I think I've been a bit severe with this one. But it really can't compete with other French cathedrals.

The towers are a bit unorthodox but otherwise I think it looks great.

In fact, they were destroyed during the 100 years' war and then again during the war of religions. Henry IV the great made them rebuilt later, this is why they are different of the rest.

7.5 / 10 -

The Gothic sections of the church - the nave, choir and chevets - are fine, and so are the stained glass windows, especially the ones showing the life of Joan of Arc. They may be merely late 19th c., but they still have some of that good ol' Gothic fire when the sun hits them (Though they don't have the same fire that the glass of Chartres, Reims, Paris, or the Sainte Chapelle has)

The old cathedral, except for the east end, was destroyed by French protestants around 1560 or so. The rebuilding started with the choir, transepts and nave, and began shortly after 1600. Louis XIV, BTW, got his royal sun emblazoned in BOTH of the transept rose windows, which I thought was maybe a wee bit much, no matter HOW much he gave to the building fund....

The west front wasn't rebuilt until the 1790's, and that's where, IMHO, the problems begin. The tops of the towers are lacey, almost delicate, and are my favorite part of the whole facade. But somehow their lower sections are too boxy to really soar well, and the rest of the facade seems to have the same problem; it needs more height.

And while I readilly admit that I simply might not have had enough time to wrap my eyes and mind around its style, which ISN'T completely French Gothic, somehow the parts don't fit together. The west fronts of the other great churches I saw soar and dance toward the sky in one united symphony; here, the various doors, windows, etc., don't seem to be on key.

It's almost as if the architects had forgotten how to fit Gothic architecture together; I'm just glad they didn't try to slap on some Neo-Classical something or other...

Impressive, but not quite top-of-the-line.
