;53925287']Your reasoning is flawed. Just because middle-class people can at one point in time splurge to buy something doesn't mean that what they are buying is "affordable" (or not expensive/"high-end") by any means. For instance, if a person who generally would belong in the middle-class income bracket buys a 300k ROLEX, his/her purchase does not conclude that ROLEX is not a high-end brand.

Also, don't confuse plain white shirts (which is what I know M&S would offer at 800) to be in the same category with what Bench can offer at the same price. And even if they did offer the same type of shirts at the same price, assuming you're correct, that doesn't take away from the fact that most of their products are still generally more expensive than other stores.

As for your argument that M&S etc. aren't high-end because they are in middle-class malls like SM Pampanga, let me use the same logical pattern to show you why you're argument is wrong again. California Pizza Kitchen is a restaurant geared for middle-class people because it is in Greenhills (which has many tiangges that would generally cater to the middle-class, although there are parts that cater to the higher income brackets). Outback is also for middle-class people because it is in Glorietta, which is the entry-level mall of Ayala in Makati. (yes, middle-class people can afford to buy in these restaurants once in a while, but more often than not, they will stick to more affordable restaurant chains like Teriyaki Boy - although some might not consider this as mid-range either)

Anyways, we all know your point - these aren't as "high-end" as other brands. At the end of the day, the term would remain relative and ultimately undefineable - although it will generally be understood as the majority opinion of what it really is. Point is, these aren't stores middle-class Filipinos would frequently buy in (simply because they aren't as affordable as other brands that are more prevalent in the market); thus, setting them apart from BENCH, HUMAN, Solo, etc.

I don't want to get off-topic. So let me get back on track :).
@kennethologist, do you have any idea as to when these improvements will happen in Southmall?

No. I'm not confusing a plain white shirt. The Shirt am describing is a Long sleeved polo shirt.

yah, SM Taytay is actually one of the most beautifully designed SM Mall... Zen inspired. It was designed in australia like SM Clark, SM Bacoor, SM Fairview, SM Marikina.

Eto na lang ang proof sa arguement ko.

SM Pampanga is not a high-end mall, but it has Marks & Spencer

Sta. Lucia Grand Mall is not High-end but it has Guess, Girbaud, Levi's and Dockers (These brands are basically at the same level of GAP and Lacoste. a pair of jeans in Girbaud and Levi's costs 2,500 up to 10,000)

i super agree with you

that is very true...

Sa tingin nyo bakit nagpalit ng logo ang SM to think na kumikita pa naman sila. Cost cutting kaya kasi mas mura yata yung "bilog na SM" kaysa dun sa customized na letter "S" at "M". What do you think?

sige nga, i did a little project. 30 min design lang... kunwari gagawan ko ng bagong logo ang SM... i noted their use of the circle and used that as the focal point of the design. and used a more contemporary font that still had some curvature seen in the old logo. and voila! a new SM logo! (disclaimer: this is not an official logo rendition/study or whatever, it's just for fun.)

but really, the old one's really special, it's as iconic as the Louis Yuitton logo or the Chanel insignia ...i really hope they wake up. :D

Mall Capital of Asia: When in Manila, Go Shopping
Mall capital of Asia: When in the Philippines, never mind the beaches _ go shopping
http://www.vcstar.com/photos/galleries/2010/mar/29/when-manila-go-shopping/9704/#section_header

The Philippines is known for many things: beautiful beaches, overseas workers and the multitude of shoes owned by former first lady Imelda Marcos.

The country is known for many things: beautiful beaches, overseas workers and the multitude of shoes owned by former First Lady Imelda Marcos but less known to the west is that the archipelago is a shoppers' dream, the home of three of the world's 10 largest malls. (AP Photo/Aaron Favila) Collapse
(AP)

But less known to the West is that the archipelago is a shoppers' dream, the home of three of the world's 10 largest malls. That's remarkable, given that the Philippines is about the size of Arizona.

Shopping, along with eating and basketball, is an important national pasttime. Filipinos take their malling so seriously that it's practically their only destination every weekend. Many of the malls in the metro Manila area are mini-cities, with department stores, supermarkets, theaters, spas and even an Olympic-size skating rink. Christian and Muslim religious services also are held at the malls.

Air-conditioned malls are a welcome escape from the tropical heat and humidity. Families and friends frequently spend entire days hanging out at one mall.

It's easy for English-speaking tourists to shop in Manila because the language is widely spoken. At flea markets, feel free to haggle.

The best deals are clothes, shoes and accessories. It wouldn't be hard to find a pair of jeans for $5 to $7 and summer dresses for less than $10. Bags, belts and high-heeled shoes can run you as little as $5, even at department stores.

Megan Lacy, a 22-year-old Indianapolis resident, found a bargain at Greenhills, in Manila's suburb of San Juan. She flew to the capital this past winter with her fiance, a Filipino-American, as a missionary from her church.

"The prices are very reasonable," said Lacy, who bought a freshwater pearl necklace and earrings for about $30. "This would easily cost me double back home."

But it's tougher to find bargains in electronics because they have to be imported from the U.S., Japan and elsewhere. One exception: You might consider buying a cell phone because it comes unlocked. That means you can use the phone with any U.S. carrier with a GSM network, such as AT&T and T-Mobile. It also works in Asia and Europe as a local phone number.
In this Sunday March 21, 2010 photo, shoppers look for bargain at Robinson's Place, a huge shopping mall in Manila, Philippines. The Philippines is known for many things: beautiful beaches, overseas workers and the multitude of shoes owned by former first lady Imelda Marcos but less known to the west is that the archipelago is a shoppers' dream, the home of three of the world's 10 largest malls. (AP Photo/Bullit Marquez) Collapse
(AP)

When shopping for clothes, be aware that sizes tend to run small to fit smaller Asian frames, although that's changing as fast food is making waistlines bigger. Shoes above size 10 often aren't available. Cotton fabrics also tend not to be pre-washed, so they'll shrink in the dryer. So that souvenir for your teenage son — "My parents went to the Philippines and all I got was this T-shirt" — could end up as a shirt for your 9-year-old.

Be sure to ask about the return policy before you buy. Most places won't give you a refund unless the product is clearly defective. It's good to carry cash because credit cards aren't as widely accepted as in the U.S., and ask for any kind of receipt and keep it. It's your warranty for returns or exchanges.

Besides shopping, another bargain stands out at the mall: going to the movies. New releases hit Manila shortly after being released in the U.S., and ticket prices are about $3. For a more upscale experience, the Platinum Cinema at Gateway Mall in the Cubao neighborhood of metro Manila lets you watch movies while lounging on a La-Z-Boy armchair. A movie ticket costs $7, and includes popcorn and soda.

Several malls have buffet restaurants as well as a food court, and you can get your fill of Filipino food, as well as other Asian and Western cuisines.

Here's a list of shopping centers to explore.

SM MALLS: For shopaholics, a must-do is the chain of SM malls that dot the city, such as Megamall. They truly are full-day destinations. You can start your day with breakfast at a Starbucks, shop for groceries, grab an Asian buffet lunch, get a hair cut and a massage, then relax with the family at the cinema — all without leaving the mall.

The SM Mall of Asia facing Manila Bay is the third-largest mall in the world with a gross leasable area of 4.2 million, according to a 2009 ranking by Forbes. Megamall, at 3.6 million square feet, and SM City North Edsa, at 3 million square feet and expanding, are the other two Filipino malls among the global top 10.

yup... major rezoning of the mall will happen. major anchors will be relocated and new stores will be added... SM will definitely go head to head with ATC in terms of tenant mix and mall design. kung baga sa pagkasosyal... it will become their third most sosyal SM Mall after MoA and Podium

I'm taking your word for this. SSI and also Topshop/Topman please. There's no Zara in ATC so they could have a winner if they could get it. And more restaurants as well - those that are not in ATC.

Problem is the space. Most of the higher-end brands require much bigger spaces.

IS MOA THE BIGGEST?

BANGKOK – Tens of thousands of protesters converged on Bangkok's shopping district on Saturday, forcing major retailers to close while accusing authorities of neglecting the poor on the 21st day of a mass rally seeking snap elections.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's embattled government deployed 50,000 soldiers, police and other security personnel in the city after caravans of the anti-government, red-shirted protesters travelled from rural areas to the Thai capital.

At least half a dozen shopping malls including Central World -- the second-largest shopping complex in Southeast Asia -- shut their doors in response to protests and threats by the "red shirts" to stay overnight in the usually bustling area popular with tourists and Bangkok's upper and middle classes.

continuing the list from my previous post:

11. golden resources mall (beijing, china)
12. siam paragon (bangkok thailand)
13. sm city cebu (mabolo, cebu city, philippines)
14. king of prussia mall (pennsylvania, usa)
15. mall of america (minnesota, usa)

the list above is for the largest shopping mall with regards to the gross leasable area. the largest mall in the world by area is the dubai mall in dubai, uae.

topshop/topman, if im not mistaken was brought to the philippines by Robinsons and not SSI. :)

SSI = Store Specialists, Inc. - Distributors of brands like Lacoste, Zara, Topshop/Topman and other sosyal brands here in the Philippines.

ATC = Alabang Town Center, an Ayala mall.

Syempre, para makasabay sa ibang Ayala malls, kailangan daw ng SSI store dito para winner! :lpl: Yun ang pagkakaintindi ko sa posts nila.

brands like topshop and topman are brought to the philippines by robinsons.
brands like lacoste, zara and other "sosyal brands" like marks and spencer, prada, gap and others are distributed by stores specialists inc.

moa is not the biggest shopping mall in the world.

according to wikipedia (i'm not sure if it's updated):

1. new south china mall (dongguan, china)
2. sm city north edsa (qc, philippines)
3. central world (bangkok, thailand)
4. sm moa (pasay city, philippines)
5. dream mall (kaoshiung, taiwan)
6. mall taman angggrek (jakarta, indonesia)
7. west edmonton mall (edmonton, canada)
8. the dubai mall (dubai, uae)
9. sm megamall (mandaluyong city, philippines)
10. berjaya times square (kuala lumpur, malaysia)

notice that 9 out of 10 are located in asia. 3 from the philippines. in addition to this, sm city cebu is ranked 13th.
actually, sm cebu is ranked 11th largest shopping mall........according to WIKIPEDIA

correct! ...Robinsons Specialty Stores Inc to be exact.

BTW, you'll know it's an SSI store when you see the nameplate of their staff... they all use the same nameplates across all brands they hold.

At least half a dozen shopping malls including Central World -- the second-largest shopping complex in Southeast Asia -- shut their doors in response to protests and threats by the "red shirts" to stay overnight in the usually bustling area popular with tourists and Bangkok's upper and middle classes.

If you look at SSI's webpage, you'll see that there are quite a number of SSI stores in ATC too. (Especially in Commerce Mall and Corte de Las Palmas)

What I think a lot of people in the south would like to have in ATC that isn't in ATC though is ZARA, which is also an SSI brand. I know a lot of people from Alabang who'd go all the way to Makati just to shop in ZARA :P

Asia's surprising shopping capital (http://www.smh.com.au/travel/asias-surprising-shopping-capital-20100408-ruby.html)

http://images.smh.com.au/2010/04/09/1301324/Manila-Shopping-Centre-420x0.jpg
At Glorietta shopping centre, prices are slightly higher, but still much cheaper than Australia.

The Philippines is known for many things: beautiful beaches, overseas workers and the multitude of shoes owned by former first lady Imelda Marcos.

Less known to the Western World, however, is that the archipelago is a shoppers' dream, the home of three of the world's 10 largest malls.

Shopping, along with eating and basketball, is an important national pastime. Filipinos take their malling so seriously that it is practically their only destination every weekend.

Many of the malls in the metro Manila area are minicities, with department stores, supermarkets, theatres, spas and even an Olympic-size skating rink. Christian and Muslim religious services also are held at the malls.

Air-conditioned malls are a welcome escape from the tropical heat and humidity. Families and friends frequently spend entire days hanging out at one mall.

It is easy for English-speaking tourists to shop in Manila because the language is widely spoken. At flea markets, feel free to haggle.

The best deals are clothes, shoes and accessories. It would not be difficult to find a pair of jeans for $US5 ($A5.40) to $US7 ($A7.55) and summer dresses for less than $US10 ($A10.80). Bags, belts and high-heeled shoes can run you as little as $US5 ($A5.40), even at department stores.

It's tougher to find bargains in electronics because they have to be imported from the United States, Japan and elsewhere.

When shopping for clothes, be aware that sizes tend to run small to fit smaller Asian frames, although that is changing as fast food is making waistlines bigger.

Few shoes larger than a size 10 are available. Cotton fabrics also tend not to be pre-washed, so they will shrink in the dryer.

So that souvenir for your teenage son - "My parents went to the Philippines and all I got was this T-shirt" - could end up as a shirt for your nine year old.

Be sure to ask about the return policy before you buy. Most places will not give a refund unless the product is clearly defective. It is good to carry cash, because credit cards are not as widely accepted, and ask for any kind of receipt and keep it. It is your warranty for returns or exchanges.

Besides shopping, another bargain stands out at the mall: going to the movies. New releases hit Manila fairly quickly and ticket prices are about $US3 ($A3.25).

For a more upscale experience, the Platinum Cinema at Gateway Mall in the Cubao neighbourhood of metro Manila lets you watch movies while lounging on a La-Z-Boy armchair. A movie ticket costs $US7 ($A7.55), and includes popcorn and soft drink.

Several malls have buffet restaurants as well as food courts, and you can get your fill of Filipino food as well as other Asian and Western cuisines.

Here is a list of shopping centres to explore.

SM MALLS: For shopaholics, a must-do is the chain of SM malls that dot the city, such as Megamall. They truly are full-day destinations. You can start your day with breakfast at a Starbucks, shop for groceries, grab an Asian buffet lunch, get a hair cut and a massage, then relax with the family at the cinema - all without leaving the mall.

The SM Mall of Asia facing Manila Bay is the third-largest mall in the world with a gross leasable area of 390,000 square metres, according to a 2009 ranking by Forbes. Megamall, at 330,000 square metres, and SM City North Edsa, at 280,000 square metres and expanding, are the other two Filipino malls among the global top 10.

GLORIETTA AND GREENBELT: In the swanky part of Manila, called Makati, you will find the Glorietta and Greenbelt shopping complexes. Prices here are higher than in SM, but still a lot cheaper than similarly luxurious stores in Australia.

Foreign business executives and Western tourists are more frequently sighted here, because the area is surrounded by five-star hotels and is in the heart of Manila's financial centre. After shopping, head for "The Spa" at Greenbelt 1, where an hour-long massage can cost just $US20. ($A21.60).

TRINOMA: Short for "triangle north of Manila," Trinoma is a sprawling shopping complex in the Quezon City neighbourhood of metro Manila. It is a rival to the SM malls and anchored by the Landmark department store, which has slightly lower prices and a wider selection than SM stores.

DIVISORIA AND 168: Tourists who want a more local, flea-market shopping experience, and even better prices, can head to Divisoria and the 168 shopping area. Shops here cater to the working class, or simply folks who want to pinch pennies. Kitchen items, underwear, clothes, shoes, fabric, designer knockoffs abound. It is not hard to find items from $US1 ($A1) to $US3 ($A3.25). But be prepared to fight crowds, and watch out for pickpockets and purse-snatchers.

kaya pala di ko alam.. di ko pa rin napupuntahan yung part na yan ng MoA..
hahah..

@pinoyako.. tnx tnx.. hehe

SM FAIRVIEW UPDATES
Try to look at the ATM Center facing the Quirino Highway. it red na.. and yung sa may hallway ng entrance at sa may gilid ng main mall bago na yung tiles.. BTW Nag start ng isara yung 45% ng 3rd Floor in preparations for the SM Cyberzone which will open on the 2nd-3rd week of June. and parang may plano pa silang ilagay sa may mga atrium try to look sa may main mall atrium

Been to SM Southmall kanina. Nakakaawa naman ang mall ngayon, kadalasan mga tambay ang nandun. Pa'no kasi, more than half of the mall is under renovation. So 'yung mga displaced tenants and a portion of the department store are selling on the hallways. On the bright side naman, I can feel na bonggang-bongga talaga ang renovation na ito kasi I noticed, 'pag nagrerenovate sila ng ibang SM malls, dahan-dahan lang, maliit na portions lang hanggang matapos ang pagrerenovate ng buong mall. Iba naman sa Southmall, sinasagad talaga at more than half ng mall ang nirerenovate, kebs na kung bumagsak ang pedestrian traffic at sales. This renovation is way overdue na talaga kasi sobrang 90s pa ang feeling sa Southmall. The restrooms don't look clean. The foodcourt and most of the mall look old, parang di pa talaga nagagalaw since it opened. Good luck! :)

Good luck! :)

nag renovate sila.. try to go sa site ng edge ata yun.. sila yung pasimuno ng itsura ng southmall ngayon.. nakita mo sa third floor may Divipark sila.. tapos magkaparehas sila ng railing sa baguio

This is actually SM Southmall's 2nd major renovation. Kaso the first renovation only involved replacements of tiles and signages plus those decorative things installed at the atriums. That was actually designed by the same team doing the renovations for SM City Fairview, Bacoor and Marikina. IINM, Kasabay ni Southmall noon si Sta Mesa mag-renovate... (so love talaga nila Edge...)

This latest renovation is really going to require more than half the mall closed because they will be changing the whole mall map. think of it like turning a box to a circle. the department store will move to a different spot, SSI shops will come in, and it may house the very first H&M store in the Philippines. so it's really going to be bongga.

SM Southmall really deserves a total makeover!

BTW, I heard from a friend who formerly works in SM Southmall that there are plans to build a Condominium within the SM Southmall complex and a "Sky Garden". I dont know, well it's a good idea...

SM PRIME TO OPEN SM CITY TARLAC (http://smprime.com/smprime/index.php?p=670&type=2&sec=54&aid=6052)

Thursday, April 29, 2010
SM Investor Relations

(29 April 2010. Pasay City, Philippines.) SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime), the Philippines' dominant mall developer and operator, is set to open SM City Tarlac on Friday, 30 April 2010. It is the company’s 37th shopping mall in the country and the very first in the province of Tarlac. The four-level mall has a gross floor area (GFA) of 103,340 square meters (sqm) and occupies 34,385 sqm of land.

SM City Tarlac has a leasable area of 39,219 sqm, 70% of which has already been leased out to tenants. The mall’s anchor tenants are SM Supermarket, SM Department Store, Ace Hardware, SM Appliance, and personal care products distributor Watsons.

Other tenants include quick service restaurants Jollibee, Savory Chicken, KFC, Goldilocks, and Starbucks; fashion and apparel retailers Bench, Penshoppe, and Guess; and footwear distributors Crocs, Sanuk, and All Flip Flops; among others. SM City Tarlac also features a 1,194-sqm food court, four cinemas, a Cyberzone, and parking for over 900 vehicles SM Prime president Hans T. Sy said, “We warmly welcome all our valued customers to our newest shopping mall, SM City Tarlac. Our new mall eagerly anticipates the arrival of its customers coming in from the progressive city of Tarlac and other nearby areas and provinces in Central and Northern Luzon. We are ready to provide them a first-rate, integrated shopping, dining, and entertainment experience, for which SM Prime is known.”

Tarlac City is a fast emerging city in the province of Tarlac, a melting pot of sorts in Central Luzon because of its diverse cultural groups, mostly coming from Ilocos, Pampanga, and Pangasinan provinces, among others. It is also a major public transportation hub, serving thousands of commuters within Central and Northern Luzon. SM City Tarlac is the first SM mall to be opened this year. It brings to 37 the total number of SM Prime malls all over the country, with a combined GFA of 4.6 million sqm. For the rest of 2010, SM Prime is scheduled to open SM City Novaliches in Quezon City and SM City Calamba and SM Supercenter San Pablo, both of which are in the province of Laguna. The company is also set to open its fourth SM mall in mainland China, which will be located in the city of Suzhou. By year end, the company is expected to have 40 malls in the Philippines, with an estimated total GFA of 4.7 million sqm.

Winema - The first interactive cinema in the Philippines
Posted by irisaeirin - Filed under Launch, Moviehttp://www.pinayads.com/category/movie/)] - 0 (http://www.pinayads.com/2010/04/winema-the-first-interactive-cinema-in-the-philippines/#respond) Comments

Weeeeeee! The first interactive cinema in the Philippines is finally ready by April 30 at SM Megamall Cinema 1!
What is Winema?
A first and only in the Philippines, Winema at SM Cinema is a groundbreaking innovation which turns the whole movie audience into human joysticks through interactive cinema gaming. The project launched with Boink Out (an Arkanoid game) and Power Catcher (catching falling products) just in time for the blockbuster movies this summer.
How do you play Winema?
The elements of the game are fairly easy. With a motion sensitive camera, movie watchers will maneuver the character on screen left and right by waving their arms in the air according to the direction they want it to follow.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs429.snc3/24763_384651621858_162557326858_3885142_3907203_n.jpg
How long will Winema run?
Winema will run for 3 minutes so the movie audience need to accumulate as much points under the given time.
What’s in it for the audience?
Aside from playing Winema for free, the movie audience that gets to beat the high score will receive a prize for each audience member. So as they say, focus!
Why “Winema”?
SM Cinema dreams of creating a bond for families and friends who watch movies in its theatres. Winema is consistent with SM Cinema’s brand personality—young, fun, and interactive. Ergo, aside from the wordplay, Winema (“We Interact with the Cinema”) aims to unite the movie audience with one unique concept.
How would the game know who to follow?
Winema games are able to detect multiple physical movements from the movie crowd through its Tolerance Factor. It will follow the summation of the group’s physical movements. For example, 80% of the people directed to the right, then the game character will as well. With the strict programming of this aspect of the game and the large number of participants, the possibility of the program getting “confused” will be insignificant.
Winema Games
To ensure the novelty of this breakthrough for loyal SM Cinema patrons, new games will be introduced regularly.
For the first two months of Winema, these are the games to be launched:
1. Boink Out (Arkanoid Game)- Use the ball to break the bricks!
2. Power Catcher – Don’t litter in the cinema! Catch the popcorn and other different items.
Your Brand can OWN IT
With this, we are happy to inform you that brands like yours have the opportunity to “own it” for a period of one (1) year or more wherein characters of the game can be duly customized based on your requirement.
Such cinema interactive game is currently being done in the US, and brands who have chosen to “own it” have experienced a significant increase of brand preference by their customers. This is primarily due to the high impact awareness that it creates via viral marketing and media exposure.
We will be more than willing to sit down with you to discuss further this once in a lifetime opportunity to be the FIRST to OWN IT!
Where Winema will be available?
Winema launched at SM Digital Theaters in SM Megamall Cinema 1. In a few months, it will be available in other branches.

With mall in mind, Sy buys Lucio Tan property
Tuesday, May 4, 2010
Philippine Daily Inquirer By Doris Dumlao

TYCOON HENRY SY’S SM PRIME Holdings Inc. has bought a three-hectare property in Lucio Tan group’s North Belton Communities, a mixed-use township development in Quezon City where it will build a new shopping mall.

Lucio-Tan led Eton Properties Philippines Inc. and Philippine National Bank recently signed a memorandum of agreement with SM Prime involving the sale of a portion of the group’s 13.8-hectare North Belton project. SM Prime will construct a commercial/shopping complex within two years from execution of the agreement, Eton said Friday in a statement.

“Our partnership with SM in North Belton Communities is all part of the master plan to give the best value to our homebuyers. The presence of a mall within the project brings in convenience and adds value to the community and its neighborhood,” Eton president Danilo Ignacio said.

Eton is the developer of North Belton Communities through a joint venture agreement with PNB as the landowner. It is Eton’s first project to cater to the middle income segment, marketed under the Belton Communities brand. It is home to three exclusive residential enclaves: The Manors, West Wing Residences and West Wing Villas that will eventually be home to 1,600 families.

The MOA signing marks the second tie-up between Eton and the SM Group. The first partnership was sealed in 2009, when Eton and SM’s Super Shopping Market Inc. signed an agreement covering Eton’s two-level commercial center, Centris Station, in Quezon City, where SM Hypermarket is the anchor tenant.

Eton had also signed a memorandum of understanding with Ayala subsidiary Amaia Land Corp., to develop a four-hectare property in Calamba, Laguna, owned by affiliate companies of the Lucio Tan group with Eton as the development manager, representing the landowners.

Eton and PNB are part of the Lucio Tan Group, one of the biggest conglomerates in the Philippines with interests in airline operations, banking, tobacco and real estate. With a report from Nephele Fabiola Kirong

KULTURA will have its own stand-alone store opening soon at SM Fairview. This addition makes it the 2nd SM Mall with the most number of SM affiliates, brands and anchors present in one complex.

SM North's Main Building/City Center is currently, slowly being renovated/facelifted pretty much under the radar, kickstarted by the department store a few years ago, 3rd floor tenants has moved to carpark to become the Interior Zone, 3rd level now been closed for quite some time. Hopefully, the 2nd, UGF and LGF will follow the renovation. :)

The story behind Wine Story

by Sherwin Lao
http://www.marketmanila.com/images/abacchus2.JPG
Wine Story, the name of the ultra premium wine shop in Shangri-La Plaza Mall, Mandaluyong, is still creating much buzz from wine lovers and curious non-wine drinkers alike over a month since its formal opening. The sheer presence of many Imperial (six liter) bottles of Bordeaux Grand Cru Classe wines, costing hundreds of thousands of pesos each - the most I have seen in one single location, is the first marveling sight for walk-ins upon entering this posh shop. Aside from the mind boggling collection of some of the finest, as well as recent vintages of your top Bordeaux, Rhone, Bourgogne, Champagne, Ribera del Duero and Californian Cult wines, Wine Story also features the latest version of the Enomatic wine vending machine from Italy. This is a newer version of the same Enomatic machine that helped made CAV in the Fort, the watering hole of wine lovers since its inception in early 2008.

New kids on the block

Business partners and childhood friends Romy Sia and Christian Tan are the people behind the very successful Healthy Options retail chain. They are also the same guys now turning heads in the local wine industry with their latest baby, Wine Story. Given the retail expertise of the partners, Wine Story was conceived as more of a retail shop, then a wine bar. The Enomatic machine, as Romy explained is more for wine buyers to try the 32 different by-the-glass selection, and decide which one to buy and collect. Romy Sia is admittedly the more seasoned wine drinker among the two, having lived and studied in England in the late 80s. But even then, according to Romy, wine is just a beverage. “I used to drink Blue Nun, and other sweeter wines, but these wines did not register as more than just a beverage then’’ said Romy. So, what propelled the interest in opening a luxury wine store?

Wine book as main influence

If there is a turning point in Romy’s wine interest, it happened less than two years ago. Romy, being a wide reader, picked up the book The Billionaire’s Vinegar—The Mystery of the World’s Most Expensive Bottle of Wine by Benjamin Wallace. After two days of reading, Romy’s perception of wine had changed forever. “I got hooked!’’ he said. From that point on, Romy has not only been drinking more wines, but these wines are now viewed totally different from before. It is no longer `just’ a beverage. There is also a developing insatiable thirst to learn more. So more wine books were bought, and customary visits to wine stores are suddenly already part of Romy’s itinerary when traveling overseas. While most people caught the wine bug via the sensory appreciation side (including myself), Romy got immersed through the “mystique’’ and the intellectual notion of wine. But no sooner than later, the sensory side should fast catch up, especially given the wealth of wines available at Wine Story that are purely hedonistic. Romy’s previous most memorable wine was the Chateau Pichon Lalande 2000—this classified second growth from Pauillac is definitely amongst the very best, not shabby at all and certainly hard to top!

The concept and vision

While the lavish wine selection in Wine Story is not meant for novices, the concept is still to reach out to affluent new drinkers. After all, Romy and Christian had build their Healthy Options empire on very niche target marketing, catering to the AB crowd. Now, the challenge is to bring wine drinking to many evasive and uninitiated class AB drinkers. This may just be the right venue to train and educate future wine enthusiasts. Using himself as an example, Romy believed that many wine drinkers are abound, but needed a trigger of sorts to get them to be more serious on wines. “Our vision is for more quality wine stores like ours to open all over Metro Manila and other key cities’’ proudly stated Romy . “We want to be the catalyst of fine wine enjoyment.’’ Romy plans to have regular wine appreciation classes and wine tasting sessions at Wine Story in the coming months to do its part on wine education.

The wine story advantage

Right now, Wine Story is in a class of its own, and may be not just in the country, but the entire Asian region. Romy noted, and I concurred from my travels myself, that there is no similar luxury wine shop like Wine Story even in neighboring richer cities like Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Shanghai. The 32 strong by-the-glass selection in Enomatic machine, the number of Imperial bottles, the complete Bordeaux First Growth wines, including some excellent verticals, the impeccable storage conditions (kept at around 17° C), the wine books and accessories, including Riedel crystal glasses are just unequalled by far locally. While prices may arguably be higher (from researched internet prices), I however believe it is well justified. Romy air-freight his wines, and buy them only from the most trusted merchants, auction houses and international sources. The integrity of the wine stocks is simply indisputable. And if you have to shell out over a $1,000 on a bottle of wine, wouldn’t this `best condition’ assurance be the peace of mind needed in just a big investment? Also, I asked Romy why they chose Shangri-La Mall in Mandaluyong, and not a location in the more premium Fort, Global City or Makati. And Romy was very right to point out that there is no good wine bar, nor good wine shop in this side of the Pasig River (after Guadalupe bridge). Aside from this, there is a huge “Chinese-Filipino’’ population in the Mandaluyong, San Juan and Pasig areas that are very accessible to Wine Story. Finally, and not the last consideration, Romy and Christian have always had great relationship with the Shangri-La Mall. They not only have a very solid Healthy Options branch there, but also Bow & Wow, their natural pet food store.

Congratulations to Romy Sia and Christian Tan for such a bold endeavor. Oenophiles all over the metropolis are very grateful, and I am positive that many recluse wine drinkers will be coming out in the open soon. But do note that good wines are never cheap. Wine Story is located at the ground floor of Shangri-La Mall, open daily 11a.m. till 10 p.m.
