Kommandant Mark December 15th, 2004, 11:52 PM Wish I took the pics, but they're not mine:)
They were taken in Primorska region:
http://www.slovino.com/data/zemljevid.gif
Btw, if anybody hasn't figured it out, the weird B&W photo up there...is Ljubljana from air.
edolen1 December 16th, 2004, 12:03 AM They're taken in my area, most probably. In Vipavska dolina, to be exact.
http://www.burger.si/QTVR/VipavskaDolina/VipavskiKriz/VipKriz_01.html Here's a nice full-screen 360° panorama of the valley.
Yea, that B&W photo is a model of LJ in the Magistrat, I think.
Here are some pics:

Beatiful views, i couldn't expect more.
MIMICA December 16th, 2004, 05:23 AM WoW! Now, that is what I would call a very nice landscape. The thing I wish we had more pictures of, was the cities...
LoKeY December 19th, 2004, 12:28 PM Here are a few more of Piran, on the coast.
This is Piran, the most beautiful town on Slovenian coast, although they are just three. The Municipality of Piran is renowned as the most touristically developed municipality in Slovenia. The archives reflect a rich historical tradition that reaches back to the Roman Empire. It is believed that the first walls were built in the 7th century, extended in the 12th century, and achieved their present appearance in the 16th century as protection against Turkish raiders. One of the greatest Middle-Ages violinists and great composers Giuseppe Tartini lived here.

http://www.trekearth.com/images/photos/2390/piran.jpg
This is the view from the fortress on the cliff above the town. Its very clear, because the strong north-east wind was blowing, more famous under the name Burja or Bora in Italian.
The statue of Giuseppe Tartini is situated on Tartini Square, bottom left.

Kampflamm December 27th, 2004, 09:32 PM KM, you're the greatest.
Slovenia looks like a great place. Seems to be a mix of various European architectural styles.
What's that place/church in the middle of a lake called BTW?

^^Those are all pictures of Bled and its lake. The church on the lake is called the Church of Assumption, the island itself has no name.
On a side note, since the days of Napoleon, that has been the only island in Slovenia. Until Napoleon's rule, the coastal cities of Izola and Koper were actually islands.

This is where they shot some scenes for the movie, Heidi.
Given its Alpine setting, the exterior scenes for Heidi were shot in the Alps, in Slovenia; the exteriors of 'Frankfurt' were shot in Ljubljana.
PyRoMaNiAc December 28th, 2004, 04:26 PM ^^^ That looks beautiful.
MIMICA December 29th, 2004, 12:35 AM Those pictures were absolutely beautiful! :)

Which one's your favorite?
Sarajka June 6th, 2005, 02:51 AM ^ Lake Bled is one of the most beautiful places in the world (too bad it doesn't have the customer service to match - hehehe). I'm amazed that I know all these lakes by name, by photos...there was nothing here I'm not familiar with, and it's not as though I'm an expert on Slovenia. Your country have exceptionally beautiful lakes. ;)
Thanks for sharing!
SinCity June 6th, 2005, 04:19 AM Oh my GOD! I keep thinking of Slovenia as in Alps and also Adria, but I keep forgetting those beautifully astonishing lakes. They are simply so amazing. :eek2:
WOW, thanks for sharing these pics with us AZ2S1 !!!!
Arpels June 6th, 2005, 11:59 AM yup Lake Bled is gorgeos!!
AZ2SI June 6th, 2005, 08:56 PM Thanks for your comments, everyone!
I totally agree with Mila about the uneven customer service standards in Bled; while they're pretty high in some places, there can be abysmal in others. I've also had a bad experience in one of the hotels there, as did Wicky (another member of these forums). It's a remnant of the Socialist-era mindset. Also, some of the 1970s/1980s architecture is just horrible (they don't call one big shopping plaza the "Ghadaffi Center" for no reason ;)), which is a shame since Bled really is a wonderful place. However, that's nothing that can't be fixed with some smart planning and leadership.
BTW, many Slovenes actually prefer Bohinj to Bled because it's more natural and quiet, compared to the resort-style atmosphere of Bled. For instance, there are no hotels close to the lake in Bohinj, but there are more rustic villages around it.
Urban Girl June 6th, 2005, 09:08 PM :eek2::eek2::eek2: oh that Lake Bled.... what a beatiful place, some pics are so surreal:okay:
sts June 7th, 2005, 03:58 PM Nice landscapes!!
edolen1 June 7th, 2005, 08:11 PM Unfortunately I've never been to the Triglav Lakes, but damn, they look puny! It's like that in all the pics of them I see! I really need a pic with a person next to the lake, so I can compare.. lol
Otherwise great pics, although you only included our Alpine lakes, we have nice lakes in other parts of the coutnry aswell.. :)
blimey June 7th, 2005, 08:45 PM That's very impressive. Makes me wanna visit Slovenia.

Dalmatian August 28th, 2005, 05:02 AM Slovenia was always one of the most beutiful republics in former Yugoslavia, it's northern landscape reminds me of Switzerland. I can't wait till I go skiing there again!

KhApZ! August 28th, 2005, 05:28 AM Slovenia is both naturally good looking and architecturally good looking! Absolutely stunning country. ;)
Bostech Computers August 28th, 2005, 07:03 AM On a good days, yopu can be on Alps and be able too see coastline. It's got some very nice looking cities and nature. But what is most amazing is that such small countiy got all different types of climates and nature, from sunny beaches of Piran and Portoroze to cold Alps.
I forgot name but that was a festival up in Alps, something like Octoberfest, every year in one of small villages.Lots of drinking, food and amazing sites, standing at bottom of Alps and looking up is just amazing.
Especially if you are drunk :runaway:

Many of the churches below are not really special per se, but I hope this will serve as a nice photo tour of Slovenia and its diverse architecture and landscapes:

AZ2SI July 11th, 2006, 06:26 PM P.S. One of the places of worship above is actually Russian Orthodox. Can you guess which one? I'll explain the story behind it when someone gets it right.
BG_PATRIOT July 11th, 2006, 07:42 PM http://www.slovenia.info/pictures/photoalbum/2003/349_big_SA_103.jpovecava.jpg
I am pretty sure this is the Russian church, I guess it because of the gold crosses on the tower. Btw Slovenia looks really nice, I had no idea that small country holds such beauties.

You're absolutely right, BG_PATRIOT (and thanks for your kind words)!
Here's the story: The road over the Vrsic Pass in Slovenia was built by Russian prisoners-of-war during WWI. In 1916, an avalanche buried and killed hundreds of them (the exact number is still unkown) so a small chapel was built in their honor. Even though I included it here, it's a chapel rather than a church -- that's why I called it "a place of worship" -- but mass is held there at least once a year.
Verso July 11th, 2006, 08:56 PM http://www.slovenia.info/pictures/photoalbum/2004/ARH000033_big_892_big.jpg
I like this one the most, Sveti Mihael on Barje (I haven't been inside yet). But there's a mad dog in the backyard! :D
AZ2SI July 11th, 2006, 09:01 PM ^^ Really? I think I saw cats there the last time I was there.
BTW, a quick note for non-Slovenes: This church was designed by Joze Plecnik, a famous Slovenian architect perhaps best known abroad for his work in Prague.
Verso July 11th, 2006, 09:19 PM Really? I think I saw cats there the last time I was there.
Cats as well, but when I peeped behind the church I came across a free-walking dog, which wasn't happy to see me at all, so I ran like mad back to my car. :D :D

AZ2SI July 13th, 2006, 10:44 AM Thanks for your kind words, everyone!
amazing!! these are reconstructed i'm assuming?
I'm not sure what you mean by "reconstructed." Many of them were recently restored to a degree (repainted, etc.), but with the exception of castle in Ljubljana, they are almost exactly the same as they were for centuries.
lakerdar123 July 13th, 2006, 06:35 PM yes thats what i meant.

Similos August 12th, 2006, 06:57 AM Since we were talking about this...here's a little contribution of mine....
A handful of my pics from last summer...taken during my two week stay in Slovenia, in a small town of Ljutomer near the city of Maribor:
http://www.mapzones.com/citymap/slovenia/ljutomer.jpg
Our great host took us to his parents house in a village outside of town for lunch - but instead of eagerly anticipated Slovenian dishes, we got served with Prebranac - Serbian-style bean dish:| Not that we didn't appreciate it, after all, prebranac goes down great with a couple of gallons of Lasko pivo, but come'n...
When I first saw this place, I thought...even if there is such a thing as paradise, it plays second fiddle to this little oasis.
Enjoy:)

Your truly reading the latest, hot of the presses Serbian yellow magazine, some ~500 kilometers from home....now why would Slovenes keep such things at home? Not to mention, how did it even get to such an isolated-seeming place (nah, not really - Slovenia has great roads & rail links)

Similos August 12th, 2006, 07:03 AM Btw, consider this thread a little "trailer" for my 100 photo thread of Ljubljana;)
vid August 12th, 2006, 08:21 AM Slovenia has alot of gay people. :) That could be why!
Ljubljana City August 12th, 2006, 12:25 PM Slovenia has alot of gay people. :) That could be why!
You probably think this way because other two of active Slovenian members are gays which make Slovenes 66 % here (I'm in the 33% ;) )... ;) But there are also few others that aren't so active, maybe they'll correct the percents... :)
Great pics, KM... I don't know Ljutomer much... I've been there only once on one of the geographical competitions...
And yes, there's no problem finding foreign newspapers in Slovenia (even in Ljutomer), especially in Ljubljana... There are several shops that sell printed media from all over the world... Many of those are of course from ex-Yugoslavia :)
Fructal juice was good, right? :D
