I doubt if they are going to repair the roads. If you go back to three years this was the state of road between KREC and Panambur or even till Kottara. There was no road there. They did not do any patch work then but just built the new highway.Same may happen here as well

Indiareit has residential project in Mangalore? (http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/ajay-piramal-may-exit-real-estate-pe-fund/408046/)
Krishnamoorthy K September 14th, 2010, 10:02 AM MANGALORE: There may be some relief to residents of erosion prone areas of Ullal with the Rs 140 crore Asian Development Bank ( ADB) funded project, which proposes to erect two submersible reefs and three off shore berms. These two structures will come somewhere between Ullal, Kotepura and Mogaveerapatna providing relief to residents and fishermen in this area.
While the reefs will come will come up 1.5 km off Ullal coast, the offshore berms will be on the shore near Ullal.
The reefs made of non-polypropylene mat, will be 200 mts in length and 38 mts in width. They will be laid in three layers from the sea bed. The mats will be 3.5 mts below the sea surface. These mats, imported from New Zealand, will be pumped in with sand and their weight will see that it settles at the bottom. The dry weight of the reefs will be 2 tonnes and will weigh about 4.5 tonnes after its filled with sand, which will help them settle on the sea bed without any anchorage requirement.
Department of ports and fisheries assistant executive engineer Sujanchandra Rao said they have received 15 bids, from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, including two from India, for the project costing Rs 140 crore. It is a part of the ADB's Rs 228 crore project and the reef and berm work will be taken in the first tranche. In the second tranche, the breakwater correction will be made, including beach nourishment.
He said the project will take off once the final design of the placement of the reef and berm has been worked out. While the company which supplies the mat wants to put the reef and berm according to mathematical model, the department has insisted that the design should be based on regular flow model developed by Pune-based Central Water Power Research Stations ( CWPRS).
The berm and reef have a guarantee of four years. Rao said the consultant will record the reef and berms position from time to time. "In case the reef or berm gets shifted, the company has to put it in place in the liability period, he added.
As far as the North and South breakwaters near Old Port here, they have to be redesigned as the design is based on a mathematical model rather than a regular flow model, is not serving its purpose. This will be taken up in the second tranche.

KCCI to seek train service to Howrah
Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE: G.G. Mohandas Prabhu, the newly elected president of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said on Tuesday that pushing for setting up a cricket stadium here is among the six areas of thrust for 2010-11.
The chamber would press for a direct train from Mangalore to Howrah in West Bengal, as labour migration from that State to this region was on the rise.
A consultant of the chamber had prepared a draft of the possible route for the train via Bantwal, Hassan, Bellary, Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Kharagpur, Mr. Prabhu said.
Mr. Prabhu said that a report commissioned by the chamber and authored by Deepa Thattai of SRM University, Tamil Nadu, to study the causes of sea erosion in coastal Karnataka, had been sent to the Government. The chamber would request a technical committee of the Government to sit with that of the chamber and deliberate on the report, which was highly technical. Ms. Thattai was likely to be part of the chamber's team, he said.
The chamber would try to prepare a detailed project report for a new fishing harbour in Kulai-Hosabettu area within about six months. The chamber was looking at exploring alternative sources of energy such as wind and solar to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the city. It would also demand the appointment of a divisional officer for the Employees State Insurance for Mangalore, he said.
Mr. Prabhu said that the chamber had requested the Government to identify a place for developing another industrial area in the city. The chamber would work towards improving the facilities at the two industrial areas, he added.
The Government will be requested to make the proceeds of TDRs (Transferable Development Rights) free from Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax. The Union Government will be asked to appoint a Commissioner of Income Tax for Appeals in Mangalore, he said.
The chamber has written to the Department of Tourism to open a full-fledged tourism office in the district. The Government is proposing a railway station of international standards at Mangalore at an estimated cost of Rs. 550 crore. A meeting of all the stakeholders will be held here in October. The Government will be urged to increase the frequency of the Bangalore-Kannur train to all days of the week.
A study is being carried out to determine the feasibility of transporting air cargo from Mangalore.
The chamber has petitioned the Civil Aviation Ministry to rename the Mangalore Airport as U.S. Mallya Airport. It would try for introducing Volvo bus service between the city and the airport, he said.

Krishnamoorthy K September 16th, 2010, 05:08 PM The 130-year-old Father Muller College Hospital (FMCH) located at Kankanady, Mangalore is planning to construct a new building for a trauma centre and a casualty ward within the same premises of its 40-acre campus. The new centre is supposed to come up next to the present OPD building. At present, at the site of the new trauma centre is an old age home of the Diocese.
The new centre, which would be around seven to eight storeys, would add another 200 beds, taking the bed strength from the present 1,050 to 1,250. The centre would be spread over 85,000 square feet, of which 10,000 square feet is dedicated to the trauma centre. Twenty beds would be allocated to trauma. "The rest of the beds would be added for other super specialties like cardiac sciences, urology and neuro sciences," adds Fr Rodrigues. The institute is looking at donor agencies for funding the new centre.
The new centre also plans to conduct kidney transplants. "We already have the license for it," says he. The medical college hospital is planning to go for PACS. "We also want to improve our IT connectivity. Though we have HIS, we want to now go for EMR," says he.

engineer.akash September 18th, 2010, 10:14 AM Road asphaltation after monsoon, says Mayor
Mangalore, Sept 17, DH News Service:
Measures will be taken to asphalt roads in Bunder area after the monsoon, said Mayor Rajani Dugganna.
Speaking on integral development of Mangalore City Corporation organised by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Friday, she said the engineers have been asked to make an estimate for the asphaltation of the road. The road to Bunder was asphalted 10 years ago. Along with the asphaltation of the road, the work on concrete drains will also be undertaken.
A fulfledged City and service bus stand will come up at Pumpwell soon. Tenders will be invited soon, she added.
Markets
Dugganna said that tenders have been invited to develop market at Alake and Mangaladevi. The work will commence soon.
To a query on the deplorable condition of the interior roads, she said that a sum of Rs 50 lakh would be given to each ward for the development of interior roads from the Rs 100 crore grant by the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.
To a query on toilet facilities at Bunder region, Deputy Mayor Rajendra Kumar said “if the merchants of the region show us the land, we will construct the toilets in the form of Sulabh Shauchalaya.”
Central Market Merchants Association President Hameed Kandak said that the road leading to Mangalore junction railway station is in deplorable condition, which the MCC should pay attention as a large number of train passengers depend on the road. In fact, the road is unmotorable, he added. He also urged the MCC to construct a overbridge or underpass at Jeppinamogaru.
Member H R Rao said that beautification of Mangalore is being undertaken. However, many residents, hoteliers still throw the wastes on the footpaths, marring the beauty of the City. He said that stray dogs are increasing in the City Corporation limits.
In fact, stray dogs have become headache for the morning walkers. The MCC should take measures to check stray dogs. To which, Mayor said that stray dogs have become headache even to the Mangalore City Corporation.
Inspite of it, dogs are being sterilised in the City Corporation limits.
Traffic management
Consultant Engineer Praveen Shetty said that traffic jams have become common sight in Mangalore City Corporation. In fact, several circles on the road are not in the Centre of the road but are shifted to one side. As a result, on the other side, the road becomes narrow compared to the rest of the road.
KCCI President G G Mohandas Prabhu was present.
‘Barricades obstacle’
KCCI office-bearer Ahamed Bhava said that the barricades have been put up in front of the Lady Goschen Hospital to prevent the movement of heavy vehicles to the Central market. However, the move of the district administration is affecting the merchants. He urged the Mayor to reconsider the decision.
Supporting his view, Association’s Abdul Kalam said that it is not right on the part of district administration to say that traffic is caused by the vehicles entering the Central Market area.
Reacting to it, Deputy Mayor Rajendra Kumar said that the decision to install a barricade was taken in the presence of all the merchants of Central Market.

That is true. Permits for more than 6000 autorikshaws and 500 buses are pending!
rajone September 18th, 2010, 07:09 PM That is true. Permits for more than 6000 autorikshaws and 500 buses are pending!
But permits to autos is also not the solution. Auto drivers are most indisciplined drivers in road, the main cause of most traffic jams and accidents. The auto drivers need to be educated in driving sense and discipline before being issued permits for maintaining traffic discipline and safety.
engineer.akash September 18th, 2010, 07:13 PM New buses will not get permit to ply within city limits, says DC
Mangalore:Sep 18, DHNS:
As the four-laning of Nanthur-Talapady work is going to begin within two months and with the increase in the density of traffic, permits for new buses can not be given within the City limits, said Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj.
Speaking at the RTA meeting here on Saturday, he said Comprehensive Transport and Traffic Plan (CTTP) is being prepared for the City.
The traffic system in the city will change once the CTTP is completed. A meeting with the stakeholders will be convened at the earliest.
The four-laning of Nanthur-Talapady will commence soon. There would be disruption in the movement of vehicles during the four-laning work. The density of vehicles will also increase, he added.
In Baikampady and Ullal bridge region, the density of vehicles would be more than that of its capacity. Hence, the new permits for the buses to ply to the City will create problems.
Stating that there was no problem in issuing permits for the running of new buses to rural areas, the DC said the density of vehicles are more on M G Road, PVS, Jyothi, Balmatta, Kankanady and Pumpwell. To avoid the density of the vehicles, the traffic system in the city limits will be divided into four separate zones. “We have plans to have one way traffic in some areas.
“Even the City and Service bus stand will be shifted to Pumpwell which will reduce the traffic in the city limits. There are plans to go for four-laning of Falnir road.”
“Till the four-laning of the work is complete, one way traffic will be in force on Falnir road,” he informed. The Deputy Commissioner had recently cancelled the permits of those buses which failed to operate even after obtaining the permits in the district.
Those who had taken the permits had appealed before the Court and asked for reviewing the cancellation of permits.
The RTA decided to review 178 such applications as per the direction of the Court. Of the 178 applications, 50 applications were heard on Saturday.
‘Traders ready to shift ’
About 70 per cent of the merchants have agreed to shift retail business in Central Market area to APMC yard in Baikampady. About 30 per cent have expressed opposition to the same. The decision will be taken after holding a detailed discussion, said Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj. Speaking to presspersons, he said “there is no change in the stand of the district administration in banning the movement of heavy vehicles to Central Market region. In spite of issuing a notification to ban the entry of heavy vehicles, they enter the city limits. Hence, barricades will be laid in the important places to ban the entry of heavy vehicles.”
RTO Seva Nayak and SP Dr A S Rao others were present.

This decision will give a boost to personal vehicles plying on NH-17. On the other hand more buses means more people travel by buses and hence personal vehicle traffic will decrease and hence traffic pressure on bridges will decrease.
CM Yediyurappa during his last visit to Mangaluru had travelled by a volve bus. This should be exemplary guiding principle to all decision makers in the government.

Krishnamoorthy K September 22nd, 2010, 05:31 AM MANGALORE: Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has urged Union minister of railways Mamata Banerjee to introduce Howrah (Kolkata) and Ahmedabad trains from here.
In a letter to the Banerjee, Kateel said that more than two million people from this part of the coast were residing in Mumbai, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, carrying out their business and doing jobs in various companies.
He said at present, there are few trains between Mumbai and Mangalore and none to Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Besides, the region was getting its manpower requirements from northern states especially Bihar, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh.
Kateel suggested that the Mangalore to Howrah train run via Arasikere, Chitradurga, Guntkal, Vijayawada Vishakpatnam and Bhubaneshwar. Regarding the train to Ahmedabad, he said it can be introduced via Karwar, Madgaon, Belgaum, Miraj, Pune, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
He also requested the Union minister to extend Mumbai-Madgaon- Karwar train No 2133/2134 up to Mangalore Central, so people from the entire coastal Karnataka region will benefit from it.

Krishnamoorthy K September 22nd, 2010, 05:45 AM * Now, shopkeepers are responsible for cleanliness at Central Market
* The market becomes slushy during the monsoon
* Erratic power supply stated to be a huge problem
MANGALORE: Although there has been a visible improvement in the cleanliness inside Central Market, a key problem that remains unresolved crops up every year during the monsoon.
The traders have built roofs for their individual stalls over the years. However, several parts of the market still remain open. As a result, the narrow pathways become slushy during the monsoon. A statement by David D'Souza, a shopkeeper, that the market was generally clean when it rained was, however, refuted by two of his customers. One of them said it was too filthy to set foot in the market during the rains.
Hameed Kandak, president of the Central Market Merchants' Association, said that despite several appeals over the last 10 years, the authorities had done nothing. Now, the officials say that there is no point in pursuing the matter as a new market building will soon be coming up.
Mr. Kandak said, “I doubt the building will come up soon. Promising a new building, the officials shifted the fish market to the (Nehru) maidan (near Hamilton Circle) about eight years ago.” He also feared that the project might be implemented by private players and they might impose arbitrary restrictions on the traders.
Cleaner now
Till very recently, cleanliness inside the Central Market was a huge problem. But a recent order of the district administration has made the shopkeepers responsible for cleanliness.
Earlier, the city corporation workers used to clear the waste every evening.
Until two years ago, there was no water in the toilets in the market, and so it had been rendered unusable. Now, however, especially for the last two months, the situation has greatly improved, David D'Souza, a vegetable vendor, said. A person has been appointed to clean the toilets and there is running water also, according to several workers in the market.
“As the vegetables lose water content during summer, the weight decreases and results in loss of revenue for us,” he said. The cement sheets used as roofing for the haphazardly constructed stalls make the heat worse. “We need electricity to run at least fans, if not air-conditioners. This is necessary even from the point of view of hygiene,” he added.
Several merchants and workers complained of the lack of drinking water inside the market. Some even urged the city corporation to provide water.

* Retail vendors occupy most of the footpath and the road
* Market area needs proper regulation by authorities
Move to keep heavy vehicles out irks traders (http://www.hindu.com/2010/09/22/stories/2010092259950300.htm)
In the new market plan are they going to provide parking place for trucks for loading and unloading? I had posted earlier that I have seen Big Bazar unloading trucks parked on footpath in front of Bharat Mall. If this is the situation in a supposedly well organized mall then how they are planing to control unloading operations in the market area? And also they may have to provide separate lifts for wholesale fruit & vegetable movements.
Also are they going to accommodate autos in parking area or autos will be allowed to park on roads and footpaths as it is now.
Krishnamoorthy K September 22nd, 2010, 05:47 AM * ‘DC will be its convener and stakeholders will be the members’
Mangalore, 22 September 2010: A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will start functioning under the Urban Development Department for the implementation of Mangala Corniche Riverfront Development project.
Addressing a technical discussion on the project at Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday, Karnataka State Industrial Investment Development Corporation (KSIIDC) Chairman N Yogish Bhat said that the SPV will have the Deputy Commissioner as its Convener and stakeholders will be the members.
Mangala Corniche, the Riverfront Development is being implemented by KSIIDC, Mangalore Urban Development Authority, Mangalore City Corporation and Coastal Development Authority with assistance from Gujarat Town Planning Scheme model in PPP model.
Bhat informed that a comprehensive survey will be conducted by KSIIDC from Ullal-Kulur-Maravoor-Gurupura-Kannur-Ullal. He said that the 30 km long road will be designed like a ‘necklace’, which will touch all the three National Highways, viz NH-17, NH-48 and NH-13. Mangala Corniche road will have Kannur to Ullal bridge, Ullal to Kulur bridge, Kuloor to Maravoor bridge and Maravoor to Gurupur bridge developed in four parts. Bhat said that the project, which was pending for long time and, which was written off as a unsuccessful project is finally being realised only because of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa’s faith on the project.
Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj said that the development objectives of the project is to strengthen the economic base, rejuvenate vacant underutilised areas, improve public transit and transport system along the river, minimise the impact of incompatible land uses and provide a balance of land uses etc. He said that the waterfront development is laid on the principle of connecting the adjoining neighbourhood and the city, rather than separating them. “In order to achieve the objectives, we propose a multi-disciplinary team of experts comprising of urban planners, urban infrastructure planners, engineers, architects, transport engineers, financial analysts etc,” said the DC.
No land acquisition
Deputy Commissioner said that there will be no compulsory land acquisition for the project as the project plans to pool land together. “Though the road will be developed on 100 ft area, the planning will be done ten times the said area. The project will only re-develop or re-model the city through land pooling,” said the DC. KSIIDC Managing Director Vanditha Sharma, PWD Superintending Engineer B S Balakrishna, City Municipal Commissioner Dr Vijayprakash others were present.

MANGALORE: The “dream project” of the Dakshina Kannada district administration, Mangala Corniche, riverfront development project, has finally started to take shape.
(Corniche refers to a coastal road with wide views.)
Following a meeting in Bangalore three months ago, where the project was given an in-principle go-ahead by the Urban Development Minister, the first technical discussion on the project was held at the Deputy Commissioner's on Tuesday.
The meeting was convened under the leadership of Yogish Bhat, MLA, who has been one of the prime proponents of the project in the State Assembly.
A Gujarat-based consultancy firm made a presentation at the meeting which was also attended by senior officials from the Karnataka State Industrial Investment and Development Corporation (KSIIDC), Mangalore Urban Development Authority, Mangalore City Corporation and the Coastal Development Authority.
Four-lane road
The Mangala Corniche project's main feature will be a 30-km, 100-feet-wide, four-lane ring road that will be built in five phases and will touch the three national highways (17, 48 and 13) in the region.
Phase-I will connect Ullal bridge to Kuloor bridge along the Gurpur, phase-II will connect Kuloor bridge to Maravoor bridge, phase-III will connect Ullal bridge to Kannur along the Netravati, phase-IV will connect Maravoor bridge to Gurpur bridge and phase-V will connect Gurpur bridge to Kannur.
Barring the stretch to be developed in phase-V, the entire roadway will run along the riverfront.
Mr. Bhat, who is also the Chairman of the KSIIDC, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the aim was to finish the project in three years.
“The expected cost is Rs. 3,000 crore. A large portion of this money will be raised by involving private investors,” he said, and added that this would be the first such attempt in the country.
A special purpose vehicle, for which the Deputy Commissioner will be the convener, will start functioning under the Urban Development Department for the project's implementation.
He said it would be a toll-free road. “Investors will be compensated in other ways. The land in the areas adjoining the corniche will see tremendous appreciation. The investors will be given rights to develop these areas for residential, commercial and tourism purposes,” Mr. Bhat said.
‘Not just a ring road'
Cautioning against perceiving Mangala Corniche as “just another ring road project”, Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj said that it would change the physical landscape of the city and economic potential of the entire region. A major chunk of the work in the project would involve the construction of “feeder roads” leading to the ring road.
Asked how land would be acquired for the feeder roads, Mr. Bhat said that he would not like to use the word “land acquisition”. A programme that would make local communities stakeholders for their own development was being planned, he said.

Not sure they could build an International cricket stadium here.Land should be demarcated for commercial, tourism ,recreational(park)and residential use.
If Murthy could do a rough sketch...may be we could send it to the DC thro Dex or DR Bhandary or any one else

NH-48 branches to NH-234 at Uppinangady in Belthangady taluk of DK district. The NH-234, which starts from Mangalore at Mahavir Circle, connects Belthangady, Mudigere, Belur, Huliyar, Sira, Madhugiri, and Chintamani in Karnataka, Venkatagiri, Kota in AP, Pernampet, Gidiyattam, Katpadi, Vellore, Pushpagiri and Polur. It ends at Tiruvanamalai-Villupuram in Tamil Nadu. In other words NH-48 and NH-234 are same road in the stretch Mangalore-Uppinangady.

Ajay, I think you are more interested in the feeder roads. That we can list down textually to start with. And finally if needed can represent in a sketch.
One thing is that as most of feeder roads intersect ring road at T they can design it signal free with a underpass and a flyover. And they have to provide pedestrian subways to bus bays at the river side of the road and to other places of interest on the river side.
Also I think at interesction with highways and other important roads they may opt for multilevel flyovers. (I do not know exact terminology for this, so used multilevel. Somewhat similar to the one in Hebbal in Bangalore).

Krishnamoorthy K September 23rd, 2010, 03:33 PM Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Billionaire Vijay Mallya’s fertilizer unit plans to build a 4 billion rupee ($88 million) plant to meet a shortfall in crop nutrient supply in India.
Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd.’s proposed plant will make nutrients based on nitrogen, phosphate, potash or diammonium phosphate, A. Rudrachary, senior vice president, said in an interview. The company is in talks with global suppliers of ammonia and phosphoric acid, key ingredients in making fertilizer, to form a joint venture.
“From the moment that’s decided, it will take at least two years” to set up the plant with a daily capacity of 1,500 metric tons, Rudrachary said. “The supply of phosphoric acid is crucial and we import it now.”
Demand for urea, the most commonly used nitrogenous crop nutrient, in India is about 27 million tons annually, while supply is 20 million tons a year, according to the Fertilizer Association of India. The country is the largest producer and consumer of fertilizer after China and the U.S. and imports nearly one third of its total requirement. It is the biggest importer of potash, according to a July 6 report by Religare Technova Ltd.
Shares of the Bangalore-based company, which have risen 62 percent this year, fell 1.7 percent to 34.90 rupees at 2:32 p.m. in Mumbai. The new facility will be built on land next to the company’s existing plant near the southern city of Mangalore.
Mangalore Chemicals plans to spend another 4 billion rupees to convert its urea plant running on naphtha to gas, Rudrachary said. The cost of producing fertilizer with naphtha is more than double compared with natural gas, for which the government sets the price and allocates supply.
The conversion will depend on when the company gets supply of gas from state-run companies, Rudrachary said.
“The timeframe we are looking at is 2013,” he said.
The company will invest 440 million rupees in the year to March 31 to set up facilities to make water soluble fertilizers and sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde, an additive used in cement, and to upgrades plants, Rudrachary said.

Looks like they have dropped the plan of selling plant to RIL.
Krishnamoorthy K September 23rd, 2010, 03:36 PM MUMBAI: Leading private sector ship-builder Bharati Shipyard on Thursday admitted that its Mangalore facility is behind schedule and blamed the delays to pending government clearances and difficulty in land acquisition.
"There is a slight delay in Mangalore because of the government approvals," Managing Director P C Kapoor told reporters after its annual general meeting here.
Stating that "it is a minor delay", Kapoor refused to offer any time for completion. Asked if its issues related to land acquisition is impeding the progress of the project, he said, "yes, land acquisition and other government approvals (are delaying it)."
The Mangalore yard is the company's sixth facility and is being built on the banks of Gurpur river. The yard will have a capacity to build up to 60,000 DWT on completion.
"Delay at the Dabhol or Mangalore yard could adversely affect operational capacity," the company said in its annual report. However, Kapoor pointed out that the work on the Dabhol yard on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra is on track.
To a query on Great Offshore (GO), Kapoor said the company has no immediate plans to increase its stake in GO from the current 49 per cent. Bharati had beat rival ABG after a sustained battle for control over GO late last year.
On fund raising, Kapoor said, the GO shareholders had in April passed an enabling resolution to raise up to Rs 1,730 crore and the company will be deciding on how much to raise and which route to take in the next six to nine months depending on market conditions.

Thankfully there are a lot of people, who think about the betterment of Mangalore without any personal interest in it...like our very own SSCI :)
Dr. Bhandary mentioned he gets such feeds from lot of people from different walks of life..Ideas are then collated, deliberated, discussed with various stakeholders...well, thats the thing with democracy...we have to take people on board...atleast the majority of them :)
So hopefully we may see some traction in Corniche project, Central market plans, parking plans, etc in the coming months...
If we discuss something concrete here about the Corniche project...I can pass on the details to DC through Dr. Bhandary.....I`ll see if I can reach MLA Yogish Bhat too who is pretty excited on this project...

Mangalore Sept 23: Mangalore perhaps will go down the in development chart as one the fastest developing cities in the country and the satellite mapping of the city that the Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has abundantly depicted it and in some respects it matches the State capital.
However in traffic management the Mangalore city has drawn flak as it has been rated as one of the most unscientific traffic management and control systems among the four City Corporations in the state. Unabashedly the city also houses one of the most unpractical traffic lights situated at all the wrong places and wrong turns.
The city's traffic signals needs serious upgradation as the traffic has increased three fold since the traffic lights were introduced in 1985. The traffic signals were designed to a city with 60,000 vehicles according to 1981 census, 4 years prior to the actual erection of the traffic signals. In the last 18 years the same traffic signal circuit has continued plunging the traffic and pedestrian movement into doldrums in the city.
There are atleast six places in the city where traffic bottlenecks are experienced on a day to day basis as a result of the wrong traffic management. The Hampankatta circle is one of the major circles not only in Mangalore but also in the state where nearly 75,000 vehicles pass through in a day and at peak hours over 40,000 vehicles pass according to the estimation of the district authorities which has been quoted by the NTMA annals. The Hampankatta is equated with the traffic density of K.R. Circle of Bangalore which is one of the largest circles in the country.
At Hampankatta recently the government has installed the solar traffic signals which have left much to be desired. The system has an inbuilt programme that has left out the left turn indicator for the motorists coming from the K.S.Rao Road. Turning towards the Light House hill road has become an ordeal as the motorists are left to take their own decision. There is no indication either for the controlled left turn or the free left, as a result the Pedestrians will have to wriggle through the left turning traffic leading to altercations between the pedestrians and motorists and the traffic police on both KSR Road and the LH Road.
On the same circle the traffic coming from the LH Road turning towards the Falnir Road (opposite Taj Mahal Hotel) has been so diverted that the traffic joins in a tangent way creating a bottleneck opposite the Milagres Church. To add to the woes of the motorists bang on this spot sits the Milagres bus Stand making the situation even worse. The panel showing second clock facing the traffic on Maidaan road has blanked out within in short time. This traffic jam spot is in a no horn zone as it is situated in the ear shot of the Wenlock hospital but there is no `no horn' signpost anywhere in the vicinity.
The newly installed traffic lights opposite the Government college to regulate the traffic coming from the Hampankatta and the GHS road is been put off for the reason known only to the Traffic Police. The Traffic from GHS road turns perpendicular into the Hampankatta-Nehru Maidan road choking the free flow of traffic, the road is though the widest at this point there is a danger of side impact accidents to the motorists coming from the GHS road at this point as there is atleast a kilometer long stretch open to the traffic coming from the Hampankatta towards A.B. Shetty circle. Here also there is no proper Pedestrian crossing.
Traffic signals at Jyothi circle, PVS circle, Nanthoor Circle are though operating they are not serviced as many of the direction indicators are not working. The traffic light panel that facing the Kudmul Ranga Rao Road at the PVS circle is on the verge of collapse but some concerned policeman had stopped it from collapse by tying it with a string of cable. At Saibeen circle the traffic signal is easy for the City buses to jump as the short stretch between the signal light and the bus bay (opposite the MCC complex) as the drivers show scant respect for the signal at this point. However here also the Pedestrian safety is at great risk!

Naina J A
To check the increase in traffic and to provide a permanent city and service bus stand, the district administration has decided to shift the bus stand to Pumpwell, writes Naina J A.
Mangalore city will be a mini metro with several mega projects coming up in and around the city in the next few years. With this, the traffic within the City too is likley to increase, thus creating traffic jams and putting the public into hardship. With this in mind, the authorities have decided to go ahead with the proposal for the shifting of the bus stand.
It is said that a city’s quality of life is portrayed in its transport system and the bus stand for the common man. Unfortunately, the service and city bus stand in State Bank area is highly congested. Over the years, the State Bank area in Mangalore has emerged as the heart of Mangalore, owing to the location of the city and service bus stands in the area. However, the condition in the State Bank area is utterly chaotic, signifying apathy of the local authorities in improving the prevailing conditions. A glance at this city bus stand is enough to understand the plight of the people waiting for the buses in the absence of shelters. The only development that has taken place in the area is the concreting of the road. Though the service bus stand exists in the region, it too is congested. As a result, the city continues to labour under the congested temporary service and city bus stand and the State Bank area is yet to be liberated from its position as official bus terminal.
Realising the increasing traffic and density of vehicles within the city, the district administration, Mangalore City Corporation and Transport departments have decided to shift the city and service bus stand to Pumpwell and the process has already begun.
Background
In fact, it was previous Deputy Commissioner Bharatlal Meena who had earmarked sites for bus stands; at Kottara, for buses coming from Udupi side, and at Mallikatta, for buses coming from Moodbidri and Karkala and from Bantwal. The Central bus stand was planned at Karangalpady after the proposed shifting of the district sub jail to some other location. However, for various reasons, the proposals could not be given a shape.
In fact, Mangalore City Corporation previous Commissioner J R Lobo had identified a site for the central bus stand near Mahaveera Circle. But despite the initiative by Lobo and the former mayors Devanna Shetty, Ramesh Kotian and Hilda Alva to have a decentralised bus stand, the City Council did not show interest in the proposal, which later got shelved.
Speaking to City Herald, Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Dr Vijayaprakash said that 18 acres land have been acquired for the bus stand. “In the first stage, 11.2 acre land was acquired and in the second stage, the remaining land was acquired. In fact, we have invited tender for the filling of the acquired land for the bus stand.”
Stating that it would be a mega project in collaboration with the transport department, he said “the bus stand will not be just a routine bus stand, it will have commercial complex and so on.”
The shifting of the bus stand is necessitated with the increase in traffic. It will help in reducing the traffic in the city. There will be feeder bus service to connect the termini to the city.
Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj says that the shifting of the bus stand is inevitable following the increase in the denisty of vehicles. Once the new bus stand comes up, the entire problem of traffic congestion and the barrier of DM (District Magistrate) notification denying new permits from the State Bank area will be solved. The proposed project will put up a ‘transportation hub’ having flow of public, private and inter-state buses along with various facilities for the commuters.
Bus owners view
Canara Bus Owners Association President Rajavarma Ballal said the shifting of the service and city bus stand to Pumpwell will create lot of inconvenience to the public. “Villagers who come to Mangalore city for official work will have to get down at Pumpwell and take another bus to reach the destination, which will be unnecessary burden on the poor.”
The reason for shifting of the bus stand is to reduce the traffic congestion in the city. However, if the entry of city and service buses are banned, then the authorities will have to introduce feeder buses from the new bus stand to run inside the city, which will also create traffic. “We have been demanding the authorities to allow those buses which already have permit to ply to State Bank and issue new permits for the buses from the new bus stand. In fact, the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Taluk office will not change. So people require frequent bus services to these destinations. We do not have any problem, if the authorities go for the setting up of satellite bus stands in the City.”

May be we could collate all previous photos of flyovers,Mangala Corniche, ideas about the proposed world class Mangalore station with a bus stand, the proposed skybus /metro project, feeder cxonnections to Mangala corniche(one near Mangalore club area and another needed where it goes past bunder so as to let some traffic from Hamkankatta going north thro the ring road.Mr Rajavarma Ballal of DK transport association is against the shifting of the bus stand from State Bank to the termini. The reasons are the same reasons what they gave when Bharatlal Meena wanted to do the same but then the Pvt operators blocked the entire city. I think what is important is to have discussions with the private operators and how to go forward. You need feeder buses from Pumpwell to the City. Will these buses be KSRTC or Private, the number you need etc.Other option tpo cosnider is if we could have something like elevated transport from Pumpwell to the city,Airport,Mangalore junction so as to reduce the dependence on buses. The other option is to give permit for buses which use green technology as in some other states.

sharifyaseen September 28th, 2010, 06:16 AM Mangalore, Sep 27, DH News Service:
Come October 14, Mangaloreans can sail down to the Lakshadweep islands from their own shores rather than going as far as Kochi.
The Lakshadweep Development Corporation will operate its shipping services, fulfilling what had been a long cherished dream of many in the city.
With the vessel setting sail, people travelling from here to Lakshadweep can enjoy the dream-like vista provided by tropical islands—clear waters, coral reefs and marine species—as they cruise through some of the thickest forest covers of the country they had only seen in pictures.
Talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of a programme here, Lakshadweep tourism co-ordinator in Mangalore Rasheed Bolar said he had approached the district administration in April through Lakshadweep Development Corporation Ltd with a proposal to start a vessel service between Lakshadweep and Mangalore old port.
The Deputy Commissioner had in turn forwarded the proposal to the state and Central governments and received a positive response that resulted in preparations for the first voyage in little more than two weeks.
The first vessel will take tourists to Agatti and Kavaratti and will return on October 16. Rasheed said the tariff for the voyage will be known next week.
Reef route
Since the only coral reef route is on the Western side, Rasheed said tourists would prefer the route from Mangalore, providing a big boost to the city’s tourism industry. The policies of the Kerala government may have helped increase traffic to the islands from Kochi, but many would prefer Mangalore as the launching port for the scenic view. The new route will also make half-a-dozen islands accessible for those travelling from here, as Kiltan—the nearest island from Mangalore—is a mere 252 km away and another islet, Minicoy, is 537 km.
The service also reduces the time taken to visit Lakshadweep to just 12 hours. Rasheed said permit to visit the islands can be obtained from Mangalore itself.
The Lakshadweep Development Corporation would operate 21 trips between Mangalore and the islands from October to May, when the service will break for the monsoon season.

rajone September 28th, 2010, 03:25 PM Now, cruise from M’lore to Lakshadweep
This was long over due....:)
We had discussed about this a few months ago in this thread.
In the report it says that the cruise will start from the old Mangalore port (Bundar), rather it would be better if it started from New Mangalore port which is bigger and better. Also I had read some news about NMPT constructing a passenger terminal. This would be ideal for such operations.
Also a regular passanger ship service to Mumbai will also be a success I guess.

Besides economy, Mangalore is the second city of Karnataka in many respects like- Aviation, Heavy Industries, revenue generation, etc.
Mangalore stands first when indices like literacy, Average income, cars per 1000 people, per capita consumption of electricity etc are taken into consideration. In short an average Mangalorean has a higher standard of living compared to citizens of other cities.

Mangalore stands first when indices like literacy, Average income, cars per 1000 people, per capita consumption of electricity etc are taken into consideration. In short an average Mangalorean has a higher standard of living compared to citizens of other cities.
I agree no arguments on that---:)
gentem October 1st, 2010, 08:47 AM Releasing the study, the Assocham Secretary General, D. S. In Ranchi, the top five sectors which have created maximum job prospects include energy, construction, metals, electronics and telecom. In case of Mangalore, the top 5 sectors are engineering, energy, banking, insurance, FMCG and in Mysore automobiles, insurance, pharma, manufacturing and education have provided highest employment opportunities.

It is interesting to see Mangalore's population after the census,Mangalore lost JNNURM only because of population inspite of emerging as the growth engine of the state.Mysore got JNNURM under category C -Heritage cities.

Mangalore has grown by itself, meaning to say that development of various industries like banking, finance etc has been more due to private enterprise with almost no Govt. support.
The Govt. grants to Mangalore have been few and far in between. (Though this has changed in last 3 to 4 years)
Mangalore has the potential. With proper support by the state Govt. Mangalore can be the most important city on the west coast of India after Mumbai.

Yes, when it comes to finance/banking and even aviation, mangalore has inherent geographical advantage over mysore. That is because mysore is close to bangalore, instead of regional finance headquarters in mysore they will go to bangalore. Again most mysoreans use bangalore airport and travel by road, instead of waiting hours for connecting flight..
As for state govt funding, no other city in karnataka got that much concrete roads, including even bangalore, returns for voting bjp..

I don't think geographical advantage is the reason for Manglore being ahead of Mysore. Proximity to Bangalore may be the reason for lack of flights between B'lore and Mysore what about the other routes (Mysore and rest of India?). Being geographically closer to large city has both advantages and dis-advantages.
Around six national banks have been founded in Mangalore region and I don;t think geography has a major part to play in this. Also this region has the highest density of banks in India, again geography has minimal influence in this.
The only geographical advantage Mangalore has when compared to other cities in Karnataka is it being on the coast, hence boasts of a port.
Geographic advantage is one of the reasons for development or the lack of it for a region or city, but it is not the only reason.

Funding for concrete road is just a small component. We are talking about the whole city.
City like Mangalore with high rainfall needs concrete roads and naturally will get more compared to other cities.

INAUGURATION ON 24.10.10
engineer.akash October 2nd, 2010, 02:44 AM MCC to have Canadian partner
Vinobha K T, October 2
The development concept adopted by the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) as well as infrastructure including airport, railway stations and the sea port have grabed the attention of the Corporation of Delta, British Columbia, Canada.
It is a pride for the citizens of Mangalore that Mayor of Corporation of Delta Louise Jackson along with a team of officials will arrive in Mangalore and sign a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MCC Mayor Rajani Dugganna aiming at putting collaborative effort and initiative to develop two cities with a ‘twin city’ concept.
MCC is all set to extend a traditional welcome to Louise Jackson and her team including Chief Administrative Officer George Harvie and Administrative Manager Mangit Kiala, who will arrive in Mangalore on October 11. Speaking to City Herald, MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash said that the main objective of their visit is to build a bi-lateral relationship, wherein best practices of both cities will be exchanged. “Both mayors will sign an MoU on October 12, which is aimed at development of cities economically, educationally and to exchange the cultural values. Collaborative efforts will be made and initiatives will be taken to foster cross-cultural exchange.
The tourism potential in both cities will be linked and technology available in the agriculture and other sectors will be exchanged,” he said adding that discussions will be held with officials and elected representatives and later Louise Jackson will also interact with the mediapersons.
An eight-page brochure will be prepared by the MCC to highlight the cultural, economical and educational significance of Mangalore City and it will be handed over to the Mayor of Corporation of Delta, Vijayaprakash said. The team will be in Mangalore for three days and will leave the City on October 14 after visiting important places, he added.
Why Mangalore?
Explaining how Mangalore has been chosen by the Corporation of Delta for visit, Vijayaprakash said that it was a presentation on Mangalore City’s development made by former Mayor M Shanker Bhat at Bangkok in 2009 prompted the officials of Corporation of Delta to choose the City for the implementation of collaborative develoment programme.
Shanker Bhat said that Mangalore City was one of the four cities in India, which were short-listed from 120 cities across the world by the British Columbia Trade and Cultural Development Foundation.
The Foundation, which has offices in New Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai, is working with an obective of linking cities. Though there were Vishakhapatnam, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram in the shortlist, Mangalore has been chosen finally since the City has all infrastructure including sea port, international airport and railway stations.
Further, advancement in the education sector too has attracted the attention of the Foundation, Bhat said. The team from Corporation of Delta was expected to visit Mangalore in February 2009. However, due to technical reasons, the visit has been delayed, he added.

ajay ramchandran October 3rd, 2010, 01:19 PM Multi-level car park plan hits roadblock
Jaideep Shenoy, TNN, Mar 1, 2010, 10.33pm IST
Article
Tags:multi-level car parking|mangalore city corporationMANGALORE: Authorities have adopted the carrot and stick policy to get the city's first multi-level car parking project off the ground. The project to be executed by Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) with Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) hinges on owners of 45 cents of private property abutting the old service bus station at Hampankatta here coming on board the PPP route chosen by MUDA to execute the project.
The MCC has 1.55 acres of land at its disposal in the old service bus stand area and needs the private property to give a final shape to the project. However, the owners of the property have thrown a spanner in the works. This has got the district administration thinking on acquiring the property while still hoping to get the property owners on board.
DC V Ponnuraj told TOI that the administration has gone a step ahead in planning with an idea to acquire smaller buildings abutting the project area. "We have in mind the Dhanyavad building, Sheesh Mahal, Catholic Club and other smallerbuildings; preliminary talks with building owners in them giving up the property has been positive," he said.
Ownership for 32 years
The project which will be executed on build operate transfer (BOT) model will provide ownership of this property in the heart of the city for a period of 32 years, including 2 years for construction of the multi-level car parking project and commercial building. After this period, during which the project promoter will pay concession amount to MCC, the property will revert to the civic body, he said. The project that entails a constructed area of 3-4 lakh sq.ft. envisages creating parking for 1,000 vehicles including those of occupants of the building.
"We have in-principle agreed to the demand of property owners to go in for an outward entrance to the building and it is for them to take a call," he said.
Former mayor M Shankar Bhat before demitting office had approved an agenda in anticipation of the council ratifying it later to acquire the 45 cents of land if the owners fail to see reason. The DC said the owners will be the losers in the eventuality that the land has to be acquired to see the project through. The additional land (apart from 45 cents) has been factored in to take up further expansion of the MLCP project if needed, he said.

MANGALORE: The State Government has given administrative approval for the third stage of the development (jetty expansion) of the fisheries harbour here, according to N. Yogish Bhat, MLA.
Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Mr. Bhat said that the completion of the third stage of expansion of the harbour would particularly help fishermen as 400 to 500 more fishing boats could be anchored there. At present, about 400 boats can be anchored. The jetty would be expanded towards the Hoige bazaar side. The work was estimated to cost Rs. 57.6 crore. Of this, the Union Government would provide Rs. 43.2 crore (75 per cent) and the rest would be borne by the State. The Union Government had so far released Rs. 5 crore. Bids would soon be invited for this project, he said.
The State had given the administrative approval for jetty expansion on September 24, he added.

DISCUSSION:Rajani Duganna (centre), Mayor, at the city corporation council meeting in Mangalore on Thursday.
MANGALORE: Mayor Rajani Dugganna said on Thursday that patchwork on roads in the city will begin in November, even as the Government has sanctioned another special grant of Rs. 100 crore to the civic body.
She told the monthly meeting of the Mangalore City Corporation council that the junior engineers of the corporation had been asked to prepare estimates for filling potholes on various roads.
Meeting proposed
Ms. Dugganna said that she would convene a meeting within a fortnight with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials to discuss shifting the water pipes at Padil on NH 48 and Kaikamba Junction (Kulashekara area) on NH 13 for widening the highways under the port connectivity project.
Allegation
Earlier, during Question Hour, Mariyamma Thomas, councillor, said that although the NHAI had deposited Rs. 14 crore with the city corporation long ago for shifting the pipelines, the latter had not yet completed the task. Since the pipeline at Padil and Kaikamba Junction had not yet been shifted, the widening work had come to a standstill. The NHAI had dropped the proposal to construct an overpass at Nanthoor Junction because Mescom had delayed shifting the underground electricity cable there, she said and urged the council to pass a resolution demanding that the NHAI construct the overpass.
Gopala Gowda, assistant executive engineer of the corporation, blamed the NHAI for not showing the civic body the corridor for shifting the pipeline.
Laxity
The former Mayor M. Shankar Bhat too blamed the NHAI for its laxity in this regard.
James D'Souza, councillor, said that the contractor of the port connectivity project, IRCON International Ltd., had not completed even a single overpass properly. He wanted to know why the Government had not taken any action against the company.
Committee
Opposition Congress councillors wanted to know if the corporation had constituted a core committee to decide on the projects to be taken up with the general fund of the corporation. They said that a decision to form such a committee had been taken at a meeting convened by district in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar However, there was no provision under the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976 for setting up such a committee when the civic body had other statutory committees to decide on the projects to be taken up, they said.
Objective
The Mayor said that such a decision had been taken to avoid the blame-game between the ruling party and the Opposition that works under the general fund were being cornered by one side. Such a committee was not legally valid. If the councillors did not want it, the proposal could be dropped after consulting the Minister, she said.

sharifyaseen October 6th, 2010, 05:17 AM MANGALORE: Bunts Hostel Circle - a city landmark with a history of nearly 100 years was razed down here on Tuesday. The Bunts alias Nadavara Mathr Sangha constructed the circle when the Sangha was set up a century ago. This circle was given a facelift two decades ago and remained one of the recognisable landmarks in the city. But its presence at a road junction was proving to be a severe impediment for movement of traffic.
Ajith Kumar Rai Maladi, president, Federation of World Bunts Association and former president of Bunts Sangha told TOI here on Tuesday that the circle had high sentimental value to the Bunts community. However, its presence at a vantage point, which has a high density of traffic, was proving to be a major bottleneck for free flow of traffic, Rai said adding that the Sangha agreed to a request from the authorities to remove the circle.
"We received requests from the deputy commissioner, commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation commissioner and even the police authorities to demolish the circle," Rai said adding that the Sangha voluntarily accepted their request. "We do not want sentiments to come in the way of development," he said adding that the Sangha has given up a part of its land at junction abutting the road towards Mallikatte to facilitate road widening there.
Rai said he had taken the onus on himself to construct a new circle at a short distance from the spot where the present circle was located on the road leading to Dr Ambedkar circle. The final design and other logistic of this new circle is being worked out, he said adding that the proposal would be placed before the Sangha for approval and final execution. The initial proposal was that the civic body would reconstruct the circle, he noted.
Contractors executing the road concreting work on the Bunts Hostel Circle - Mallikatte Road removed the traffic signal police erected adjacent to Pai Sales International showroom there later in the evening under the supervision of traffic police. The then DK district police had installed traffic signals at the Bunts Hostel Circle junction but was not in a position to make it operational until such time that the circle was removed.

This type of scheme is being implemented for the first time in the country. Here in Western countries whenever we accumulate trash we take to the recycling centres where there are huge continers for seperate items like wood, plastic, house hold waste, metals, card board.Seperate boxes for foot wear, papers, clothes. However we do not get paid. But this is a novel scheme and I hope other cities in India learn from this.

ananda.padebettu October 12th, 2010, 05:51 PM MCC warmly receives Mayor of Delta Louis E. Jackson
Mangalore Today News Network
Mangalore, Oct 12: Louis E. Jackson, the mayor of Delta, a province of British Columbia, visited Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) today to strengthen the newly established relationship between Mangalore and Delta. Accordingly, a memorandum was signed between the two to facilitate economic, social, and cultural collaboration and exchange. The team from Delta comprised Mayor Louis E. Jackson and two delegates from the Delta Corporation George V. Harvey and Manjith Kaila, who is also a British Columbia official, to finalize the MoU.
The Canadian delegation was welcomed in a traditional manner; and the MCC also presented an 8-page brochure on the heritage and development of Mangalore to the team. The delegates were then felicitated with a shawl, a peta, a memento, and fruits. The Mayor of Delta also presented a memento to Mayor Rajani Dugganna.
Speaking about the cultural heritage, traditions, and development in the city, the Commissioner of MCC Dr. K. N. Vijaya Prakash said that Mangalore is the 8th cleanest city in the world and is currently involved with a number of development projects such as Ropeway Bridge, Mangala Cornish, and others. Mayor Rajani Dugganna presided over the programme.
The team from Delta then interacted with the members of the MCC. Mayor of Delta Louis E. Jackson said that she personally listens to the problems of the citizens of Delta, who communicate with her via text messages and emails.
Regarding malaria control, she said that there are only a few cases of virus attack in Delta and only around 1000 homeless people, adding that the homeless are provided shelter via social networking.
Revealing details about building laws and parking policies in Delta, she said that all commercial buildings are required to provide parking facilities. The traffic in Delta is managed by the police department and the corporation’s engineer department, she added.
She also revealed that Delta elects its mayor directly and that she has been elected for the first time.
Regarding disaster management, she said that the corporation has an emergency plan, which is discussed at monthly meetings and changed if required. Stating that Delta’s waste management system was effective, she said that there are two types of garbage bins—one for newspapers and the other for leftovers. A truck carries the waste to recycling centres weekly and the waste is converted into steam or electricity without any smoke, she explained. She also said that water dues are collected from the people as per water used.
Regarding the selection of Mangalore, she said that various aspects were taken into consideration before the selection was made with the purpose of collaborating for development.
Manohar Prasad, the chief bureau of Udayavani, compered the programme; and Shanta R., the chairperson of the standing committee, proposed the vote of thanks. Later, the mayor and other members of the Canadian team addressed reporters at a press conference held in the mayor’s chamber. Commissioner of MCC Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, Deputy Mayor Rajendra Kumar, and former mayor Shankar Bhat were present during the press conference.

Dex_Mangalore October 15th, 2010, 09:05 AM MUMBAI: For 32-year-old industrialist Rishi Darda, it was a dream come true when more than 120 swanky Mercedes Benz cars were delivered in Aurangabad on Thursday by Benz managing director Wilfried Aulbur himself. In January 2010, some like-minded industrialists led by Darda had set up Aurangabad group to promote the bulk booking of Mercedes Benz cars.
Initially, the response was lukewarm in view of the huge cost of the car. However, later, when the group initiated a dialogue with leading financial institutions and the firm, there was a slow, but steady rise in club membership.
Between January and September, the membership crossed 160. As a result, the car manufacturing company decided to visit Aurangabad to deliver the cars. On Thursday, at a colourful function, Aulbur personally handed over the keys to 120-and-odd individuals. "Certainly, its a proud moment for all of us. It marks a different kind of development. It also indicates that Aurangabad has potential for development," said Darda.

MANGALORE: Residents of Mogaru and Badaga Ulipady villages, whose land is being acquired for the Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP) at Ganjimath, have said they are not keen to give up their properties.
A few representatives of some 50-odd properties, which they said have been notified for acquisition, told presspersons here on Friday that they preferred to retain the properties. The Karnataka Industrial Area Development, which has acquired 246 acres of land at Ganjimath, was now finalising acquisition of another 154 acres of land. Land was being surveyed and the KIADB officials were not giving a clear picture of their proposals, said M.B. Shetty, a resident of the area.
The other residents, who included rubber factory owner K.G. Shetty, said the KIADB was offering a mere Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 13,000 a cent as compensation for the land where as their demand was Rs. 1 lakh a cent. The present market price was Rs. 50,000 a cent, he said. They alleged that KIADB officials were not treating the property owners with dignity.

With permits not issued for city buses, this will become the third depot
— PHOTO: R. ESWARRAJ

NO ARRIVALS YET:The KSRTC Kuntikana depot.
MANGALORE: A new bus depot of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) at Kuntikana here will soon be ready. But the KSRTC will not be able to use it for the purpose for which it was being built, at least in the near future.
Sources in the KSRTC told The Hindu that the corporation had planned to devote this depot exclusively to handle city buses. But the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has not yet permitted the corporation to operate city buses. The KSRTC sought permits for 41 city buses for 396 trips on six routes in 2008.
The routes are Surathkal-Talapady (22 buses); Mangaladevi-Ambedkar Circle-Kunjathbail (nine buses); Mangaladevi-Ambedkar Circle-Bondel (six buses); State Bank of India-Car Street-Tannirbavi (one bus); State Bank of India-Chelyar-MRPL Colony (one bus) and State Bank of India–Amblamogaru (two buses).
Sources said it could handle 100 city buses in the new depot. Except the fuelling station, other infrastructure facilities at the new depot had been completed. The depot would be ready in a month.
Now, it was handling 145 buses in its depot number one at Bejai and 146 buses in depot number two in front of A.J. Hospital and Research Centre, sources said.
Sources made it clear that although its official records had nowhere “specifically mentioned” that the new depot was “meant for its proposed city buses”, its construction was taken up to handle proposed city buses separately without mixing them with other outstation buses.
They said now the KSRTC would be forced to use the new depot to handle other outstation buses. It was yet to take a decision on its future use.
Regional Transport Authority chairman V. Ponnuraj had gone on record that for the time being, the RTA would not issue new permits for any new buses, including KSRTC and private, to operate from the State Bank of India bus terminus as it would only add to traffic congestion in the central business district. The existing road infrastructure in the city did not support for handling more buses.
In addition, an earlier district magistrate had imposed a ban on issuing new permits for new buses to operate from SBI terminus.
However, the right to information activist like G. Hanumantha Kamath and KSRTC officials did not agree with the views of Mr. Ponnuraj. They say that if parking arrangement on main roads was properly managed more buses could be allowed.

Mangalore, Oct. 22
The Mangalore-based builder and developer — Connect Infrastructure and Projects Pvt Ltd — will launch a residential project in high-end villa segment called ‘Connect Park Wood' at Konaje (nearly 16 km from Mangalore).
Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Mr Umakant Alva, Managing Director of Connect Infrastructure and Projects Pvt Ltd, said that the first phase of the villa project will be launched on Saturday, and it will be completed in two years.
Around 80 villas will come up in the first phase, and 100 villas in the second phase, he said. The cost of the villa would start from Rs 70 lakh onwards.
Mr Alva said that Connect Park Wood is located at Konaje in a natural undulating setting amid the abundance of fully grown trees. “With a feel of traditional architecture from outside, every villa will be modern inside. All the elements used in the villa would be eco-friendly and designed to create a complete green environment,” he said, adding that Connect Infrastructure and Projects Pvt Ltd has entered into a partnership with BCIL Zed Homes for making each villa in the project energy-efficient.
Started in 1984, Connect Infrastructure and Projects Pvt Ltd has completed several layout projects in and around Mangalore, he added.

Raj,
The park looks awesome. I had visited Pilikula almost 5 years back. Then I could not visit the park due to shortage of time. However, the Zoo and Manasa Water park were awesome. Though they are in a small scale, enjoyment we get there is unlimited.

This pic was taken a couple of months back when I visited the place. The Zoo is good, especially the Tigers. One more interesting thing which I noticed is that boards mentions the names all the animals housed in the zoo in Tulu language.

Akash,
Did you notice one thing in Real Estate growth story of Mangalore??
The local players are doing well and also they give tough competetion for real big players like Godrej, Raheja or Brigade in this gorwing sector.
Is it not a good sign for amazingly growing city? The enteprenourship is growing among locals. I am sure this will take the city to the best, which is yet to come.

Yes you are right Ananda,it only means that local players have met the highest quality standards when it comes to execution, which otherwise is synonym only to big players. :)

Hi!
Pachhu--That is to keep a better track of the autos/better management for the RTOs
Say you end up having issues with an auto driver then you can report it to the control office/traffic police with the auto's 3 digit number and the the constituency name.

MANGALORE OCT 23 (TNN): There is a change of guard in the Dakshina Kannada district administrative set-up with Subodh Yadav, a 1999 batch IAS officer taking over as the 121st deputy commissioner (DC) here on Saturday. He replaces V Ponnuraj, who has been posted as DC of Shimoga district, the home district of CM B S Yeddyurappa. Yadav was personal secretary to the Union minister for law M Veerappa Moily, prior to his current posting.
Yadav, an M Tech graduate from IIT, New Delhi, had a previous stint in DK district serving as the chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat here from August 29, 2004 to May 31, 2005. He has served as deputy commissioner of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, and the CEO of Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat before his DK stint.
Informally chatting with media persons after assuming charge, Yadav said things have changed a lot in the city in the last five years. "The city has more cement concrete roads and there is a lot more development with bigger and taller buildings coming up," he remarked. The city also has a new airport, Yadav noted, adding that the city looks a whole lot different given its present characteristics of rapid urbanisation.
Assuring that he would continue the best practices put in place by his predecessor, Yadav said certain initiatives taken by Ponnuraj in computerisation of administration would be further strengthened. "I will make honest efforts to address various issues that the district faces," he said, adding that he would first assess the ground realities before announcing any major initiatives. The approach would be to give practical solutions to issues, he said.

Mangalore has good potential for cruise tourism. The number of cruise vessels calling on Mangalore Port has increased over last few years. Hope it picks up even more.
Its indeed a sight to see these cruise ships when they are docked at Mangalore port. You get a spectacular view of these vessels while travelling south from Panambur circle.

It was indeed a Visual treat :cheers:
it is not a treat after those wooden pillars erected for decoration is removed. big wholes on footpath make it unwalkable and wholes on road get bigger as vehicles travels by its sides. they should come up with a permanent arrangement for mounting these posts without harming footpath and road.

Dex_Mangalore October 25th, 2010, 02:22 PM I noticed a recent trend that the new circles coming up in Mangalore are quite large in size as usual. For e.g. Infront of Circuit House (Kadri Park), Marnamikatte, Valencia (this one is laughable- only one lane for traffic when compared to the size of the circle- totally disproportionate), AB Shetty Circle, etc.
When authorities are making away with circles like Bunts Hostel to streamline the traffic, I fail to understand the reason behind constructing bigger circles elsewhere.:ohno::ohno:
Any thoughts?

It is thoughtless to construct large circles when the road is narrow. After a year this will become a bottleneck if it is not already now and then we destroy it. Waste of Money. I have not seen them but could visualise.

Yes Dex_Mangalore, I really don't understand why are they building a circle at A.B. Shetty circle. This intersection should have traffic lights with no circle. MCC is proceeding in the right direction in Bunts hostel circle by removing the circle.
Another intersection in my opinion which needs to have traffic lights is the Navbharath circle.
rajone October 26th, 2010, 05:27 AM MANGALORE October 25, 2010: With increasing awareness about the importance of green cover all around, the city was now wearing a thick green cover, thanks to the urban planners in the city the citizens are co-operating with the civic bodies and green activists in turning Mangalore into an emerald city.
Almost every household in the city have started planting trees in their neighbourhood including fruit, berry and flower yielding trees. A drive through the city in the by-lanes will vouch for this beautiful development. "There has been increased demand for fruit bearing trees in the city. Individual householders are regularly visiting our nurseries and ask for fruit bearing trees, this trend has begun two years back and in the last two years we have distributed over 20,000 fruit and flower yielding trees in Mangalore and scores of shade yielding trees. The demand was increasing every year" say the forest department officials.
The most popular trees includes Jamboo (Malayan green apple) Rambutan, wild mango, Nerale (blueberry) Guava, Sapota, Gooseberry, Bimbli, Star fruit (Darae Huli) Tamarind, Surinam Cherry and even Mulberry. "These are very urban types of trees which grow without much ado but requires regular watering. The craze for coconut trees though continues to rule the roost, additional interest is generated for fruit bearing trees, which is a welcome sign, however we may not be able to plant these fruit trees in public places like roads as they may be subjected to vandalising. We do have planted Tamarind trees which are surviving" the official say.
Due to this development even the urban wildlife was improving in the city of Mangalore as well as towns like Moodbidri, Karkala, Udupi and other small towns. People have regularly started reporting sighting of urban wildlife forms like Beru (toddy cat), Peacocks, civet cats, flying squirrels, Pangolins, Porcupines, Mongooses and different kinds of rodents.
The city has also experienced the multiplication of birds also. According to wildlife observers parrots have started becoming common; this was due to the increasing population of Guava trees in the city. Peacocks have been sighted in places like Chilimbi, Ashoknagar and Kulur areas where the green belts have started developing extensively. Children in many schools have started discussing about the wildlife they have encountered in their respective localities.
The citizens have also started growing ornamental bamboos in their estates "Even if I have only two bamboos in my garden I will be satisfied, they look so beautiful and environmental friendly and each night when I see droplets of water falling down as it had rained even in the hottest summer" says Mr. Suresh Rao of Chilimbi.
The forest department has also started developing nurseries of very large trees called Seema Reuba which will be ready for planting in early next monsoons the officials say
