parang di ko yata na-intindihan...pa-elaborate naman

I mean.. kapag nag-se-sale ang Robinsons novaliches.. ung dami ng tao na pumupunta doon ehh.. sing-dami lang ng mga tao na pumupunta dun pagka-regular day sa SM Fairview.....

we even used to buy deluxe (orchestra o sa baba) tickets and go to the premier (balcony)... kasi wala dating bantay plus.. mabibilang mo lang ang nanonood even sa magandang movie..

I have no choice but to like Rob Ermita (locals call it "Rob") because it's right next door! Pero they really missed out on the opportunity to build a really impressive world-class mall. It's a bit cramped and the design is very generic. Considering that it stands on the site of the old Ateneo campus, they could have incorporated some elements from that. But with regards to shop mix, they really have a good combination of stores, with a nice balance of upscale and midscale stores. The mall actually started pretty midscale but over time more and more upscale shops moved in because of the growing market. Hindi lang ako nababagayan sa National Bookstore nila, for a mall in the middle of so many schools, their branch is extremely small!

hahaha...!!! :D what are they doing for renovation...? they should cover up all their older, boxy, cemented malls with that new cladding stuff. would easily make them look cleaner, classier and more modern. especially Megamall, North EDSA and Centerpoint...

with Centerpoint, I'm not sure if it will be painted or cladded, but they have already torn down the big SM sign in front of the mall and they have been placing scaffoldings on the whole facade.

but Megamall seems like it will be getting a more serious makeover because the whole curtain wall shown on the picture has been torn down (building A only) including the covered walkway infront leading to the mall entrance from the road. There is also a billboard in Megamall w/c says "Mega Makeover ongoing, for a new shopping experience". Seems like they are serious with this renovation.

magulo talaga super ang Robinsons Manila. hindi siya yung usual na box -type malls, there are 3 different wings (adriatico wing - the least pinupuntahan, padre faura wing- the upscale area, pedro gil wing- the busiest area)

Kaya nga siguro hindi ganun ka-aggressive ang Robinson to put up malls nowadays dahil unlike SM ay di na ganun ka-successful ang malls nila and they opt to lease dept.store/supermarket /hardware sa other malls ? Posible kaya na mag lease sila ng mall space sa mga SM malls in the future ?
Sa Las Pinas nga SM Southmall na lang ang matatag na mall doon . Gotesco , close na , RFC/Metromall/Manuela di na ganoon kalakas .

I think building B would soon follow.... if you'd see the back side of both Megamall buildings... they are both undergoing a make-over... i guess that the new exterior, especially the back side would look more like that of the MegaStrip along J.Vargas..

My 2 other favorite malls are Gale and Shang. Gale because the stores are a little offbeat compared to the other malls in the area. And Shang because it's spacious, airy and it's not an SM.

SM starts construction of Valenzuela mall
By JULIUS VICENTE
TODAY Correspondent

SM Prime holdings Corp. had started the construction of a new supermarket and shopping mall in Valenzuela City.

Ma. Praceli Canares, Valenzuela City engineering department head, told Today that the SM management has submitted a copy of blueprint of the project and heavy equipment have started laying the ground works for a four-story building in a two-hectare lot on MacArthur Highway in barangay Marulas, Valenzuela.

“The SM Prime Holdings plans to have their first hyper-market type of branch in Metro Manila and were lucky that they chose Valenzuela City,” Canares said.

The SM construction site was the former St. Vincent’s Seminary which was later leased by San Miguel Corp. as a depot and eventually SM purchased the land.

Canares said that the construction permit was not yet approved because the city engineers still assesses the permit but next week they would release the results, she added.

“The plan includes the construction of their own indoor and outdoor parking lots, public utility vehicles station, and a minipart set outside the building,” she said.

Canares said the architects of SM are still finalizing the design for the whole project.

Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian said that Valenzuela residents are fortunate after learning that SM mall open next year.

Gatchalian had requested the company to give priority to local resident when they start hiring shopping mall workers

“Surely Valenzuela City residents will get priority for employment at SM,” Gatchalian added.

Gatchalian said that business establishments like SM have been attracted to invest in the city after the local encouraged companies to invest in the city.

He said the city plans to raise P2 billion in revenues next year which is a 100-percent increase in income from the P1-billion revenues this year.

Canares said that after the SM hyper-market, Robinsons is also planning to construct a new mall in the city.

City within a city
By Rowell B. Capuz

Before Ortigas and Makati became the hotspots for diners and movie-goers, there were only Ali Mall; the first multilevel commercial mall in the country; Farmers Plaza, the Philippines’ first air-conditioned shopping center; and New Frontier Cinema, the largest theater in the country with over 3,500 seats. Before people went south for a thrilling theme park adventure, there was Fiesta Carnival, the Philippines’ first all-year indoor amusement center. And when it comes to sports and entertainment, nothings comes to mind except “The Big Dome,” once touted as the largest covered stadium in the world. Before Rockwell Center and The Fort, there was only Araneta Center.

The vision

In 1952, J. Amado Araneta purchased the 35-hectare Cubao property from Radio Communication of America (RCA). Strategically positioned in the heart of the metropolis, the property, which includes the Araneta family home, is bounded by Edsa, Aurora Boulevard, P. Tuason Boulevard, and 15th Avenue. The only area where the two biggest public rail transits intersect—the Metro Rail Transit and the Light Rail Transit 2—the center is easily accessible by almost any mode of transportation. It also houses a bus terminal and is adjacent to regional land transportation stations that go as far as Mindanao. This location results in an estimated one million visitors per day.

The property evolved into a commercial center with the 1967 construction of the New Frontier Theater, the second largest in the world, next only to Radio City Music Hall; the air-conditioned Farmers Plaza in 1969; the Fiesta Carnival in 1972, then the only covered theme park in the country; and Ali Mall in 1976, the first fully enclosed shopping mall in the country.

Since then, Araneta Center has been offering a one-stop shopping, dining, and entertainment experience. By far, the center is the largest commercial hub in terms of area and market population in the metro.

The Big Dome

The Araneta Coliseum was built in 1957 and had its grand opening on March 16, 1960 with the title bout between Gabriel “Flash” Elorde and the American World Junior Lightweight champion Harold Gomes. More than 37,000 spectators witnessed how Elorde dethroned the crowned American champion.

From 1960 to 1963, the Coliseum received international recognition as the “biggest covered coliseum in the world”. Even today, it still remains as one of the largest clear span dome in the world and the largest indoor facility in Southeast Asia with a dome diameter of 108 meters. It occupies a total land area of almost four hectares and has a 2,300 sq.m. floor area.

Through the efforts of the management in bringing world-class events and performers to a world-class facility, The Big Dome recently underwent a P200-million renovation. Plush locker, dressing, production, and press rooms were constructed. Seats in the patron and lower box areas have been replaced. New aluminum grids have been installed to accommodate the most technically demanding event setups in addition to housing a Daktronics four-sided hanging scoreboard, the only one of its kind in the Philippines. It is the only multipurpose facility allowing it to have seven different configured shows in seven consecutive days.

“Significant alterations and additions were made throughout the interior and exterior of the Araneta Coliseum to position it as the country’s only destination for total entertainment and hardcore sports action,” says Manuel Atacador, Uniprom Inc.’s vice president and general manager of Araneta Coliseum.

“The coliseum also boasts of a state-of-the-art JBL sound system, which was used during the Andrea Bocelli concert. Aside from that, we have a tight security inside the center, so guests are assured of safety.”

As an added treat for its patrons, it has the chic Coliseum Circle where the public can enjoy pre-or post- event moments chilling out and dining indoor or al fresco. A tour of the strip is truly an epicurean blast with its cosmopolitan range of cuisine that includes Japanese, Mediterranean, Chinese, Singaporean, European, American, and popular Filipino dishes. Among these attractions are Café Bola, Sachi, Gloria Maris, Rasa, Dencio’s, Padi’s Point, Starbucks Coffee, and Klownz.

Araneta Coliseum also recently launched the “StarWalk” to immortalize stellar performances and events held at the historic venue. World-renowned tenor, Andrea Bocelli was honored with the inaugural “‘Medallion of Honor,” the day before his April 30 concert. This 33-inch in diameter marker with the performer’s name and date of the performance carved in metal and imbedded on stone will be inlaid along the Concourse girding the lower box and upper box levels of The Big Dome.

The StarWalk is the Philippines’ answer to Hollywood’s Walk of Fame and Hong Kong’s Avenue of Stars. Plans are also being finalized to set up a museum that will feature memorabilia from past performances and sporting events held at The Big Dome.

Some of the most remembered performances at The Big Dome were the “Thrilla in Manila,” the Ali-Frazier world heavyweight championship fight, the Philippine Basketball Association Games, and the annual Bb. Pilipinas Beauty Pageant. It was also the venue for Renata Tibaldi’s operatic performance in November 1961 and Van Cliburn’s piano concert in June 1973.

Araneta Center reborn

The Araneta Center Master Redevelopment Plan, introduced by Jorge L. Araneta in 2000, has started to transform the 44-year-old center into a state-of-the-art retail, dining, leisure, and entertainment complex. The other developments in the master plan include about 4,000 residential condominium units, additional office and retail space, and the continuous upgrading of all establishments and structures in the center.

With the ongoing Phase I redevelopment, the Araneta Center holds on to its vision of creating and developing a shopping center for the future.

Deep into the first phase of its master plan in September 2004, Araneta Center will open the Gateway Mall, a 1,000,000 sq.ft. structure dubbed “Like No Other Mall in the World”. Constructed at a cost of over $50 million, Gateway Mall caters to the more affluent market, to compete with other redeveloped commercial districts in and around Metro Manila. The mall will offer world-class brands and unique stores to attract the more affluent consumers from upscale communities surrounding the Center.

As the first major leg of the plan, the Araneta Coliseum is now directly linked to the Gateway Mall, a magnificent creation of glass, concrete, and steel that has several first-of-its-kind features, including the connection to Metro Manila’s major mass railway transit systems, LRT2 and MRT for unparalleled access; the Oasis, a lush, tropical themed interior floating garden open to the sky, graced with towering 50-foot royal palm trees accented with rare plants and designer waterscapes; Times Square, 10 luxuriously appointed theaters with digital sound and stadium seating with a unique cinema lobby skylight; plus many more novel attractions that will make the Gateway Mall the ultimate lifestyle destination.

“Gateway Mall, literally and figuratively goes out of the box. It’s not your typical mall. Its top-of-the-line cinemas are the first with lazy boy seats. It will have a table so you can dine, a coffee shop inside, and a bar so cinema viewers can order and eat while they are watching. The cinemas have an average capacity of 45 persons,” says Manuel.

Gateway Mall will have a gross building area of 1,076,000 sq ft. It will house seven levels of cyber offices sitting on top of five floors of retail stores. There will be 16 entry points from the retail spaces, which are ideally located in prime areas to enable all stores to face the main corridor. Other infrastructures will include covered parking for 600 cars, 40 escalators, and nine elevators including a 10-ton car lift, not to mention valet and concierge services.

The Gateway Mall will also feature the Gourmet Tower, five levels featuring 30 of the best international casual and elegant dining restaurants like Wolfgang Puck, Cibo, Italianni’s, Oyster Bar, Burgoo, and others, all with a view of the Oasis. Gateway Mall boasts of Rustan’s Department Store, the premier anchor department store offering world-class brands like Ferragamo, Fornarina, Chanel, Dior, Montblanc, Lacoste, Bass, DKNY, Springfield, and others.

Moreover, other unique stores that have yet to be seen in Philippine retail will co-anchor in pulling in the target market of the Gateway.

The Concourse Wing or the second level, connected to the commuter train platforms, will offer an array of shops for the urban traveler such as food-on-the-go, gift items, quick-fix retail shops, and other services. The floor also contains a section for the “Young and Trendy.” With only a few steps, the Oasis will be within view, providing a relaxing sight for tired shoppers.

The third level of the mall contains the Lifestyle section, gathering a list of stores for those with discriminating taste. Names like Swarovski, Offrefors, Bohemia, Crystal, Vista Alegre, Atlantis, Noritake, Bassol, Varessa, Oneida, and WMF are some of the few noteworthy stores that will occupy the level.

“We want to cater all kinds of people. Gateway caters the AB market. Farmer’s Plaza caters to the CD market. Ali Mall caters to the C market,” explains Manuel.

But can the Gateway Mall compete with other high-end malls?

Manuel says, “It’s the only mall that has a coliseum. Now that’s a very big advantage.”

Araneta Center also features the biggest Shopwise store in the Philippines. “The store is located at the former Fiesta Carnival, which is now an outdoor theme park. The carnival, on the other hand, features new rides that are really built for outdoors. I would say it’s an efficient use of space. The fare is basically the same,” concludes Manuel.

Gateway Mall will have a soft launching on Sept. 29 and will have a grand opening on Nov. 28.

Are the shopping malls Virra Mall and farmer's Plaza still around?

Both are still surviving. The Farmer's Plaza is newly renovated while the Virra Mall still looks a bit run-down but they are going to close it after the holiday shopping. It would be renovated to become a cyber mall under a different name, that still houses the old computer shops that it used to have but without the pirated VCDs, DVDs, etc. Also, 1/4 of it will house 5 SM anchor stores like SM Appliance, Our Home, Suplus Shop, Ace Hardware and Toy Kingdom. Sadly, SM department store is not included.

Whatever happened to Manuela group's unfinished Pacific Mall in Shaw Blvd. Mandaluyong City ? Will they gonna finished and operate it at all ? It is across their Star mall in EDSA-Shaw .

There was a time in the 90s when mall development was thriving with so many players such as :

SM Group - still the top mall developer with 20++ across the country, with a new
mall opened and many soon to open.

Robinson Group - 2nd placer , with 10++ malls across, the country and recently
opened one.

Ayala Group - with 5++ successful malls/centers across the country and one newly
opened mall.

Araneta - risen from dormancy with their new and promising Gateway Mall in their
huge commercial complex.

Gotianun - with one successful supermall , flourishing lifestyle complex and a
soon to open bargain center/transport hub.

Megaworld - flourishing Eastwood commecial center

Lopez Group - with a fairly successful mall .

Villar/Manuela Group - 4 existing malls and one unfinished .

Gotesco Group - Several chain of malls/dept. stores and one closed in LasPinas.

Uniwide - 2 barely breathing malls but with several active warehouse stores .

@ronnaveth, nope hindi ito yung gagawing SM Vito Cruz.. the lot in front of Cash and Carry has remained idled for years.. ginagawa na lang parking area.. they're actually renovating the supermarket.. Jollibee is already there and there's a very huge space besides Jollibee that's being fitted out now.. I just don't know if it's another fastfood..

I will try to take a picture of the old SM ACA complex which will be turned to SM Vito Cruz.. will post it here soon.

I was there yesterday and I noticed that only a very few stores are open.
They're still cleaning the interior of the mall because it's still very dusty from the construction.

I think the only stores that would open today (if ever today is the Formal Opening) would be the anchor Rustan's Fresh Supermarket, Watson's, St. Paul's, Sweet Factory.

Well, the plants, flowers etc. are not yet there so don't expect the garden to be green. They only have the Royal Palm trees in there, but expect that it will be garnished with a variety of plants and flowers once Gateway becomes fully operational. Parts of it will also be filled with water to look like a pool.

i visited the gateway kanina... it was very impressive! it's really is like no other mall in the world! it's like the podium meets greenbelt 3!... i can't wait 'till its completely done... what i like about it... they tried to incorporate the filipino culture in the architechture... like the sabong and gumamela inspired stained glass ballusters(sp?)... the floral metal ceilings... the intricate designs underneath the escalators... i also like the lrt-gateway connection... it looks so modern of manila... a world class mall connected to a world class train system!... the only bad part is... it looks so beautiful that the rest of the araneta center looked so... old...

..they are also starting the construction of the bridgeway from the gateway to the farmers plaza completing the link bet. the lrt2 and the mrt and eventually completing the manila train system triangle!!

I went to Gateway Mall in Araneta from 1245-0145 pm today , cause I happen to have facilitated some matters in Ortigas so I decided to drop by to Cubao , since its only one ride by bus away .
My verdict , because of its dominantly white colored interiors , it kinda reminds me of Glorietta Mall but its better because its hallways are more spacious , the floor-to-ceiling levels are taller and the interiors have better designs . And because of its mostly glass facade and curtain walls , it does remind me of The Podium too .
Its definitely a high-end mall with the presence of Rustans / Marks & Spencer and host of other branded name shops. The central open-air palms and water garden looks really good and also the beautiful conal dome with skylight . On that topmost floor wherein the conal dome is , seems to be the location of its much-touted most high tech 10 - cinemaplex .
It still looks small by now , since most portions are unaccesible yet . I hope this will really become successful and the rich people patronizes it so that it will be expanded , because as of now it is stil alongside with those old-deteriorating buildings . It now complements the refurbishment done to Araneta Coliseum a few years ago.

thomasian
November 30th, 2004, 03:09 PM
So, you mean the Cinema floor is accessible right now? When I went there last Friday, the Food court is still fenced so I have no way of getting to that area with the skylighed dome since the escalator leading there is inside the foodcourt.

This setup kinda reminds me of G4 (Glorietta 4) because the escalator leading to the cinemas are located in their foodcourt.

Well, not here in the Phils. since an average Taco Bell meal will cost you more than a hundred bucks. And their interiors here look kinda intimidating and upscale so most people mistake it for a high-end fastfood.

For all my kababayans here based in the Philippines, Taco Bell is anything but high end. If you were to ask my personal opinion I find the food there if you could call it as such, plain. Its like opening a canned mexican food ehehehe.

Just go to the Tia Maria Restaurant chain if you guys fancy mexican food, at least they employ chefs/cooks there. That is if the chain is still open.

kala ko dati Popeye is a local chain trying hard copycat of Jolibbee or something. Pero when i tried it with a friend sa Farmer's Plaza, during the UAAP days of the year. ok naman pala, and a streamer at the eatery shows that there are quite a few branches, not in the philippines but around the world. ignoramus ko talaga.

I find it funny that people have to get their Gap from stateside cousins and friends who bring a balikbayan box full of clothing back to the Philippines, when in fact a lot of the Gap clothes are made in the Philippines.

Malamang nga that mall is just another cover-up or bait-trap for unsuspecting young ladies, kasi that site is supposedly where they're hiding Robinson, the giant snake who is John Gokongwei's son. :)

lol...Reminds me of the time i bought Nike shoes from a Miami mall only to see that it was "made in Indonesia".:D

Many people buy "pirated" or copied clothing in Greenhills, etc with GAP, Polo, Old Navy, Nike, etc labels on them. Some of my clothing are.:bash: They also sell fake Gucci, Prada, etc handbags, wallets, etc which sell very well.

Many of the brands mentioned in kiretoce's list are sold in department stores all over MM. Some more than others. And like others have said, some of them have their own boutiques in the metro.

As we were fleeing Manila kanina in preparation for the supertyphoon, we passed by the new WalterMart Makati and I was able to snap some pics with my camphone. Only the supermarket and Abenson are open. There were a lot of people, the usual uziseros (like me), some actual shoppers, and a lot of sales reps from different suppliers like PRC, Nestle, Baygon, Unilever, with matching mascots. There were also some foreign execs, probably from IGA (Int'l Grocery Assoc.) WalterMart's foreign partner

The strange thing is that unlike in most malls, the supermarket is on the 2nd floor so I guess there must be a walkalator or something like that (didn't get to check) to get grocery shoppers down to the ground and parking levels. The Abenson at the 4th floor is huge, maybe even bigger than Avant in GB4, and they have a lot of big, hi-def TVs on display. Just last month, we bought a 54" Samsung HDTV at Sogo Glorietta, and I saw the same exact model here at Abenson WalterMart selling at a higher price, so I guess they've raised prices in anticipation of the Christmas shopping rush. In fairness, their salesrep knew his stuff, I grilled him kasi about the TV's features, hindi niya nga lang alam nabili na namin, so nagtataka siya ba't memoryado ko na lahat ng info pati model number. :)

It's a big mall din, but it's mostly vertical, 5 levels high. Jollibee opens next week. The cinemas and Robinsons department store will open in February. So at last magkaka-Robinsons na sa Makati. They're still busy constucting the back side of the mall. I'm a bit curious though if the speed of the construction may have in any way compromised its structural soundness.

Here are the pics.

Gateway mall's hi-tech cinemas

A new age in movie watching will be ushered in by Cineplex 10, centerpiece of the latest addition to Metro Manila's mall collection -- Gateway located at the Araneta Center in Cubao, QC. Cineplex 10 promises to be a cinema like no other, at least at this part of the world, as it offers a range of facility and services that cannot be found in any other cinema in the country.

"The idea was to create a cinema that was really among the best in the world in terms of the layout and the facility that are offered and I think that's what we've done," said international cinema consultant Ian Riches, who spearheaded the design of Cineplex 10. Mr. Riches works with Loew Cinema in the United States.

For the last two years, he and the local team of the Araneta-owned mall have been working on the cinema complex, starting literally from scratch. The fourth level of the mall is mainly devoted to the theaters.

"We have actually designed this from scratch so this isn't a conversion of an old cinema or a refurbished one."

Considering that lack of upscale malls in the Cubao area, Mr. Riches assured that there is a market for Gateway and their high-tech cinema complex.

"There are a lot of 'high-end' people who live very close to this area. Our research shows that there is a demand for such a facility," noted Mr. Riches.

Two major construction features separate Cineplex 10 from all the other cinemas in town. First is the Boral Cinema Wall Construction system which ensures total soundproofing, thus guaranteeing that moviegoers only hear the film they have paid for.

Mr. Riches stressed that this is a critical aspect of the whole movie-watching experience. "This should give us improved sound separation between the individual cinemas. The acoustic test that we've done so far indicates that it works."

The other feature is the stadium-style stepped seating in all 10 cinemas which guarantees an uninterrupted view of the screen. "Even if somebody sits in front of you, you should be able to see over their head," promised Mr. Riches.

But that is only the beginning, so to speak. Cineplex 10 houses 2,300 seats in its 10 auditoria -- the 40-seat VIP screen, a 140-seater, four cinemas with 155 seats, three with 300 seats, and the largest theater with 530 seats.

"What we've done is to create different-sized cinemas to cater for blockbusters and less busy films," explained Mr. Riches.

Each theater is equipped with ergonomically designed chairs which come with armrests, cup holders, and ample leg room.

For the ultimate viewing experience, Cineplex 10 has been equipped with the latest cinema technology. Aside from the undisturbed viewing provided by the special wall treatment, the best picture quality is guaranteed by wall-to-wall concave Perlux screens while US-made Simplex projectors provide crisp and steady pictures. To maximize space, each screen was stretched from one end of the wall to the other. In addition, the curved screen of the largest theater, Cinema 5, extends 60 feet wide, which the Araneta people claim is by far the largest in the country.

Thrown in also the latest in sound technology -- the Dolby Digital EX sound system with JBL loudspeakers driven by powerful QSC amplifiers.

For moviegoers who want a more private screening, Gateway offers Cinema 10 or the VIP cinema furnished with 40 La-Z-Boy reclining leatherette chairs, a concierge service, and exclusive entrance, lounge, and ticket office.

Cinema 10 will also be made available for private functions while the huge Cinema 5 is touted to be an ideal venue for corporate screenings, film festivals, and movie previews. A spacious lobby is at the center of it all and is adjacent to restaurants and the snack counter.

To guarantee the best movie experience from beginning to end, Cineplex also includes the international Vista computerized ticketing system from New Zealand. This system provides fast ticket service by enabling customers to pre-book their seats online and pay for them as well using a credit or debit card. To collect the prepaid tickets, the customer only needs to swipe the card in an ATM-style ticket-issuing machine. Refreshments can also be paid for online.

Loyal patrons of Cineplex 10 can take advantage of an exclusive rewards program wherein points are gained for every cinema visit. The accumulated points can be exchanged for cinema merchandise, tickets, and other gifts.

On Nov. 26, Gateway will have its "soft opening" wherein some of the cinemas open to the public, while a grand opening is scheduled for next year. For the soft opening Cineplex 10 will offer a special ticket price of PhP99 for the next several weeks, while regular prices are pegged at PhP130 and PhP250 for the VIP cinema.

"We really just want people to come down and try the cinema, see how nice it is, see how it differs from the places they've been going to, bring their friends, start talking about it," added Mr. Riches. The best advertisement, after all, is a satisfied customer. And many satisfied customers Cineplex wants to make. -- J. L. Cagoco, BusinessWorldOnline

The last time we ate at Taco Bell, there was a group of foreigners (most probably Americans based on the accent) who came in to eat. They were riding a beat-up old pick-up truck. Parang malayo pa ang pinanggalingan. I guess they really really missed Taco Bell.

I agree that Mexicali or Tia Maria's beats their food for taste, even Pancake House's Taco (which is not very Mexican at all) is still more delicious. I don't think 100 pesos is all that expensive though considerating their overhead, in fact I'm pretty sure they must be operating on a loss since their wrappers and packaging seems to have been imported from the US pa, and one of their managers or supervisors seems like an American black woman who I guess is being paid in $. So this Taco Bell branch is really more like a glorified advertisement or preview for their future mass roll-out (if it ever comes to that).

thomasian
December 4th, 2004, 12:29 PM
I also saw that Black American woman in Taco Bell, mukha syang nakakatakot so kung siya yung supervisor siguradong the staff will be forced to work harder. About their future mass roll-ut, the last time I heard, there was a plan to open two more stores, one in E. Rodriguez and the other one in - if I remember it right - Makati.

Business, retail hub of future
By Charles E. Buban
Inquirer News Service

YOU may have noticed that the Araneta Center in Cubao is in a state of flux.

But whatever changes you are now seeing are just the initial phase of an ambitious 1.25-billion-dollar (68.5 billion pesos) master plan to transform the area into a prime business and retail center in 20 years.

Araneta Center MasterPlan, as it is called by its planners, will involve the construction of a multi-story mall surrounding a renovated Araneta Coliseum, hotel facilities, and the Manila Tower, a towering communications building that will rival Paris' Eiffel Tower in height.

As soon as the first phase is completed, Araneta Center will be the largest shopping center complex in the world, according to US-based consulting firm RTKL.

800,000 people

Converging daily in Araneta Center are more than 800,000 people, a big market that has led to the redevelopment plan.

And to capture this market, the two-billion-peso Gateway Mall will offer five levels of shopping, dining and entertainment destinations. It is expected for completion by March 2004.

The 100,000 square-meter mall will also showcase the 10-screen Warner Bros. Cinemas, including a 40-seater Gold Club Cinema.

Integrated atop Gateway Mall is a seven-story office tower called "cyberoffices." These offices will be equipped with advanced telecom facilities and broadband technology to meet the unique requirements of modern-day entrepreneurs engaged in the business of information technology.

Gateway Mall will be directly linked to two major transit lines (MRT 3 and LRT 2) and the Araneta Coliseum.

35-hectare property

It was in 1952 when Filipino industrialist Don Jose Amado Araneta purchased Araneta Center's 35-hectare property bounded by EDSA, Aurora Boulevard, P. Tuason and 15th Avenue.

Since then, Araneta Center has become one of the largest retail entertainment mixed-use centers in the Philippines.

It boasts the following landmarks: the Araneta Coliseum, one of the world's largest clear span domes and Southeast Asia's largest indoor facility; Ali Mall, the country's first multilevel commercial mall; New Frontier Cinema, one of the country's largest theaters with over 3,500 seats; and Fiesta Carnival, the country's first all-year indoor amusement center.

In 2000, Araneta Center set into motion phase one of the MasterPlan with the renovation of Araneta Coliseum and Farmers Plaza.

The redevelopment project carefully considers both upscale and economy markets. For example, tiangge (flea market) centers are now concentrated in one area. It also considers ultimate comfort and convenience, which is why the design of the new Araneta Center will put shopping and entertainment destinations side by side with the business centers.

no. Australia once banned the import of mango from the Philippines except if it was from Guimaras (what's new?). PH was expected to retaliate by limiting the import of beef from Aus and shift to import of carabeef from India. But Gloria did the unexpected...and beef import was continued. Im not sure about chicken.

About the rival of Burger King, Carl's Jr. What branches do they have left open?
The E. Rodriguez branch near St. Lukes closed down recently, and so is their SM Manila branch. I remember there is one in G4 and Robinsons Ermita. I'm pretty sure the G4 branch is still open. How about the Robinsons Ermita branch is it still open?

At least their effort is laudable, considering that the Oasis is on the second level of the mall and it is located in Cubao which has no parks and lacks greeneries, unlike Greenbelt which is originally a very lush park even before the renovation of it resulted to the creation of Greenbelt 2,3 and 4.

The dome does have a beautiful illuminating effect, it gives just the right light to illuminate the cinema lobby while preserving the "cinematic" atmosphere of the place plus there is also a window on one side of the lobby (right side of the picture) letting in more natural light. Although don't expect a good view from that window because all you will see is the not so beautiful New Frontier theatre and the Aurora Tower together with the ugly roof of the former plaza fair. And not to forget the space, it is spacious and the ceiling is high enough so you won't feel cramped inside.

cropher
December 12th, 2004, 04:37 PM
Really , not crampy at all and at the same time illuminated with right amounts of natural lights and with high ceilings , that's good to know. What other malls do you consider which has spacious cinemaplex lobbies and well illuminated too ?

thomasian
December 12th, 2004, 04:55 PM
Well, Greenbelt 3 has the highest ceiling and full height glass windows overlooking the park.

Eastwood is also nice, like a smaller version of Greenbelt without the big windows. Although it has small windows it doesn't allow inside significant amounts of natural light and there is no "view" because the glass is frosted.

Alabang Town Center - spacious and okay except for the steel colums obstructing

Just came from Gateway kanina. Nice! I think the prestige of the new upscale mall mall in Araneta is even spilling over to Ali Mall and Shopwise, a lot of new shops and food outlets are opening soon all over Araneta Center. Haven't seen this much construction activity in Cubao in a while. Even the sidewalks and islands are being refurbished. Araneta Center is huge! And if it gets properly built up it can easily rival Glorietta/Greenbelt.

By the way, there's a night market at the Avenida up to January 30. It's very busy, lots of shoppers. This year seems to be another banner year for consumer spending, almost everywhere you go people are shopping and eating out. Especially in the appliance stores, TVs, DVD players, and other appliances are flying off the shelves, I literally saw a truckload of Toshiba products being delivered to Festival mall. Siguro kasi nagsisiuwian na ang mga balikbayan at OFW.

If you guys noticed, the current Gateway Mall is very different from the one in the right side this picture.

Well, that's the first design for Gateway but it was changed. If you compare the current Gateway Mall to the one in the first rendering, you'll notice that the current Gateway is smaller. Maybe the Aranetas aren't quite sure if there's a market for an upscale mall in the Cubao area so they just decided to build a smaller mall.

Or maybe they will expand it in the future.

Is that SM in that tower with the revolving disco on top still open? Matter of fact, does that building still exist? It looks so 70's on the inside!

Revolving disco?! That sounds fun. Where? Makati? QC? Manila?

Yup, that's SM Quiapo and it's still open, they renovated so it looks just like any other SM inside. It used to be the PNB building, but now aside from SM it also houses the City College of Manila.

Ah yes. SM Carriedo. Now that I think about it, I did notice the strange circular thing on top of the building. I guess it doesn't revolve and doesn't have a disco in it anymore?

Yes, it is SM Manila. I remember shopping there in the 80's, the lobby, elevators, and hotel architecture is still present even though it is a SM. We got in the elevator once. The SM is only 3 floors, but the elevator went all the way to the top floors. They were unoccupied, smelled musty, looked very 70's, and the door to the disco itself was locked.

Maganda , simple at clean yung pagkakagawa nung at five levels. Cinemas at level five is not yet operational at kokonti pa lang na shops ang operational. Siguro by next year full blast na ito at alternative to the Makati C Sq.

I can't believe that they call the Coliseum "newly renovated." I was there last year and it still looks antiquated! They should rebuild it like the Arena in Oakland. The outside and the roof are intact but the interior was completely gutted and rebuilt. It sure could use luxury suites, a food court, and all the new bells and whistles that are standard in all new sports arenas. However they should retain the staircases inside, they are retro!

well I guess that Gateway looked a bit exact to the rendering except its office tower which has less floors.....

Well the cinemas are technically at the fifth level, but Gateway has a different way of naming floors. So, Ground Floor = Ground Floor, Level 2 = Level 1, Level 3 = Level 2, Level 4 = Level 3 and the Level 5 is named as Level 4. So don't be confused if you read articles about Gateway Cineplex saying that it's on the 4th Level of the mall. That also applies to the Elevator, so the buttons look like b3, b2, b1, G, 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Is it really a Disco? I think I remember my aunt telling me stories about the revolving restaurant in Carriedo and how it has a good view.

anyways.. from that article... it say's of the Millenium Mall but not of the Gateway Mall.... would this two establishment be the same.... that is.. when they actually build Millenium Mall, they renamed it to Gateway Mall from their slogan that they dream Araneta to be the gateway of Quezon City....
