Friend, you better stop going to SM... natatakot lang ako na when you become an architect you get boxed up to their standards and do nothing else but boxed up design. try hanging out at Power books and look for Retail Design books... there are more better ideas there than at SM. :D

Uy! Di naman. More on futuristic, edgy, and modern and nouveau architecture ang focus ko.....

Kita nyo naman, maliwanag pa yan, wait ka lang pag dilim at friday or weekends
Did i metion na SM ang gumawa nyan

Just to give you an idea how large SM Fairview is now:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/mbassy2003/SM/SMperbsareal.jpg
Source: SCMC/Philippine Star

currently, it has both the largest SM Supermarket and SM Hypermarket among everyone-else in the chain... so... in conclusion, Fairview peeps are Grocery Crazy!!

HUWAW!!! :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: OMG!!! Ang ganda!

Kahit MoA at NoE pa?

^^ o gosh.. so nice... thanks kenneth, very nice find... :applause:
gaganda na ang monumento area niyan...

^^ this area has so much potential, once mrt-7 is built.. this area will populate.. i expect some high-rises to be built here courtesy of smic at that time...

Sana buong roundabout ng Monumento i-redevelop. Ang dumi tignan, even from afar. Disorganized.

estimate ko diyan (gamit ang google earth), almost 1/2km ang lalakarin mo kapag pupunta ka from transport terminal A > B :)

merong business park sa likod ng SM Fairview...
kaso wala pang laman :ohno:...
siguro kapag nagawa na ang MRT7
dadami na mga business establishments sa area na yan
kaso ayusin muna nila traffic management sa loop lalo na sa belfast
nagkakatraffic kasi lagi doon

Yung curve kasi from Quirino to Belfast, hindi maayos. If SM Fariview would be willing, ibigay nila kahit konti nung sidewalk, kasi yun yung napansin kong sagabal sa traffic.

Yung business park, ako na bahala jan!

May balak ba na iextend itong foot bridge sa Trinoma mall?Kasi kung titignan mo siya mag naka abang na exposed beam edge nya. Anyway gagawa naman ang Trinoma ng connecting bridge from Grand Station(which is directly conmnected to SM) to Trinoma.

May balak, kaso di pa rin ginagawa ng Trinoma.

Finally, an SM in Caloocan. That will be a nice replacement to that gritty side of Monumento Circle.

Unfortunately, it will be a bane to nearby shopping centers like that mini-mall across the future SM (is it Araneta Plaza?) and of course Ever Gotesco Grand Central.

:ohno:

SM Caloocan is actually the old EVER Grand Caloocan... they will be refurbishing the complex and convert it to something like SM Cubao or Makati...

..this will make stanleymalls piss in his pants:

actual renders of his favorite mall... complete with a mini-essay describing the newest expansion. It says that the expansion will serve the upscale shopping and dining requirements of the mall.. (so that explains why Krispy Kreme is opening shop there!)

Tip! if you want to get these infos, start blogging! AFIK, an SSCer, Biyahilo also made a little blog entry about stan's fave mall. I hope biyahilo shares his photos here. :D

Awts. Ganyan talaga pag nasa society!

WOHOO!!! Ang panalangin ko, nasagot na! May KK na din sa wakas!!!

^ Nice photos of the already-looking-good SM North, Dex! :okay:

Tsaka it really blends well with the MMDA footbridges. :D

I think SM MOA is the best mall so far and number 2 would be trinoma...Ive never visited North Edsa so I don't know if it's that good...maybe this holiday.

You should. So you'd get the idea how SM evolved through time. :) :D

Teka. Asan nga pala si Trinoma? Miss ko na si Trinoma.

Sustainable development! :master:

;41794826']Wow, I like the Solenad :applause: A hint of Bonifacio High Street in a waterfront environment.

this is the first time I've seen a sky view of SM fairview it is indeed a very large mall and I'm sure with all the wide spaces around the mall SM developers will expand and turn this into the largest mall in the philippines bigger than SM north edsa or maybe the largest in the world.:)

Me too! Kahit na ako ang Hari ng Updates niyan. :jk:

Fact: SM Fairview is now the 6th largest mall of SM in the Phils.

Yung expansion siguro pag construction na ng MRT7.

Sana SM or Ayala mag-develop nung Business park dun sa likod. Walang enta Sta. Lucia. Andami tuloy grass.....

actually hinde... SM is going CFLs... they're going green narin... slowly they are replacing their metal halides to CFLs at most of their malls. :D

Fairview is one. :D

Both of you are sarcastic. Akala niyo lagi kayong tama.. kayo ang hari.. (or REYNA?) nakakainis lang kasi ang isa sa pinakagustong tao dito sa SSC, which is ONA, ay pinilit niyong maban. simula non, wala nang gana ang Mega Metro Manila Malls. And halata namang biased kayo, ayaw nyo sa SM North Edsa, and may kinakampihan kayo. Don't deny it, di naman ako mangmang sa inaakala niyo. Kung wala akong silbi, MAS WALA kayong SILBI.

MOA's newest attraction features streamlined architecture

The sleek architecture of Oceana was inspired by the venue's panoramic view of the bay.
The sleek architecture of Oceana was inspired by the venue's panoramic view of the bay.

The latest and hippest place to rise in the Mall of Asia complex in Manila is also shaping up to become both a fitting tribute to modern Philippine architecture and a popular venue for important gatherings and events.

Oceana, the Center for Culinary Arts (CCA, Manila) Restaurant School and Events Place has emerged as a stunning bayside attraction with its lineup of seafood cuisine, a center for culinary learning, and an events venue that can accommodate various occasions.

Presently in charge of the events place is Catherine Ong from C3 Events Place also under the Cravings Group. Ong said that the design of the 350-capacity events area was inspired by the stunning view of the bay provided by architects Cathy Saldaña and Alan Casas of PDP Architects.

“Events managers have been attracted to this venue through Oceana’s outstanding architecture and interiors that provide a versatile setup for various affairs,” said Catherine.

This rich inspiration affords space that is bright and airy, with a predominantly white motif and a clean, streamlined look that exudes a day in the beach.

Accents on walls are reminiscent of patterns cut on ornate pastillas wrappers while the ceiling borrows the form of waves coming to shore. Functional and aesthetic lighting is achieved through elegant drop lights made of glass spheres that mimic bubbles blown from underwater.

PDP Architects also designed the furniture that is distinct to Oceana. To provide a contrast against the white and streamlined look of the restaurant, the tables have curved silhouettes and the upholstery of the chairs is in aqua.

“The magnificent view of the bay meanwhile is utilized as a natural backdrop that enhances the ambience, unveiled by a glass wall for a picturesque frame. This effect can be used to invoke a beach-themed reception minus the hassles of long drives, heat, and sand in one’s shoes,” explained Ong.

The open kitchen concept of the restaurant adds a new dimension to Oceana. Mosaic tiles are put on the walls, good lighting is employed and mirrors are hung from the ceilings and walls similar to laboratories of culinary schools.

Located at the plush hub of Seaside Boulevard and within the vibrant SM Mall of Asia complex, Oceana and its innovative concepts is set to raise the bar of culinary arts education in the country while offering a truly unique learning and dining experience.

MANILA - Real estate giant Ayala Land Inc. and state-owned National Housing Authority (NHA) have entered into a joint venture deal to develop the 29.1-hectare North Triangle Property in Quezon City into a central business district.

The joint venture marks the conclusion of a public bidding for the project that began on October 3, 2008, Ayala Land said in a statement.

Based on the proposal that Ayala Land submitted to the government, the North Triangle Property will be developed as the Philippines' first transit-oriented mixed-use business district that is well-planned, integrated and environmentally balanced.

The project is estimated to cost P22 billion, inclusive of future development costs and current value of the property, which Ayala Land and NHA will contribute as their respective equity share in the joint venture. The parties expect to start construction in 2 years.

Aside from generating fresh jobs and revenues for the government, the new development will help the NHA in achieving its mandate of transforming non-performing assets into income-generating ones, and providing housing for informal settlers. The NHA is set to relocate thousands of families presently occupying the property.

"Ayala Land's track record, strong branding, and ability to attract top locators will ensure that the development will achieve its highest potential value," the company said.

In the development and management of business districts, Ayala Land's signature projects include the master-planned Makati business center, Bonifacio Global City, Cebu Business Park, and Madrigal Business Park in Alabang, Muntinlupa.

Sy, Villar, Marcos allies in RP's 40 richest—Forbes [1]

MANILA - The recent Forbes Asia magazine’s accounting of the wealth of the Philippines’ 40 richest people just might be an indication of economic recovery.

Published last August 25, Forbes Rich List [12] showed that the total networth of the country's wealthiest has reached $16.4 billion, higher than last year's $14.2 billion.

Nine of the top 10 and 25 of all 40 in the list posted higher wealth compared to the previous list available last October 2008.

Forbes attributed this to signs of recovery as various industries benefited from continuously growing money sent home by Filipinos working abroad and healthy consumer confidence that kept Filipinos spending.

It also cited the 52% uptick in the Philippine Stock Exchange composite index since the beginning of the year and 67% increase since bottoming out in October 2008.

Share values are still 26% off the 2007 peak, but Forbes said the current levels are “enough to begin to turn around the fortunes of the country’s richest.”

Forbes based the networth calculation on share prices of companies listed in the stock market and an estimation of the worth of privately held assets if they were listed. The figures also included the share of the individuals in their family’s fortunes.

Share prices and exchange rates were based on prevailing rates as of August 14.

Mall power

Retail mogul Henry Sy again [13]topped the list. His wealth increased by $700 million more since Forbes’ last list in October 2008.

His current $3.8 billion networth was attributed to the appreciation of the share prices of his main holding family, SM Investments, which appreciated by 28% since October. SM Investments has stakes in banking, insurance, property, and malls.

The Sy family has the widest network of retail outlets—from malls to hypermarkets—nationwide. Four of his over 100 malls in the Philippines and China are included in the world’s biggest malls.

The wealth culled from the retail business has propelled a new entrant, Marian Rosario Fong, into the Top 40 list.

Fong, who grabbed the last spot, was a former partner of Sy's supermarkets and still has a 1% stake in SM Investments, Forbes noted.

These accounted for her networth of $38 million, which Forbes said is still higher than the $30 million networth of the person who held that last spot in October. The networth of the last on the Philippine list again made the Philippines the easiest to make in all 14 countries in Asia that Forbes tracks for its Rich List.

Meantime, tycoon Lucio Tan (#2) and Ayala conglomerate’s chairman emeritus Jaime Zobel de Ayala (#3) took the next slots.

Both used to clinch the top spot.

Tan, who is of Chinese descent, has interests in tobacco, beer, and banking. He is also in highly regulated industries, including aviation. Philippine Airlines, where he has a controlling stake, has been having financial troubles [14] as it faces tougher competition and after hedging fuel supply when prices reached record highs last year.

On the other hand, Zobel de Ayala, who is of Spanish descent, has left the day to day management of his family’s interests in property, retail, banking, telecommunications, and water to his children. He is now an art advocate and is into photography.

Business and politics

A notable member of the top 10 is Sen. Manuel Villar (#9) who is a May 2010 presidential aspirant. He has interests in real estate, which includes listed home developer Vista Land and Lifescapes.

Villar and his wife, Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Villar, have been topping the list of richest solon [15] with a P1.05 billion combined networth as of 2008.

However, Forbes calculate his current wealth at $530 million or about P25 billion.

Richer than Villar are two more politically connected individuals: Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. ($660 million, #7) and Enrique Razon Jr. ($620 million, #8).

Razon is into the ports business through International Container Terminal Services Inc. He emerged into prominence due to his closeness with First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, a golf buddy. Razon also helped in a recent campaign of senatorial aspirants who are allies of President Gloria Arroyo.

The closeness of the Arroyo couple and Razon is apparent as the latter would even include official visits to countries like Brazil [16]and Syria, which have little trade or migrant labor relationship with the Philippines. Razon recently started operating ports in these countries.

Razon also won a concession for the power transmission business, a recently privatized monopoly. Roberto Coyuito Jr. ($290 million, #18), who was recently part of the consortium behind the transmission business, also made it to the Forbes list.

Razon and Coyuito’s consortium was previously dragged to court by nickel businessman Salvador Zamora II for allegedly being favored by the state agency overseeing the bid. Zamora and his partners eventually lost the bid.

Zamora’s $20 million fortune last year put him at the 32nd slot. This year, Forbes lumped his wealth with that of his brother, Manuel Zamora.

The Zamora brothers’ combined $110 million networth pushed them to the 27th slot.

Marcos’ allies

Cojuangco was an ally of former President Ferdinand Marcos who allowed Cojuanco to monopolize commodity businesses in the Philippines, including coconut. About 20% of diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corporation, which he controls, is still under litigation for allegations of ill-gotten wealth.

Cojuangco made a bid for the presidency in 1992 but lost. He has since focused on regaining and growing San Miguel, and has become a kingmaker of sorts. He is currently chairman of the political party Nationalist People’s Coalition.

Another Marcos ally that made it to the top 40 is Benjamin Romualdez ($70 million, #30), younger brother of Imelda Marcos. Romualdez is still battling various sequestration cases, but his sons are well-entrenched in politics and business: Benjamin heads a high-profile mining industry federation and Martin is a Lower House member as representative of hometown Leyte.

Martin Romualdez was recently dragged into a scandal for allegedly picking a $20,000 dinner tab [17]for President Arroyo and her entourage in a recent official visit to Washington. The dinner cost became hot topic amid increasing hunger [18]rates and widening national budget gap. [19]

One notch richer than Benjamin Romualdez is President Arroyo’s trusted ally Tomas Alcantara ($75 million, #29). Forbes considered his interests in mining, power, property, energy, and agriculture, all housed under Alcantara Group. Alcantara is said to have migrated to Canada.

Forbes also noted David Consunji (#17) as one of the big gainers. The stock price of his construction firm, DMCI, has doubled, propelling his networth by $300 million. This figure is $200 million more that his networth last year.

DMCI’s mining related assets may have not grown as much due to declining mineral prices, but it had been clinching deals left and right. It has already expanded into water and tollroad businesses, where it sealed partnerships with the likes of San Miguel Corporation and other Manlia’s biggest conglomerates.

Poorer and missing

Nine of the Top 40 are poorer than a year ago. This includes married couple Rolando and Rosalinda Hortaleza who founded personal care products company Splash.

The couple’s combined networth of $39 million was considerably lower than their $90 million last year. Forbes attributed this to the weak performance of Splash, best known for skin whitening products. Share price of Splash dropped by more than 50% since last October.

The Hortalezas slipped to the 39th spot this year from 27th last year.

Noticeably absent in the list this year is Manuel Pangilinan. He previously held the 37th slot in 2007 with a $35 million personal fortune and the 39th in 2008 with $39 million.

He is considered one of the highest paid executives in the country and the only professional who had been included in the Forbes list.

Pangilinan runs the leading telecommunications firm in the country, Philippine Long Distance Company where he represents the interests of Hong Kong-based First Pacific Holdings Inc. The latter is controlled by the Salim family of Indonesia.

Up to 80% of First Pacific’s investments are in the Philippines, essentially proving how much the Salims trust Pangilinan. Aside from telecommunications, Pangilinan has since clinched deals involving the juiciest businesses in the Philippines. Through another First Pacific unit, Pangilinan has added health services, property, water distribution, power distribution, tollroads, mining, media, and more to the business portfolio.--by Lala Rimando, abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak

Here's a longer article about the joint venture between Ayala Land and NHA for QC-CBD.

By Zinnia B. Dela Peña (The Philippine Star) Updated August 29, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Property giant Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) has entered into a joint venture agreement with the National Housing Authority (NHA) to develop a 29.1-hectare property in North Triangle into the Quezon City Central Business District (CBD) at an estimated cost of P22 billion.

The joint venture represents the culmination of a public bidding process conducted by the NHA which began on Oct. 3, 2008.

ALI’s proposal features the development of a new CBD in Quezon City similar to the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

The project, slated for construction within the next two years, is envisioned to be the Philippines’ first transit oriented mixed-use CBD that will help ignite the country’s engine of growth. It will be linked to at least three metro rail transit stations and has one of the most expansive Edsa frontages.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, ALI said the P22-billion budget includes future development costs and the current value of the property which ALI and the NHA will contribute as their respective equity share in the joint venture.

“ALI’s vision for the property is consistent with the mandate of the Urban Triangle Development Commission to rationalize and speed up the development of the East and North Triangles of Quezon City into well-planned, integrated and environmentally balanced, mixed-use communities,” the company said.

ALI said the proposal aims to benefit the NHA in achieving its mandate of providing housing for informal settlers and transforming a non-performing asset into a model for urban renewal.

ALI’s track record, strong branding, and ability to attract top locators will ensure that the development will achieve its highest potential value. In the development and management of CBDs, ALI’s signature projects include the master-planned Makati CBD, Bonifacio Global City, Cebu Business Park, and Madrigal Business Park in Alabang.

The plan of the Quezon City government to develop the 250-hectare North and East Triangle into a commercial district is expected to spur job creation and increase revenue.

According to the Quezon City website, the plan is to organize the CBD into five distinct commercial/residential/ recreational districts – The Triangle Exchange, The Residences at Veterans, The Downtown Hub, The Emporium and The Commons. It will have a mix of housing, from high-rise condominiums to medium and lower density dwellings and high-end malls, business

offices, entertainment parks, and corporate headquarters.

The 54.3-hectare Triangle Exchange will be a high-traffic commercial and residential district and the most active area of the Triangle Park.

The 40-hectare Residences at Veterans will be a mixed-use community housing condominiums and row houses, while the 54-hectare Downtown Hub will be a mixed-use, medium-density district with institutional services and facilities integrated with commercial and residential development.

The 37.9-hectare Emporium will be another mixed-use, medium-density district focused on call centers and commercial and residential developments.

The 19.8-hectare The Commons will have residential developments and recreation and entertainment establishments. Quezon City has maintained its status as the richest and most business-friendly city in the country. It has become the new information and communication technology destination not only in the country but in Southeast Asia, with the opening of the University of the Philippines Techo park, the Philippine version of Silicon Valley in the US.

Quezon City is now home to 24 PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone Authority) information technology parks and zones with more than 70 business process outsourcing locators.

No... this is a new building facing Ayala Avenue but is connected to Glorietta 4... Glorietta 1, 2 and Park Square was demolished to give way to Ayala Center redevelopment... half of glorietta was closed down so if you are going to and from SM Makati through Landmark, only Glorietta 3 & 4 is accessible through the activity center.

OT: i agree... para lang may maipagyabang yung iba, kahit hindi talaga afford, pumupunta sa mga upscale places.. malalaman mo ring "low-class" sila (sorry for the term) dahil sila yung kadalasang picture nang picture sa sarili nila, tapos background nila eh yung name ng place, para may proof kumbaga na nakapunta na sila dun...

i really hate those people... :bash::bash:
Uy yung picture ng picture sa magagandang places like some malls, hindi ka naman nag spend ng money in that manner. Madami dito may picture sa magagandang malls, like me, baka ma hurt sila (at ako na rin;joke). It's more like camwhoring or self-indulgence. Nothing wrong with having a remembrance of that place naman diba. Unless ipagyabang ng bonggang bongga.

Iba naman yun sa mga trying hard

What's wrong with that? They also have the right to go anywhere even though they are what you call the "can't affords". Good for you, you can afford dining in posh restaurants, buy things and enjoy these high end places can offer. Those who do not have the means to really feel the luxury of these places just console themselves in taking pleasure in having there, watching what they see is awesome. It's the only thing they can do and afford. We should pity them not hate.

Taking pictures to serve as souvenirs is not a sin nor unlawful. I do that whenever I go abroad. I guess most of us are fascinated with new and beautiful things, such that we tend to take pictures to serve as mementos.

Let them be. As long as they don't pester you, you have no right to hate them!

By the way, those are really nice pics.

Comment dun sa pinag-uusapang pagiging feeler ng mga can't afford kuno:

If you have the cash to buy it, go! Walang pipigil.

Kung gusto mong mgapakasosyal, at afford mo, go!

Kung wala at picture dito picture doon ang type mo, go! As long as wala kang inaaabalang tao, go!

Ali Mall: First Ever Shopping Mall Makes A Comeback
http://www.aranetacenter.net/2008/08press.php

Ali Mall in Araneta Center, which opened in 1976 as the country’s first ever mall, is once again the city’s “newest” shopping haven.

Named after legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali (who personally graced the opening of the mall), Ali Mall has recently undergone a major makeover that includes new state-of the-art cinemas and a new food court at the topmost floor.

To mark its soft opening last February 3, the Araneta Group management led by vice-chairman Judy Araneta-Roxas, Araneta Center Inc. chief operating officer Rene Dela Cruz, Pizza Hut Inc. chief operating officer Lars Peterson, and Uniprom Inc. chief operating officer Manny Atacador cut the ribbon to formally open the mall’s new Food Gallery and Cineplex.

Apart from its updated interiors, new escalators have replaced stairs to provide convenient access to all floors of the mall. Lush landscaping and wider sidewalks have also been added to create a more inviting and pedestrian-friendly streetscape. Also in the works is a bridgeway on the second floor that will connect Ali Mall to nearby SM Department Store.

To complement its new look, Ali Mall now also boasts of an upgraded merchandise mix as exemplified by one of its major anchors, Shoe Center, a total lifestyle outlet offering quality shoes and bags at value-friendly prices. Ali Mall is also home to some of the country’s best-known brands such as Adidas, Royal Sporting House, Plains & Prints, Folded and Hung, Marithe Francois Girbaud, Guess, Converse, National Bookstore, Rustan’s Expresslane, and Mercury Drug.

Apart from world-class shopping choices, the redevelopment has also given way to more exciting dining destinations. A wide array of culinary delights continue to be one of the mall’s main attractions showcasing well-loved food chains such as Pizza Hut, Tokyo Tokyo, The Old Spaghetti House, KFC, Hap Chan, Pancake House, Max’s, and Gerry’s Grill. Ali Mall also features the newest outlet of Starbucks Coffee as well as Dairy Queen’s 500th International Store.

Indeed, Ali Mall continues to be one of the finest shopping addresses around and is now at par with the newer malls throughout the country.

nope thats what i also thought before. until i went there and saw for myself. theirs is much better by leaps and bounds. Cinema in bkk is BIG serious business and more complex than ours. unlike here, malls dont have own cinemas, they rent their space to big name cinema operators, EGV and SF cinema group most notably.

Yeah, Philippine malls have optimized tenant mix for it's target market, EVERYTHING that you need is in one roof, yung tunay na one stop shop, operators listens to it's target markets like never before at mas mura paninda dito kumpara sa ibang bansa for the same brand at minsan di na rin nalalayo sa design.

One thing or malls lack: World-class architecture, inside and out. Some are getting there na...

After nyan, perfect na..

of course, matakot ka pag walang laman. it's not because they are monopolizing it, it is because there is a market for it. they wouldn't be opening up like mushrooms if no one is patronizing them. these brands would be damned if they didn't expand. but if you actually shop in SSI or SM, there is actually variety, you may find the same brands but with different merchandising mix branch to branch. it's not really about how many brands it offers but the people who has the capacity or will to buy. :D

They should have nice Cinemas because Thailand actually produces Local movies with quality at par with Hollywood (not story-wise but technically) , they actually have the market for it. that's why it's serious business... It also just so happens that post production in their country is cheap.

well if u take to account only the major cinemas located in top malls like in the above picture, most of the films are hollywood blockbusters same as here. most educated thais would patronize foreign than local more often than not. so same as here. i just really like what theyve done to their movie watching experience, just so grand and classy to a whole different level. i think its all about the design. they are more design conscious and funky and all

Excerpt from an article about the soon-to-open MarQuee Mall in Angeles, Pampanga

Ayala officials said Marquee Mall will also be home to an inter-modal transport terminal for buses, jeepneys, AUVs and tricycles, upgrading accessibility and turning it into a major regional convergence area. When this writer asked if this was inspired by their TriNoma Mall’s nearby competitor SM North EDSA’s Sky Gardens atop its new inter-modal transport terminal  , the Ayala executives said that TriNoma is also now constructing and improving its facilities for public transport.

On the subject of TriNoma, which is the favorite of executives Añonuevo and Bengzon since they live in Quezon City, the Ayala officials said they envision building basement connections for cars similar to Ayala Center in Makati. Antonio Aquino said he foresees that five years from now, the dream of QC Mayor Sonny Belmonte and Councilor Ariel Inton for a new central business district (CBD) for Quezon City on government lands near TriNoma can be realized.

Wow Hermes! affordable for less than 1% of Filipinos. It's great to have a store in which the cost of a purse is enough to pay for tuition for 10 college students for one year. An achievement for any country.

I'm no fan of exorbitantly priced designer goods myself. But that (heavily taxed) purse will not only pay Hermes' employees and suppliers but also will pay for the rent of Ayala who will then pay their own employees, construction and maintenance crews, suppliers and stockowners, and also finance their investments and philanthropic projects. All of which eventually gets poured back into the economy either as salaries, taxes, expenses, or donations.

And luxury goods may seem superfluous to some, but their presence in a market is a good indicator for other investors of that market's strength and maturity. It's all connected. For example, Ayala's handling of LV and Gucci as tenants, may have helped them attract Raffles and Fairmont to put up their hotels, the construction of which may have contributed to LaFarge Cement expanding their capacity here, which may have helped the government get a better deal for the materials necessary for road projects.

Capitalism may be broken and founded on principles that foster inequality, but any developing economy has to play the game to a certain extent to get ahead.

Well said. Di ako bilib sa mga malls sa karatig bansa natin. Meron naman tayong malls na connected sa MRT like Shang mall, Trinoma and Ayala Center. Walang tatalo sa Greenbelt, Serendra High Street, Eastwood Mall, Power Plant and soon, magugulat tayo sa Ayala Glorietta.

Mall of Asia is one of a kind din, beside a bay.

kaya minsan tinatamad akong magmall dito sa japan kasi ang gulo ng layout ng mga malls nila. hinahanap ko pa rin yung parang sa atin na may department store, hardware store, food court etc.

true.... same with malls in hong kong and mainland china...
kahit yung watsons personal care store nila di ko maintindihan, ang gulo ng pagkaka-layout ng items sa store, very organized kasi yung Watsons dito sa atin.

the only Filipino brand I found in their Watsons stores is Likas Papaya soap.

i dont know ah haha. pero eastwood mall is great. it is adopting alot of designs u find in hongkong or bangkok. like the signages and lighting.

pero one big difference is that theirs are more classy. and also the people that go there dress better. there is a very exciting vibe into it. but theres only one thing unique to our malls, nowhere can u find malling culture to its truest form than philippine malls.

I think it's more of the American influence that it's okay to wear shorts and stroll outside kaya ang mga Pinoy ganito pag pumupunta sa malls.

I agree on this statement sa Bangkok, mga kuntodo make up ang mga girls, naka porma ang mga boys, kahit sa Jakarta, ang mga pumupunta sa malls ay well dressed talaga, walang naka shorts or slippers (rare).

i think the only mall in manila that attracts the more well dressed crowd like in bangkok is Rockwell. yes true its because of the american influence. although it is not a bad thing either, i would love to see more asian style in our malls since it represents the more modern and vibrant of the two.

that being said, im glad that our malls nowadays are constantly being improved on especially on looks and sophistication. i would love to see more shameless display of brand name goods side by side with a savvy mix of shoppers not ashamed to flaunt and add color to the scene.

siguro ang kulang sa GB3 ay yung cinemas nila mismo. there are only 5. dapat mga 10. hehe...

cinemas at GB5 (if your guess is right) will complement very well with the existing cinemas within GB. the only problem for me is the ticket price. GB3 tickets are already the priciest within Ayala Center.

I agree with the jobs and taxes point, but i don't think Ayala's maintenance of LV and GUCCI had much of an impact in attracting Raffles and Fairmont. I think the biggest contributor to putting up the hotel was demand.

Well the only way this country can improve on everything is if it is run like a private enterprise. Although we need to pay for everything but at least we get what we deserve and we get our money's worth. Unlike under a govt that is voted by the people where we get nothing even if we pay our taxes.

Private enterprise brought impetus to this forgotten area of makati with Alpha land mall...surely its incumbent on Binay to at least upgrade the area given the new commerce in the area...and the fact that new taxes are being levied which did not exist 3 months ago.

SM always put the arcades on the farthest reaches of the mall so that the section will liven and will always be crowded with people = positive energy. i.e. bottomest section in Megamall's basement. Corners of SM North's food court and 3rd floors.. Sometimes they put them in isolated spots like in SM Fairview.

In contrast to providing a relaxing/quiet place to stroll at, di nila yun na gets. For some reason, middle class people are noisy, try going to a high-end mall, you'll notice the relaxing difference...

signature na ata ng SM ang pagiging maingay...

It's true, the main reason why we seldom dine at SM. Some SM malls have entertainment centers near or within the food court. When we were young, we've been told to be solemn during every meal and to respect food as God's grace, that's why we find dining at SM very disturbing.

I've stumbled upon an article on a resolution/petition (not sure if it was a local gov't. or an NGO) to mall operators limiting the noise as this is not good to people's health. A mall must also be a place of relaxation and entertainment and not a source of stress. IMO. I think MOA's stretch of restaurants is a good dining place as compared to other SM malls.

Guys, i was in SM Megamall the last friday, I was amazed at the new flooring. it really made me say WOW. but the new flooring is only on the ground level and 2nd floor. maybe they will be starting on the other levels soon.

anyway, I browsed throughout the forums about the ice skating rink. I was surprised to see the that they have closed the rink for good. I don't know the real reason why. hopefuly, somebody can shed light on this.

Tycoon opens 35th mall Friday

By Doris Dumlao

MANILA, Philippines—Tycoon Henry Sy’s Prime Holdings Inc. is set to open on Friday (October 2) its 35th shopping mall in the Philippines—a 32,387-square meter brand new complex on Alabang-Zapote Road in Las Piñas.

SM Center Las Piñas, which is located in Barangay (Village) Talon, Pamplona, is SM Prime's second mall in Las Piñas City after SM City Southmall.

"With its vibrant economy and eco-friendly environment, Las Piñas provides a good venue for SM malls as we see a huge potential for growth and progress in the city," SM Prime president Hans Sy said in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange.

Las Piñas City is consistently recognized as one of the cleanest and greenest cities in Metro Manila and in the Philippines. The city was included in the Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project of the Asian Institute of Management.

The disclosure noted that Las Piñas was also internationally acclaimed for its love for the arts and music with its celebrated Las Pinas Boy's Choir and the historic Bamboo Organ, the only musical instrument of its kind in the world housed in Las Pinas Church.

The anchor tenants of the new mall are SM Hypermarket, Ace Hardware, Watsons, and Banco de Oro-Unibank. Other tenants include Jollibee, Savory Chicken, The Old Spaghetti House, and Inasal Chicken Bacolod, among others.

SM Supercenter Las Piñas also provides parking slots for over 500 vehicles and a terminal for public utility vehicles.

This brings to 35 the total number of SM Prime malls all over the country, with a combined gross floor area of 4.4 million sqm. It is the second SM mall to be opened in the Philippines this year after SM City Naga in Camarines Sur, which was inaugurated last May.

In addition, SM Prime also completed and unveiled earlier this year three expansion projects, namely the Sky Garden at SM City North Edsa, the SM City Fairview Annex, and the extension of SM City Rosales in Pangasinan.

Before the year ends, SM Prime is scheduled to open SM City Rosario in Cavite, thus closing the year with 36 local shopping malls. In addition, it has three shopping malls in mainland China.

SM malls suffer only minimal damage
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña (The Philippine Star) Updated October 01, 2009 12:00 AM
http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=510008&publicationSubCategoryId=66

MANILA, Philippines - Shopping mall giant SM Prime Holdings Inc. said the damage caused by tropical storm Ondoy was very minimal and had no effect on the company’s financial operations.

Jeffrey Lim, executive vice-president of SM Prime, said while there’s no actual estimate of the damage brought about by Saturday’s deadly typhoon, it was “very minimal”, pointing out that only the basement of its mall in Sta. Mesa, which houses the supermarket and the appliance store, was severely affected.

Lim, however, said its SM Sta. Mesa mall remains open to the public. “We’ve been trying to assess the damage caused by the typhoon since Saturday but it’s very minimal,” he said.

Lim said the company has maintained stable power suppy despite Saturday’s typhoon which dumped more than a month’s volume of average rainfall on Manila and surrounding areas in one 24-hour period, submerging 80 percent of the city.

Lim said it’s business as usual for SM Prime which is set to open SM Center Las Piñas – its 35th shopping mall in the country and its second mall in the city after SM City Southmall. The new shopping center, with a gross floor area of 32,387 square meters, is located along the Alabang-Zapote Road in Barangay Talon, Pamplona, Las Piñas.

SM Prime president Hans Sy said: “We warmly welcome all our loyal customers to our newest mall, SM Center Las Piñas. With its vibrant economy, and eco-friendly environment, Las Piñas provides a good venue for SM malls as we see a huge potential for growth and progress in the city.”

Las Piñas City is consistently recognized as one of the cleanest and greenest cities in Metro Manila and in the Philippines. It was also included in the Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project of the Asian Institute of Management.

The opening of SM Las PInas will bring the group’s total gross floor area to 4.4 million square meters.

SM Las Pinas is the second mall to be opened by SM Prime so far this year after SM City Naga which was inaugurated last May. The group is expected to open one more mall (SM City Rosario) before the end of the year to bring its total branch network to 36 with an estimated GFA of 4.9 million square meters.

For next year, SM Prime is looking at building a mall in Tarlac, San Pablo, Laguna, Calamba, and Commonwealth. It has set aside P12 billion in capital expenditures this year, P6.5 billion of which will be used to expand its operations domestically while the balance of P5.5 billion will go to its expansion in China. Three new malls in China – Chonggqing, Suzhou, and Zibo – are targeted for opening between 2010 and 2012.

This will add to its three existing malls - SM Xiamen, Jinjiang, and Chengdu.

Suzhou, with a gross floor area of 73,000 sq.m., is under construction and is expected to open early 2010. While Zibo and Chongqing, which has the biggest population in China) arescheduled to open in 2011 and 2012.

Yeah it's weird, that SM Center Las Pinas is no different with other Supercenters. Smaller one stop shops. Only the name changed? There's a new SM Logo that's circulating some print media as well. The SM That has a curved "M" with the first hump on "M" shorter and both letters slightly italicized is now straightened and aligned from top to bottom, and circled in blue with white background.

Must be minor errors.

Even before the flood, SM Sta. Mesa's food court + appliance center + supermarket's atmosphere and air quality is poor. Mabaho talaga, parang walang exhaust yung lutuan ng bawat food kiosk, parang nakukulob lang loob. Hopefully, may sense of smell ang supervisors ng mall at maaksyonan na.

Dapat noon pa nila pinaganda. Before, SM malls were only boxy buildings standing on lots without landscaping. Although, they had commendable attributes such as sprawling parking areas like those in Fairview, South Mall, Dasma, etc. I think MOA is the only SM mall planned with considerable greeneries inside and out.

The main mall is actually a delicate project that's why it is taking SM so long before they renovate it. the structure is not level. they have to figure out a way to retile and refurbish it without compromising its structural integrity.

Correct, specially the ground floor. Try to stand near Lucky Circle you may feel sudden shaking of the floors, it's that fragile. I feel something will give way if they do massive overhauls. I suggest idaan sa cladding or yung ginawa nila sa Department store, light materials lang.

P.S. How can you renovate when competition is in the air and low sales in the midst of a global recession may be compromised. This renovation will take a while.

yes.. di lang naman SM North EDSA ang under redevelopment or renovation.. most of the SM malls that are at least 8-10 years old now are having their own major facelift (interior and exterior) or expansions (annex buildings).

to sum up, malaki din yung damage na dala ng recent floods sa ilang branches in Metro Manila and Luzon that needs to be restored, they might prioritize the restoration/improvement of those branches muna before resuming the renovations and construction of new malls.
