Zorba September 21st, 2005, 11:07 PM Here is the beutiful region of Trikala in Thessaly(Central Greece). I thought I would just continue the "green theme" going around the Greek forum right now. Trikala is also home to the famous meteora monasteries built in Byzantine times and are located on top of huge cliffs.

Christos7 September 21st, 2005, 11:46 PM Zorba, the pics aren't working.. I right clicked them and looked at a few, very nice. I think I have said this before, but pics from these kinds of sites usually aren't postable. If you have the time, just save them to your PC and upload them then they should work.
Zorba September 22nd, 2005, 03:45 AM ^^
Yes Christos you have mentioned it before to me but I dont have the time this time like I did at the time of the Zakynthos thread. These pictures were really great, too bad people cannot see them.
I did a "preview post" before I posted and I could see all the pictures so I don't know what happened since I cant see them now.
Christos7 September 22nd, 2005, 06:10 AM I have some time. :)

SouthernEuropean April 27th, 2007, 05:01 PM Kuvvaci hello,i googled Eskişehir and i honestly think it looks very nice and organized,it is much bigger than Trikala however it gives me a familiar feeling, you know with the river and some buildings and the bridges.
Here are some more general interest pictures:
This is where Trikala's state prison was located:

and this is where it's located now, where it recently moved:

A beautiful church, quite new ,not far from my old house:

Here's something interesting:
That's the old covered market of Trikala,it was demolished many years ago,i think with a renovation it could look nice nowdays:

pescarush April 30th, 2007, 10:41 PM :) so so so nice city! all is so peacefully and warm? where are the people?:sly: what they mainly do in Trikala? as i can imagine from the pics, it s a touristic city.
great photos:cheers:
SouthernEuropean May 1st, 2007, 12:00 AM Hello pescarush, thanks for watching the photos.Trikala is a town located in Central Greece.Trikala town itself has some nice places and generally a nice, quite relaxed atmosphere. As i've noticed in the last years Trikala is progressing fast, improving with many ways the image of the city.Trikala is not a touristic town and many people's main occupation is agriculture and farming.Trikala is the first producer of cheese in Greece:) Trikala's prefecture is maybe more interesting with many beautiful villages and a touristic place called Meteora, some huge rocks with monasteries located on them. The nearest town is Kalambaka.Another touristic place is a place called Pertouli, there is a ski resort.
By the way are you from Romania?some people of my town recently went in Brasov and came back with the best of memories, people of Brasov welcomed their greek friends and together,in Brasov they hold events like traditional dancing.Brasov and Trikala are sister cities.Trikala has a significant vlach population that holds some tights with Romanian vlachs:)
pescarush May 1st, 2007, 10:50 AM hello! yes, that place Meteora is quite something, so spectacular!
yep, i m romanian, and i know greeks and romanians are gettin well together.
u know we have greeks in our cities, too, i m from Constanta, a city shipyard of Black Sea and i think there are the most greeks.
there are vinyards in Trikala? cuz i like wine, and beer too!

to be honest i always wondered myself if that kind of architecture is either Ottoman or Greek, but i always thought of it as Ottoman..if someone could help..maybe?
It's also true that these kind of structures exist in many parts of Turkey in a big scale....just for your info murab the old part of Trikala was inhabited by rich Christians of the city..who later moved to other areas, and mainly settled in houses with neoclassical style.

Yes, indeed, the architectural style of these houses is ottoman with many slav influences (mainly Serb, as the Serbs had a very strong influence over the area)....The area was ruled for a long time by Turks (like the biggest part of the lands inhabited by the Greeks) and that was the style of house building no matter who and of what ethnicity lived in....However, this style is seen mainly in Northern Greece (Thessaly, Macedonia and Thrace) and less in Southern Greece and mainly in cities of that time and not in small villages....I hope I was of some help...

There are different architectural styles all over Greece. The homes in the picture date to the Ottoman era, are Ottoman-influenced, although as Arxitektonas points out, there are other influences as well. This style of homes is mostly prevalent in some towns of the Makedonia and Thessalia regions.

Almopos February 24th, 2009, 08:26 PM Trikala - an example for digital cities
Κύριε δήμαρχε, καταφέρατε να κάνετε τα Τρίκαλα την ηλεκτρονική πρωτεύουσα της Ελλάδας. Πώς γεννήθηκε αυτή η ιδέα και πόσο δύσκολο ήταν να υλοποιηθεί με δεδομένη τη γραφειοκρατία που επικρατεί;
Εκτός από τους νέους που μπορούν και χειρίζονται το διαδίκτυο, οι μεγαλύτερες ηλικίες τι έχουν κερδίσει από όλα αυτά τα προγράμματα;
Εκτός όμως από το διαδίκτυο και τις σύγχρονες τεχνολογίες, ο δήμος Τρικάλων έχει και περιβαλλοντικές ανησυχίες. Τι προβλέπει το πρωτόκολλο που υπογράψατε στις Βρυξέλλες μαζί με 210 δήμους από όλη την Ευρώπη;

[.....]
It seems that this project has been completed. Found some pictures on the construction copany's website. Looks nice, but I am not sure I like the blue railing.

touristas22 March 8th, 2010, 07:13 PM Wow, finally curves are included in architecture. For some time I was convinced that Greece is building strictly square boxy buildings. That is a great project, thank you Almopos! I like the blue transparencies.
It is very encouraging to see development such as this, in smaller towns. What I would like to see in the future is residential zones with a large number of buildings - lowrise mostly - with similar architecture and common infrastructure like pedestrian road network, local transport (slim trams) fast INTERNET lines etc... I would not like to see Trikala, Larissa, Volos and Ioannina to turn out like Athens or Thessaloníki. I believe that it would be very positive if these cities would make a serious attempt to invest in themselves by giving space for small business centers as well as industry. It would help the country and it's economy if these cities invest in attracting Athenians to live there permanently. But all that in a slow controlled manner, we do not want them to become full of polikatikeies. But the population has to spread in promising towns such as Trikala.
I think that is why the UK has a good spread of investment and infrastructure.
