Waldenstrom October 3rd, 2008, 01:45 PM aba aba asan ang tropang trinoma ha? j/k ona October 3rd, 2008, 02:24 PM ^^na-convert muna temporarily to tropang SM NoE. Example: hindi cheap ang mapayapang kumpetisyon ng mga diehard fans ng La Salle at Ateneo sa UAAP seniors' basketball league, ganun din ang mga Kapuso at Kapamilya and so for TriNoma and SM NoE^_^ ona October 3rd, 2008, 04:33 PM ^^tama...passion yan ng mga tao. biruin mo kahit mahirap ang buhay sa Pinas masaya parin mga tao... stanleymalls October 3rd, 2008, 04:35 PM ^^ Dahil natural sa atin ang maging masaya. But TriNoma is performing very great since its public opening in May 16, 2007!^_^ stanleymalls October 3rd, 2008, 04:41 PM Ayan! All systems on-going! Enjoy the pics! Sa bagay TriNoma was actually designed to correct the design flaws of Glorietta & directly compete with SM's most profitable mall. hirolionheart October 3rd, 2008, 04:45 PM Ayan! So maaaring 4th quarter na natin makita ang soft re-launch ng SM NoE. stanleymalls October 3rd, 2008, 05:16 PM ÜBER EXCITED! ona October 3rd, 2008, 05:33 PM Excited din ako sa SM NoE - soon to be largest mall in the Philippines. stanleymalls October 3rd, 2008, 05:33 PM TriNoma actually performed better than expected. Sa bagay TriNoma was actually designed to correct the design flaws of Glorietta & directly compete with SM's most profitable mall. Oh? TriNoma adressed this problem by putting star attractions in the top floors (Sky-Garden, Cinema, Timezone, etc.) para dalawin din at maging mas balance foot traffic. evilgenius15 October 3rd, 2008, 06:14 PM ^^ Siguro itatapat nila ang opening sa Christmas Day. Sana. Eto daw: News The Greening of SM North EDSA Construction is now underway to create a 400-meter long “The Sky Garden Park” with a gross floor area of approximately 15,500 square meters and a "Sky-Garden" located at the top of the car park section of the New Annex Building. In "The Sky Garden Park", shoppers can stroll along a landscaped and covered path, pleasantly lined with tropical trees, flowering plants, and shrubs. It will stretch from one end of "The Annex" to the end of "The Block". A number of entryways will be constructed that leads to different parts of the mall. It will be decorated with a lagoon, an aviary, an amphitheater, cafés, specialty restaurants, and novelty shops. A waterfall will cascade from the Skygarden at level four down to "The Sky Garden Park" at the ground level facing EDSA— producing a piece of art that promises to create a calming and colorful scene, especially at night when various lights provide an added dimension to the falls and the pond beneath. Below the Skygarden will be a transport depot for buses and added parking space for shoppers. This is the first SM Supermall to add green elements in honor of the original SM North EDSA, being the very first in the Philippines. After construction and redevelopment, including the Skygarden and the Annex building expansion, SM North EDSA’s gross floor area will quadruple to 456,000 square meters from its original size, making it the country’s largest mall, surpassing SM Mall of Asia. SM City Annex set to open in November SM City North-EDSA's new Annex Building, is a 92,830-square-meter, six-level Annex, which will rise on the site of the old Annex building, was recently presented to tenants giving them a first look. It was designed to create an enjoyable and festive shopping experience, and to provide an entertainment environment. Design The exterior of the new Annex is a simple block clad in undulating perforated aluminum panels. The façade is interspersed by either glass or metal-clad cubes. The undulations of the cladding panels make for every dynamic composition. The eastern end of the Annex overlooking the Sky Garden Park will consist of a monumental glass wall, which will stretch to the whole height of this end wall. This creates a grand shop front from which the atrium, its scenic lifts, as well as various retail outlets and restaurants can be seen from The Sky Garden Park. The choice of aqua suggests an affinity with other SM malls, SM Megamall and SM Mall of Asia. In all, a dynamic composition is created aimed to give the mall a distinct architectural identity with a balance of dynamism and elegance. Inside tenants are arranged along the ribbon-like atrium with vertical circulation provided by escalators and lifts at opposite ends. Interiors are clean and modern, and centered around a curvilinear atrium, which stretches its length. Daylight is provided through a series of circular glass cones set into the ceiling, giving the interior a light, airy feeling. Tenant Mix The new Annex's tenant mix will include high-end retail, various dining establishments, a Cyberzone, a games arcade, and a bowling center, creating a cutting-edge mix of shopping and entertainment. Its lower ground floor will include leisure shops while its upper ground floor will consist of general services. Nourishment and indulgence shops will be on the second floor, while specialty shops and fashion finds complete the third floor. The biggest Cyberzone is the attraction of the fourth and fifth floors, while an upcoming call center will be on the sixth floor. Cyberzone One of the new Annex' major attractions is the Cyberzone, and its fourth and fifth floors are dedicated entirely to the virtual world. The Cyberzone at SM City North EDSA will be the largest tech center in all SM malls, and a one-stop haven for the tech-savvy shoppers. With over a hundred shops and tech service centers, it will include tenants offering hardware and software solutions, mobile communications, Internet and gaming services. The Cyberzone is envisioned to be the center of the technology lifestyle: more tech, more brands, and more shops. traveljunkie October 4th, 2008, 07:49 AM Are they going to rename SM NoE? We have SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia...so dapat iba rin for SM NoE. :D traveljunkie October 4th, 2008, 07:51 AM SM Garden Park Mall ona October 4th, 2008, 10:49 AM ^^Gusto ko SM SUPERBLOCK - "super" being the first sm supermall, tapos "block" kasi yung mga bldgs. resemble blocks. alexcerado October 4th, 2008, 12:02 PM Are they going to rename SM NoE? We have SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia...so dapat iba rin for SM NoE. :D i hope they'll not. sayang ang 21 years. sm north edsa remains sm north edsa, sm city and sm west in the hearts of the filipinos in the philippines and in the world. Sinjin P. October 4th, 2008, 12:03 PM or simply SM Supermall. Sinjin P. October 4th, 2008, 12:04 PM Ang original name naman ng SM City North EDSA ay The SM City 'diba? I think they should restore that name. Very fitting naman kasi: a city within a city, hehehe. alexcerado October 4th, 2008, 12:21 PM Ang original name naman ng SM City North EDSA ay The SM City 'diba? I think they should restore that name. Very fitting naman kasi: a city within a city, hehehe. sorry, i don't know.. but maybe they called the mall as sm city because SM City North Edsa, ang mga pinoy, they love abbreviating long words, kaya sm city. when I was in QC, many people called sm north as "sm west" akala ko nga at first sm west eh sm megamall, sm north pala. sm west daw, kasi nasa west avenue. medyo bata pa ako at hindi pa ako buhay sa mga panahong nagbukas ang sm north. nagkaroon lang ako ng alam because of reading write ups and articles in the internet. tnx talaga sa internet, at marami akong alam  atsaka matanong lang, bakit may call center sa 6th level ng sm north? sana ginawa nalang nilang sm cinemas. do a mall needs a call center? i don't think so... ona October 4th, 2008, 12:24 PM ^^O kaya SM Capital City - kasi marami ng SM Cities tapos capital nila yung original...jeje stanleymalls October 4th, 2008, 12:37 PM ^^Gusto ko SM SUPERBLOCK - "super" being the first sm supermall, tapos "block" kasi yung mga bldgs. resemble blocks. SM SUPERBLOCK seems powerful! Pwede din! Yah. The SM City was its very 1st name. Unless gagawin talaga nilang city within a city with the already-bought lands sa likod. The Grass Residences, tapos yung parang undending expansion ng NoE.... o san ka pa? They also need those call centers para extra income na din for the mall. ona October 4th, 2008, 12:43 PM ^^ang problema kahit i-rename nilang "The SM City", people will still call it SM City (North Edsa)...kasi kailangan i-distinguish yung location nitong SM City from the others. Pwede ko kasing sabihin. I'm going to "The SM City" pero di talaga dun sa North Edsa kundi to another SM City in Bacoor. From a marketing stand-point it will just confuse people kaya di advisable yang "The SM City". cq40 October 4th, 2008, 03:39 PM As far as I Know SM North Edsa's first name is ShoeMart or simply SM like SM Makati. Then it was expanded, it became ShoeMart City or SM City. SM Centerpoint came along, then SM Megamall. then all other malls like SM Southmall etc...SM noticed they don't have enough names to call their malls so they adopted the location of that mall, 1st to be is SM City-Cebu. That's when they run out of creativity on naming so they applied SM City to all of their big malls. SM Supercenter to Small Malls and Save More to Stand-alone Supermarkets. SM Centerpoint became SM City Sta. Mesa, SM City became SM City North Edsa and so forth. Only these malls retained the pseudonyms of the past: SM Megamall - it's iconic mega-like structure, SM Southmall dunno i guess las pinas is not appealing lol, SM Mall Of Asia, their cream of the crop Same with Small players like Waltermart, NCCC and Gaisano followed suit. The Ayala's have few malls but great malls so they don't have difficulty naming them...so their malls have cutesy names and sometimes tossing the location. Robinson's names their malls in mixed form, Putting a creative name and the place next to it. ;) hirolionheart October 4th, 2008, 03:54 PM As far as I Know SM North Edsa's first name is ShoeMart like SM Makati. Ayala Malls, cool din yung mga names kahit konti pa lang malls nila, tulad na lang ng tinatayong "Abreeza" sa Davao City^_^ ona October 4th, 2008, 03:54 PM ^^IMO di na kailangan i-rename ang SM City North Edsa - it's significance and grandeur will speak of itself. SM Mall of Asia - "no other mall comes close", TriNoma - "Where All Come Together". Ano kaya sa SM NoE, pwede ring "The Original Is Still The Best". hirolionheart October 4th, 2008, 04:02 PM ^^IMO di na kailangan i-rename ang SM City North Edsa - it's significance and grandeur will speak of itself. SM Mall of Asia - "no other mall comes close", TriNoma - "Where All Come Together". Ano kaya sa SM NoE, pwede ring "The Original Is Still The Best". Ang alam kong tagline ng SM NoE dati ay: "It's not just a Center, it's a City", kaso kasi marami na ngayong SM City [insert a location], hehehe^_^ ona October 4th, 2008, 04:06 PM ^^pagkakaalam ko sa nationwide TV Ad nila noon "It's waiting for you" hirolionheart October 4th, 2008, 04:08 PM ^^pagkakaalam ko sa nationwide TV Ad nila noon "It's waiting for you" Eto, hindi ko na matandaan, meron na kasing SM City North EDSA, ako wala pa sa mundo, hehehe^_^ feistyradical October 4th, 2008, 04:09 PM I agree. Dapat sana nakabukod sa mall, pwedeng malapit na lang dito... ona October 4th, 2008, 04:18 PM Eto, hindi ko na matandaan, meron na kasing SM City North EDSA, ako wala pa sa mundo, hehehe^_^ sayang at di mo nakita yung commercial nila noon for SM City NoE. lagi itong laman ng telebisyon at may CG graphics narin w/c for that time was really very expensive - it could have been the most expensive commercial campaign in the history of SM. And the rest is history. :applause: evilgenius15 October 4th, 2008, 05:03 PM ^^ ako rin, hehehe... traveljunkie October 4th, 2008, 05:08 PM Kala ko pa naman they will have a floor solely for furnishings, home decor and art galleries on the new Annex. I remember my dad telling us na puro talahib ata yung area na yon when Mr. Sy decided to put up a mall there. It was solely his vision. Who would've known it would be a mega success? Masasabi nating SM North Edsa was born out of fire. Kaya siguro parang Phoenix ang SM NoE, laging nag-eevolve & it just keeps getting better. In a few more weeks masisilayan na ang biggest SM mall evolution so far... stickerPROXY18 October 4th, 2008, 08:44 PM Kung magrerelaunch ang SM NoE, magbabalik narin kaya ang....... SM group plans more hypermarkets BUDGET ALLOCATION SEEN TO REACH P750 MILLION (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/10062008/companies01.html) By Honey Madrilejos-Reyes Reporter THE SM group is spending between P450 million and P750 million to build additional SM Hypermarkets in 2009. In an interview, SM Hypermarket executive vice president Robert Kwee said the company plans to put up three to five branches at an investment cost of P150 million per location. “Actually, that is our target every year,” he said, saying the additional hypermarkets will be located in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. The group expects to end the year with 13 hypermarkets, with the last two in Rosales, Pangasinan and Baliuag, Bulacan set to open soon. Kwee said all the branches are delivering “good numbers” in terms of sales. “We are growing double-digit in sales,” he said without details. SM Hypermarket was a concept started by the Sy family in the late 1990s to take advantage of the growing consumer demand for retail convenience. The said format started in Europe, which combines a supermarket with a department store and a number of independent stalls offering food, entertainment, wellness services, among others. “The market seems to have warmed up to this new format in retail merchandising which offers a balanced mix of food and nonfood items,” said Kwee. The existing SM Hypermarkets are located in Bicutan, Clark, Marilao, Mall of Asia Complex, Molino, Muntinlupa, North Edsa, Pasig-C5, Sucat, Taytay and Valenzuela. evilgenius15 October 6th, 2008, 03:20 PM ^^ baka magkaroon na rin ng hypermarket sa sm fairview, hehehe... tapos mawawala na ang supermarket, yehey! hirolionheart October 6th, 2008, 03:26 PM ^^ baka magkaroon na rin ng hypermarket sa sm fairview, hehehe... tapos mawawala na ang supermarket, yehey! I found this article somewhat amusing... :) Ever Gotesco malls highlight ‘one-stop-shopping’ convenience in new marketing campaign (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business%20As%20Usual&p=49&type=2&sec=39&aid=2008100526) Monday, October 6, 2008 Malls are virtually a “second home” for most Filipinos. A national survey revealed that around 80 percent of the population has made it a habit to visit a shopping center, with 36 million people going to the mall once or twice a month. Malls are almost always crowded, especially during weekends as a “one-stop shop” for fulfilling various consumer needs: to buy food and other household essentials, meet with colleagues or friends, eat or watch a movie, pay the bills, hear Mass, or even just to walk around and enjoy respite from the heat at the fully-airconditioned venues. It is exactly this aspect for providing the needs of its target market which has worked well for the success and resiliency of Ever Gotesco malls, an established name in the industry with more than 30 years’ experience of running the “one-stop shop” complex. Even with the recent economic crises, Ever Gotesco malls has maintained its number of branches around Metro Manila, its loyal patrons still intact and highly valued as members of the community or neighborhood. Ever Gotesco malls pioneered the concept of the “community mall” where the immediate vicinity benefits from the shopping convenience offered at strategically located branches, specifically in Ortigas, Pasig; Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City; Monumento/Caloocan; Recto, Manila. This year, the company launched a new campaign in Ortigas and Commonwealth aimed at strengthening their brand identity, and inviting everyone to their stores with the tagline: “Mag Ever Tayo.” “When we started 30 years ago, we’ve always had the Filipino family in mind,” said Joel Go, president of Ever Gotesco Malls. “It is important for us to be the provider of family needs, so that when they need anything, they can just go to our mall which is located right within their neighborhood or community. They don’t have to travel far and waste valuable time, money and effort.” “We want the statement ‘Mag Ever Tayo’ to be present in every home that surrounds our malls,” said Chie S. Arao, corporate marketing manager of Ever Gotesco Malls. “Since we are practically part of their neighborhood, we want our clients residing within the 8-km radius of the store to associate us with their essential needs such as groceries, play time, household needs, and even for various occasions such as birthdays, celebrations, and other situations that take place in every home. Ever shall always be there to provide their basic needs,” Chie explained. Go added that another advantage of Ever Gotesco malls is its thrust for being market-oriented, manifested through the line-up of tenants gathered to address the needs of their clientele. “We are confident to say that we have a better feel of what our market needs. We certainly have shops with popular brand names mixed with the more affordable ones.” For instance, in Ortigas, which is a family community composed of subdivision dwellers from Ortigas, Pasig, Cainta, and parts of Rizal, we have more of family-friendly tenants like amusement centers, play areas, entertainment areas, a big Jollibee outlet, a medical clinic, and basic services like a barber shop on the ground floor, among others. We tailor-fit the list of tenants according to what our market needs and not just randomly assign any shop there,” he explained. On the other hand, the Commonwealth branch, which is located near sprawling middle-income communities in the areas of Commonwealth Avenue, Fairview, and Batasan – offers three levels of the department store, the biggest supermarket and amusement center for families and government employees residing in the area. It also has a big number of cellphone shops to cater to the young market and BPO workers, and a tiangge or flea market catering to the needs of the masses within the vicinity. The recent economic crunch felt all over the world has also emerged as an advantage for Ever Gotesco malls, Chie noted. “Everyone is trying all their means to save, so for us, it’s an opportunity to strengthen our key points, which are affordability and convenience. You can get your basic needs from us, so you don’t have to spend money on gas or transportation because we’re just a walk away from your neighborhood.” As part of the “Mag Ever Tayo” campaign, the Ortigas and Commonwealth branches will launch marketing efforts to reach their surrounding communities. The malls are expected to participate in the community events and reach out to their neighbors as a valuable member of society. Apparently, the rest of Asia thinks the same way after voting Manila as one of the top10 shopping destinations in the region. Manila ranked fifth in the 2008 online poll conducted by Smart Travel Asia, edging out places such as Tokyo, Japan; Shanghai, China; Hanoi, Vietnam; Seoul, Korea; Dubai, United Arab Emirates and Shenzhen, China. Hong Kong topped the poll with 25 percent of the vote followed closely by Bangkok, Thailand with 24 percent. Singapore trailed in third with 11.8 percent and Kuala Lumpur scrambled into fourth place with eight percent of the vote. According to Smart Travel Asia, the poll results reflect the online voters' "substantial hands-on travel experience, word-of-mouth at dinnertime chats, as well as an idea of the brand drawn from advertising and editorial exposure in the media, which is mostly online." Smart Travel Asia is the region’s only dedicated online travel magazine with over one million readers worldwide. Vijay Verghese, Smart Travel Asia editor, said voters in the annual travel poll took an average 15.5 annual air trips and earned $175,162 with roughly 60 percent based in Asia, 20 percent in UK/Europe and 20 percent in the United States. The Philippines has three of the world's 10 largest shopping centers, two of them in the capital, Manila. SM Prime, the largest mall operator in the Philippines, said 2.5 million people still visit their 30 shopping centers across the country every week. A study done by Nielsen Media Research said around 80 percent of the country's population go to shopping centers and around 36 million people visit shopping plazas once or twice a month. Boracay, Palawan are top vacation spots The same online poll also showed Boracay Island and Palawan province in the Philippines as among the best holiday destinations in Asia this year. The 2008 online poll showed Boracay and Palawan ranking seventh and eighth respectively in the top 10 holiday destinations in Asia. Palawan shared eighth place with Chiang Mai, Thailand. Both Philippine destinations were jointly ranked seventh in the 2007 Smart Travel Asia poll. Boracay is famous for its white sand beaches, which make it a popular tourist spot in the country. On the other hand, Palawan is rated by National Geographic Traveler magazine as the best island destination in East and Southeast Asia region in 2007, and the 13th best island in the world having "incredibly beautiful natural seascapes and landscapes." Some of the most famous tourist spots in Palawan are the Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, Coron Bay in Busuanga and the El Nido Marine Reserve Park. The otherworldly Bali, Indonesia was chosen Asia's top holiday destination in the Smart Travel Asia poll for the third straight year followed by Phuket, Thailand; Kerala, India; the island republic of Maldives; shopping mecca Hong Kong and Bangkok, Thailand. Angkor, Cambodia ranked ninth place while Koh Samui, Thailand and Rajasthan, India both shared tenth place. as of 10/08/2008 5:57 PM Anu ba yan? BAkit hindi tayo man lang ang No. 3? From the desert metropolis of Dubai to the industrial hub of Chicago, developers from around the world are reshaping malls into environmentally responsible structures through green retrofitting – the process of making an existing building more eco-friendly through structural improvements or additions. This trend is becoming more popular among retail establishments because of its many upsides. It promises lower disruption as compared to rebuilding from the ground up, lower energy costs because of energy-efficient equipment, higher occupant satisfaction brought by the aesthetic of natural interiors, and reduced impact to Mother Nature due to less CO2 production. Here in the Philippines, the Ayala Malls Group is spearheading the eco-friendly mall movement by green retrofitting two of its malls—Shops at Serendra and Greenbelt 5—with sustainable cooling technology. Sustainable Cooling Both Ayala malls have adopted the Ice-Cel Thermal Energy Storage (TES) System, an innovative air conditioning technology that cuts down energy consumption by up to 40%, according to a report in the September 2004 edition of ASHRAE Journal. By significantly reducing their energy consumption, these Ayala malls are contributing to a more sustainable world, since numerous studies correlate higher energy consumption to higher greenhouse gases that cause global warming. The secret behind Ice-Cel System’s energy-saving feature is the creation and storage of cooling at night. This stored cooling is then used during daytime operations to provide air conditioning for the malls. By shifting ice production from daytime to nighttime, less energy is consumed, electricity cost is reduced, and less greenhouse gases are emitted back in the atmosphere. The technology behind Ice-Cel is the crowning glory of Dunham-Bush International Sales and Services, Inc. (DBI), the Philippine distributor of Dunham-Bush, the world-renowned manufacturer of energy-efficient air conditioning systems, which include Ice-Cel tanks, screw chillers, pumps and cooling towers, and its proprietary micro computer control system. hirolionheart October 10th, 2008, 10:51 AM Ayala Malls go green Friday, October 10, 2008 Eco-friendly malls are fast becoming the standard bearers for sustainability in the architectural world. I’ve seen it firsthand in my little nephews and nieces, who learn these two letters way ahead of anything else. MY OWN memories of SM hark back to the old SM Cubao days when it was a two-storey building standing beside an old hamburger joint whose name escapes me now (Gloria's? I honestly can't remember). Before that, my mom would often bring us to SM Echague, but my recollection of those days are dimmer, unlike the days of my Robbie Rabbit craze (available at the ground floor, accessories), the times my sisters and I descended the large staircase in SM Cubao like pint-sized debutantes decked in new finery, and even the smell of those luscious hamburgers we ended getting after every shopping date. Memories of childhood are often most vivid, colored as they are with innocence and happiness. And of course, I still remember Ms. Lucy Arcaina and Mr. Javier of SM Cubao. Their kindness and patience to their little clients set the bar for how well we wanted to be treated as adult consumers and customers. No wonder, then, that when SM North EDSA opened in 1985, the year my husband and I graduated from a certain high school in Agham Road and entered college, this would become a frequent place of rendezvous among our friends. SM NE defined our mall experience. Where once we went to department stores for a singular purpose, this first SM supermall provided us with more choices for dining, shopping, and entertainment than anything else before. A few years later, SM NE would metamorphose from hangout to date place. This was where my husband and I indulged in the rituals of courtship while feasting on lasagna and chicken a la king at the Cafe Elysee, where we would pore over books at National Bookstore, and where he and I would watch our first movie as a couple ("Platoon," if you should know), and many, many more after it. In 1993, we started a family, and by then, SM NE had become part of the landscape of our lives. A day after I was discharged from the hospital delivery of our firstborn, I was seen hobbling around SM NE's Infants' Department, still wearing loose maternity clothes, swaddled in bandages and a "bigkis," and cradling a painful C -section, but absolutely in baby heaven. What SM (and SM NE, in particular) has been to my family has never been more acutely felt or understood than when our lives were touched by a special blessing. In truth, I think of my family as both ordinary and extraordinary. We are ordinary in the sense that our family of four (rather, mother, two sons) live a most conventional lifestyle. And yet, we are extraordinary at the same time, because, unlike many "normal" families, ours is one of more than 400,000 Filipino families with autism in their lives. When my son was diagnosed in 1996, we knew little about autism. Suddenly, even every day, simple things became complicated. The more we met with the challenges of living with it, the more overwhelmed we were of the changes in our lives. And yet, despite our son's difficulties, we strove to keep as close to normal as possible our routines as a family. And like any other ordinary, "normal” family, we went to the mall with the children. My son is nonverbal. Even today, at a month short of 14 years, he has A very limited language, mostly one syllable utterances for the most common words: "e" for help, "ma" for mama, and 'ha" for hi. Language still remains one of his biggest deficits, and to help him communicate with us, we use picture cards. Long before the Internet and the digital camera entered Our lives, we used picture cards made from laminated cardboard and magazine cutouts. One of his favorite cards was a simple white board with two blue letters: SM. Often, when he was feeling antsy or unsettled, he would hand us this card and ask to be brought to SM NE. lt was if by going there, he was reliving some pleasurable experience that gave him joy. His favorite part of SM NE was the old Super Sale Club. Its wide aisles and extra large carts made shopping enjoyable, and with the years of frequenting the supermarket, most employees knew us by sight. Years before all SM employees were given training on the handling of special kids (in collaboration with Autism Society Philippines), these kind people already seemed to know what to do. They would smile at Alphonse, wave at him, and would give us permission to let him eat one of his purchases even before we got to the checkout counter. He loved being part of good people, and he would often display his happiness with loud shrieks and yells. Most nights, he would request to ride the A car with his dad. Often, just the sight of the billboards would be met with squeals of glee. He would literally body-hop for joy, bouncing in the car's seat, rocking the entire vehicle with his body's overt movements. These days, while we still miss the old Super Sale Club, we enjoy the long walks we can take at The Block in the early morning as soon as the mall is opened. There, Alphonse, his father, brother, and I can shop or browse or simply take a stroll away from the crowds. I've often read that SM NE is by far one of the most successful branches of this mall chain, and with good reason. We are part of the "masa" who feel like SM is an extension of their home. For within its welcoming walls, even autism has a place in ordinary, everyday life. A first look at this exciting new lifestyle area was recently previewed at the site in Ortigas Center. The 16,000 sqm addition to the existing Megamall is located over Doña Julia Vargas Avenue, and when completed with fully bridge the gap between Mega A and B. With Megamall being a linear development that spans more than half a kilometer, the Atrium is envisioned to be a center of respite and relaxation. Upscale retail shops and restaurants are planned around a circular atrium with an area of 452 sqm. Access to the center is designed to offer an air of drama and surprise. Off the existing bridgeway, the visitor approaches the center through a low ceiling hallway that widens toward the cylindrical skylight. Dynamic non-concentric circles on the floor are achieved with the application of yellow tiles of varied hues. An equally dynamic skylight design matches the non-concentric circles in the floor. The curved patterns ripple out beyond the atrium area on both floors and ceilings to great consistency and harmony to the general look of the center. The deep end of fifth level of the SM Megamall Atrium will be the site of the 1,585 sqm Chapel of the Eucharistic Lord. This grand chapel with a separate adoration chapel has a modern design with the Eucharist as the focal point. This is highlighted in the neo-classical retablo or altar with the crucified Christ at the center, which is in sharp contrast to the modern theme of the rest of the chapel. The color scheme of the area is earth inspired with a neutral palette. Finishes are similar to stones used in the Roman times, which gives the chapel a structurally sound impression with a soft and warm approach. Wood in its natural oil finish is the most common material, which will be used in chapel. hirolionheart October 11th, 2008, 03:36 AM SM City Annex set to open in November Source: Phil Star SM City North-EDSA's new Annex Building, which is scheduled to open in November, was recently presented to tenants giving them a first look at the exciting redevelopment and expansion of SM's first supermall. When SM City North-EDSA opened in November 1985, the country was in the middle of a major political and economic crisis, and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, as SM celebrates its 50th anniversary with 31 supermalls all over the Philippines, it returns to its roots with the redevelopment of the mall that started it all. The new Annex highlights the initial phase of the mall's redevelopment, which began with the opening of The Block in 2006. The new 92,830-square-meter, six-level Annex, which will rise on the site of the old Annex building, was designed to create an enjoyable and festive shopping experience, and to provide an entertainment environment. It is also an iconic symbol in Metro Manila's rapidly changing and growing cityscape and community. The exterior of the new Annex is a simple block clad in undulating perforated aluminum panels. In the context of the total redevelopment, the façade treatment is carried over to the Main Mall and The Block. The façade is interspersed by either glass or metal-clad cubes. The undulations of the cladding panels make for every dynamic composition. The eastern end of the Annex overlooking the park will consist of a monumental glass wall, which will stretch to the whole height of this end wall. This creates a grand shop front from which the atrium, its scenic lifts, as well as various retail outlets and restaurants can be seen from the park. The design merges the indoor and the outdoor. The choice of aqua suggests an affinity other SM malls, Megamall and Mall of Asia. In all, a dynamic composition is created aimed to give the mall a distinct architectural identity with a balance of dynamism and elegance. Inside tenants are arranged along the ribbon-like atrium with vertical circulation provided by escalators and lifts at opposite ends. Interiors are clean and modem, and centered around a curvilinear atrium, which stretches its length. Daylight is provided through a series of circular glass cones set into the ceiling, giving the interior a light, airy feeling. The new Annex's tenant mix will include high-end retail, various dining establishments, a Cyberzone, a games arcade, and a bowling center, creating a cutting-edge mix of shopping and entertainment. One of the new Annex' major attractions is the Cyberzone, and its fourth and fifth floors are dedicated entirely to the virtual world. The Cyberzone at SM City North-EDSA will be the largest tech center in all SM malls, and a one-stop haven for the tech-savvy shoppers. With over a hundred shops and tech service centers, it will include tenants offering hardware and software solutions, mobile communications, Internet and gaming services. The Cyberzone is envisioned to be the center of the technology lifestyle: more tech, more brands, and more shops. Plans for the new Annex as well as the rest of SM City North-EDSA were revealed during the Tenants Preview. One of the highlights of the program was a presentation of the SM City North-EDSA Experience as narrated by the mall's pioneer tenants. The event was attended by the Annex's prospective tenants, who were welcomed by SM officials led by SM prime Holdings president Hans T. Sy, SCMC president Annie Garcia, VP for Leasing Daisy Chua, and A VP for operations Bien Mateo. With the new Annex opening in November, as well as the upgrading of its popular main mall, SM City North-EDSA is all set to establish new benchmarks in the shopping world. Given the comprehensive and exciting retail mix, its modem interiors, and eye-catching iconic facades, the mall becomes an exciting and modern destination for mall visitors in the metropolis and nearby provinces. hirolionheart October 11th, 2008, 03:37 AM Mall-crazy Manila among Asia’s shopping meccas: poll By DAVID DIZON, 9 Oct 2008 Source: abs-cbnNEWS.com Every Filipino knows that Manila is a good place as any to shop. Apparently, the rest of Asia thinks the same way after voting Manila as one of the top 10 shopping destinations in the region. Vijay Verghese, Smart Travel Asia editor, said voters in the annual travel poll took an average 15.5 annual air trips and earned US$ 175,162 with roughly 60 percent based in Asia, 20 percent in UK/Europe and 20 percent in the United States. The Philippines has three of the world's 10 largest shopping centers, two of them in the capital, Manila. SM Prime, the largest mall operator in the Philippines, said 2.5 million people still visit their 30 shopping centers across the country every week. A study done by Nielsen Media Research said around 80 percent of the country's population go to shopping centers and around 36 million people visit shopping plazas once or twice a month. nayki October 11th, 2008, 04:02 AM http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h141/oboi_1/moapark02.jpg This is the sensor. (ALI) and SM Prime Holdings (SMPH), expect to end the year on a positive note despite the prevailing global financial crunch. Next year, however, could present a different story. In an interview over the weekend, ALI president Jaime Ayala said the company is still seeing good growth this year as shown by strong sales of residential products, particularly the affordable to middle-income segments. “The trend is still quite strong overall, especially in our Alveo and Avida projects. Sales of the Ayala Land Premiere, on the other hand, have dropped partially because of the OFW sales in the US, which is down significantly, and the fact that we don’t have much inventory available anymore,” he said. Before the global financial debacle, sales to the US account for close to 50 percent of ALI’s total foreign sales. Now, this number has been reduced to 25 percent. “Fortunately, our sales in the Middle East are going very strong and is up 70 percent in the first nine months. And a lot of that went to the Avida products,” he said. While he admits that 2009 would be a challenging year, he said ALI would definitely finish on schedule its existing projects. “As for the new projects, we will have to see how the global situation plays out. It is hard to tell where 2009 will be headed. A lot of it depends on confidence. Right now, people are a bit rattled despite the fact that many of the underlying drivers in the Philippines remain to be pretty good,” Ayala said. For his part, SMPH executive vice president and chief finance officer Jeffrey Lim said the performance of the group’s retail and shopping mall businesses is expected to continue to be upbeat this year. “We would still be okay, especially this fourth quarter, with the onset of the holiday season. But 2009 could be challenging. However, we would still continue to expand and build more shopping malls,” he said. It cannot be denied that the country’s property sector is being sustained by the reliable foreign-exchange remittances of overseas Filipino workers who buy residential properties, as well as bullish prospects of the office sector, largely dictated by demands from business-process outsourcing companies and the retail sector. The Philippines has also one of the lowest mortgages to Gross Domestic Product ratios in the world at 2 percent. hirolionheart October 14th, 2008, 01:07 AM Pioneers share life with SM By , 13 Oct 2008 Source: Philippine Star SM City North-Edsa was the mall that started it all and changed Filipino lifestyles forever. For many of us to whom malling has become a way of life, it’s hard to imagine the circumstances how SM founder and chairman Henry Sy Sr.’s decision to open the mall was a big risk during that time. In 1985, the country was in the midst of a major political and economic crisis brought about by the assassination of Senator Ninoy Aquino. Inflation was soaring at double-digit level, a huge capital flight and a lot of uncertainty. The fact that the mall seemed to be in the middle of nowhere fueled doomsday predictions. But Sy saw it differently. Instead of a road to nowhere, he saw a crossroads linking the metro and provincial areas. Instead of a crisis, he saw an opportunity to serve more customers. During his buying trips to the US during the 1950s and 60s, Sy had seen how the suburbs had grown from the East to West coast, each with a shopping mall as its center, and from that time knew that this would be possible in the Philippines. The rest, as they say, is history. As SM City North-Edsa today prepares for yet another transformation beginning with the opening of the new Annex later this year, some of the mall’s pioneer tenants share with us the reasons why they took the risk that time with Sy. They also share with us how they have grown with SM, and why they will continue to be part of the mall as it renovates. MANELS Opened November 12, 1985 Why they chose to open at North-EDSA: “Tessie Sy-Coson invited me and some other colleagues in the retail industry to have a tour of the mall as it was being built and gave me prime space,” recalls Manels chairman Manuel Siggaoat. “While I was apprehensive because of the crisis during that time, this was overcome by my experience working with SM — its track record in Makati, and the all out support of the mall’s management.” How they have grown with SM? “Sales were good from the time we opened, and I remember that the mall even had to extend its closing hours to 9:00 and 10:00 PM to accommodate the many customers. We now have 42 stores all over the Philippines, 18 of which are at SM.” Why they will continue to be part of the North-EDSA transformation: “We have a dynamic relationship, and I want to be part of the new mall, just as I was part of North-EDSA the first time it opened. JOLLIBEE Opened 1986 Why they chose to open at North-EDSA: We’ve had a long, solid relationship with SM for so many years,” says Jollibee president William Tan. “I remember the time I was scheduled to meet Henry Sy Sr. about opening a branch at SM City North-EDSA. I was surprised that they had scheduled the meeting at SM Echague at 12 midnight. We went as were asked to and were shocked to see Sy still in the office with his staff at that time. I was also impressed and touched when Tessie-Sy Coson who was heavy with her first child at the time took time to tour me around the construction site and show me the space SM was providing. We were amazed at the SM management’s dedication to work and thought that despite the odds, the mall would be a success.” How they have grown with SM: “We have more than 30 Jollibee outlets in its malls and supercenters. We have a mutually beneficial relationship with SM.” Why they will continue to be part of the SM City North-EDSA transformation: “We will always remain committed to support SM in its malls in the Philippines and overseas.” RICKY REYES Opened November 12, 1985 Why he chose to open at North-EDSA: “I’m a very adventurous businessman,” says Ricky Reyes, who founded his popular chain of hair and beauty salons. “Besides, I could see the trend leading to shopping malls.” How he has grown with SM: “I was a pioneer tenant at SM City North-EDSA opening the same time as the Department Store and Supermarket, and have grown as SM has grown. Today, I have salons in almost SM Malls — except those in Sucat, Batangas, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro.” Why he will continue to be part of the SM City North-EDSA transformation: “It’s because of my loyalty to Henry Sy Sr. whom I fondly call Tatang. I remember when SM City North-EDSA first opened, he would be in the mall every other day. He would often visit my salon and our interactions became learning sessions for me. For me, Mr. Sy is not only a business icon, but someone who has become very much like a father to me.” NATIONAL BOOKSTORE Opened April 11, 1986 Why they chose to open at North-EDSA: “My mother in law, National Bookstore founder Socorro Ramos and Mr. Henry Sy, Sr. had known each other for sometime as they both had stores downtown,” says National Bookstore president Precy Ramos. “He invited us to be part of the mall, and we agreed.” How they have grown with SM: “ We have been able to grow together and today 30 of our 100 branches are at SM.” Why they will continue to be part of the SM City North-EDSA transformation: “We are happy to be part of the new SM City North-EDSA the way we were the first time it opened.” FRENCH BAKER Opened September 1989 Why they chose to open at North-EDSA: “Before I thought of investing in French Baker, our family was already supplying bread to the SM Supermarket,” says French Baker president Johnlu Koa. “Deciding to join SM was not difficult as I’ve known the Sy brothers, especially Herbert, very well. I knew it would work because I’ve done my homework and studied market opportunities.” How they grew with SM: “I was one of the first tenants at the old SM City Annex. During that time, the crises were different - brownouts and coup attempts, but I was given much support and encouragement by the SM management. I hope that I will have 40 stores by the end of the year, and am happy that 90 percent of these are at SM.” Why they will continue to be part of SM City North-EDSA’s transformation: “Putting up a store at SM makes it very accessible and convenient for customers. Having worked with SM for 20 years has made us aware of the vision of SM Founder Henry Sy, Sr. to always be innovative and up to date. We are happy to be part and share this vision.” SPORTSHOUSE Opened December 1985 Why they chose to open at North-EDSA: “We believed in the mall concept,” says Sportshouse president Mars Chua. “ I vividly remember our opening day at SM City North-Edsa, which was graced by celebrities, PBA players, sporstscasters and sports enthusiasts. We dressed our mannequins in sports attire and were surprised that shoppers were having their picture taken with those mannequins.” How they grew with SM: “We have around 32 stores nationwide, 22 of which are at SM.” Why they will continue to be part of SM City North-EDSA’s transformation: : I am very grateful to SM especially to Mr. Sy for all the support and encouragement through the years. Wherever SM goes, we are looking forward to be part of the group.” Some of SM City North-EDSA’s other pioneer tenants include McDonald’s, Max’s, Goldilocks, Dimensione, Magic, Ideal Vision, Fabric Warehouse, and Multi Time, each one with their own SM story, each looking forward to open new stores as SM City North-EDSA undergoes its transformation. hirolionheart October 14th, 2008, 01:08 AM SM Prime to open two more malls in China, 14 more locally By Marites S. Villamor, 13 Oct 2008 Source: BusinessWorld CEBU CITY, Philippines — Mall operator SM Prime Holdings, Inc. plans to open one or two more malls in China even as it continues to expand its mall network in the Philippines over the next five years. Expansion in China would be initially slow as the company tries to build its brand, strengthen its organization and gather financial strength, SM Prime President Hans T. Sy said. "Our China direction mirrors our growth story," Mr. Sy said on the sidelines of a project launch. He noted that when the company went public in 1995 it had only four malls. The company now has 31, but the last 17 malls were built in the last five years, he pointed out. Last week, the mall operator launched its SM City Cebu Northwing, the annex building that provides an additional leasable area of 17,677 square meters. The SM mall in Cebu, which has a total leasable area of about 130,000 square meters, is the fourth largest in the country. China, however, is the next logical site for expansion when SM Prime completes its targeted 45 malls in the Philippines, Mr. Sy said. The company’s 31 SM malls nationwide have a gross floor area of nearly three million square meters. Its biggest is the Mall of Asia in Pasay City and the newest is SM Marikina, which was opened last month. "We’re looking at 45 [malls] here... What comes next? That’s where China comes in. But we need to build up our brand there first. Here, everybody knows SM. But not many know about SM in China," Mr. Sy said. SM recently acquired three malls in China and is building a fourth mall in Chongqing, the commercial capital of southwest China. The existing malls are in Xiamen, Jinjiang and Chengdu. The Chongqing mall will be completed in two years. In the meantime, Mr. Sy said, they are keeping their radars for other opportunities in China. SM Prime is eyeing growth of 5% to 10% and is proceeding with its expansion plans this year despite the financial crisis in the US and Europe. To fuel growth, SM Prime is banking on Filipinos working abroad and their relatives, as well as on shoppers who may have to stay in the country instead of going to Hong Kong and other shopping destinations overseas. "I was in Hong Kong and I assured and reassured our investors that we are very much on track and we are still continuing with our expansion program. We’re not affected by the crisis," Mr. Sy said. SM Prime is scheduled to open malls in Pangasinan and Bulacan and expand SM Megamall and SM Fairview later this year. Mr. Sy said they have kept communication lines with the Cebu City government open for a planned mall at the South Road Properties, a 300-hectare greenfield development in the southern part of the city. SM Prime is also looking for properties in the northern part of Cebu. There are four SM malls in the Visayas — one in Cebu, one in Bacolod City and two in Iloilo City. The plan is to build three or four more, Mr. Sy said. Meanwhile, SM Investments Corp., the holding company of the Sy family’s SM Group, does not plan to list unit SM Land, Inc. on the stock exchange. "I don’t think that is the plan. We’re just consolidating all property assets in SM Land," said Mr. Sy, who is also the first executive vice-president of SM Investments Corp. SM Group consolidated its property assets under Shoemart, Inc. last year. Shoemart has been renamed SM Land as the company tries to be more transparent and unlock the value of its assets. Mr. Sy said SM Land is on the lookout for properties to develop outside Luzon. SM Land projects are all in Luzon, including Hamilo Coast, a 5,700-hectare network of coastal resort communities in Nasugbu, Batangas. sanmig October 14th, 2008, 02:16 AM SM North Edsa - Grass Residences SM MOA - Sea Residences SM Sucat - Field Residences SM Tagaytay - Wind Residences SM Sta Mesa - Mezza Residences SM Bicutan - Chatteau Elysee These are confirmed projects... hirolionheart October 14th, 2008, 03:58 AM SM North Edsa - Grass Residences SM MOA - Sea Residences SM Sucat - Field Residences SM Tagaytay - Wind Residences SM Sta Mesa - Mezza Residences SM Bicutan - Chatteau Elysee These are confirmed projects... Lee, 18 Apr 2008 Source: BusinessWorld PUBLICLY LISTED SM Development Corp. (SMDC) is spending P1.3 billion to develop a high-rise condominium project as it taps the unserved market near schools along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City. The company on Wednesday launched Berkeley Residences, a 35-storey condominium whose development will be funded by internally generated funds and borrowings. Berkeley Residences will rise on a 3,150-square meter (sqm) property along Katipunan Avenue and will house 1,063 studio, one- and two-bedroom units. The units, measuring 20 sqm to 60 sqm, will cost P1.5 million to P3.5 million. "The concept behind Berkeley Residences is to provide homes to families, students, and professionals in a location that is close to some of the most prominent schools in the country, namely the Ateneo de manila University, Miriam College and the University of the Philippines," said Rogelio R. Cabuñag, SMDC president and chief operating officer. He said local buyers have shown interest, but many Filipinos working overseas are more interested in ready-to-build units. Construction started in January and turnover is expected by December 2010. More than half of the units have been sold. SMDC is targeting P2.3 billion in sales. SMDC will launch three more residential projects this year, namely Sea Residences, Field Residences and Wind Residences, whose main markets will be the middle-income Filipinos. Sea Residences will consist of six 15-storey mid-rise clusters that will be built on a 1.8-hectare lot near the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. The project, which will have less than 2,600 units, will be developed in three phases with the first phase aimed for completion by 2010. Field Residences will also be a mid-rise condominium with up to seven clusters and will house 1,700 units. It will rise on a seven-hectare lot behind SM Sucat in Parañaque City. "We have a third one, Wind Residences in Tagaytay City, but that is still in the planning stage," Mr. Cabuñag said. SMDC is the real estate arm of Henry Sy’s SM Investments Corp. for residential projects. Last year, it earned a net profit of P1.2 billion due to strong condominium sales. evilgenius15 October 14th, 2008, 05:19 AM SM North Edsa - Grass Residences SM MOA - Sea Residences SM Sucat - Field Residences SM Tagaytay - Wind Residences SM Sta Mesa - Mezza Residences SM Bicutan - Chatteau Elysee These are confirmed projects... wala ba diyan SM Fairview, hahaha... anu kaya pwede dun...
