This thread is begin for Old Ladoga ROA thread series.
The world's most oldest Kremlin in Wolrd. It was built in about 753.
The fortress standing now at the Ladozhsky cape at the junction of the Volkhov and the Ladozhka rivers, is the third one. The first fortress was built by prince Oleg the Soothsayer at the turn of 9-10th centuries. At the same site in 1114 the Novgorodian prince Mstislav the Great and posadnik (governor of medieval Russian city, appointed by prince or elected by citizens) Pavel founded a new fortress with walls 8 meters high and 2 meters thick. The fortress resisted the attacks of the Finns in 1144 and the Swedes in 1164. It was reconstructed in the 15th century in connection with the introduction of fire-arms. The Gate Tower and Clements' Tower have survived to the present day as well as the wall between them (in the 20th century they were reconstructed on the original foundation); but only ruins of the former Raskatnaya (Peal), Strelochnaya (Pointer) and Tainichnaya (Secrecy) Towers and of the north-western and eastern walls can be seen nowadays.
