Yes Vinaya, even i was thinking the same. They should build a road bridge with at least 2 lanes. It will save about 10 km through kuloor to reach tannerbavi beach. Its really a waste of money to build pedestrian bridge.
:bash:

Visnaya and Kudlabobs

I think I agree with you. If you go on Mangalore Roads thread Moorthy has worked out a detailed plan for the Mangala Corniche and core ring road. Currently Bengre is not connected to CBD and the route through Tanirbhavi is too long and time consuming. TWO THINGS COULD BE DONE.

1. A connecting road from Mangala Corniche to Bengre and Bengre to CBD at a point near Taj Manjarun or somewhere near. That means a flyover has to come up.

2. Another point of connection from Bengere to SultaBattery ,agaoin a four lane elevated hanging bridge just like the Golden gate bridge with really wide pavements for pedestrians. The Mangala Corniche will still go underneath the bridge.

Good find. That means they are planning to demolish the business establishments. I think it is a good idea as there is enough space to have good broad pavements.

I think many business establishments want good frontage . That means the businsses will be located in the lower floors and parking will be on higher levels.Sadly the idea of TTMC's in the ground floor might not materialise.

Guys I am having a long weekend. Today is a Hoilday for us.( From Friday till tomorrow!) and then again this Friday till 3'rd May.At this rate UK economy will never improve!

I am of the opinion that the proposed Ambedkar Bhavana should be constructed at the site allocated for Tulu Bhavana. I think Ambedkar Bhavana mainly is a community hall. As Tulu Bhavana is for academic and cultural activities it could be shifted to Mangala Gangothri or Pilikula were cultural village & museum is there. But, I love if Tulu Bhavana is a riverfront Museum.

I have assumed that proposed site for Tulu Bhavana is not a part of Radio Park. If both Ambedkar Bhavana and Tulu Bhavana are coming up in Radio Park then both needs to be shifted to some other location.

-----------------------------------------
Whether CRZ norms permit Cricket SStadium at Bangra Kulooru? What about CRZ against Mangala Corniche?

Tulu Bhavan and cultural academy should come in atleast few acreas of land. I would suggest at least 25 Acres. It should be a place all Tulu manuscripts, old guttu houses, temples, Bhuta and naga sites, Jain basadi, Old mangalore muslim mosque are replicated with good explanation. There should be Tulu ranga Bhumi like Yakshgana, bayalata, musical nights, Atigana and Drama are depicted every evening. It should be single point place for study and display of Tulunadu and culture. All still statue, picture and shilpakala, handicraft are depicted. it should show the places where Tulunadu has influence like Bombay, Nepal ( temple preiest), Bhadridam, dwaraka, kashi, Mantrlaya, Tirupathi, Tulu people contribution in Movie. Pilekula would be a ideal place. or Bangra Kulur on one side higway and other side river.

People can add more idea...

One more thing I saw is realestate boom. Every one talk about site rates and flat rates.

1. Gandhinagar, Mannagudda, car street, falner land are tradeing at 12- 15 Lacs/ cents ( belive it or not)
2. Airport road, kapikad, bejai are trading at 8- 10 lacs/cents
3. Good flates are trading at 4,000 - 4,500/sq.ft
4. All most all Flats ( 5,000 of them) are got booked ( don't know how much is booble)
5. Many of my friends have shifted from near by vilage to mangalore now. Like from Puttur, bantwal, kasargod, belthangadi, moddabedri.
6. I saw one posh flat near collector gate that is from Mothi shams "West Wind". It is a Kerala style, 17 floor Building. Has all best amnities. Interior and loby looks like 5 star hotel.

So nut shall Mangalore is booming...........

Mangalore Apr 26: Main Line container vessel of Delmas Line M.V. O.S. Sumsun from East Africa (Port Matwara) called at New Mangalore Port on April 23, 2011. This is the first mainline vessel which calls at the Port during the current financial year 2011-12.

The vessel completed its operation of unloading 327 Boxes of Raw cashew for distribution among various cashew processing units situated in and around Mangalore and 23 TEUs of teakwood and sailed out on 24th April 2011. The vessel also loaded 7 export containers stuffed with cashew kernels and jute bags.
The advantage of Main Line vessel directly calling at the Port is the lesser transit time and lesser handling cost. It will take only 9 days between Mangalore and East Africa whereas vessels via Colombo will take 21 days.

The exporters can utilize the advantage of moving their export cargo since the vessel is touching Singapore and Far East countries in the return voyage.

“Main Line vessels directly calling at the Port has resulted in upward growth of container traffic” says NMPT chairman P Tamilvanan.

While requesting all the MLOs and Users to make use of the advantageous position of lesser transit time and lesser handling cost, he has further added that a record qty of 40,158 TEUs of container traffic handled during 2010-11 as against 31,456 TEUs handled during the corresponding period of previous year registering a growth rate of 27.66%.

The Main Line operators while expressing their happiness over the performance of the vessel at NMPT is keen in calling more main line vessels and few more main line vessels are expected to call NMPT shortly.

Kin-ship Services India Pvt. Ltd., Mangalore are the agents of the vessel. The next mainline vessel is expected by first week of May 2011.

MANGALORE: About 35 per cent of work on the underground cavern project of Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Limited (ISPRL) in Mangalore has been completed, Mohandas Kamath, Director (Projects, NIG and Rich Infrastructure Private Limited), has said.

He was speaking on “ISPRL's crude oil storage cavern project” at a programme hosted by the Institution of Engineers (India), Mangalore Local Chapter, here on Tuesday.

The first stage of the project is on. Work on the three-stage project began in April 2008.

He said the underground cavern project was for strategic storage of crude oil, required to provide supplies during emergencies.

It could store crude oil to meet the country's demand for 15 days in case of an emergency. It assumed significance because India would depend on oil imports for 92 per cent of its crude oil needs by 2020, and because of the volatility in West Asia, he said.

MANGALORE: The State Government's ambitious plan to offer chopper services for the well-heeled tourists to select heritage sites of the State will begin in 15 days, according to Tourism Minister G. Janardhan Reddy, who was in Dharmasthala on Wednesday to take part in a mass marriage programme.

Previously, government functionaries have gone on record saying that the heritage circuit will cover Hampi, Badami, Pattadakal, Aihole and Bijapur.

The Minister said that the decision to operate chopper services to the three other circuits will be taken depending on the response to helitourism for the heritage circuit.

The Government had, earlier, announced the following other circuits: Mangalore, Udupi, Kundapur, Gokarna and Karwar (Coastal circuit); Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Hassan (Malnad circuit); and Kollur, Udupi, Hornadu, Sringeri, Karkala, Dharmasthala and Kukke Subramanya (Religious or Pilgrimage circuit).

Mr. Reddy said that the State Government had sanctioned Rs. 30 crore to each of the three coastal districts for tourism development and Rs. 50 crore for the development of Kemmangundi. In addition, Rs. 10 crore has been sanctioned for developing roads in and around Kemmangundi.

Mangalore, April 28: The Mangalore City Corporation has embarked on a mission to dispose of the electronic waste in association with Sarvodaya Jagruti Trust, a non-governmental organization.

After symbolically launching the e-waste procurement drive by dumping an outdated tape recorder into a small bin in front of Bharat the Mall at Bejai here MCC Commissioner K N Vijayprakash said the the civic body would announce after five days the collection centres for such waste generated in the city.

He said that initially e-waste would be collected on a trial basis with the help of Trust on a 7-km stretch from Infosys in Kottara to Mphasis in Morgan's Gate. The trust would send the waste to “e-parisara”, a government authorised e-waste recycler in Bangalore.

“The city produced about two tonnes of e-waste daily. The e-waste collected separately from people would be stored at a place in Vamanjoor. After the collection reaches a tonne, it would be sent to Bangalore”, he said.

The Commissioner said that according to a Supreme Court ruling and as per Karnataka Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, e-waste should not be mixed with other solid waste. It was because e-waste contained dangerous substances such as lead, mercury and cadmium.

According to Hazardous Waste (management and handling) Rules, 1989 e-waste collected separately should be sent to government authorised e-waste recyclers.

Vinita Rai, programme officer, National Service Scheme, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, said that NSS volunteers of the school would collect e-waste from people after June.

To a question, she said that the volunteers would either collect it from nearby places once in a while or people could hand it over at the NSS unit at the school. She said that people could call her on ph: 9343565817 regarding handing over e-waste to the NGO.

Mallikarjun, manager, Bharat Mall, said that a bin would be kept at the entrance of the mall from tomorrow for dumping e-wastes.

Mayor Praveen was present.

25 acres is good enough for having Tulu-Koraga, Beary academies together in a campus as separate blocks with all facilities.

In Urwa Stores we can also have a mini Ambedkar Garden along with Ambedkar Bhavana.

Mumbai, April 25:
Tata Consultancy Services will spend an all-time high sum of Rs 2,300 crore in annual capital expenditure for the fiscal 2011-12, a top company official has indicated. This marks a 35 per cent increase from the software exporter's capex spend of Rs 1,700 crore last fiscal.

“Majority of the spend will be on physical infrastructure…We are bringing up lot of new facilities in Pune, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Mangalore etc,” Mr S Mahalingam, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director, told Business Line.

The company is also planning to expand its existing overseas centres.

However, there are no new overseas centres on its radar for the time being.

TCS has already committed capex for around one lakh seats to be built over the next three years, said Mr N. Chandrasekaran, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director.

TCS had initially planned to spend Rs 2,100 crore in capex during the previous fiscal.

However, some of its investment plans got pushed forward owing to non-availability of construction labourers.

“Things were not derailed but were going a bit slowly. Labour availability was a bit of a problem,” said Mr Mahalingam.

Shortage of labourers

Analysts say cities are facing shortage of labourers as the construction workers are being lured by jobs offered under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

The NREGA, which guarantees a minimum of 100 days of employment in a financial year to rural households, is deterring labourers from parts of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal to migrate to cities in search of work

Mangalore, April 25:
The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the Mangalore Mayor to improve water supply to the city keeping in mind the demand for the next 25 years.

The KCCI President, Mr G.G. Mohandas Prabhu, who submitted a memorandum to the Mangalore Mayor, Mr Praveen, recently, said that the growth of trade and industry in the next 25 years should be kept in mind while planning water supply facility to the city. This will help ensure continuous supply , he said.

Other demands in the memorandum included improvement in the road and market infrastructure in the city.

Road connectivity

Mr Prabhu said that steps should be taken to improve the road connectivity to Old Mangalore Port area. The road leading to Mangalore airport from the city should be made a four-lane, he said.

Many people had parted with their lands at the time of widening of the roads in the city, he said and added that they are entitled for TDR (transferable development rights). Such persons should be exempted from capital gain tax while selling their TDR. The MCC should request the Central Government to consider this issue, he said.

Vegetable markets

At least, 15 markets catering to the needs of vegetable, fish and meat customers should be set up in different parts of the city, he said.

The condition of the existing play grounds and stadium should be improved. Further, small play grounds meant for children should be set up in different parts of the city, he said.

Stressing the need to focus on tourism development, Mr Prabhu said that MCC should urge the Government to set up a full-fledged office of the Tourism Department.

Great Idea. In the west what happens is that we take all our junk to the skip/recycling centre which is a large area with metallic containers arranged one after another. There can be up tp 16 containers for different things like household waste, wood, cardboard boxes, metals, computers ,clothes ,shoes, bottle bank etc. Clothes and shoes might go for charity. You just drive and park in front of the contaier, reverse park and take all the things to their respective containers. The space behind the container is no go area where machines like a crusher keeps crushing the items when the contaner is full. A lorry/truck will take thes container to a refill. Some places in UK have about 90% recycling and others between 60-70%. This culture has been built up over the years.Every weekend they take domestic waste which we fill in black bags and every alternate weeks they take paper and milk cans/other bottles for which they have provided us with a green and blue rectangular plastic box. The other alternate weekend they take green waste which we have to put in green bag . The bags are provided by the council.
For clothes ,shoes and bottles there is no container but a metallic box where there is slot to put clothes. For bottles there is are three vertical containers made of some type of plastic with holes in them to put the bottles. separate for green, brown and clear bottles. There is a big metallic container ,like a box into which you can put news papers, magazines etc.

Sadly in this country we cannot repair anything as labour is expensive and buying new is sometimes cheaper. So lots of things are wasted . These things could have easily been repaired in India.

Here are some Exclusive pics of Mini buses which ply through Agumbe Ghat section connecting Coastal Karnataka districts of Udupi & Dakshin Kannda to Malanad districts of Chickmaglur & Shimoga in Karnataka.

These buses are built on regular Tata and AL chassis which are customized and made small.

The Agumbe ghat gets the second highest rainfall in India and the ghat section has 14 sharp hair pin curves which only these buses can manage. The road is also very narrow and steap.

During rainy season you can see the clouds below the bus...

Thanks Kadri. wonder how Volvo's would fare on this route. Are Leylands more powerful ? Some of CPC bus drivers were known to me and they always used to brag how their dodge buses were more powerful.I think they were good once you have changed all the gears. Tata's gears were easier to use.It is amazing how the size of those gears have come down. Earlier you used to have this big bent rods as gears which used to be on the left hand side of the drivers and placed slightly behind. Do you still find those. Many buses in Kerala still have these outdated gears. Mangalore buses have transformed much before and at a faster rate.
I still remember in early seventies I have travelled on this route in my father's Herald . We had to put stones behind the tyres at certain bends to prevent car from going backwards!

@ Ajay:

Had travelled in the Mangalore - Udupi Volvo, will post a detailed review during the weekend. If Volvo is able to come up with a short chassis then someone may take it. But chances are limited. Even LCV buses like Eicher Skyline, Swaraj Mazda cant climb this route.

Ashok Leylands are more powerful and a bit costlier than Tata's. Most owners prefer Tata due to less investment. They change the buses in 3 or 4 years. But Leyland can be used for 5 or 6 years easily.

And it looks like CPC is trying to make a come back. They have launched thier third set of buses. This time in Kundapura - Udupi - Bangalore route. Its a 2+2Seater.

The old gear trucks are there. But in coastal area's almost all the old buses have been replaced. Cant find the old gear Tata buses now.

More national highways likely

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: Imagine zooming along the highway at 120kmph on a signal-free stretch from Bangalore to Mangalore via Madikeri and covering the distance in less than five hours.
This dream may come true if the government plans to convert 3,812km of state highways into national ones in the next five-year plan, starting 2011. The state has placed a proposal before the Centre to convert 19 major state highways, including the 350km Bangalore-Mysore-Madikeri-Mangalore stretch.
“The Union road ministry is likely to approve it in one or two months,’’ public works department (PWD) minister C M Udasi said on Thursday.
Major state highways in Karnataka have turned into virtual death traps for commuters. With traffic congestion increasing, 2,000 lives on an average are lost on state highways every year, thanks to bad roads and poor traffic-controlling system.

Mangalore, April 29: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Friday laid the foundation stone for the proposed new circuit house building adjacent to the existing one, which was built in 1965 at Kadri Hills here.

The Public Works Department would build the three storey building with 15 well equipped rooms at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore.

The chief minister had sanctioned Rs 3 crore after examining the spot on August 2010. The decision was taken to build the new building as, according to the district-in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar, the existing circuit house doesn’t have the necessary facilities and security arrangements to accomodate VIPs and VVIPs, who during their visit to city opt to stay at private hotels.

The modern building, which would come up at an area of 1339 square meter, is expected to serve the security needs of the high ranking leaders of the country and state apart from assuring all the modern facilities including lift, fire extinguishing arrangements, lobby / car porch etc.

The building would also contain a kitchen room, dining hall and a 40 seat auditorium

The police department has decided to install cameras at strategic places in the city for the purpose.

The task of fixing over 30 closed circuit cameras in spots chosen by the police department is now in progress. Godrej Company has bagged this tender. These cameras will work without break, and can operate all the 360 degrees. The task is expected to be completed by mid-May. In all likelihood, these cameras will be functional before June 1.

City commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, has revealed that places like Hampankatta, PVS Circle, Jyoti, Mahavir Circle, Lalbagh, Lady Hill, State Bank, KSRTC bus stand, railway station, Kottara Chowki, Bunder among others, have been chosen for keeping round-the clock watch. In addition, cameras will also be focussed on other important roads in the city, and three national highways which connect the roads leading into the city.

Facilities to view the movements through these cameras have been set up at the police control room. The policemen will be able to keep tab over movements at all the places at once. The department hopes that these cameras will help the policemen to identify culprits involved with unsavoury activities and indict them without loss of time. The city, after Bangalore, will be the second city in the state to get this facility, and the police personnel believe that these cameras will improve their efficiency.

Mangalore varsity, the hub of nuclear research

The Mangalore University, known for the strides it has made in nuclear physics, is all set to get a linear nuclear accelerator at a cost of Rs10.34 crore.

A high level committee of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, has cleared the project. With the latest acquisition, the university will be equipped for research into irradiation, isotopes and many other areas of nuclear physics that have a bearing on agriculture and environment.

The university could emerge as a national centre for research in nuclear physics.

Vice-chancellor TC Shivashankara Murthy said, “The Microtron Nuclear Accelerator, which has been there in the Physics department of the Mangalore University for more than 15 years, was the only such unit outside the BARC in India. The updating of that accelerator with the linear nuclear accelerator will help the university gain entry into new areas of study, including nanotechnology, biotech, polymers and basic nuclear physics and environment.”

The vice-chancellor explained that the accelerator would aid in the study of subjects with the potential for wide application.
“Irradiation processes could help in the field of agriculture and horticulture, by extending the shelf life of agricultural produce.

Isotope studies could help in understanding changes in environment. The Microtron centre already has projects being undertaken at a cost of Rs2.8 crore. The new research facility would aid in taking up more projects, and the university is also in the process of setting up a Gamma Chamber. When the additional infrastructure is ready, this university will be one of the finest Nuclear Physics centres in India, if not in the world. The Linear Nuclear Accelerator will also be the first one in the country within a university, outside the BARC,” Prof Murthy said.

Thanks for the pictures of the gears! looks sleek.

BC Road flyover looks shoddy. I wonder how they could justifying collectiong toll for this. The company should be fined and advised to sort out the road . The authorities should never have allowed traffic before all work was completed.I was looking at the roads in other parts of the country .They are of superior quality. Why has this become like this. Lloks like they want to finish some nonsense quickly.

Bangalore: Four Passport Centres in State Including Mangalore Upgraded

Bangalore: Four Passport Centres in State Including Mangalore Upgraded

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Apr 30: The union government has upgraded all the 77 Passport Seva Kendras (service centres) opened in the country on an experimental basis during May last, to enable people to get passport-related services fast, into permanent offices. Addressing a press conference here on Friday April 29, regional transport officer, Dr K J Srinivas informed that the four passport service centres presently functioning in the state i.e., Bangalore (two centres), Hubli and Mangalore, will provide passport services on a full scale henceforth.

“There has been an 88 percent jump in the number of passport applications received during the 11 months since these centres became operational. More passport service centres are likely to be opened in the city, because of pressure of applications. We expect to secure permission for the same in the next phase,” he stated.

Srinivas said that the department has been making all out efforts for the fast disposal of applications, in spite of problems like staff shortage encountered by the department. He said that the department has introduced measures like added working hours and working on Saturdays, for serving the needy, revealing that 32,000 passport applications had been disposed off after these centres were opened in the state. He noted that lot of time gets wasted at the stage of scrutiny of applications, particularly in the police department, as the police personnel are forced to attend to the additional duty of verifying the addresses of passport applicants.

He added that the process of accepting applications through private agencies has been stopped, as it is observed that fake documents were enclosed to several applications received through Bangalore One centres and private agencies. He said that henceforth, people want to get passport, need to apply through the internet.

MANGALORE: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa here on Friday agreed to allow Mangalore City Corporation to invite bids at one go for all works to be taken up under the second instalment of Rs. 100 crore special grant, according K.N. Vijayaprakash, Commissioner of the corporation.

He told the monthly meeting of the corporation council on Friday that the Government Order approving the action plan of works on February 23 mentioned that the civic body would have to take up all works in three years from 2011-12 to 2013-14. In the first financial year, the civic body should invite bids to take up works to the tune of Rs. 30 crore to Rs. 35 crore.

The Commissioner said that when this issue was brought to the notice of Mr. Yeddyurappa when he was here, he directed a senior official concerned in Bangalore to lift the condition. Hence the civic body could invite bids for all works at once and implement the works immediately after selecting bidders. Once the revised order was received from the government, the civic body need not wait to implement works phase by phase in three years.

April 30: It’s a mad race out there for getting that coveted passport. And it’s not just urban folk but citizens from tier-2 cities too who are flocking to passport offices. Sample this: Mangalore gets 375 applications per day while Hubli and Gulbarga together get around 300 applications a day.

"We do not know the exact reasons. It could be because those from tier-2 cities now have more work opportunities abroad. Naturally, the requirement for skilled labour abroad, especially in the Middle East, will go up,’’ regional passport officer N S Srinivasa said.

Thus, the passport applications intake in these offices will now go up to meet the demand. Soon, passport application offices in Mangalore will receive 25 more applications every day, while the increase in the number will be decided for Hubli and Gulbarga too, Srinivasa said.

The scene in Bangalore is similar. The passport seva kendras on Lalbagh Road and Marathalli Ring Road receive 1,600 applications every day which has left authorities flummoxed. "I don’t know why there has been such high demand for a passport among Bangaloreans in the past one year. We have decided to increase the intake to 1,800 applications. The Lalbagh office which takes 900 applications a day will take 150 more now. Marathahalli which gets about 700 applications every day will receive 50 more," Srinivasa said.

No More Speed Post Applications
As part of acclimatizing to the new passport processing system, the receiving of passport applications through speed post has been suspended. The passport office earlier stopped the filing of application through BangaloreOne centres. This has been initiated to regularize the new processing system.

"Earlier, as per the National Informatics Commission procedure, we had to scan each application received and then fill the data manually. In case of speed post applications, if there are any documents missing or any other errors we will have to send the application back and ask the applicant to furnish it again. In the new system, the applicant has to be physically present, which eliminates these errors as the information is filed in front of the applicants," Srinivasa said.

According to him, scrapping of the speed post application would provide the passport seva kendras with the much-needed manpower.

A Problem for those in rural Areas?
Dismissing complaints that suspending speed post facility would cause great inconvenience to those applying for passport from rural areas, Srinivasa said it will not create a problem for them. "Everyone need not come to Bangalore to file the application. There are centres in five districts and people could approach the nearest one.’’

Figure It Out

Mangalore: 375 applications per day

Hubli, Gulbarga: 300 per day

Bangalore: 1,600 per day.

* It will cover nine beaches, 23 villages

MANGALORE: The district administration is all set to launch the drive to clean up 43 km of coastline on May 1. More than 5,000 people are expected to take part in the campaign.

Called “Save Our Beach”, the drive will cover five zones: Talapady to the Netravati river, Bengre to NMPT South, Panambur to Hosabettu, Hosabettu to Sasihithlu, and Chitrapura to Hejmady, according to a release issued by the event management company hired by the district administration. Each of these zones is headed by a district-level officer. The Mangalore coast covers 23 villages and nine beaches, the release said.

It quoted Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav as saying: “We want to create a civic sense and want to make this a people's place.

We want to ensure public participation in each and every programme organised by us. We want to ensure the people of Dakshina Kannada a feeling of oneness and belongingness with the administration”.

It quoted Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner K.N. Vijay Prakash as saying: “(It) is not a day's event; it is a movement, a people participative movement to clean the land in which we have been living for so many years.

To see the beach clean and crystal clear is a joy forever. Hence it is each and everyone's responsibility to work towards this cause.” Urging people to take part in greater numbers, the release said:

Mangalore: New gaming destination for children (http://www.mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=local&newsid=235520)

Children in Mangalore now have a new place to go for entertainment with the introduction of a new “gaming destination” in the city on Thursday.

Called “Fun City”, a family entertainment centre (FEC), was launched at City Centre mall.

As soon as it was inaugurated, shoppers with children visited the gaming park. The toddlers took to the rides such as the dummy cars, pretending to be driving. Older children took to other games such as “bumper cars”.

The enclosure filled with balls and another which had a rubber floor attracted children of all age groups. A small boy was thrilled to drive a car, seated next to a dummy tiger cub. The “tattoo” corner attracted women who said that this was a new place, people, especially those with children at home, would want to visit it now, in the summer holidays. Nandakumar Rao, Head Marketing, Citymax, said they had decided to open the FEC in Mangalore as “it is a cosmopolitan city, with a presence of corporate houses and well-travelled people who would have visited such gaming destinations abroad and in other cities and are looking for similar outlets at home as well”.

Citymax India is part of the Dubai-based retailer Landmark Group, which has the “Lifestyle” stores in India. This was the second outlet of Fun City in Karnataka and the 14th in India. It has 29 centres in West Asia.

The FEC, covering 8,200 sq. ft., has 50 amusement games, rides, family rides, soft play zones. While one game is priced at Rs. 20, most of the games such as video games, car and motorcycle racing, dance machine, hammer game, basket ball, and football cost Rs. 30.

The “Bumper car” cost Rs. 50 while “deal no deal” is Rs. 50, said the company's representatives. Ashish Gupta, Head - Funcity India, Landmark Group, told The Hindu that they chose City Centre as it recorded a footfall of 15,000 a day and expect 8 to 10 per of that number at the FEC. Visits to the FEC would be a must for the people heading to the cinema and food courts, when they want to relax and unwind after the shopping. It was therefore located on the floor with proximity to these places. “It is aimed at the people of Mangalore, Udupi, Surathkal and Manipal,” he said.

Two Fun City FECs would be launched in Nagpur and Coimbatore in June first week and second week respectively, Mr. Gupta added.

Marine life:An Aquarium maintained on the premises of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panhcayat office in Mangalore.

MANGALORE: Industry persons in Mangalore say setting up an aquarium in the city is one of the many ways of attracting tourists to the city. “An aquarium in Dakshina Kannada district will be a hit. It can be a good attraction in this region,” said Yathish Baikampady, Chief Executive Officer, Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project. People watch aquatic life on television but they did not see it in reality in an aquarium. Visiting an aquarium could be a good learning experience for schoolchildren, he said.

Mr. Baikampady and Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) president G.G. Mohandas Prabhu referred to plans made by N. Yogish Bhat, MLA and Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, of developing a marine park in the city. “He had been working hard to realise the dream. But I do not know how far that plan has taken shape,” said Mr. Prabhu.

Mr. Yogish Bhat said the process for developing the marine-aqua park was at a “ preliminary stage”. The bidding process was yet to begin but the project study was over, he said.

Mr. Baikampady said there was good potential for trained-dolphin shows in Dakshina Kannada. It would require infrastructure, including a pool, where the dolphins feel at home, a pavilion for the spectators, and trained personnel to teach the dolphins. Such a venture would require investment of up to Rs. 10 crore. When S.M. Krishna was Chief Minister of the State, the Coastal Agenda Taskforce, headed by Vinay Hegde (now, Chancellor of Nitte University) began work on how to boost tourism in the region. “Unfortunately, by the time the report was ready, the government changed. Subsequent State governments did not take interest in the matter,” Mr. Prabhu said.

Meanwhile, the plan to get a golf course in Mangalore was at an “advanced level”, said Mr. Yogish Bhat. The plan for the golf course and the marine-aqua park were “parallel projects”. For the golf course, the bidding process was over. But the final word was yet to be given. “We cannot share the name as of now,” said Mr. Bhat.

The technical and financial feasibility studies had still to be carried out. We would share details as soon as we know who the award was being given to, Mr. Bhat told The Hindu. The zilla panchayat office, close to Infosys, does have an aquarium with about five boxes.

Mangalore: “It's beautiful, but very difficult to capture on the camera.” This was how Tomton Coelho of the city describes the joy of sighting a dolphin on the high seas. “It is difficult to take out the camera and capture the sight,” he says.

Mr. Coelho is among many residents of Mangalore who have enjoyed sighting dolphins in the high seas. “It is always a pleasure to watch dolphins somersault and perform other antics. It is something that touches your heart,” he says. Mr. Coelho has watched the acrobatics of dolphins in Malaysia. He has sighted dolphins while on a cruise between Mumbai and Lakshadweep and between Karwar and Kozhikode.

Similar has been the experience of Eulalia D'Souza, a tour operator. “I and my family members enjoyed the one-hour drive in a speed boat in Goa.

It is just for a few seconds that you can see dolphins (on the high seas),” she says. “I am yet to try out the facility available on Panambur beach,” she adds.

Yathish Baikampady, chief executive officer of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project, says dolphin-sighting boat ride provides an opportunity for naturalists to sight these intelligent creatures from a close range. “There are many dolphins all along the western coast,” he says. The short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus Capensis), which has a white underside and the spinner dolphin (Stenella Longirostris), which is grey in colour, are found in the Arabian Sea, he says.

“We charge Rs. 3,000 for a boat ride for 15 members. We refund 50 per cent amount if there is no sighting. But there have been only two occasions when I had to refund the amount,” Mr. Baikampady says.

Dolphin pools

Additional Director-General of Police K.S.N. Chikkerur, an avid naturalist, says dolphin pools similar to those existing in Eastern and Western countries can be created in Mangalore. “These pools attract a lot of tourists,” he says.

Mr. Chikkerur says care should be taken to select the species that are friendly with human beings. “There are a few species that are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act,” he says.

Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav says it is premature to think about dolphin pools in Mangalore. “It is too early to think about such an initiative. It can be considered seeing the response of people to the boat rides,” Mr. Yadav told The Hindu.

Mr. Yadav says right now there is no proposal before the district administration for starting a dolphin pool.

:) Good potential is being explored to the best of our generation.

Cruising along:Visitors to the Panambur beach watch a person try his hand at Jet Ski

MANGALORE: Developing water sports on beaches will be made an integral part of beach tourism in Mangalore, Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav told The Hindu.

Mr. Yadav aid the district administration had long-term plans of handing over two beaches in the district to private players for development and maintenance. However, developing water sports facilities was one of the conditions that applicants must fulfil to be awarded the contract for developing the beach for tourism.

“Before setting up water sports on the beach, it is necessary to develop a beach for tourism, which is a long-term process. Panambur is already being developed, Someshwar, and Thannirbhavi beaches will also be developed similarly, but water sports will be a component of that,” he said.

Mr. Yadav said tenders had been called for the project for Someshwar and Thannirbhavi beaches, and the process was likely to be completed by the end of this month.

To a question related to safety of venturing into the sea, Mr. Yadav said: “What is available in Goa cannot be copied here.” The district administration would allow only facilities that were suitable for the coast, he said.

The focus would be on beaches rather than inland water bodies as the district was well known for its beaches, he said.

Entrepreneurs had not come forward to set up water sports facilities for inland water bodies, Mr. Yadav said.

At present, water sports were being offered by Sultan Battery Water Sports and Adventure Centre at Sultan Battery. Those with an adventurous streak can ride a banana boat (a circular raft-like apparatus with seats, which is towed by a speed boat) or go kayaking.

Those with more sedate tastes, can hire a pedal or cruise boat for an evening on the Gurupur river. Prices range between Rs. 50 and Rs. 150. A fisherman who now works for the establishment that runs the enterprise, said water sports offered by the establishment were popular among students, both outsiders and local.

Asked whether Mangalore could have water sports similar to those in Goa, he said that it was not advisable because the waves were too high here.

With plans like these, the coast of Karnataka is catching up with its neighbours like Kerala and Karnataka. :applause:

MANGALORE: Many followers of Mata Amritanandamayi cleaned the central market area on Tuesday morning. Foreigners were among the volunteers.

They picked up the discarded footwear, plastics, vegetable and green waste, and other trash from the area surrounding the Central Market complex.

Elizabeth, a volunteer from Luxembourg, told The Hindu that in most countries the market places were usually not clean. She found Mangalore to be a clean city. Moana, another volunteer from Switzerland, said that volunteers cleaned the area on instructions by “Amma”.

Ms. Moana was visiting Karnataka for the first time. “It is a more advanced State compared to others. Mangalore city is clean,” She said.

A.R.G. Menon, a professor of English at Amrita School of Engineering, Amritapuri, Kollam, said that “amma” gave darshan to devotees till 3 a.m. Tuesday. Immediately, she instructed devotees to select a place for cleaning.

He said that it was natural to expect accumulation of trash near markets. “Compared to markets in other places, I find it lean here. We are cleaning the area as a service under Amala Bharatam project of the math. The project is on keeping surroundings clean,” he said.

Mr. Menon said there were volunteers from England, the U.S., and Russia.

The former Deputy Mayor Rajendra, who visited the spot, said: “It is an unfortunate situation of foreigners cleaning the city.”

Sanath Hegde, a doctor, said the cleanliness was on creating an awareness among people to keep the city clean.

Among the volunteers some were seen wearing gloves and a few had their masks on.

Many were found lifting waste with bare hands. Some volunteers were seen offering banana to their counterparts. Some officials of the Mangalore City Corporation had been supervising the cleanliness on the spot.

The cleanliness drive comes close on the heals of the “Save our beach” campaign launched by the district administration here on Sunday.

A few days ago people had participated in a “shramdan” campaign launched by the district administration.

Mangalore: Post-Gokhale Report, Additional Safety Measures at Airport (http://www.mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=broadcast&broadcastid=236428)

The court of inquiry led by Air Marshal B N Gokhale on the Air India Express plane-crash here on May 22, 2010, had recently submitted its final report to the union government.

In the horrifying crash, 158 passengers from Dubai had perished while the aircraft was trying to land. Eight others had survived in the mishap. The plane had overshot the runway 24 and crashed into a deep gorge in Kenjar near the airport. The COI has apparently made a special note of the runway-end had recommended special safety measures.

Now the government and the DGCA have decided in right earnest to implement certain measures recommended by the COI. Work has commenced on the runway-end safety area at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore as part of phase I.

Keeping in mind the need for additional safety for the aircraft landing, a 237-metre cliff area is being filled to bring it to the level of the runway. Sand arrester facility to prevent planes from moving off the runway is being provided.

'Distance Go' markers, which would facilitate safer landing are being fitted on the runways designated as 06/24 and 09/27 at a cost of Rs 10.5 lakh. This facility helps the pilots to exactly gauge the runway length upon landing and be guided by the data received.

Work has begun at the end of April and is likely to be completed in about five months.

Mangalore, May 5: Thanks to the joint effort of district administration and Mangalore City Corporation and the citizens, Dakshina Kannada district, which has its headquarters in this coastal city, has emerged as the most hygienic district among the 593 districts of the country.

According to a new sanitation survey conducted by World Bank two other districts of Karnataka state made it among the top 50 districts of India. Udupi, which was a part of undivided Dakshina Kannada and Shimoga, bagged 11th and 13th rank respectively.

However, the survey has revealed that most districts in Karnataka have miserable sanitation. “Karnataka as a whole has failed the sanitation test despite the Rs 100 crore sanctioned for each of the eight city corporations for their sanitation programmes,” says the survey.

It says that despite the implementation of sanitation programmes at regular intervals, many of the districts of north-Karnataka are not hygienic.

The World Bank survey took into consideration the construction of toilets, utilisation of funds and Nirmal Gram Puraskar prize money, work done by local bodies and people’s participation among other issues, when making its assessment.

Mangalore, which emerged first in the country, does not have toilets for 17746 houses but impressed the World Bank in all other departments.

Kolhapur district made it to the second spot followed by Ernakulam, Kozikode, Malpuram and Trissur in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth spots respectively.

SURPRISE CHECK:The Coastal Security Police speed boat intercepts a boat for a surprise check as part of the ‘Sagar Kavach' drill in Mangalore on Wednesday.

The Hindu
MANGALORE: The police and the Coast Guard began on Wednesday a two-day drill, “Sagar Kavach”, on monitoring the movement of ships and suspicious people all along the coast between Mangalore and Karwar.

“We do this exercise twice in a year. This is just to check the preparedness of all agencies involved in the protection of coastline,” said Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) Alok Mohan.

The Coastal Security Police personnel from the five stations along the coast and police personnel from Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi districts are involved in the operation. Fishermen belonging to the Sagar Rakshak Dal took part.

In Mangalore, the police had placed barricades at several points along the highway and checked vehicles for documents. “We have been directed to do so by our officers,” said a police constable posted at the Pumpwell Circle. A vigil was kept on people coming to Panambur beach. The police noted down the registration numbers of vehicles coming to Panambur beach. An armed Coastal Security Police personnel was seen observing movements of people on the beach.

The three speed boats of the Coastal Security Police were making rounds in the sea and checking the ships. While one boat was patrolling near the Old Bunder area, the other was moving between Tannirbhavi and Hejamadi Kodi.

The third boat was deployed between the Karwar and Bhatkal coast. “We will continue to check ships till Thursday evening,” said a Coastal Security Police officer. “We have been asked to be on alert,” said another police officer.

Commander of Coast Guard, Karnataka, Commandant P.S. Jha said the Coast Guards were actively involved with the police in conducting the exercise.

Mangalore, May 6: In a month and a half, Mangalore will get a 1,200-seat five-screen three-dimensional (3D) cinema multiplex, including 60-seat auditorium with “luxury” seating. Called “VIP”, the seats will have 180-degree reclining ability and in-seat catering from the in-house food and beverage (F and B) section of cine operators, said Ashish Shukla, Head — Exhibition, Cinepolis India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cinépolis, Mexico-based international cine “exhibitor”.

Cinepolis has invested Rs. 10 crore for the five screens (Rs. 2 crore per screen), which will be on the fourth floor of the City Centre Mall, Mangalore.

The screen, seating arrangements, and technology to show the movie was the exhibitor's, which had taken the property on a renewable “lease model” from Mohtisham, he said.

How many people in Mangalore would watch movies from such seats?

“We think we will get them although mornings on weekdays are a bit of a concern for us. “Even if there are two people, we will screen the movie,” he said.

Sixty per cent of the collections originate on weekends and 40 per cent from four weekdays (Mondays to Thursdays), said Mr. Shukla.

Mangalore was chosen based on its student population, multilingual crowd with a propensity to watch movies. It will show Tulu, English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam movies. Ticketing will be online, through SMS and email. Pricing has not been decided as yet but “is not substantially different from multiplexes,” he said.

The company has set up a Facebook page about the multiplex in the city, where it expects 10,000 people to visit the multiplex each week.

A seven-screen multiplex was started in Bangalore two weeks ago but the “VIP” auditorium could not be introduced there as the “shell” had been made.

In Mangalore, it was financially feasible, he said. The company has 200 such “VIP” screens in the world.

The seven-screen multiplex in at the RM Mall in Bangalore has taken off in two weeks with 80 per cent occupancy on the last weekend for 13 movies. About 32,000 people have visited it in the last 12 days.

“The initial fervour will reduce but we expect them to return because of the experience,” he said. South India was an “extremely crucial market” for the company because of the multilingual market.

In Karnataka, it was looking at other cities to set up multiplexes, Mr. Shukla added.

EVen though it mention that Fort was draw by British in 18th century. I really doubt. because this is Huge Fort looks like. within two century it can not vanish right. At least some trace should be there. Even Humpi was destroyed totally in 16th century still you can see the remains. But in Mangalore we son't see any thing. I think below given para from same Wikipedia might be right one.

"In 1640, the Keladi Nayaka kingdom defeated the Portuguese and ruled the town until 1762. The Portuguese were allowed to have trade relations with Mangalore.[24] In 1695, the town was torched by Arabs in retaliation to Portuguese restrictions on Arab trade.[37]"

One more possiblity is that this might be Bekal fort. Because that was under Tippus control.

Any suggestions??

Visnaya,

I have a different opinion.

It need not be necessary that all the old structures must remain on the surface of the earth forever. In most of the cases whenever flood, earthquake or any other natural calamities occur such old buildings could go into the womb of the earth.

I have also heard in the past through history of Mangalore that it had a Fort. In any case I am not sure whether it is the same or not. If you may know, even Mumbai also had a Fort. However now, only name remains but no Fort.

RELIGIOUS DEDICATION:Artisans working at the Venkataramana Temple on Car Street in Mangalore.

MANGALORE: The formal process of renovation of the ancient Lord Venkataramana Temple on Car Street will begin on Friday. Sudheendra Tirtha Swamiji of Kashi Math will take part in the ceremony “Nidhi Kalasha Shilanyasa”, the first step towards re-consecrating Lord Venkataramana in the temple.

As part of the rituals, a kalash (a pot with a coconut above it) filled with gold, silver and “Navaratnas” will be placed to start the construction work on Friday.

The Kashi Math seer will perform two other ceremonies related to renovation of the temple on January 24, 2012.

The Lord Venkataramana Temple is one of the prominent pilgrim centres in Mangalore and it has a large number of followers from the Gowda Saraswat Brahmin community. Lord Veera Venkatesha, the main deity of the temple, was installed at the temple in 1804 by the then seer of Kashi Math Vibhudendra Thirtha Swamiji.

The other deities consecrated on the temple premises later were Lord Ganesha, Garuda, Ganapati and Saraswati.

The math decided to take up renovation of the temple as the old structure had been becoming weak and the wooden frames were being eaten by termites.

“The new sanctum santorum will be taller than the old structure. It will be built using black stone,” said Manju Neereshwallya, spokesperson of the Sri Venkataramana Temple Jeernoddhara Committee, which is overseeing the renovation work.

On Friday, the ceremony will start at 7 a.m. with devotees taking the photograph of Vibhudendra Thirtha Swamiji in a silver palanquin in a procession from the temple. With singing of bhajans, the procession will go through the Mahamaya Temple Road, Field Street, Dongerkeri, Chitra Talkies road, Lower Car Street and return to the temple.

About 25 bhajan groups will be taking part in the procession.

 This is probably one of the oldest temples of Mangalore.

MANGALORE: The authorities have decided to initiate measures to reduce the number of accidents involving oil tankers on the Shiradi Ghat section of national highway 48.

A team of officials will identify ways to improve safety at the accident-prone spots on the Uppinangady-Shirady stretch of the highway, organise eye check-up camps, and ensure two drivers in each vehicle in a bid to reduce the number of accidents.

At a meeting presided over by Superintendent of Police Labhu Ram and attended by the Regional Transport Officer, Puttur, and representatives of oil companies here on Wednesday, measures to bring down the number of accidents involving tankers of oil companies were discussed in detail.

Mr. Ram said that a team comprising the police, RTO, representatives of the National Highways Authorities of India (NHAI) and the Safety Officer of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (who is in-charge of safety for all oil companies in Mangalore) would visit the stretch in the next few days.

The team would visit the accident-prone spots on that particular stretch of the highway and decide on the ways to prevent accidents. For instance, the team would decide whether constructing road shoulders or medians, or placing signboards at certain spots would help tanker drivers. The NHAI authorities would determine whether there was any fault in the design of the road, Mr. Ram said.

Officials of HPCL said that they would organise eye check-up camps for tanker drivers twice a year to check for night-blindness and colour blindness along with eyesight. A short video clipping would also be prepared by the companies to raise awareness about the dangers of the road and what drivers could do avoid accidents, Mr. Ram said. Mr. Ram said that the companies had agreed to ensure that each tanker had two drivers as per the Motor Vehicles Act.

I guess it should be Rani Abakka's fort in Someshwara.

This is not yet someshwar. this was at old port( bunder). I have one more photo of this with back ground hills as well ( might be bavutagudda). I will post sometime later. This drawing were made by portughees.

I know one incident recorded in History that Arbas burned mangalore due to then mangalore ruler affilated to Portughees for business. But not sure this port got distroyed due that incident

Hi all,

Please refer to the link below for history of Mangalore Fort. This picture was made when the Fort was under Tippu Sulthan's control.

Wikipedia - Mangalore's History. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mangalore#History)

Regards,
Ananda:cheers:

It could be Saint Sebastian Fort built by Portugese. It was located where now District Commisioner's Office is located.

Old Fort was in Bolara area. It was built by Keladi rulers. The names like Halekote Mariamma Mahishasuramardhini Devasthana, Halekote Mukhyaprana Devasthana are still there. It was a normal practice among hindu rulers to have Mariamma or Durga, Mukhyaprana and Ganapathi temples at fort gates. (You can observe this in all fort gates of Bengaluru old fort like Kengeri Gate, Yelahanka Gate, etc.) I think once the new Mangaluru fort was built by Portugese the old fort relics at Bolara got the name Halekote.

Alupa kings might have built forts in various locations like Kadri/Kadire, Alape/Alupe, etc. We know Pandya Caves (popularly known as paandavara guhegaLu) was built by them as escape routes from Kadri fort. And I think even Halekote fort was initially built by Alupas and later Keladi rulers renovated it. "Kote Ganapathi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attavar)" in Umamaheshwari temple of Attavara means that there was a fort in Attavara also. And I also think Mangaluru or Mangalapura got its name from the old fort as Mangala means fort.

Ullala Queen Abbakka's fort was Kotepura. A part of this fort area is submerged under Nethravathi river now.

I think only heritage remnants of Alupa kings (Shri Pandya Dhanajaya kings) we have now are paandava's caves, paadava's stones (http://tulu-research.blogspot.com/2008/01/68-pandavarakallua-burial-structure.html) (of Munda age, does it have relation with Pandyas?) and a few temples but renovated.

* Rs. 98.5 lakh allocated for building jogger's track at Gujjarekere

BETTER DAYS AHEAD:Gujjarekere at Jeppu in Mangalore.

MANGALORE: By next summer, you may take your morning or evening walk on the joggers' track around the Gujjarakere in Jeppu or Jeppupatna Kere in Jeppinamogaru if the plans of the Mangalore City Corporation materialise.

The corporation has taken steps to develop nine tanks at a cost of Rs. 4.25 crore with a special thrust on three of them. The tanks getting special attention are Gujjarakere (at a cost of Rs. 98.5 lakh), Jeppupatna Kere (Rs. 1.25 crore), and Bairadikere (Rs. 86 lakh) at Alape village. The improvement of these tanks was taken up under funds given to the MLAs — Rs. 5 lakh each — for modernisation and protection of tanks, according to G.V. Rajasekhar, Chief Engineer of the corporation.

He agreed that the Gujjarakere had been facing a major problem as sewage was let into it. A separate tender had been called for diversion of sewage. The work was taken up at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 30 lakh.

He said the corporation would discuss how the remaining funds sanctioned for the two legislators representing Mangalore for rejuvenation of tanks could be used. Providing proper lighting to the tank such as Gujjarakere to beautify it was under study, he said.

Residents were apprehensive that funds sanctioned for the retaining wall would go down the drain if the plan was not implemented properly.

The corporation had invited tenders for six tanks in Mangalore South (of N. Yogish Bhat and three in Mangalore North (of district in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar).

The six tanks in Mr. Bhat's constituency were proposed to be improved at a cost of Rs. 3.8 crore and three in Mr. Palemar's constituency at a cost of Rs. 45 lakh.

The tanks taken up in Mr. Bhat's constituency other than the three mentioned above are: Karbisthan Kere (Rs. 25 lakh) and Palemaru Kere (Rs. 20 lakh) in Jeppinamogaru and Emmekere (Rs. 25 lakh) in Thota village.

The tanks in Mr. Palemar's constituency are Thekkabettu Kere; the tank near the Sadashiva Temple; and the tank by the side of Nagana in Kanakatla Ashrama Colony Nagabana – all in Surathkal village. The first two will get Rs. 10 lakh each while the third Rs. 25 lakh.

Mr. Rajasekhar said while the project provided for removing silt from all the tanks, the Gajjarakere and Jeppupatnakere would be provided with masonry work with steps, compound to prevent encroachment and a jogging track with inter-locking tiles.

MANGALORE: At a time when Bangalore City Police (BCP) is moving towards a full fledged traffic management centre (TMC) within 18 months, their counterparts in Mangalore have taken first step in this direction by installing surveillance cameras at vantage points across the city. Mangalore City Police (MCP) has divided the city into two tiers – central business district areas and entrance points to the cities where these eyes have been installed.

Praveen Sood, additional commissioner of police (traffic) told STOI that Mangalore City Police will soon be able to realise the benefit of having surveillance cameras. "In Bangalore, response of motorists to surveillance and enforcement cameras is very positive," he said. It is human nature to behave when they know that they are being watched, Praveen said, adding this has contributed to a 50% improvement in behaviour of motorists in the capital.

Acknowledging this fact, MCP chief Seemanth Kumar Singh, who earlier served a stint as DCP (Traffic) in Bangalore, said Godrej Security Solutions has installed the cameras for MCP. "This wireless based system will enable us to get a real time sense of traffic movement and traffic related congestion in the city once the system is operational," he said, adding the feed from the surveillance cameras could also be used from crime point of view.

He also said that plans are afoot to ask private agencies with their network of surveillance cameras at public places such as malls to share their feed with MCP which will be monitored at city control room. "We will station quick reaction teams at the disposal of the control room so that they could be rushed to trouble spot in shortest possible time," he said, adding MCP would share camera feed with Mangalore City Corporation during natural disasters.

The TMC of BCP receives live video coverage from 160 major junctions using surveillance cameras and traffic signal violations from five enforcement cameras, Praveen said adding in near future most traffic signals in Bangalore will be vehicle actuated. This is precursor to full fledged TMC, which is under construction at a cost of Rs 13 crore. "You need to walk before you can run," he said when asked when such a facility could come up in Mangalore.TOI (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mangalore/Mangalore-police-to-install-surveillance-cameras-in-city/articleshow/8187705.cms)

* He had promised to start city service when he visited Vittal in 2008

MANGALORE: Transport Minister R. Ashok on Saturday was non-committal about starting KSRTC city bus service in Mangalore. Mr. Ashok had promised to start KSRTC city service when he came to inaugurate the Vittal bus-stand in December 2008.

He was replying to questions from reporters at Vittal where he inaugurated a new police station on Saturday. When reporters asked him about the delay on the part of KSRTC in starting city service, Mr. Ashok said: “We need the support of the people to start it.”

When pointed out that Mangaloreans have been demanding it for a long time, Mr. Ashok said: “We can have a discussion on it some other time.”

He said that he was discussing with officials about the possibility of having KSRTC bus service between the city and villages that were about five km away.

To a question, Mr. Ashok said: “We can run buses as and when our permits are approved by the Regional Transport Authority.” At the function to lay the foundation stone for a bus-stand in Puttur, Mr. Ashok said private bus operators should not perceive him as an opponent of privatisation of transport. “Allowing KSRTC to operate will lead to a healthy competition. It will also improve quality in the service and also increase bus frequency,” he said. The Minister said commuters should be given the option of choosing the service they wanted.

Mr. Ashok said he had asked the Deputy Commissioners to permit more buses to operate. “My whole intention is to serve people in a better way.” Mr. Ashok said he was trying to pass on to the commuters the benefits of the latest technological advancements in the field of transport.

Mr. Ashok said the KSRTC was constructing bus stands that would meet its requirements for the next 40 years. The KSRTC was going for commercial utilisation of the space available in the new bus stands and generate revenue. In the new bus stand being built at a cost of Rs. 7.32 crore in Puttur, the KSRTC would devote about 37,000 sq ft of the built up space for commercial purpose.

Mr. Ashok said work was on to build a bus stand in Udupi at a cost of Rs. 50 crore. Similarly, bus stands were coming up on B.C. Road, at Uppinangady, Gundya, Dharmastala and Subramanya.

The construction of a depot at Sullia had been delayed because of the stay granted by the Karnataka High Court. Tenders had been called for construction of a rest house in Mangalore.

UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE:A view of Shrimanti Bai Museum.

MANGALORE: Mangalore's only museum is located in a “ship-shaped” building located on a hill in Bejai, with a view of the city, the sea, and coconut trees, that is now fragmented by high-rise buildings.

Colonel V.R. Mirajkar, who settled in the city, donated the house as well as a large number of articles from his private collection, with the result that the Shrimanti Bai Memorial Government Museum houses the colonel's valuable knick-knacks along with historical artefacts from the region.

Museum curator Shejeswara R. said the house was donated to the Department of Archaeology in 1955 and museum was opened five years later. The house is asymmetrical and appears to have a deck on one side, giving it the appearance of a ship.

Articles at the museum include modern artefacts, which are less than 100 years old as opposed to antiques which are more than a century old. Apart from the standard fare of antiques, the museum has a gallery of paintings, and a collection of books, which however, is not open for public viewing.

Placed in a large hall on the ground floor, the paintings span a wide range of subjects, from depictions of famous public places to creative art works that could easily captivate the curiosity of visitors. Visitors can see dozens of idols, around six inches in height collected from several places across the Dakshina Kannada district.

Some articles, such as a carved wooden window panel, have been sourced from the Shankaranarayana Temple in Kundapura, Udupi district. The beautifully carved panel is over 100 years old. Life-sized wooden figures of men and women dating back to the 16th century were found in Makkekattu in Dakshina Kannada district. The arms of the figures of the women appear to be attached in such a way that they can be rotated. Both women have their hair depicted on one side of the head. The display board describes the figures as “Bhootagana”.

Stone sculptures from the 16th century of a “Royal Lady” were found from Naravi. Both sculptures are finely detailed in the Nayaka style. One of them depicts a woman with a child. Several idols of Jain Theerthankaras have been displayed but only two of them have boards stating the location that they were found in (Mangalore and Karkala). Several palm manuscripts, including three in Tulu, are preserved in the museum. The structure and location of the building in addition to the assorted nature of articles kept in the museum bring charm to visit the hill in Bejai.

* MCC likely to reject the proposals of bidders owing to a lapse
* The scheme was approved on July 14, 2010
* It will take at least three more months to implement the scheme: Vijayaprakash

Garbage dumped on roadside near Urwa Chilimbi in Mangalore on Monday.

MANGALORE: The three-package solid waste management scheme of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) is unlikely to become a reality soon.

After the State government approved the scheme on July 14, 2010, the civic body invited bids to implement it this January. It had shortlisted three bidders. Now, the corporation is likely to reject the proposals of the bidders because of a lapse on their part, sources in the corporation told The Hindu.

Since its formation, the scheme has seen many ups and downs. In mid-January 2010, the corporation invited bids for the scheme after obtaining the approval of the State Cabinet. A few days later, the government asked the corporation to revise the scheme citing some lapses. The changes were approved by the government in July last.

The sources said that an evaluation committee set up by the corporation to study the three proposals found that the bidders did not meet the conditions mentioned for handling vehicles.

The scheme proposed compulsory installation of global positioning system in the vehicles transporting solid waste from wards to the dumping yard at Pachchanady.

This had not been met. Hence, the corporation had no option but to invite fresh bids, the sources said.

Corporation Commissioner K.N. Vijayaprakash went on record in the MCC Council meeting on Friday last that the scheme was being implemented for the first time in the State.

The civic body was taking due care to implement it. It would take at least three more months to implement the scheme, he had said.

Features

Other features of the scheme are elimination of multiple handling of solid waste in the 60 wards; elimination of user fee for collection of solid waste from their doorstep and compulsory cleaning of the beaches.

Under the scheme, the 60 wards will be divided into north and south zones for managing solid waste, with the former having 29 wards in a package, and the latter 31.

The successful bidders would have to take up door-to-door collection of waste. In addition, they would have to take up sweeping of streets, removing weeds, cleaning road dividers, and transport waste to the compost plant and dumping yard, the sources said.

The third package would cover operation and maintenance of the compost plant and the sanitary landfill site at Panchchanady. The term of contractors under the existing eight-package scheme would end in June, the sources said.

Cess

The corporation has begun collecting solid waste management cess while accepting property tax for 2011-12 even as the implementation of the scheme is pending. As the cess collection is to be discontinued if it is implemented in this financial year, the corporation wants to adjust the cess amount collected while collecting property tax for 2012-13.

Harmless interpretation :::- :)

Hoige Bazar.. it could be selling sand or rather granite, tiles, etc as it was the hub of those activities when the tile industries were thriving in the region. Or just market on top of sand :)

Attavar - From the wiki link you mentioned...could probably originated from MundATTAYA...no guesses on the vara though (other than "blessings")

Is there a cantonment road in mangalore? cantonment is sort of military base, and mangalore did not have one after it was under british rule.

^^ Cantonment Road is identified for concretization as per the list published in The Hindu. The list is there in Mangalore thread. In Pandeshwara New Road there is a Cantonment Ward.

Mundattaya could be right. I was also thinking on that line. Arasu & Mundattaya both could have been kings? One in Attavara and another in Udyavara. Check -vara or -aavara ending of both.

there should be system where these camera will take pictures of the vehicle which violate the rules and send a post to the owner's address with the fine slip.

Here in the UK,there are Speed cameras postioned along roads. THey are colored yellow. The problem is that many people speed but slow down near the camers! Invisible cameras are better. Here the new govt and councils have dismantled many of the cameras (opposition by people ,?financial)

If you overspeed then within days you will get a slip and 3 points on your licence. The fine is about £60 pounds. There was a proposal to change the fines according to your speed.Greater the speed ,more the fines and points. That has not come ,may not come as we have a conservative govt who do not believe in speed cameras. If you get 12 points then the licence is cancelled. If you have had 3 points for 4 years then automatically at the end of 4 years you can apply to have it removed .The system is not perfect . Sometimes very good drivers get caught due to some lapse which has occured while driving(lapse of conc) but potential speeders like wHITE VAN DRIVERS (IN THE UK) overspeed but brake at the cameas. Can you believe Mangalore has piece of Africa? It is beautiful, unexplored by tourists and lonely. Yes it is Gatti Kudru about 5 kilometers from Padil-NH 48 intersection.

You have to arrive there by boat after crossing a short walk on the fields crossing villages and picturesque countryside of Padil. Those who are good two wheeler riders can reach to the point where the waiting boat will take them into the breath taking landscape created by god himself.

The sparkling waters of the Nethravati river, air charged with oxygen, green covered valleys converging at the horizon the only man made structure one can see is the bridge over Nethravati 5 kilometers away.

The beauty unfolds before you once you sit in the boat, as it drifts away from the land the, the only sound you can hear is the sound of water when the boat ploughs through. After 20 minutes of boat ride you arrive at the Gatti Kudru which is exactly on the Eastern bank of Nethravati river.

“I have not seen any tourists coming here. A few people live on the Gatti Kudru who cross from Padil to the Kudru” says boatman Ibrahim. “I have been ferrying people from Padil to Gatti Kudru for over 30 years and things have not changed much ever since,” Ibrahim says he still charged Rs. 10 per person for the crossing.

When I asked Mr. Rico Rodrigues what was the speciality in Gatti Kudru, he told “It is the river. This part of the river is so placid it is like a lake, the water hardly moves. I, my wife and two daughters go to the river and collect mussels which is called ‘Kolu’ it is smaller than the common mussels –Marwayi, but the shell is black in colour and the flesh inside is thicker than Marwayi. Some people from Mangalore who like this very much come here to buy it from us. I also get rock crabs which is a delicacy in many hotels in Mangalore,” he says.

But that is not all, a walk through the Gatti Kudru leads you into the enchanting greenery and thick woods which is hard to come by in the nearby areas.

Ibrahim says he has devised a package boat ride, “I will drop the picnickers after taking them as far as the bridge bring them back and drop them at Gatti Kudru where they have relax. I pick them up back whenever they are ready, all they have to do is let out a cry from the banks of the river and I can hear them all across the river some 1.5 kilometers away” he said with a chuckle. But he had only few takers for this package and he felt sorry that people do not care for such natural beauty and spend their time in mall hopping.

Ajay, in Mysore traffic cops are intelligent, they position their interceptor vehicles in some corner so that drivers don't get a hint that policemen are anywhere nearby. And Guess what? They don't target the residents but tourists! :P They target tourist routes primarily because tourists are mostly one time visitors and they will have no clue of existence of such camera facility.

In Indian Traffic within the city overspeeding is not a big concern at peak hours. What we need at the peak hours is maintaining lane discipline and jumping of signals. This will be more than enough for time being in India. Camera should be used for this purpose.

Interesting..so where is this Cantonment Road? I am sure this is renamed to something else now.

Ajay, locals are aware of such interceptors being used so they normally don't break rules and traffic cops cannot trap them again.Tourist vehicles have no prior info of such interceptors being employed and it is precisely this point the traffic cops cash in on.They are legally right I think :)

In US (and other countries), there are sign-ages to alert the drivers of presence of Traffic cameras! Speed limit too is also displayed prominently at salients locations. This way everyone (tourist or locals) is aware and there are no excuses. The idea is, in long run, people will eventually drive at speed limit as a habit - camera or no-camera. :)

Most places there are warning but on certain sections of motorways they have variable speed limits which changes according to traffic,During peak hours the spped limit reduvces to 60mph and even less in case there is a jam. But there are unmarked police cars .In the Us there are far more police cars tracking the highways and much more strict. In the UK the spped limit on motorways is 70 mph but even if you go on 84 you are safe. In the US 65 is the limit . They will catch you if you exceed it .

Is that 84 an arbitrary number you pulled from thin air or the maximum you dared ? If you are unlucky you can be caught even at 75 ? Most of the time you get away with it.

Legally it is 10% over speed limit but in the UK generally the rules are very lax. Thousands of cars travel well above 90mph but never get caught but 100 mph will surely attract fine and points.Recently the speed limit on the motorway has been increased . That is why I gave a figure of 84. That is arbitary.I am not too sure what the new limit is. It was in the papers but has not become official. At less than 90 police will not target you but more than 90 it is your luck depending on how much above 90 you are! I generally travel between 80 and 85 but the average speed is much lower as at vcertain sections speed might be 50 mph due to road works. At these places you have to be very careful. You will get clicked above 55 mph!

A FRUITFUL EFFORT:The children enjoying and making clay modeling at ‘Scribble 1.1' in Mangalore on Sunday.

MANGALORE: On Sunday morning, at 9 a.m., a handful of organisers were busy setting up desks and banners for a day of activity for children at Tagore Park on Lighthouse Hill Road here. By 10 a.m., 30 children, clutching colour pencils and paint boxes, had appeared. They were attending “Scribble 1.1”, an activity-filled day, organised by Votrasi Imaging, a forum for appreciating art in any form, and Origin Designext, a graphics design firm.

The participants quickly identified quiet nooks or shaded places in the park so that they could concentrate on drawing and painting.

Mangala Naik, class 10, Canara High School, said she was “thinking” (about the topic to paint) as she held the paper in her hand looking for a suitable place to sketch.

Anitha Shetty, Quality Control Officer, MRPL, had come with four children, including her two sons. Ankit, 12, Ashmith, 5, Dikshith, and Akhil, both 10, were ready with the drawing sheets ruled on all four sides and were waiting for the topic to be told.

Once the topic was told, Amit, from Canara School, Dongerkery, and Samyuktha Prabhu of Sharada Vidyalaya chose “Happy Holidays” while Vaibhav Shenoy of Canara School, Dongerkery, preferred “Dreams” as their topics for drawing. Four-year-old Aditi, who is in LKG, was colouring a flower she had drawn with orange crayons.

Vishnu of St. Joseph's College was shooting some flowers before the competition began and discovered that the battery in his camera was running low. However, he said he was not worried as he had brought plenty of cells as backup.

He said: “I got a message on my mobile phone about the event and saw about it on Facebook too. I was looking at a boring Sunday afternoon, so I decided to participate.”

The park is a good place for a photo contest. “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. So we will have to see what photos people get from this place,” he said.

:applause: Tagore Park is centre place of activity...We need more such parks in Mangauru

Another great initiative by the administration to keep up the tag of most Hygiene district in the country..
MANGALORE: The RCB set aside their traditional red and gold attire and went in for their IPL tie against Kochi Tuskers, Kerala, in Bangalore on Sunday, for a special jersey, with light green as its predominant colour with shades of cream. While RCB's green initiative was for that day, taking this task in a more regular way are NSS volunteers of Mangalore University who on Monday become soldiers of Mangalore City Corporation's Green Army.

So when Chaitra J K, Priyanka P, Deeksha K B, Pushparaj, and other students of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya received the Malabar Gold-sponsored Green Army T-shirts from mayor Praveen at the launch of Green Army initiative of MCC here, they had enough reasons to be proud. The name Green Army itself has a weight about it, noted Chaitra, a II BSW student, adding, "The uniform will make us disciplined soldiers for a cause," she said.

Leading by example in spreading the message of cleanliness in their adopted village of Attavar in the city, these students of NSS unit of the college are no strangers to filth and dirt. "The added onus of donning the uniform whenever called upon to spread the message of clean green and progressive Mangalore, initiative of the civic body and going around spreading the message as a team, would make us more focussed on the task on hand," Priyanka noted.

MCC commissioner K N Vijayaprakash said the civic body would encourage a minimum of 10 students each from NSS units of colleges affiliated to the university to join the Green Army. "We are in the process of getting a scientific solid waste management (SWM) system shortly and these soldiers will be useful in undertaking most important task of information, education and communication activities required to make SWM system a success," he said.

The SWM system entails door-to-door collection after segregation of waste at source. Soldiers can spread message in their neighbourhood on these issues, he said. Vinitha Rai, faculty of the School said NSS students use streetplays, slogans to spread message on environment. Now they have added responsibility of creating awareness as members of Green Army, she said. Students will be given the orientation on their role in IEC activities. Vijayaprakash added.

MANGALORE: Sundar Bolar had to pay a price for insisting with the authorities to lay a road hump near Mangaladevi Temple where a number of accidents had occurred.

On Saturday, he could not notice the speed-breaker at night while he was driving on a motorcycle. His wife V.K. Shanta, who was riding pillion, is yet to recover completely from the injuries she sustained.

The speed-breaker came up in front of the Podi Corner following an accident on March 13 in which six-year-old Prajwal was killed. “I was a witness to that accident. I and other residents insisted authorities on having a hump at this point where a number of accidents occurred in the past,” Mr. Bolar said. The road hump was laid on May 2.

On Saturday night, Bolar, a flower merchant and his wife Ms. Shanta were returning home. “We usually come via Cascia School. But I took the route via Monkey Stand Road as we had to attend a ritual,” he said. Mr. Bolar lost control over his motorcycle and his wife fell from it after hitting the speed-breaker. “My wife was lying unconscious on the road,” he said. A few residents helped Mr. Bolar to take his wife to nearby KMC Hospital in Attavar. After scanning and x-ray, the doctors advised Mr. Bolar to take her to the KMC Hospital near Jyothi Circle.

Mr. Bolar said on Sunday he and other residents decided to paint the road hump on their own.:ohno:

Students to be trained to monitor water quality (http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-05-10/mangalore/29527917_1_water-quality-municipal-connections-water-conservation-methods)

STANLEY G PINTO, May 10, 2011, 10.51pm IST

MANGALORE: Having doubts about the quality of drinking water in your locality? Fret not. Nearly 5,000 students from 25 schools in the city will be trained to analyze and monitor water quality with water laboratories.

This unique BASF's `Water Education Programme' aimed at raising awareness on water as a scarce natural resource, was launched in the city on Tuesday as part of UN Habitats `Water for Asian Cities Programme' which lays thrust on having an integrated approach to urban water management for the social, economic and environmental sustainability of cities.

Of the 25 schools, eight schools will be equipped with water laboratories to facilitate water quality monitoring and two schools will have water classrooms demonstrating water conservation methods. Specially trained teachers will guide school students throughout the project. The selection of schools will be done through a rapid assessment survey soon.

Informal education is key to teach students to save water (http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-05-10/mangalore/29527362_1_safe-drinking-water-basf-lakh-project)

MANGALORE: "Value-based formal and informal educational initiatives are key to bring about behavioural change among students regarding water use," said Andre Dzikus, chief, Water and Sanitation Project II, UN-Habitat here on Tuesday.

He was speaking at the launch `Water Education programme,' an initiative of German chemical major BASF in partnership UN Habitat. Dzikus said there was eight fold increase in economic production with $1 investment in water education and sanitation project.

"UN-Habitat has the technology, engineering solutions and financial viability to implement projects to make safe drinking water reach all. Despite encouraging results, statistics show that more people do not have access to safe drinking water and sanitation, and this is where value-based approach is useful, said Dzikus. BASF is the major contributor in the US$ 2.5 lakh project with US$ 1.5 lakh (Rs 67 lakh) and UN-Habitat is supplementing with US$ 1 lakh (Rs 45 lakh).

MANGALORE: In a sudden development, the State Government on Friday transferred Subodh Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada. Mr. Yadav was among the 30 officers who have been transferred.

Mr. Yadav has been posted as Commissioner for Textile Development and Director of Handlooms and Textiles in Bangalore. Channappa Gowda N.S., who was the Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur district, will be the new Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada.

Mr. Yadav was appointed as Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada in October 2010. Before coming to Mangalore, Mr. Yadav was with the Union Ministry of Law and Justice for a year.

Mr. Yadav cracked down on illegal sand mining in Dakshina Kannada. Mr. Yadav accompanied by other officers raided a few places where sand was illegally mined and transported. Following the raids, Minister for Ports J. Krishna Palemar questioned Mr. Yadav's action in a meeting held recently. Mr. Yadav had defended his action stating that it was well within law to carry out raids.

“It has been a very short stint here. I had taken up some of the contentious issues,” Mr. Yadav, who is on a vacation, told The Hindu.

* ‘Soubhagya Sanjeevini' proposes to harness ‘excess water that flows into sea'

MANGALORE: Participants at a workshop on linking rivers in undivided Dakshina Kannada raised serious questions about the fundamental premise and the assumptions on the bases of which the project was proposed, here on Friday.

President of the Coastal Development Authority B. Nagaraja Shetty presided over the workshop on “Soubhagya Sanjeevini”, a project that proposes to link 13 rivers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts to harness “excess water that flows into the sea” during the monsoon.

Chairperson of the Task Force for the Implementation of Third Finance Commission Report A.G. Kodgi said: “Excess monsoon water” could be diverted to augment drinking water supply, improve agriculture through irrigation, generate electricity, flood control, and improve inland fisheries and tourism.

Canal

The proposal envisages construction of a canal that would be 30 ft deep, 50 ft wide at the surface and 300 km in length. Smaller canals at intervals of 10 km would be used to take water where necessary.

The canals would not be lined with concrete beds in order to allow water to percolate into the sub-soil, Mr. Kodgi said.

Taking exception to the concept of “excess water” during the monsoon, S.G. Mayya, professor, Department of Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, said: “How can you determine how much water in a river is ‘excess' when no study on the water requirement of a river basin has been conducted?”

He said several kinds of information and data, including downstream impact, and economic viability were required to make an assessment of the merits of the project.

General secretary of the Coastal Karnataka Fishermen's Action Committee Vasudev Boloor said that the fishermen's community was opposed to the project.

“Our livelihood directly depends on the river water reaching the sea. During the monsoon, river water is rich with nutrients that fish require. The monsoon is also the time when fish come to the estuary to breed.”

President of the Dakshina Kannada Parisarasakta Okkoota Upendra A. Hosabet objected to the eventuality of handing over the management of the project to private companies.

This would deny poor people access to a precious resource, he said. Such a project would result in fragmentation of habitat of species' affecting their survival.

Objecting to the claim that inland fisheries would be improved, Mr. Hosabet said: “Some fish are available only in certain rivers. Diverting water from one river to another would affect its environment and threaten the existence of such fish,” he said. Deputy Director of Mines and Geology B.M. Ravindra said that according to scientists, it was impossible to ensure that the quantity of water planned for the project would actually be available.

Hinting at the problematic nature of calculating the quantity of water in a river, Prof. C. Krishnaiah of the Department of Marine Geology at Mangalore University pointed out that the quantity of water in a river changed from time to time.

Scented candles fuel 35% growth in New Mangalore Port handling
A.J. Vinayak

Scented candles, incense sticks, tea and potpourri - (file photo): T Singaravelou

Mangalore, May 12:
Many of us may not be aware of the fact that the big retail chains in the US get scented wax candles from Mangalore. Manufactured by the Mangalore-based Primacy Industries Ltd at its Baikampady plant on the outskirts of the city, scented wax candles are contribute a significant share to the total container traffic of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT).

The scented wax candles, which were a new addition to the cargo profile of the port six years ago, recorded a growth of 35.65 per cent during 2010-11. The port handled 1,168 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers during 2010-11, against 861 TEUs in 2009-10.

The movement of wax candles from Mangalore began in 2005-06 with 484 TEUs, when Mr T. Gautham Pai, Chairman of Primacy Industries Ltd, met a business family in the US involved in the home fragrance business.

In one of the interactions recently, Mr Pai told Business Line that the US-based family was looking for manufacturing facilities outside the US .

“I always had a liking for good fragrance products and this made me to explore this opportunity,” he said.

According to him, the candle manufacturing unit in Mangalore has a capacity to produce around 1,600 containers a year. Produced in Mangalore, these candles are marketed in the US through retail chains such as Wal-Mart, Pier 1, Candle Artisan, Dollar Store, and so on.

Increase in frequency
Asked about the transit time from New Mangalore to the US market, he said it takes around 24 days to reach the destination. However, he stressed the need for increase in the frequency of container ships calling at the port.

For this, the port officials said the frequency of the ships would increase with the increase in the traffic.

All efforts are being to attract more container cargo at the port, they said.

Mangalore, May 15: The small and attractive isles (kudru) of River Netravati, the life blood of Dakshina Kannada district, are going to be the new tourist destinations in the region. Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa himself has shown interest to give a new shape to these isles and convert them into full-fledged tourist spots through launching boat services.

The thought of developing isles as part of tourism package for Dakshina Kannada-Udupi, had cropped in CM’s mind during his recent visit to Kedakaru Sri Durga Kshetra at Jeppinamogaru, where Sri Mallikarujuna Temple is located.

After discussing with district-in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar and local MLA N Yogish Bhat, Yeddyurappa had announced Rs 50 lakh to introduce two boats for the tourists visiting these isles.

Adam Kudru, Bolla Kudru, Gadasu Kudru, Gatti Kudru, Hosa Kudru and Ranipur Uruliya isles, which are located to the East of the Ullal Netravati bridge come under the ambit of Revenue Department, and those located to the west up to Sultan Batteri falls under Department of Port. Few among these isles are infamous for illicit liquor production.

An experimental boat ride was undertaken on Saturday at the isle, adjacent to Kadekaru Kshetra. Palemar along with media persons too had taken part in the ride organised by the Kshetra.

Yogesh Kumar Jeppu, President of the Kshetra told ‘Coastaldigest.com’ that presently they have one boat equipped with all safety gear and equipment, through which they have planned to attract more tourists to the holy place. Former Navy captain Mohan Prabhu is at the helm of the boat.

Hiranandani Grp to invest up to Rs 3,000 cr in 1 yr

Press Trust of India / Mumbai May 15, 2011, 12:29 IST
Mumbai-based realty major Hiranandani Group plans to invest Rs 2,000-3,000 crore in the next one year for developing residential complexes and commercial spaces, a top company official has said.

"We will invest Rs 2,000-3,000 crore in the next one year to construct residential and commercial structures," Hiranandani Constructions Co-Founder and Managing Director Niranjan Hiranandani told PTI here.

He, however, declined to reveal the markets in which the company would invest. "We are currently focusing on Ahmedabad, Nashik and Pune. We are already coming up in a big way in Chennai, Bangalore and Mangalore."

The group is also eyeing a foray into the power generation segment and is in the midst of setting up a 2,500-MW project with an outlay of over Rs 10,000 crore, he said.

The project, which marks the Group's maiden venture in the power generation business, is located near Pune.

The project will come up in three phases, with Phase-I generating 350 MW of power. However, the venture is facing certain environmental clearance issues, a company spokesperson said.

The Group, which also owns luxury hotels Rodas and Melhua - The Fern, plans to expand its footprint in the segment in India and overseas through the inorganic route, Hiranandani said.

"We are looking to acquire a couple of hotels in India and Dubai... We are waiting for the right opportunity to make our move," he said, adding that the acquisition size would depend on the hotels the group ultimately zeroes-in on.

MANGALORE: The much-expected resumption of the pre-paid autorickshaw counter at the Mangalore Central Railway Station is yet to materialise. It was supposed to be resumed on May 1. Given the signals from officials, the facility may not be realised in a month from now.

At a meeting of the road safety committee chaired by Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav on April 14, it was decided to resume the pre-paid autorickshaw counters at the Mangalore Central Railway Station and the KSRTC bus station. The district administration decided to resume the facility at the railway station on May 1 with infrastructure support from the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The reasons for the delay in resumption of the facility are not clear. Regional Transport Officer N.M. Balavalli said they were waiting for the software from the police relating to the operation of the counters in Mysore and Bangalore. “As soon as it comes, we will upload information about fares for different areas. It might take another month to resume the facility,” he said.

The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh had agreed to operate the counter, he said.

President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry G.G. Mohandas Prabhu said the KCCI had promised to provide infrastructure, including computers, printers and chairs, to resume the facility. But the police had to first get permission from the office of Palakkad Divisional Railway Manager S.K. Raina, he added.

Mr. Raina said he had given permission to the police to resume the facility at the Mangalore Central Station and also at the Kasargod Railway Station.

“It is not our responsibility to manage traffic at the counters,” he added.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Mutturaya said there was no question of the police running the counter.

“We can only assist in operating the counter. It is the autorickshaw drivers' union which has to run it,” he added.

However, Mr. Mutturaya said Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh had sought reports about the way the prepaid counters functioned in Mysore and Bangalore.

“He has also asked for the software. It will be given in a few days,” Mr. Mutturaya said.

Commuters continue to face hardship in getting autorickshaws to places they want to go from the Mangalore Central Railway Station. Autorickshaw drivers demand “Rs. 10 more” or “1.5 times” of the fare displayed on the meter. “Only some drivers demand more. But regular drivers take only Rs. 10 more than what is displayed on the meter. This is necessary to meet the increasing cost of petrol and gas,” said Srikant, autorickshaw driver, who operates from the Mangalore Central Railway Station.

Asked about the pre-paid counter, Mr. Srikant said: “The union that was running the counter functioned only for about six months. It was closed three years ago. I do not know how the new union would operate it as not many drivers are its members.”

New home:An enclosure for exotic birds is getting ready at Dr. Shivarama Karanth Biological Park at Pilikula in Mangalore.

MANGALORE: Dr. Shivarama Karanth Biological Park at Pilikula here will shortly get a pair of hippopotamuses.

Director of the park H. J. Bhandary told The Hindu on Sunday that the park proposed to bring the animals under an animal exchange programme.

Bison

The park would also bring a pair of bison under the programme.

The park proposed to bring two more bears under the programme, he said.

The park now had two bears, he said.

Mr. Bhandary said that the park proposed to exchange animals with the Mysore zoo and the Bannerghatta National Park (BNP) in Bangalore.

The park proposed to send two mouse deer and two barking deer, four pythons, a few snakes and a palm civet to the Mysore zoo and the Bannerghatta National Park, Mr. Bhandary said.

Enclosures

“Enclosures for hippopotamuses and bison are ready at the park here,” he said.

Mr. Bhandary said that the park would also get some exotic birds shortly.

The park was constructing a separate enclosure to house birds such as macaw and cockatoo.

The biological park is spread over 82 hectares of land. It is part of Pilikula Nisargadhama which is spread over 370 acres of land.

Science centre

A regional science centre building is coming up at Nisargadhama.

Itis a good thing to have a bird park. However they must ensure tha enclosure has enough vegtation and breather space for birds.

MANGALORE: The Coastal Development Authority is planning to organise a two-day convention to discuss development of the three coastal districts of the State, president of the authority B. Experts would be invited to present papers related to the development of coastal districts, he said. It would be held in September or October.

He said an investors' meet would be held in December.

Mangalore, May 16: Finally, the Bangalore - Mangalore day train will be extended to Karwar, beginning from June 1.

It has been learnt from reliable sources that the Railway authority has already approved the proposal, following a demand from the people of Udupi, Karwar and surrounding areas. It may be recalled that Railway minister Mamata Banerjee had promised to extend the Bangalore - Mangalore train to Karwar during the this year's Budget session.

Though this news brings relief to the communters of Udupi-Karwar area, for the residents of Mangalore it has come as a dampner as the train will no longer stop at Mangalore Central, but only at Mangalore Junction (Kankanady).

The new train timings are as follows:

Departure from Karwar at 5.30 am
Halt at Mangalore Junction at 10.55 am
After an engine change, leaves for Yashwantpur at 11.15 am
Arrives at Yashwantpur at 10.45 pm

(The train will run only three days a week: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday)

Return:

Departure from Yashwantpur at 7.30 pm
Halt at Mangalore Junction at 5.45 pm
Arrival Karwar at 5.45 pm

(Above trains will operate three days a week: Monday, Wednsday and Friday)

The new timing is expected to create inconvience to passengers of the region, but there is no efforts from elected representatives to improve the timings or convert the trains into superfast. If it is converted into super fast atleast 4-5 hours of journey can be saved.

MANGALORE: While owning a house is becoming increasingly difficult in Mangalore for salaried and Middle Income Group families, renting an apartment or a house also seems to be a near impossible dream. The rentals have shot up three times the levels since 2007. The steepest hike of 60-70% has been in the last six months.

The hike in rentals is 80% in areas situated close to colleges/ tutorials like Kodialbail. Rekha Moily says a two-BHK apartment which was rented for Rs 4,500 last year, costs now Rs 9,000 this year in Kodialbail area. This area is in close proximity to Expert PU College, Sharada Group of Institutions, Canara College and many tutorials. Parents of the wards from Malnad and other regions rent houses here.

S V Deshpande, senior manager of a bank, transferred from Bangalore, is feeling the heat of rentals this summer. His HRA for Mangalore city is half of the prevailing rentals here. "If I pay Rs 2,000 more, over and above the HRA I get for Bangalore, I'll get a good house in a decent locality. But here I have to pay almost double my HRA," says Deshpande. After scouting for a suitable accommodation last week, he has resigned to the fact that bank quarters are the best bet. Deshpande recalled that when he was in the city in 2007, the rentals were in the affordable range of Rs 4,000 to Rs 4,500.

Brokers say the rentals are high as there is a mismatch in demand and supply. There is an influx of population due to city's rapid growth, especially corporates and students. Areas like Kadri, Bejai and Shivbgah is out of bounds for salaried class as they have peaked and hit the Rs 20,000 levels in some cases.

Umesh Babu, manager, Inland Real Estate says the increase in land prices is affecting apartment ownership costs and in turn, the rentals. "An apartment owner wants rentals equal to his EMI. Other house owners followed this trend, he said.

Babu says rentals a 2 BHK in Valencia, Bendore, Bejai, Urva, Kodialguthu, Kodialbail etc., costs Rs 10,000 up 60% from six month levels. A three-BHK costs Rs 15,000 in these areas. Rentals in Mangaladevi hover around Rs 6,000-8,000 levels. All these are 60-70% higher than last year's levels.

The buses look small, no wonder they are cramped!
I would take train at any time... more comfortable

I usually take Durgama sleeper to RT Nagar. With no tickets that weekend, travel agent sold me this as a new bus and blah blah last time around :bash:

Coming to trains -
Getting train tickets is a pain (esp. for impromptu journey).

Add to the list -
- 12-hour journey starting at 7:15pm (reaching station earlier and finding the berth - AC coaches put up in some corner far away from the entrance while they pay the most) and reaching Bangalore at 8:30am or so.
- Train reaches at yestwantpur and I have to haggle with the autowallahs whereas I can reach RT nagar ask someone to pick me up (if I have luggage) or walk to home.
- While returning all buses stop at Ladyhil and I can comfortably walk back instead of paying exorbitantly to Mangalore auto guys while coming from Central or Junction railway stations.

This trend has already started....

Another reason for increasing rents -
Bachelors sharing accommodation (especially working) can afford Rs. 2-3000/- per month on rent and this comes up to Rs. 12k or so for 4 people in a 2BHK. This has increased the expectation from House owners to charge similar rent from Family people too.
Inflation is the main culprit here :bash::bash:
