* These stretches are presently maintained by the
* They have been identified for improvement

MANGALORE:The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to transfer the 130-km stretch between B.C. Road (near Mangalore) and Hassan on national highway 48 to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for improvement.

With this, the travails of travelling on the badly-maintained Shiradi Ghat between Hassan and Mangalore are expected to end.

In addition, the Ministry has also decided to transfer nine other stretches on other national highways in the State, including the188-km stretch between Shimoga and Mangalore on NH 13, to the NHAI for improvement, official sources told The Hinduhere.

All these stretches are presently maintained by the State Government through the State's National Highway Division under the Public Works Department.

All these stretches now “are being transferred to the NHAI for taking further necessary action,'' the sources said. The Ministry has written to the NHAI to this effect on March 16, 2010, sources said.

All the 10 stretches have been identified for improvement under the Phase IV A and Phase IV B of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP). Of these two phases, the Union Government is yet to approve the Phase IV B, they said.

Sources said that the stretch between Shimoga and Mangalore on NH 13 has been identified for improvement first, under Phase IV A. Except this, all other stretches have been identified for improvement under Phase IV B, they said.

The other stretches “being transferred” for improvement and which will come under Phase IV B are: Chitradurga and Hospet (119 km); Hospet and Bellary (73 km); Bellary and Gooty (77 km); Hospet-Hubli-Ankola (271 km); Gundlupet-Coimbatore (Kerala border) (26 km); Hoskote-Dabaspet (89 km); Tamil Nadu border-Bangalore (204 km) and Gulbarga-Bijapur-Humnabad (200 km).

The major beneficiaries of this decision will be the people of Mangalore. This is because all the three national highways — NH 48, NH 17 and NH 13 — connecting Mangalore will come under the NHAI. When improved (likely to be made four lanes) these roads will strengthen the connectivity between the port city and hinterlands of the State and boost economic activities, sources said.

The NHAI is developing the stretch between Surathkal and B.C. Road covering NH 17 and NH 13 into four lanes. In addition, it has already selected the bidder for widening the stretch between Surathkal and Kundapur on NH 17 and the stretch between Nanthoor and Talapady on NH 17 into four-lane road and the land acquisition has begun.

MANGALORE: Sixteen months have passed since the Mangalore University sent a proposal to the ministry of tourism and culture seeking special grants of Rs 2 crore, to renovate three heritage value structures of the university college. Till date there has been no positive reply from the Centre.

The 144-year-old university college has three buildings which have heritage value in terms of architecture as well as age. The Mangalore University wants to protect these monuments and at the same time use them for academic as well as administrative purposes.

The most prized block is Academy Hall, which was christened as Ravindra Kala Bhavan after Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore visited the college in 1922. The administrative block is also connected to Kala Bhavan and houses the principal's chamber. The third building is the commerce block, a separate building originally built as a Sanskrit school.

Of these three buildings, the commerce block needs urgent repairs lest it becomes unusable during monsoons due to broken tiles and damaged wooden rafters. The other two structures too need repair but not as urgent as the commerce block.

College principal Laxminarayana Bhatta said the monsoon will definitely pose a problem to conduct classes due to leaks, especially in commerce block. "But even for the other blocks, leaks cannot be ruled out," he added.

Eminent alumnus of the college, Union law minister M Veerappa Moily told TOI that he will press for allocation of funds under some scheme of the Centre so that it could be restored and be used by the college.

The original proposal for Rs 2 crore was sent by the then university vice-chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa in December 2008, to the then minister of tourism Ambika Soni. It was followed by Moily's request to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in August 2009.

Sources said though the buildings were of heritage value, authorities did not want heritage tag to be accorded or grants sought from heritage scheme which would bring these buildings under the purview of the department of archaeology, which may restrict development activities inside the campus.

In January this year, personnel from the department of archeology had visited the campus. They had seen the need for repairs to the three buildings, especially the rooftops. Recently, NIT-K Surathkal in its report had said the structures were solid and could be used for at least another 25 years.

Higher cost of tie-up with private firm pushes PSU into fellow PSU’s arms

KIOCL Ltd, a 100 per cent export-oriented unit under the ministry of steel and mines, has dropped plans to go with a private firm for setting up a Rs 330 crore ductile iron spun pipe (DISP) plant in Mangalore as part of its diversification programme.

The company, instead, has decided to form a 50:50 joint venture with the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the flagship company of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant to set up the plant in Mangalore with a capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum.

“We have dropped the plans to go with the private firm due to the higher cost, and also with the thought of roping in another PSU. Meanwhile, RINL has shown interest in joining us for the project. We have already discussed about this with the CMD of RINL and he has agreed to a JV. The boards of both companies will meet shortly and approve the JV formally,” K Ranganath, chairman-cum-managing director, KIOCL said.

KIOCL plans to build the DISP plant adjacent its existing pig iron plant in Mangalore on the west coast. The proposed plant will utilise the superior pig iron with low phosphorus and low sulphur, already produced by the company.

KIOCL had floated global tenders for this project twice in the last two years and both the occasions, Larsen & Toubro had emerged as the L1 bidder. But last week the KIOCL decided to drop the plan of going with the private player to build the DISP plant, he said.

“The main reason for dropping the earlier plan was purely on the grounds of high cost involved in it. At this juncture, when we don’t have captive iron ore mines, we did not want to invest a higher amount. The proposed JV requires us to invest only Rs 150-175 crore as equity and works out better for us,” Ranganath told Business Standard.

He said the company would form a separate company to take up the project with RINL. Apart from selling the ductile iron spun pipes in the domestic market, the JV company will also export to European countries as there is a big demand for it. “We already have a captive jetty at New Mangalore Port and it will be cost-effective for us to export our products,” he said.

L&T had quoted around Rs 330 crore for the ductile iron spun pipe plant. The KIOCL board will meet early next week to approve the proposal formally, he said.

KIOCL, as of March 31, 2009, had a cash reserve of Rs 1,468 crore.

Ductile iron spun pipes are used in advanced and developing countries because of its superiority over cast iron spun pipes. Even in India, there is a huge demand for spun pipes from various state governments, urban development bodies. They are used in irrigation projects, drinking water supply and sewerage projects and other large infrastructure projects.

This is the most soughted news for mangalore. One of the big hinderance for D.K is the NH are in bad shape. This should solve the problem. Also it is good news for Karnataka as well since many roads are taken for development.

I had posted some time back the plan of the Mr.Kamalnath Minister for highway to build NH at a target of 20Km/day. This shall transform all NH in india and push GDP.

If this is truely implemented mangalore-udupi region becomes unstoppable

Any Idea when this will be implemented

The road mentioned by Krishnamoorty starting from north gate of NMPT is fairly continuous. A bridge (rather a culvert) built about 5 years ago in Baikampady over a stream is very narrow, allowing only one vehicle movement at a time. From here the road is fairly complete till the Sadashiv temple (source of the name Surathkal). There is no road beyond this temple as the area is not inhabited and beyond this, area belongs to NIT-K. Road again starts in Mitrapattna (Mukka) all the way to Shambhavi river. The pic posted by AVI is from the Mukka - Shambhavi river stretch.

Industry:
3. Exapnsion of Infy Mudupu campus - I have heard the head count has started growing(good news)

Yes, the head count has started increasing. There are 2 Software Development Blocks which are complete and an Employee Care Center building U/C. One of the SDB is not full yet. So it might take some time for further expansion....

4. More ITFirm maninly Big 5 company start their campus and announce the plans in mangalore ( TCS, Wipro, Mahindra -satyum, cognesent, Accenture, Oreacal, L&T infotech, Poloris( laser soft) etc) - No news

Yes, there is no news from any other IT biggies yet.

5. Expansion of Private unitversity( manipal, nitte, yenapoya) ( I have heard they pay really well) ( Canara university, srinivas university ... possible???) --No News

Canara Association has completed a building for the new CBSE school in Kodialbail few months back (http://www.mangaloremithr.com/news/story.aspx?News-ID=6354). Not sure if they are in expansion mode now...

Food processing:
2. Cashew industry ( should do well) No news

Cashew is a highly unpredictable business...Also with the shortage of labour they are finding it tough to expand. Infact that is the common worry for all industrialists i have spoken to in Mangalore...Getting skilled labour is a tough ask these days...

MANGALORE: The road leading to Panambur beach from the National Highway 17 will be concreted by the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) from its corporate social responsibility funds.

NMPT Chairman P. Tamilvanan told presspersons here on Wednesday that the project estimation was under way and details would be available in a month's time. He said, the NMPT had already laid the road with footpath. Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj had suggested to the NMPT to concrete the Panambur beach road, he said.

The Tannirbhavi Road passing by the port, already concreted by the port trust, was inaugurated last year.

The port was continuously spraying water within and outside the port to prevent pollution from iron ore fines. About 1,200 trees were planted in the port area during 2009-10.

A separate pollution control cell, headed by a marine engineer, had been put in place and the port was trying to get ISO 14001 certification for its environment management activities, he said.

He said the port had installed traffic signal lights at Panambur Circle at a cost of Rs. 8.62 lakh. The Port conducted a free medical camp in which about 300 patients suffering from various diseases were given free medicines in 2009-10.

The port had taken up total computerisation to increase efficiency.

Here is another version.

MANGALORE: Though Dakshina Kannada district has various locales of tourist interest, it has been unable to package it effectively, said DK deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj here on Friday.

He was taking part in an interaction programme on Tourism Development in DK organized by Mangalore Association of Travel Agents (Mata), with stakeholders to understand the problems faced by the industry and measures to be taken to solve the problems here.

When the stakeholders pointed out to Kerala which has managed to market its tourism potential lucratively, Ponnuraj said there was a need to learn from Kerala, but not imitate them. Travel agents, tour organizers poured out their woes about lack of infrastructure, lack of awareness among the public, lack of cleanliness and facilities for foreigners who arrived by cruise.

A direct tourist link to Lakshadweep, possibility of yacht tourism to Murdeshwar, Gokarna; was also discussed.

Tour operators also expressed their displeasure over the tax policy which was three times higher than the neighbouring states.

The meeting decided to form six committees __ ecotourism; wellness and medical tourism; cultural and pilgrimage tourism; beach tourism; cuisine tourism and tourism marketing committee.

The committee will have a maximum of 10 members, meet regularly and each committee will be headed by a person with considerable knowledge about that industry.

Ponnuraj also said there were plans to convert a street lined by old houses at Moodabidri into Heritage Street, by compensating people adequately. A ambitious four lane-project is also on the drawing board connecting all major pilgrimage centres in DK, said the DC.

* CII and Transport Department to enforce voluntary code of conduct

MANGALORE: Clearing apprehensions voiced by officials, Minister for Fisheries Anand Asnotikar on Friday said that the Government would buy a dredge to remove sand from fishing harbours. The sand accumulated over the years is proving to be a hindrance to fishing boats.

He told presspersons here that the Government would, after buying the dredge, appoint a private agency to operate it for a fee.

The Government would seek Central assistance in purchasing the dredge after preparing a detailed report on the cost and operational expenses. The Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) would be asked to purchase it, he said.

Earlier, during a meeting with KFDC and Fisheries Department officials, KFDC Managing Director V.K. Shetty and Joint Director of the department Gangadhar V. Maddikeri expressed reservations about the proposal.

Mr. Shetty said that dredging was the responsibility of the Ports Department. Mr. Maddikeri said the Centre had a scheme that provided 75 per cent of the cost of dredging. He said this scheme could be made use of instead of purchasing a dredge. Maintenance of the equipment would become a problem, he said and it would prove to be a proverbial white elephant.

Mr. Maddikeri suggested that the Government could set aside Rs. 5 crore a year for dredging and invite global tenders.Mr. Asnotikar said ports in Mangalore and Honnavar would be developed at a cost of Rs. 65 crore each, and the one in Malpe at a cost of Rs. 53 crore.

It is sad .Tourism infrastructure is bad in DK and there is lack of publicity. Not surprisingly tourists from UK go to Go and then go to Kerala. They are not aware of Mangalore at all. In the Southdhall travels website there is no mention of Mangalore airports amongst its Indian airport lists. There are smaller airports. I wrote to them but it has not been rectified. Many tourists from UK come for relaxation, massage, herbal treatment etc. They usually prefer hotels of reputed brands.

DK has tremendous tourism potential but very poor marketing. This has been a topic that has been debated year and year for decades. Articles have come in papers ,politicians announce projects year after year but then nothing much has progressed. The govt cannot do much but private players should be roped in.The govt now has promised some things like aquarium, ropeway project etc but these will take years .Private players have played an important role in Goa's and Kerala's tourism. There are some resorts coming up in SouthKanara but no one knows about them.Kerala and Goa govt have given good publicity for their respective tourism and improved infrastructure the most important being good Hotels. Most western tourists come for relaxation and not for adventure sports as they are highly popular, and safe in western countries. In GOA they come just to lie on the beach and in Kerala they get massage. Sadly they bypass the beautiful Coastal Karnataka.Karnataka govt should start publicity campaigns for a seperate unique coastal tourism . Tourists also like heritage sites. Usually western tourists are categorised in two categories ...the working class prefer beaches and the middle class prefer heritage tourism. Tourism here in the UK is very much class based. The working class like Plumbers,(in the UK they equate themselves to engineers which I find a bit wierd),builders, drivers etc prefer beaches but the middle class like doctors, lawyers prefer to visit historical sites,go for walks etc..Domestic tourism ,within India is also very important as they form a bulk .In india nowadays I am told people travel a lot .So it is very important to attract tourists from other part of the country. These groups many of them would involve youngsters would like to do adventure sports etc.

Pilikula should receive all publicity and it is very impotant to improve road connectivity. similarly the older age grpups prefer temples ,so temple tourism with good road /railconnectivity to places connecting Mangalore to Udupi,Kollur,Dharmasthala and Subramanya would be helpful. Last time when I visited Dhrmasthala I was disappointed by the toilet facilities. It was pathetic. Why cannot they have private toilet facilities ,paid toilets like sabarimala? Tirupathi is another example.

Sorry I have written in a hurry and missed many points.

Ajay,

I appreciate your concerns. However, on the other hand too much of exposure to the Tourism has its own ill effects also. Goa has become paradise for Drug dealers. Local culture is on the verge of collapsing in Goa. Kerala is also following Goa.

However this does not mean that we should not encourage tourism. At the same time it is also better to be cautious as well.:)

Ananda ,for everything you do there are plus and minus points. If we do not want industries then we need something to keep the economy going. Otherwise economy of the city will become static.we need to generate employment so that all sections of the socoety prosper . Otherwise the gap between the rich and poor will ever increase .

Similarly when NHAI has put aside money for widening the road to 60 metres. 45 metres is inadequate considering the percentage of increase in rise of traffic on our highways. If we settle for 45 metres then in 5 years time that will get clogged as well.In India I notice that 45 metres is not enough because they invariably narrow near towns due to parking of vehicles. So you really never get the full benefit.

I agree with Akash. Kerala is as conservative as ever when compared to other states. I do not think western people have spoilt its culture.I do not think they have spoilt Goa as well. The problem of drinking, smoking, drugs etc is there all over India and has been there for years . I ACTUALLY blame BOLLYWOOD!

Can we list down what required for 6 area they have menstioned to develop Toursim;

Lets take one by one...

1.Temple tourism: DK and Udupi is already known for its different types of temples. The most important thing is to improve lodging facilities in places like Kollur Subramanya and Dharmasthala. Mangalore and Udupi have good infrastructure. Bus /train connectivity to the centres.Road infrastructure to be improved.I would put give it first preference.Karkala ,Moodabidri to be included in this.

2. Beach tourism:Again we have to balance accordingly. Not to allow ramapnt commercialisation as Ananda has rightly said. Identify few sites and develop those fully taking into consideration CRZ regulations.St Marys island is an excellent tourist spot but most people do not know about it.
3. Atleast one of the non functional traditional industries ,beedi, tile could be converted into heritage site. The govt has to do it and collect a fee for mainainence.
I am running out of Ideas?

Sailing/adventure sports isa big untapped field where private players could be rope in. It is still in its infancy but has to develop with additional emphasis on safety. IPL like competitions as Moorthy has mentioned will have to wait. The Kite festival has become very popular. Why not an international kite festival week?

SET UP WELL MANANED TOURISM KIOSKS AT RAILWAY STATION,BUS TERMINUS AND AIRPORT. THEY SHOULD HAVE INFORMATION BOOKLET OF THE VARIOUS TOURIST ATTRACTIONS ,TRANSPORT FACILITITIES,HOTELS.BOOKLETS IN KANNADA,ENGLISH AND HINDI.

At Mangalre Central and junction they should install boards at different parst of the station which says please alight here for...ex pilikula,International Airport. Similarly at Udupi ...please alight here to visit Krishmna temple,St Marys, Manipal or something on those lines.

The road from Mangalore junction till NH48 has to be widened on a priority basis. They could utilise part of the 100 crores for this. First impression is the best impression.

The new Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) for Mangalore is only in the interest of the developers, said Opposition leader in the Assembly Siddaramaiah.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he said since District-in-Charge Minister J Krishna Palemar himself is a real estate entrepreneur, the CDP has been designed in the interests of developers’ fraternity.

“There are a lot of complaints that those from poor and middle class with 2-3 cents of land in the Corporation limits cannot build their own houses due to the guidelines in the new masterplan. While introducing a new plan, the government should always be pro-poor but not for the vested interests,” he said.

Pending bills

Siddaramaiah said the State government boasts of an overflowing treasury but crores of rupees bills are pending with various departments. “The PWD owes Rs 1,200 crore in Bangalore alone and Rs 1,096 crore in other parts of the State. But the money allocated to the PWD in the new fiscal is only Rs 900 crore,” he said.

“The CM always says there is no dearth of funds with the government. If it is true, why such large amount of bills are pending?” the Opposition leader questioned.

‘Political renunciation’

The State government has borrowed Rs 1,400 crore loans from the commercial banks and has got Rs 22,554 crore from the Central government under the JNNURM for Bangalore’s development. The BJP government has not spent a single rupee from its own pocket for Bangalore’s development, Siddaramaiah said.

“If the government proves that it has spent its own money for the development projects in Bangalore, I will forsake politics,” he challenged. He also said the government has not spent any amount towards building houses in the flood affected areas. “Whatever money spent and houses built, that are all the contributions of donors like Amritanandamayi,” he noted, adding that the government has not spent the money from the Centre and the donors so far.

“The government tries to identify itself as ‘pro-minority’ by showing huge allocations to the minorities, SC/STs and backward classes, but it never happened in reality. It had earmarked Rs 207 crore for minorities in the 2009-10 budget, but the released amount is only Rs 43 crore,” he said. District Congress President and MLA B Ramanath Rai, MLAs U T Khader, Abhaychandra Jain, former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake among others were present at the press meet.

I thought that the rules are common all over Karnataka atleast if not India. Whether in 2-3 cents of land one can build a house in anywhere else in Karnataka like Mysuru, Hubballi?

Here is the old one on CDP from Mangalorean

Mangalore: MUDA-MCC at loggerheads- CDP under microscope again (http://mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=broadcast&broadcastid=168504)

MANGALORE, February 9, 2010: The new master plan for city development unveiled by Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has put the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) in a spot. The Corporation thinks the Master plan is not practicable while MUDA says "Master plan was final and it becomes MCC’s responsibility to implement it in next two years".

This coastal city had seen wide ranging building code violations in the past mainly due to a faulty series of Comprehensive Development Plans, but the latest Master Plan for development of the city unveiled by the Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) hopes to shut the city for all illegal constructions in the future. "But all that will not happen now" official says "I am sure the real estate and construction lobby will have tough time in complying with the recommendations of the new master plan. No hanky panky business anymore when it comes to sticking to the NBC and the fire department rules"

But the Mayor of Mangalore Shankar Bhat does not share that view "The city was just getting over a great slump in the real estate and construction industry for the last six years and things have started looking up for it since the beginning of this year. Big builders from Mumbai and Bangalore have started expanding into Mangalore which is seen as the next engine of growth for Karnataka. Mohtisham of Mumbai, Prestige, Nitesh and Sobha have considerable presence in the city already. One of the largest condominium of high rise apartment buildings was being promoted by a joint venture between Sobha and Prestige group of Bangalore at Derebail. There are many builders who are coming with big money into Mangalore, at this juncture Mangalore city cannot have lax rules as before, and it is time that operators are given enough leeway to protect their investment interests"

Mangalore’s construction industry had been enjoying a free run since 1990 when the real estate business opened up for real big time operators, but at the same time, absence of Master Plan had rendered the regulator -Mangalore City Corporation a ‘paper tiger’. Space earmarked for car parking in high rise building were converted into shopping areas, the builders had shown scant respect for the National Building Code (NBC), Even the most stringent Fire department rules were not adhered. The building lobby was so powerful politically and financially, they could break every rule in the book and get away with that. As a result 47 high rise buildings in Mangalore city have been stamped ‘unsafe and illegal tag’ by the Urban Development Department.

In addition to that two major fire accidents in the high rise buildings in last 18 months has opened all multi storey buildings for scrutiny by fire department and according to the statistics available with the Fire department over 50 per cent of them fire hazard prone.

Outlining the measures to reign in the building and construction lobby mentioned in the new Master plan, Mr. P.G Ramesh Commissioner of MUDA told Mangalorean.com that "Out of 30,600 hectares available under Mangalore local planning area, 20,700.30 hectares has been earmarked for the total urbanization process. Of this, 11,317.59 hectares (46.66 %) has been set aside for residential purpose, 892.97 hectares for commercial (3.68%), 2,790.11 hectares industrial (11.51%), public and semi-public purpose 1,047.64 hectares (4.32 %), parks 2,005.74 hectares (8.27%), transport 2,629.48 hectares (10.84%), an 45.80 hectares for public use (0.19 %)."

As per government order dated September 10, 2009, ratifying the master plan, buildings exceeding 18-metres in height will be considered high-rise buildings. The minimum width of roads leading to such buildings will be nine metre, with a provision to extend it to 12 metre or more if the circumstances so warrant. Permission will be accorded only to such high-rise buildings that meet this criterion.

"We are not here to make any haphazard construction plans or build, we are serious in our business, we want Mangalore to look beautiful, congenial and a well planned city, you should see our properties in Bangalore" said a top official of the Sobha -Prestige project of Derebail. "We have made our intentions clear to both Mayor and the Chairman and our block which is coming up in the city has 2020 standards"

But Mumbai based builders who have large plots in Mangalore, most of them within the city limits have a bone to chew with both MUDA and MCC. "We have sunk over Rs. 500 crores into Mangalore on plots for the last two years based on the Comprehensive Development Plans of the city, now they say they have a new master plan which might eat up considerable project space from our plots, reducing our profit margins" says Sharad Rao Marathe agent of several real estate firms of Mumbai. "I have already alerted my principals in Mumbai, Pune and Gulf and I have been told to ‘look for deals out of the city"

An official in the Urban Development Ministry says "Mangalore has had no viable plan in the past and the latest one appears to have some sense of planned development, we have held back the plan for over 17 months and allowed the MUDA to make changes and amendments to the last day before the process of approval had begun. Our urban development experts felt that the master plan was good for a starter."

Chairman of the Mangalore chapter of Confederation of Real Estate and Developers Associations of India (CREDAI) Mr. K.C. Nayak told Mangalorean.com that "there would be no compromise on the safety and beauty of the buildings in Mangalore and from the Confederation also we are sure to send a flyer to all our members to co-operate in putting the new master plan into action"

Total investment expected to come into Mangalore in real estate and construction during 2009-2012 was Rs. 2000 crores. City will expand towards NH 17 Udupi-Kerala, NH 48 B.C Road, and NH 13 towards Moodbidri.

As Murthy said, these pics are 2 years old....The 2 buildings are complete now(1600 capacity each). There is another one (500 room Employee care center) U/c....The campus is spread across 310+ acres...and the eventual plan is to accommodate 25K employees during full capacity...Now that the economy is improving....we can hope more buildings are on the way in the coming years.......

Max Hypermarkets will open 6-7 stores each year till 2012. While most of the stores will be in tier-2 cities in south India, such as Mangalore, Mysore, Vishakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Coimbatore, the company will also be opening large stores in cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and New Delhi.

In many new malls opening in these cities, Max has signed on as an anchor client. “Being a hypermarket, we are naturally an anchor client for malls,” Mr Singh said, adding that his company works on a revenue sharing basis with mall owners. “It varies obviously, but on an average, the cost of occupancy works out to be 3-4% of revenues,” Mr Singh said. Rent and salaries are typically the largest cost overheads for retail operations

What would be the parking capacity needed? Around 5000 to 10000 vehicles in case of a league match assuming stadium capacity of 50000 spectators?

The place is close to NH-17 and proposed Mangala Corniche. It will be a waterfront stadium.

I suggest stadium should be named after googly spinner Bhagawat Chandrashekar as he is connected to the region.

Director of the Karnataka State Cricket Academy Syed Kirmani said here on Wednesday that they were looking for 25 acres of land in Mangalore to build a cricket stadium of international standards.

The academy functions under the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

He told presspersons that the academy was planning to set up its office in the stadium and impart cricket coaching.

Mr. Kirmani said that he met Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj on Wednesday and placed the demand for the land.

He said that the academy, set up five years ago, had remained non-functional so far. The academy was revived a month ago and it would take up activities aimed at promoting cricket, mainly coaching, in the six zones of the association.

Asked why the academy had remained non-functional all these years, he said: “I don’t know the reasons for it.”

The former India wicket-keeper said that under-14 cricket coaching camp had begun simultaneously in the six zones of the association, including Mangalore, on Tuesday. Coaching camps would be held for players of other age groups from the next season. The academy would train promising cricketers from each zone at an advanced camp to be held in Bangalore soon, Mr. Kirmani said.

Karthik Jeswanth, one of the chief coaches of the academy, said that the academy had been revived for ensuring uniformity in cricket coaching in the State. It would also organise training programmes for coaches, with assistance from the National Cricket Academy and prominent cricketers in Bangalore, he said.

Manohar Amin, convener of the Mangalore zone of the association, said that selection camps for under-14 players were held at Madikeri, Udupi and Kundapur this year.

Avi ,you have made my day.

We used to frequent sadanand bar ,Nataraj theatre . I used to visit Costa Bakery,Anjaneya stores next to it and a book shop next to Nataraj which I think was demolished and was shifted?Ganesh

I can see the end of a flyover.. the unfinished part.. Is it the Udupi side or Mangalore side . IS ANY ONE SIDE FINISHED. I have been told that some one has opposed the construction . If that is true then it is not acceptable because in the interest of the public the work has to be completed.

This is why I sometimes prefer the Chinese policy...sorry.

* Land being acquired for widening Kundapur-Talapady road

MANGALORE: The Government has completed the process of issuing preliminary notification for acquiring properties in 63 villages in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts for the Kundapur-Talapady four-lane highway project, according to official sources.

The notification is yet to be published for acquisition in one village in Udupi district, they said.

However, the final notification has been issued in only six villages, located between Mulky and Surathkal in Dakshina Kannada. As a result, there is a delay in beginning work on the project, sources said.

The NHAI last year adopted a policy of not taking up any project before the State Government completes the issuance of final notification to 80 per cent of properties to be taken over. It also expects the State Government to complete the preliminary notification process for the remaining 20 per cent of properties, the sources said.

A new bridge, parallel to the existing one, will come up across the Netravati on National Highway 17 at Jeppinamogaru under the project. It will be 804 m long and 13.1 m wide. “Soil exploration for constructing the bridge has begun,” sources said.

An official at the Mangalore Division of the State National Highways (a wing of the Public Works Department) said that the existing bridge across the river was constructed in 1965.

Project

The four-lane project being taken up by the NHAI is estimated to cost Rs. 674 crore. It will be taken up under Phase 3 of the National Highways Development Project on build, operate and transfer basis. The Navayuga-KPCL consortium, a Hyderabad-based company, has bagged the contract.According to it, the 90-km stretch between Kundapur and Surathkal and Nanthoor and Talapady on the NH 17 will be widened.

Sources said that the NHAI and the Navayuga-KPCL consortium had set up Navayuga Udupi Tollway Pvt Ltd., a special purpose vehicle for implementing the project.

* ‘Infrastructure facilities are good here'

MANGALORE: Principal Secretary of the State Department of Transport M.K. Shankaralinge Gowda has called upon tourism promoters in Dakshina Kannada to have a brand ambassador to attract tourists to the region.

Speaking after inaugurating the Mangalore Association of Travel Agents here on Friday he said that a person hailing from the district and who is known in the country for excellence in any field could be roped in to become the brand ambassador. “There are many persons from this region who have earned names at the national level in different sectors, including cinema. One of them can become the brand ambassador,” he said. Mr. Gowda suggested the association members to organise tourism fairs and other events here to market the region and invite the brand ambassador to such events to showcase the tourism potential of the region.

A handbook of hotels with all basic information about the region should be prepared for the tourists. The association should join hands with Karnataka Tourists and Travel Federation to draw tourists to the region, he said.

He said that the infrastructure facilities in the district were at a satisfactory level. The need of the hour was to market the region's tourism potential, he said. Deputy Director (administration) of the State Tourism Department K.S. Shivalingappa spoke.

Bangalore: Malls may make people nervous in Bangalore, but they are certainly making people happy in Mangalore. That’s because the supply chains in Bangalore’s malls crisscross farmlands surrounding Mangalore and those beyond it. As Bangalore’s appetite gorges on demand, the supply chains bloat, sucking up farm-fresh produce from fertile Mangalore.

Take Matti village, which shoulders National Highway 17. Farming, which had been starved of demand, is humming now. Says Ramesh Shetty, who’s preparing a fresh patch of matti gulla (aromatic brinjal native to the village): “We need to grow more matti gulla to send it to Bangalore.”

The mall effect is visible in Neerumarga, Mangalore taluk, as well. Basale (a leafy vegetable found in Dakshina Kannada) is a big draw. Assured of profit, farmers are adopting scientific methods to ensure a healthy crop. Says farmer Lilly Pinto: “I am expecting a Bangalore party to pick up the vegetable in a couple of days. They have told me that I can harvest only after they give me the green signal.”

Such green signals from Bangalore are changing the fortunes of farmers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Southadka village, famous for southe (cucumber), has increased its cultivation by four times. Buntwal’s alasande (beans), Puttur’s gherkins, other vegetables, and berries, fruits from Sullia, Belthangady and Karkala have become hot sells.

Here’s a glimpse of the local exotica you’ll find on Bangalore’s mall menu: pagile (wild bitter gourd), mara kesu (herb), nela kesu (herb) and marsan gedde (aphrodisiac). Amir Ahmed, a bulk supplier says: “Bangaloreans are going gaga over local vegetables from the coast. I have put a number of these items on the shelves of Hyper City Mall in Whitefield.”

It’s not just one of those fads; people in general have become more health conscious. “Bangaloreans are going vegetarian; they seem to like the taste and the aroma of vegetables from the coastal region. And since these vegetables are grown in a pollution-free air and soil, it does have a enhanced taste,” says Ahmed.

So much is the interest in green organics that malls are now deploying agents to Mangalore, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts to source their requirements on time. Tender cashew kernel, a key cooking input, has now snugly fit into the supplier network. Radha Kamath, who runs the Stree Shakti Group in Honnavar, is now primarily focussing on supplying farm produce. Due to this, it is quite obvious that markets in Mangalore and Udupi are facing a shortage of cashew kernels. Says Radha: “The food procurersgive us a good price. In the local market we do not get more than Rs70 per 100 raw cashew kernels; the food-procurersgive us anything between Rs100 to Rs120.”

Forget veggies, malls are also netting dry fish from Mangalore and Udupi. Moving fast off Bangalore’s shelves are dry fish fillets and prawns. Niyaz Ahmed, of Gujarat Fish Packers and Exporters says: “I don’t have to export dry fish anymore, I’m selling it at export rates right here in Bangalore”

But does this new practicewith the buyer in Bangalore and the seller at Mangalore or elsewhere in costal Karnataka, make good business sense in the long run?

Paul Zakaria, a food procurer says, “We are trying to educate and train farmers in Hassan, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Kodagu, Mysore, Chamarajanagar and Bidar to increase their produce, and grow better-quality vegetables and fruits. We are now looking at locally-grown tomatoes, potatoes, drumsticks, ridge gourds, radish and carrots, too.”

Moreover, a lot more produce is on its way to Bangalore. And as the demand increases further at Bangalore’s malls, this supply chain will be streamlined, it will become more cost-effective and wastage will be trimmed.

DNA (http://www.dnaindia.com/bangalore/report_hungry-for-coastal-exotica_1370338)

This is the reason why local vegetable prices are going up in Mangalore. If they start exporting vegetables to say gulf countries then prices may soar further. Good that farmers in Hassan, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Kodagu, Mysore, Chamarajanagar and Bidar are also planning to grow these varieties.

This is a good news, because our farmers gets good money. This will reduce migration, this will give money to rural places and villages. I am very about this.

This also shows that why we need a powerfull city like bangalore in our state. If you look at maharastra the most of the maharastra city are economically sound. it is not that the people are very business and education oriented. But they have power generator ( economy) mumbai which absorb all their agriculture produce for good price. so locally they get the large market.

Visnaya you are right Mahrashtra cities are the most sound cities in all aspects, education, urbanisation, culture etc etc....We need to learn from them.

Akash,

I am living in Maharashtra from past 3 years. No doubt these cities were trend setter once upon a time, now they are no more trend setters. They have their own problems.

Major problem I have seen among these cities is sanitation. Public sanitation is poor in big cities too. People decorate the walls of buildings and stair cases with "Pan" or "Gutka" reminders.

More cities are surrounded by villages, public transportation is still not up to the mark (Barring Mumbai and Pune).

Bullock Carts are the major hurdles for traffic in many cities.

Power cut has become common challenge to urban folks.

The only advantage they have is their closeness to the Countries commercial capital. Due to this they prosper.

Many tier-II cities in Maharashtra do not have proper urban planning which has been prepared keeping the future growth in mind.

Anyways, the story has become like "Baruta .. baruta.. Rayara Kudure Katte Aaitu". Despite problem plenty, I love Maharashtra. JAI MAHARASHTRA

Mangalore mania the key is with the mangaloreans if they embrace KSRTC services and support its every move then there is no one to stop KSRTC going ahead with its plans in DK and UK.

Its all left to the people to respond positively to KSRTC's services.KSRTC infrastructure in DK is still in the nascent state. For it to flourish it needs the support of the public.

Going by the success of Volvo services it looks like KSRTC has got a shot in the arm to go ahead with its ambitious plans in UK and DK.

* Meeting held to take stock of the situation
* Minister says another 160 borewells will soon be sunk in the district
* Additional grant of Rs. 2 crore to be sought to mitigate the problem

MANGALORE: Zilla panchayat members said on Tuesday that many areas in Dakshina Kannada are reeling under severe drinking water shortage. In some places, people had to travel up to 2 km to fetch water, they said.

They were participating in a meeting to review the drinking water situation and find ways to mitigate the problem.

The people in some areas were vying with one another to have a share of water. Many schools, were deprived of drinking water. The administration had not done anything to address the problem. According to the members, Ullal, Kotekar, Konaje, Amlamogaru, Sasihitlu, Pavanje, Balila, Nashiya, Nadupadavu, and Mudipu are the worst hit places.

A panchayat member said that in Mudipu, a hand pump had not been installed at a borewell sunk about 15 days ago. In another case, water was not being supplied even after a fortnight of giving the connection.

District in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar, who presided over the meeting, said that the administration would immediately sink about 160 borewells.

Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj said that in areas where it was not possible to sink borewells or ensure regular supply through other means, steps should be taken to supply water through tankers. Stating that the special grant of Rs. 1.7 crore was not enough to address the problem, the Minister said that he would try to secure an additional grant of Rs. 2 crore for the district. “There are 3,625 habitations in 268 gram panchayats of the district.” There were complaints from many areas about shortage of drinking water, he said. Earlier, officials from different taluks said that people in 320 of the 1,032 localities in Mangalore were facing water scarcity. Similarly, 118 of the 675 localities in Bantwal taluk, 27 of 47 villages in Puttur, 34 of the 294 habitations in Sullia, and 64 of the 80 villages in Belthangady taluk were facing water shortage, they said. They said that the water in many borewells was not fit for consumption and needed immediate repair. The Deputy Commissioner asked the officials to act quickly and not to tolerate any failure on the part of borewell contractors.

The Hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2010/04/14/stories/2010041463580300.htm)

More borwells mean faster depletion of ground water. Logterm measures have to be taken to recharge ground water. What is the status on revival of disappearing waterbodies - tanks & lakes?

Mangalore: Foundation Stone Laid for International Sports Complex in City

Mangalore, Apr 14: “The city will shortly be opening itself up for international level sports activities, mainly cricket, once the proposed international sports complex, which has been a long-pending demand of the sports-loving people of Dakshina Kannada district, is completed,” said Dr V S Acharya, state home minister, after participating in he foundation laying ceremony for the new international stadium-cum-sports complex at Bangrakulur in the city, on Wednesday April 14.

“The state government is fully geared to extend full support in the progress of works of this sports complex. It will provide whatever is required, for the completion of the project as soon as possible,” he said after inaugurating the ceremony. As the city has been growing very fast, and also in view of the fact that it has been identified as the second major city in the state, there is a need for a good quality stadium, which in turn, will work to inspire the local cricketing talents as well as the sports lovers in city and surrounding regions to excel in these fields,” he added.

The programme was organized by Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association (DKCA) at the venue earlier earmarked for the stock exchange, where the complex is proposed to come up. This land has already been allotted to it by the district administration. The district administration has allotted 5.5 acres of land for the stadium, in the preliminary stage.

District in-charge minister, Krishna Palemar, said that there is a demand for 16 more acres of land for the sports complex. He added that if allotted, this will be helpful in earning the international level recognition for the complex. He hoped that the district administration will accede to this request by acquiring the adjacent lands. He also noted that there the district suffers from the lack of a good quality cricket stadium, and felt that with the inauguration of this stadium, this shortage will get fulfilled.

“There is no controversy either in the land acquisition or in the construction of sports complex at this spot. Hence, the work will be completed at the earliest,” he added.

The organizers informed at the programme that the sports complex will be constructed, duly adhering to international standards, which will be adequate for organizing international level cricket tournaments. DKCA will supervise the construction. The proposed land is located very near to the national highway in Bangrakulur area, where the international convention of Bunts community had been held several years back, with the participation of over a lac of people.

The foundation laying ceremony was held, duly following rituals connected with it. The stone plaque was unveiled by the home ministry, to signify the inauguration of the construction of the complex.

MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA, Abhayachandra Jain, Coastal Development Authority chairman, Nagaraja Shetty, Dr Shantarama Shetty, vice-chancellor of Nitte University, president of DKCA, Dr Srikanth Rai, and secretary, Arun Kumar Shetty, were also present.

Mangalore City Corporation will take precautionary measures to mitigate artifical floods during the monsoon, said MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayprakash.

MLA, Mayor and MCC standing committee presidents visited the low lying areas from Kottara to Gujjarakere in city corporation limits on Tuesday to examine the work on drains. He said temporary drains will be constructed to allow the water to flow freely during monsoon.

Drains will also be cleaned. In many places, plastic covers thrown to the drains have lead to the blocking of the drains leading to flood. Health and engineering section officials will be put into work to clear the drains. If the work on the drains and footpaths were taken along with the concreting of the road, the problem of artificial flood would not have arisen.

Dr Vijayprakash said tenders have been invited for the work on 11 major drains and footpaths in the city limits at an estimated cost of Rs 4.6 crore. An estimate is being prepared for laying 23 km footpath and drains in the city. The tender will be invited once we get grant from the government, he informed.

They need atleast 20 more acres. Most International stadia in India have at least 25 acres. If we get 30 acres that will be excellent to build a stadium for 50,000 plus.

YOU MUST HAVE LEARNT MARATHI AND LEARNT HOW TO MAKE AAMTEA! Hope to see you in Mumbai.

Mangalore April 14: Home Minister Dr V S Acharya laid foundation stone for a Sports Complex at Bangrakuloor on Wednesday. The sports complex, which is going to comprise an international cricket stadium is an ambitious project of the Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association.

The stadium is expected to come up in two years. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Acharya assured the association of full cooperation from the State government towards realising its dream.

The government is ready to consider your demand of allotting more land for the complex. If the association takes a delegation to Bangalore, necessary meeting will be arranged with the Chief Minister and the Sports Minister, he said.

Its a great news that bellary is gonna get a cricket stadium of such high cost and surely it ll be of great class. But it can have only domestic matches as mother of Indian cricket BCCI has stopped conducting matches at stadiums other than which is owned by local cricket associations like ksca in bangalore, vca of nagpur etc. This is the reason why no more matches ll be played in kanpur stadium. Look at mysore one it has such a world class ground where ranji final was held but no international match because its own by infosys.

The water-level of Netravati river, which is a prominent water source for the district, is reducing considerably that it may dry up completely within few days.

Thousands of residents in Belthangady, Bantwal and Mangalore taluk depend on Netravati river for agriculture and other purposes. Due to reduction in rainfall, the river flow has been reduced considerably.

Meanwhile, the exploitation of river for drinking water and agriculture purposes too has contributed to decrease in water flow. Water is being pumped from the river at several places by individuals for their agriculture farms.

The reduction in Netravati river flow has affected those devotees who visit Sri Kshetra Dharmastala that they are not able to take the holy bath. Similarly, drinking water crisis too has been arisen in the temple premises.

Speaking to reporters, at the bathing ghat in Dharmastala, Sri Kshetra Dharmastala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade said that the government should drop the Netravati river diversion project. “Instead of river diversion project, the government should take initiative to build a vented dam across Netravati to store water for summer,” he added.

In an informal chat with reporters on the sidelines of a function to lay foundation stone for the proposed sports complex of Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association, Acharya said plan for proposed police commissionerate building here is ready. It will be set up at the place which houses DAR police office on the district police office premises. This 160-year old building will be renovated at a cost of Rs 2 crore and made functional, he said.

Justifying the opening of the commissionerate on Republic Day, he said, "We needed a system in place to take forward this proposal. The government has set aside funds for the process in the state budget," he said adding that had the commissionerate been inaugurated during this fiscal, it would have taken one more year before it finally took shape. Now, one can expect things to fall in place during the current fiscal, he said.

* Residents in the vicinity of Bangara Kuloor are unwilling to part with their land
* The DKCA has only 4.5 acres of land in its possession now
* International stadium needs at least 18 acres of land

UNWILLING:Raghunath Salian (left), a member of the family that takes care of the Kodadabbu temple in the Bangara Kulooru area, is against the move to acquire land.

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association's proposal to construct an international cricket stadium here appears to have been made without a concrete plan.

The association laid the foundation stone on 4.5 acres of land at Bangara Kuloor on Wednesday and projected the move as the first step towards the construction of a cricket stadium of international standards. Its members hope that, like the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore, this stadium too would have a clubhouse, gymnasiums, badminton and tennis courts as well as a bar and restaurant.

But to translate this plan into reality, the association needs a much larger area, and there is no clarity where the remaining land will come from.

By the projection of the association's office-bearers who addressed a press conference here on Thursday, a complete stadium will require at least 18 acres. They said the 4.5 acres given to them by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department will form the core of the stadium. The surrounding land will be acquired in stages to form a contiguous holding of around 18 acres.

But acquisition of surrounding land appears to be a knotty issue. President of the DKCA Srikanth Rai said that the association was “absolutely sure” of getting an additional six acres of land.

About half of these six acres is entangled in litigation, and local residents are threatening to oppose the acquisition. However, Mr. Rai said that the district administration had promised to help the association in resolving this issue.

Even if the association manages to acquire all the 11.5 acres, it will be short of seven acres. The association plans to acquire this land from private owners in the vicinity, which is likely to pose even bigger problems.

The seven acres of land are held by nearly 30 families, who are reportedly unwilling to part with it.

When the area was visited after the press conference, it was found that a majority of the landowners there are against acquisition because of either sentimental or economic reasons.

B.K. Ramu (60), a resident, said that the land identified for acquisition also houses a 200-year-old temple of Kodadabbu Daiva. He said that his family was one of its caretakers, which had over 3,000 people from Bangara Kuloor and neighbouring areas of Kottara, Panjimagoaru, Padukodi and Maladi as devotees. His son Prasad said that the residents of the area had submitted a memorandum to the district administration expressing their opposition.

Others such as Jayashree (45) and Avid D'Souza said that they were agriculturists and parting with the land would rob them off their livelihood. All the residents said that they were unwilling to part with their land even for a very good compensation package.

The construction going on in derelakattai -Mudipu specially flats will they get buyyers, Why I am asking is, I am a frequent visitor of kochin from last six months. because half of the team sits there in Infopark. It is situated 8 Kms from main highway and 10 Kms from citi center M.G.ROAD. so I would say it is like mudipu of mangalore. There also lot of construction going on from out side money and lot of finished flats of tall towers. I could see lot of flats ( around more than 2,000).
But there are no takers it seems, Now they are ready to give for 15- 18 Lacs 2BHK. People wants to stay in citi rather than staying near infopark. And those migrated from other part kochin wants to make daily travel from near by place.

So do you think people would buy these flats. I don't see mangalore expanding so fast that we feel mudupi will be within mangalore citi.

Just a Question:

I notice that people working in Infosys Mudipu still prefer to stay near Kottara,Ladyhill,Lalbagh...farthest being Kankanady (hardly anyone stays near Mudipu now..maybe they will once some of these apartment are complete:) )...they prefer to stay close to the "City"....i.e. areas with all amenities..and prefer to commute daily although its a pain...

Although Deralakatte/Mudupi may be developed as Murthy put it, but I feel those areas may take another 5-7 years to match most of the amenities the core of the city provides...

Maybe investing in land is a better option than apartments...as the value of apartments do not increase at the same rate once constructed...

Irrespective of that...i feel Deralakatte/Mudupi is going to be the next "Electronic City" of Mangalore...hopefully better planned!!

By Team Mangalorean Bangalore

BANALORE, April 16, 2010: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has decided to start Mangalore One centers for providing all kinds of services for residents of the City. Beginning with, Mangalore One, modeled on the lines of Bangalore One, will become operational at Mallikatta in Mangalore and MCC office premises in the City.

The centers would provide 13 different services to the people, including payment of bills of water and power.

Several initiatives taken up by the MCC have come in appreciation from Minister for Urban Development S Suresh Kumar who reviewed the schemes implemented by seven city corporations of Mangalore, Davanagere, Bellary, Gulbarga, Hubli-Dharwad, Mysore and Belgaum cities.

The MCC has launched an Asha Chavadi programme for the benefit of the senior citizens and physically challenged persons of the city. Its office has been set up at the ground floor of the corporation.

Unlike other city corporations, there was no drinking water problem in the coastal city. Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuaj informed the Minster various citizen-friendly policies taken by the Corporation to change the public image of the civic body.

However, outdated distribution network, and high percentage of leakage have severely affected drinking water supplies in all city corporations of the State. This was revealed during a video-conference on Friday held by Minister for Urban Development S Suresh Kumar with Deputy Commissioners and Commissioners of seven city corporations.

The Minister, who held third video-conference in four months, directed all city corporation officials to come out with citizen-friendly initiatives to change the public image of functioning of the corporations.

The Minister, who admitted problems in the water distribution network, has directed all city corporation officials to focus on sanitation and drinking water supply in the
coming months.

He said he Government has decided to purchase mechanised cleaning equipment for cleaning drainages and drainage holes in all city corporations of the State. Tenders have been called for purchase of mechanised equipment for all city corporations in the state. He reviewed the progress achieved under various schemes. Each machine would cost Rs. 25 lakh while the foreign equipment cost would st Rs. 1.25 crore. Annual maintenance cost would be about Rs. 75 to Rs. 80 lakh. Each corporation would spend Rs. 5 to Rs 6 crores to purchase mechanised equipment for cleaning drainages and holes, he said.

The officials of all city corporations informed the Minister that there was no shortage in the availability of water in their city limits. But they were unable to supply of bulk water to residents due to high leakage in the network and outdated pipeline system. Except Mangalore and Mysore, rest of the corporations have been supplying water every alternative days or once in 3-4 days. Erratic supply of power had also affected the drinking water supplies in cities, officials said.

Dharmastala Gramabhivrddhi Yojane" is yeilding results. "Beedi Rollers" have become "Jasmine Growers". Cargo terminal with cold storage facilities at MIA should lead to better life for these old beedi workers. Do you like to have a beedi?

Murthy,

I am not the supporter of beedi nor smoking. But it is fact that thousands of familly live on that. You go to any village in kottekar -beeri or neermarga or any where in D.K. you see people live on beedi tieing. They have very good way of supplying and getting their work done. they give bonus yearly, student fund etc.

Infact majority of employement in undevided d.k and kasargod is based on this. Infact many of my relatives and friends living on villages are still depend on this.

some 30 years back when there where no industry in mangalore, it is the beedi bussiness which has provided lot of employment.

Hence I have some soft corner for it.

That is so true...Beedi, Tiles and Cashew were the lifeline industries of the coastal districts long before NMPT, MRPL, etc came in.....I guess they still provide more employment than rest of these industries.
In Beedies - PVS, Mangalore Ganesh Beedies, Bharath Beedi Works, etc are pioneers and known world over....Now with the decline in Beedies sales they have diversified....They undoubtedly have an impact in Mangalore and around directly or indirectly.

Beedi industry is providing employment is correct, but at what cost?

India: women beedi rollers seek new ways of earning a living (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2872/is_3_29/ai_107121987/)

Still, loss of income isn't the only problem faced by beedi rollers. Although most of the women don't smoke, working conditions threaten both their physical and economic well-being. Few of the illiterate women are aware of their legal rights as workers ... As home-based workers, they are often short-changed by arbitrary rejection ... Their health is also threatened: inhaling tobacco dust can cause as many problems as smoking ...

So Beedi industry has given slow deaths to people to whom which has provided employment.

Here is what experts think

Experts suggest increasing taxes on beedis (http://www.thehindu.com/2010/04/12/stories/2010041259820400.htm)

* “To reduce tobacco consumption, save lives and earn substantially higher revenues”

NEW DELHI: Increasing taxes on beedis is the most effective way of reducing tobacco consumption, saving lives and earning substantially higher revenues, a recent study titled “Economics of tobacco and tobacco taxation” conducted by a team of experts and funded by the Bloomberg Global Initiative to Reduce Tobacco has said.

Quoting the findings of the research paper, Healis-Sekhsaria Institute of Public Health director Dr. Prakash C. Gupta said the recommendations include increasing taxes on beedis from Rs.14 to Rs.98 per 1,000 beedis that will increase the Government revenue by Rs.36.9 billion while curbing 15.5 million premature deaths due to beedi smoking.

The report points out that by 2020, tobacco will be responsible for 13 per cent of all deaths in the country and estimates that without any intervention more than 38.4 million beedi smokers and 13.2 million cigarette smokers are likely to die prematurely due to smoking.

Further, the study recommends a five-point strategy to curtail tobacco consumption by increasing taxes on beedis and cigarettes, regulating beedi production and simplifying the current complex tax system.

Tobacco-related deaths

“Increasing taxes on cigarettes to 78 per cent of retail price will avert 3.4 million premature tobacco-related deaths, while increasing Rs.146.3 billion in additional revenues each year. In addition, simplifying the tax system by reducing differential taxes across products will help convey a clear message that all tobacco products are harmful. Regular adjustments of tobacco taxes to account for inflation would help ensure high relative prices across tobacco products,” noted the report.

Dr. Gupta added: “The recommendations made in the study should be considered while evaluating tobacco taxation in the country. Raising taxes on cigarettes and beedis would curb the premature death of millions of people in India while generating billions of dollars in additional tax revenues.”

In India, beedis account for more than half of the tobacco consumed with an estimated 100 million people -- mostly the poor and illiterate – smoking beedis. More Indians die from smoking beedis than from all other forms of tobacco combined – Indians smoke eight times as many beedis as cigarettes.

Beedi smoking increases the risk of oral cancer, cancer of the lung, stomach and oesophagus, heart disease, chronic lung disease, asthma and tuberculosis. Beedi smoke has proven to have carcinogens, toxins and poisonous substances.

No campaign

“While there are various campaigns and awareness drives against cigarette smoking, no one seems to be mentioning beedis, which is the biggest killer. India accounts for more than 85 per cent of the world's beedi production. Beedi smoke contains high levels of tobacco specific nitrosamines -- the two most potent cancer causing agents. It is high time the Government took beedi smoking seriously,” said Dr. Gupta.

Taxing beedis best way to curb tobacco abuse, says study (http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/et-cetera/Taxing-beedis-best-way-to-curb-tobacco-abuse-says-study/articleshow/5775066.cms)

The main bread earners of lakhs of families have died because of habit of smoking. IMO Beedi industry has ruined many family than the number of families it provided employment. So, I don't like Beedi Industry to continue in Mangaluru or anywhere else.

Agree. If Beedi workers switch over to cultivation of these varieties of vegetables and flowers like jasmine they can also live a healthy life. Government should allow them to grow these plants in unused government lands and help them through schemes like MREGA.

* Council meet witnesses heated discussions over load-shedding

All confusions regarding the Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) of Mangalore will be solved within 15 days, said Mayor Rajani Dugganna.

Addressing the general meeting of the City Corporation at the Council Hall here on Friday, she said a delegation would meet the Urban Development Minister at Bangalore soon and discuss the objections and confusions regarding the CDP.

Earlier, the Opposition members including former mayor Shashidhar Hegde, senior councillor Harinath urged that the Corporation should give a final picture of the CDP at the earliest since many middle class people are awaiting the MCC’s nod to begin new construction works. “Confusions galore regarding the new masterplan.

If the situation continues, people themselves will revolt and start constructing houses without licenses. Don’t create such a scene,” said Shashidhar Hegde. Mayor Rajani Dugganna said all the confusions would be cleared once they were brought into the notice of the Urban Development Minister.

New bus stand

Prior to this, former mayor M Shankar Bhat urged the Council to give details on the progress of the new bus stand at Pumpwell. “It would be of greater advantage, if the Pumpwell bus stand is opened for public before monsoons. The DC is also enthusiastic about this,” he said, which was supported by other members too.

Replying to this, a Revenue official said an estimation of Rs 92 lakh has been done for the initial works of the bus stand, and the levelling works of 4 acre-land would be started as soon as the government approval is obtained.

However, the authorities concerned have sought a copy of the resolution passed by the City Corporation in this regard. Following the clearance, the works will be assigned through e-tendering, he explained.

Power, water

The Council witnessed heated discussions over unscheduled load shedding and irregular water supply. Corporators Mariamma Thomas, Jayanthi, Appi and others complained that the strange pattern of power supply in the last few days has staggered the entire activities of the city, that too during examination time.

The members also complained that the Mescom is not supplying power to the express lines connected to the pump houses due to which the water supply has also got disrupted.

Assistant Executive Engineer from Mescom Abdul Khader said the City was in need of 160 mw of power for the past one week, but electricity supplied to Mescom was just 100 mw. However, the situation has returned to normalcy in the recent days, he explained. But his response that there have been no power cuts for the express lines, invited criticism from Commissioner K N Vijay Prakash too.

“I don’t agree with the point that there has been continuous power supply to the express feeders at Thumbe and other pump houses, since we receive frequent complaints of power cuts from them. I will inform this to the Mescom MD and the Executive Engineer in writing,” he said.

Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde advised that the Corporation should conduct a meeting with the Mescom higher officials regarding power supply. He also suggested that the Corporation should think of alternative sources of water (like Sarapady dam) now itself in case the city faces thirsty days.

This applies to other industries like Cigarettes, Liquor as well...While these industries generate enormous amount of money for the exchequer in the form of taxes, they do drain the same exchequer in terms of socio-economic cost, healthcare cost, etc..
Prominent Beedi Companies in the region came into existance long before the ill-effects of tobacoo were identified. Anti-tobacco movements in the US started only in the 1950s.
You will also have to rewind say 40 years back, when most of the people in the region where landless and/or jobless and industries other than these hardly existed...So unskilled people really didnt have much choice with respect to work...

The topic can be debated in detail but I do not think it falls in line with the objectives of this forum or thread so I`ll refrain from it :)

I seconded Visnaya with regards to the impact these industries have been to Mangalore region...

For e.g.
PVS H.O. was once the tallest building in the city..:)
Mangalore Ganesh Beedis with its assets/properties would be the envy of anybody.
Bharath Beedis - classic case where the younger generation diversified successfully from a traditional industry like Beedies into Mall,Properties, Car Dealership, Bookshops and more...
etc,etc

Coming to the present/future, it would be a good idea indeed if the beedi-rollers switched over to cultivation of varieties of vegetables and flowers like jasmine as Murthy suggested.

Disclosure - I am neither involved in Beedies trade nor have a soft corner for them :) This is just my opinion.

PWD minister Udasi informed that a total of 4000 km national highways in the state will be upgraded under KSHIP 2nd stage project including Mangaluru-Hasana highway. * They say there is no need to acquire any more land for widening the national highway
* NHAI has marked buildings for demolition
* Property-losers suspect compensation will be less than market value

MANGALORE: A few residents and a team from The Hindu on Saturday visited the recently constructed house of Mohammed Iqbal in Maroli and found that it is about 35 metres away from the middle of the National Highway 17 that passes along the Karnataka coast.

About 50 per cent of this building, which is yet to be occupied, is supposed to be acquired for widening the national highway into a four-lane.

The 20-year-old, 18-flat High Point apartment at Nanthoor Circle, which according to its owners, is farther from the middle of the road, will also be diagonally cut for the same purpose. The surveyors of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is executing the project on public-private partnership basis, have made the markings on the apartment for demolition and confiscation.

The owners, mostly aged above 67, say the whole building will collapse if it is diagonally cut and will thereby render them homeless. While authorities are expected to limit the acquisition to 30 metres from the middle of the road, the owners of the buildings, which are located beyond this limit, sought to know why they were being victimised unnecessarily. People having properties within 60 metres of the proposed project area are not convinced that NHAI indeed needs so much of land. The Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged is likely to lose its administrative block and the area where 80-odd elderly persons pray and take a stroll.

The Sandesh School of Art will lose its entire open space in front of its building, though the area appears to be quite far away from the road. Many families in Maroli, like that of Ramachandra Attavara, will lose their entire houses while some like K. Shivaram, who is living there for over five decades, will lose a vertical half of their houses.

They all staged a demonstration at Thokkottu junction recently.

Rationale

The people say NHAI could provide all the facilities with less than half of the land being acquired now. Engineer P.C. Hashir, who studied highway engineering, has prepared a model of a four-lane road, complete with median, footpaths, drains and space for utility services, which is only 23.6 metres wide. President of the newly-formed Nanthoor-Tharethota NH 17 Citizens' Welfare Forum Mahafooz Ur Rahaman said that NHAI was already in possession of land required for a 48-m-wide road. People point out that Kerala and Goa had decided to restrict the width of roads to below 45 m.

Many residentsfear that the compensation would be less than one third of the market value and that would be insufficient for buying another property of same value elsewhere in the city. Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj told The Hindu that the new road design was based on a policy of the NHAI. People should try to convince the NHAI about their demands, he said.

In Kerala and Goa, the NHAI had threatened to stop taking up further projects if its norms were not adhered to. “Karnataka cannot afford it (missing NHAI projects),” he said.

Mr. Ponnuraj said he would ensure that property-losers received a package that was close to market value.

New Delhi, Apr 18 (PTI) Concerned over fast erosion of Ullal beach in Karnataka threatening life and property, a Central panel has cleared the state government's Rs 1,431 crore mitigative plan for its protection.

The blueprint comprises a hybrid solution to erosion envisaging altered breakwater training walls to ensure that sediment from the Netravati river would be pushed southward and support the nourishment of the southern beach.

The long-term and sustainable erosion protection plan to be implemented by Karnataka's Public Works Department (PWD) is expected to prevent possible breaching.

Two offshore multi-purpose artificial soft reefs about 600 meters from shore with a gap of 1 km and 4 km near shore berms would be constructed to hold proposed nourishment in place, as per plan.

"Coastal erosion in the beach in Mangalore has been causing serious miseries in the region for decades with many houses being lost.

PTI (http://www.ptinews.com/news/614567_Mitigative-plan-to-check-erosion-of-Karnataka-beach)

Ullal sea erosion mainly occurs during monsoon season. Whether diversion of extra water of Netravati to east help in reducing erosion? Even construction of small dams on Phalguni/Gurupura river may help in storing water and reducing the burden on rivermouth? Anyway it is good that the central government has sanctioned a mitigation plan for the sea erosion and hope that it will be effective.

MRPL need not fund as KSCA is willing to bear the cost of land and stadium. They should enquire from MSEZ. I would prefer KSCA to build a stadium . Otherwise ODI's or IPL would not be staged.

I am a little confused with regards to the execution of this project. Can someone please throw some light...
Last time around KSCA placed a request of atleast 25 acres with the district administration for building an International class stadium...I am wondering why it needs to go the government route...while it is understandable for large industries to go through government for acquiring large tracts (read 1000s of acres) of contiguous land....25 acres if surely not that large (a little outside city, ofcourse :) ) and can definitely be done by KSCA with its financial might.

Secondly, KSCA website says Mangalore Sporting Club is its institutional member for Mangalore region. Whereas DKCA is in-charge of construction and maintenance of the new stadium...Are they one and the same?

Ajay,
It is indeed an excellent idea if they get in touch with MSEZ!!

More national, global brands to be located in Mangalore mall

Our Bureau

Mangalore, April 18

The Mangalore-based Mohtisham Complexes Pvt Ltd — which has come out with a 5.4 lakh sq ft mall, ‘City Centre' — will open it for public use in Mangalore from April 25. Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr S.M. Arshad, Managing Director of Mohtisham Complexes Pvt Ltd, said that ‘City Centre' is the second largest mall in Karnataka and 10th largest in the country.

City Centre, which was in stages of development for the past four years, will have more than 170 tenants.

Some of the national and international retailers are coming for first time to Mangalore at the mall. Some of the brands such as Spar Hypermarket, Westside, Reliance Timeout, Reliance Trends, Reliance Digital and Reliance Jewels will begin their operations soon, he said.

For the first time, Reliance Time Out has decided to keep textbooks in its store, he said. Almost 60 per cent of the mall will be open by May-end. One of the international brands such as Marks & Spencer has agreed to open its first store in a tier-II Indian city at City Centre Mall in Mangalore, Mr Arshad said.

The Mexico-based multiplex operator – Cinepolis – will operate a five-screen cinema at the mall by August, he said.

Mr Dharmaraj, Chief Executive Officer of Mohtisham Complexes Pvt Ltd, said that the mall offers seven levels of retail space compared with the usual four levels of retail space in other malls.

MANGALORE APRIL 19: Undeterred by the Mangalore City Corporation's refusal to issue the “City Centre”, a mall here, the completion certificate, the project developers Mohtisham Complexes are going ahead with its opening.

After four years of controversy and prolonged hiccups over alleged building irregularities, the mall on K.S. Rao Road here is all set to be opened on April 25.

S.M. Arshad, Managing Director of the Mohtisham Complexes, told presspersons here on Saturday evening that the mall would be inaugurated on April 25. Confirming that the building was “riddled with irregularities and violations”, Town Planning Officer of the corporation Balakrishna Gowda told The Hindu that it was “illegal for the project proponents to go ahead with the opening without clearances.”

However, he said that he was “not in a position” to comment on what sort of punitive action could be taken against the project proponents for flouting the rules. “That is for our higher-ups to decide. Nothing is in my hands,” he said.

MCC Commissioner K.N. Vijayprakash too expressed concern over the violations in the project but he refused to state what action his department would take if the project proponents went ahead with the opening ceremony. Reacting to the issue, Mohtisham's CEO and chief spokesman conceded at the press conference that some “mistakes” had been committed, inadvertently. But, in the same breath, he termed as “lacking legal sanctity” the civic authority's decision to deny licences to the controversial structure.

He, however, failed to answer how the mall could be opened without the necessary licences.

The opening ceremony promises to be a gala affair. According to Mr. Arshad, it would feature leaders from across the political spectrum, including MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, district-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar, Mayor Rajani Duganna and Congress MLAs U.T. Khader and B. Ramanath Rai.

Mr. Arshad said that the City Centre would be the State's second largest mall. The gargantuan structure, which will house a five-screen multiplex, food court and restaurants, in addition to top brand stores, is spread across 5,40,000 sq. ft., and built at a cost of over Rs. 115 crore.

“The world's fourth largest multiplex operator, Mexico-based Cinepolis, will operate a five-screen cinema hall at the mall,” said Mr. Arshad.

When the article first came(by Dez?or Visnaya) I wanted tp comment but decided not to. It is true that Beedi Industry has provided livelihood to thousands of women it used to be the one notorious for exploitation just like the sweat shops which are prevalent all over Asia..people working antisocial hrs,low wages ,Child labour. Some British companies were accused of this and immediately there was a big uproar here condemning these companies. Priamark was the latest. I totally boycot Tommy Hilfiger. The company is terrible. Similarly beedy industries were employing illeterate women and child labour..children were rolling beedies when they should have been at school. There have been many studies done at various universities in India with respect to the beedi Industry and exploitation. The other objection is the product itself which destroys the life of thousands of people world wide but now mostly in asia as the tobacco company started targetting India,Africa and other third world countries where checks and rules are lax.It is good to know that they have changed their profession.

I agree with murthy and Ajay that beedi is bad. But so as arecanut and liqur both are bad. My father worked in beedi industry for 20 years befor startinghis own bussiness. He always recalls those days when he passed SSLC and No jobs in mangalore. One of the later nationalised bank offered him 24 rupees/month But one of the beedi industry offered him 35 Rupees /month. That was the state of beedi industry in mangalore. He traveled through out india establishing beedi offices ( many southern state and maharastra). He never took smooking. he is 80 still healthy. Like this I have several people story to tell who never took smoking but got benifeted by it. Tell me which industry provide you work at your door step and work when you want and collect the product when you finished. Many of my friends and relatives lived in villages where cost of living is very less still got earning because of beedies and their typical style of working.

There is no doubt in my mind about the bad effect of beedies on health and also on environment. But mangalore economics beedi has playyed a large role.

Now since there is Beedi discussion going on, I always amazed by one thing that is How come mangaloreans company became number one in beedi business.

why I am asking is the beddi leaves are comming from Madhya pradesh- nagpur area jungles. Tobacco is produced largely in mysore -madikeri- north eastern kerala and andhra( Guntoor-anna parthi ( her ITC has large factory)). Mysore will be Number -1 in india for tobacco( akash will be happy to know this).

Then how come managalorean compnies established big businesses in beedi?? When i was andhra( 12 years back) my friends were laughing at me when I said mangalore is famous for beedis, they said andhra is famous for beedis. when i told them that all these company in andhra is owned by mangalorean they were amazed.

Main beedi company I know are:
1. Mangalore Ganesh beedies, Mysore ( they own many beedi company in kerala, tamilnadu, andhra and maharastra) in 1990 they were giving direct and indirect empoyment to 10Lac people. they were consistantly highest excise duty payer from 1960-1985)
2. Bharath Beedi works, Mangalore
3. PVS Beedis works
4. sadhu beedis works
5. Prakash Beedis works
6. Shanteri Beedis works
7. Subhash beedis works

MANGALORE: The Railways has approved the construction of a railway overbridge (RoB) or railway overpass at Jeppu-Mahakalipadpu level-crossing here. The council of the Mangalore City Corporation has given its nod for the proposal, accordingly.

Chief Whip in the council Ranganath C. Kini has clarified that the Railways had approved an RoB and not a railway underbridge (RuB) or railway underpass there.

Mr. Kini told The Hindu on Sunday that although the agenda tabled at the council meeting on Friday had sought the council's approval for RuB, the council made necessary changes to approve the RoB as the Railways had approved only the latter.

G.V. Rajashekar, Executive Engineer at the corporation, confirmed that the approval had been given for RoB and not RuB.

The road passing through this level-crossing connects the National Highway 17.The council on Friday decided to forward its approval for the project to the Department of Urban Development for administrative clearance.

Gill, who agreed about the importance that the SAI campus project would have for the region told the delegation that he would review the status of the proposal in this regard with the officials of SAI and others concerned and initiate steps to get the campus up and running at the earliest.

Gill's deputy Pratik Prakashbapu Patil who had laid the foundation stone for the sports complex project of the university on January 14 too had assured to consider positively a request from the university authorities to fund its proposal for the sports complex, estimated to cost Rs 25 crore. The ministry is ready to set up sports centre of SAI on university campus provided university came forward to give the land, Patil had said.

This sports complex may serve southern region. Mangalore may require one more sports complex in northern region. MSEZ/MRPL may seriously think about this. This would be beneficial to MSEZ employees also.

What happened to the proposal of Cricket stadium in Konaje mangalore university campus and in Gangimutt. Have they scrapped those proposal and laid foundation stone ceromony at bungrakuloor. These two places already have land available so no more issue of acquization. Also we need not have to distrub the traditional importance places like booth gudi etc.

What will be the effect on traditional gyms? Whether this gym will help our traditional power lifters in any way? Good that there is a project for cricket stadium also. What are the expectations of power lifters of Mangaluru from the government and others? Other sports in which Mangaloreans are doing well I think is swimming and athletics.

http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=75803

All these sports may also require better facilities and sponsorers.

As far as my knowledge goes these Gym are for rich class and not for sports training purpose. Even though there are best gum in mangalore( new once). It is always Balanjaneya Gym at Puttu prabhu lane, Car street generated maximun athelate. Reason is the trainners( all national award winner) and charges. they have best trainners or collegues and charge Rs25/= per month. So many people avail that. It is the environment which gets you the boost. Every day your collegue challenge you and you improve. Thye have improved the Gym facility also time to time by contribution from old students.

Another area where mangalore spared well is swimming. Here also athlets are not got training from five start hotel. they got from mangala swimming pool.

I feel mangalore has great opportunity to do well in Cricket, Wholly ball, Running race and foot ball ( because we are placed between foot ball lovers Goa and kerala). Only thing utility required and need role model to tell this is also a good courrier. Power lifting and weight lifting this is what has happend. there are many role models to show.

I am really happy that Mangalore region is getting state and central support for soprts activity.

TNN, Apr 20, 2010, 10.12pm IST

MANGALORE: Paid parking in the city is all set to burn a hole in the pocket of vehicle owners once Mangalore City Corporation announces its revised parking policy. The new time-based policy seeks to lower the first slab of charges for parking from the current four hours to one hour and charge the same amount charged for the first hour for every additional hour or part thereof. The parking fee varies based on type of vehicle.

DC V Ponnuraj told reporters here on Monday that the city corporation has already discussed the revised parking policy in its pre-council meeting and the final proposal is expected to come before the council for discussion and final approval. "What we have told the civic body to do is charge vehicle owners the same amount charged for the first hour for every hour thereof. This will serve as a disincentive for unnecessary parking,'' DC said.

Noting that on-street parking is resulting in an undesirable effect in that it is affecting free flow of traffic, the DC said the civic body and the district administration are determined to tackle this issue. The notification regulating parking and no-parking areas in Central Business District of the city on Monday will be strictly enforced to ensure free flow of traffic and the traffic police have been instructed to act accordingly, Ponnuraj said.

The city traffic police will utilise their tow vehicles to deal with errant motorists who violate the new parking policy, he said. In addition, the idea to regulate haphazard parking in the city will be a success when agencies that successfully bid to operate the paid parking lots on behalf of the civic body too own their own tow vehicles and hand over haphazardly parked vehicles to the traffic police for necessary action, he said.

R Ramesh, in-charge SP said the police department has received various traffic safety related equipment worth Rs 50 lakh from the road safety week celebration fund of the state government. The installation of these equipment and training for our personnel to handle them will commence from Thursday, he said, adding that city police is committed to bringing order to the manner in which traffic across the city operates.

Naina J A, Mangalore, April 20, DH News Service:

For the first time in the history of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), the MCC during 2009-10 has collected all time high Self-Assessment Scheme (SAS) of property tax based on capital value, which came into effect from April 1, 2008.

The MCC is successful in collecting Rs 26.94 crore (both SAS and ARV), thus registering a success of 90.21 per cent so far. The total revenue expectation through SAS and arrears under old annual rental value (ARV) system for the two assessment years was Rs 29.86 crore.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash said in 2009-10, the MCC has registered 94.38 per cent success in the collection of SAS alone.

The property tax collection in February 2010 was only 39 per cent; in January, it was 34.17 per cent. The corporation netted Rs 10.27 crore under ARV in 2007-08 against the target of Rs 15.92 crore.

The collection under SAS in 2008-09 was Rs 6.04 crore against target of Rs 14.82 crore and ARV Rs 3.10 crore against the target of Rs 5.65 crore.

He said “Mangalore City Corporation went on an overdrive to collect property tax under the self assessment scheme (SAS). Buoyed by the State government’s final approval of rates under which it could collect tax, the Corporation made arrangements to enable people pay their taxes for the assessment years 2008-09 and 2009-10 respectively at 46 branches of 16 banks spread over 53 revenue wards of the civic body along with the sub offices of Mangalore City Corporation. In fact, the MCC had requested the banks to open additional counters to facilitate the citizens to pay the tax. Syndicate Bank had opened additional 22 counters in the city.”

Awareness

Dr Vijayaprakash said the MCC has taken series of steps to create an awareness among people to pay SAS on time. Banners, pamphlets, TV scroll, even in theatres, the scroll was carried out urging the citizens to pay the tax.

The MCC even used mobile vehicles to make announcements to remind the people of the region to pay tax. Even the medium of radio including FMs were used to remind the citizens to pay SAS. “I myself took part in a phone-in-programme in a local channel and appealed the citizens to pay tax,” he informed.

He said “the MCC had even put up shamiana outside the MCC building to help the citizens to fill the application forms.

Volunteers

About 150 volunteers were trained in filling the application by the MCC.
In many places, bill collectors had organised interactions with the citizens and explained them the need to pay SAS. Moreover, the counters were kept open from 8 am to 8 pm, to help the people to pay SAS even after the office hours.”

According to the revised rates, the tax for residential buildings was 0.5 per cent of capital value instead of 0.6 per cent, and the levy on commercial buildings will be 1.5 per cent of capital value instead of 2 per cent. The rate for the third category of property has been reduced by 50 per cent. The rate of tax for non-residential/non-commercial buildings has been fixed at 1 per cent of capital value. Earlier, this category had been classified as commercial/non-residential buildings and levied a tax of 2 per cent. The tax for vacant sites measuring up to 1,000 sq m is 0.1 per cent; between 1,000 sq m and 4,000 sq m, 0.025 per cent; and those above 4,000 sq m, 0.01 per cent.

Mangalore Tech Bay is Tanglin's second development project and is located in the Central Business District of Jeppu, Mangalore. The campus is situated on the banks of the estuary formed by the backwaters of the river Netravati and the Arabian Sea, presenting a picturesque view.

Mangalore is known for its enterprising people, its innumerable educational institutions and a vast multitude of educated youth in and around its geography, a good medical infrastructure, excellent transport system (Rail, Road, Air and Water) and a flourishing industry. YOU MUST HAVE LEARNT MARATHI AND LEARNT HOW TO MAKE AAMTEA! Hope to see you in Mumbai.

Ajay,

I am sorry for delayed response to your comment. In fact, I was holidaying in Belgaum, Sirsi, Tirthahalli and Mangalore. I could see that our state infrastructure is moving one notch up.

Most raods are in good state, some roads which were in bad state few years back and they have totally changed over the years. True frest and greenary is retained in Western Ghats and I am happy for that. I mean urbanization has not made impact in and around Sirsi and Tirthahalli.

However, 2 major cities like Belgaum and Mangalore have seen remarkable changes. Both the cities are slowly wearing Metro look and all set for major infra haul. I was really dealighted for that.

I will meet you in Mumbai for sure.

Religious structure comes in the way of NH widening

Staff Correspondent

Administration has not shifted it citing opposition

NHAI is against changing the alignment

‘It will render the stretch a potential accident zone'

Photo: R. Eswarraj

DETERRENT:The NHAI has not been able to complete the widening of a 700-m strech on NH 48 near B.C. Road in Mangalore because of this Brahmarakutlu there.

MANGALORE: Opposition by some local people to the shifting of a religious structure at Brahmarakutlu near B.C. Road has come in the way of the four-lane project on National Highway 48.

Sources in the National Highways Authority of India told The Hindu that the structure measured 10 m x 10 m. While the district administration has not shifted it to another place citing opposition from the local people, the NHAI maintains that it cannot widen a 700-m stretch till the structure is shifted.

“Unless the structure is shifted, the NHAI is constrained to leave the stretch as it is,” an official said. The NHAI was supposed to construct two minor bridges and a toll plaza on this 700-m stretch.

The NHAI is not in favour of a proposal given by the district administration to change the alignment and build two lanes each on either side of the structure. The administration wants to retain the structure on a wider median.

The NHAI, however, contends that such a change would render the stretch a potential accident zone, besides entailing an additional cost of over Rs. 71 lakh, the sources said.

The NHAI wants the structure to be shifted to a another place from the technical, operational, functional, contractual, safety and legal points of view, the source added.

They said that failure to remove the religious structures from public spaces was not in keeping with some recent directions of the Supreme Court. The court has asked the States to frame a policy in this regard. District in-charge Minister J. Krishna Plaemar told The Hindu that it was not proper to change the alignment of the highway at a particular stretch.

“I do not agree with the proposal to change the alignment. The work should be carried out as planned originally,” he said.

The Minister said that the State Government would cooperate with the NHAI to complete the work. “We will make all efforts to ensure that the issue is resolved.” However, the Minister declined to set a time-frame for the purpose.
