^^ I think there's a certain effect they want to achieve. I've been there several times and I love the lighting (except the activitu area, the center pa naman ng mall). For me, I find TriNoma's dimness having a somewhat cozy and glamorous feel in it. Most pictures just don't give justice to the actual look of the lighting.

I love the lighting too (except the activity center kasi parang nakakapale ng skin. ) and I tried my best to capture the actual look of the lighting. I hope I gave it justice.

RLC plans 16 more malls in 5 years
http://www.mb.com.ph/BSNS20080418122115.html

James A. Loyola

Robinsons Land Corporation aims to take advantage of the strong growth in consumer spending by undertaking to build 16 new malls nationwide over the next five years at a cost of about P12 billion.

In an interview after the firm’s annual stockholders’ meeting yesterday, RLC president Frederick Go said they are also putting up four residential condominiums, six residential subdivisions, one hotel and two office buildings.

Go said all the property needed for the construction of the new malls have already been acquired and are part of RLC’s 67-hectare land bank for malls. The firm is opening five malls this year consisting of two in Manila, one in Tagaytay, one in Cabanatuan and one in Pulilan, Bulacan.

Other malls in the pipeline include those already under construction in Dumaguete, Davao and Cebu. He said some malls will cost over P1 billion but most will cost less since they will be in the provinces.

"We will continue to take advantage of the growing business process outsourcing industry and its complimentary nature by allotting leasable are in some of our new malls for BPOs," said Go adding that about four to five of the malls in the pipeline will have BPO components.

He said RLC’s office buildings will remain a major and fast growing source of recurring revenue with the soaring rental rates brought about by the demand for office space.

"For fiscal year 2008, we will complete the construction of Robinsons Cybergate Tower 3 and will commence construction of Robinsons Cybergate Plaza. These new buildings will add another 90,000 square meters of office space to our portfolio," Go said.

Plans are also underway for another 40,000 square meter office building in Ortigas Center which is currently master-planned as a mixed-use complex which will include a deluxe hotel.

Go said they also have in the pipeline 29 residential condominiums for launch and construction, aiming to launch three projects per year. However, overseas marketing will defocus from the United States and focus on Filipinos in the United Kingdom and Europe.

However, the bulk of sales this year of 85 to 90 percent is expected to be generated from the local market while the share from overseas is seen to drop from the peak of 20 percent due to the global credit crunch.

RLC plans to open a 100 to 120-room hotel in Tagaytay next year beside a residential subdivision and commercial area it is developing. Go said they have yet to decide whether to contract a hotel manager or operate it themselves.

I've never been to this mal... EVER! My friends say it's good, but I've not the interest in going to this place until this photo! Hehe. :D

About SM City North EDSA, isn't the new digital IMAX supposed to be one of The Block's existing cinema? How come I just learned that one of The Block's cinema is now called the D-Cinema? Why not IMAX? Does that mean that the new IMAX will be at the u/c annex instead?

I was in SM NoE yesterday. I watched The Superhero Movie, but before that, I made chismis with the lady who's watching over. She said the cinemas at The Block were called D-Cinema. She furthered that an I-MAX will really be constructed there but wasn't able to give more information of the specific location. With that, I guess it will be at the former SM City Annex, or in the new building right next to the building beside the former SM City Annex.

------------

About the accident in TriNoMa, at about what time did it happen? I was also in TriNoMa before and after we watched a movie in SM NoE. I didn't notice that something happened though.

------------

D-Cinema and the cinemas at TriNoMa doesn't have big price differences, but why is it that TriNoMa's cinemas are La-Z Boy, but D-Cinema's aren't even if you're in the Premiere D-Cinema? Hindi rin Lover's Seat ung sa D-Cinema, unlike in TriNoMa's which are.

Beautiful mall! Especially the interior. Was there earlier this year, and coming from the U.S. was suprised to see Toys R Us there, and even a Spa! It's still very new so some stores weren't open yet. I like how it connected to the original section to create a pretty BIG shopping center!...definitely one of my fav in Metro Manila!! :okay:

The Mega Expansion's façade is now being done. They're installing the same glass used for the bridge. I actually think it's the same glass that they took from the bridge, cleaned, polished, and voila, they've got "new" glass ready to be installed in the Mega Expansion.

All tenants in the east side of the bridge are now closed as part of the expansion.

The three corridors leading to Cyberzone is now also being renovated, as is some parts of the Department Store.

There is also a new department store in the Midtown mall (new wing ) of Robinson's Manila and there's still a department store on its old wing . Are they gonna close this old department store soon and refurbished its huge space ( 3-levels at all ) that will be vacated to be at par with the new wing ?This old department store seems so cramped nowadays ,even the aisles are so narrow while the new department store is spacious and well lit.

thomasian
April 22nd, 2008, 06:03 AM
I don't think they'll be closing the whole old wing. The Midtown wing right now only has the Ladies wear, Girls Teens Wear, Ladies Shoes, and Cosmetics section. Those alone already fully occupy the whole two levels (unfair ha, walang panlalaki dun sa bagong wing?!? We demand equal shopping rights! :D ). It won't be able to accomodate any more merchandise coming from the main wing just in case they decide to renovate all three levels of it.

Imagine all of that two-level Midtown space filled with girly stuff, loads of bikinis and other swimwear, while I had a hard time finding decent swimwear for men at the men's, teens', and children's wear section in the main wing (here's the only thing I got for myself from Robinsons Dept. Store's Children's Wear at the 3rd Level, the red swim trunks at the bottom-right of this picture (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b210/ofngol/2008/102_0367x.jpg), others are from SM, Landmark, Metro, and Isetann department stores), there's very little variety, if any, of brands and designs for men to choose from at Robinsons Department Store. That's so unfair, guys also need variety in swimwear!

It seems like the old wing will be renovated in sections to displace as little merchandise as possible. I don't think closing a whole level of it for renovation while cramping out the remaining two-levels with stuff from the closed floor is a good thing. It will only make the old wing more chaotic. I guess for renovation - closing half, or a third of a floor at a time is a good option.

LhexiMont
April 22nd, 2008, 01:12 PM
I did not realize at all that the department store at the Midtown wing is only 2 levels and has mostly for ladies ..since I thought some unopened sections within the department store are still huge space .
Anyway , I just noticed how narrow the alleys of their main department store , and should be free up a bit once the new wing becomes fully operational ,
Sana kahit paano yung old wing , sort of ma-renovate din to be at par with the new wing . Sobrang linis kasi at pleasant to the eyes yung new wing in terms of design as compared to the main mall .

^^ Robinsons Galleria on the other hand did otherwise. Having no expansion of the Department Store in their Expansion Mall, while even reducing the size of the existing Department Store from three levels to two, making what used to be the ground level Department Store a mall space instead. Well at least they expanded a little, just a little bit (but not enough to regain ground level space lost), with the addition of an entrance at the newly renovated West Wing.

The Greening of SM North EDSA

SM North EDSA, SM Prime’s very
first mall is about to turn green.
Construction is now underway
to create a 400-meter long
“Skygarden” with a gross floor area of
approximately 31,000 square meters.

It’s a haven where shoppers and visitors of SM
North EDSA can stroll along a landscaped and
covered path, pleasantly lined with tropical trees,
flowering plants, and shrubs. The Skygarden will
stretch from one end of the mall to the other so
that it will have a number of entryways leading
to different sections of the mall.

It will be decorated with a lagoon, an
aviary for bird lovers, an amphitheater for
shows and special events, cafés, casual dining,
and novelty shops. A waterfall will cascade
from the Skygarden at level four down to
ground level facing EDSA—a piece of art
that promises to create a calming and colorful
scene, especially at night when various lights
provide an added dimension to the falls and
the pond beneath. Below the Skygarden will be
a transport depot for buses and added parking
space for shoppers.

“This project is the first to be introduced
to any SM mall as we honor SM North EDSA,
being our very first, by sprucing it up with natural
elements. This is part of SM Prime’s commitment
toward enhancing the environment, and bringing
nature and the beauty that comes with it closer to
our customers,” said Mr. Hans T. Sy, President of
SM Prime.

It may be recalled that SM Prime built its
very first mall in 1983 on the north end of a main
thoroughfare in Metro Manila called EDSA, the
acronym for Epifanio De Los Santos Avenue.
Back then, the lot that was purchased in 1978 was
no better than a vacant swamp remotely located
from the center of the metropolis. SM Prime’s
Chairman, Mr. Henry Sy, Sr. saw the potential of
the place, standing at the crossroad for regional
traffic coming to and from the northern provinces
of Luzon.

http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/7752/smnorthaw7.jpg

Mr. Sy took his inspiration to build SM North
EDSA from the first few malls built in the U.S.,
which he thought Filipinos will want to have.
Ironically, many thought his plan was ill-timed
because the construction of the North EDSA
mall happened when divisive political issues were
prevalent in the country. The mall opened in 1985
with a gross floor area of 125,000 square meters, at
the height of one of the country’s worst crises.

“We had a tough time getting tenants to fill
up the place. It was a risky period in our country’s
history. So, we opened with only the SM
Department Store and another small shop as the
mall’s tenants,” said Mrs. Teresita Sy-Coson, Vice
Chairperson of SM Investments Corporation.

But to everyone’s surprise and those of many
skeptics, crowds came and filled the mall. “It was
an instant success,” noted Mrs. Sy-Coson.
As more tenants came in and entertainment
concepts were introduced to the mall such as
cinemas, SM North Edsa came to be known as
one that institutionalized the “one-stop shopping
concept” and was the first to introduce “malling”
as a pastime in the Philippines.

Businesses and real estate thrived where SM
North EDSA was built, that over a period of 20
years, it has seen four expansions including The
Block which opened in 2006. It continues to draw
an average foot traffic of about 400,000 per day
giving enough scope for SM Prime to undertake
yet another expansion.

By the time this current project is completed
to include the Skygarden and the Annex building
expansion, SM North EDSA’s gross floor area
will quadruple to 456,000 square meters from its
original size, and make it the country’s largest,
and among the most successful malls in the world.

In addition, it will carry the distinction
of being the first mall to truly influence and
revolutionize the malling experience for Filipinos.
This speaks of SM’s ability to build, expand
and sustain its malls, allowing each and every area
to establish its own identity and grow within its
surrounding community.

Nice read. Waterfalls from the 4th floor? Kamusta naman, talagang level up na ang labanan ng SM North at TriNoma...gosh i wonder what's the outcome of this...Who will win? Yeah i know, US, the customers but which mall will reign supreme in the area?

Wait a Sec!!!

SM Mall Of Asia has a gross floor area of 386,224 (pls check) square meters...
SM North Edsa will have 456,000 square meters??

So it will now be the Largest SM Mall/Mall in the Phillippines?

2nd. SM Mall Of Asia
3rd. SM Megamall??

1st. SM North Edsa
2nd. SM Mall Of Asia
3rd. SM Megamall??

exage! Kamusta naman...patayan ng business? ok fine lols

According to SM Prime's 2007 Annual Report, SM Mall of Asia's gross floor area is now 407,101 sqm.

SM Supercenter Muntinlupa Brings
Great Shopping, Entertainment to
South Metro Area

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/2562/muntife8.jpg

On November 16, 2007, SM
Prime opened its 30th mall, in
Muntinlupa City. The new mall,
SM Supercenter Muntinlupa,
has as its main anchor tenant
an SM Hypermarket, which
conveniently offers a balanced mix of food and
non-food items at highly affordable prices. The
Supercenter occupies 36,601 square meters (sqm.)
of land and has a gross floor area (GFA) of 53,986
sqm. Of this, the leasable area is 26,828 sqm with
the hypermarket occupying more than 11,000
sqm.

SM Supercenter Muntinlupa likewise offers
a food court and four cinemas with a combined
seating capacity of 1,600. Other mall tenants
include Jollibee, McDonald’s, Tokyo Tokyo,
Chowking, National Bookstore, Penshoppe,
Ricky Reyes Hair Salon, Ideal Vision, Let’s Face
It, and Global Medical Group Specialists, among
others.

SM Prime President Mr. Hans Sy said, “We
welcome our customers to SM Supercenter
Muntinlupa. Inasmuch as it is in the southernmost
part of the metropolis, the City of Muntinlupa
is one of the key areas of Metro Manila, as it
serves as a gateway to and from the burgeoning
CALABARZON area, a fitting location for a
community mall such as an SM Supercenter.”

I just want to share pictures of the C and B Circle Mall in Marikina Heights. It's lay out is a half-circle and it used to be called "S" Mall because of its size. There's a public park across it which partly explains the unhurried atmosphere.

they made trinoma bigger in visual aspects. because according to the pic, the buildings which connect the mall to the parking makes the mall bigger, due to that the parking spaces. but i can say indeed that trinoma is a very spacious mall! nakakaintimidate yung luwag! can they add more shops sa gitna? hahaha..... juz makin my day and ur day happy, ay este night...... :)

From Ongpin to MoA, ride a jeepney to Sta Cruz, take a short walk to the LRT1 Carriedo Station, take the LRT1 up to the EDSA Station, and then take the orange jeepneys that go straight to MoA.

From Ongpin to Power Plant Mall at Rockwell Center, ride a jeepney to Sta Cruz, take a short walk to the LRT1 Carriedo Station, take the LRT1 up to the EDSA Station transferring to the MRT Taft station via the footbridge, take the MRT up to Guadalupe Station, and ride the Pedro Gil jeep beside the Guadalupe Mall and tell the driver to drop you at Power Plant or alternatively, take a cab, it will only be around P50 up to Power Plant from MRT Guadalupe Station.

North Edsa deserve to have the Mega Expansion title..

They should've used MegaMalls name to be intended as pun for a really "mega-expansion." Ginamit lang naman nila ung ganung title because of the mall's name, but comparing it to the expansion in SM NoE, walang-wala un dun. :ohno:

They don't look the same. OA sa liwanag yung Midtown, at sobra din yung glare ng metal-halide downlights nila, masyadong scattered ang ilaw, di sya sobrang focused downwards, di kasing narrow ung beam nung ginamit nila unlike yung sa Podium. I like TriNoma's lighting better, well except for their activity center. But generally, I think with a lighting like that of TriNoma, it may look better than TriNoma. :D

Pag pasok ko kanina, Ako'y napa, Oh my Gosh ang dami namang tao (akala ko ako lang haha ) On the outside, it looks like Landmark, yung inside setup parang sa The Block  All walks of life (due to neighbor Munoz Market, Class C, D & E kung manamit mga tao duun) Kainis gusto ko sana mag Supermarket (ang laki parang sa LandMark TriNoma) eh ang daming tao. Kainis. Take note, Walang FoodCourt kc maliit lang yung space.

Confirmed yung Gold's Gym duun. Ok naman sya. Registration Open with free 36 visits. Gym Opens June 1 2008. Malaki yung Abenson's, di pa bukas yung G2000 Cinemas. Convenient magdala ng cart sa parking kc may walkalator, ganda parang sa Landmark Trinoma. Very convenient puntahan kc nasa Edsa lang.

Pramis ang daming tao gosh, ewan ko kung matutuwa ako o maiinis. Tapos yung mga guard pati mukhang yagit pinapapasok? :ohno: All in all masarap sya puntahan kc andun lahat ng Basics of a typical SM Mall. [Ewan ko lang kung may Department Store]

For small community/neighborhood malls like WalterMart, I think it's ok to dress like that. No one should really care how you dress. But IMO there should a dresscode in some big malls. Like what is being done in Market! Market! & Robinsons: no slippers, no shorts. Even if we live in a hot tropical country, we should understand that these malls requires some sort of decency. However, I noticed that some of these malls let foreigners in shorts and slippers come in (now that is discrimation). I don't mind poor people flock Greenbelt 5 but I think it's nicer if they would at least not be wearing duster, slippers, sandos & shorts. Same thing goes with the rich & the foreigners.

This is not discriminating against the poor. I believe that we should know how to dress properly in public places like what we do in churchers, schools, etc. What is permitted in the US should not always be permitted in our country.

In such cases, you can file sexual harassment charges, para naman maeliminate ang mga instances of "chancing". (Well, for most filipinos, the best way is to give the guard a dressing down, right there and then, he he. Mas immediate and satisfying ang dating).

The mall is a private enterprise as such management has their own set of rules and policies. Their main goal is to gain profit by providing leases to tenants. As such they are required to provide security and maintenance to the mall. They should ensure also to provide a condusive atmosphere for shopping. Hindi sa minamaliit natin ang mahihirap pero if a mall is known to be frequented with lower class people, do u think people with money would even go there? If no moneyed people go to a mall, how would the tenants survice and in the end could cause the mall's demise. How many times have you ate at a jolibee branch with a glass wall facing the street. And while you are eating your chickenjoy, you see street kids, sticking their faces behind the glass wall looking at you and your meal. Would that be a good dining experience. Would you want to return to that restaurant? If that restaurant closes, mall is affected, employees will be laid off So diba malaking negative effect yun? So tama lang that mall implements its own rules. If they need to keep off undesirable people so be it.

philip_v
May 17th, 2008, 03:02 PM
Yes there should be a dress code, but a more relaxed one. I wouldn't go to the mall, which is 3 minutes away, wearing pants if I'd only get a blank DVD+R or whatever. Especially during summer. I rarely wear jeans during summer.

Would you guys like a taong-grasa to come into Megamall or Glorietta?

Kasi according to many of you, this is a democratic country.

So based on your concept of freedom and respect for all, you would not mind shopping in a mall where you can see a dirty man, wearing stinky clothes and reeking of perspiration?

Respect his democratic right to come as he pleases, 'ika nga.

So would you report a security guard to his superiors if the security guard refuses entry to the taong-grasa into Megamall or Glorietta?

How about beggars, mendicants and street children?

Should they be allowed inside Megamall or Glorietta?

Respect their human rights, sabi nyo. So the beggars, mendicants and street children should be let in, correct?

I love their sounds as well! That's why I fell in love with that place. But if you frequent it regularly, you'll get bored at some point. The magic will be lost. I'm not as excited going there as I do before. Even the majestic Manila Bay sunset now fails to bring some spark. Siguro dapat iwasan ko muna ang MoA for the next six months haha.

Filipinos flock to supersize malls

The SM Mall of Asia, in Pasay City, the Philippines, is one of a chain founded by Henry Sy, a Chinese immigrant who started with a shoe shop. (Enrique Soriano/Bloomberg News)

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/05/21/business/mall.php

MANILA: The two biggest shopping malls in the world are in China. But China does have a rival in the business of destination shopping - the notion that a shopping center should not be simply a place to purchase life's necessities, but should be big and spectacular, a source of daylong entertainment.

If you think it is the United States, the country where the shopping mall probably originated, think again.

On a promontory of reclaimed land jutting into Manila Bay is the sprawling Mall of Asia. It is a testament to the Filipino love of shopping. At 407,000 square meters, or 4.4 million square feet, it is the third biggest mall in the world, according to data compiled by Eastern Connecticut State University.

It doesn't stop there. The Philippines, one of the lowest-ranked countries in the world on the United Nations human development index, has 4 of the world's 11 biggest shopping malls.

All of them are owned by a company that was started 50 years ago by Henry Sy, a Chinese immigrant who founded a shoe shop. The company that began as Shoemart in a provincial town outside Manila is now the country's biggest mall operator, SM, and the Sy family has become the second wealthiest in the Philippines, according to Forbes magazine.

"Filipinos have a passion for shopping," said Teresita Sy, who with her four brothers and sister run a vast conglomerate that also has investments in banking, real estate and tourism. "We don't have a lot of purchasing power, but we love to shop."

On the back of the rapid growth of its shopping mall and department store business in the Philippines, SM has set its sights on a potentially richer prize. This year, the publicly listed SM Prime Holdings, which controls the retail assets, bought three malls in China that had been privately held by the Sy family. It is the first step in an ambitious plan to establish a nationwide network of SM malls in China.

"We would like to think we can grow 100 units in China - that is still the dream," said Teresita Sy, who is vice chairman of the family holding company, through which her family owns about 60 percent of the retail business.

But SM plans to move cautiously in the first phase of its expansion in China, opening one to three new malls a year. When SM got started in malls in the Philippines in the 1980s, it took the company 10 years to expand from 1 mall to 5 malls. It now has 30 malls spread across the country.

For now, SM is focused on tapping the growing disposable incomes of consumers in China's second-tier cities. In addition to the three malls already operating in Xiamen, Chengdu and Jinjiang, 83-year-old Henry Sy's birthplace, the company has one mall under construction and another under planning.

The markets SM is entering in China are in many ways not dissimilar to the customer base it has tapped in the Philippines.

With anchor tenants like Wal-Mart and its own SM-Laiya department store brand, the company is aiming at people in China who want to go to a mall for an experience but who demand value at the checkout line.

Andrew Ness, head of Asian research at the commercial real estate firm CBRE, said the markets SM is entering in China tend to be "middle class and not very prosperous." It is a "high risk, high return strategy," he said. But he added that the large malls SM builds in these areas help drive local economic activity.

"Their malls are so big they become a hub," he said. "They are creating their own opportunities."

The springboard enabling SM to take on the increasingly affluent Chinese shopper is the surprising strength of consumerism in the Philippines, where per capita gross domestic product for its 89 million people is about $1,700. Individually, Filipinos might not be big spenders, but they flock to the malls and purchase relatively cheap, low-margin goods in huge quantities.

On weekends at the Mall of Asia, which opened in 2006, crowds jostle in a vast expanse of retail arcades, cinemas, food halls and restaurants, as well as entertainment venues like an ice-skating rink, a bowling alley and a science expo. Up to a million people pass into the air-conditioned comfort of the mall on a Saturday or Sunday, escaping Manila's heat with their families.

It is a similar story a few kilometers away at SM City North Edsa, the world's sixth-biggest mall, and at two other malls in the Philippines, SM Megamall, ranked No. 7, and at SM City Cebu, No.11.

Domestic consumption has been the key driver of the Philippines' recent economic growth. Last year the economy expanded by 7.3 percent, the fastest rate in three decades.

The national spending spree has been fueled by transfers from overseas Filipino workers, which have risen from $6 billion in 2001 to $14.5 billion in 2007. The flood of money has been spent on everything from basic necessities to luxury items. Automobile sales jumped by 18.5 percent last year. Remittances have also contributed to a boom in residential housing construction.

The consumption-led growth has been a boon to retailing and services. Net profit for SM's retail business rose 10 percent last year to almost 6 billion pesos, or $140 million, on revenue that rose 16 percent to 15.3 billion pesos.

Alex Pomento, the head of research at Macquarie Securities in the Philippines, said an expected slowing of the economy this year and rising inflation are likely to cut into retail sales. But he said SM had weathered the frequent fluctuations of the country's economy in the past.

"The downside is always the macro economy rather than the company itself," he said. "They dominate most of the businesses they get into, which means they are highly dependent on where the economy goes."

The Philippines often ranks poorly in surveys of investor sentiment and ease of doing business. Its economy is ranked 92nd out of 157 in the Heritage Foundation's economic freedom index.

But while China might offer great growth potential, Teresita Sy argued that a low cost structure makes the Philippines more competitive for business than China.

"Compare a mall here and a mall abroad, the cost of doing business here is still cheaper," she said. "It will make you look at the Philippines again."

Still, the opportunities in China are enormous, Sy said.

SM's first China mall, which opened in Xiamen in 2001, was profitable within two to three years. It now has 100 percent occupancy.

The occupancy rate underscores one lesson SM has learned from the Philippines: When it comes to malls, bigger is better.

Sy said the company had just one regret about its showcase Mall of Asia.

"It is fully let," she said. "As a matter of fact, we should have made it bigger."

Why DOJ dismissed case vs. Ayala Land in Glorietta blast
By CARMELA FONBUENA
abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryID=119144

The Department of Justice (DOJ) did not give much weight to the evidence provided by the Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) that last year’s deadly blast in Makati city’s Glorietta 2 mall was caused by a bomb explosion. It favored the police theory that it was actually a gas explosion, resulting from the accumulation of methane and diesel—in critical levels—in the mall’s basement.

“The probability of a biogas explosion has been clearly established,” it said in the 51-page resolution released today.

But the DOJ absolved the mall owners, the Ayalas. Its reason is simple: “It is uncontroverted that the Makati Supermarkt Building is owned by the Makati Supermarket Corporation (MSC) not by Ayala Land Inc. (ALI), which are separate and distinct entities,” it said in the resolution. “None of the equipment in the [supermarket] basement is owned, supplied, or designed by ALI.”

DOJ dismissed the case versus Ayala Land engineers Marcelo Botanes, Jowell Velvez, and Arnel Gonzalez.

It indicted eight employees of the supermarket and its contractors for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries. They are Candelario Valdueza of the Makati Supermarket; Clifford Arriola, Joselito Buenaventura, Charlie Nepomuceno, Jonathan Ibuna, and Juan Ricafort of Marchem; and Ricardo Cruz and Miguel Velasco of Metaline. (The blast killed 11 and injured 108.)

Leased

DOJ argued that while the basement and delivery bay area—where the blast occurred—was erected on a land owned and managed by the Ayalas, this was leased to the supermarket management until 2011. “As owner of the commercial building, MSC is responsible, both by statute and contract, for the installation and maintenance of the building.”

DOJ blamed the “poor maintenance of the sewer/pump pits drain thereby allowing sewer (methane) gas to accumulate; storage of diesel fuel in the basement without any mechanical ventilation and exhaust system in place which increased the temperature in the basement that triggered the accumulation of diesel vapors/fumes; use of jumpers on safety fuse, presence of open switches, motor pumps, circuit breakers, and other possible igniters.”

Failure to inspect

The functions of ALI as the manager of the building, DOJ further said, is “clearly identified as being limited to the selection of tenants to ensure the appropriate commercial mix, conduct audit examinations relating to the rent due and payable from tenants, the billing and collection of rentals, and the administration of financial matters relative to the operation of the building.”

DOJ based this conclusion from the 1997 memorandum of agreement between MSC and the ALI.

Valdueza holds the position of assistant for projects, Office of the MSC President. “If only said respondent had exercised reasonable care and precaution in the discharge of his functions, the conditions or factors that contributed or triggered the biogas explosion at the basement of the Makati Supermarket could have been avoided,” the DOJ resolution said.

As to the Marchem employees, the DOJ resolution said that, “complainants report indicates that they have failed to maintain and inspect the said basement and supervise the maintenance personnel under them…..”

The Metaline engineers are “likewise liable for failure to properly install the air duct ventilation system and fire protection system of the MSC building.”

The panel of investigating prosecutors was composed of senior state prosecutors Leo Dacera, Emilia Victorio, and state prosecutors Grace Ruiz and Eden Wakay Valdes.

The latest trend in Mall development in the States is called the "Lifestyle Centers" that feature Open Air malls which have open streets, electric fountains, tailored gardens, trees, greeneries, landscaping, sculptures, and exude the feel of a resort village. An example of such mall is Americana located at Glendale California:

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/valley/la-fi-americana25apr25,0,2167553.story

I think Serendra comes close to this description. Mall of Asia has the combined feature of a mall enclosed in a building but at the same time features streets within the mall, fountains, and a resort location. Mall of Asia needs to upgrade on greeneries, landscaping, more statue/sculpture and probably a clock tower.

So the next mall development in the Philippines should gear towards the Open Air Space malls with the above mentioned features and amenities.

yes, Malls on beach resorts should veer away from the enclosed and massive type. Note that the ecological beauty of the beach must not be overtaken by the design of the mall.
It should complement the ecological beauty of our countryside. It should feature lots of open space, trees, gardens, trellis-type restaurants, spa facing the beach, and with a totally relaxed ambience.

Hi, I'm confused with the basis.

Per their website, South China Mall, (currently no. 1 according to Forbes magazine) has a floor area of 430,000 square meters and a building area of 890,000 square meters, however the ranking from Forbes magazine says 890,000 square meters of gross leasable area.

Anyway, Dubai will soon overtake all these malls.

boni high street concept is nice, hindi lang talaga bagay dito, too hot ang weather, sa gabi lang pwedeng puntahan. I also heard most of the stores there are not doing well.

Mukha nga syang airport, actually karamihan ng SM Malls mukhang airport. Boxy kasi.

^^ @Ronnie: Phase 1 of GB5 has already had its soft launch. Most of the phase 2 of GB5 will be on al fresco dining and higher high-end boutiques.

Stanleymalls, MOA is now no. 5 in the list in the world but soon to be overtaken by Dubai. I think the article as the 1st largest mall in Asia is correct.

List of the world's largest shopping malls. This is a list of the world's 20 largest shopping malls, based on gross leasable area (GLA) rather than total area.

I just forgot where I read it, but SM City Cebu should be at no. 11 in that list.

^ Nope, mas malaki pa talaga ang Glorietta. Although personally, mas gusto ko magshopping sa TriNoma.

Same here! :D

boni high street concept is nice, hindi lang talaga bagay dito, too hot ang weather, sa gabi lang pwedeng puntahan.

I agree. I never went to Boni High St. in the morning, neither early in the afternoon. It's too open eh. There's not much of covered walk ways. Ang init pa naman dito.

Yeah, SM City Cebu should be at no. 11 in that list according to the researcher but it shouldn't be in that list according to me.
