Hi Ashok,

Does your now-missing Expo photo reveal the Expo Express? If so, is there any chance of --what?-- relaunching it here, coz there are too few! existing shots of that abolished metro I used to get to ride?

Thanking you in advance.

Look out, world - it's our new brand

The Gazette

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

What image says "Greater Montreal" to you?

If you guessed a stylized M in the colours of a roll of LifeSavers, give yourself a treat.

After a year-long search, the Montreal region has come up with a distinctive logo and motto to promote itself internationally, starting in 2010.

This first "branding" for the region has cost the municipalities within it $487,000. Another $200,000 is budgeted to develop a plan next year to promote the distinctive label, while the budget for promotional activities is to be set at a later date.

The Montreal Metropolitan Community, which represents the region's 82 municipalities, this month approved the M, stitched together from patches of hot pink, tangerine, rhubarb, turquoise and green apple.

The English motto that appears under the M reads: "Greater Montréal: Room to make it real."

In French, it says: "Le Grand Montréal: L'espace pour se réaliser."

"It refers to the fact the Greater Montreal region offers a physical space ... for a pleasant quality of life, where you can earn a living and raise a family, but also have access to nature, waterways and the vast green spaces you find on Montreal Island and in the other municipalities of the region," said Laurent Pepin, a partner and senior vice-president at National Public Relations in Montreal.

"But it's also a reference to psychological space and creative space, and the possibility of realizing your projects, your ambitions and your career."

Pepin's firm worked with Montreal-based Co Création et Gestion de Marque Inc. to come up with the logo and motto, which are part of a broader strategy to promote the region abroad, Pepin said.

Amsterdam, New York, Hong Kong and Lyon, France, among others, have developed brands for their city-regions as well.

"I didn't vote against it," Laval Mayor Gilles Vaillancourt said of the Oct. 2 meeting where the logo was adopted, adding he sees "nothing much" in the new image.

"What made me decide to go with it is the fact it's a way to identify the region," he said.

"The MMC has to show where it belongs and how many cities are involved."

But don't count on Laval's dropping its logo - a 3-D stylized L - or its motto: "Laval: ville de l'avenir (city of the future)" in favour of the MMC's new image.

"Definitely not," Vaillancourt said. "We have our own personality."

"The intent is ... it would be used in conjunction with the logo of each city in the MMC," said Montreal executive committee member Alan DeSousa, who is responsible for economic development.

"Each city retains its own identity but at the same time, when speaking abroad, we're speaking with one voice."

The MMC has issued a call for tenders to find a firm to come up with a plan by May 2009 to promote the brand image in 2010.

In the meantime, the MMC will ask municipalities and agencies that already promote Montreal abroad, like industrial parks, economic development bureaus and Tourism Montreal, whether they are willing to adopt the brand image as their own.

Vaillancourt said he has informed his city's economic development agency, Laval Technopole, of the new logo.

"They'll decide if they want to use it or not," he said.

The agency has its own logo, which resembles a globe.

"When you're outside the country, we always use Montreal as a geographical reference," Vaillancourt said.

The MMC, run by a council of mayors over which Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay presides, has a total budget of $103 million. It is funded by Montreal, Laval, Longueuil and municipalities on the North and South Shores.

The MMC budgeted $400,000 for the logo design after spending $87,000 on a study by the consulting firm Zins Beauchesne et associés.

The study advised the regional body to develop an international promotional strategy and brand image.

The firm said the MMC needs to project a coherent brand image abroad rather than have competing messages from the city of Montreal and other municipalities, as well as Tourism Montreal and other agencies operating in the region.

The low-profile MMC was set up by the Quebec government in 2001 to co-ordinate planning on economic development and promotion, land use, waste management and transit.

Members of the public are scarcely seen at its council meetings.

The Oct. 2 meeting lasted 35 minutes; no questions were asked during the public question period.

It's your city and your logo - tell us what you think about it

So far, the Montreal Metropolitan Community has spent $487,000 on this logo, with another $200,000 budgeted to come up with a plan to promote it. What do you think of the logo, and the tax money being spent on it?

Stylized M will work just fine, director insists

The Gazette

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

M? may not be the next Nike swoosh, but the head of the organization that commissioned the new logo for the Montreal region says it's a clever strategy that should help draw more foreign investment to the region.

"For the first time we can speak with one voice when do international promotion for the region," Massimo Iezzoni, director of the Montreal Metropolitan Community, said yesterday after The Gazette revealed the new distinctive logo and motto that will be used to promote the region internationally starting in 2010.

The mayors of the 82 municipalities that make up the MMC voted unanimously to approve the image this month.

The exercise has cost the municipalities $487,000 so far, including an initial study on whether to develop a regional "brand" and focus groups and research to design it.

Another $200,000 is budgeted to develop a plan next year to promote the image, while the budget for promotion activities will be set at a later date.

"It's a very good investment if we want to attract more human capital and investment in the region," Iezzoni said.

The stylized M is made of five patches of hot pink, tangerine, rhubarb, turquoise and green apple to represent the five regions of greater Montreal, Iezzoni said: Montreal Island, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.

The motto under the M reads in English: "Greater Montréal: Room to make it real."

In French, it's: "Le Grand Montréal: L'espace pour se réaliser."

Responding to criticism that the English version is an awkward translation, Iezzoni said he would raise it with his staff.

"Our English team that worked on it thinks it's perfectly right," he said.

The plan now is to get cities as well as tourism and business development agencies to use the brand together with their own logo when promoting Montreal abroad, Iezzoni said.

New city logo fails to impress citizens

Suggestion: Sell it to Winnipeg, Edmonton

The Gazette

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

The Montreal Metropolitan Community has come up with a new logo to "brand" the region. It's a stylized, multi-coloured M with the slogan: Greater Montréal: Room to make it real.

So far, the council has spent $487,000 on the logo, with another $200,000 budgeted to come up with a plan to promote it.

At montrealgazette.com/soundoff, we asked you what do you thought of the logo, and the tax money being spent on it. The response has been lively. Here are some of the most recent posts:

From Diane Lee: "I sure hope there is 'room to make a real logo,' because this one is silly. How on Earth are we supposed to be taken seriously with such a childish drawing? We are a city of culture - this logo does not represent that. The slogan can use some work, too, to say the least.

From Lise: "Do we want to be known as the city of clowns?"

From Catherine McHarg: "A 5-year-old child could have come up with something better. It's ugly, ugly, ugly, to say the least. Someone needs their head examined."

From Wayne Again: "An idea from a co-worker.: Let's try to cut the cost by sending an upside-down version to Winnipeg and send a 45-degree rotated version to Edmonton! There you go. We just cut the cost by two-thirds."

From Gman: "Total waste of money and a garbage logo that's worth $100 and I'm being generous. I have worked in the field for 15+ years and I can tell you from experience that this logo is a complete joke just like the people that approved it. Kickbacks? Fraud is more like it!"

From Colin: "I like the logo. I think some of the subtleties of graphic design are lost on non-designer types. It's a very friendly logo, youthful, conveying potential and it's unpretentious, authentic, true to itself. Overall very positive."

From Susan W.: "Where were the good taste police? The artwork is ridiculous for a city of stature and the written logo is meaningless - certainly in English and not much better in French. Pull the contract, demand a refund, fire those responsible and get some sense!!"

From Michelle: "For the great brains that spent our hard-earned money on a stupidity that my 2-year-old godchild could have done a better job producing, I have a new slogan for you: 'Get REAL.' What an atrocious waste of money when when times are hard for everyone and we are all tightening our belts! Who voted for these losers?"

From JR: "Obviously the ad agency was inspired by the jellybean colour scheme of the Palais des congrès when they created this logo. My comments for both are the same: What were they on when they came up with this idea? All that's missing is some cute daisies to get the real flower power thing happening. It's so groovy I could puke, but thanks for givin' me the space to make it 'real', man."

From Olé: "Looks more like: Come to Mexico ...Where Our Roads Are Better Than Montreal's."

From Neville Brody: "I see a stripper in tacky striped stockings. So maybe this symbol DOES kinda represent Montreal! 'Montreal. Room to make it. Real.' "

From Richard A: "I thought my neighbour's cat puked on my paper again this morning."

From Jerry: "Oh my God! Another waste of taxpayers' money. The sorry state of roads and bridges really represent this city and region. The M should have cracks and pieces falling from it!"

From A for Angry: "M for Mindless."

Really?? I guess i've been inside PVM so often that I don't notice it anymore. The most imprssive office tower lobby to me has to be the lobby in the old Royal Bank Tower at 360 St-Jacques. They sure don't build them like they used to!

Toronto's FCP is just a tall white box but represents nothing.
PVM is an icon in Canada. Skycrapers are a dime a dozen but PVM is a centrepiece.
It's like SanFran TransAmerica tower. Its recognizable.
Tallest? no, Widest? no, Amazing view? no, Most modern? no, but it represents the city in a way few office towers do in the world.

Tallest? no, Agreed!

Widest? no, It's pretty damn wide for a building. You have to remember that PVM has floor plates of 38,000 sq. feet(compared to FCP with floor plates of about 31,000 square feet)

Amazing view? no, It has unobstructed views all around. I've had the chance to go out at Club 737 (on the roof) and the views are amazing!

Most modern? no, Once again, you are right!

but it represents the city in a way few office towers do in the world. Also true! Especially with the spot light on top lighting up the night since 1964. It's an Icon.
