engineer.akash February 14th, 2010, 10:04 AM I am against fertile lands conversion for SEZ's . That is why many SEZ's in India are having problems...lack of transparency.,foreceful acquisitions, poor compensation etc.

Krishnamoorthy K February 14th, 2010, 10:15 AM bearys group will be starting their new project named turning point in derlakatte 19+ floors, 450 flats
Renders of this has been posted several times. It is on Mangalore city scapes and high rises. May be a seperate thread?Any new renders because the previous render does not add to 19 plus floors!
I think only following two Beary's proposed projects have 19+ floors:
Bearys Group
1. Golden Harvest

Beary's Golden Beach render is not available.
Beary's Valencia is under construction on Kankanady-Valencia-Nandigudde road. They have left all trees surrounding the building untouched. It will be a lovely green building surrounded by full greenery. And as we know lot of environmental activists are staying in Valencia. So there may be a lot of demand.
Krishnamoorthy K February 14th, 2010, 10:24 AM true Ajay I too am against industrialization on fertile lands.:ohno:
Yes Akash. I am against both Industrialization and Real Estates on fertile lands.
In Dakshina Kannada district most of the cultivation is commercial corps like rubber, areca, ... As far as food security is concerned it does not make difference whether these lands are used for cultivation of commercial corps or industrialization or real estates. But environment wise they may make a lot of difference. That is why I prefer high rises leaving enough space for agriculture and forest.
India101 February 14th, 2010, 11:44 AM Moorthy your right, those are the only 19fl+ projects in Mangalore by the Bearys group. This is Bearys Turning Point & it doesn't look 19fls.

Yes Krishnamoorthy,I don't mind Karnataka being called as underdeveloped or non industrialized but we will face heavy/dire serious consequences if we let our forests and green cover go for industries.
As civil engineers we are also taught that we humans must not play with nature especially. We can at maximum mitigate the effects of nature's fury but not prevent.
Best example being the Koyna dam,we cannot predict when a 8+ (absolute moment EQ) can hit cities like mumbai, pune, kolhapur, belgaum and goa.
Recurrence period is just theoretical but in practical we cant predict when the fault releases energy.
We better not play with the nature.:ohno:
engineer.akash February 14th, 2010, 12:38 PM Indian seismic zone map
Krishnamoorthy and Ajay you may have a look at the zones of seismic activity
http://www.mapsofindia.com/maps/india/india-map-seismiczone.jpg
Mysore= safe
Bangalore= safe(more study is required as fault runs through Mandya-chennapatna)
Mangalore= moderate
Belgaum=moderate
Hubli-Dharwad= safe
Krishnamoorthy K February 14th, 2010, 02:37 PM ^^
The map has to be updated with recent data. Bangalore-Mysore region to be changed to zone3.
http://asc-india.org/maps/seismi/seis-karnataka-goa.gif
In recent years much of the seismic activity in the state of Karnataka has been in the south, in the Mysore-Bangalore region. Historically tremors have occurred in many other parts of the state such as Bellary. Recent studies (7) have identified several active faults in the region, in particular in the coastal plain near the towns of Bhatkal and Udipi, trending in an ESE-WNW direction. Many of the faults continue (2, 7) offshore into the Arabian Sea trending in the same direction. There is also no evidence (7) of the southward continuation of the West Coast Fault in the Konkan regions of the neighbouring state of Maharashtra as previously believed. However, it must be stated that proximity to faults does not necessarily translate into a higher hazard as compared to areas located further away, as damage from earthquakes depends on numerous factors such as subsurface geology as well as adherence to the building codes.
ASC India (http://asc-india.org/seismi/seis-karnataka-goa.htm)
So coastal region is less active and faults are towards Udupi and North. Mangalore is relatively safe.

As a layman I am making following points to which seimologists may have different opinions:
Bellary region marked highly seismic hazardous as it contains lot of iron ore and so heavy? Any idea whether extraction of iron ore and mining of granite and exporting reduce the pressure on plates in those region? There is also Tungabhadra dam.
Extraction of iron ore from western ghats reduces possibility of earthquakes?
As people switch over to mass transportation system weight due to extra density of vehicles would be reduced and hence possibility of earthquake?

This delectable concoction was apparently first whipped up in Hotel Diana in Udupi. Of course, once people got a taste of it, they flocked to the parlour and its fame spread - and how! For me, Udupi evokes only two images - The temple of Krishna and Gadbad of Diana. (not necessarily in the same order ;))

Welcome to the site. There are two IDEALS in Hampkankatta and Pabbas at Lalbagh. (UNLESS THEY HAVE EXPANDED). Akash ,IDEALS is one of the biggest exclusive ice cream parlour in India. The GHS road has a seating capacity of nearly 400 and is full most the the time. The group had a turnover of about 300 cores/ year 6 years ago..It must have increased. Imagine 300 plus crores just by selling icecreams in Mangalore city. I have been to many Indian cities and I am yet to see a place like this and of course icecream as good as these!

I never knew that
Krishnamoorthy K February 15th, 2010, 01:41 PM MANGALORE, February 15, 2010: The National Highway Mangalore division is in a fix, it can’t find contractors to repair the NH 48 stretch in the Shirady ghat. Contractors who have carried out the repair and relaying work on this stretch are unsure of giving warranty to the longevity of the road. They want the government to control the overloading of trucks that carry iron and manganese fines to the New Mangalore Port.
The Shirady ghat section was closed for traffic in October 2007 following the complete erosion of the road due to heavy movement of overloaded trucks.
Speaking to Mangalorean.com one of the contractors who carried out a part of the work on the stretch last time Ramesh Kumar Kottari told that he and two other contractors were ready to give warranty to the road provided the government adheres to the recommendations of the Indian Road Congress on over loading. “According to the recommendations a truck with 6 wheels can carry up to 10 tonnes and truck with 10 wheels can carry up to 16 tonnes. But the Transport authorities were allowing them to carry 40 tonnes”.
http://mangalorean.com/images/newstemp24/20100215shiradi1.jpg
“Overloading is a universal problem; all roads in the state were being eroded due to the overloading. The only way it could be stopped was by strictly enforcing the loading discipline. The PWD has issued circulars to all the deputy commissioners of all the districts in the state to adopt zero tolerance stands towards overloading” says an official at NH Mangalore.
A paper by Balabhaskara Reddy, senior structural engineer, and A.Veeraraghavan of Bangalore University, which has been entitled "Effects of overloading and introduction of tandem-axle trucks on pavement life", highlights the structural damage to a pavement system caused by overloaded commercial vehicles.
The paper says overloading of trucks has assumed menacing proportions in the country. The structural adequacy of the pavement on National Highways is inadequate to withstand the increased magnitude of axle loads. The multi-axle vehicles reduce the impact of motion on the road and distribute the weight of the vehicle and the load evenly.
Executive Engineer of State National Highways S. Gopal says to minimise the intensity of damage, the National Highways, has recommended to the Government that weighbridges be constructed along the highways to bind the operators to conform to the rules and Registered Laden Weight (RLW) norms. The life of the roads with three layers of metal is three to five years depending on the volume of traffic. The lifespan is calculated on the basis of 10,000 passenger car units (PCU). One bus is equated to eight PCUs. The thickness of the road is determined on the basis of the California bearing ratio which is based on the potential load-carrying capacity.
The National Highways reports show that the percentage of vehicles moving on National Highway 48 with single rear axles (exceeding the prescribed 10.2 tonnes of load) was 55.3. Tandem-axle vehicles exceeding the prescribed 18 tonnes form 42.9 percent. The last review of the situation was made in 2003 which showed that the percentage would increase at 2.5 per cent a year.
The excessive wear and tear of National Highways, particularly at the curves, has been attributed to single-axle overloaded trucks.

Krishnamoorthy K February 15th, 2010, 01:43 PM MANGALORE: The railway level-crossing at Mahakalipadpu was closed four times within 40 minutes on Sunday — at 8.15 a.m., 8.25 a.m., 8.40 a.m. and 8.55 a.m.
As it was not a working day, those stuck at the level-crossing were saved from the problems of reaching their offices and schools late. But, this may happen on working days too. On Saturday, it was closed thrice between 7.55 a.m. and 8.45 a.m. Many buses and vans carrying schoolchildren had to suffer, according to residents of the area. The official statistics show that the manned gate had to be closed 24 times between 4.20 a.m. and 10.05 p.m. on February 13. “Some times, the gate needs to be closed so often during peak hours that the person operating the gate finds it difficult to stop movement of vehicles to bring down the stoppers,” said U. Mohammed, a resident of the area and owner of a sari store here. According to Abdul Aziz, resident of Mahakalipadpu, the vehicle-users — particularly, the school and office-goers have a harrowing time every day. He said, about six months ago, a 52-year-old patient could not be taken to the hospital in time because of the level-crossing. The person died of severe cardiac arrest, Mr. Aziz said.
Mr. Mohammed said that the Railways could easily address this problem, without acquiring land. The Railways owns large vacant lands on either side of the track near the level-crossing, towards the north-west (towards Mangalore Central station). An underpass could be constructed about 100 metres away from the present level-crossing. This would enable vehicle-users coming from Morgan Gate to take a left turn whenever the gate closes, move about 100 metres parallel to the railway line, take a U-turn at the underpass and move on the existing road on the other side of the track towards the level-crossing and reach their destination, without any hassle, he suggested.
The residents said they would submit a memorandum to the Minister of State for Railways E. Ahammed in this regard on Monday. Mr. Ahmed is visiting the city to inaugurate the Food Plaza at the Mangalore Central Railway Station at 3 p.m.

Thanks Visnaya .I am adding a bit more. The owners of Natural icecream started a resort near Adyar.
Shetty ice cream HQ used to be at Kulai . I have gone there several times with mess secretaries(then KREC) for ice cream tasting sessions .(Every Sunday ,Icrecream used to be on menu). Their cream parlour was located very close to Vijaya pen mart at the begining of market road. In the late 70's of eighties they converted it into a posh fast food joint with colourful displays. I forgot its name...some eye catching name. For some reason that did not survive...Was the building demolished . May be Mangalore was too early for such an experiment.Except Nirullas in connought place I do not think fast food had really caught up anywhere else in those days.
There was an icecream parlour in Souza arcade...very expensive I have been told.

engineer.akash February 16th, 2010, 11:23 AM Mangalore: Gujjara Kere rejuvenation begins
MANGALORE Feb 16: The Mangalore City Corporation on Monday formally began rejuvenating the Gujjara Kere, an old lake at Jeppu here.
The silt in the tank was last removed during March-April, 2002 by the Department of Minor Irrigation.
The contractor was emptying water in the lake on Monday.
The lake is not being used by people.
K.N. Vijayaprakash, Commissioner of the corporation, told The Hindu that the lake would be rejuvenated at an estimated cost of Rs. 2 crore.
The first phase of works, which began on Monday, was estimated to cost Rs. 99.5 lakh. The second phase was estimated to cost Rs. 1 crore. A proposal to this effect had been sent to the Government and approval was awaited, he said.
M.K. Bhasker, Executive Engineer of the corporation, said the first phase of the works included removal of silt and strengthening of the bund on one side of the lake. Seating arrangements would be made on the bund and steps would be created on the inner ring of the lake, he said. Mr. Bhasker said that the contractor had been given two months to complete the first phase.
The office-bearers of the Gujjara Kere Tirtha Samrakshana Vedike, an action committee formed by the residents of Jeppu to fight for the lakes rejuvenation, have been urging the Government for over six years for the rejuvenation.
According to P. Nemu Kottari, secretary of the vedike, a recent survey conducted by the Mangalore taluk office had brought to light encroachment of 10.43 cents of the 3.43-acre lake.
The survey was conducted on May 14 and June 24, 2009, acting on a demand by the vedike, he said.
Quoting the survey report, Mr. Kottari said that an anganwadi building and a petty shop had been built in the lake area. In addition, three private parties had encroached upon the lake area. A part of the lake area had also been used for laying a road on one side, the report said.
Mr. Kottari said that, if maintained properly, the lake could meet the entire drinking water needs of the city. According to him, the wells in nearly 800 houses around the lake have never gone dry because the tank water recharges the water table.

Krishnamoorthy K February 16th, 2010, 04:38 PM At a time when its own domestic production of oil and gas is declining at the rate of 7 per cent annually, state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp or ONGC is now set to bring imported liquefied natural gas to India by setting up an LNG regasification terminal on the west coast.
Sources say for doing so, ONGC may invest between Rs 4000 -5000 crore in the proposed project and has already identified land in Mangalore SEZ.
The company has sent feelers to Papua New Guinea for sourcing LNG. The terminal would have an initial capacity to regasify upto 4 million tonnes of LNG a year and funded only via equity.
ONGC management is tight lipped about the details on specific project but R S Sharma, CMD of ONGC said: "Our focus right now is Iran project from where we are planning to import LNG. We are also looking at opportunities in Qatar. And yes we have earmarked land for the RLNG terminal in Mangalore."
When it comes to consuming gas in India there is no dearth of costumers starting from the government owned gas transporter GAIL to the gas starved power plants. And needless to mention ONGC's own MoU with sister downstream company BPCL that will require plenty of gas for the city gas distribution projects.

visnaya February 16th, 2010, 07:08 PM The Bejai church to Kadripark concreat road(basveshwar circle road, or Karnataka politechnique end point ).
The Road has come out really well. I can not imagine such a road and with such a pace road can happen in mangalore. One more point to add is the foundation that they have given to the road and the thickness they have used for concreat. this should last for 50 years. I have captured the same in the photo( just to give the feel).
This is the starting point near Bejai church.
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/9606/mangalorebejaikadripark.jpg
both side Road is finished after some distance
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/3599/mangalorebejaikadriparkg.jpg
half way through where Kadri kambla road meets ( right side) and Road turn left. till here both side concreat is done. The angle they have to the road is also good. One more point I have noticed is after the 4 way also many palces they have marked as 9meter at many place. are they mean still 9meter goes after this.
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/9606/mangalorebejaikadripark.jpg
From here steapness increases. with this steapness one can understand the topography of mangalore. From this point one way concreat is done till end point KPT).

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/9606/mangalorebejaikadripark.jpg
These three images are just to show the thichness of concreat they have used and its base. most of the roads in india become bad because of lack of proper foundation to the road.http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/1430/mangalorebejaikadriparkb.jpg

2. Lay the telephone, water pipes etc
3. Cover this to make foot path
This is a good idea. the road need not have to be dug up for laying the cable, pipe etc. It is easy to remove the footpath cover and re place them.
I have given the glimps of the same. But the large amount of roads are still not tocuhed. might be they are waiting for acquization of land.

engineer.akash February 17th, 2010, 06:01 PM District admin proposes parking regulations
TNN, Feb 17, 2010, 09.25pm IST
MANGALORE: The district administration, keeping in mind the larger public good and to ensure smooth flow of traffic, has proposed a regulation of parking along main thoroughfares in the city. This entails paid parking in certain areas, total ban of parking in other areas, as well as angled (45 degree) and parallel parking in identified areas. The aim of this move is to decongest roads, especially during peak hours, an official release here states.
Accordingly, time based paid parking will be ushered on Balmatta Road. Four-wheelers can be parked at an angle from gate of Christian Institute up to Athree Book Centre, and two wheelers in the same fashion from the book centre up to Prabhat Automobiles. Four-wheelers may be parked parallel from Time Square building at Emjays Complex up to Wine Gate along Balmatta Road. Two wheelers should not be parked on this stretch.
Two wheelers can be parked at an angle along left side compound of Skyline Arcade up to Don Bosco Hall cross, and from here up to Liquid Lounge. Four wheelers can be parked at an angle from Liquid Lounge up to Hotel Soorya. Two wheelers can be parked at an angle in front of Khazana Jewellers. Two and four wheelers can be parked in batches from A B Shetty Circle up to the football ground gate at an angle.
The same parking strategy will be applicable for the stretch of road between Karavali Utsav ground up to Lady Hill Circle. The left hand stretch from Balmatta Circle up to gate of Christian Institute is now a no-parking area. This is to facilitate construction of a bus stand there. Vehicle owners henceforth cannot park on right hand side of the road from Ambedkar (Jyothi) Circle up to Lord Krishna Bank at Milagres, the release states.
Parking is also prohibited on the left hand side of the road from Milagres Mansion building up to Hampankatta Circle and on both sides of the road from in front of Alukkas Jewellers on Light House Hill Road up to main gate of Tagore Park atop the road. DC V Ponnuraj told TOI that a final notification on the above proposal would be issued in the next seven to 10 days after taking note of public feedback.

Krishnamoorthy K February 17th, 2010, 06:35 PM ^^ Nothing about parking on footpath?
On KRR Road, Jyothi-Bunts Circle most congested places are Goldfinch, Somayaji complex, Buildings at Bunts circle, Mahendra Arcade, both sides of KRR Road near PVS circle.
On MG Road parking area is available from MCC building upto Lalbaugh. Nobody uses it. But in nearby parts of MG Road they create congestion by parking on footpath and forcing pedestrians to walk on road. On Urwa stores road also near Chilimbi Hill Road parking area is available. But people don't use them, they park in front of buildings conveniently making two three rows (actually no order as such) of parked vehicles in a haphazard manner. So lazy to walk a little distance after parking? I doubt very much that people would park in parking complexes once they come up???
ajay ramchandran February 17th, 2010, 11:37 PM http://idealicecream.in/contact.php
http://idealicecream.in/product.php
S. Prabhakar Kamath, the founder of Ideal ice creams started out in business dealing in tailoring material and firecrackers. Seasonal fluctuations in those businesses got him thinking on a more secure line of business that would be in demand throughout the year. So, he decided to start an ice cream parlour in spite of there being fierce competition in the segment.
Setting out to make the best ice cream possible, he taught himself the art of ice cream making and conducted experiments at home, testing his creations on enthusiastic neighbours. Three months later he launched Ideal Ice Cream Parlour on Market Road in Mangalore on May 1, 1975 with14 flavours. The rest is history.
In two short years the ice creams that he manufactured so tantalized the taste buds of Mangaloreans that people were willing to wait in queue just to get a chance to savour the ice cream. With the growing demand, expansion was inevitable. Today Ideal Ice Cream has three parlours in Mangalore city, one of which is the largest ice cream parlour in the country, and a restaurant and ice cream parlour in the Infosys office complex. Ideal Ice Cream is also available through 500 dealers. Its retail network also stretches across coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Goa.
Since the beginning, innovation has been a mainstay of Ideal Ice Cream and the famous Ice cream concoction ‘Gadbad’ bears testimony to this. Ask anyone what Ideal Ice Cream is most famous for and you will get the answer ‘Gadbad’. So popular is this ice cream dessert that it has now become a generic name and imitations of this can be found in almost any ice cream parlour in coastal Karnataka.
Mr. Kamath’s passion for quality has elevated his ice cream brand to an iconic status in coastal Karnataka. A ‘must visit’ place for anyone visiting Mangalore. Ideal Ice creams unique recipes now extend to 22 flavours and from them Ideal creates about 100 combinations – each with a distinctive and indulgent taste that makes it a truly outstanding experience.
Joined by his son Mukund Kamath, the Ideal brand has grown in leaps and bounds. Mukund has trained at the Central Food Technology & Research Institute in Mysore and also the National Dairy Research Institute of Bangalore. Together they sample every single batch of ice cream that comes out of their factory. What’s significant about Ideal Ice Cream is that it is 100% vegetarian. No egg is used. Just pure fresh milk, cream and a secret formula that remains within the family.
In recent time Ideal Ice Cream has diversified its product portfolio to include a number of retails products. These include Ice Candies, Chocobars, Ice Lollies, Choconutz, Ice Cream Cones, Ice Cream Sundaes and cups in a variety of flavours.
To this day, Ideal Ice Cream remains committed to developing exceptional new super premium Ice Cream experiences, releasing new flavors every year.

avi mangalore February 18th, 2010, 05:55 AM ideal icecream really rocks, even when they close the pabbas parlour at around 9.00pm u can still see hordes of people still ariving to savour icecreams, i think even if they keep it till 11.30pm still its worthwhile, as more people would like a quick icecream after dinner.
ideal icecream also has a counter at the food court at empire mall, one more counter of theirs will be opening soon at citycenter foodcourt.

engineer.akash February 18th, 2010, 12:15 PM Mangalore: One more train to Mumbai likely soon
MANGALORE Feb 17: Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL) is said to have written to the Railway Board on January 12 seeking approval for extending the Mumbai-Karwar superfast train up to Mangalore. The train is expected to maintain its current frequency of thrice a week.
According to R.L. Dias, president of the Udupi-based Railway Yatri Sangha, which has been in the forefront of the demand for the trains extension, KRCLs letter has also highlighted the schedules and the composition of the train. Mr. Dias said that an announcement about the extension of the train is expected to be made in the Railway Budget. The train service might even start on the extended route within 20 days after the budget presentation, he said.
According to Mr. Dias, the train is expected to have 17 coaches, including 10 second class sleeper coaches, one two-tier AC, two three-tier AC coaches, two chair cars, one luggage van and a guard van.
Proposal
Chief Operations Manager of KRCL K.L. Dixit had written to Mr. Dias a couple of months ago that there was a proposal for extending the service of this train up to Mangalore on a regular basis. Mr. Dias had met Chairman of KRCL C.P. Tayal in Belapur in this regard more than two months ago.
The Railway Yatri Sangha had, in its letters to KRCL, also observed that Mangalore and Manipal had emerged as two major health and education destinations, not only for those living in the surrounding areas but also for those in Kerala and north India. It had said that there were many pilgrimage centres in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts and hence the train would be well-patronised.

Krishnamoorthy K February 19th, 2010, 05:22 AM * Bids for comprehensive computerisation have already been invited
* Project estimated to cost about Rs. 10 crore
* It aims at speeding up delivery of services
MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation will computerise its entire administrative operations at an estimated cost of Rs. 7 crore to Rs. 10 crore shortly, according to its Commissioner K.N. Vijayaprakash.
The civic body invited bids for the process in the first week of this month, he told The Hindu.
At present, only some of its operations such as issuing birth and death certificates and maintaining data, issuing trade licences, maintaining accounts and water supply billing have been computerised. .
The objective of the computerisation drive was to reduce the use of paper, increase transparency and speed up delivery of services, he said.
E-tendering
The Commissioner said that the civic body would shortly switch to e-tendering (inviting bids online).
Mr. Vijayaprakash said that although second week of March had been fixed as the deadline for completing the process of bid submission, the civic body was planning to extend it because it wanted to provide some time for the corporation to switch over to e-tendering system. As a first step in this direction, the very process of inviting bids for computerisation was itself being done online, he said.
The successful bidder would have to develop software for different sections of the corporation, upload existing documents, maintain data, hardware, software, networking and UPS systems for five years. He would have to supply computer systems and printers and also maintain them. Once the entire system was set up, people would be able to access information through the Internet, Mr. Vijayaprakash said.
The Commissioner said that the civic body had plans to introduce integrated voice recording system for recording people’s complaints through voice. Now, people were filing complaints in writing or sending e-complaints on www.mangalorecity.gov.in.
However, G. Hanumantha Kamath, president, Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi, Mangalore, is not optimistic about the success of e-governance in the corporation. Vested interests were against the transparency attached to e-governance and they might scuttle its implementation, he said.

engineer.akash February 19th, 2010, 10:28 PM Urban development plan seeks balance
MANGALORE: Finding a perfect solution to problems of urban development is a complex task as it involves a gamut of problems that cannot be addressed singularly through a policy, said A Ravindra, adviser to chief minister on urban affairs here on Friday.
Speaking at the one-day workshop on `Draft urban development policy' here, Ravinndra said probably for the first time in the country a policy was being formulated inviting public opinion. "Our intention is that the policy should be discussed widely and address all concerned," he said observing that such workshops have been held at Bangalore, Mysore and Hubli-Dharward.
Indicating that more than 50% of the global population was urbanized, he said in India it was less due to various issues. Ravindra said new inputs will make the policy robust as treading the old path of development will stymie development.
In his introductory remarks, deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj brought to the notice of Ravindra issues on development of the coastal region. He said the policy has given importance to Bangalore, Mysore and Hubli-Dharward, but Mangalore was developing at a faster pace than the latter two cities.
Regarding the move to abolish Urban Development Authorities, DC said the District Planning Committees (DPCs) will not do justice to urban development as their focus was more rural-centric. Emphasizing that an urban-centric approach should be given priority, Ponnuraj said the DPC was just a namesake body. He also suggested making the urban local body (ULB) chief as the chairman of the DPC, instead of a zilla panchayat head, which could give more focus to urban-centric approach.
Ponnuraj said during funds allocation in ULBs there should be guided mechanism so that priority wards get maximum funding instead of equal distribution of allocation. The DC also suggested the need for co-ordination between different local bodies; more focus on housing for economically weak sections; method for arriving for tariffs (water, drainage etc) so that it could be self sustaining.
Mayor Shankar Bhat said though many states had mayor in council type of administration, he rued that Karnataka still did not think it fit to have one. Bhat also had a word of caution saying that after taking all inputs it should not be said that Mangalore cannot be included in UDP as it did not have the required population while implementing the policy, like it happened in the case of JNNURM.

I do not think Mangalore has been left out. I am an optimist. The decan herald article clearly stated that Mangalore ,Hubli and Belgaum would be added at the end of the year or that funds would only come after a year. So I am not surprised at the Mayor's statement.

Akash ,the most important thing is money..there is only a limited pot of money but lots of programmes ...there will be cuts! UK is facing a very bad finacial situation. Come 2011 there is going to be lots of cuts in various depts. They borrowed 176 billion pounds to sort out the bankers and now it has to be returned. That is possible only by cuts or increasing taxes. Increasing taxes is unpopular. So they will cuts various services .After the recent heavy snow roads have developed potholes . There are 176 million potholes in 241,000 miles of non motorway roads in the UK and it will take 15 years to repair it. Most of the roads are in the south. You will not believe this. There is just no money to repair this. They are doing patch works just like in India.Otherwise roads network is very well developed here thanks to the investments made 40 years ago or so.

engineer.akash February 20th, 2010, 12:40 PM Did 'lore' have a meaning? And is there one for Bang(:shifty:), Beng and Mang?
India 101 am answering your query here
Bangalore got its name from "Benda kal " which means boiled beans
Mangalore got its name from the Godess Mangala devi
It so happened that both the parental names of the cities ended with letter L
Now in Kannada oor means place,so britishers cut the names to Bangalore and Mangalore.

ajay ramchandran February 20th, 2010, 06:44 PM RTI application exposes doublespeak on introduction of KSRTC buses
Staff Correspondent
http://www.hindu.com/2010/02/20/stories/2010022062280300.htm
Deputy Commissioner recently said that KSRTC had not applied for permits-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18 applications have been submitted for operating 103 routes
‘Private bus owners’ lobby is stalling
the process’
MANGALORE: Even as a top official stated recently that the KSRTC had not even applied for permits to operate its Volvo buses between Mangalore and Udupi, president of the Nagarika Hitarakshana Samiti Hanumantha Kamath has found that the KSRTC has paid Rs. 1,71,900 to the Dakshina Kannada Regional Transport Authority for permits to operate its buses within the city and between Udupi and Mangalore.
Through an RTI application to the Mangalore division of KSRTC here, Mr. Kamath found that between November 4, 2004 and December 16, 2009, the Regional Transport Authority received 18 applications from the KSRTC seeking permits for operating 103 routes in the region, including the Udupi-Mangalore route.
However, Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj, on February 5, said that the Regional Transport Authority, which he heads, had not received any application for introduction of KSRTC buses between Udupi and Mangalore.
The issue gains significance in the light of repeated promises made by Transport Minister R. Ashok that Government-owned buses would soon be introduced in the region to counter the monopoly and growing clout of private bus operators.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Kamath said, “On what basis did the Deputy Commissioner make such a claim? Has he been misguided by RTO officials or is he trying to hide the facts?”
Mr. Kamath pointed out that the RTA had not responded to KSRTC’s applications. “They (RTA) have neither agreed nor disagreed to issue permits.
The applications have not even figured in the several RTA meetings and adalats conducted in the past few months,” he said.
Alleging that the private bus owners’ lobby was behind the attempts to stall the introduction of government buses, he said that several other concessions had been made by the authorities towards private buses. “Some private buses are entering the State Bank of India bus-stop without permits. But the authorities look the other way,” he said.
Demanding that the district administration immediately initiate steps to introduce government buses from here to Udupi, Moodbidri, Karkala and Mudipu, in addition to city buses, Mr. Kamath said the new findings about the pending applications would be raised during the upcoming RTA adalat.

I don't think they will peep in here,I will try to meet them personally, atleast the additional DC of mysore is very well known to me,also the DC of mysore is an alumnus of NIT Trichy,my undergraduate institute so would be easy to get cozy with him to put forth the ideas what we discuss here.
One thing I hate is the dust on the roads, why cant they provide us dust/dirt/mud free roads?? Atleast Mysore in that sense is better off compared to many other tier two Indian cities, but still much more can be done like landscaping and all,I hope to meet them soon, also would like to have a footpath insured in one of the prominent commercial areas of mysore.
Hubli city is the first in India to get a road insured by the citizens of the city also made it to the Limca book of records,Hope to replicate the same for a footpath in Mysore, apparently the master mind behind the Hubli road insurance scheme is in contact with me so it would be easy for me to implement it,but need some motivated young citizens.
Only wish SSC has more reach to the common man.

Special Correspondent :There is no coordination between authorities and contractors, say people
Earthmover has damaged water pipes at three places on Attavar main road
Photo: R. Eswarraj NEW PROBLEM: The water pipeline damaged by an earthmover on the Attavar main road in Mangalore on Saturday.
MANGALORE: One half of the 100-m stretch of a tarred road near Marnamikatte has been dug up for a month now. Another two-lane concrete road between Marnamikatte and Koti Chennayya Circle has not been opened to traffic, even though it was almost ready more than three weeks ago.
Residents of the area attribute these inconveniences to lack of coordination between the contractors and the corporation authorities, and improper planning. On Saturday, a fresh problem arose when an earthmover damaged water pipelines at three places near Koti Chennayya Circle.
Autorickshaw drivers at Marnamikatte said the road should not have been dug up if the planners were not sure of taking up the work.
Residents of the area pointed out that the curing of a new concrete road from Marnamikatte Circle to Koti Chennayya Cricle was over 20 days ago. “The authorities have not taken steps to open this road to traffic,” said T.K. Sudhir, a resident and district secretary of the Congress.
M.K. Bhasker, Executive Engineer of the corporation, was under the impression that traffic had been allowed on this stretch.
On being told about the reality, he promised to get it opened in two days.
The contractor also promised to open the stretch to traffic from Monday. Mr. Bhasker and the contractor said that the road was dug up near Marnamikatte Circle for the concreting work. But the entire project staff and machinery had to be diverted after the corporation decided to first complete the stretch between Valentia Circle and Koti Chennayya Circle in view of the problems being faced by the road-users there. This work would be completed by February-end. The earlier work would begin later, they said.
Meanwhile, the concreting of the stretch between Koti Chennayya Circle and Madhusudan Kushe School was taken up on Saturday. But, the earthmover being used there damaged the water pipeline at three places within about 150 metres from Koti Chennayya Circle on the Attavar Main Road.
While Attavar councillor Vijayalakshmi put the blame on the contractor, Mr. Bhaskar said this had not come to his notice. He, however, promised to look into the problem.

In future we might find lots of projects coming near the Mangalore Railway junction, I mean between Padil,Railway junction and Jeppinamoguru. But will it destroy the last bit of greenery that prevails in this region.Having said that any commercial developments will improve road connectivity, public transport etc.
engineer.akash February 21st, 2010, 01:59 PM Ajay,I got the details of the latest size o Mysore city urban area,it works out to be 156.69 Sq KM,from the Mysore city ORR CDP doc file
Mangalore is around 170 Sq KM
Hubli-Dharwad might be around 240 Sq KM,everyday a new layout is being added in Hubli-Dharwad
Belgaum (my guess) =120 Sq KM
Once all these cities touch 200 Sq KM then they would qualify to be called as Big cities.
Hubli-Dharwad is the only city right now,Hope to see Mangalore touch 200 Sq KM very soon.
Mysore if areas like belavadi, nanjangud then it would zoom past 500 Sq KM  that is not far away.
I also read that Mangalore CDP wants to expand the city to 300 sq KM ,likewise Mysore CDP plans 500 Sq KM.

They should have added Ullal TMC long time ago but there was lot of politics. MCC would then would have qualified for JNNURM without any(begging) problem as ullal population is more than a lakh

MANGALORE TO MOODABIDRI IN THE EAST
MANGALORE TO BC ROAD IN THE EAST
MANGALORE TO THALAPADY IN THE SOUTH
MANGALORE TO MUDIPU,KONAJE ETC TO THE SOUTH EAST

Mysore on the other hand is quite congested,Hubli city old area is damn sick highly congested and choking, new areas of Hubli are really awesome with spacious open spaces and wide roads.
How is Mangalore old area???
Very crowded,. Hampankatta, old car street,Maidan Road,Bunder are all part of old Mangalore. The very fact that Hampankatta traffic junction is the second busiest in the state proves that!

They must think of flyovers in the city,as Mangalore is not planned so flyovers can only ease out things, also mangalore's outlook is more westernized no much heritage outlook so there would be no opposition from any pocket to go for good designed flyovers.
Mysore is also congested but the layout of the city lets it breathe smoothly, unlike other cities this city is brimming with heritage so no one would dare think of flyovers and all,Mysore is well planned so necessitates no flyovers.
Mangalore definitely needs few flyovers at some junctions.:ohno:

Proposal was submitted to State Finance Commission early this month
Rs. 50 crore has been sought for renovation of Central Market

DEVELOPMENT: Mangalore City Corporation has sought Rs.4 crore for a railway underpass at the Morgans Gate in Mangalore where frequent closure of the gate is posing problems to vehicle-users.
MANGALORE: Re-building the central market, constructing flyovers at Hampankatta and Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT) Junction, rejuvenating Emme Kere, an old lake, and re-constructing the large stormwater drains in the city are among the development projects the Mangalore City Corporation plans to take up during 2010-11.
Commissioner of the corporation K.N. Vijayaprakash told The Hindu that the Rs. 402-crore proposal for infrastructure development was submitted to A.G. Kodgi, chairman of the State’s Third Finance Commission, earlier this month. According to the proposal, the corporation has sought Rs. 50 crore for renovating the Central Market, Rs. 25 crore for constructing an overpass at Hampankatta Circle and Rs. 20 crore for another overpass at KPT Junction.
The civic body has demanded Rs. 40 crore for re-constructing large stormwater drains and Rs. 14 crore for rejuvenating the Emme Kere.
The corporation has sought Rs. 4 crore each for building railway underpasses at Padil and Morgan’s Gate (near Mahakalipadpu), and a railway overpass at Jeppu (on the Kankanady-Morgan’s Gate Road). It has sought Rs. 50 crore for concreting a few more tarred and another Rs. 25 crore for re-laying many existing tarred roads as, he said. Mr. Vijayaprakash said that sewage lines were there in only 30 per cent of the residential localities. Besides, the sewage lines in old Mangalore area needed to be renovated. The civic had sought Rs. 33 crore for both these works, he said. Other works for which funds had been sought included re-construction of general market at Urwa Stores and Urwa Market, fish market near city bus-stand, flower market at Car Street, development of Kadri Park, Tagore Park and Radio Park and repair of Town Hall, besides land acquisition in Pumpwell area for a new bus-stand and associated facilities there, he said.
Mayor M. Shankar Bhat said that the State Finance Commission had sanctioned more than Rs. 20 crore for 2009-10, which was being utilised for laying concrete roads and other works.
Mr. Bhat, who is the vice-president of Karnataka Council of Mayors and executive committee member of All India Council of Mayors, said that the city corporations in the State were incurring huge revenue loss after the lifting of Octroi in the State two decades ago.
The MCC would have earned an annual revenue of Rs. 75 crore from Octroi alone, if it had not been abolished, he said.

engineer.akash February 23rd, 2010, 03:24 PM Mangalore: Gujjre Kere to be restored
MANGALORE, February 22, 2010: Finally the fabled Gujjere Kere will be restored to its pristine beauty and purity. The state environment and ecology minister Mr. J. Krishna Palemar who inspected the site today expressed dismay at the neglect of the important land mark in the city and a tank that had a historic value.
Later speaking to the presspersons Mr. Palemar said the government has ordered immediate work to be taken up by the district administration to restore the tank to its original position.
Following the order all the encroachments will be cleared within a week's time and excavation of tons of solid waste that has been dumped in the tank will begin thereafter. The government has also released a sum of Rs. 1.3 crores as per the estimation done last year and if need be the government will release more money. Even a contract has been awarded to this effect.
Mr. Palemar said due to silt and hyacinth weed the tank does not have any water now and many residential colonies that have come up around the tank have been discharging their sewerage into the tank which has in fact triggered the growth of hyacinth in the tank.
Originally the tank had 3.4 acres but now due to various encroachments the total area of the tank has been considerably reduced, but to ascertain the real extent of the tank a re-survey has been also ordered. If need be the Mangalore City Corporation will also fence the area so that no more encroachment takes place Mr. Palemar stated.
Mayor of Mangalore Mr. Shankar Bhat, Commissioner Dr. Vijayaprakash and others were present during the visit.

engineer.akash February 23rd, 2010, 06:03 PM Mayor exits on a high note
TNN, Feb 23, 2010, 10.02pm IST
MANGALORE: Mayor M Shankar Bhat, who is laying down office on Wednesday, has attributed achievements to a string of development works undertaken by Mangalore City Corporation in the last one-year as a `collective achievement'. A majority of these works were undertaken utilizing the special grants of Rs 100 crore released by the state government as well as resources from other sources, he noted.
Addressing the media after performing `Ganga Pooja' at Thumbe vented dam near here on Tuesday, Bhat said the progress achieved in ensuring regular water supply, completing around 80% of underground drainage work under the Asian Development Bank assisted Kudcem Project and road concretisation work has been largely satisfactory. "My successor will only take forward what we have collectively achieved," Bhat noted.
An important aspect of the UGD project, Bhat said is the signing of MoU with Mangalore SEZ Limited for the off take of 18 MGD of treated sewage from its Kavoor sewage treatment plant. "This treated water at present is flowing out into the sea," he said adding that MSEZ has come forward to utilize this water after ensuring further treatment at their end and supply it to industries coming up in the MSEZ in the near future, he noted.
The city corporation has completed concreting 34 main thoroughfares in the city measuring 32 km out of 36 km earmarked for concreting. MCC has utilized Rs 51.18 crore out of Rs 57 crore release by the state government for the purpose, he said adding that the focus in the days ahead would be on asphalting all interior roads. A sum of Rs 7 crore in the Rs 100 crore special grants given has been set-aside for it, he said.
The ability of MCC to convince people about accepting transfer of development rights (TDR) to compensation and litigation has been successful in its drive to widen key roads in the city. "The corporation has acquired 9 acres of land in the city for this purpose using the TDR route," he said adding that the corporation ended up paying a compensation of Rs 15 lakh in one case of land acquisition on K S Rao Road.

Akash ,Unlike Hubli or Dharwad the terrain in Mangalore escecially the Kavoor - Maravoor stretch is difficult. Once the road is completed they might think about it. Anyway you do not find any pedestrians here on this stretch generally but it is nice to have a pavement atleast on one side.I was expecting this question from you ,anyway.

hmmm but the setting of the road doesnt look appealing I can see a lot of bushes and at some places lot of empty spaces, sharp edges, dust.
I agree Ajay, terrain looks tough and am not complaining on that but lot of sharp edges and landscaping is a must with good pavements.

I want them to flatten those small hills at the sides and landscape the stretch along with some good pavementing of footpaths(compulsory),some nice yellow-black coat on the medians.
I simply love dust free roads, the biggest mood off for me is the dust along side the roads and incomplete footpaths.
I am happy that mangalore is seeing some good developments.

ajay ramchandran February 25th, 2010, 11:40 PM KSRTC likely to introduce buses to Manipal soon
http://www.hindu.com/2010/02/26/stories/2010022659950300.htm
Staff Correspondent
RTA says six long-chassis buses to Manipal will be permitted
No more buses to be permitted till 1993
court order is vacated
‘Samiti will move the court in this regard’
MANGALORE: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation is likely to soon be permitted by the Dakshina Kannada Regional Transport Authority to run six long-chassis buses between the State Bank of India (SBI) terminus and Manipal.
Chairman of the RTA V. Ponnuraj said this during the transport adalat here on Thursday.
He also said that the KSRTC had sought permission for operating buses on this route “the day before yesterday”.
Minibuses
In 2004, the KSRTC introduced six minibuses between the SBI bus-stand and Udupi after obtaining permission from the authority. However, the service was short-lived following a stay order obtained from the Karnataka High Court by the Canara Bus Owners’ Association and three others. The petitioners had based their writ on the 1993 order of the Dakshina Kannada District Magistrate.
The Magistrate, on April 6, 1993, ruled that no new permits could be issued to operate buses from the SBI bus-stand to any other destination as the SBI bus-stand was congested.
The KSRTC requested the court to vacate the stay order.
The court dismissed the writ petitions on September 8, 2008 and allowed the minibuses to ply.
A few days ago the KSRTC sought permission from the RTA to operate long-chassis buses between SBI bus-stand and Manipal as it had phased out its minibuses.
Mr. Ponnuraj, who is also the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate, said that it was up to the KSRTC to decide whether to operate Volvo buses or other regular buses.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the RTA was not in a position to issue new permits to the KSRTC or private operators to introduce buses to other destinations either from the SBI bus-stand or from other places such as Mangaladevi and Kankanady.
Hurdle
He said that as the 1993 order was still in force, permission to operate buses from the SBI bus-stand could not be given. In addition, the private bus operators here had moved the Karnataka High Court again last year, challenging the list of bus routes announced by the State Government.
The court subsequently stayed the list, he said. Mr. Ponnuraj said that people could approach the court and get the stay order vacated or ask the court to give necessary directions enabling the RTA to issue new permits.
In response to this, G. Hanumantha Kamath, president, Nagarika Hitarakshana Samiti, said that the samiti would move the court in this regard.
Mr. Ponnuraj directed Regional Transport Officer J. Purushotham to cancel the permits of he private buses which violated the schedule between the city and Ambalamogaru.A.S. Rao, Superintendent of Police, and P.B. Karumbaiah, Senior Divisional Controller, Mangalore Division of KSRTC, were present.

engineer.akash February 26th, 2010, 08:30 PM New pension system to be pilot tested in Mangalore, Hamirpur
The project team from the ADB and the Centre has designed promotional materials based on field-level testing and interactions with NPS stakeholders in these regions.
A.J. Vinayak
Mangalore, Feb. 25
Mangalore in Karnataka and Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh have been chosen for the pilot testing of strategies for the expansion of the Centre's New Pension System (NPS).
In an informal chat with Business Line on the sidelines of a roundtable workshop on preparing strategy for promoting NPS, Mr Ashish Aggarwal, Technical Expert from Asian Development Bank, Ministry of Finance Project Team, said the Centre is formulating strategies for the expansion of NPS at the national level by pilot testing the scheme in one urban and one rural district in the country. Mangalore has been chosen as the urban district and Hamirpur the rural district for the pilot testing.
Asked about the reasons for selecting Mangalore, he said the idea was to look at optimum conditions. Mangalore has many banks and fairly good literacy and income levels. The socio-economic profile of the region is also good.
Hamirpur district, which has a good road density and is home to a good number of ex-servicemen and farmers does not have as many banks.
The idea was also to focus on different cultures — one in the South and another in the North.
The project team from the ADB and the Centre has designed promotional materials based on field-level testing and interactions with NPS stakeholders in these regions. The Mangalore workshop would come out with a cohesive strategy that would be pilot tested in the coming weeks in Mangalore.
He said these pilot projects would pave the way for a national-level workshop at Delhi where the experiences of the pilot projects would be shared with the rest of the nation.
Mr Aggarwal said the NPS is pension where a person can invest during his/her working years and withdraw when he/she retires. Till May 1, 2009, it was only available to Central Government employees. It is now offered to all citizens of India. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority offers NPS to the public through 21 points of presence (PoP)/service providers.
He said that over seven lakh Government employees were already benefiting from the NPS, which generated an annual return of 12.37 per cent last year.
People from all economic strata can enrol in the NPS and can save based on their income and get a pension for life when they reach the age of 60 years. They can save as little as Rs 500 at a time and there is no maximum limit, he added.

India101 February 27th, 2010, 12:55 AM MANGALORE NEEDS A SUBFORUM! IF THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE AS SANJU HAD SUGGESTED WE NEED A SUBFORUM FOR THE TOP 5 CITIES OF THE SOUTH WHICH HAS THE GREATEST DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES GOING ON. AS FAR AS INFRASTRUCTURE IS CONCERNED MANGALORE LEADS THE PACK
I guess a Mangalore forum would be good. Mangalore as 20fl+ buildings under construction, many malls, lots of new roads u/c and would be about the same size as the Kochi forum.
But I don't think everybody's gonna want one.

engineer.akash February 27th, 2010, 03:36 PM Mlore: New schemes for Sportspersons
By Team Mangalorean
Mangalore, February 27, 2010: The State government will soon embark on a plan to improve the sports facilities in Dakshina Kannada in General and Mangalore city in particular according to the state minister for Sports and youth affairs minister Mr. Goolihatti Shekar.
Speaking to the reporters after he had a round of talks with the MLA of Mangalore Mr. N. Yogish Bhat and officials of the department Mr. Shekar said that Mangalore will get a new set of indoor games and outdoor sports kits for the sportsmen and women.
Mr. Shekar told that there were so many outstanding sportspersons in the district and in Mangalore city but they lacked facilities, due to which they could not attain state or national level in various sports. The state government was also thinking of laying a synthetic 400 meters track in Mangala stadium. The minister stated that he had discussed with the MLA, sports associations and officials and they have convinced him about their needs and he will put forward a proposal with the state government that will include all their needs as discussed with the officials and the MLA.
There was also a scheme to introduce few other prizes and awards for the sportspersons at the state level. He said presently the sportspersons from the state who have achieved national and international level not recognised and we need to have special recognition awards and prizes for those sportspersons he added.
Mr. Shekar who took a tour of the dilapidated Mangala stadium stated that the stadium needs to be repaired immediately and reserve the use of stadium only for sports uses. A few sportspersons and the members of their respective associations had complained that people were being allowed to use the cinder track for morning and evening walks which prevented the sportspersons from using it for the purpose it was meant for.
Mr. Shekar said he had seen an article in the Mangalorean.com about the misuse of the Mangala stadium and has directed his officials to take necessary action.
He said there were also plans to build another swimming pool for the Mangalore city. The Mangala stadium will also be given a face lift at a cost of Rs. 14 crores if the plan prepared by the local architects gets the approval of the government

That is the SAGAR RATHNA HOTEL. THANKS FOR THE PHOTO. Many years ago there was a mansion here. The owner of CPC the Kuduva family used to live here. Infact there was a slope and the house was at the bottom...much lower than the road level
The Navabharat circle is the area where lot of development happened during 1920-1960 period. Canara work shop, Canara School, Canara Bank, Canara Public Conveyance Co. Ltd. (CPC Co Ltd) all were in this area. Kudva was also founder director of Canara Industrial and Banking Syndicate Ltd (now Syndicate Bank). Now Canara work shop is becoming Maurishka Park, CPC/Navabharat becoming Sagar Ratna. Navabharat kannada daily had also actively participated in our independence struggle. Now even Navabharat circle is renamed as Rashtra Kavi Manjeshwara Govinda Pai circle. I had heard that there was a horse shed near PVS circle earlier.

Already the slabs of footpath near KPT junction is removed by truck drivers, they cook food near the petrol bunk after parking their vehicle there and use the drain below to drain out water from cooked rice by bending vessels.

ajay ramchandran February 27th, 2010, 05:21 PM where is pannambur??plz someone can answer this question??

Panambur was renamed as 'New Mangalore' in the seventees after the port came into existence. This is where MCF,KIOCL ,Elf gas etc are located. It is midway between Mangalore and Surathkal exactly 6 miles from Mangalore.(inthose days we used to talk in terms of miles!). This is the place where I studied till 10'th (Kendriya Vidyalaya,Central School ,KVM,NO. 1).NOW NEW MANGALORE starts from Kulur bridge and extends till Surathkal and includes Baikampady,Kulai,Hosabettu etc. I hope that is clear. Murthy will even draw a diagram.

CPC WERE PIONEERS IN TRANSPORT IN DK district. Their buses left on time ,not keen on racing, polite conductors and if you ever complained to the management of any irregularities they used to reply to you and take action. They had exclusively DODGE BUSES. MANGALORE WAS THE ONLY SERVICE CENTRE FOR DODGE EVEN TILL THE LATE 80'S.

visnaya February 27th, 2010, 05:58 PM Mahamaya Temple and Mahamaya temple road is located left side of Venkatramana Temple, car street. This road contains the Famous Mahamaya kerai or tank. All ganapathi, sharada etc all immerstion of ideal takes place in this tank. The temple and tank are starting part of the road. The pillar will come inside the tank. This road will be taken up for the widening now. this road is so narrow that only one truck can pass at time from one direction. So now MCC has taken this road for widening. this road extend till Navanharath circle near T.V Raman pai hall. I was surprised to see so many flats on this road ( so narrow road).

Krishnamoorthy K February 28th, 2010, 08:37 AM The Mangalore airport, a major non-metro airport in Karnataka, has made an operating profit of Rs 7.5 crore during 2008-09 as against the operating profit of Rs 8.61 crore for 2007-08 which was an indicator that the coastal region was now on a firm footing.
The airport, which recorded a loss of Rs 2.83 crore in 2005-06, made an operating profit of Rs 83 lakh in 2008-09 and I am sure the present day profit would be much more than that. He said "Malaysia-based Air Asia has shown interest to operate flights to Mangalore either from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur which will open the coastal areas to the orient.
The airport, which was handling around 2.5 lakh passengers a year a few years ago, is now handling more than 7.5 lakh passengers. Air passenger growth was an indicator of all round progress, Shetty said.
