Galata Tower in Istanbul was built by Italians on a strategic point in 1348 and during the Ottoman period it was used as a prison.

Galata Tower is a fantastic building, and it's difficult to believe that it's been around for hundreds of years. The views are incredible!
Also, the first pic really shows how much of a hilly terrain Istanbul is built upon! The building on the far right (Ritz - Carlton) is in fact 154m tall, but only the top part can be seen!

The Galata Tower built in 1349 have been constructed for the defence of the city, the tower was used as a kind of prison for some time and later as a fire-wachting tower during the Ottoman period. in the 17th century Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi launched himself off the top of the tower wearing wings which he had made for himself, and successfully completed the fligt across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar.
