Doomsayers hear this: one of the country’s most successful businessmen is bullish on the Philippines’ economic prospects for 2006.

"I’m optimistic about the year 2006 for the Philippine economy, especially our tourism growth potentials," SM Group of Companies founder Henry Sy told The STAR after receiving the first-ever "Father of Philippine Retail Industry" award from President Arroyo and the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) last Dec. 5.

Forbes magazine has listed the 80-year-old Sy and Philippine Airlines (PAL) chairman Lucio Tan as among the world’s wealthiest men.

At the grand dinner tribute for the PRA awardees held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ortigas Center, Sy said he is looking forward to a better economy next year when he inaugurates his 500,000-square-meter Mall of Asia at the Manila Bay reclamation area as a major tourist destination in the country.

He pledged more investments from the SM Group and advised politicians to "work more, talk less." His daughter, Banco de Oro Universal Bank chairman Teresita "Tessie" Sy, added: "Our family is confident the new year will be better for the Philippine economy, notwithstanding the troubles in politics. We are very touched by this great honor for our father. I have worked for our dad for 35 years, and he is really hardworking, disciplined and a visionary. Let us have more positive thinking and just keep working hard."

The PRA has also chosen Sy’s SM City Baguio as the Shopping Center of the Year. The two finalists were the Ayala Center-Greenbelt and Ayala Center-Glorietta. The PRA dinner tribute in honor of the SM Group was attended by numerous tycoons, business leaders and other dignitaries, including the entire Sy family and even competitors in the mall and retail sectors.

Socorro Ramos, founder of the National Bookstore chain which was elevated to the Hall of Fame as Outstanding Filipino Retailer, said: "The SM malls of Henry Sy are located all over the Philippines and service all kinds of people very well. I wish the good Lord will bless Henry Sy with many more years so he can continue to do his mission of helping others."

Ben Chan, founder of Bench, which won as Global Retailer of the Year, said: "The Philippine retail industry would not be the same without Henry Sy."

Meanwhile, Tony Tan Caktiong, founder of the Jollibee fastfood chain, said: "Henry Sy is an inspiration. He always emphasized hard work."

A highlight of the PRA dinner tribute was a large-screen video presentation on the rags-to-riches saga of the legendary Sy.

Like many of Southeast Asia’s business pioneers, Sy was an immigrant from south China who exemplified traditional Confucian values of hard work, perseverance, discipline and frugality.

Sy was 12 years old when he migrated here from Ang-khue Village, Dieng-oh, municipality of Jinjiang county (now a city) of Fujian province. His Chinese name — "Sy Chi Sieng" — means "to attain ultimate success."

His father’s humble sari-sari store on Echague (now Carlos Palanca street) in Quiapo, Manila was looted during World War II, so his father returned to China. But the young Sy never gave up. Though he started studying English and entered grade one at the age of 12 at the Quiapo Anglo-Chinese School, he worked hard to catch up.

He was already in the buy and sell trade when he enrolled in a commerce course at the Far Eastern University (FEU), but he had to stop schooling after two years due to the pressures of running his businesses.

Up to this day, he still maintains his rented offices in a Makati building. He used to live for decades in a condominium unit, but he revealed that his kids have recently built him an elegant but very simple bungalow in North Forbes Park in Makati so he no longer has to ride elevators. Of his career, Sy said: "My first business was shoes, and the first store was in Carriedo street. The store became very popular. One store grew to three stores. It did not take me long to reach the top in shoes. But shoes were mainly a cottage industry, and supply was limited. So I decided to expand to a big, full-line department store to service shoppers better. In 1975, Shoemart opened its first integrated department store in Makati. In 1983, we were building SM City-North EDSA, our first shopping mall. Many people said at that time that I was crazy. There was a political crisis, interest rates were as high as 45 percent and the location of the mall was in the middle of nowhere. But the mall was an instant success. SM malls are now favorite destinations for shopping, entertainment, and many services. They have changed Philippine lifestyle."

Sy persevered even more after the 1989 bloody military coup attempt led by Col. Gregorio "Gringo" Honasan and the economy was again in shambles. He built two sprawling malls — SM Centerpoint in Sta. Mesa and SM Megamall in Mandaluyong. Despite the "Hello, Garci" political crisis and ongoing economic jitters, Sy is now rushing to complete one of his grandest projects — the Mall of Asia — at the Manila Bay reclamation area.

Nope, but it's a short walk from SM Megamall's building A, you can cross from Megamall to Podium by passing-through St. Francis Square Mall. St. Francis is not connected to Megamall though, you need to cross St. Francis drive first.

There is always room for one more mall’

Everybody seems abuzz about shopping at 168 in Divisoria or the tiangges for Christmas gifts than in the malls, but mall owners are undeterred.

In fact, expect more malls to sprout in the country in the next few years in anticipation of bigger consumer demand and a rise in Filipinos' spending power due largely to increasing remittances of Pinoys working abroad.

Business Monday talked to three of the leading mall developers and asked why they remained optimistic in retail.

SM Supermalls

The SM group, the undisputed leader in mall development, is not about to give part of its market share to its competitors and opened three malls this year--SM City, San Lazaro, SM Supercenter in Valenzuela and SM Supercenter in Molino, Cavite, a province north of Metro Manila.

Millie Dizon of the SM group says that San Lazaro was a good site as it sits on the former Manila Jockey Club. It is both historic and bustling location.

The Valenzuela mall, on the other hand, serves markets in the north metro area while the Molino mall targets the rapidly developing province of Cavite.

"Cavite has become a favored location of many industrial and commercial businesses, as well as residential subdivisions," she says.

To date, Cavite has 21 industrial parks spread over 20 municipalities, creating pockets of activities that will support a mall.

Dizon says, however, that because of increased competition and more discriminating consumers, developers have to give the market something extra.

The SM group, for instance, has modified the architecture of its malls to depart from the usual "box" look of the earlier malls.

"Our new malls have more color and are more "out of the box" in terms of design. We try to study the communities and the market in each of the new areas, making these a basis for merchandise, tenant mix, etc.," Dizon says.

She adds malls have become part of the lives of many Filipinos.

The Ayala group

The Greenbelt mall of the Ayala group has earned accolades here and abroad for being the best designed in the country, with its melding of modern structure with extensive landscaping and environmental management.

Rowena M. Tomeldan, vice president of the commercial centers group of Ayala Land Inc., says Greenbelt will continue to be developed.

Greenbelt 5 is the last phase of the program to develop Greenbelt in the Makati central business district into the country's sole premier lifestyle center.

It is scheduled to open by 2007.

Greenbelt is just one of the major mall retail developments that the Ayala group has outlined over the next few years.

Another project is the North Triangle Commercial Center Project at the corner of Edsa and North Avenue in Quezon City.

Approximately 200,000 square meters, Tomeldan says the project will combine the strengths of a traditional shopping center with new concepts and specialized lifestyle zones.

Another major project is the development of the retail feature of Serendra in Fort Bonifacio, scheduled to open by the third quarter of next year.

This is part of the entire development of the Bonifacio Global City where the Ayala group recently bought into.

The last major project is the expansion of the Ayala Center in Cebu, the biggest urban center outside Metro Manila. Development will start by the middle of next year to be completed by early 2008.

Tomeldan says the group was optimistic about the retail sector because it is highly dynamic and continues to adapt to the changing needs of customers, thus, ensuring sustainability.

The Ayala group also relies heavily on market research to determine the potential volume of customers. The group looks into the behavior and preferences of the market to tailor fit the development.

Data from the National Statistical Coordination Board showed that the retail's sector contribution to the gross national project went up to 18 percent last year from 11 percent in 2003. This is expected to go up this year and in the next few years.

"There is always room for one more [mall]. The challenge lies in surpassing customers' expectations every time we build a mall. We try to give them world class malls yet sensitive to their needs," she says.

Ortigas and Co.

The Ortigas group is known in the retail sector for the Greenhills Shopping Center in San Juan, considered the tiangge or bazaar capital of the Philippines.

Ortigas is still in the middle of redeveloping the shopping center to keep it in step with the changing preferences of the market.

But in September this year, the Ortigas group scored another coup with the opening of the Tiendesitas (little stores) in another Ortigas property in Quezon City.

Rex C. Drilon II, chief operating officer of Ortigas and Co., the owner and developer of the Greenhills and Tiendesitas projects, says the group put up Tiendesitas to give the market a good place to get the best of Filipino products.

Drilon says Filipino products, from food to clothes to crafts, used to be relegated to corners of big malls or were only available during festivals or special occasions.

With Tiendesitas, he says Filipinos and foreigners would get Filipino products the whole year through.

"We want it to be a destination place, especially for balikbayans and foreigners looking for souvenirs or a taste of what the Philippines has to offer," he says.

Tiendesitas is an eye catcher with its pavilions made in typical Filipino bahay kubo design, with roofs covered with grass.

There are separate pavilions for fashion, food, antiques and garden and pet supplies.

Drilon says the response of the market has been overwhelming and buoys their confidence that the market does appreciate Filipino-made products.

"Here, it's the best of Pinoy, every day," he says

Super SM Hypermarket to rise in Ortigas

Super SM Hypermarket recently held a ground breaking and capsule-laying ceremony at its future site in Pasig, near Tiendesitas, Fronta Verde.

The stand-alone hypermarket, which combines supermarket, general merchandise and discount retailers, will have an area of approximately 55,000 square meters and will be operational in 2006.

Super SM Hypermarket EVP Robert Kwee took part in the ceremonies together with Ortigas and Co.’s Rex Drillon and Cathy Casares Co. and Greenhills Shopping Center’s Joselito Santos.

Also present were members of the design and construction team: architect John Raymund Pangilinan of itslocal architecs, JR Pangilinan and Associates; Ibrahom Nuno, representing its contractor< Metro StoneRich Corp.; and Dennis Abcede Jr. of Abcede and Associates, its project managers. They were joined by SM’s engineering team, Antolin Paule and architect Fides Garcia.

Super SM Hypermarket so far has outlets at SM City Sucat, SM City Bicutan, SM City Marilao, SM Supercenter Valenzuela and SM Supercenter Molino.

Sta. Lucia East is under Cainta, Rizal but Sta. Lucia is directly above the boundary between Cainta and Pasig. :D

I took this picture on the Bougainvilla Gazeebo ( I think thats is where they will put up the SM.

In my opinion, I think that is a form of political advertising. It is their responsibility to ensure sanitation and cleanliness in their places. I used to remember back in the 80's and early 90's that the garbage trucks rarely collect garbages tapos tambak tambak ang mga basura kahit saan lang. At least ngayon, its much much better at pailan ilan na lang . I hope they keep this up.

it's mix of both then, having modern stuff doesn't lose the city's historical links.... unless of course they demolished things like the bamboo organ in place of these joints ;)

Robinsons Novaliches! When the mall was just a few months old, marami pang tao but eventually they lost to SM Fairview na katapat lang. And then SM decided to put up an SM Fairview annex kaya lalo pang nalugi yung Robinsons. There was a time last year na mas malala pa yung mall compared to Uniwide. This year nagrenovate yung Robinsons. Inalis nila yung Big R tapos kalahati ng first floor ginawang dep't store. They also removed the fountains para makatipid siguro. Yung second and third floor walang store except for a Greenwich restaurant and one Adidas store na mukhang malulugi na. Tiangges have occupied the second and third floor, too.

What is happening to Robinsons? Sayang naman...

P.S. It was earlier mentioned that Robinsons got its name from Robina Gokongwei's brother. I think Robinsons actually refers to Robina and her 2(?) sons. Kaya Robinsons, meaning Robina and Sons.

SM tries different expansion strategy

SM is adopting different expansion strategy as SM stores recently opened at the newly renovated V-Mall (formerly Virra Mall) in Ortigas.

SM Appliance Center, Our Home, Toy Kingdom, Ace Hardware, and Watsons all opened simultaneously with a toast led by SM Department Store SVP Jojo Mendiola, San Juan Mayor JV Ejercito, the guest of honor of the event. They were joined by Felicidad Sy, SM President Tesie Sy-Coson, SM Investment President Harley Sy, and SM Supermarket SVP Herbert Sy, as well as principals from each of the stores: Maria Teresa Cheng of SM Appliance Center, Philip Chua Yao of Our Home, Rosemarie Dy-Lim of Toy Kingdom, Ace Hardware’s Johnny Cobankiat, and Watsons-Philippines’ Andrew Denby.

The decision of SM to open its stores in a mall is an experiment that can market future expansion plans of the conglomerate.

SM Appliance Center carries a good mix of reputable appliance brands – Sony, Samsung, Sharp, Westinghouse, Panasonic , and JVC, as highlighted in its tagline, Our Name is Your Guarantee Established in 1983, it is also known for its professional sales staff, who are not only well trained in service but also in product knowledge.

Toy Kingdom, which was established in 1995, carries a wide variety of toys for boys and girls of all ages. There is also an in house Interactive Zone, where kids can try out the latest X-Box games before buying.

Our Home focuses on large assortment of contemporary furniture and merchandise. This lifestyle store was established in 1997.

Two of these stores have global roots. The new ACE Hardware store, which is a franchise of the US based chain, is a haven for DIY enthusiast; while the new Watsons Personal Care Store is a joint venture with the Hutchison-Wampoa Group of Hongkong.

I visited Uniwide Coastal Mall just before Christmas, the warehouse club, Jollibee and tiangges seem to be doing ok business. But they only occupy like less than 1/3 of the massive mall area. Everything else is shuttered and abandoned. Depressing talaga. They have some signs up saying that they want to convert some space into call center offices, but I don't think they'll have an easy time getting locators because the look of the place is just so depressing and poorly maintained. Busted lights, exposed wiring, broken glass, cobwebs. They can shoot a movie about a "haunted mall" here.

Today, our malls generate over 120 million visits annually.

Their malls have 120 million visitors annually? Okay, let's do the math.
120 million visitors a year
(120 million / 12 months)
10 million visitors a month
(10 million / 30 days)
333,333 visitors per day

Imagine that, 333,333 visitors per day FOR ALL THE 18 ROBINSONS MALLS

its year end sale at megamall... juz been there awhile ago.. no traffic.. everything is pretty smooth!

I guess majority of the malls in the whole Philippine Archipelago are holding their year-end sales to empty out their inventories.

Infact, I was able to buy a pair of shoes at P700 (Originally priced at P1400) :colgate:

EDIT: I edited the price. I had a typo error by typing 500 instead of 700.

For me, SM Cebu failed ONCE. And that's why they decided to refurbish the mall beginning last year. Ngayon, they are starting to rise again but they can never reclaim their previous glory that's now with Ayala Center. :nono: :D

so what's the criteria of a failed shopping mall? there's gotta be more than just shopper traffic. if an SM mall lost a significant number of shoppers to a rival mall doesn't necessarily translate to failing or sumthin :dunno:

i think a mall's success is not about how many people go into it... but on how many people spends in it and how much the developer get profits from it...

take for example shang and megamall... there are awfully alot of people sa megamall compared sa shang but both malls are considered successful kase they both profit.

Robinson's Novaliches... was slaughterd by SM fairview... the mall was barely open for 6 months... unwilling defeat... nag-renovate sila... made evrything simpler...and rented a whole floor for a call center... now kahit konti ung pedestrian traffic nila... that mall can be considered a success kase they made better use for the wasted space and they created a market for their own mall

Another Giant Mall, in the next 4 years,
now, in the heart of Quezon City

Araneta Center Inc., now under the leadership of Jose’s son Jorge, intends to regain the center’s former glory. And then some. In the next four years the company plans to complete a 3.5 million-square-foot mall (325,160 square meters), which will connect directly to the two mass transit railway terminals outside the center, and to build nearly 900,000 square feet of offices, a hotel and apartments.

The planned seven-level shopping center, called the Millennium Mall, is to be built around the recently renovated stadium, with 500,000 square feet of shopping on each floor. Besides offering a range of American and European stores new to the Philippines, it will house 366,000 square feet (34,0002 square meters) of entertainment tenants, including a full-size ice skating rink, a multiplex cinema and IMAX theater, a bowling alley and a children’s and family entertainment center as well as other attractions, said Solomon.

The owners also are considering building an additional, 200,000-square-foot mall (18,580 square meters), which they want to call Manhattan Mall, with housing on top.

I'm looking for a mall space in either Glorietta or Mall of Asia or both for a boutique. Already inquired with Ayala Leasing but they said they don't have an available space. Was wondering if you guys have contacts inside, or know of existing boutique lessees who are interested to sublease their spaces or others who want to "sell" their boutique space? I'm willing to negotiate.

Please pm me =) Thanks =)

Ey... have you seen this very strange sign at Greenbelt 3?

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c78/eatabagel/52805883_770f161058.jpg

Here's a blog entry about the sign: http://www.livejournal.com/users/lushlush/190093.html

And here's the background text from that blog:

This is one of the most bizarre signs I have ever encountered. The sign is comical in itself: stick figure rides up the escalator and bumps his head on a hanging sign, the impact causing VIOLENT RED RAYS OF PAIN. Beware! All is well and good until, armed with a newfound caution, you look around for the offending object and realize that IT'S A SIGN ABOUT THE SIGN ITSELF.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c78/eatabagel/52805877_7462c56d05.jpg

It's located above the midpoint of the escalator between the 2nd and 3rd floors of Greenbelt 3. The logic behind the existence of this self-referential sign escapes me! What is it for? Why is it there? Did whoever put it up realize that if there were no sign, there would be no need to warn about it? Is this a joke from the developers? Is it a lesson in recursiveness? Is it a philosophical prop? What does it all mean? Why are WE here?

Owwww, my head....

-----

HUH?!?! Very strange indeed... A self referential sign. Shall I start bringing out my existentialism books to help me explain this?

Anyway, visit the blog. There seems to be an explanation there.

^^ I believe Ayala's not dumb to place that there without any reason. The reason behind? I dunno. ;)

bagel
January 5th, 2006, 06:36 PM
The actual piece of plexiglass is not dumb and does make sense--- it's there to prevent stupid people from sticking their heads out and getting decapitated when the escalator goes past a piece of structural concrete. They will hit the plexiglass and get hurt a little bit and stick their heads back in line instead of hitting concrete and getting hurt a lot (with blood, guts and gore if we're lucky).

But the actual sign is pretty dumb of Ayala. Come on now... you can't expect the most respected company in the Philippines to not make mistakes.

I actually think that out of all the mistakes any company can make, this one was a pretty good one to make because it's entertaining, bizarre and puzzling. It also allows us to think about a great variety of existential philosophical questions like:
- The sign's purpose would not be there if the sign wasn't there?
- You are what you say you are?

Maybe, the plexiglass sign was designed to keep the people from extending thier heads outside of the escalator area while they are reading and trying to figure out what the sign means. Knowing how some Pinoys are regressive and obstinate, once you put up a sign "Do Not Extend Your Head or any Body Part Outside Escalator Area", they will sooner do so. Remember "Bawal Umihi Dito" and "No Crossing" signs? People will just ignore those and do exactly what the signs are warning them not to do. I think they employed a psychological expert when designing that sign. Or maybe, it's a Candid Camera moment. There is a hidden camera somewhere to monitor people's reactions towards the sign. Hey, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera." :)

BTW, I liked the Gateway Mall ibeside the Araneta Center in Cubao when I visited it last. It had an inner Atrium with beautiful interior tropical garden and with sunlight being filtered from the sky. I wish I was able to take pictures. The have a movie house just for a small group where you can have a special viewing of movies. Great to impress a date.
