Krishnamoorthy K July 1st, 2010, 06:28 AM * Work on several roads exceeds deadline
* Two contractors are said to have written to MCC about their inability to complete the work
* Only five to six contractors in the city do road concreting work: Shashidhar Hegde
* Boards with name and details of contract missing at several sites
MANGALORE: Whenever issues with the concreting of roads are raised, fingers are invariably pointed at contractors. Several problems related to contractors have slowed down the completion of concreting of roads. In one case, a contractor has even gone missing and could not be traced by the Mangalore City Corporation for a whole month.
Chairman of the Standing Committee for Town Planning and Improvement Sudhir Shetty admitted that work on several roads had either exceeded the time given or was nearing the one-year deadline specified in the contract. Stay orders from courts had only added to the problem.
In one case, Sharfuddin Ali, who was allotted the contract for the Airport Road and a stretch of the road near Navbharath Circle, had stopped work for almost a month due to personal problems, said assistant executive engineer K.S. Lingegowda.
He has now resumed work, Mr. Lingegowda claimed, although Mr. Shetty admitted that Sharfuddin Ali was still missing. The Hindu also could not locate the contractor for comments.
Mr. Shetty said that with two roads in the city, the contractors had written to the Mangalore City Corporation admitting that they were unable to complete the work, and new contractors had to be found.
Ward number 17 (Derebail North) councillor Shashidhar Hegde said that there were only five to six contractors in the city who did road concreting work. Problems have also cropped up because the Mangalore City Corporation has floated separate tenders for footpaths, drains, medians, and concreting of roads. Mr. Hegde said that since the margin of profit was low for ancillary works, most contractors were not keen to take them up. “Because of this, people are put to further hardship,” he said. “These works were not even planned before concreting,” she said.
Signboards
On the requirement that contractors have to put up boards stating their names, date of beginning the work, date of completion, the scheme under which funds have been sanctioned among other details,
Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj said that there were government circulars that made it clear that these were mandatory, and the responsibility of ensuring that this practice was followed lay with the local authorities responsible for a particular construction. The Deputy Commissioner said that boards had been displayed by contractors whenever funds had been sanctioned under the Chief Minister's special grant of Rs. 100 crore.
A casual check, however, revealed that this norm was not being followed by most of the contractors. The road connecting Kankanady and Morgan's Gateis one of many that did not display such a board.

engineer.akash July 1st, 2010, 06:58 PM 2.8-km NH stretch likely to be MCC's
Stanley G Pinto, TNN, Jul 1, 2010, 09.46pm IST
MANGALORE: The 2.8-km stretch of the National Highway 48 from Padil Junction to Mahaveer Circle may soon be a corporation road, after four-laning of the road from Padil Junction (NH 48) via Nanthoor Junction (NH 13) is completed.
The State National Highway Division is seriously considering handing it over to the city corporation as the existing stretch will not serve any purpose after the four-laning of the road is completed.
National Highways 17, 48 and 13 are being developed as four-lane by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Meanwhile, there has been a demand for making it a four-lane citing high density of passenger car units (PCU) from Kannur check post to Mahaveer Circle. The State NH Division executive engineer clarified the stretch is not being considered as Padil Junction. The Nanthoor four-lane will take majority of the traffic which was at 52,389 passenger car units (PCU) in 2004.
This reply was obtained by Dinesh Bhat Consumer Protection Forum, Puttur, under Right to Information Act. Bhat says the contention of State NH officials is not tenable as the abstract statement showing the average traffic volume of 2004 road traffic sample survey by Public Works Department, says otherwise.
The abstract shows that almost 16,000 two-wheelers, autos, vans, mini buses and four-wheelers ply between B C Road and Mahaveer Circle, apart from 6,000 two-axle rigid vehicles. "Majority of the two-axle vehicles transport goods to the city," contends Bhat.
The state NH officials say the average traffic volume of 2004 is high as there was a lot of movement of manganese ore trucks, which has now reduced considerably. "It is difficult to say whether the same PCU average exists as of now," the official said.
"Considering this and also as the stretch does not serve our purpose, we are considering writing to the government to transfer this road to the city corporation," the official noted.

Krishnamoorthy K July 1st, 2010, 08:17 PM MANGALORE: A project proposal worth Rs 567 crore has been sent to the Centre for extension of the fisheries port in Mangalore, said DK district in charge minister J Kirshna Palemar.
In a release Palemar who is also minister for ports said the existing fisheries port in the city requires extension of the jetty and other infrastructure facilities keeping in mind the rise in the number of boats anchoring at the port.
The present jetty at the port is 603 meter long and about 1,500 boats of different verities are functioning here. However, this jetty is not sufficient to accommodate all these boats and it had to be extended by 502 meter southwards. Besides, an additional jetty of 579 meter has to be built at Bengre, he said adding that the work will be initiated once the central governments approval was received.
The proposed project also includes the works related to dredging, levelling works, construction of revetment, traffic zone, fish selling premises, restroom for fishermen, ship repair shop, gear shed, radio communication tower, net mending shed, restaurant, RCC sloping hard, public lavatory, drinking water supply, RCC box bridge, rainwater harvesting system etc, he said.

Krishnamoorthy K July 3rd, 2010, 06:38 AM Four entrepreneurs — who have set up their start-up units at the Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (STEP) of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) at Surathkal in Mangalore — have been extended the seed capital support from the Centre's Technology Development Board under the Department of Science and Technology.
Speaking at a function to release the seed capital to the start-ups, Mr P. Suresh Bhat, Director of NITK-STEP, said that in order to develop the eco-system for entrepreneurial development, the Technology Development Board has initiated ‘seed capital support system to startups at incubators.'
In all, seed capital support to the tune of Rs 40 lakh has been approved to four entrepreneurs. Of them, two entrepreneurs belong to IT and ITES sector, he said. The scheme has been operationalised at NITK-STEP by approving seed capital support in the range of Rs 5-10 lakh for each entrepreneur. The first instalment amount was handed over to the four entrepreneurs. Mr Bhat said that the entrepreneurs intending to avail themselves of seed capital support must have a workable business idea that can result as a business plan. The entrepreneur must be prepared to locate his or her start-up unit in the campus of NITK-STEP.
A project management committee will evaluate the business proposal and decide the quantum of seed capital for the start-up.

Forum Mall Construction by prestige group is on full swing. Day & night concrete work is goingon even though its raining heavily. Hundreds of year back there was a pond inside the site, now it is filled but still you can make the difference in green grass in google & nobody knows about this pond. Dispute was going on for the past 5 years for this pond. Mall owner doesn't agree that there was a pond in past. At last they got one witness one very old lady from pandeshwar told she has seen this pond and used to wash her legs. After this dispute mall owner finally agreed to handover this site of 7 cents which was inside the shopping mall site. Now the good news is they have agreed to build the pond & transfer to the temple authority, good work by pristige group. Presently pond work is going on.
Krishnamoorthy K July 5th, 2010, 11:24 AM Which location in Mangalore is suitable for scuba diving?
engineer.akash July 5th, 2010, 11:27 AM Panambur beach I guess...best is StMary's Island Malpe,Udupi.Surathkal would have been fantastic but dangerous enough given its rough waves/rocky structure
Krishnamoorthy K July 6th, 2010, 07:30 AM There are different reasons for scuba diving - recreational diving, cave diving, wreck diving, ice diving, deep diving, military diving, police diving., underwater exploration, offshore construction, etc. Panambur beach may be suitable for wreck diving as lot of ships have submerged recently but generally wreck diving is performed to discover old ships. Also there is need for police diving as these beach is quite dangerous. But what we need is some kind of recreational diving and suitable place will be one where enough marinelife is available like Nethrani island near Murdeshwar. Marine Acquarium Park is coming up near Taneerbhavi. There are a few islands also nearby, not sure whether there is enough marinelife there.
One more thing of interest is bungee jumping. Whether Thaneerbhavi ropeway height (may be a bungee jumping platform on one of towers) is enough for bungee jumping? I think it needs a minimum height of 100 feet.
Krishnamoorthy K July 6th, 2010, 07:32 AM Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj has said that the district administration will introduce the Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitor the movement of vehicles to check violations.
Addressing a press conference at the Deputy Commissioner’s Officer here on Saturday, the DC said that private buses and trucks, which carry sand, should compulsorily install GPS equipment in it. “People complain about public transportation system frequently that buses do not follow the rules. District administration would check overspeed, route diversion and other violations through GPS. Similarly, illegal transportation of sand also can be checked with the installation of GPS. The GPS will record all details including speed, location and direction of vehicles. Based on the GPS data, the authorities can take action against the violators,” he added.
The matter was already discussed with the office-bearers of Bus Owners’ Association and Sand Transporters Association. Both bus owners as well as sand transporters have agreed to equip their vehicles with GPS, he said adding that four companies have come forward to supply GPS equipments and the installation process will begin by the end of July.
DC’s warning
The district administration will give six months time for the bus owners to install GPS. Action will be taken against bus owners, if GPS was not installed even after six months, he warned adding that the police as well as Regional Transport Authority officials will have the control over GPS.
Illegal sand mining
The DC said that sand is being transported illegally from Nethravathi and Gurupur river beds. Only 40 contractors have the licence to mine sand in the district. Sand is being transported to Kerala illegally since sand mining is completely banned there. While the rate of sand per truck in Karnataka is only Rs 2,000, it is being sold at Kerala for Rs 30,000. Hence, the contractors are engaged in illegal transportation of sand, he said adding that the authorities can check the violation through GPS.

Krishnamoorthy K July 6th, 2010, 07:33 AM MANGALORE: City, mofussil and express buses operating from Mangalore will be fitted with global positioning system (GPS) devise by end of this month. This follows the decision taken at a meeting of DK district administration and bus operators associations' here last week. The administration has left the choice of GPS devise and the competent service provider to the bus operators and would not get directly involved in this issue.
Deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj told reporters that the administration has tagged three to four GPS instrument and service providers to the operators. "We are not directly in to the business of mediating on behalf of these providers," the DC said, adding it is up to the bus operators to negotiate with them and settle for one provider. "The operators cannot pick and choose from among the service providers and have to settle for one," he said.
The control room for the GPS units will be with the police and the regional transport authority, the DC said, adding that the resultant data from the GPS will be used specifically to monitor movement of buses for the first three to six month. "We will move to enforcement mode after the initial familiarisation period with the GPS is over," the DC said, adding that this move will benefit the bus owners more than anyone else.
It is a known fact that most bus operators do not have any control over their drivers and conductors and the presence of single bus owners only worsens this problem, the DC said. With GPS installed, the bus owners will regain control over the manner in which buses function, he said adding that this system will come in to effect from August 1. The data from GPS is also admissible by way of evidence in courts and a useful tool, he said.
The average unit cost will be around Rs 12,000. The operators will incur a recurring monthly cost of around Rs 200 for the SIM used as part of the GPS. This will enable the enforcement agencies to track the exact route taken by a bus, speed and time taken for a trip. It will also help the enforcement agencies to keep tabs on random stops made by the buses ostensibly to pick up passengers as well stops made by them at road junctions.
Noting that P Hemalatha, his counterpart in neighbouring Udupi district too has taken a similar initiative, Ponnuraj said this would ensure that buses operating in these two districts would be fitted with GPS and the system would be uniformly implemented. M Muthuraya, DCP (Crime and Traffic) said policemen already have training in handling GPS equipment and necessary training will be provided to the newcomers.

Krishnamoorthy K July 6th, 2010, 07:37 AM MANGALORE: Mangalore City Corporation is taking a major step to reduce its power bill, which is estimated at Rs 17.5 crore per annum. The civic body incurs expenditure on power for streetlights, water supply and treatment plants, and sewage treatment plants. It has taken up energy audit and savings for these areas as priority, and will roll out energy conservation plan for them starting with streetlights along city's major thoroughfare.
MCC on a pilot basis has selected streetlights on the stretch from PVS junction to Lady Hill under the plan as far as streetlights are concerned. Technological solution provided by SMS Technology, Bangalore will ensure that alternate streetlights on this stretch glow after 10 pm, and lights are switched on and off at pre-determined time, without human intervention. The success of this experiment will determine its replication elsewhere.
K N Vijayaprakash, commissioner, MCC told TOI that street lighting system across the city could change if the above project yielded desired results. "We will replace sodium vapour lamps with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), and even switch over to light emitting diodes (LED)," he said, adding the LED option, although entails one time heavy investment, consumes around 50 per cent less power that traditional lighting solutions.
Another area that the corporation has paid attention to is replacing its pumps at Thumbay water pumping station. "These pumps too are energy efficient and will enable us to bring down our power consumption," Vijayaprakash said. Sewage treatment plants too consume lot of energy, and efforts are on to make them power self-reliant by utilising the methane gas generated there for power production and also commercially exploiting the sludge.
The sludge left over after treating the sewage is good manure and even this too can be exploited commercially. Low cost technology is available to convert the methane generated in to power and this can help in considerably reducing the power cost at the STP, he said adding that efforts are on to woo interested firms, who have the expertise in this area. There is scope to commercially exploit excess methane available, he noted.
Efforts are underway to get special purpose vehicle (SPV) mooted with Mangalore SEZ Ltd for maintenance of STPs, functional. The civic body incurs annual maintenance cost of Rs 30 lakh on a STP, he said, adding MCC will push for early operationalisation of the SPV at its board of directors meeting to be held on July 6. It is too early to quantify overall savings these steps would bring, but the same should be substantial, he noted.

Shopping mall and shopping complex seems to be one and the same as long as there are many shops and there is a good walkable corridor to walk from one shop to another.
Mall in general, apart from shops, may contain restaurants, entertainment areas and halls like cinema halls, wedding halls, etc? And shopping mall may contain only shops?
avi mangalore July 7th, 2010, 02:36 PM mall culture came to india only in early 2000, before that malls wer called shopping arcades or complex's that dint match with their american counterparts, its only now that we hav worldclass malls in india.
a mall can b truly classified with a building having large area, retail shops, theater, amusements, foodcourts, etc , escalators ,infact in india that malls hav mushroomed rapidly and become quite famous with people , as a result developers now like to call their small complex malls even thou they are not full fledged malls for eg take diamond mall building in kottara, it has only one showroom furniture and developers have named it a mall - its like when u add a mall tag to a building rather than complex or arcade u try to stand outin the crowd, in mangalore piomall, time squares, zone -1 cant b called malls in fact they dont even hav escalators and they are small buildings, and these building also accomodate offices which is not so in the case of a true mall
avi mangalore July 7th, 2010, 02:47 PM saibeen complex was a shopping arcade and it is still an shopping arcade, it was opened in the early 90 and surely brought a change to shopping in mangalore in those days, before bharat malls or empire existed, saibeen was on the list of familes who would go for an sunday outing other than beaches , parks etc, also a very popular hangout for college boys, its popular stores wer burma buzzar, hangyo outlet, mischief, fashion paradise, fancyhut ,etc , truly a landmark which revolutionised shopping in mangalore
avi mangalore July 7th, 2010, 02:52 PM anyways now the city has citicenter, bharath mall, empire, in another 3 yrs plama mall (one of the biggest in southindia), forum mall to join the league of malls in mangalore

Krishnamoorthy K July 8th, 2010, 02:58 PM Mangalore: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) seems to be paving the way for an eco-disaster on NH-17 which runs parallel to the Western Ghats.
From August, it will axe about 16,000 trees, some of them over 100 years old, along the picturesque two-lane roadway between Thalapady (18 km towards Kerala from Mangalore) and Kundapur (35 km from Udupi) to make it a four-lane stretch.
Forest department officials said this would be the biggest casualty to the environment in recent decades.
The NHAI has contracted a private lumbering company to cut the trees and transport them to various saw mills. It has also paid the forest department the fees to compensate for the loss to ecology.
The forest department collects Rs800 for every tree lost and Rs94,000 per kilometre to take up afforestation programme to compensate for the loss.
Both the NHAI (or any company undertaking its work) and the lumbering company have to sign an agreement with the forest department to plant two saplings for every tree lost on the stretch and arrange to water them during arid season.
“The lumbering company and the NHAI have already deposited the required fees,” Vijayakumar, district forest office of the Mangalore range, said. “The tree felling may start in August,” he said.
“A high court order passed in 2003 states that the forest department has the power to take such an undertaking from the companies and also collect the fees. Compensatory afforestation is the responsibility of the forest department; it is mandatory to make up for the losses suffered by ecology,” Vijayakumar said.
“The loss to environment has to be compensated adequately and in time.”
“The National Highway–17 connecting will see tremendous growth of traffic as Mangalore will be the second engine of growth for the state in the next five years,” state minister for environment and ecology J Krishna Palemar said.
“But ecology and greenery in the area are also one of the greatest assets of the state and one of its biggest lung spaces. I have directed civic bodies in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada (Karwar) to strictly monitor the tree felling and mark for cutting only those trees that are absolutely necessary for widening the highway,” he said.
NHAI officials said a Hyderabad-based consortium has been given the contract to develop the 120-km stretch between Thalapady and Kundapur.

Vanamhotsava approaches- Mangalore has no place to plant trees (http://mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=broadcast&broadcastid=186686)
Ever since the mad rush to concretize the roads has begun in the city the planners have been eating into the roadside space for widening, as a result many trees have fell during the last five years. Even the all powerful district in charge minister Mr. Krishna Palemar was not able to stop the carnage of trees in the city despite him being the state minister for environment and ecology.
We need good footpath. Walking and travelling by mass transportation is good for environment. One main reason for avoiding mass transportation system is unwalkable footpaths.
There are a few location where trees can still be planted. On KSRTC-Kuntikana road enough space is available between planned footpath and road for parking vehicles. The trees can be planted in between spaces marked for vehicles. Similarly on Ladyhill-Kotarachowki road parking space provide is never used for parking and the whole space could be developed as a mini garden with trees. Similarly we have to identify more locations. Only problem in some locations is from electrical cables. Anybody any other ideas?

premkudva July 9th, 2010, 11:52 AM saibeen complex was a shopping arcade and it is still an shopping arcade, it was opened in the early 90 and surely brought a change to shopping in mangalore in those days, ...which revolutionised shopping in mangalore
Saibeen followed the mall format even in those days. Space was only leased out, not sold, they had a super market, a central court area, annual entertainment programmes and so on.
Even today Saibeen is fully functional, still drawing people. I would have thought it would go empty. Instead shops at Empire Mall keep closing at regular intervals. Many shops at Bharat Mall have yet to be sold/occupied.

engineer.akash July 10th, 2010, 01:03 AM Hyatt Hotels to expand in 15 Indian cities over next five years
Updated On: 4/9/2010
Hyatt Hotels has announced that it will set up more than 120 properties in India over the next decade, as part of its extensive expansion in India. Hyatt Hotels will expand into 15 new Indian markets including Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune over the next five years. In addition, the company will open Hyatt Regency Pune, Hyatt Regency Chennai, and Grand Hyatt Goa in 2010. The company has also outlined growth plans in cities like Delhi, Goa, Kolkata and Mumbai.
Mark Hoplamazian, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hyatt Hotels Corporation said, “We believe India represents one of the greatest hotel markets over the next decade — one that will play a key role in driving Hyatt’s long-term growth.” Approximately one-fourth of Hyatt’s global pipeline of more than 120 properties is earmarked for India, for which the company has committed additional capital as it plans to undertake selected developments with its Indian partners. Hyatt Hotels has also chosen India as the first location outside the US to set up its service brand ‘Hyatt Place’ in cities such as Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Indore, Lucknow, Mangalore, Mundra and Mysore.
Additionally, full service hotels under the Hyatt Regency — Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt — are currently under development. As part of its expansion, Hyatt Hotels will also add 10,000 associates to its current pool of more than 3,500 employees across India. Within the next five years Hyatt Regency hotels will come up in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru (Koramangala and Jakkur), Chennai, Hyderabad, Navi Mumbai and Vishakhapatnam. Meanwhile, Grand Hyatt hotels will come up in Pune and selected other markets, while Park Hyatt hotels in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Any updates from Mangalore side??No info from Mysore end.
visnaya July 10th, 2010, 08:57 AM Friends,
We heard a lot about Infra and other projects in mangalore may it be highway development, concrate road, Bypass road, Port improvement, Ropeway, fisherish port, Apartments, villas, water and sewage project, garbage cleaning etc.
But do we have any throught process or data on Job market perspective. Unless this improves there are no people to use these. why i am asking is whom so ever i meet in mangalore are not staying mangalore( either they are gulf, USA, mumbai, bangalore etc). The people who have their business in mangalore are not doing good because of competion.
so can any body answer following Questions :
1. What are the jobs available in mangalore?? like IT, BT, Banking, college, heavey industy etc
2. Any numbers ( like bangalore has 6 lcas IT jobs and 6 lacs textile and apparal employee)
3. what are the highest paid jobs in mangalore and any figures( like teaching doctors, real estate etc)??
4. Which area investment are happening and going to create jobs
5. How we can contribute to improve on this like making plans and contacting people who can work towards this( like contacting NRM( Non resisdent mangalorean business people), Govement( by suggesting the plans in food processing, petro, IT, BT etc) and otehr business big wigs, contacting Canara chambers of commerce etc)
You can add more Questions to this and answer with data. Lets do this for a week or so.

As I am not in Mangalore I am not familiar with ground realities as far as business is concerned. As per reports MSEZ phase 1 with its various industries stands a big hope for future jobs. The recession has slowed things to a large extent be it in ITor retail sectors.Good to see the BRIC countries pick up. IT SEZ at Mudipu also offers a huge hope.I think these are the two real big projects. Ganjimatt should have been operational by now but somehow work has slowed.Another sector is tourism. For this we need private sector and the Malaysian consortium which is willing to invest stands another hope.

Krishnamoorthy K July 12th, 2010, 04:54 AM A Rs 100 crore draft plan is ready to take up works on footpaths and drains, informed District-in-Charge Minister Krishna J Palemar.
Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, he said the works on the same will begin after the monsoon. “Already a sum of Rs 100 crore has been spent on construction of concrete roads in Mangalore,” he informed.
Sea erosion
The work on the construction of sea wall to prevent sea erosion too will begin after the monsoon, he said and added that out of the Rs 911 crore venture for steps to prevent sea erosion, a sum of Rs 223 crore (15%) will be borne by the State government while the remaining 85 per cent will be borne by Centre (ADB). “The first phase of the works would begin in Ullal,” he said. Statting that already works on about 1,890 metres of sea walls is under progress in many areas of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts that include Honnavar and Kumta, Palemar said a sum of Rs 16.3 crore has already been spent.
Water contamination
Stating that about 58 per cent of borewells/open wells in Bangalore are contaminated, Palemar said that his department will conduct a survey soon to check the contamination of water in Mangalore too. To a query on the recent report that Mangalore is one of the top polluted cities in India, he said that upon verification it was found that the surveyors had picked Baikampady area only and reported that Mangalore was polluted instead of specifically mentioning that Baikampady area was selected for the survey.

Krishnamoorthy K July 12th, 2010, 04:56 AM * ‘Rs. 16 crore allocated for Mangalore
* Junction-Panambur railway project'
* Completion of the project is expected to help the economic development of the region
MANGALORE: Southern Railway has spent only Rs. 43.78 lakh of the allocated Rs. 15 crore during 2009-10 for doubling the railway line between Mangalore Junction (Kanakandy) and Panambur.
Besides bringing down the journey time between Surathkal and the city, the project, when completed, was expected to boost economic activity of the region with New Mangalore Port being located close to this line.
The information regarding under utilisation of funds allocated was provided to the Puttur-based Railway Yathrikara Sangha by the Railways, in response to an application filed under the Right to Information Act.
The Southern Railway's reply, sent to the sangha's convenor Dinesh K. Bhat, said, “Some of the civil works like earthwork …started between 18th km and 19th km and excavation of minor bridge no. 33 were taken up” and that the total amount utilised for them was Rs. 43.78 lakh.
It also said that the Railways had allocated Rs. 10 crore for the project during Rs. 2010-11 and that the doubling would need an estimated Rs. 147 crore for completion.
To a question on whether it had received any representation from members of Parliament from Karnataka regarding this project, the Railways replied in the negative.
Mr. Bhat, who had sent a copy of the letter he received from the Southern Railway in response to his RTI application to the President of Canara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Srinivas S. Kamath, urged him to take appropriate steps so that people' representatives and Union Government responded to the aspirations of the people in this regard.
Pointing out that this section of the railways had been yielding high revenue to the Southern Railway, Mr. Bhat said that the track doubling would augur well for the development of the region. When the project gets completed, a new railway station would come up at Jokatte, close to the Mangalore Airport, he said. Besides, the journey time between Surathkal and Mangalore would also come down, he added.

Yes, I had mentioned about it few weeks back -
Srinivas Integrated Campus is the latest addition to the Srinivas Group of Colleges in the year 2009 and the first Integrated Campus in Karnataka State approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. At present the Srinivas Integrated Campus, Mukka will have three constituent Institutions;
Srinivas School of Engineering
Srinivas School of Business
Srinivas School of Management
and will offer courses in Engineering and Business Management.
The campus is located at Mukka, Surathkal about 20 km from the heart of the city of Mangalore along the NH 17 towards the temple city of Udupi. The campus has been established in a lush green environment and spreads over 50 acres of land with modern infrastructural facilities.

Addressing mediapersons, M&ML Vice-President (Customer Care, Automotive Sector) Sanjoy Gupta, said that the company will offer training and infrastructural support to the institute, thereby scaling its students’ employability in the automobile industry.”
“All students, who complete the course from the institute, will be given job,” he assured.
M&ML has decided to initiate a manpower development programme in partnership with some of the country’s most reputed automobile training institutes. The tie-up with SJITC is a significant step in the same direction.
The Company will support selected institutes in upgrading their training infrastructure, providing necessary training to the faculty and enhancing the employability of students, Gupta said.
It will also provide the institutes with cross sections of aggregates, aggregates related to overhaul and repair, sub assemblies and other components as per the latest technologies, he added.

Even I agree with this concept. Related to this we had floated lot of idea some months back. We should remove the central dependancy of state bank bus stand. at the same time should not creat another statebank at pumpwell.
Hence TTMC are the best suited. we should have atleast at 10 places.

Thokot recently got a new busstand with commercial complex through ADB funds. Its has enough land and the preset building can altered to make a good TTMC.
There is a need of building busstand for intercity-long distance buses at talapady-beeri, kannur-adyar and suratkal-muka area as this ll be near to proposed bypass road and its a good junction
Krishnamoorthy K July 14th, 2010, 05:30 AM MANGALORE: In response to Public Eye of June 30 on the problems caused to people by ill-planned concrete roads, Varsha V. Shenoy of Kadri Kambla Road, Bejai, says, “As The Hindu rightly pointed out, the Mangalore City Corporation and the Government, in their over-enthusiasm to concrete and expand roads, have failed to rebuild the drainage system with the same zeal. .”
K.R. Kamath of Kadri says, “The system of not giving monetary compensation for land acquired and only issuing TDR (Transferrable Development Rights) certificates may not be acceptable to all.”
Harish Murari of Kottara says, “Civic works are taken up with tax payers' money and this places vicarious responsibility on the part of the corporation to ensure safety of Mangalore citizens and provide adequate compensation for lapses. ” Shaila S. Shenoy of Kadri says, “In the flurry of concreting activity all over Mangalore city, what has been conspicuously ignored is the need to green the environment. .”
Varsha S. Shenoy of Kadri says, “Raising the height of newly laid concrete roads may have made the contractor's job easier but the residents on either side of roads have been put to lot of inconvenience.”
Sunil P. Shenoy, Consulting Urologist, A J Hospital & Research Centre, says, “Contractors keep no warning signs at the edges of deep gutters and pits. Are there no checks by the civic body? ”
The Hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2010/07/14/stories/2010071462990300.htm)
I was thinking that road height is raised to save road from erosion due to flow of rain water. Anyway lot need to be done on drainage and as somebody is suggested it is better to construct drainage and footpath first.
And steep gradient ramps on footpaths have to be done away with. All illegal construction of steps and ramps on footpath need to be removed. I have seen in a lot of places on newly laid concrete roads steps to private homes or buildings are built on footpath itself by the road contractors; the road contractors are doing favour to house or building owners at the cost of pedestrians.

visnaya July 14th, 2010, 08:24 AM Malnad and karavali region has lot of streams which will fall from hill down wards, why can't government may it be PPP or self sponser think of making use of this. if we just go in shiradi ghat we see at least 200 streams falling from high altitude.
MANGALORE: Several families have been provided electricity using small hydro-turbines, which are available through government schemes.
More than 50 houses in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have been lit up with the help of small hydro-turbines that require no maintenance.
“Because we live within the Kudremukh National Park, it was impossible for us to dream of electricity,” says Puttanna Malekudiya of Navoor village in Belthangady. “Because of this machine, I have power in my house,” he added.
About six years ago, Puttanna says, he saw a newspaper advertisement about small hydroelectricity projects for households placed by Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. He and two neighbours — both Malekudiyas — were couriered the devices in 2008, around two years after they applied for it. They had to bear the cost of installing the water pipeline, the electrical wiring, and the Rs. 25,000 transportation cost.
The hydro-turbine installed in Mr. Puttanna's land generates 1 KW, which is enough to power several light bulbs, an iron, a grinder and a television set. “Unlike big dams, there is no destruction of forests and nothing is wasted. I use the water that passes through the device to irrigate my crops.” he said.
Ravi Malekudiya of Alamba, Naravi in Belthangady taluk was so convinced about the utility of the device that he too applied for it a year ago. “I had to borrow some money, but it is all right. I wanted to have electricity for my house,” he said.
The device installed in Mr. Ravi's land supplies power to six bulbs in his house and his older brother's house, which is nearby. Mr. Ravi has diverted some water from a stream that flows down the hill on which his house stands. After the water passes through the turbine, it is let back into the stream.
“We carry out a survey of the land and the availability of water and prepare a report, based on which the turbine is manufactured,” said Mr. Ravi S. Chief Executive Officer of Nisarga Environment Technologies (NET), Shimoga. The Union Government provides subsidy for these projects through Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. The total cost of the machine and installation is Rs. 1.5 lakh.

Rumour was that it was coming in Bejai. In that large empty spot on the left while driving to Bejai church junction from KSRTC, after the minor bridge. They have several acres of land there. It was filled a few years ago and is currently fenced off and idle. Nothing further has been heard thereafter.

engineer.akash July 15th, 2010, 03:53 PM M R Vasudeva takes charge as Mangalore Airport Director
'NITB to be operational by July 25' Mangalore: July 14, DHNS:
The New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) which was formally inaugurated on May 15, 2010, by Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, will be operational before July 25 or latest by July 30, said M R Vasudeva, who took charge as the Mangalore Airport Director on July 14.
Vasudeva had served as the Mangalore Airport Director for 7 years between April 10, 2002 and March 23, 2009, before he was transferred to Coimbatore as the Airport Director.
Speaking to media persons soon after taking charge from Peter Abraham in the Aiport, he said he will soon convene a meeting of all airlines representatives, regulating agencies like customs and other persons concerned, to discuss problems, if any, before moving to the NITB.
To a query on the approach road to the NITB, he said that the Airport has already written to the authorities concerned and it would not hamper the operations. To another query on the non-availability of NOC for the NITB from the Fire Department, he said steps have already been taken to rectify the suggestions given by the Fire Department and the NITB will soon get the same. “All problems will be resolved before moving to the NITB,” he asserted.
Flying club in M’lore
Stating that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has plans to start flying club in the old airport (existing) premises, Vasudeva said the AAI has many plans that includes utilisation of the same for cargo services.
Runway expansion
The process of extending the new runway by 1,000 feet will commence soon, but the existing runway is very safe for the aircraft arriving at Mangalore airport which include Boing 737-800, Airbus 320 and Airbus 321, he reiterated. “The expansion of runway will help land bigger aircraft like Airbus 300 and Airbus 310,” he said.
Rise in passengers
Interestingly, the number of passengers have been on the rise when compared to last year, thus proving that the aircrash had little impact on the flight passengers. “Its a false allegation that there is a decline in number of air passengers after the aircrash,” he said and gave figures.
“As many as 63,660 passengers travelled through Mangalore airport in June 2010 against 56,863 passengers who travelled in June 2009.” The number of passengers travelled this year is much more than last year in spite of the fact that several aircraft did not land in Mangalore or were diverted to Calicut, Bangalore or Mumbai due to bad weather in the month of June. Apart from an average of over 10,000 aircraft movements per year, more than 30,000 aircraft per annum fly over Mangalore to various destinations following which Mangalore airport is also the Area Control Centre for Radar Services, Vasudeva informed.
Meanwhile, Peter Abraham, who took charge as the Mangalore Airport Director on December 29, 2009, went on long leave soon after he handed over the charge to M R Vasudeva on Wednesday. He too continues to be the Airport Director, but Vasudeva will head the operations.

Krishnamoorthy K July 17th, 2010, 04:36 AM MANGALORE: With a view to develop coastal infrastructure for the future, the Coastal Development Authority has embarked on three ambitious projects totalling Rs 1,800 crore. The feasibility study of these projects is being undertaken and the reports will be handed over to the government for approval.
B Nagaraj Shetty, chairman of the Authority told reporters here on Friday that the three projects include 38.1 km circular ring road Mangala Corniche estimated at Rs 700 crore, the four laning of 70 km state highway 67 from Bajpe to Athradi, via Mangalore-Belman-Udupi estimated at Rs 200 crore and concreting 300 km of fisheries road running parallel to NH 17 from DK to Uttara Kannada at a cost of Rs 900 crore.
The concrete fisheries road, Shetty said will not only help fishermen to move their catch easily, but the road will also help in tapping tourism potential of the district. Regarding the Bajpe-Athradi Road, Shetty said the four-laning will help link the Bajpe airport to Udupi-Manipal and Uttara Kannada, thus eliminate the need for another airport.
Shetty said the feasibility reports for all these three projects were being prepared and they will be submitted to the government for approval, on receipt.
Shetty said in order to provide a hygienic environment to fisher women engaged in selling fish, the Authority had planned to construct 20 modern fish markets with all amenities with assistance from national fisheries development board. The cost of this project is about Rs 10 crore. In this new fish market, each fish seller will have her individual space to stock fish. The market will have toilets, bathrooms, changing / mess rooms. There will be sloping floors so that the water drains properly. He expected this project to benefit at least two lakh fish sellers and 60,000 women. In the first phase, 11 markets and rest in the later phase. There will be two fish markets in the city corporation limits, one at Jeppu and another at Alake, costing totally Rs 161 lakh.
Shetty said the Authority will energise hamlets through solar power. In this scheme, five hamlets in each of the three district coastal district will be provided with solar lighting. He said Mescom has been entrusted with the task of identifying these villages and provide solar power in three months.

Roadworks: four agencies to prepare feasibility report (http://www.hindu.com/2010/07/17/stories/2010071762130300.htm)
MANGALORE: The Karnataka Coastal Development Authority (KCDA) has chosen two agencies for preparing a feasibility report on upgrading a 72-km stretch of State Highway 67 between Bajpe in Dakshina Kannada and Atrady in Udupi district into a four-lane one.
In addition, two more agencies have been chosen for preparing a feasibility report on concreting 407 km of fisheries roads between Talapady in Dakshina Kannada and Majali in Uttara Kannada.
CDA moots Bajpe-Athrady four-lane expressway (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/81807/cda-moots-bajpe-athrady-four.html)
Even as the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is constructing a four-lane highway between Talapady and Kundapur, the Coastal Development Authority (CDA) has suggested a proposal to construct a four-lane expressway between Bajpe airport and Athrady in Manipal.
The expressway starting at Bajpe would pass through Kateel, Moorukaveri, Mundkur, Belman, Shirva and Moodubelle to reach Athradi in Manipal.
Giving details about the same at a press conference in CDA office here on Friday, CDA Chairman B Nagaraj Shetty said the project to be envisaged at a cost of Rs 200 crore will ease the traffic on NH-17. “A number of NRIs hail from Belman, Shirva and Moodubelle.
Besides, a number of students study in Manipal university and other institutions in Udupi district,” he said and added that the expressway will be a boon for several people who arrive at airport from various destinations around the world.
The tenders to conduct feasibilty survey have already been awarded. While the 34-km stretch that comes under Dakshina Kannada district PWD has been awarded to Millennium Global Surveyors in Mangalore at a cost of Rs 13,09,238, the 38 kms stretch that comes under Udupi PWD has been awarded to Mappa in Bangalore at a cost of Rs 15,39,000. “The terms of references are in the final stages and an agreement will be signed with the firms within a month to conduct the feasibility survey,” he said and added that the feasibility report will be submitted to the government within six months after signing the agreement.
Stating that there are bottlenecks at Bajpe, Kateel, Moorukaveri, Mundkur, Belman, Shirva Masjid junction and Moodubelle areas, Shetty said that suitable alternative routes have to be identified.
Fisheries road
Giving details about another major project, that is, development of fisheries concrete road parallel to NH-17 in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts, Nagaraj Shetty said the 325 km long proposed road with an estimated project cost of Rs 900 crore will not only help fisherfolk to quickly transport their catch, but will also help ease traffic on NH-17. “There is a strong need for a parallel road to minimise traffic on NH-17 and Fisheries Road could be best possible alternative,” he opined.
Millennium Global Surveyors have been awarded the tender (estimated cost Rs 67,86,085) to conduct feasibility survey between Mangalore and Baindoor (257 kms) while Design Consortium in Bangalore been received the tender (estimated cost Rs 53,25,000) to conduct survey in Udupi. The terms of reference are in final stages and an agreement will be signment within a month. Both the firms will get a six months time to submit the report, he informed.
Soubhagya Sanjeevini
Yet another project proposed by CDA is “Soubhagya Sanjeevini” wherein the excess water of 14 rivers flowing in three coastal districts (except Payaswini to avoid any possible controversies as it flows to Kerala) will be utilised for drinking, agriculture and industrial purposes. Clarifying that the project is not diversion of river, he said only the excess water from the rivers will be used through pipes to reach the designated areas to make good use of it. “A detailed study of the same will be conducted by a high power committee in two months in which Home Minister, A G Kodgi and former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu will be involved,” Shetty said.
The other projects proposed by the CDA include solar lighting system to five remote villages in the three coastal districts, organising a seminar on “Vision for next 25 to 30 years on planning / development” in September and construction of a building for CDA at Urwa at a cost of Rs 2 crore.
CDA Secretary K Prabhakar Rao, Members Gujjadi Prabhakar Nayak and Sulochana, Manager Praveen Nayak and Adviser Bhasker Shetty among others were present.

Krishnamoorthy K July 18th, 2010, 06:34 AM * One lakh trees to be planted in city in three years
* MCC has released Rs. 8 lakh for the project
* Twenty varieties of trees to be grown
ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN:Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, planting a sapling at Nehru Maidan in Mangalore on Saturday.
MANGALORE: About one lakh trees will be planted in and around Mangalore in three years in a bid to give the city a greener look, said District Forest Officer (DFO) Vijayakumar during the celebrations of ‘Vanamahotsava' (Afforestation Day) organised by his department in association with the Mangalore City Corporation at Nehru Maidan here on Saturday.
He said 20,000 trees would be planted this year and the rest would be planted during 2011-12 and 2012-13.
Mr. Vijayakumar said that about 20 varieties of fruit-bearing, flowering and shade-giving trees would be grown in the city. The corporation had released about Rs. 8 lakh for greening Mangalore. But this would not be sufficient to meet the entire cost. Help from private firms, non-governmental organisations and the pubic would be sought. Already a firm in the gold and diamond jewellery business had come forward to partner with the Department of Forest in this regard, he said.
Stating that a few individuals too had come forward to plant and protect trees, Mr. Vijayakumar said that the number of such enthusiasts might increase in the days to come. Earlier, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, inaugurated the Vanamahotsava celebrations by planting a sapling. A row of new plants were planted on one side of the huge ground shortly after the guests left the place. Workers provided tree-guards to the flowering plants, which had already grown to about five feet. Mr. Kateel said that planting of trees was welcome considering the way “unwanted” industries were being allowed to come up in Dakshina Kannada. It was also important in the background of global warming. More efforts were needed to green the city, he added. Chairman of the Karnataka Coastal Development Authority B. Nagaraja Shetty and MLA N. Yogish Bhat were among those present. A formal function was held later at the Town Hall to mark the occasion.

The students of Presidency School will take a pledge on Wednesday to take a green turn and hence do their bit to preserve planet earth by planting 400 saplings and taking care of them thereafter.
This unique ‘Go Green’ movement will be achieved under the guidance of forest department and environment enthusiast Jeeth Milan Roche and his team. The specialty of this campaign is each sapling will be identified by the name of the student who will take care of it. Hence this will encourage students to be the guardian of their plants which will ensure more responsibility and love towards nature and surroundings, states a press release. This event will be held on July 14 at the Presidency School premises at Kelarai at 11 am. It will be inaugurated by Forest Range Officer Clifford Lobo, informed Principal Usha Rao in the press release.
Krishnamoorthy K July 18th, 2010, 08:33 AM MANGALORE: The Karnataka Coastal Development Authority will ask the State Infrastructure Development Department (IDD) to prepare a feasibility report on laying a 32-km-long ring road called “Mangala Corniche” in the city, according to its chairman B. Nagaraja Shetty.
Addressing presspersons here on Friday he said that in June 2009, the IDD had conducted a pre-feasibility study on laying a 12-km ring road. Laying the ring road will cost about Rs. 700 crore. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had promised to release Rs. 5.18 crore for preparing the feasibility report for the 32-km road, he said.
Five phases
Mr. Shetty said that according to the plan, the 100-ft wide ring road would be laid in five phases. The first phase would be a 12-km stretch from Ullal bridge to Kuloor bridge on the banks of Gurupur river. The second phase from Kuloor bridge to Maravoor bridge would 5.8 km long.
The other phases would be from Maravoor bridge to Gurupur bridge (6.3 km), Gurupur bridge to Kannur (7.5 km) and Kannur to Ullal bridge (6.5 km), he said.

Our Bureau
Mumbai, July 17
Godrej Properties Ltd intends to launch mid-income housing development projects in Chennai, Mangalore, Kochi and Mumbai.
Tier-II cities
Although the company will primarily focus on the ten major cities, it is also looking at entering tier-II cities such as Mangalore and Kochi, said Mr Adi Godrej, Chairman of the company, at its first Annual General Meeting after it went public and listed last year. GPL now has 82 million square feet of area under various stages of development in ten major cities.
In Mumbai, GPL is developing a 36.5-acre site at Vikhroli and has in place several MOUs for development of sites in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mohali, adding up to 185 acres.
Growth opportunities
Explaining why it took the company 25 years to enter the capital market, Mr Godrej said, “We thought it much better to go public at a time when we are building the company. We see explosive growth opportunities in the future and need the capital for building the company further.”
Meeting demand
The high prices in the realty sector are a function of low supply, rather than just high demand; this demand should be met by increasing volumes, he added.

Mr. Singh said that henceforth regular interactions would be held between the police and identified groups. He said that so far the police had identified 16 groups such as senior citizens, security agencies and autorickshaw drivers. Their suggestions would be sought on improving police services as well as understanding their problems. The Commissioner said that the police planned to familiarise students with the functioning of police stations. Mr. Singh said that the police sub-divisions under the Police Commissionerate would be reorganised as south, central and north. They would be headed by three assistant commissioners of police. Krishnamoorthy K July 20th, 2010, 06:57 PM Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd, (MRPL) an ONGC group company and a mini ratna, had launched its Phase III Expansion cum upgradation project, at a budget of Rs.15000 Crore, to expand the refining capacity by an additional 3 MMTPA ( Million Metric Tonnes per Annum) and to produce superior-end products that is the need of the hour for the emerging environment and market norms. The target for mechanical completion is October 2011.
Levelling of Patro family land is pending for the past one year and since it is under dispute and Shri Gregory Patrao is yet to vacate the premises, the loss incurred has been around Rs.600 Crore so far, in addition to the loss to the exchequer. Besides the entire Phase III Project itself, which is the Nation’s requirement, is getting set back.
During the acquisition of land for Phase III, all project displaced families had willingly handed over their land, considering the larger cause of the Nation’s progress. And since all of the site surrounding the Patrao family land has been acquired, MRPL had proceeded with the Project work and has already achieved 46% progress and as on 31.5.10, MRPL has already committed an amount of Rs.9638 Crore.
It is a matter of concern that the Project cannot be commissioned in its totality without the Patrao family land and non availability of the same, in time, could severely affect the project completion and may have a further huge impact on the overall financials of the Project.

The programme is called the ‘Sampoorna Swachatha Andholan,’ widely publicised as a huge success in the district. Unfortunately what lies behind the fake success story is an episode of eye wash, manipulation and a series of acrobatics staged by the local governing bodies before the inspection committees to win the award.
After, all the 203 GPs and three blocks in Dakshina Kannada district won the Nirmal Gram Puraskar, Zilla Panchayat, which has now come to realise its failure, is introspecting as to where it went wrong in implementing the campaign. In the process of introspection, the ZP has confronted a disappointing fact that hundreds of houses in every Gram Panchayat still do not have toilets, despite the award. This indigestible fact has not just raised doubts over functioning of the local governing bodies but has also questioned the credibility of the process in which the awards are given to the Gram Panchayats.
Zilla Panchayat, as a fault finding attempt and to ascertain the post Nirmal Gram Puraskar scenario, asked the Anganwadi workers and Stree Shakti Groups to hold survey in all the 203 Gram Panchayats and get the details of houses which do not have toilets yet.
Though the report is expected to be out by 15 days, anganwadi workers who have been out on the field for survey informed Deccan Herald that the number of houses which do not have toilets are mind boggling.
According to them, Bantwal taluk, which is one of the blocks, which has bagged the award has Sarapady GP where 330 houses do not have toilets. Uli has 300 houses without toilets followed by Pajir with 250 and Kadeshwalya with 225 houses without toilets.
In award winning block Puttur, Kaniyur GP has no toilet in 220 houses, Belandur with 194 houses without toilets, Kodimbadi with 74, Ariyadka with 101, Kedambadi with 204, Uppinangady with 58, Pejathur with 82 and Nekkiladi has 5 houses without toilets.
The volunteers say that while this is just the tip of the ice-berg, the situation is almost the same in most of the GPs, barring Ira, which has 100 per cent sanitation.
They further informed that they have been persistently pressurised from various quarters to manipulate the numbers.
Voluntary introspection
Responding to the same, Zilla Panchayat CEO P Shivshankar said that the survey was his own attempt to know the mistakes they have committed so that it can be rectified.
“The Government has not asked us to do it. It was my own wish to know what lies beyond the award and I have been disappointed even before the report is out,” he said stating that stray complaints compelled him to take up a survey.
During the survey, the volunteers will visit all the 203 GPs and give correct report.
The survey works have been taken up under the Information Education and Communication (IEC) and the funds for the survey will be carved from IEC.
“I had expected some 50 houses without toilets but I am preparing myself for a shock,” he said. As far as action is concerned, once the report is out, the Gram Panchayats concerned will be asked to build the required number of toilets from their own funds.
Whose lapse?
After this lacunae is visibly clear, it has now been understood that the campaign was never taken in right stride. It was publised by the officials as a competition and not as a campaign and hence the outcome was a rat-race wherein officials and GP elected representatives were ready to do anything for the award.
“It was all about the award and the cash prize the award would bring along. Apart from the local governing bodies, the committee, which came for inspection too needs to be blamed because the Gram Panchayat members usually managed to get their work done by luring the committee with lavish parties and perks. The Committee members did not have any option but to give good ranking,” says a source.
With the real face of ‘Sampoorna Swachatha Andholan’ slowly being exposed in the district, the value of the award and the Gram Panchayats who have genuinely toiled and won the award are at loss.
‘Prize money with ZP’
CEO P Shivshankar said that the 49 GPs which bagged the award during 2006-07 received the full amount and spent the same. The prize money of the remaining GPs, which received the awards during 2007-08 and 2008-09 are with the ZP still. “The Government has released half of the prize money but since it was delayed and further since I wanted the GPs to utilise the amount on solid waste management, I have asked the GPs to get an Action Plan first,” CEO said.

ajay ramchandran July 23rd, 2010, 05:25 AM MANGALORE JUL 23: The New Mangalore Port (NMP) received and unloaded six giant machineries on Tuesday, according to a press release from the New Mangalore Port Trust on Thursday.
The release also said that the over-dimensional cargo (ODC) received from Hazira in Gujarat was unloaded in four hours and 30 minutes. It is being transported to the MRPL site through the recently laid ODC road near KIOCL by a Mumbai-based firm using a 48-axle trailer.
A boiler pot among the machinery received on Tuesday is 15 metres in diameter and 14 metres high and weighs 250 tonnes.
The Silver Jubilee Gate (Tannirbhavi side) of the port, which is presently 8 metres wide, will have to be widened to facilitate movement of the cargo out of the NMPT premises. The gate will be reconstructed after the cargo is taken away. It may take up to a week to move the cargo out of the NMP. Two smaller boiler pots have already been taken to the MRPL premises, the sources said. The NMP is poised for a big leap in handling diversified cargo, as mega projects such as expansion of MRPL, and Suzlon, Udupi Power Corporation, Bharati Shipyard and Tebma Shipyard are coming up in the vicinity of the NMPT. The number of foreign vessels carrying cargo calling at the port has increased while many of the consignments are coming in containers.
The press release quoted NMPT Chairman P. Tamilvanan as saying that the port was fully equipped to handle any type of cargo because of infrastructure additions made during the past few years.

* Process of commissioning the new integrated terminal building begins
* The category-VII Fire Services unit has 29 firemen
* ‘AAI making efforts to put the NITB to use by August 2'
MANGALORE: The process of commissioning the new integrated terminal building (NITB) at the Mangalore airport has begun.
As a first step, the Airports Authority of India (AAI), on Monday, shifted its Fire Services unit to a new building close to the centre of the operational area of the new concrete runway.
Earlier the Fire Services unit was located in a building within the operational area of the old asphalted runway.
Director of the airport M.R. Vasudeva told The Hindu on Wednesday that the new Fire Services building was located a few metres away from the centre of the new concrete runway.
The airport has category-VII Fire Services unit with 29 firemen. They will be on duty round the clock in shifts. The unit has six fire tenders. Two fire tenders are required to be stationed during aircraft operation.
He said that offices of Customs, immigration and different airlines are yet to be shifted to the NITB.
He said the AAI was making efforts to put the NITB to use by August 2.
The NITB was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel on May 15.
Association's plea
Meanwhile, Kerala Association of Travel Agents has urged Mr. Vasudeva to commission the NITB at the earliest. The association has also requested Mr. Vasudeva to start the work on extending the length of the concrete runway at the earliest, vice-president of the association N.A. Sulaiman said in a press release.
Runway extension
If the runway is extended, wide-bodied flights can commence operations from here to Dammam, Riyadh and Jeddah. A large number of Saudi-bound passengers from northern parts of Kerala and south Karnataka districts would benefit from this, Mr. Sulaiman said.

Krishnamoorthy K July 23rd, 2010, 06:35 AM July 22: The Mangalore airport, already made infamous by the recent air crash that claimed several lives, has not received clearance from the fire department for its new integrated terminal, delaying the shifting of its operations to it. The fire department is unhappy with the pipes used in the fire sprinkler system of the new integrated airport terminal, inaugurated by Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel on May 15.
While the airport has used mild steel pipes for its fire sprinkler system based on the guidelines of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), the department insists it should use galvanised iron pipes instead. Chief fire officer Varadarajan says clearance has been held back because the airport has not fulfiflled the department's requirements in its sprinkler system. “We have not given our permission because they have used MS pipes instead of GI pipes,” he explains.
“It has become more of an ego issue now. The fire department became adamant on its stand after a former officer of the airport claimed an NOC from it was not required for the new terminal,” say fire department sources.
“We have a fire alarm in place and sophisticated fire extinguishers in the building. But the fire department wants us to use GI pipes for the sprinkler system because it thinks the MS pipe may get corroded in time. I promise to change the pipes withinin two months and request them to give us the clearance immediately,” says Mangalore airport director M.R. Vasudeva.

Krishnamoorthy K July 24th, 2010, 06:05 AM The state-owned iron ore mining company, KIOCL Limited, has sought the government of India approval to approach the Supreme Court once again for permission for carrying out limited mining in its abandoned mines in Kudremukh in the the eco-sensitive Western Ghats.
KIOCL estimates the broken ore to be in the range of 24 million tonnes and worth over Rs 2,500 crore as per the present market rates. This would be sufficient for the company to run its pellet plant for three years.
The company, which is starved of iron ore for its pellet plant, plans to take out weathered ore in the already broken up areas and convert it into pellets. In 2005, the Supreme Court had ordered the company to close down its mines in Kudremukh on environmental grounds.
“Before closing our mining operations in Kudremukh from January 1, 2005, we had blasted some portions of the mine, which is lying in lose form. This ore needs to be removed from the area, otherwise it may cause greater damage to the ecosystem of Western Ghats and the nearby Bhadra river, at any time. It’s high time the matter is addressed,” K Ranganath, chairman and managing director, KIOCL Limited told Business Standard.
He said the company’s request has already been cleared by the steel ministry and forwarded to the law ministry for clearance. “The law ministry has already held a discussion in this regard and sent our application to the Solicitor General of India for his opinion. Once the law ministry gives its approval, we will approach the Supreme Court with an appeal for approval to removed the weathered ore,” he said.
In addition to this, the company is also planning to extract iron ore tailings (waste material) dumped at the Lakya Dam in Kudremukh. Here, KIOCL has dumped close to 200 tonnes of tailings in the last three decades. “The iron content in the tailings is in the range of 25 per cent and we can extract close to 50 million tonnes of ore from this dam. After separating iron ore from the tailings, we can use the remaining slurry for making bricks and tiles,” he said.
The company is also approaching the state government to give permission to desilt the Lakya Dam as it falls in the forest region. Once the Lakya Dam is desilted, its water storage capacity will increase and the water could be used for supplying water to parts of Mangalore city, which faces scarcity of water during the summer months, he said.
Presently, KIOCL spends close to Rs 60 crore per annum to maintain the ball mill equipment and concentrator plant in working condition. The value of this equipment is about Rs 500 crore. It is also maintaining 430 employees who could be put into the mining operations at any time, Ranganath added.

Krishnamoorthy K July 24th, 2010, 06:10 AM * SET TO CHANGE:The highway to be widened under Phase 4 A of NHDP.
MANGALORE: The proposed widening of the 213-km stretch on the National Highway 13 between Mangalore and Shimoga has taken concrete shape with the Union Government getting a blueprint ready.
The highway is likely to be widened 3 to 5 m to ensure a common width of 10 m all along, including a 1.5-m paved shoulder on either side. It will be a two-lane road with provisions for parking.
A Government-appointed agency on July 16 submitted the draft feasibility report to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, according to official sources.
The Ministry has identified the stretch of the highway for widening under Phase 4 A of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP).
The highway from Mangalore passes through Kaikamba, Moodbidri, Karkala, Kerekatte, Sringeri, Koppa, Tiirthahalli, Mandagadde and Gajanur to reach Shimoga.
According to the report, the average annual daily traffic on the stretch is 10,811 passenger car units (PCUs).
Sources told The Hindu that the traffic density was far lower than the stipulated 15,000 passenger car units, the benchmark for four-laning.
Options
Sources said that the report had recommended two options for widening the highway: improving it for a design speed of 40 to 50 kmph or 80 kmph. Under the first option, widening will cost Rs. 2.8 crore a km and in the second Rs. 13.17 crore. In the first option, all existing major and minor bridges will be utilised as they are in good condition.
In the second option, the stretch will be designed to achieve 80 kmph in rolling terrain and 50 kmph in mountainous terrain. It will have 22.5 km of viaducts and 4.5 km of tunnels at various locations. The draft has recommended bypasses at four places, including three towns.
The Hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2010/07/24/stories/2010072458960300.htm)
Mangaluru-Karkala stretch should be developed as a fourlane as vehicle density is high in this span having important points like Ganjimatt, Moodubidri and many educational institutes. (Plama Mall at Bikarnakatte on this stretch is poised to become important commercial place).
Krishnamoorthy K July 24th, 2010, 06:14 AM * Distance from city to terminal to be reduced by 8 km
* Fire services unit of airport shifted
MANGALORE: The new integrated terminal building (NITB) of the Mangalore airport at Kenjar will start functioning from August 2, according to M.R. Vasudeva, director of the airport.
The present terminal building is at Bajpe. When the new building starts functioning, the distance from the city to the airport will come down by 8 km.
Mr. Vasudeva told The Hindu on Friday that the new concrete road (laid near Sri Devi Institute of Technology), which leads from the Mangalore-Bajpe road to the NITB, would be the access road to the terminal building. The exit will be from the road that passes by the side of the Dakkan Park building.
Mr. Vasudeva said that the recommendation of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services to replace the “corrodible” MI pipes used in the NITB with GI pipes would be complied with. Acrash fire tender will be placed at the NITB round the clock from August 2 till the MI pipes are replaced.
The fire services unit of the airport was shifted to a new building close to the centre of the operational area of the new concrete runway on Monday, he said.

A total of 12,000 square feet area will be reserved exclusively for fish market. There will be 320 stalls to sell fish, 125 stalls for dry fish and 30 stalls for shell fish, he explained.
The parking lot with 1,000 car parking capacity will be provided at the basement of the complex. Separate premises will be arranged for chicken, mutton and vegetable stalls other than fish market, he said adding that the vegetable market will have a separate entrance and common entrance.
No rent for fish vendors
District-in-Charge Minister J Krishna Palemar said that the government is committed to safeguard the fishermen, who are suffering hardship due to the introduction of modern fish vending stalls in shopping malls. Stalls in the proposed hygienic fish market will be made available to fish vendors, especially women, without collecting rent, he added.
Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj said that the design of fish vending stalls will be finalised only after seeking suggestions from fish vendors. The model fish vending stall designed by the architect will be demonstrated to women fish vendors at the Deputy Commissioner’ Office on July 26, he added.
Necessary changes will be made in the design based on the suggestions from fish vendors. The market will be 100 per cent hygienic that it will have water supply connections and UGD connection will be provided to drain the waste, he said and added that the construction work can be completed within two years of the commencement.
NFDC to fund
Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) Chairman Ramachandra Baikampady said that the National Fisheries Development Corporation (NFDC) has already agreed to bear the 90 per cent of the cost. KFDC and the Mangalore City Corporation will have to bear the 10 per cent of the construction cost, he added.
30 crore for wharf
Palemar said that the government has sanctioned Rs 30 crore for the development fishing wharf at Koderi in Byndoor. The Government has already released Rs 10 crore for the purpose. Meanwhile, a total of Rs 1.73 has been sanctioned for the development of Mangalore fishing wharf at Bunder, the Minister added.

Krishnamoorthy K July 25th, 2010, 09:52 AM Here is another version with additional details.
MANGALORE: The fish market operating from near SBI terminus in the city in all likelihood will revert to its original location at the central market. This after the central market gets a complete makeover in a yet to be finalised financial model. However, the plans for this makeover is progressing at a fast pace and the city based Infrastructure Development Foundation has come out with a model fish selling kiosk at the new fish market.
The district in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar, who on Saturday inspected the plan for the new integrated fish-cum-vegetable market to be constructed on the site of the current central market, told reporters here that the government is committed to providing suitable environment for the fishing community in general, and their women in particular to hawk their catch. "Such an environment should be hygienic, and appealing to all," he said.
The authorities are grappling with two financial models for the present. The first model involves a scheme from National Fisheries Development Corporation, which would give 90 per cent grants, and the rest to be borne either by Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation or Mangalore City Corporation, which owns the Central Market. The other model entails developing the Central Market on a public-private partnership mode.
DC V Ponnuraj said there may not be any major change in design of the Central Market prepared by IDF. Clarifying on the business model, he said NFDC might not agree to allow its grants to be used for developing the vegetable market along with the fish market as part of an integrated development plan for the Central Market. In such a scenario, the entire project will have to be executed solely on the basis of a PPP model, he said.
Directing the KFDC chairman Ramachandar Baikampady to display the mock up model of the proposed fish selling unit developed by IDF at DCs office premises from Monday, Ponnuraj said the administration would like to take their feedback and make changes if necessary. The new fish market will provide space for 320 fisherwomen to sell fresh fish, 125 fisherwomen to sell dry fish, and 30 fisherwomen to sell shells and crabs.
Dharmaraj, consultant for IDF pointed out that the entrance to fish and vegetable market would be separate keeping in mind sentiments of people. The fish market would have change rooms, freezers and other allied facility. The waste from the market could be connected to the existing UGD system there, DC said, adding that plans are afoot to stop wholesale vegetable trade at Central Market and shift it to APMC yard at Bykampady.

Krishnamoorthy K July 25th, 2010, 09:54 AM Here is the report on solid waste management in english.
MANGALORE: A revised scheme by Mangalore City Corporation to go in for three-package solid waste management scheme in the city has received state government's nod on July 14. It was the persistence of deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj and MCC commissioner K N Vijayaprakash with officials of directorate of municipal administration, which helped the civic body get this nod, and it will go in for e-tendering this project shortly.
This revised scheme will bring in professional agencies that are experienced in handling solid waste on a large scale in the country. Vijayaprakash said the three-package scheme that will be implemented here would be a first among all civic bodies in the state and revolutionise the way solid waste is collected, handled and disposed. Multiple handling of solid waste by many contractors in 60 wards of the corporation will be passi.
Vijayaprakash told STOI that people need not pay users' fee to contractors for collecting solid waste from their doorsteps. Use of GPS on vehicles used for transporting solid waste from wards to dumping yard at Pachchanady; mechanized sweeping of select roads and beach cleaning will be other salient feature of the new scheme. The user fee could be clubbed with the annual property tax in the form of solid waste fee, he said.
Under this scheme, 60 wards will be divided as north and south zones for managing solid waste. North zone will have 29 wards in one package and south zone 31 wards in another package. The successful bidders, who secure contract of each package will have to undertake the task collection of waste from door-to-door fully, commissioner said, noting that this process was not taking place satisfactorily in the current set up.
The successful bidder will have the task of undertaking street sweeping, vegetation cutting, cleaning the road dividers and other sanitary works. They will also have to transport waste collected to solid waste compost plant and dumping yard at Pachchanady. The third package covers operation and maintenance of compost plant and sanitary landfill site at Pachchanady, functions currently handled by the civic body.
A salient feature of the scheme is that it includes mechanized sweeping of 25-km stretch of roads daily in the south zone. Cleaning of Surathkal, Tannirbavi, Kasba Bengre and Thotada Bengre beaches in north zone too is part of the package. To the credit of the civic body, it has not hired any consultant to prepare the tender documents and estimates, as is the norm, notes, Manjunath R Shetty, environment engineer of the civic body.
The existing six package scheme of solid waste management covering all wards will expire at the end of July. As implementing the new scheme is expected to take some more time, Shetty said the corporation recently invited short-term bids to handle the solid waste in eight packages. When the three-package scheme will be implemented the short-term contract of bidders will be terminated by giving them due notice, he added.

this project comes in place where amrith theater once stood
Krishnamoorthy K July 25th, 2010, 05:28 PM KIOCL Ltd (formerly Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd), a wholly state-owned miniratna enterprise under the Union steel ministry, is in the process of strengthening its balance sheet by fine-tuning its production line and implementing new programmes.
The company, which had shut down its captive iron ore mining operations in the Kudremukh belt in Karnataka in December 2005 following a Supreme Court order, has been struggling in the absence of in-house raw material for its pellet manufacturing plant. Currently, KIOCL is the only government-owned pellet exporter in the country.
Speaking to FE , KIOCL chairman-cum-managing director K Ranganath said the company would invest around Rs 120 crore this financial year to modernise its pellet plant in Mangalore by installing pressure filters to increase output and quality. The pellet production level would increase to 3.5 million tonnes from the current level of 1.5-2.5 million tonnes a year by the first quarter of the next fiscal.
After shutting down its captive iron ore mines, he said the company has been procuring iron ore from the open market at roughly $110 per tonne, which pushed up the pellet production cost to $145 a tonne. If the company has its captive iron ore mines, he said, the iron ore could be mined at a cost of $15-20 per tonne and the production cost of pellet would come down to $50 per tonne.
The company has applied to some state governments to secure captive iron ore mines to reduce its pellet production cost. The Karnataka government has accorded in-principle approval for granting mining lease of 116.5 hectares to the company in the villages of Hombalghatta and Hosahalli. The ministry of environment & forests has accorded the environmental clearance and the company is expecting the final approval from the state.
He also said the company has approached the Union government to scrap the export duty on pellet, since it’s a value-added product. Currently, the government has levied 5% export duty on iron ore fines and 15% export duty on iron ore lumps. The government is considering pellet also as iron ore lumps since it’s being used as a raw material in steel plants, and slapped the same 15% export duty on pellets.
The company’s fortune also remains tied to the implementation of infrastructure programmes in China. In fact, 40% of its pellet production is exported to China while the remaining is traded in the domestic market to steel companies like Ispat, Jindal, Essar and Bhushan. The pellet price was as high as $193 per tonne in May, but declined to $158 in June and $140 in July. The fall in the pellet prices follows the Chinese government slowing infrastructure projects after conducting the 2008 Olympics.
Ranganath said about 70 million tonnes of imported iron ore has been lying at various shipping ports of China. However, iron ore prices are expected to climb to the $175 levels by September this year, and hence, the company could also increase its profits.

Krishnamoorthy K July 28th, 2010, 04:33 PM * Building of seawalls termed counterproductive
* Several houses have been destroyed at Kaikonagar
* A sustainable coastal management project proposed
MANGALORE: The long-held belief that the construction of breakwaters to facilitate movement of fishing boats from Old Mangalore Port to the sea is to blame for erosion at Ullal has found fresh support. A recent report from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has lent credence to this view, besides highlighting that building seawalls to stop erosion could be counterproductive.
K.S. Jayappa, Associate Professor in the Marine Geology Department of Mangalore University, told a seminar last September that sand extraction, construction of breakwaters and building dams across rivers were resulting in huge changes to undercurrents in the ocean and the way sand settled along the coast. The changes in sand sedimentation were responsible for sea erosion, he said.
The ADB report on the environmental impact assessment of the proposed project to find a lasting solution to erosion has said that Ullal beach used to be an attraction for the people of Mangalore. But soon after building breakwaters at the mouth of the Netravati and Gurpur rivers in 1994, the beach along the southern breakwater started getting eroded. “Government agencies started dumping granite boulders to form a seawall as a protective measure. But the erosion only worsened,” the report concludes.
Houses abandoned
The report said that the villages severely affected by erosion extend along the Ullal beach from Kotepura in the north to the Mukkacheri and Someshwara in the south. In Kaikonagar “several houses that were recently destroyed by waves are still visible”. Some portions of the walls built earlier are sinking, forcing agencies to dump more boulders. According to the local people, many attempts in the past to build rock walls on the beach did not succeed. Almost all the coconut palms that provided protection to houses have been uprooted or badly damaged. “Some people have abandoned their houses after they were severely damaged,” the report said.
The ADB, which will soon be taking up a larger sustainable coastal protection and management programme, has said that activities such as dredging and sand extraction have contributed to or caused much coastal erosion in India. Seawall construction can cause beach scour.
While the Government continues to deny the link between breakwaters and sea erosion, an official on Monday conceded that it could not ruled out.

Krishnamoorthy K July 28th, 2010, 04:34 PM MANGALORE: Mangalore City Corporation will shortly invite e-tender for setting up a bio-waste management unit at Urwa Market here, commissioner K N Vijayaprakash said here on Sunday. This unit will process vegetable waste generated in the city with technical aid provided by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) under a pilot project. A scientist from BARC had inspected the site near Urwa Market in December last.
Vijayaprakash, at the inaugural function of competitions organised by the civic body on solid waste management schemes, said the city generates around 220 tonnes of solid waste each day. "We are able to collect 40% through door-to-door collection," he said adding entire waste generated in the city would be collected from the doorsteps once new three-package system on solid waste management becomes operational.
MCC is aiming to set up vermi-compost units in each of its 60-wards and has set up four such units on an experimental basis in the wards represented by corporators Ranganath Kini and Mariamma Thomas. A leading Kerala-based jewellery company has come forward to meet the cost of these units - two each in the two wards - at a cost of Rs 9,100 per unit and this project will be replicated in other wards based on results here.
In addition, the civic body is taking up community awareness campaign on effective disposal of solid and bio-waste with held from students of St Agnes. National Service Scheme units of educational institutions in the city too have been roped in for this project, he said, adding that plans are afoot to start `Green Army' in each of these NSS units. "The concept of Green Army is ready and will be implemented at the earliest," he said.
The corporation through Pilikula Horticultural Society will take up planting of decorative shrubs on road medians on important thoroughfares across the city. "We have identified nine medians on concretised roads where the shrubs supplied by the society can be planted and taken care off," Vijayaprakash said, adding that this exercise will only add to the 'Clean-Green-Beautiful Mangalore' campaign undertaken by the city corporation.

Krishnamoorthy K July 28th, 2010, 04:36 PM * Eco-tourism to come up around Kudremukh plant
* Police commando training unit also to be set up
Bangalore: Drinking water supply to Mangalore, Surathkal and adjoining areas will be augmented shortly following an understanding between the State Government and the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd.
This follows the discussions which Minister for Home V.S. Acharya had with the top officials of the KIOCL and the Union Ministry of Mines. The KIOCL pipeline laid for carrying iron ore slurry will be utilised for augumenting the potable water supply. The requisite water will be drawn from the Lakhya dam across the river Lakhya which is a tributary of river Bhadra.
Dr. Acharya told presspersons that the pipeline can supply up to four million gallons of water a day and KIOCL will utilise it only for a few hours given its restricted operations. The Kudremukh plant will also form the hub for an eco-tourism project and a mining tourism project, and tourists and schoolchildren can visit the project area to witness the operations in what was once a major mining area for export of iron pellets. The entry fee will be utilised for maintenance of the place.
A police commando training unit will be started at Kudremukh. The commandos will be largely deployed for anti-naxal operations in the adjoining districts of Shimoga, Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur, Hassan and Udupi.

engineer.akash July 30th, 2010, 07:48 AM Urban Haat’ all set to open at Pilikula
Vinobha K T, Mangalore, July 29, DHNS:
The City is all set to have a permanent place for artisans across the nation to showcase their talent.
‘Urban Haat,’ an initiative of the Ministry of Textiles of the Government of India, is coming up near the Pilikula Nisargadhama on the outskirts of the City. Urban Haat, which will be a permanent fair for handicrafts, food and cultural activities, is being set up at Pilikula at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore.
The project is a part of Government of India’s policy to set up permanent marketing infrastructure at prime locations in the country to eliminate middlemen. The Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) is the nodal agency for implementation of Urban Haat projects across the nation. Meanwhile, the Development Commissioners for Handlooms and Handicrafts are the coordinators.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, Handicrafts Marketing and Service Extension Centre, Mangalore, Assistant Director P Shashidhar said that the project is funded directly by the Union Ministry of Textiles to the tune of 70 per cent of the estimated cost. Remaining 30 per cent has to be borne by the implementing agency, the State government. “The Central government has already sanctioned a total of Rs 2.10 crore for Urban Haat in Pilikula. Meanwhile, the State government’s share for the project is Rs 90 lakh,” he explained.
The Urban Haat is being developed in five acres of land located near the Science Centre in Pilikula, he said adding that the project is expected to complete by the end of December.
40 stalls, 7 food courts
Pilikula Nisargadhama Project Officer K Parameshwara Adiga said that the Urban Haat will have 40 stalls, 5 to 7 food courts, godowns and dormitory for artisans, who visit the centre from various parts of the nation. “Each state can send their team of artisans to our centre. We will be providing all facilities charging only a nominal fee. Plans are on anvil that a mega artisans’ mela will be organised on the occasion of the inaugural of Urban Haat,” he added.
Second in State
The Centre in Pilikula will be the second Urban Haat in the State. The JSS Mahavidyapeetha had established the JSS Mysore Urban Haat in association with the Union Textile Ministry in 2003. The JSS Mysore Urban Haat has its own permanent structure in a picturesque five acres campus.

Krishnamoorthy K July 30th, 2010, 08:11 AM * Device to control the lights being tried out by civic body
* The system enables centralised handling of streetlights
* It will be tried in one ward and then extended to all others
MANGALORE: A device that automatically switches streetlights on and off, which will help save up to 40 per cent of the power consumed, is being tried out by the Mangalore City Corporation.
The device can even be manually controlled or by remote control through an Internet browser or Internet-enabled mobile phone.
A city corporation official, on the condition of anonymity, told The Hindu that the system had been installed at five places, including M.G. Road. They have been tested for a week. If found feasible, the device would initially be tried in one ward and then installed in all the wards, he said.
Micro-controller
The device, which has been manufactured by Light Matrix Streetlights Pvt. Ltd., consists of a micro-controller, which can be operated through a web portal with varying degrees of access rights, B. Vamsi Ram, project engineer of the company, said.
The time for switching streetlights on and off can be set and monitored. The device can control and monitor the streetlight feeder box, alert authorities in case of fuse burn, and lack of power supply. It also helps in detecting power theft. It provides data on the quality and quantity of power consumed by streetlights, Mr. Ram said.

Krishnamoorthy K July 30th, 2010, 08:57 AM In response to Public Eye of July 14 on the energy crisis and the initiatives being taken to tap alterative sources, K.R. Kamath of Kadri says, “All apartments, commercial establishments and individual houses in Mangalore have built-in generators or inverters. Such a situation can be avoided if the State can supply adequate power. The existing hydro-electric and thermal power plants are grossly insufficient to meet the growing demand. Huge tracts of vacant land along the coastline seem to indicate that wind power can be an alternative source. But the possibility of the salinity and moisture in the coastal winds affecting the life of wind turbines has to be considered seriously. Biogas too can be a decent alternative.”
Varsha S. Shenoy, also of Kadri, says, “Mangalore generates tonnes of biodegradable waste every day. Hence biogas units can be set up with public-private partnership, and regular daily supply of bio-waste could be ensured.
These projects can not only provide cheap power but also be a profitable venture through sale of the organic manure generated from the residue. The only problem with such plants is the objection from residents in the area. ”
Sunil P. Shenoy, Consulting Urologist, writes, “A lot of power is wasted in the State. Several streetlights are left on for the entire day without anyone accountable for the lapse. While alternate sources of power need to be explored, existing resources should be conserved too.”

M'lore: Patil Puttappa Ready to Fight for Mangalore Railway Division
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)
Mangalore, May 8: ‘Nadoja’ awardee, veteran journalist and social activist, Patil Puttappa, said on Friday May 7, that he is prepared to spearhead a campaign for the creation of separate railway divisions in the city and Gulbarga, to improve railway facilities to the coast, Gulbarga district and other north Karnataka regions, which have been facing step-motherly treatment from the railways. He was interacting with the media men during his participation in a seminar organized at Mangalore University about the works of V K Gokak, a Jnanpith awardee.
Puttappa, popularly known as ‘Papu’, expressed anger at the fact the city and Hubli-Dharwad have been neglected by the railways. He expressed the hope that the broad gauge railway line between Ankola and Hubli will materialize shortly, as the opposition of the environmentalists to this project has died down, and the legal impediments have been done away with. He noted that the union environment minister, Jairam Ramesh, too has shown interest in laying this line. “Till this route is completed, the presently available lines can be used to connect the city with north Karnataka districts,” he said.
He expressed the apprehension that even if a separate division is created in the city, it might be linked to the railway zone proposed to be created in Kerala, noting that minister of state for railways hails from that state. He solicited the support of M Veerappa Moily to ensure that Mangalore division, once created, is brought under South Westeran Railway (SWR), and asked union labour minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, to put his weight behind the creation of a separate divison in Gulbarga and bring it under SWR. Puttappa noted that the fact that the city falls under Palgahat division in Kerala, and that Gulbarga is under Solapur division in Maharashtra, are working to the disadvantage of the development of railway services in these regions.
Hope Muniyappa releases Mangalore and Gulbarga from their present divisions and form a separate division for both the cities.

Krishnamoorthy K July 31st, 2010, 08:54 AM I am not denying any regional political interest behind the decision, there may be regional political interest and this is every were in the world but so common and severe in india....I am not arguing the political interest behind the decision of extending the Exp to Cannore, but was arguing that the initial points(in the very first post that trigered this discussion), a person who is not very much aware of the history and the history of protections made so far against the decision will assume that the decision to extend the train to cannore is making a loss to SR.
It is sure that it is not a loss but still it is making the same profit but the issue of quota and berth issue that Mangalorians are facing should be addressed...but be sure that you communicate true reason behind the demand
I have already give reasons. Karwar & Udupi are not connected to their capital Bengaluru at all. But Kannur was given preference. Demand to extedn train to Karwar was pending for a long time. See the other reasons below.
There are a few valid reasons for asking for extension to Karwar:
There is more traffic in this route compared to Kannur.
Karnataka government has spend money on this route from its budget.
Kannur already has a train to Bengaluru which take less time to Bengaluru via Salem. Where as Karwar does not have any.
Southern Railway, South Western Railway and Konkan Railway, agreed to extend the train to Karwar. But the train is diverted to Kannur ignoring this recommendation.
Bengaluru is capital of Karnataka and first preference should be given to connect people of the state to its capital.
Any how PIL is already filed and matter is pending is court. Let us wait for the judgement.
I agree with Ajay that Mangaluru needs a dedicated train to Bengaluru as traffic density is heavy. And they should had given preference to connect to Udupi and Karwar to states capital before considering the other cases. Nobody can deny that states own people should be connected with their capital in a economical way of transportation.
Irshad July 31st, 2010, 09:00 AM Irshad, please comment on this suggestion.
Krishnamoorthy,I strongly agree with you and strongly belive that track doubling between mangalore and Bangalore and Mangalore and Shornur should be given top priority and then the electrification of the track.
And people should join hand and press for the development of rail infrastructure that will benefit the entire region..
ajay ramchandran July 31st, 2010, 09:15 AM I think we have had a reasonable healthy discussion without much bitterness.Let us move and discuss other Mangalore Projects. Otherwise this will be endless.Earlier,I mean several years ago,Railways used to have quotas for each station but I am told that with computerisation this has been taken off and any one can book tickets .The earlier you book the better.
Avi,we are desperate for some photos .
BTW has Marks and Spencer opened in Mangalore?
I read in one of the post that a leading Kerala Jewellery chain has sponsored a few composts plants in Mangalore. Is it Alukkas?
In a way it is good news because they trust the Mangalore corporation which has been very active and on overdrive over the past few years.

Is it still not over? What are the parts that are pending.?Netravathi bridge. They should seriously think of doubling the Konkan railway . Otherwise one will never get the full benefits of Konkan Railway.I have always wanted the Mangalore Junction to be made something like a world class station with private participation but that seems a distant dream
In one of the posts which detailed improvements for Mangalore Central..it mentioned of better circulation..Can anyone tell me what circulation they are referring to ?air circulation.Mangalore station has only a first floor,So why do you need a lift? Is it for people with lot of luggage. I do not think there are many rooms
mangalore mania July 31st, 2010, 11:13 AM Are you sure that the Cannore -Yeashawanthpur exp is making loss to SR?
Are you checked the reverse traffic from Cannore...I have travelled a couple of times to Bangalore(Not in the reverse direction) and found that passenger load is pretty good....
Also the train stops at Mangalore for more that half an hour...so surely it is not profitability, but it is pure regional sentiments that is playing behind the cry :(
Brother there is a terrific unbelievable story behind the reservations of ticket on blore-mlore-kanur train. People travellin from blore to mlore have to book tickets for kasargod, kanhangad, kanur etc. And have to get down at mlore central. This is the reality i have experienced and many people whom i see. And my house is next to railway track running between mlore to kerala so i see the reality thru my eyess too
mangalore mania July 31st, 2010, 11:29 AM Brother i put one question in front me irshad. Is he ready to travel to blore from kanur thru mlore which leaves kanur station at 3pm around and reach blore at 7.30 in mornin. Or will he prefer to travel by bus from kanur via mysore to blore which leaves after 9 and reaches blore at 6 in morning.
Couple of years back i have read in some newspaper where a tender has been called by south western railway to carry out the survey of track doubling between arsikere and mangalore. Is there anybody who can get info on the above tender
aka1055 July 31st, 2010, 01:19 PM Why dont they remove All these private busses!!!
And Make it gover ment busses (BOTH NON VOLVO & VOLVO)
They can start Routes between state bank-balmatta-kadri/shivbagh-nanthoor-Airport in Volvo busses
visnaya July 31st, 2010, 06:32 PM The problem is Mangaluru-Bengaluru track is single line. Traffic is heavy. Raiways is giving more importance to goods traffic.
Best way is Kannur, Mangaluru, Udupi and Karwar people joining hands together and pressurizing the railway to double and electrify the track immediately.
+1
also it there should be more train and it should not take more than 8 hours to reach mangalore. now it takes 12 hours. which era we are in.
One more thing why udupi and kundapur people need railway is connection is the roads are NH roads are bad. traveling is hell.
visnaya July 31st, 2010, 06:44 PM Is it still not over? What are the parts that are pending.?Netravathi bridge. They should seriously think of doubling the Konkan railway . They should go for escalator with luggage taking capability( like what is there in many malls where you can go with trolly. Also railway should stop thinking of Kuli's and introduce trolly like airport.
avi mangalore August 1st, 2010, 07:05 AM this extension of train to kannur is just a political gimmick then nothing else, anyways when once the train is diverted to karwar, a passenger local can be run on the timing of the present exp atleast.

engineer.akash August 1st, 2010, 07:37 AM New airport terminal to open tomorrow
TNN, Jul 31, 2010, 10.05pm IST
MANGALORE: The multi-crore new integrated terminal building of Mangalore airport at Kenjar near here will finally see action, albeit on a trial basis from 6 am on August 2. The Airports Authority of India in a release here on Saturday announced its decision to shift operations to the new integrated terminal building from Monday. Both domestic and international aircraft operations will be handled from the said new terminal.
Airport director M R Vasudeva told STOI that travel operations would commence from the new terminal, closer to the city by nearly six-kilometres. Vehicles coming to new integrated terminal building would do so from road laid adjacent to Shree Devi Institute of Technology, and exit from the road adjacent to Dakkan Park. The existing road to the terminal is narrow to facilitate easy two-way movement of vehicles, he said.
On the spin offs of this move to the travelling public, Vasudeva said there would be clearer demarcation of arrival, departure and visitors lounge. Simply put, Vasudeva said the new integrated terminal building would reduce congestion for all concerned. "People will now have the luxury of a good ambience, better facilities, and an air conditioned hall to go with," he said, adding all the facilities have been tried and tested for public use.
The only hitch is that passengers would have to wait for at least a fortnight before the newly installed aerobridges are put to use at the terminal, he said. "The trials for the new aero bridges are being carried out in a phased manner, and we hope to put them in to operation in the next 15-20 days," he said. The airlines and all end users of the airport are fully geared up to make this shift to the new terminal building, Vasudeva said.
The AAI has also taken steps to meet the fire safety requirements as mentioned by the fire and emergency services department, he said, adding that the recommendations made by the chief fire officer H S Varadarajan on replacing the mild steel pipes with GIC pipes has been accepted and steps initiated. "In the meanwhile, we have posted a fire crash tender and set up a fire control room as directed by the officer," Vasudeva asserted.

gentem August 3rd, 2010, 06:53 AM Passengers upbeat about new Bajpe terminal
STANLEY G PINTO, TNN, Aug 2, 2010, 09.56pm IST
MANGALORE: The opinion of passengers who used the Rs 158 crore New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Bajpe airport, which was opened up for passenger traffic on Monday, was unanimous: Nice and spacious.
But their point of comparison was the old terminal, which will be used for cargo operations soon. A major grouse of all passengers who arrived at the airport was the approach road, which they said was not user-friendly. Mercifully, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has made the approach road one-way and the exit has been provided via Dakkan Park route. The entry road is a steep incline and has several hair pin bends and allowing two-way traffic, though it's two-lane, is nothing short of a hazard as there are many blind spots. The new approach road reduces the distance between the city and airport by over seven km, as compared to the old airport terminal.

Pilikula Nisargadhama, a refreshing man made oasis in the concrete desert of urbanisation near Mangalore, is a commendable initiative to revive and showcase ancient customs and heritage of Dakshina Kannada, writes Shalini Satish
When we stepped out of the Mangalore Central Railway Station without an umbrella, it was obvious that we were tourists. While visitors crowded under a shelter, locals used their rain gear and walked out, unperturbed by the heavy downpour.
The unrelenting showers seemed to be a way of life here. Motorists clad in ankle length raincoats, school children holding umbrellas, auto rickshaws with tarpaulin covers — everyone seemed to have a way to work around the rain. It was business as usual. As we drove past rain drenched roads, water clogged paddy fields and houses with sloping clay tiled roofs we got a sense of what the monsoons are like in Mangalore.
From Mangalore City we headed to Pilikula Nisargadhama, a refreshing man made oasis in the concrete desert of urbanisation. In the local language Tulu, Pili means tiger and kula means pond. According to received wisdom, this area was once home to free roaming tigers that frequented a watering hole in the vicinity and hence the name.
Reviving ancient customs
If the legend is to be believed, then deforestation and destruction must have driven tigers out of their den and turned Pilikula into a barren land devoid of trees. However, a concerted effort by the Dakshina Kannada District Administration has brought the greens back to Pilikula and fostered its development as an eco-educational and tourism project.
Pilikula Nisargadhama is a commendable initiative to revive and showcase the ancient customs, traditions, heritage, flora and fauna of Dakshina Kannada. Spread across 370 acres, Pilikula Nisargadhama currently comprises of a biological park, an artisan village, a heritage village, a golf course, an amusement park, a science centre, a tourist home, a lake garden and an arboretum.
Since its inception in 2001, the Pilikula Biological Park has been doing its bit towards the conservation and breeding of flora and fauna endemic to the Western Ghats. Spread across 150 acres, this well maintained Biological Park shelters several species of birds and animals some of which are endangered.
The park currently has a snake house with many different snakes including king cobras, pythons, rat snakes, russell’s vipers and trinket snakes. Apart from 65 species of free ranging birds, there are animals like tigers, lions, leopards, mouse deer, sloth bears, crocodiles, porcupines, wild boars and elephants within enclosures that resemble their natural habitat. The park is soon going to have a King Cobra breeding centre commissioned by the Central Zoo Authority.
The Heritage Village comprising of coconut and areca plantations, a Kambala race track, a Guthu Mane and a Nagabana recreates the aesthetics of a rural setting in Dakshina Kannada. At the heart of the village stands a replica of a typical Guthu Mane (the traditional house of the coastal landlords) resplendent with carved pillars and ceilings. Kambala is an age old folk sport of buffalo racing.
The Nethravathi-Phalguni race track constructed in front of the Guthu Mane plays host to the annual Jodekare Kambala event. Nagabana is the serpent shrine in the vicinity of the Guthu Mane where the snake God is worshiped.
The artisan village is an interesting concept where master craftsmen reside in houses dedicated to a particular traditional art. Apart from training those who are interested in acquiring a particular skill the artisans make products which are marketed by the Pilikula Nisargadhama Society. Weaving, black smithy, pottery making, cane and bamboo works, making beaten rice, wood and stone carving and oil extraction are some skills demonstrated by the artisans.Visitors can watch the artisans at work and also interact with them. The Artisan Village is an effort to preserve and promote the age old vocations of the people of Dakshina Kannada.
Biodiversity hotspots
Perched atop a hillock overlooking the quiet flowing Gurupura River, coconut groves and acacia plantations is the Gurupura Nisargadhama Resort. The resort is the latest offering of Jungle Lodges and Resorts, a government of Karnataka undertaking. The property offers scintillating views of the prosperous river bank and hills looming over the lush green plains. Day trippers can stop by at the resort for a sumptuous meal with Mangalorean delicacies.
The Western Ghats are recognised as one of the biodiversity hot spots in the world is home to several rare plants. With over 60,000 saplings, the arboretum in Pilikula is a treasure trove of flora, many of which are endemic to the Western Ghats. Visitors can walk along the 3 km long pathway to get a closer look at the varieties of trees and shrubs.
The peaceful Pilikula Lake and its surrounding gardens attract a large number of visitors. Desilting and restoration efforts have been undertaken to breathe life into the lake. Fresh water fish, ducks and geese have been introduced into the lake. Motor boats and pedal boats are available at the boating point. Cutting across lush lawns and landscaped gardens around the lake are jogging tracks and walking paths.
Among other things Pilikula stands out as a human effort to give a reprieve to nature. The initiative of the Pilikula Nisargadhama Society to showcase the rich cultural heritage and natural wealth of Dakshina Kannada district is commendable. Be it just a quick visit to this green paradise or a holiday to unwind in the nature’s lap, Pilikula is great place to acquaint with nature and understand the importance of saving it for another day.

Krishnamoorthy K August 5th, 2010, 07:20 PM The Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project headed by its CEO Mr. Yathish Baikampady has come up with a new initiative. It has authored an agreement with two other organizations to set up a life guard Academy in Mangalore which will train lifeguards in the art of saving lives. The Rashtriya Life Saving Society of India (RLSSI) and the Surf Life Saving Australia have come together with the Project. To start Karnataka's first ever lifeguard academy.
Officials of the Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project and RLSSI exchanged documents of the agreement at a press briefing on Wednesday. Outlining the objectives of the Academy Mr. Baikampady said a life saving mechanism was already functioning at Panambur beach, expert life guards have already saved 24 lives so far and the academy will take lifesaving to another level where the lifeguards will be trained in the new techniques of life saving and arm them with equipments. The RLSSI will provide the guidelines for the Academy while the Surf Saving Australia will help in equipping the Academy.
http://mangalorean.com/images/newstemp26/20100805lg-14.jpg
When asked about the carried aspects of the academy Mr. Baikampady said there was a serious shortage of qualified and proficient lifeguards in the country, they were wanted in swimming pools, resorts, beaches, water theme parks. A medium city like Mangalore can absorb as much as 40 lifeguards and in cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and other cities are demanding lifeguards for their water sport facilities.
Rear Admiral Purushottam Dutt Sharma founder president of the RLSSI on this occasion said "Our mission was to save lives, The RLSSI will promote lifeguard groups in all places wherever there are water bodies, sea coast, swimming pools and even rivers and bogs. The RLSSI was a pan India organiastion that has been proactively involved in life saving operations in the country for over 12 years
Mr. Norm Farmer General Manager of the Surf Life saving Australia (SLSA) said that his organisation was a world leader in beach safety with 103 years of experience in the field. The SLSA and RLSSI were both members of the International Life Saving Federation and also shared a strategic partnership to provide a safety system on India's beaches. The International Life Saving Federation has been acknowledged by the World Health Organisation and the International Olympic Association.

Krishnamoorthy K August 5th, 2010, 07:23 PM MANGALORE: An initiative taken by DK zilla panchayat to meter rural water supply in the district has caught the fancy of department of drinking water supply, Union ministry of rural development. Presentations made by P Shivashankar, chief executive officer of the ZP at an international seminar in New Delhi on May 24, and subsequent presentations at regional seminars have convinced mandarins of the ministry about its efficacy.
The department is now pushing to replicate this endeavour at an all India level, where rural water supply is likely to be metered. The zilla panchayat took up this initiative on a pilot project basis in Kinnigoli, Haleyangadi, Thokur, and Golthamajalu gram panchayat. Riding on its success, the zilla panchayat has so far ensured partial metering of drinking water connections in 127 out of 203 gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada district.
The spatial distribution of habitats in the district makes operation and maintenance of drinking water schemes implemented by the panchayat a challenging task, Shivashankar told reporters at an interaction meet organised by Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists' Association. "We see a lot of water going waste in many places, and there are issues of inequitable distribution of water and rates charged to end users," he noted.
The zilla panchayat has so far succeeded in fixing meters to 39,000 out of the 86,000-odd rural water connections in the district. "The World Bank too is taking interest in projecting the initiative taken up by us," he said, adding that the Union ministry through the department is likely to come out with a policy statement on implementing this initiative, specifying the role of government, and the people while undertaking this mammoth exercise.
Another challenge, Shivashankar said is ensuring water source continuity to the 1,800-odd drinking water schemes functional in the district. "We will be implementing source continuity initiatives in gram panchayats in Bantwal and Mangalore taluk at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore during the current monsoon," he said adding that the panchayat was awaiting government nod for this expenditure. The results may be evident next summer.

Welcome to SSC Ajay.
The plot opposite to TMA Pai Convention centre is the only vacant plot in that stretch of MG road. A mall in that plot will give a nice look to the area. Unlike the citi centre mall for which the approach roads are small (even after widening), this plot (opposite TMA pai centre) has better access considering the width of the road.

Dex_Mangalore August 6th, 2010, 03:53 PM Unlike the citi centre mall for which the approach roads are small (even after widening), this plot (opposite TMA pai centre) has better access considering the width of the road.
The current width of both the roads are more or less the same. Even if some of the frontage space of the empty plot is acquired, it will be a nightmare for traffic coming in from Lalbagh side when they head back. It will create a road block near Empire mall where they`ll have to take a u-turn.
Vehicles headed to TMA Pai Auditorium from PVS side can atleast turn near Ballalbagh circle and wait to merge, but that is not the case for opposite plot.:ohno:
Krishnamoorthy K August 6th, 2010, 08:42 PM We are also developing a project in Mangalore, spread over four acres. The residential portion is around 6-7 lakh sq ft. We are developing a 24-floor tower comprising three and four BHK flats; the average size of the apartments would be 2,600 sq ft. We are developing over 240 apartments. We will be launching the project soon, at around Rs 4,000 per sq ft.

Krishnamoorthy K August 7th, 2010, 06:41 AM MANGALORE: Mangalore Agricultural Marketing Produce Committee (APMC) on Thursday flagged off a move to improve basic infrastructure at its Bykampady yard near here under the development of marketing infrastructure (DMI) scheme. Under this scheme, the main and side roads leading to the yard and godown will be concreted at an estimated cost of Rs 12.15 crore and street lights provided along the length of these roads.
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) finances the DMI scheme where the participating APMCs is given 25 per cent of the total project cost as subsidy. The APMC has to bear the remaining 75 per cent of the project cost and it has already spent around Rs 4 crore on implementing part of the project. The APMC also has tied up with Indian Overseas Bank to fund the remaining part of its project share.
K Krishnaraj Hegde, president, APMC, who will lay down office after a five-year tenure as head of the committee on Sunday told reporters here on Thursday that the state government has accorded permission to APMC to raise funds from bank to raise its share of the project. IOB is giving us loan at nine percent rate of interest," he said. Paper work for sanctioning rest of the amount is ready, but we are yet to avail it, he added.
The 18-member APMC was facing a dilemma in raising this amount, as we did not want to end out tenure leaving the committee facing a debt, Hegde noted. However, since we had received necessary approvals for the government and the state was keen on availing the grants given by NABARD under DMI scheme, the APMC went ahead with implementing the project to develop infrastructure at the yard, Hegde added.

Krishnamoorthy K August 7th, 2010, 06:45 AM * The three-pronged project is estimated to cost Rs. 238 crore
* Seawall is not an appropriate remedy, states report
* Ullal beach is stated to have lost dynamic stability
http://www.hindu.com/2010/08/07/images/2010080761890301.jpg
CAUSE OF CONCERN:The seawall of large boulders at Ullal beach in Mangalore has not prevented erosion, especially during the monsoon.
MANGALORE: The Asian Development Bank-aided coastal protection and management plan provides for a three-pronged solution to the problem of sea erosion at Ullal.
The scheme consists of construction of two large 600-m reefs offshore in 6-m-deep water and construction of four near-shore berms (raised barriers). It calls for ‘beach nourishment' of 3,50,000 cubic m along the Ullal sand spit to be sourced from Netravati river. Thirdly, the southern breakwater will be shortened and the northern breakwater extended to allow the sediment from the Netravati to be pushed southward and support beach nourishment, according to the environment impact assessment report of the project available with The Hindu.
Huge waves and the expanding sea demolish at least a few houses along Ullal beach, and some roads, every year. The State Government has already invited tender for appointment of consultants for the Rs. 238-crore project, to be implemented after this monsoon, according to A. Sujan Rao, Ports and Fisheries Engineering subdivision, Mangalore. The proposal has been cleared by the State Cabinet and the approval of the Central Water Commission is awaited, he said.
Inappropriate solutions
The report pointed out that so far about 57 km of seawalls (huge rocks dumped along the coast) have been constructed along the Karnataka coastline, but they have failed in several cases because they “were inappropriate coastal protection solutions, lacked maintenance, and used poor construction methods. Coastal protection is generally developed as an emergency measure and the range of possible interventions considered is limited to a few hard structural measures such as seawalls and groins. Most seawall structures collapse in three to 10 years,” the report said.
The report suggests that high tides may not be the only reason for sea erosion. The daily tidal amplitude at Ullal beach varies from 1 m to 1.5 m and “tides may not have any major role in coastal erosion, but along with the dynamics of currents and waves, their role in the system is significant”. High tides during storms or large wave events may have a more significant effect on the shoreline. The current speed observed and reported off Mangalore coast during May at a depth of 9 m was 0.05 to 0.4 m a second.
Equilibrium lost
An important feature of the beach ecosystem at Ullal, according to the report, is its changing condition. Sand is partially lost in the scour that occurs during monsoon and replenish during the non-monsoon period. Having evolved over a long period of time, the beach has lost its dynamic stability through the extreme erosion of monsoon waves and disruptions in the sediment budget caused by interventions such as breakwaters and seawalls. “Thus, the material (sand) cycle in the beach has almost lost its equilibrium and the beach system is in unidirectional degradation,” the report said.
It is one of beaches of varying aesthetic potential and among those deemed unfit for use because of coastal erosion and other human activities, the report said.

Mangalore : It could be an Independence Day gift for towards and home returning Mumbai workers. But this is a happy news in store for all passengers who travel between Mangalore and Mumbai regularly by trains only. The Mumbai –Karwar superfast Express service in now extended to Mangalore Central Terminal from August, 14 on the eve of 64th Freedom Day, courtesy Central, Minister for Railways, K.H. Muniappa of Kolar. Bookings will open soon and there could be heavy rush on this line, in spite of opening of Kenjaru International Airport from Aug.2 for air services with Mangalore closer to the new airport (Bajpe closed) by 7 kms, at 15 kms away only. The track is that of Konkan Railway, which may come under Southern Rly in the next 2 years.
A west coast Railway Passengers Journey Development Committee met the Ministers on Wednesday
There is another sweet news, that Mangalore to Bangalore. Day train via Arsikere and Hassan may run daily by October 1. It may even be extended upto Karwar in Karnataka Muniappa has promised. A sum of Rs. 4 crores has been released by state govt for renovating Byndoor Rly. Stn
Railway users committee chairman Hanumant Kamath adds that grants from union govt, which had not been released so far for the Konkan Railway development and passenger amenities are assured to be released soon by Minister Muniappa.
The Committee members Rajiva Gaonkar (V.P), K. Venkatesh Kini (Kollur Railway users’ union) Krishna Prasad Adyantaya (Kollur Temple), Jagdeesh Patwal (secretary), and treasurer Nagaraja Sheth, among others were present in the delegation that met Railway authorities in New Delhi. Local MPs DVS Gowda and Nalin Kumar Kateelu had done the spadework for better Railway services, and discussed these problems with Minster Muniappa earlier, along with NK MP Anant Hegde Ashisara. The committee also met the 3 MPs on Thursday for clarifications. In New Delhi, the Committee members had met Oscar Fernades, AICC General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP.
The two trains from Mumbai via Goa and Karwar to Mangalore and the Bangalore-Mangalore day train extended to Karwar will put the entire Karnataka West Coast on Railway Map and provide fillip to Mangalore city as only next to Bangalore in tourism / travel infrastructures this decade. This major development comes after forming New Mangalore Port Trust.

I reached Mumbai safely last night. Staying at Malabar Hill.
The empyu plot has a story. The land belonged to coastline developers. They had planned a 25 storied business twin towers. However during the last recession in the 90's the company collapsed .Infact they had given land free for MG Road widening scheme in returnfor other favours like permissonfor the high rise which was named CASA BLANCA. This evn featured inn color o the cover of Mangalore telephone directory. Anyway the property changed hands and then there has been problems! But I had a mail from Ramesh Kumar's agent that a prestigious and expensive project was planned there. Mall/Hotel would be ideal and that was what has been [planned.
