View Full Version : Mega Metro Manila Malls
Waldenstrom January 15th, 2009, 10:30 AM ^ oh wonderful idea!!! :okay:
how about you guys? how would you like our malls to look like? Maybe SM and Ayala peeps are lurking here, we might give them some ideas.

:)
JulZ January 15th, 2009, 12:25 PM ohh that looks nice and BIG!!! :D
For the nth time, I'm gonna say this again... I just hope we have more nice and peaceful malls like the Alabang Town Center :) Our malls get bigger and bigger and busy-looking too. :( My dream is that we'll have a mall with nature park/waterfalls at the center or even giant aquarium like the Manila Ocean Park. That's the best shopping experience for me...and not seeing electronic device shows, concerts and crowded people at the activity center. City life is already stressful and malls should somehow compensate for the lack of parks and gardens in the metro.
I commend TriNoma's Garden and SM MoA's San Miguel by the Bay. I wish we'll have more like these in the future.
go ATC!....gusto kong mall may skiing rink! at may katabing theme park (moa soon!)
philip_v January 15th, 2009, 01:15 PM ^^^ Are those people living in Leveriza illegal settlers or do they own land titles? If they do, then they can't just be pushed away.
I think Rizal Memorial Complex must be renovated but still remain as a sports hub. It's where most of the national athletes live and train. Star City is just nearby so there's no need for another amusement park in that area.
^ oh wonderful idea!!! :okay:
how about you guys? how would you like our malls to look like? Maybe SM and Ayala peeps are lurking here, we might give them some ideas.
I agree with what you say. We need more open malls, less crowded, lots of walking areas, lots of greenery. As you've said, it's really peaceful shopping there. I grew up going to this mall and until now, it still is my favorite mall.
ona January 15th, 2009, 01:31 PM Nakita ko yung master plan ng MoA noon, it's just like SM's version of Ayala Makati without Greenbelt kasi wala talagang ititirang open space pwera lang yung mahabang strip sa seaside. Yung paligid ng MoA puro mid to high rise buildings (condos, hotels, & office spaces).
Nice and peaceful yes...like a breath of fresh air, as you walk along the old Main Bldg is like SM North EDSA of the 90's shop's signs are outdated, and Annex 1 a huge interior to update the mall but still feels like EDSA Central and then, here comes Annex 2! Colors and lines will remind you of SM Marikina and The Block. Shops are the usuals from SM, some are open, most are opening in March 2009.
Unfortunately...the wing is kinda small, i was expecting it bigger as there are tons more space there for expansion, sa likod pala sya ng Annex 1 nilagay, but it's a beautiful addition none the less. :)
years after magkakaroon yan...
good viewing site kung tutuusin...
kaya tuwing umaga ansarap tingnan ang sunrise from belfast street kahit
nasa fx...

That's what I've been telling you guys since then.
Maganda talaga ang view dyan, especially kapag tanghali......
Kitang-kita Eastwood, Ortigas and even Makati from afar......

Uy! Oo nga po!
Try ko mag come up ng isang masterplan para mai-share ko talent ko..... :)
Pero against po ako sa Rizal Memorial to be like EK or some theme park....
I-revamp na lang or iimprove para mas ma-utilize ng maayos kung magkakaroon man ng sporting events. :okay:
Para yatang magmumukhang Roponggi Hills sa Japan.....  :jk:

the glass wall facing Quirino is a bit bittersweet... it's a grand view of its competition Nova Market and the buses and the traffic!
but the glass wall facing south is just spectacular... a grand view of the metro manila skyline...
with this development, i smell something really grand in the near future: It seems that SM Fairview is up for a major aesthetic overhaul. just notice how annex 2's floor design perfectly line up to the atriums of annex 1 and the main. it looks like their doing another Iloilo or Manila. :D
i also notice signage pointing to a "hypermarket" w/c is kinda odd.
i wonder what will they do to the huge space ACE left at the Annex 1... that space is really huge! it's almost like an aircraft hangar and could fit 2 full sized supermarkets.
Is quezon city that populous to have 2 SM's having multiple supermarkets?

pero yeah... that mall's guards are more accommodating to photographers... remember the first look of its interiors before? it came to a point na yung guard magpipicture for us
Ph Man January 17th, 2009, 04:25 AM haha...and blame (read: thank) it to the contractual system of employing security folks. some guards are not aware that their predecessors actually tried apprehending photographers with conspicuous cams.

it's also the first mall na pinanooran namin ng movie ng mga kapatid kong twins. we watched Finding Nemo. after several runs of different trailers and ads, my then 4-year old sister innocently asked "kuya, anong channel ang pinapanood natin? ba't andaming commercial?"

sounds very very familiar!
Ph Man January 17th, 2009, 06:25 PM looks like a better SM to me. far from the old ones who would try to maximize any available space by putting some mini stores. i'm glad SM Fairview is dedicating more space for people to move around. Four years back, the SM actually gets very crowded during weekends.
kiretoce January 17th, 2009, 08:34 PM Spending must be considerable because SM is able to generate the income for all of these expansions.
I think SM gets the majority of their revenue from the tenants that leases store space at their malls, not directly from the shoppers themselves. But there is indeed an indirect link between the shoppers and SM; whether the tenant makes a profit or not, they still have to pay SM their monthly rent or be evicted upon failure to do so.

alexcerado January 19th, 2009, 09:38 PM Trinoma vs. SM North Edsa
To bring viewers back, mall theaters offer La-Z-Boy seats
By Isah V. Red
MALL cinemas are racing to build expensive theaters with stadium-style seating, the arrangement film buffs seem to prefer because they see the screen wherever they’re seated.
The race heated up after a new kid on the block, Ayala’s Trinoma, beat longtime leader SM North Edsa with its seven-screen multiplex and their stadium configuration. It signaled that the auditorium style that Henry Sy used to draw the hordes to his malls may have outlived its usefulness, and Trinoma’s box office receipts show it. During this month’s first weekend alone, for instance, Trinoma’s multiplex contributed P2.37 million to the P36.21 million that the movie Hancock grossed in four days, beating SM North Edsa’s P1.61-million take.
Trinoma’s success surprises even Ayala Cinema’s Rollie Dueñas. “We didn’t expect us to be the theaters of choice among the market in Quezon City, considering there are other theaters nearby” Dueñas says of his multiplex whose tickets are priced P20 higher than SM North’s. “We’re glad we’re doing well-especially with the English-language films.”
A spokesman for Hancock’s distributors says Trinoma’s theaters are drawing the crowds because of the mall’s access to the commuter trains serving the Monumento-Baclaran sector, its taxi bays, and its bus and jeepney stops.
Ric Camaligan, vice president of SM Leisures, acknowledges that Trinoma has overtaken SM City North Edsa in movie ticket sales. “The mall is new and as we know, we like to try what’s new,” he says.
It's Official! Trinoma na ang main road for the success of a movie! :ohno:
Implicitly, Camaligan acknowledged that the stadium style may have been winning the ticket war when he said the new SM City Marikina would have stadium-style seating. The Sys’ other theaters face fixing up as well.
“We’re retooling some,” Camaligan says. “We’ve converted one of the theaters in The Block [on SM North] into a digital 3D screen, a downsized version of the IMAX at the SM Mall of Asia. We also added digital projection in some of our theaters to accommodate digital films.”
HE Sys’ reconfiguration of their multiplexes represents some sort of admission that they might have failed to read their market or the competition or both. Indeed, the market leader that brought down the cinema palaces on Rizal Avenue and Aurora Boulevard and Cubao in Quezon City—the cinemas that ruled the roost from the 1950s up to the late 1970s—is now following trends instead of starting them.
Sy brought down the movie palaces when he offered theaters at the SM City North Edsa with state-of-the-art sound and wide screens in 1983. Dispensing with the balcony, but retaining the orchestra and loge sections of the old cinema palace, he introduced the auditorium style of seating in the mall’s eight theaters, and then added four more five years later to present the biggest multiplex in the country.
SM North Edsa became the template for other developers wanting to ensure a constant flow of human traffic in their malls, and it just grew and grew. It eventually offered 50,000 seats to become the biggest theater circuit in the country, so that one simultaneous screening means P26 million in gross receipts at P130 per ticket in just one day.
The multiplexes at the SM malls reigned, but the competition eventually wised up. As if on cue, the Power Plant in Rockwell, the Shangri-La Plaza in Mandaluyong, and the Gateway in Quezon City rejected the auditorium style in favor of the stadium in building their cinemas. The Robinsons malls in Manila and Mandaluyong reconfigured their auditoriums into stadiums, and three years ago the Aranetas built a spanking multiplex with 10 screens on top of Gateway Mall—one of those a premium theater exclusive to Globe Platinum members, and with La-Z-Boy seats.
The SM group finally took notice when Trinoma, the new high-end mall just across the street, embraced the stadium design and got the crowds coming. The group had initially ignored the trend, saying its theaters were meant for a market that did not really care about technological advances in movie exhibition like digital surround. Now it’s having second thoughts about it.
Still, while the auditorium style of seating in multiplexes may have been out of fashion, Camaligan of SM Leisures says SM is not about to plunge into a wholesale reconfiguration of its existing cinemas. That will require some serious study, he says, because a new theater with state-of-the-art projection and sound means millions of pesos in investment.
“That’s a lot of money at a time when the movie industry worldwide is going through difficult times,” he says.

In the ‘plex’
by Isah V. Red
The advent of malls in Metro Manila signaled the end of the golden era of the movie palaces in the Philippines as the multiplex gradually drew the audiences away from Rizal and C.M. Recto avenues in Manila and Aurora Boulevard and Araneta Center in Cubao, where until the late ’80s stand-alone theaters attracted shoppers to these commercial districts.
SM City, the first of the malls built by Henry Sy, in 1983, offered eight screens (four at both ends of the mall’s main building), with state-of-the-art sound and wide screens. The theater’s seating capacity was slightly less than the average 1,200 in a movie palace (with three sections—orchestra, balcony, and loge). The Sys have reconfigured the movie palace interiors by adapting the auditorium style and eliminating the uppermost balcony section but retaining the loge section. Four more but smaller theaters were added five years later at the newly built SM City Annex, making SM City North Edsa the biggest multiplex in the country with a total of 12 screens.
The success of the SM City North Edsa multiplex became the template for other mall developers wanting to ensure constant flow of human traffic in the malls. The multiplex concept has been integrated in the design of malls that later would rise across the metropolis including Robinsons (Galleria and Ermita).
Ali Mall at the Araneta Center, which in a way pioneered the multiplex, first with two screens in the original two-story affair across what used to be Rustan’s Cubao and two more at the additional three-story edifice annexed to the first, eventually realized it was losing business to the SM Cinemas. They added three more screens on the third level of the mall.
The owners of the Araneta Center finally had the guts and gumption to be a major player in theatrical exhibition. Three years ago, they opened a new spanking multiplex on the top floor of Gateway Mall with 10 screens (one is a premium theater exclusive to Globe Platinum members featuring LazyBoy seats).
With the opening of SM City Marikina in September this year, SM Cinemas cements its foothold in theatrical exhibition as the biggest theater circuit in the country with more than a hundred screens nationwide that accounts for some 50,000 seats in one simultaneous screenings of a movie.
For a full house, that would amount to P26 million in gross ticket revenues (at an average P130 per admission ticket) in one day. Small wonder why a movie distributor would be willing to mutilate an MPAA R-rated Hollywood movie for a lower MTRCB R-13 rating to get a booking within the SM Cinema circuit (which has a standing policy of no R-18 films in its theaters).
The demise of the “bold” movies and the eventual slackening of the local movie industry, according to producers and directors, have been hastened with the enforcement of this policy. The same producers and directors argue that movies with sexual content had kept the industry alive until the no-R18 at SM Cinemas policy.
For the last two decades, bookers have considered the multiplex at the SM City North Edsa as the yardstick for a movie’s box-office potentials. It was also in that multiplex where “bold or sexually themed” movies made a killing at the box office.
In the heydays of the local sexflicks, producers and distributors fielded their hawk-eyed “checkers” in that multiplex to make sure the head count matched the ticket sales, from which figures they were able to project how much cash they could pocket in the 10-day run of the movies.
The Ayalas have been in the theater business longer than the Sys. Its first venture was Quad at the Ayala Center, a four-screen multiplex built in the late ’70s, long before the Sys’ humongous malls. The theaters were medium sized that seated no more than 500, following the auditorium seating style that had become the prevalent configuration for plex-type theaters.
In the early ’80s, they built its second multiplex, Greenbelt, with four screens and at the time considered the best in the metropolis. It has been replaced five years ago by Greenbelt 3 with five screens (two of which is THX certified and is the first stadium seating theaters in the country. The two screens at the old Greenbelt is today, the most decrepit of the Ayala multiplexes, second only to the poorly designed Glorietta 4 Cinemas that came years before Greenbelt 3.
Stadium seating that allows audience unobstructed view of the screen from where they are seated suddenly became de rigueur in designing theaters for cineplexes. It is the style adopted by the designers of the multiplexes at Power Plant in Rockwell, The Shangri-La Plaza, and Gateway.
While the admission at these plexes steadily grew through the years, SM Cinemas ignored this shift in viewing habits, maintaining that its theaters are meant for a market that doesn’t really care much about technological advances in film exhibition like digital surround sound system (Dolby Digital, DTS, and SDDS). The multiplex at the Mall of Asia, built at a time when stadium seating with digital surround sound is already the choice of audiences who can cough up P120 to P170 on an admission ticket, had theaters (except the CenterStage that was meant for live performances as well) configured in the old auditorium style with a loge section labeled as deluxe. Only several theaters are equipped with digital surround, just like in other multiplexes of the malls.
The opening of Trinoma, an Ayala-owned and -operated mall across SM City North Edsa, with a seven-screen multiplex (with one THX certified and equipped with digital surround system), all configured with stadium seating surely startled the managers of SM Cinemas and the owners of the mall.
SM City North Edsa has long been considered the bastion of movie audience that patronized Tagalog movies, but the low production output of the cash-strapped local movie industry has caused an unexpected paradigm shift, leaving theater owners and operators no choice but to shift their exhibitions to foreign-language films.
While this may be a boon to multiplexes geared towards audiences with express preference to English language movies that are tailored fit to be screened in digital sound environment, the slackening of production from the local movie industry is forcing theater owners of decrepit movie houses even in the malls to either close them down or reconfigure them into the prevailing choice.
Robinsons Galleria has reconfigured its theaters to stadium seating. Three new screens with stadium seating and digital sound have been put up at Robinsons Ermita.
Ric Camaligan, vice president of SM Leisures, said that three screens at the newly built SM City Marikina will be stadium seating as well, which means that it has acknowledged the fact that the auditorium style has long been out of fashion. Yet, SM will not plunge into a massive renovation or reconfiguration of its existing multiplexes.
“We’re retooling some,” he said. “We converted one of the theaters at The Block into a Digital 3D screen, a downsized version of the IMAX at the SM Mall of Asia. We also added digital projection in some of our theaters to accommodate digital films (movies shot on HD video camera and not film).”
Camaligan added that a new theater with state-of-the-art projection and sound can mean millions of pesos in investment. “And that’s a lot of money at a time when the movie industry worldwide is going through difficult times.”
SM’s Ric Camaligan acknowledges that Trinoma has overtaken SM City North Edsa in movie ticket receipts. “The mall is new and as we know we’d like to try what’s new,” he said adding that eventually with the redevelopment of SM’s mall across the new Ayala mall, the crowd would stream back to its multiplexes.
Ayala Cinema’s Rollie Dueñas, on the other hand, is surprised at the performance of Trinoma’s multiplex. “We didn’t expect it to be the theaters of choice among the market in Quezon City, considering that there are other theaters nearby (SM City, Cubao, Ever Gotesco Commonwealth). We’re glad it’s doing well, especially with English language films.” Admission tickets at the Trinoma are priced P20 more than at SM City North Edsa.
Today, Trinoma has become the benchmark for a movie to be a big hit. It has been the top money-maker for movies in recent release.
The Dark Knight, the top box-office draw two weekends ago, grossed with a phenomenal P62.6 million for the July 17 to 20 weekend period with Trinoma posting P3.91 million of it. Meanwhile, SM North Edsa contributed merely P2.16 million to its total gross.
A spokesman of the distributor of The Dark Knight cited Trinoma’s good location (it has a direct access to the commuter train that runs the length of North Edsa to Edsa/Taft and it’s the loading/unloading stop for buses plying the Baclaran-Monumento-Meycauayan route) and the multiplex’s well-designed theaters and state-of-the-art projection and sound (all theaters are digital with one THX certified) as the biggest come on for audience that wants value for money.
With this development in movie exhibition, Dueñas has vaguely hinted at a possible renovation for the cinemas of Glorietta 4 (the first all-digital multiplex) and similarly Camaligan said that his group is doing a serious study of the market before SM could do something with their existing properties.
As more developers are looking into the possibility of building more malls with multiplexes, the rules of the game will certainly change in the next couple of years. The technological advances in movie exhibition is defining as well the kind of screens movies will be best projected and with what kind of sound system. The introduction of digital projection, which SM has pioneered at it’s The Block segment at SM City North Edsa is also expected to keep movie fans excited, as it is also a buffer to the dwindling audiences as more and more movie buffs are investing on home theater systems including giant cinema-like video images on wide screen LCD and Plasma monitors.
A second Imax is being constructed at the SM City North Edsa. The guys across the Trinoma are crossing their fingers, hoping this would bring the moviegoers back to the first real multiplex in the Philippines.
Bakit until now hindi pa nila ginagawa? Anong uunahin nila, Hotel at Arena ng Mall of Asia? Gandahan ang screen and ang interior, sobrang gawing state of the art.
I don't want to see SM North Edsa closing its doors to the public because of lack of people and lack of income.
ona January 19th, 2009, 11:04 PM ^^I don't know what all the fuzz is about SM North being outperformed by the newer mall...its natural people will go to the latest place on the block.
As for SM not giving SM North enough attention (opting for dev'ts in Mall of Asia), I beg to disagree...Among ALL SM Malls, SM North Edsa has undergone more expansions, renovations and improvements to the point that it is now the Country's Largest Mall. SM even mentioned that they plan to make SM North Edsa the World's Largest Mall (its currently the world's 2nd Largest Mall).
As for box office reciepts, SM North Edsa was still proclaimed the top performing Cineplex for the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival. TriNoma only came 2nd.
As for now, I'm still enjoying the redevelpment of SM North & I'm optimistic about it. The best is yet to come for SM North (Sky-Garden + IMax). No doubt the Malling Spotlight for 2009-2010 will be on the Country's Largest Mall
ona January 19th, 2009, 11:15 PM So it means, P164-M ang gagastusin ng SM para sa renovation ng SM North Edsa..US$3.46 = P164, 000, 000.
Mukhang kaunting retouch lang yung gagawin nila sa main building ng SM North dahil P160 million lang budget while yung "The Annex" cost P1.8 Billion...I was hoping for a complete overhaul kasi (wavy corridors like SM North Annex maybe) of the entire interiors para mag-blend sya with "The Block" at "the Annex".
Anyway, an improvement...is still better than leaving the mall at its old condition. Looks like the SM North Annex will really be very nice for strolling once the shops are open (more than 350 shops kaya parang average Manila mall na sa dami ng shops!)
ona January 19th, 2009, 11:40 PM the annex, SM NORTH EDSA

i've never seen LV and Gucci in a mall/shopping place with ceramic tiles floor and just aluminum cladding. :sleepy: these luxury stores are very picky when it comes to finishes ng interiors at exteriors.
LV says no to aluminum cladding and ceramic; yes to stone, granite, marble, titanium and shiny stainless steel. that's my observation sa places where LV has set up their stores.

c0kelitr0 January 20th, 2009, 04:38 AM ^^ some of their stores, yes. their mid-price stores like Springfield and Lacoste. only a few of SSI stores can be considered "luxury". even Zara can't be considered luxury even as it pretends to be one.
JEFFjr_25 January 20th, 2009, 04:44 AM Zara is not a high-end brand. :)

Actually, all of trinoma's water features are all functioning in full glory during saturdays-sundays specifically, because more people are there. I can bet you a 90% probability that this is a fact. (Unless there's serious maintainance)
Also, the floorings, tiles, walls, paints, steel and non-steel fixtures and everything you see in TriNoma are all cheap feeling materials trying to look classy, TRUE, except for certain high-end sections where it's dramatically unnoticed.
I'm still unsure, because, i bet the management KNOWS the current state of TriNoma, dirty, i wonder why they are not yet doing something about it (compare it to Greenbelt 5's), maybe after SM North's Refurbishing, things will brighten at TriNoma :D

The oversaturation of North Edsa is really weird... no where else in the world you'll see one brand having multiple branches within a kilometer's radius
..come to think of it, if SM North and Trinoma were considered as one single shopping complex, it would be the largest mall in the world with almost 600,000sqm of space with 19 cinemas, almost 1,000 stores, 2 parks, 4 supermarkets, 3 Department Stores and 3 foodcourts. it can also hold 4 major events at its combined activity centers and serve food at close to 200 restaurants of various cuisines... in summary, it could easily break all records!

they could start integrating it by building bridges that will directly connect the two malls. unlike the bridge now na medyo supot pa.:lol: dapat seamless yung connection na hindi mo mapapansin na nasa ibang mall ka na pala. i do think its possible.

actually oversaturated na ang metro manila, people just go to different malls para maiba lang ang view, but technically, you'll find the same brands, same shops, same food stores inside each mall... it just depends how the mall places itself in the spectrum.
example: Bench... you'll find 4 stores within North Edsa, when you go home to Fairview, you'll find an additional 5 stores at SM and Robinsons... so funny!

It also depends how big the store or how wider their selection is. I live in Fairview, but I still go to Megamall to buy clothes at Memo / G2000 / Arrow :)

Govt to fund Grand Central Terminal [The Manila Times, Philippines]
Recent undefined News
The Transport official, who requested anonymity, said the budget of P777 million will be used to fund the "Grand Central Terminal," the common station for Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT 3) and Line 7 (MRT 7), as well as the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT 1) North Extension Project.
The new terminal would be constructed near the SM North Annex in Quezon City and will connect the MRT 3 and 7 and LRT 1 North Extension.
The LRT 1 North Extension project, which is expected to complete in May next year, will cost around P6.32 billion.
Of the total, civil and architectural work would cost P3.3 billion; electromechanical works, P1.9 billion; consultancy services, P317.4 million; contingency, P318 million; and inflation adjustment, P342.35 million.
The joint venture of D.M. Consunji and First Balfour last year won the contract to construct the LRT 1 North Extension Project.
The project involves the extension of LRT 1 to the North Avenue station of MRT 3, the construction of two new intermediate stations (Balintawak and Roosevelt) and a terminal station (LRT 1 North Avenue station).
The Balintawak station will provide modal interchange with bus and jeepney services entering Metro Manila from the north via the North Luzon Expressway.
Once running, the LRT 1 North Extension is expected to serve about 800,000 to 1 million passengers.
The LRT 1 North Extension Project, which aims to close the EDSA Loop, will need three additional stations from the existing Monumento Station of and ending at the North Avenue Station of MRT 3.

adverg January 22nd, 2009, 03:24 AM I think this big business people had already anticipate or might be in connection with the APD plan by the government. I am not sure if the government still have this since from time to time change of leaders is also change of plans. Unlike in American I think since 40 years ago, when they do the urban planning, they have this apd for future expansions. Kagaya rin what I heard when I was young duon sa marcos highway one businessman already know that in the future magiging highway yuon kc dati gubat yan and nobody expect it will turn into highway. Ayun bumile kaagad siya ng lupa and when it was converted into highway yung lupa niya malapit talaga sa highway nagpatayo ata ng apartments. Ngayon the value of it is how many times the amount he purchased before. This kind of people are smart enough on how to play for future visions.

A Chinese New Year extravaganza up north
WITH its exciting new look, SM City North Edsa celebrates the Chinese New Year in a grand way, with an extravaganza of larger-than-life exhibits, traditional lion and dragon dances, and tips from some of the country's top feng shui masters.
It is said that the Year of the Ox brings prosperity through fortitude and hard work. Welcome the coming New Year—and add more luck—in a big way with SM City North Edsa's one-of-a-kind exhibits. At The Block, the "Longest Tikoy" will be unveiled on January 23 at the mall's atrium. Long a symbol of Lunar New Year festivities, this traditional rice cake—when viewed from the top—will take the shape of lucky Chinese symbols.
At the newly opened Annex, mall goers will have the rare opportunity to view the Golden Buddha Exhibit from January 23 to 31. Everything is big in the world's third-largest mall, as a gigantic Chinese Checkerboard will be displayed at the Activity Area of the Annex's fourth floor from]anuary 24 to 29, with actual games being played on January 24 and 15.
Two top feng shui experts, Maritess Allen and Prof Charlie Chao, will also give shoppers tips for a prosperous Year of the Ox.
Chao will share his feng shui expertise at the mall's Event Center on January 25, from 1 to 3 pm. A member of the International Institute of Chinese Esoteric Studies Inc., Prof. Chao is regarded as one of the country's top feng-shui masters.
He says the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony is only part of a bigger picture, and only God helps good people who help themselves. Feng shui, he says, acts as a catalyst for self-improvement.
World of Feng Shui president and CEO Maritess Allen will share her feng shui expertise with shoppers at the Atrium of The Block on Chinese New Year, January 26, from 3 to 5 pm.
Allen, who credits her triumphs over early personal adversity to the practice of feng shui, has made it her life work to share this with others so they can achieve financial and personal success. She has been a practitioner for over 15 years now and says that the purpose of feng shui is to attract positive life energy, or chi, so that it "flows smoothly, unblocking any obstruction in the body and the environment."
Capping the festivities is the traditional lion and dragon dance that will go through The Block, the City Center and The Annex.

dvbaicrviser January 25th, 2009, 07:16 AM A FIRST FOR NATIONAL ARTIST
Arturo Luz helps define a mall
By Rowena C. Burgos
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 23:01:00 01/24/2009
THE milestones of National Artist Arturo Rogerio Luz’s more than 50-year career will be seen at Ayala Museum and Greenbelt Art Park starting Feb. 3.
Titled “Monumental,” the twin exhibition features Luz’s new paintings in yellow, red, orange and blue in the museum and large-scale abstract sculptures in the park. They are variations on or revisits of his past themes—circus performers of the 1960s, anito figures in the early ’70s, and origami-inspired constructs of the late ’70s. The new Luz works were created between 2007 and 2009.
“The sculptures are made of welded steel and have to be fork-lifted,” said Luz. “It’s hard to appreciate size and weight unless people see things. This is the biggest I have ever had.”
“Monumental” is the first in a series of public art exhibits organized by Greenbelt, which bids to make art more accessible to the public and to generate greater awareness of the works of world-class Filipino artists.
“Putting up such huge creations in a place like Greenbelt has never happened,” said Luz. “I hope to be the first National Artist to do this consistently in great numbers and see them land in malls, outdoor spaces and parks.”
Luz noted that some of the world’s best sculptures have been displayed outdoors. He explained the ideal background for huge works is greenery.
But Luz lamented that none of the malls in the country display sculptures “because most of them are kuripot (stingy). When an architect tells a mall developer he’ll need P135 million to build a mall, the latter agrees. But when one is told to put artworks inside the building which will cost about P2 million, that’s when the disagreement comes in. That is the story of Philippine public art.”
What, to him, is an ideal mall? “The secret to a mall would be the shops you put inside. It’s not the building but the quality of tenants.”
‘Semi-’ artist
A painter, sculptor and designer (jewelry and even, at one time, barong), Luz was named National Artist in Visual Arts in 1997.
Luz is best known for his linear art and his series on street musicians, vendors, cyclists and carnival performers. He is also known for his wood, concrete and metal sculptures. His works are marked by meticulous simplicity and restraint, with subdued colors and understated form.
Luz describes himself as “semi-representational, semi-abstracted.”
“My works are semi-representational in the sense that sometimes the subject is recognizable; many times, it’s not, so that makes it abstract,” Luz said. “I did abstracts for 20 years but I starved to death.”
“Semi-abstracts are acceptable to more people,” Luz added. “When people look at abstracts, they get uneasy because they don’t understand it. And then they ask, ‘What does it mean?’ My answer is ‘It has no meaning.’ That disturbs them even more.”
Luz said many media people “hate” him “because I never explain my works. I don’t feel compelled to explain what I do. I want people to guess what they are. That’s why I don’t give interviews.”
What’s the secret to his endurance—in art and in life?
Work. Luz, 82, paints seven days a week. Once a week, he does sculpture. He starts his day from the moment “I open my eyes” and works “until I get very sleepy at night.”
Fun dancing
And—Luz is into Latin dances but his favorite is mambo. “Dancing is much nicer and more fun than walking,” he said. “Every man has the obligation to dance well. I have been to many balls and parties and have seen husbands who sit like ducks. It’s pathetic.”
Once, Luz invited Lor and Pabling Calma to go dancing with him. He reserved two dance instructors, but his artist-friends never showed up. “They got scared,” Luz said, laughing.
When he got hooked on dancing, he would go three to four times a week to the club and stay there until 2 a.m. Now, it’s down to once a week. “I’m surprised my wife (theater’s Tessie Ojeda Luz) never divorced me,” he said, admitting he never went to the dances with his wife for he finds it “boring.”
But he’s proud to say that in their 46-year marriage, they’ve had only two minor arguments. “We just can’t remember what we argued about. But, I think, the secret to a lasting relationship is that both should never be angry at the same time. Learn to be understanding of one another.”
Painter’s painter
Luz is much admired by fellow painters. The late Fernando Zobel de Ayala had called him “a painter’s painter.” He noted that, when a Luz painting was offered for sale, which was seldom because of the painstaking nature of the artist’s work, the buyer was often another painter. “Where other painters shout at the top of their voices,” Zobel wrote, “Luz speaks in a whisper and, insidiously, gets a great deal more said.”
When asked who he thinks would be the next National Artist, Luz said, “The person who is desperate to become a National Artist will not become one. But the one who is the least interested in getting such award will be named National Artist.”

OT break:
and speaking of roller coasters, according to the roller coaster database (www.rcdb.com) there are only 7 registered roller coasters in the country... most of them built inside malls.
Enchanted Kingdom (Sta. Rosa, Laguna Philippines)
Star City (Pasay, Manila Philippines)
Storyland (Cebu City, Cebu Philippines) <<-- I think this is closed now
Storyland (Quezon City, Manila Philippines)
Storyland (Las Piñas City, Manila Philippines)
Worlds of Fun (Cainta, Rizal Philippines)
X-Site Teen Amusement Center (Muntinlupa, Manila Philippines)
(the list does not include collapsible RCs like the ones built at global fun or boom na boom or the infamous Carnabal sa Circle )

you shoud've seen how crowded Storyland was during the holidays, you'd have to wait at least 45 mins in line just to get ride passes. my pamangkins are big fans of the place... it's really a welcome development up north in the metro... And it completes the SM experience up in Fairview.
fun fact: the marching band that are now regulars at SM MoA originally marched around the halls of SM Fairview (and maybe at Southmall) for months way back in 2000 just to promote the opening of Quezon City's only indoor theme park.
it's been 8 years since it opened to the public, I practically grew up with it... it really deserves a theme change.

The Venetian Mall Update by @--SuperB0y--
Where exactly is this mall located?
jaygold06 January 29th, 2009, 05:52 AM Where exactly is this mall located?
Sa Mckinley Hill. Malapit lang sa The Fort. May shuttle bus din sila from edsa ayala papunta doon.:)
sanmig January 29th, 2009, 05:57 AM ^^
I think that mall is located at one mckinley hill fort bonifacio taguig just right after American cemetery.
Our company supplied to Woodridge projects also located at same site...
renzdaniel434 January 29th, 2009, 08:25 AM ^^ hindi pa rin ba bukas ang basement?
hindi pa ako nakakabalik ng annex2 for two weeks
:lol::lol::lol:
sakatunayan inaalis lahat ng tiles papalitan siguro ng bago.
renzdaniel434 January 29th, 2009, 10:14 AM According sa SM 3 day sale susunod na yata ang SM Sta. Mesa sa Feb 13-15 tapos yung SM Fairview sa February 27-28 March 1
mygz14 January 29th, 2009, 10:37 AM You mean this view? Can anyone post a photo before Glorietta 5 was built?
Taken from Starbucks at G4

Is that black thing located at the wall of G5 a multimedia screen? I saw a similar screen at Eastwood.
jmok January 29th, 2009, 12:12 PM Ang ganda ng Venetian mall.Impressive yung design,,Sana isunod na nila i construct yung gondola ride/effect...haha
in_a_rush January 29th, 2009, 02:38 PM Sa Mckinley Hill. Malapit lang sa The Fort. May shuttle bus din sila from edsa ayala papunta doon.:)
:)
stanleymalls January 29th, 2009, 03:31 PM Ang ganda naman nung Venetian Mall...
Minus the office buildings, a perfect place to chillax! :okay:
I also like the fact that it is very detailed.....
Parang pinattern siya sa Eastwood CityWalk.... :?
Il Tenore January 30th, 2009, 01:58 AM ask lang po ako...
about sa Kipling, ilang branches na ba in Metro Manila?
thanks!;)
nayki January 30th, 2009, 03:26 AM ^^I know there is one branch in SM North EDSA "The Block". Not sure how many.

They're from the same developer, Megaworld. And like its predecessor, it would have BPO offices around to complement it.
in_a_rush January 30th, 2009, 08:41 AM ^^ Mckinley hill is better planned than Eastwood. sobra siksikan mga buildings sa eastwood e. i hope in the near future, matapatan ng megaworld ang Ayala in developing malls. they have a lot of u/c and proposed malls like newport, chinatown and this venetian mall. pati na rin siguro sa e-city. so aggressive!

ona January 31st, 2009, 07:27 AM My Review of Glorietta 5: "Ayala has gone boxy...maybe a little too boxy"
Exteriors:
Looks designed in the 90's. Too simple - Ayala could have done a lot more to improve the design.
General Interiors:
"Waltermart Makati looks even more beautiful than this...don't even try comparing this to SM City North's The Annex because SM's latest effort is in a much higher level"
Circulation:
The positive thing is that Ayala has managed to maximize the space because of the grid layout of the design.
Walls:
Glass facade interspersed by concrete columns. Very simple.
Flooring:
TriNoma's tiles would look like a masterpiece compared to the tiles of G5. G5's tiles Look & feel like PLAIN CEMENT!! The only way I knew they weren't is when I saw the thin lines that made a grid pattern on the floor, then I realized they were really tiles!:ohno:
Shops:
Almost the same shops as the ones in Ali Mall. One of the few bright spots are the good dinning selections on the mall & some of them face the park fronting Glorietta 4.
In General:
The mall addition should have been called "The Depot".
thomasian January 31st, 2009, 07:54 AM ^^ That doesn't sound good. But I guess it was because the project needs to be rushed so they can start with the glorieta redevelopment, ASAP. They can always renovate it anyway, design is not much of a problem at this point, it's the function that matters, and that would be to house the tenants of Glorietta 1 (including G2 and PS2) so they can proceed with the redevelopment.
ona January 31st, 2009, 08:00 AM ^^Yun din yung naisip ko...G5's purpose is to house dislocated tenants affected by Glorietta's renovation. But even so with what happened to G5 it seems Ayala is already feeling the bite of "The Global Financial Crisis". My hopes for the renovation of the whole Ayala Makati complex is still high though.

Gawin nilang THX, if possible, gawin nilang stadium style, LaZ.

Believe me...SM North Edsa doesn't need the LRT to compete at the moment, the Sky-Garden would be enough to level the playing field for 2009. Dudumugin ng tao yang SM Sky-Garden. Pag nagbukas yang LRT at lalo na yang Grand Terminal, the playing field will be in favor of SM North unless TriNoma unleashes its secret weapon along the lines of a TriNoma Annex (w/ Rustans), Hypermarket at Sky-Garden 2 on top of the current Parking lot fronting SM???
SM North Edsa vs. TriNoma vs. Eton Centris

alexcerado February 1st, 2009, 04:09 AM The “Battle” of the cinemas begins
by AUC. February 01, 2009
Philippine movies became more productive when SM Cinemas (West Avenue Theaters Corporation), the largest movie exhibitor in the Philippines, opened their first branch on 1987 at SM North Edsa shopping mall, the first and true “supermall” in the Philippines, with eight wide screens, state-of-the-art sound and a new taste for movie lovers.
It’s in the middle of the crisis, after the historical Edsa Revolution, and the reformation of the government, but West Avenue Theaters didn’t mind it, continued their dreams of becoming the largest movie operator in the Philippines. After four to five years operation in SM North Edsa, SM decided to add 4 additional theaters at the mall’s annex.
From that time, SM Cinemas at SM North Edsa became the avenue for the premiere nights and advance screenings events of both local and foreign films, and became the den of the producers and distributors who wanted their movies to gross high as much as possible, a box office hit and much better if a blockbuster hit. After a few years, SM Cinemas opened more branches around the metro and around the country.
Although SM Cinemas opened their doors for new branches in Megamall, Sta. Mesa, Manila and Cebu, and other movie operators such as Robinsons Movieworlds at Ermita and Galleria, SM North Edsa cinemas continued of becoming the template of the producers wanting a big income and impact from the people. A single showing of a box office movie in 12 movie houses at SM North Edsa can gross an amazing P10 million, prior to its 300, 000 visitors a day, proving that nothing beats the “first and original” cinemas inside a mall. Some of the movies gave SM North Edsa the title as the top grossing theater in the country are Spider-Man film series and Harry Potter installments.
The auditorium styles of Sy’s cinemas were applied in all their branches nationwide. SM Cinemas reigned, with almost 150 theaters operating nationwide, as the competition also rises between the cinema operators nationwide.
Other cinema operators in our country didn’t follow Sy’s plan, else, made their own piece, by stadium-style cinemas that can be found in Araneta Center’s Gateway Mall, Powerplant Rockwell and Shangri-La Cineplexes. Robinsons Movieworld followed them, converted their Robinsons Galleria and Robinsons Ermita theaters from auditorium styles to stadium styles. And it works!
The fireball of hot tensions rise in 2007 as Ayala Malls introduced TriNoma, the new kid on the block in front of SM North Edsa, the most populous and most profitable mall of SM, with their very exciting anchors, including 8 state-of-the-art cinemas, that beat the longtime leader SM North Edsa in terms of exhibiting foreign movies.
Trinoma topped the list of the best performing theaters in 2008 movies such as “National Treasure”, “Jumper”, “10, 000 BC”, “Prince Caspian”, “Hancock”, “The Dark Knight”, “High School Musical”, “Quantum of Solace” and 2009 movies realeased this January namely “Bedtime Stories” and “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans”. Meanwhile, SM North Edsa also joined the Top 10 list of all the said movies, but never got its original title as the “Top Grossing movie house” in the Philippines. The guys from TriNoma are surely packed with sunny faces, after the results that their new LaZ seats theaters are number 1.
Ric Camaligan, vice president of SM Leisures, acknowledges that Trinoma has overtaken SM City North Edsa in movie ticket sales. “The mall is new and as we know, we like to try what’s new,” he says.
“We’re retooling some,” Camaligan says. “We’ve converted one of the theaters in The Block [on SM North] into a digital 3D screen, a downsized version of the IMAX at the SM Mall of Asia. We also added digital projection in some of our theaters to accommodate digital films.”
Now on, TriNoma is the country’s top money maker, becoming the benchmark for a movie to be a big hit.
A spokesman of one movie distributor cited Trinoma’s good location (it has a direct access to the commuter train that runs the length of North Edsa to Edsa/Taft and it’s the loading/unloading stop for buses plying the Baclaran-Monumento-Meycauayan route) and the multiplex’s well-designed theaters and state-of-the-art projection and sound (all theaters are digital with one THX certified) as the biggest come on for audience that wants value for money.
But the people behind SM North Edsa are planning for a new trick, to grab their original title from the new kid on the block. They’re planning to renovate the whole mall including the mall’s cinemas, starting from the opening of the Annex to their Sky Garden, said to be more beautiful that TriNoma’s garden site and to the new face of the whole mall, the new face of SM North Edsa.
A new LRT station will also open soon at SM North Edsa, with 1, 000, 000 customers a day, connecting LRT from Monumento to the mall. The people of Trinoma are maybe struggling right now, thinking of their future plans to keep the former people of SM North and their current people, and how can they retain their title.
Additional headache for TriNoma is the upcoming IMAX Theater on SM North Edsa. The plan is all set, renovating the Cinema 4 of The Block to a 800 seat-IMAX Theater for P500 admission, hoping that this would bring people to the original cineplex in the Philippines.

(Thumbs up) TAKING shape above the clutter of Edsa is a one-of-a-kind wonder in the metropolis. It’s a Sky Garden that snakes around SM North Edsa, from The Block to the Annex.
It’s a good sign that even mall developers are trying to create a natural landscape—a vast expanse of greenery that should give weary urbanites a chance to breathe. Metro Manila is a megapolis gasping for air.
At last, here is a design that should give mallrats their much needed oxygen supply.
Spanning almost 16,000 sq m, it will be lined and dotted with trees and foliage—perfect for absorbing the smog around. A waterfall (man-made, of course) is at the end of this winding promenade.
Retail stores and restos in sleek glass-and-steel pavilions will rise in the Sky Garden.
The centerpiece of this development is an ampitheater with a skylight atrium. Designed to be the prime events venue of the north, it will have panoramic lights, which should make it quite a sight at night.
The Sky Garden, which is due to open in April, should give mall-goers a fresh view of the cityscape, no matter the congestion.

SM North Edsa Grand Revenge...este Relaunch has just begun...there's more to come
1. Imax Construction & Cineplex renovation
2. City Center (former main mall) interior renovation
3. Relaunch of SM Bowling Alley & Bingo Center at SM "The Annex"
