loyola January 6th, 2005, 02:15 AM One of the most amazing airports I have dealt with in China has been the one in Panzhihua, over the top of a hill. Not only for the airport itself but for the investment done in infrastructure around the whole mountain. There is only space for the runway, nothing else. They got a new Airbus to deal with it because of the landing precision required. Amazing. Did not get pictures, next time, but if you find one air view, it is impressive.

Qwertyuiop January 7th, 2005, 06:22 AM China has how many international airports?
I think the only international airports in China are Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou New Baiyun and Hong Kong Int'l. From these cities, all other Chinese cities can be reached with domestic flights. They have some kind of rule that only allows international flights to land in these four "coastal" cities, perhaps as a defense mechanism of some sort or just because China is just emerging in terms of amount of commercial air traffic.
Again, I'm not sure about any of this. Can anyone help straighten me out? :)

No such rules long time ago, dozens of cities, incl Chengdu, Kunming, Xian, Urumqi, Xiamen, Shenyang, Harbin, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing, Lasa, Changchun, Fuzhou etc have regular international routes, and will have more cities in future.
General Huo January 7th, 2005, 03:51 PM If only Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and HK allow fly international routes, these big four would have much more passengers, but I think current policy are more friendly and convenient to the passengers, basically saving time and having more choice. However it makes Seoul, Tokyo and Bangkok as a transfer hub for many Chinese passengers, they all have many flights to many Chinese cities, and I remember when I took the flight transfered at Tokyo and Seoul, half of the passengers on the planes from Tokyo or Seoul to US are Chinese.

Harry Potter China February 21st, 2005, 04:06 PM I believe Shanghai Pudong International Airport's final size would be bigger than Beijing Capital International Airport, even with Terminal 3 in place. Guangzhou Baiyun would have a much bigger terminal area but would be smaller than Bejing Capital in total land area.
Guangzhou Baiyun's latest design has five terminals and about two hundred gates. How can its two runways support the expected number of aircraft it could handle at a time (which is somewhere near 200)?
The terminal 3 at Beijing Capital will have 66 gates upon completion but will eventually have 120 gates when the final phase is completed (date unknown).
I think Shanghai Pudong's Masterplan is the best among the three. It will have a total area of 4,000 hectares [Beijing Capital's land area (once T3 is complete) will be 2,600 hectares]. It will have at least four runways and can further rise to six when the need arises. This masive masterplan however pales in comparison with other aerotropolis developments in Asia like: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (in Sepang, Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan Area, Malaysia) which has 10,000 hectares in reserved land for expansion, and Seoul Incheon's 5,617 hectares--makes Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok International Airport seem small (a huge reclaimed airport between two islands west of Seoul). For a look at my list of the world's largest airports by land area go to "The World's Largest Airports" thread. :) :) :)

superchan7 April 12th, 2005, 12:08 PM Guangzhou looks like the most sophisticated airport out of these. Chinese airports nowadays are all big and glassy, but the creativity stops there. They all have arched roofwork and glass curtain down the sides. Guangzhou's looks the most creative.

BarbaricManchurian November 7th, 2008, 01:04 AM ^^very tastefully designed, I like it. However, it seems like it while be a while until all the gates will be used, very few non-freight flights are flown to or from here. The old terminal was an industrial park building! But this actually feels like a grand entrance into the city of Tianjin, a major upgrade. Is there plans for metro to this airport? I know it's somewhat far from the city center, but they already have a metro line running 5km away, maybe just need to add a spur.
