last year, Express Sejahtera 15 ferry carrying 55 passengers and Express Kenangan 6 carrying 153 passengers collided at 14.5 nautical miles from Langkawi.

Village Mall new landmark for Sungai Petani
By TUNKU SHAHARIAH
SUNGAI PETANI: The distinctive three-storey Village Mall in the heart of town is set to change the landscape of Sungai Petani.
To be ready in September, the shopping mall will accommodate two mini anchor tenants and chain retailers such as Secret Recipe, Delifrance, Pizza Hut, The Chicken Rice Shop, Casuri, Eumas and Bread History.
With a total net floor space of 100,000 sq ft, the mall is built near Tesco at Lagenda Heights.
The landmark destination is the brainchild of visionary developer Datuk Low Yau Khee, who is managing director of Nice Saga Development Sdn Bhd.
http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2007/5/2/business/p5-lowi.JPG Datuk Low Yau Khee
Known for his luxury homes at Lagenda Heights, Low said his ideas to change the lifestyle of consumers in Kedah and to uplift their shopping trends were often dismissed as idealistic.
“I’m not a person who only talks. I want to improve the lifestyle of folks here so there is a place where the whole family can converge to shop, eat, enjoy and relax.
“This sort of lifestyle is found only in KL and Penang but not in Kedah. When I first talked about Tesco, nobody believed me when I said we’re ready for such a trend.
“Now the crowd converging daily at Tesco shows that Kedahans are ready to spend if the right market is created for them,” he told StarBiz.
Low said Village Mall, with its villa-like architecture and arches, was fashioned after a mall in Spain. “The Village Mall conceptualises the lifestyle of a lively community,” he added.

skyscraperboy May 5th, 2007, 01:29 PM Fong: Have smart partnerships with training institutes
PUTRAJAYA: Industries should establish smart partnerships with private and government training institutes to create a skilled workforce with greater global competitiveness.
Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn said if employers did not play an active role in developing human capital, any attempt at increasing the number of skilled workers would not be realised.
Noting that many industries faced a shortage of skilled workers, he said employers themselves must be the catalyst for the development of a skilled labour force.
He said that under the smart partnership programme started two years ago, a worker would get between 70% and 80% of his training at the workplace and the remaining 20% to 30% at training centres.
He said the ministry had set up 27 training centres nationwide complete with the modules which satisfied industry requirements.
"About 40,000 workers have been trained annually in various fields at these institutes," Dr Fong said in his message in conjunction with the ministry's Workers Day celebration today.
He said the Government had approved the setting up of four technology training institutes in Jerantut, Kemaman, Bintulu and Taiping.
Another four industrial training institutes in Tanjung Malim, Bukit Tinggi, Marang and Sungai Petani have also been approved, he added.
On the ministry's Electronic Labour Exchange scheme, Dr Fong said that until February this year, 82,425 job-seekers had used it by posting their applications for 53,597 job vacancies.

SUNGAI PETANI: The opening of the second Giant hypermarket in Kedah is expected to spur the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the state.
GCH Retail (M) Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Thomas Herriott said the investment was expected to create huge spin-offs, including creating jobs and business opportunities for Kedahans.
GCH owns Giant hypermarkets.
Located within a minute’s drive from the Sungai Petani South toll plaza, Herriott said the hypermarket was now buying 737 types of products from 76 bumiputra SMEs based in and around Sungai Petani.
“The number of SME suppliers is expected to increase as Giant’s operations in Kedah are projected to grow in tandem with the economic activities under the Ninth Malaysia Plan,” he said at the official opening recently.
He said the hypermarket offered 100,000 items, including a wide range of locally produced food, groceries and general merchandise.
“Apart from private label products, Giant has 1,000 own-brand products, which are at least 40% cheaper than other brands of similar goods.”
The 11,228-sq m hypermarket, with 30 check-out counters and over 500 parking bays, is located about 3km from the Sungai Petani town centre.

KEDAH has repackaged its tourism products and spent millions to spruce up places of interest in preparation for the Visit Kedah Year (VKY 2008).
State Tourism, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Othman Aziz said the state was “fully prepared” to receive the targeted 3.7 million visitors next year.
He said the tourism committee had re-packaged tourism products in Kedah and would work with about 50 travel agents and other players in the industry.
“We have upgraded the infrastructure of our tourism products with special emphasis on Bujang Valley, Sedim River Recreation Park, Gunung Jerai and Pantai Cenang in Langkawi.
“We also want homestay operators to rejuvenate their products by introducing new itinerary in their homestay programmes. The state government will offer some incentives to help them get started,” he told a press conference after launching the Northern Zone 2007 Domestic Sales Mission yesterday that was participated by 138 travel agents and hoteliers including 38 from Thailand.
Othman said among the allocation spent on sprucing up the products were RM5mil on Merbok River, RM7mil on Kampung Tronoh in Ulu Keriang, RM9mil on the Kedah heritage trail near Balai Besar, RM5mil on Dataran Warisan in Alor Star and RM5mil on the refurbishment of Gunung Jerai Resort.

Transpen's US$7 Bln-pipeline To Cut Down Time Taken To Transport Oil
KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Bernama) -- The US$7 billion trans-peninsula pipeline to be laid across northern Malaysia will cut down on the time taken to ship oil from West Asia to East Asia to seven days.
Currently, the time taken to ship the oil to its destinations via the Malacca Straits takes 21 days.
The pipeline that stretches from Yan in Kedah to Bachok in Kelantan will shorten the transit time by avoiding the Straits of Malacca which is said to be the second most critical "chokepoint" during the transit.
"The savings in using our pipeline to the oil producers, to oil traders, is enough to even pay for one month of storage," said chairman of Trans-Peninsula Petroleum Sdn Bhd (Transpen), Mohd Kamil Sulaiman.
Speaking at a press conference here, he said the "timing is perfect" for the project to take off as the oil market has shifted to East Asia, with China now being the second biggest importer of oil.
Transpen is the owner and operator of the project.
It inked an agreement with Ranhill Engineers and Constructors Sdn Bhd and Indonesia's PT Tripatra Engineers and Consultants for the design and construction of the 300-kilometer pipeline, on the sidelines of the Third World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF), here today.
Witnessed by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Indonesian President Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Transpen also inked a separate agreement with Indonesian firm Bakrie and Brothers tbk for the supply of steel pipes and Al-Banader International Group of Saudi Arabia for the supply of oil.
Mohd Kamil said the pipeline would help ease congestion in the Straits of Malacca where out of 60,000 vessels that transit the straits, 30 percent were oil tankers.
He said the pipeline would divert about 20 percent of the oil tankers.
While analysts have voiced skepticism over the viability of the project considering it would only save oil tankers three days of transit time, Mohd
Kamil countered that the assumptions were based on big tankers. It is not the smaller 80,000-ton vessels that Transpen is targeting, said the chairman.
He said 60 percent of oil tankers crossing the straits were smaller vessels as many ports in East Asia cannot accommodate larger crude carriers.
These smaller tankers currently take about 21 days to transit oil from West Asia and Africa, passing through the Malacca Straits and Singapore and northward to China and Japan.
To be constructed in three phases stretching over seven years, the 48-inch diameter pipeline has a carrying capacity of six million barrels per day throughput (bpd) of crude oil.
Initially, Transpen's capacity would be 60 million bpd of storage and two million bpd of throughput.
After four to five years of operation the system capacity would be upgraded to a maximum of 180 million bpd storage and six million bpd throughput.
On both ends of the pipeline, there will be offshore mooring facilities to accommodate deep-draught tankers that require a minimum depth of 25 meters.
Along the pipeline, in Jeli, Kelantan, there will be a major storage which would hold 90 percent of the entire system's capacity.
"Work would begin in 2008 with land acquisitions made in cooperation with the respective state governments. There will be three phases in the construction spanning a period of seven years altogether," he said.
Transpen said once the first phase of the project, costing US$2.3 billion, is completed by mid-2011, the pipeline will begin to generate income.
Mohd Kamil noted that the project would require equity and project financing both from domestic and foreign sources.
Transpen is owned 30 percent by locals and 70 percent by international investors.

US$7b trans-peninsula
pipeline deal sealed

TRANS-Peninsula Petroleum Sdn Bhd (TPP), the developer of a 300km crude oil pipeline across northern Peninsular Malaysia, may sell shares on Bursa Malaysia in 2010 to fund the project, a source familiar with the plan says.
The entire project will cost US$7 billion (RM24 billion), spanning seven years.
The company is expected to finance the first phase, estimated at US$2.3 billion (RM7.8 billion), with equity and borrowings.
TPP also plans to attract the Government to invest in the project.
TPP yesterday signed a master alliance agreement with its partners for the projects: Ranhill Bhd, which will handle the construction work, and Indonesia's PT Tripatra Engineers & Consultants, the project manager.
Ranhill was represented by its president and chief executive Tan Sri Hamdan Mohamed, while TPP was led by its chairman Mohd Kamil Sulaiman. PT Tripatra was represented by its director Pandri Prabono.
The signing was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Indonesian president Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Also represented at the signing were Indonesia's PT Bakrie & Brothers Tbk, which is supplying steel pipes for the project and Al-Banader International Group of Saudi Arabia that will help secure the oil supplies.
Foreign investors, particularly those from the Middle East, are said to be keen to buy stakes in the project.
The company is currently dealing with land acquisition issues with the help of the three state governments involved - Perak, Kedah and Kelantan. Construction is expected to start in the middle of next year.
TPP's Mohd Kamil said the pipelines provides a link between the oil-producing countries in the Middle East and East Asian consumers and will ease the congestion and pollution in the Straits of Malacca.
"Timing of the project is perfect now as the oil market has shifted to East Asia, particularly China," Mohd Kamil said. He said Malaysia is strategically located and the pipelines are poised to play an important role in the pattern of oil distribution and consumption.
The Trans-Peninsula pipelines will traverse Perak, Kedah and Kelantan. On both ends of Yan in Kedah and Bachok in Kelantan, there will be offshore mooring facilities to accommodate deep-draught tankers which require a minimum depth of 25 metres.
There will be day tanks each in Yan and Bachok. Along the pipeline in Jeli, Kelantan, there will be a major storage which will hold 90 per cent of the entire system capacity.

The deals were witnessed by the leaders of Malaysia and Indonesia
The Malaysian company with ambitious plans for a $7bn (£3.5bn) oil pipeline has signed deals with Indonesian and Saudi Arabian partners.
Trans-Peninsula Petroleum plans to build a 193 mile (310km) pipeline across Northern Malaysia.
The pipeline would bypass the Malacca Strait, allowing oil tankers to be loaded with crude away from the busy and often dangerous waterway.
Many similar projects have failed in the past.
Trans-Peninsula Petroleum said that it hoped Monday's deals would help to reassure any sceptics.
"We wouldn't be here today, we wouldn't have the support of the Saudi partners, if this project was not feasible or this project cannot be financed," Trans-Peninsula Petroleum's chairman Rahim Kamil Sulaiman said.
The company's partners are Saudi Arabia's Al-Banader International and the Indonesian steel pipeline maker, PT Bakrie & Brothers.
Notorious passage
The pipeline plans to run across Northern Malaysia, allowing Middle Eastern oil to be refined in Kedah on the north-western coast, piped to Kelantan on the eastern coast, where it would be shipped to Japan, China and South Korea.
Should the project be completed, then it would divert about 30% of the oil currently that goes through the Malacca Strait.
About half of the world's crude oil is shipped through the Malacca Strait.
The busy waterway is notorious for robberies and hijackings, although they have fallen in frequency since Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore increased patrols in 2005.
Trans-Peninsula Petroleum signed up its partners on the sidelines of the World Islamic Economic Forum in Kuala Lumpur.
Earlier in the day, Trans-Peninsula also signed deals with Malaysia's Ranhill Engineers and Constructors and Indonesia's PT Tripatra for the design and construction of the pipeline.

THE RM2.1mil ‘Dataran 0 Km’ project in Sungai Petani is scheduled to be ready next month.
Sungai Petani Municipal Council public relations officer Zubaidah Mohd Yusof said the beautification project involved landscaping and the construction of a 115m fort-like wall along Jalan Ibrahim, near Sun-gai Petani’s old clock tower.
The 4.15m high wall would sup-port a 14.4m high main flag tower and two shorter ones on either side, standing at 11.5m each.
She also said the entire stretch of road in front of Dataran 0 Km, along Jalan Ibrahim from SP Plaza to the old police station, would be pedestrianised in preparation for the coming Merdeka Day celebration.
“The project will be useful for other events such as the 50th Kedah Sultanate anniversary celebration, Visit Kedah Year 2008 and Visit Malaysia Year 2007.
“There is also a proposal for a Merdeka Day parade to be held to commemorate the project’s completion,” she added.
The project to beautify the town has been well received by the townsfolk.
Retiree A. Rajendran, 64, from Taman Ria here said it was high time that Sungai Petani underwent some changes as it was among the most rapidly developed town in Kedah.
“It’s good to see Sungai Petani moving in tandem with the country’s progress. There is no better way to welcome the country’s 50th independence than a facelift,” he noted.
Coffee shop owner Lee Hock Chye, 53, said the new look would make more visitors stop over at the town, which was usually bypassed by those commuting from Perak and Penang to Kedah.

THE new fully air-conditioned market in Bandar Laguna Merbok, Sungai Petani, will be operational next month.
The RM1.4 million market, which is based on the Japanese concept, was built by the Sungai Petani Municipal Council (MPSPK).
MPSPK public relations officer Zubaidah Hanoom Mohd Yusof said the market, which is aptly named Modern Market, would house a bakery, grocery and fruit stalls.
She said the market would be hygienic as the stalls only sell cleaned and pre-packed vegetables, meat and seafood.
“Consumers can still enjoy fresh items. The only thing is that the supplies will be pre-packed elsewhere before taken to the modern market.
“The market will be dry and odourless unlike the traditional wet markets which are usually smelly and dirty,” she said.
Zubaidah said a space would also be allo-cated for the public to rent and market their products.
Barber M. Jayapragasam, 48, said the market would be convenient for Bandar Laguna Merbok residents.
“The market is ideally located but I hope the prices will be competitive,” said Jayapragasam.
University student S. Muniandy, 26, said the MPSPK should have done a study on the current shopping trend before building the market.
“The current trend of shopping is at hypermarkets and there are already two hyper- markets in Sungai Petani competing with bargains and offers.
“I wonder how this modern market is going to compete and offer cheaper goods to consumers,” asked Muniandy.

ALOR STAR, July 16 (Bernama) -- The Kedah state government is confident that the well planned North Corridor Economic Region (NCER) programme, due for launch end of this month, will bring significant transformation to the state's agricultural, industrial and tourism sectors.
Menteri Besar Kedah Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said that under the NCER, the three sectors have been identified for development in the state.
"Kedah is already developing the three sectors at the moment but with the NCER, a greater push will be given to the sectors which will benefit the people and the state," he told a press conference here Monday to announce the upcoming NCER programme.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is due to launch the NCER plan during his visit to Kedah this July 30.

For the padi sector, the entire areas under the Muda Agricultural Development Authority will be given a boost in terms of infrastructure starting from water reservoirs to the irrigation systems.
Apart from that, small time individual padi harvesting would be transformed to more commercial methods with the concept of padi estates.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is due to launch the NCER plan during his visit to Kedah this July 30.
Sime Darby Bhd will be the lead agency for the implementation of the NCER which will cover the planned development of the four northern states of Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis.
The NCER was marked in the Ninth Malaysia Plan (2006-2010) to promote a fair and balanced economic development for the nation.
Mahdzir said the agriculture sector's development will focus on padi cultivation, livestock and acquaculture.
For the padi sector, the entire areas under the Muda Agricultural Development Authority will be given a boost in terms of infrastructure starting from water reservoirs to the irrigation systems.
Apart from that, small time individual padi harvesting would be transformed to more commercial methods with the concept of padi estates.
In the industrial sector, three existing industrial areas namely Gurun, Sungai Petani and Kulim will continue to be strengthened while downstream industries will be created to further boost the sector's development.
The Menteri Besar said a new industrial park will be also created at the Kulim High Technology Park (KHTP) which currently hosts hundreds of well known companies from all over the world.
He said the new park will provide support to the KHTP.
"In the tourism sector, Langkawi will continue as a main tourism destination and at the same time efforts will be taken to attract tourists to the mainland of Kedah. Lembah Bujang, Ulu Muda and Sedim," he added.

SINTOK: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has set up a Northern Corridor Economic Region Research Centre (NCER-RC) to help develop Kedah.
UUM Chancellor and Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, said the centre would be under the university’s Kedah Develop 2010 Unit.
He said UUM would use its expertise to conduct studies in various fields, including property management, services, tourism and agriculture for the state.
“Focus would be on research to find out how NCER development projects can help Kedahans with low income,” he said in his speech during the university’s 20th Convocation Day here yesterday.
The Sultan said he wanted UUM to conduct research that could used to gauge development projects under NCER.
He said UUM had a total of 1,170 lecturers in various fields, including 120 people in law and international studies.
UUM Vice-Chancellor Tan Sri Dr Nordin Kardi, in his speech, said UUM would maintain its flexibility, liberalism and the ability to change with the times to produce outstanding results.
“UUM has become the first choice among students because we produce graduates with soft skills that are much needed in the working world,” he said.
He said to ensure the university became the first choice university, UUM planned to provide a knowledge environment through research, publishing and consultation.
Dr Nordin also said that UUM would also develop the students’ personalities, and entrepreneurship and leadership skills through innovative and relevant curriculum and co-curriculum.
“I hope the UUM alumni will work with the university to achieve the plan,” he said.

Kedah Economic Planning Unit director Datuk Bashirudin Abdul Jamil said the beautification project would be completed by the end of next year.
“The existing boardwalk at Tanjung Chali will be expanded for recreational purposes,” he said.
He said the Tourism Ministry had provided the allocation to beautify the 8km-long Sungai Kedah and part of the 12km-long Sungai Anak Bukit under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
Bashirudin was speaking to reporters after going on a cruise with Kedah Tourism Action Council general manager Nasir Mustafa, Alor Star City mayor Datuk Abdul Mukthi Abdullah, Public Works Department director Baharunuddin Che Zain and Drainage and Irrigation Department district engineer Mohamad Nazif Daud.
“Pollution along the river can be effectively checked once the proposed State River Administration Board (Luan) Enactment comes into effect next year.
“The bill will be tabled this year and once gazetted, action can be taken against river polluters,” he said.
Bashirudin said the state hoped that Sungai Kedah would regain its past glory as the main transportation hub. In the past, large ‘tong-kangs’ could even ply the river.
“This can also reduce traffic congestion on the main roads, especially during major social events,” he added.
Nasir said the river beautification project would be a boon for the tourism industry as the proposed river cruises would be a hit among Malaysian and foreign tourists.
“The historic Zahir Mosque, Rumah Merdeka, Menara Alor Star, Istana Anak Bukit and the museum are among the magnificent structures people can view during the river cruise,” he said.
He said that to make the river scenery more pleasant, new buildings constructed along the riverbanks should face the waterfront.

The Carnivall ala Bali

skyscraperboy September 12th, 2007, 12:42 PM Plenitude to launch 3 projects
They have GDV of more than RM340mil
PETALING JAYA: Plenitude Bhd expects to launch three projects with a combined gross development value (GDV) of more than RM340mil by the first half next year, said acting chief executive officer Khoo Yek San.
A piece of land in Batu Ferringhi, which is targeted for residential development, has a GDV of some RM120mil while the Lot 88 project in Sungai Petani is worth RM136mil.
“The mainland will see spillover effects from Penang island.
Khoo Yek San
“Sungai Petani, being only 45 minutes away by highway, will also benefit given the competitive and affordable prices,” she told StarBiz in a telephone interview.
The company's Batai project in Damansara Heights would comprise bungalows valued at about RM88mil in total, Khoo said.
On the back of these, earnings for the years ending June 30, 2008 and 2009 were likely to be significantly better, she said.
For the year just ended June 30, Plenitude's pre-tax profit rose 10% to RM82.7mil from RM75.2mil a year earlier while revenue improved 7.7% to RM238.2mil from RM221.1mil. Earnings per share increased to 41.82 sen against 38.81 sen previously.
Part of the improvement was contributed by Taman Puchong Prima in Puchong, which saw higher sales, thanks to it being the only available freehold land in the vicinity, Khoo said.
Plenitude is also the developer of Taman Desa Tebrau and Tebrau City in Johor. Due to their proximity to the Iskandar Development Region, property value has increased substantially.
Khoo said the company intended to leverage on that by turning some of its future developments into high-end residential properties like bungalows instead of terrace houses as initially planned.
She said the opening of an Ikea outlet in Tebrau City by year's end would further boost interest.
“Singapore, Vietnam, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are seeing a boom in their property markets. This will have a spillover effect on Malaysia, with property prices in Johor and Kuala Lumpur to increase soon,” she said.
The cash-rich company also plans to have a more sustainable income, going forward.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m73/sheikhfaisol/Sungai%20Petani/p1-upcomingch.jpg
Khoo said the developer planned to set up a hotel in Taman Desa Tebrau to cater to the growing number of tourists.
“We already own the Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel in Penang, which contributes about 6% of group revenue,” she said.
Plenitude was also looking to expand into Vietnam and Indonesia, Khoo said.
nazrey October 20th, 2007, 02:17 PM EUPE to launch RM685m projects over next 4 years
18 Oct 2007 7:49 PM THEEDGEDAILY
EUPE Corp Bhd will launch property projects with a gross development value (GDV) of RM685 million over the next four years, which is a sharp increase from the RM100 million to RM170 million in current billings, HLG Securities Research said.
It said EUPE, a mass-market housing developer, owned 680 hectares of development land in south Kedah and had a 50% market share of the Sungai Petani property market, which generated a consistent level of annual sales.
“Management is guiding for 20% earnings per share (EPS) growth over the FY08-09, which translates to a FY2/09 price earnings (PE) of 7.2 times, comparable to its small-cap property peers,” it said in a recent report.
HLG Research derived a fair value of RM1.27 for EUPE based on a sum-of-parts valuation and assuming a discounted cash flow of RM770 million on a six-year planned GDV and current unbilled sales.
Other assumptions were the future value on its development landbank and a 12.5% discount rate, based on the property sector’s 12-month earnings yield.
“At our fair value, EUPE trades at a FY08 PE of 12 times and FY09 of 10 times respectively, a 10%-20% premium to other small-cap property developers, which we justify given its relatively bigger landbank and higher trading liquidity,” it said.
HLG Research expects property demand in Sungai Petani to benefit from the spillover of Penang’s property boom given its 35km proximity and cost appeal to entry-level home buyers, as well as the government’s Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) initiative.
It said the NCER initiatives were to speed up economic growth in Penang, Kedah, Perlis and northern Perak, and were targeted to draw RM177 billion of investments over 2007–2025 into agro-based industries, logistics, manufacturing and tourism.
HLG Research said the group also has good execution records and product marketability with its management constantly monitoring and designing innovative products, such as dual kitchen and high ceilings, to cater for market needs.

Friday November 30, 2007
TheStar
KEDAH will spend RM9mil to beautify the Sungai Kedah and Sungai Anak Bukit waterfronts.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said work on the project would begin in June next year and be completed in 2009.
He said the state would build a 1km-long walkway along Sungai Kedah from Masjid Zahir to Dataran Tanjung Chali.
“Another walkway along the Kedah river will be built from Dataran Tanjung Chali to Mini Marina near Ampang Jajar.
“The stretch along the Kedah river will be about 1km,” he said.
Mahdzir was speaking to reporters after going on a river cruise with state Tourism, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Othman Aziz, state Industry, Transport, Science and In-novative and Chinese Community Affairs Committeee chairman Datuk Chong Itt Chew and state Public Works, Energy and Nature Committee chairman Datuk Nawawi Ahmad.
They went on the cruise to check out the plans for Sungai Kedah and Sungai Anak Bukit.
Mahdzir said the state also planned to build a suspension bridge across Sungai Kedah from Dataran Tanjung Chali to Kampung Seberang Nyonya.
“This project is mainly to enhance and beautify the area and also to reduce water pollution in the river,” he said.
Mahdzir said the state planned to hold various traditional water sports on both rivers once the project was completed.
