View Full Version : Singapore Expo expansion
babystan03 December 20th, 2004, 01:16 PM Singapore Expo, Singapore
Start Date: 1996 | Completion Date: 2005
The Singapore Government developed the world-class Singapore Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre with the aim of placing Singapore in the forefront of the exhibition industry in the South East Asia region.
The complex, which is in stage two of development, has 100,000m2 of internal exhibition space in six halls. Each hall is 100 metres x 100 metres (without columns) and there are currently four additional halls under construction and due for completion in 2005.
Arup in Brisbane is undertaking the preliminary structural and civil design and also a detailed traffic study. Arup in Singapore will complete the structural and civil engineering design and oversee the construction of the new halls.
Each exhibition space can be naturally ventilated and use natural daylight during set up and take down of exhibitions
After completion of the new halls, the Singapore Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre will boast a total covered exhibition floor area of 100,000 m² - the size of 15 football fields - making it one of the largest exhibition centres in South East Asia.
The roof structure of the Singapore Expo building comprises conventional bowstring trusses, expanded into a diagonal cross section, out of the truss plane, to reduce the span of the secondary steel and introduce some form into the space below. Between each truss is a raised roof section allowing natural light and ventilation to reduce energy consumption between exhibitions.

The actual space for the whole area will be roughly 100000 sq meters + 35000 sq meters(existing carpark space 25000 sq meters, I guess they are adding another 10000 sq meters or so of outdoor exhibition space) = 135000 sq meters

Changi Biz Park: JTC gets URA nod
Revised masterplan factors in new nearby developments
By ARTHUR SIM
JTC Corp has received in-principle approval from the Urban Redevelopment Authority for the revised masterplan of the 67-hectare Changi Business Park (CBP), which now takes into account new developments in the vicinity including the proposed University of New South Wales and the recently completed ITE College East.
In line with this, JTC, which has traditionally only been involved with industrial facilities, will be launching a Request-for-Proposal (RFP) for private developers to build, own and manage a high-rise, multi-tenanted development in CBP.
The site, Plot 53, spans 7,968 sq m, with a plot ratio of 2.5. The expected gross floor area is 19,920 sq m. The site is part of the revised masterplan, which now also includes a 'white site component'.
Details are expected by the end of this year.
However, JTC said that 'some white component', possibly commercial or even recreational, may be included in the RFP.
Of the new CBP, JTC chief executive Chong Lit Cheong said: 'We hope to draw more talents and businesses to congregate here to work, live and learn. We are therefore looking for creative proposals from developers who can leverage on these unique selling points.'
To be sure, living in a business park will give CBP a completely new atmosphere. A residential component has not been explicitly expressed by JTC, but sources say a serviced residence is being evaluated.
Other plans for CBP show that JTC is interested in creating more 'synergy' with the new educational institutions as well as the existing Singapore Expo.
Chandran Nair, deputy general manager of Singex Venues, which runs Singapore Expo, says that four new exhibition halls, which will add an additional 40,000 sq m of exhibition and convention centre space to the market, will be ready by end-2005.
Mr Nair could not comment on other developments for the area but said: 'On my wish list is a hotel'.
And he may get his wish.
The revised masterplan for CBP envisions a new 'activity hub' around Singapore Expo that may include a hotel, entertainment centre, retail shops and F&B outlets. And the area has potential.
JTC says development for this hub is expected within the next five years.
A second activity hub, conceived as a 'green landscaped spine' and dotted with F&B outlets, will link the proposed University of New South Wales with the CBP. Development is expected to begin after 2010.
It seems the new university will be an integral part of the CBP. Sources say R&D companies have already expressed interest in developing facilities at CBP that will share facilities and resources with the university in a way that will be beneficial to both.

4 new halls almost double Expo capacity
By Marcel Lee Pereira
ORGANISERS of large-scale events have four more reasons to hold their shows in Singapore.
That's the number of new halls added to Singapore Expo, providing exhibitors with an extra 40,000 sq m for their events. With 100,000 sq m available, it is now one of the largest exhibition venues in the region.
http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/mnt/media/image/launched/2005-09-16/h9.jpg
The additions, which cost $32 million, will allow concurrent and overlapping events to be held, especially during the peak period from March to June.
The new halls also offer flexibility to event organisers. Hall 10 - brand-named The Max Pavilion - houses a 7,000-seat auditorium with five meeting rooms and four conference rooms, each with a capacity of 260 people. This can be converted into open exhibition space.
'If necessary, we can still have 100,000 sq m of exhibition space. But when we don't require that amount of space, it is still an auditorium with state-of-the-art equipment,' said Mr Steven Seet, group general manager of Singex, which manages the Expo centre.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said the new halls were built in 11 months to meet the 'immediate' need for space in the burgeoning meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (Mice) industry, to enable Singapore to capitalise on its reputation as a preferred venue for Mice events.
Last year, the Mice industry raked in nearly $2.9 billion in tourism receipts and the STB expects the sector to grow by an average of 15 per cent annually, and account for 35 per cent of tourism receipts by 2015.
STB acting assistant chief executive for business travel and Mice, Mr Aloysius Arlando, said more space will attract large events as well as allow homegrown shows like CommunicAsia to grow and 'not be constrained by a lack of space'.
In 2001, the annual communications and information technology exhibition proved too large for the Expo complex. Air-conditioned tents had to be set up in the carpark to cope with the overflow.
Singapore Expo hosts about 400 events a year. Mr Arlando believes the extra space is enough to meet the venue's immediate needs, but the STB will continue to monitor the situation.
The quick expansion is in time for this year's Asian International Exhibition of Textile Machinery, on from Oct 17 to 21. It will occupy seven halls.
The event's organiser, Ms Sylvia Phua, said the quality of Singapore Expo's infrastructure can be improved, starting with the introduction of a wireless communications network. 'Instead of thinking about the concrete slabs, the roof and big cubicles, they need to look at communication facilities to support simple things like a wireless network,' she said.
Singapore Expo said it is considering developing a wireless network to connect all exhibitors.
Plenty of room

More loos, car lots needed at Expo
I AM concerned that the Singapore Expo has added another four halls, almost doubling its capacity (ST, Sept 16).
My concern is that even with its former capacity, the infrastructure did not seem to be adequate to support visitors, especially in the areas of parking and women's toilets, during major exhibitions or concerts.
Earlier this year, I drove my wife and daughter to a Hi-5 concert. It was the beginning of the school holidays and there was also an exhibition.
We had planned to be there an hour earlier so that we could check out the souvenirs (and eat popcorn) before the concert.
However, when we got near the Singapore Expo, we found the roads so packed that I decided to let my wife and daughter alight at a bus stop so that they could walk to Hall 6 for the concert.
They were an hour early and thought it would be a good idea to visit the restroom. However, the toilet queues were so long that they had to go to Tanah Merah MRT station and use the toilet there.
Will more toilets - and parking space - be provided with the addition of the four halls? If not, I shudder to think of the crush when there are two large events (think Comex, Natas fair, Barney concert, etc) or more happening at the same time, which is a definite possibility.

Singapore Expo Halls 7-10 Completed And Open For Business (15 Sep 2005)
Singapore, 15 September 2005 - Event organizers in the MICE (Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions and Exhibitions) industry in Singapore will now have access to more MICE facilities, with the completion of the interim expansion of the Singapore Expo, the largest facility for MICE events in Singapore and one of the largest exhibition centres in Southeast Asia.
With the expansion, Singapore Expo now has four additional halls of 10,000 square metres each. Located near the Expo MRT station at the Singapore Expo grounds, the additional halls bring the total event space offered by the venue to 100,000 square metres, up from the previous 60,000 square metres.
Mr Aloysius Arlando, Acting Assistant Chief Executive (Business Travel & MICE Group) of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), said: “The Asian region is now witnessing buoyant economic growth, driven by the expanding economies of China and India and emerging opportunities within ASEAN. This has resulted in an increase in business travel across the region, and the need for effective business platforms to stimulate business growth. We are also seeing an attendant growth in business and MICE events, including corporate meetings, tradeshows and conferences. By 2015, STB projects that the Asia Pacific region will attract over 100 million business travellers and MICE visitors.”
“This interim expansion of the Singapore Expo is part of a wider effort to ensure that Singapore has the necessary capabilities and MICE infrastructure to meet the needs of this expanding business travel and MICE market. For one thing, the additional halls serve the immediate need for space by some of Singapore’s expanding tradeshows. Another key area is the need for versatile MICE facilities which are able to meet the increasingly multi-purpose needs of business event organizers. The additional halls will help to meet these needs. They will also enable Singapore to build on its reputation as a preferred venue for MICE events in Asia.”
Currently, the business travel and MICE industry contributes about 25% to Singapore’s total visitor arrivals, and 30% to its total tourism receipts. STB estimates that the industry will grow at an average rate of 15% annually over the next 10 years, and that, by 2015, business and MICE events will be contributing to 35% of Singapore’s total tourism receipts.
Construction works on the four halls began in October 2004. They were completed in August this year, and the management of the halls has been undertaken by Singex Venues Pte Ltd, the appointed management company for Singapore Expo.
Singex Venues is optimistic about the line-up of upcoming events and the facility’s increased flexibility with the additional halls; with this increased flexibility, Singapore Expo will be able to manage more than one mega-scale event at any given period. Singex Venues will also be able to offer more organizers event space during peak periods, which will result in a wider variety of events being held at Singapore Expo. With the trend leaning towards more business events combining different business platforms such as conferences and product launches together with the traditional tradeshow format, the additional halls offer organisers more space for modular meeting rooms as well as entertainment and hospitality space.
Mr Steven Seet, Group General Manager of the Singex group of companies, said: “With the current trend of business events requiring the flexible use of event space for simultaneous conferences, exhibitions, break-out sessions etc, Singapore Expo’s increase in capacity will now be able to meet that need. We hope to see more mega events, like the International Furniture Fair Singapore, optimizing Singapore Expo’s ground-level advantage and the flexibility of its event space to organise successful events.”
The first business events to make use of the additional halls include the mega textile machinery tradeshow ITMA ASIA 2005 (17-21 October), with an expected 800 exhibitors and 30,000 trade visitors, and a 6,000-strong corporate convention, also in October. In addition to these large-scale events, several home-grown exhibitions have also been growing in size and stature, requiring more space with each edition. For example, CommunicAsia and BroadcastAsia attracted more than 60,000 visitors and more than 2,000 exhibiting companies from 54 countries, covering 62,000 square metres of exhibition space at the Singapore Expo in their last showing. The additional Halls 7-10 now provide such shows with the necessary business event space required, as well as the flexibility to expand further.
Mr Stephen Tan, Chief Executive of Singapore Exhibition Services Pte Ltd which organises CommunicAsia and BroadcastAsia, said: “Both the shows surpassed our expectations. Looking ahead, CommunicAsia and BroadcastAsia are set to grow even more next year as we project the exhibitions to occupy no less than 70,000 square metres of exhibition space when BroadcastAsia2006 moves into Halls 7 and 8 in line with Singapore Expo’s new expansion.”

Quotes from industry partners:
"We welcome the expansion of the Singapore Expo halls. This gives us the option and flexibility in the venue selection process."
- Mr Ed Ng, President, Singapore, Reed Exhibitions Pte Ltd
"One of the company's primary objectives is to expand the International Furniture Fair Singapore from its present size of 55,000 square metres to 100,000 square metres by 2009. This will make the show the largest annual international trade show in Singapore and consolidate the show's leadership position as the best furniture show in Asia. The additional halls at Singapore Expo will provide the space for us to grow the show.”

250 more carpark lots outside new Expo halls
I REFER to Mr Ng Wei Kwan's letter, 'More loos, car lots needed at Expo' (ST, Sept 23).
We understand that Mr Ng's visit to Singapore Expo was made during a peak period when there was a surge in demand for most public facilities. We regret the inconvenience caused to him and his family and would like to thank him for his valuable feedback.
Singapore Expo has a total of 2,250 carpark lots which represents one of the largest number of dedicated lots for a single facility in Singapore. There are now an additional 250 lots outside the new halls.
During peak periods or big events, the carparks do get packed. We are constantly upgrading the carpark-management systems to increase the efficiency and flow of traffic at all the entry and exit points.
We recommend that members of the public use public transport or consider parking in alternative carparks in the vicinity of Singapore Expo during such peak periods.
Event organisers can also identify additional parking facilities in the vicinity and organise shuttle services to the centre. This is the usual practice at all international exhibition centres around the world during events at which large numbers of visitors are expected.
The centre has four sets of toilets per hall and several in the public areas in multiple locations. We are enhancing the directional signs at the centre in order to highlight more prominently where these facilities are located. This should help ease the overcrowding in some locations.
We are in active discussion with the Government, owner of Singapore Expo, to address the concerns raised.
We hope Mr Ng and his family will continue to visit Singapore Expo and enjoy the many exciting upcoming events.

Charging Bull October 17th, 2005, 03:55 PM ITMA Asia exhibition expected to generate $500m economic spin-offs
SINGAPORE : ITMA Asia, the region's leading textile machinery exhibition, opens in Singapore on Monday, with expectations that it will generate at least $500 million in economic spin-offs for the local economy.
It also expects its international visitors to contribute some $50 million in tourism receipts.
The five-day exhibition has attracted nearly 850 companies and 30,000 trade visitors from more than 50 countries, a significant increase from the inaugural show in 2001.
This year, it is held concurrently with the Singapore Fashion Week.
And for the first time, the organisers have combined two other shows - Apparel Asia and YAFA Asia 2005.
Speaking at the opening, Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang, noted the economic growth in China, India and Southeast Asia has resulted in a positive knock-on effect on Asia's textile industry.
Last year, its fabric output grew by over 50 per cent with Asia accounting for about half of the world's exports in textiles and clothing.
Exports from Singapore's textile and garment manufacturers alone amounted to S$4.3 billion.
Mr Lim said Singapore could play a pivotal role for textile-related businesses worldwide amid Asia's vibrant textile industry,
He said it was a good springboard for textile and apparel companies to venture out into the region.
And its physical proximity to key textile production bases in China, South Asia and Southeast Asia makes it a convenient and conducive meeting place for buyers and sellers in the industry.
To maintain its position as a choice destination for meetings and events, Mr Lim said Singapore would improve the infrastructure, enhance capabilities, and groom and attract MICE (Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions and Exhibitions) players and events.
It will also introduce a wider range of leisure and entertainment offerings to inject greater vibrancy and buzz into the city. - CNA/de
