SkylineTurbo January 16th, 2005, 03:17 PM , Business class is huge!
Nephasto January 17th, 2005, 06:42 PM Aren't the seats very narrow in the 777 with 3-4-3 configuration as Emirates operates them, for example?
Because the usual is 3-3-3 like British Airways (17.5" width) or Singapore (17.5/18" width) use it
So, the seats width in those 3-4-3 777's, must be significantly less, isn't it? Do you have numbers?
huaiwei January 18th, 2005, 08:27 AM Oh I tot the thread is about seat layouts, only to find that it starts off about seat dimensions? :D
Anyway Nephasto, Emirates does indeed pack her B777s, which is quite unusual considering it is gaining in reputation as a premier service airline!
Isan January 23rd, 2005, 03:56 PM Knowing more feel better prior be on board, is pretty luxury comfort ;) no matter how seat we are pre-setting
Isan January 23rd, 2005, 03:58 PM Hopes that the new A380 “superjumbo” will mean more comfortable flying for economy passengers received a blow this week when Emirates, the company that has placed the largest order for the aircraft, revealed that it would operate the planes with no increased legroom in economy class.
In a frank interview with The Sunday Times, Timothy C Clark, the president of Emirates, which has ordered 45 of the £130m aircraft, confirmed that the airline would operate its economy cabins with a seat pitch (the distance between a passenger seat and the one in front) of 32”-34” — identical to the pitch offered on its current aircraft. “However, our new seat design will make it more comfortable than anything around at the moment,” he said. Details of the new design have yet to be released.
Clark also confirmed that, on some routes, Emirates would pack as many as 649 passengers into the A380. Airbus has promoted the plane as carrying 555 people, though the manufacturer accepts that it would be possible to load 800 in an all-economy configuration — which has led some observers to raise fears that the A380 could become a “cattle truck of the skies”. “Personally, I’d have liked to put 720 seats in,” said Clark.
The airline will also operate two “lower-density” configurations, carrying 489 and 517 passengers. Clark would not confirm which configurations would fly on which routes, but said that the 649-seat aircraft was intended mainly for shorter-haul flights from the airline’s base at Dubai. However, he confirmed that “some eight-hour missions will fly with 649 passengers”. London is approximately 7 hours from Dubai.
“This is appalling news,” said John Smith MP, chair of the parliamentary All-Party Group on DVT (deep-vein thrombosis) Awareness. “It’s a terrible missed opportunity, and I’m very disappointed.
“We will continue to campaign to give airlines a legal duty of care to their passengers. The only reason Emirates can do this is that airlines, unlike every other public transport provider, do not have that duty of care.”
It is currently unclear whether other airlines will follow Emirates’s lead on economy seat pitch. Most of those buying the A380, including Air France, Lufthansa and Qantas, are keeping their cabin configuration secret. Virgin’s Richard Branson stole the show at this week’s unveiling in Toulouse with his promise to install a gym, a beauty parlour, double beds and a casino in his A380s — “So you’ll have at least two ways to get lucky on Virgin.”
While long on innuendo, Branson was short on detail, not confirming the seat pitch and only estimating the number of passengers — “about 500”.
Some industry analysts are sceptical that any airlines will make the A380 the “cruise ship of the skies”. Among them is David Learmount, of the aviation magazine Flight International.
“The economics of the A380 are no different from those of any other aircraft,” he says.
“The whole point of tourist class is that it’s for people who want to pay the lowest possible price — so you pack in the seats. The A380 might be a wonderful plane, but it can’t change the laws of the market.”

British Airways’ Club World flat bed is to be improved next month, in an aim to provide customers with an even more relaxing and comfortable flight.
The airline will enhance the flat bed with the latest cushioning technology, similar to that used in the latest premium household mattresses, to provide customers with more comfort and further ergonomic support.
The enhanced seat is part of a series of improvements to the airline’s Club World product designed to make the travel experience even better. Customers can also take advantage of larger pillows and higher quality thicker blankets to help them sleep better.
Passenger cabins will be refreshed with dark blue seat covers and complimented by photographs showing scenes of “Beautiful Britain” in tones of blue to create a restful and private cabin ambience.
As well as new improved menus created by the airline’s ‘culinary council’ of celebrity chefs, customers will also notice a change of presentation with crisp linen tablecloths and meals served on the finest quality Royal Doulton china.
The new improved Club World will be rolled out across the airline’s longhaul fleet of aircraft during the next six months.
Martin George, the airline’s commercial director, said, “Our multi-award winning Club World product has led the way in business class travel for several years but we look constantly at ways to make it even better.
“Last year we launched the Club World Sleeper Service on shorter longhaul flights to maximise sleep on board and this has proved extremely popular with our customers.
“We believe these improvements to our award winning Club World flat bed will give our customers an even more comfortable journey.”

Isan February 15th, 2005, 07:18 AM Virgin Atlantic completes Fitting Upper Class Suite to Gatwick Fleet
14 February 2005
Virgin Atlantic has announced that all of its Gatwick-based aircraft are now fitted with the airline's new Upper Class Suite just over a year after it was launched on the Heathrow fleet.
Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of Virgin Atlantic, commented, “We are very proud to be able to offer the Upper Class Suite to Gatwick passengers. We are sure that this award-winning Suite will be enjoyed by business and leisure passengers alike who are travelling on these routes.
“We are also pleased to announce that following the success and growing popularity of Premium Economy, Virgin Atlantic has expanded the number of seats in this cabin from 38 to 58 to meet demand from leisure passengers. Since we launched Premium Economy in 1992, it has been increasingly popular with passengers who wish to enjoy more space and flexibility along with a range of other services including a separate Check In, priority luggage and pre-flight champagne.”
Virgin Atlantic has completed fitting the Upper Class Suite onto its Heathrow based Boeing 747-400 fleet and its Airbus 340-600 fleet. The completion of the Gatwick fleet brings the total number of aircraft fitted with the Upper Class Suite to 21 out of the airline’s 30 with only nine Airbus A340-300s yet to be fitted.
Virgin Atlantic operates services from Gatwick to Barbados, St Lucia, Antigua, Grenada, Tobago, Orlando, Las Vegas and Port Harcourt and will be introducing services to Cuba and the Bahamas in July 2005. Virgin Atlantic plans to introduce self service Check In kiosks at Gatwick Airport in spring 2005.
The Gatwick 747-400’s are configured with 14 Upper Class seats, 58 Premium Economy seats and 379 seats in Economy.
Virgin Atlantic’s new Upper Class Suite, consists of a reclining leather seat for take off, a place to sit and eat a meal opposite your partner, one of the longest fully flat beds in the world with a proper mattress for sleeping on, a private onboard bar to drink at with friends and four limousines per return trip.

Isan February 16th, 2005, 08:18 AM British Airways Offers Beds on Flights from BWI to London
Feb 15, 2005 2:35 pm US/Eastern
Baltimore, MD (WJZ) People flying to London from Baltimore-Washington International Airport can now make the long trip a little more relaxing.
British Airways is now offering its Club World business class on flights from BWI.
The service includes seats that convert to a flat, six-foot-long bed.
British Airways is also starting a new class of travel for economy passengers at BWI called "World Traveler Plus."
It offers 38-inch seats in a separate cabin aboard three long-haul Boeing jets.
The new service was unveiled today at a special news conference at Camden Yards that included Ravens' quarterback Kyle Boller and Orioles' legend Brooks Robinson.http://images.viacomlocalnetworks.com/images_sizedimage_178114056/lg

Comfort: British Airways introduces bed-seats on the wide-body planes it flies between Baltimore and London.

It's not often that Baltimore Ravens quarterback Kyle Boller is flat on his back in front of spectators at a stadium - and smiling about it.
But at a news conference at Oriole Park at Camden Yards yesterday, Boller seemed pleased to help British Airways demonstrate its fully reclining business-class seats, a feature new to this market.
British Airways, which introduced the seats in 1996, phased them in to all of its 100 wide-body planes recently, including all of those used for the nightly flight from Baltimore-Washington International Airport to Heathrow Airport near London.
Business-class tickets are $1,998 round trip through March 20, which is 76 percent off the usual $8,250 ticket price. First-class tickets are more than $12,000, and coach fare is about $310, according to the airline's Web site.
Business travelers have long been a key to profitability for airlines because they typically pay for last-minute, higher fares that are for the more expensive cabins.
Business air travel, nationally and internationally, dipped significantly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and has been slow to recover. Airline analysts suspect that the big-spending ways might never return because passengers can use the Internet to easily shop for cheaper fares. Many also are limited by their companies on what they can spend.
At the Camden Club at Oriole Park yesterday, Boller joined former Orioles third baseman and Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson in stretching out in the 6-foot-long seats, which have more than twice the leg room found in coach.
At 6 feet, 3 inches tall, Boller nearly fit, with his size 14 shoes just flopping over the edge. At 6-foot-1, Robinson just about made it. A shorter bunch - airport and airline officials, business executives and a throng of journalists - who came to see the celebrities and the seats had an easier time stretching out.
"When I first started playing ball, we'd ride the bus," recalled Robinson, who played for the Orioles from 1955 to 1977. "When I got to the majors, we'd take the train, get in at 5 or 6 in the morning and try and go to sleep. When you're in your 20s you don't mind, but when you get a little older you want comfort."
As many carriers in the distressed airline industry cut back on food and luxuries in general, British Airways is banking on those willing to pay more for five or six hours of sleep without the sore neck.
Business travelers and high-end leisure customers make up a small fraction of the total passengers aboard a Boeing 767 or 777 wide-body airplane but bring in the most revenue.
The British Airways flights from BWI will have 24 or 40 of the new business-class seats, depending on the Boeing airplane, in addition to some first-class seat-beds that are a bit longer and more private. The airline also added another business section with seats several inches roomier than those in the economy class farther back in the plane. Economy class will continued to have the most seats, 122 or 141.
British Airways spent more than $376 million developing what the airline calls "club world" business class, which includes the new seats, enhanced entertainment, and Internet and phone access. Other amenities, such as showers, meals and drinks, are offered at airports.
The London airline is making money, unlike many of its major counterparts, but officials acknowledged yesterday the risk in spending so much on new seats that forced the elimination of a couple of rows in coach. The airline reported a profit of about $137 million in the fiscal third quarter, which ended Dec. 31, about 40 percent less than in the 2003 quarter.
"Time and time again we've asked business travelers what they want most on overseas flights and they say sleep,'" said Derrick Surratt, a regional director of sales for British Airways. "We've made quite an investment at a time when profit is being devoured by fuel costs. It's a tough scenario for the airline."
British Airways officials said the number of business travelers has been on the upswing and that a good night's rest will mean increased productivity for the businesses' work forces, possibly making up for some of what they spend on tickets for the new seats.
The Travel Industry Association reported this month that business travel is returning to 2000 levels after several years of decline. An association survey found, however, that the bulk of increasingly cost-conscious business travelers book their flights by phone or Web site, or use a service that searches for the best fare.
Gregory H. Barnhill, partner and board member of Brown Advisory Securities LLC, said his Baltimore financial-services firm sends people to London once or twice a month and that he thinks British Airways is on to something.
"In today's economy, all companies are concerned about budgets and expenses, but when you have to get off a plane and go directly to a meeting, being able to sleep on the plane means a lot," said Barnhill, who came to see the seats yesterday.
Officials at BWI said they, too, have something riding on the seats.
The airport's international terminal has struggled to live up to its billing since opening in 1997 and has had some setbacks in the past year, with Air Ghana and Aer Lingus canceling service. That left about a half dozen, mostly small airlines offering about 12 international flights a day.
Paul J. Wiedefeld, executive director of the Maryland Aviation Administration, which oversees the airport, said he has been in discussions with other airlines to begin or expand overseas service from the airport. But most of the growth at BWI has come from low-cost, domestic service, such as Southwest Airlines, which will open its terminal in the spring.
Wiedefeld said the new British Airways seats will allow the airport to offer something more to the higher-end traveler.
"These seats are just the type of difference British Airways can provide in the marketplace," he said.

Sign into earn Indiatimes points
KOLKATA: Travel is big business these days. And the club-class seats of domestic and foreign carriers are adding to the kitty like never before. Attractive schemes, loyalty points and an overriding desire among Indians to enter an upgraded comfort zone are helping airlines to rake in the moolah.
Moreover, the overall buoyancy in the economy is propelling this shift. “A greater number of Indians are now visible across five-star hotels globally than before.
Similarly, business class cabins stay full, with majority of the fliers being Indians. Also, business travel has increased by about 50% over the past five years,” says Rupen Vikamsey, business development head, Orbit Tours & Trade Fairs.
“More Indians are ready to spend money on their holidays. Luxury experience is more on demand. A luxury holiday begins with a premium ticket,” he adds. Meanwhile, British Airways country commercial manager, Alok Sawhney, attributes the increase in club-class travel to passengers’ awareness of their needs.
Also, as airlines like Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, KLM, North West, Delta, Gulf Air and Air India have increased their capacity, competition is forcing them to reduce fares across all classes, making business class easier on the pocket of the Great Indian middle class.

Isan July 5th, 2005, 09:45 AM BA to revamp Club World business class facilities
Ben Carter Marketing 22 Jun 2005
British Airways is to overhaul the Club World customer experience as part of its long-term aim to offer the world's best business class service.
Jayne O'Brien, head of BA's UK and Ireland marketing, said the airline was planning to invest heavily in Club World over the next 12 months to fund a number of changes both to the pre-flight and in-flight experience.
Changes being considered include a revamp of its Club World cabins, extending the in-flight menu and improving flexibility of snacks between meals.
This will build on the introduction of flat-beds, which are now available across its long-haul fleet.
BA began the first phase of a renewed focus on Club World with the launch of a TV campaign last weekend. The ads, which highlight the airline's use of softer beds, are being supported by a £6m spend as BA seeks to take on other long-haul carriers, including arch-rival Virgin Atlantic. The campaign is the first by BA to specifically target female business travellers.
The airline is also upping the ante on short-haul routes by establishing BA.com as an online destination.
All future advertising will highlight the address of the website, which it is promoting as a point of difference from other airlines, as it provides a broad range of services in one place. These include print-your-own boarding passes, which are being rolled out across European airports as well as several long-haul destinations.
'BA.com is a fundamental difference in the way we operate, giving customers the ability to do so much more,' said O'Brien.
Marketing spend for this year is being boosted by 5% to about £60m.

Isan February 3rd, 2006, 05:03 AM Emirates refurbishing Boeing 777-200s
2 February 2006
http://www.asiatraveltips.com/newspics/062/EmiratesFirstClassB777.jpg
Emirates is refurbishing its fleet of nine Boeing 777-200 aircraft. The Emirates Engineering Centre is retrofitting all the aircraft in-house with its existing state-of-the-art facilities.
Of the nine, seven aircraft have been refurbished and the other two will be ready by January 2007. The First Class cabins of the 777-200 now boast 12 lie-flat seats that convert to a bed at the touch of a button. A 2-2-2 seat configuration with wider aisles, electrically-operated privacy dividers and in-seat reading lights provide privacy. The centre seats are pitched up to 84 inches apart and provide easy access to the aisles. The seats have a soothing five-zone massage system while the one-touch seat controls are preset for bed, cradle and upright positions. Personal swivel tables with book functions are available at the touch of a button, as is laptop power.
The Business Class cabins have been converted to feature sleeperette seats in a 2-3-2 configuration with pitch of up to 60 inches, adjustable winged head-rests with four-way movement for optimum comfort, and in-seat laptop power which provide plenty of room to work or stretch out and relax.
Economy passengers can also enjoy more comfort with roomier cabins, 34-inch seat pitch, and adjustable footrests and headrests.
But that’s not all. The 777-200s also have been retrofitted with the ICE (information, communication and entertainment) system, available on passengers’ personal 19-inch digital display screens in First Class and 10.4-inch digital display screens in Business Class.
The system offers more than 500 audio, video and games channels available on demand and is available to customers travelling in every class. Besides the multitude of entertainment options available, ICE offers email and SMS facilities as well. Currently, nearly 35% of Emirates' fleet is fitted with Panasonic’s latest 3000i, dubbed ‘ICE’ at Emirates.
Emirates has also overhauled its 29 A330-200s for increased passenger comfort. The Business Class cabins have been refurbished to increase seat pitch from 48-49 inches to 58-63 inches, with the recline of the seats increased from 11 to 15 inches and height of the leg-rests raised from 6.1 inches to 9.5-12.5 inches depending on the configuration. The eight A340-300s have been similarly refurbished to increase recline and raise the height of the leg-rests.
