The farmers of Sulya are growing rubber trees now instead of areacanut. Karnataka Forest Development department is planning to put up a rubber plant in Sulya. Plant put up at a cost of Rs. 500 crores in 50 acres land will provide employment to 500 people. Tyres, tubes, gloves, chappals, mats, candoms, etc will be manufactured in the plant.

At a discussion organised on tourism on Saturday, participants emphasised the need to create a “brand” for Mangalore like Hampi and Mysore that were recognised in the world of tourism.

The discussion was organised by the Department of Tourism, the Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project, and Mangalore Association of Travel Agents.

One of the participants Arvind Prabhu said the problem with the tourism industry in Mangalore was that it had no “brand” value the way Mysore and Hampi had.

Mangalore had a “mixture of attractions” such as temples and beaches, he said.

Mangalore, 24 September 2011: Seeing the present state of tourism in coastal Karnataka, those involved in the tourism sector have demanded that the government to appoint a special officer of IAS cadre to develop the tourism sector and also fix an annual target for tourism department to boost tourism industry in coastal region.

The suggestions were made by the participants during an interactive programme on ‘Future of coastal tourism’ organised by the department of tourism here on Saturday.

Expressing contempt over the way the department of tourism has been functioning in the district, many participants said that there have been blogs and websites which have given a very bad picture of Mangalore on tourism map because of the tourists’ bitter experiences here.

Participant Arvind Prabhu stressed on proper branding of the district just like Mysore and Kerala. Another participant Rohit Rao said that ‘Lonely Planet’ had used a statement which reads: ‘Travellers can easily pass off Mangalore”. Sumeeth Rao said that every citizen wonders as to why Goa ticks and Mangalore does not. “The fact is that here people do not want to mind their own business but want to poke nose into others’ affair.

A boy and a girl cannot walk together in a beach in Mangalore because of moral policing. Let there be responsible policing and not moral policing,” he said.

Marine Biologist Mahesh Raj suggested that marine aquariums should be opened in the coast as this will attract more tourists from other states.

He said that though he had submitted a detailed proposal to set up aquariums in beaches in Coastal Karnataka to the tourism department through deputy commissioner, it has not been cleared by the government yet.

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) Deputy General Manager (corporate communications) Lekshmi Kumaran pointed out that variety of tourism projects can be introduced in the region on the lines of Kerala.

“The district has immense potential for health, pilgrimage, beach and other type of tourisms,” she said.

Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director K Sundar Naik presided while Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project Chief Executive Officer Yathish Baikampady was present.

Akash,
I heard all the electric pole wires will go underground. Already work has started. You can see in the above pic's two thick rubber coated cable are fixed by crane. Later stage it will go underground . Now all over mangalore they started laying this cables.

Please correct if i am wrong.

Only high voltage 11 KV cables will be laid underground as per my understanding. We don't know when they are going to clear so many transformers on footpath constructed illegally by private building owners.

I hope its true. It will be a bonus for mangalorean shoppers.

One more good news is construction will start within three weeks for ramesh kumars Twin tower 5 star hotel cum mall project in MG Road. Last time i mentioned about this project but it didn't go through. But this time its a confirmed new, even he called my friend to have a look the project plan.

That portion is the only stretch in MG Road where one can walk comfortably (except a few times when two wheelers run on it due to traffic jam.) The hotel Divya Comforts is creating enough problems to pedestrians by allowing parking on fottpath itself. I have already mentioned about the busstop being converted to parking lot in front of Ocen Pearl. So by every chance this stretch will also become a pedestrian nightmare once hotel comes up. There is huge pedestrian traffic in MG Road due to colleges like Canara, Besant, SDM Law, Sridevi, Sharada, etc and shoppers.

If you had obeserved, in Bangalore malls like Forum have left footpath intact and more or less safe for pedestrian by allowing vehicle movement only through gates. Same is true for Hotel Leela Palace on Old Airport Road. But alas, in Mangalore whole stretch of footpath is used as a road to enter a small parking lot infront of buildings. It could be Mischief Mall, Pio Mall, Times Square Mall, or even City Center Mall where autoriskshas, cars, two wheelers run on footpath itself. Exception may be TMA Pai Convention Hall where entrire stretch is walled but still the footpath itself is used for parking vehicles when there is crowd of visitors.

The government land in front of this supposed to be footpath but is not walkable due to high lateral gradient. As I posted earlier even busstop here is converted to a parking lot. Disgusting, I do not recommend it to any visitor with human values!

MANGALORE: The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) will establish a Cricket Academy as soon as it gets two to three acres of land within city limits, said Javagal Srinath, ICC match referee and secretary, KSCA on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters after taking part in the World Heart Day run 2011 organized by Kasturba Medical College, Srinath said the academy will have the best of the facilities. "Our aim is to have 150 players, who are ready for the state and national team within two years time of its establishment," he added.

"We want to have the academy within a reasonable distance in the city so that budding crickets can approach the venue easily and spend more time in practice," he added.

He said the mofussil cricket in Mysore and Hubli has seen improvement after KSCA started its work there. He said a cricket stadium in the city was a long term process as it needed large amount of land.

On Sachin Tendulkar's suggestion to ICC having a four 25-over innings rather than the traditional 50-over format, Srinath said it was a good idea. "The cricket is populated with three formats. This format may be a reality in four to five years time," he said.

Srinath offered no comments on Pakistan's fast bowler Shoaib Akthar's sensational claims in his autobiography 'Controversially Yours', saying that it was the bowler's opinion.

For ages, the train has been the lifeline of generations of students from the border regions of north Kerala seeking education in Mangalore. It may be their most preferred mode of conveyance, but, as we found out, also the most dangerous.

Mangalore being the hub of education has a large number of students especially from Kerala travelling a considerable distance every day. A majority of them choose to travel by train, as it is not only cheaper but faster too. Over the years, with advancement in education and the increase in the number of colleges in the city, not to mention employment opportunities, there has been a corresponding increase in the number of passengers in these trains too. However, the number of trains being limited, they are forced to vie for seats or simply 'hang out' precariously, courting danger every day of their lives.

The Chervattoor-Mangalore passenger train, for instance, has 11 compartments, and when it reaches Uppala, around 500 passengers board the train. Another 700 get in at Manjeshwar. With this kind of crowd, it is no wonder that many of them are left hanging on to dear life with just a foot on the doorstep. A slight jerk or a push can prove fatal, but there doesn't seem to be any other option for the hapless students either as they are entirely dependent on the train to ferry them. Another frightening fact is that many a time through the journey, prickly bushes strewn on the side of the railway track brush past the passengers, potentially hurting them.

Most of the students hailing from regions like Hosadurga, Kasargod, Kumble, Uppala, Manjeshwar study in Mangalore and travel by this train putting their lives at risk. Many incidents of falling off the train have also been reported.

Girl students prefer journeying by this train as it is free for them with a monthly pass of just Rs 5. Apart from students, those working in the city also travel by this train.

The situation was not this bad earlier, when the private bus service between Kasargod and Mangalore was in operationin full fledge before a lid was put on it over the issue of permits after a Supreme Court order following nationalisation of roads. A 100 private buses services were stopped, and now only 15 to 20 that managed to renew their permits ply on this route. Moreover, as no pass facility is given to students by KSRTC, students prefer to travel by this jam-packed train.

When the train reach Uppala, it is overcrowded, and after reaching Manjeshwar railway station the situation gets worse. Though there are two ladies'compartments, railway personnel and Railway Mail Service occupy majority of the space in them, it is alleged. Thus girl students are also forced to travel in general compartments wherein incidents of ragging and sexual harassment are reported by victims time and again. A teacher says she once noticed boys misbehaving with girls in the train, but in the absence of security, was helpless. Cases have been registered in Kumble police station, and as a measure to curb this menace, a police personnel was stationed in each of the compartments. But the measure was shortlived, as very soon, the policemen simply stopped boarding the train.

The trend has made parents fear for their children's safety. One parent, whose son studies in a medical college in the city and who travels everyday by this train, says that it is worrying to see his son and scores like him risking their lives. Getting accomadation in the city, where PGs and hostels are already brimming, is not an easy task, he adds.

Despite all the risks and fears, no action seems to be taken by the railway authority to fix the problem, even after an appeal was made to the Phalghat division.

As per one estimate, at least four more compartments in the Chervattoor-Mangalore train is the need of the hour. Also, Maveli train from Thiruvananthapuram could halt at Uppala, Manjeshwar and Kumble stations to lessen the burden and make the journey comfortable and safe for all.

For how long will innocent lives be at risk while authorities turn the other way?

Sources in the Forest department in Mangalore said “the tree park will be a joint venture of the Forest department and Pilikula Nisargadhama. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 1.5 crore. The proposal has already been submitted to the State government.”

“The objective is to develop parks on the lines of Bangalore’s Lalbagh in each district, which will not only be places for people’s amusement but will also help maintain the ecological balance,” said officials.

The Tree Park which will be developed in Pilikula will have ‘Ashoka vana,’ ‘Bamboo vana,’ ‘Pauranika vana,’ ‘Scientific park’ and ‘Medicinal park.’ It will come up in 100 acre land in Pilikula.

The official said “green fencing will be laid for seven kilometer as a part of the proposed project. The department is planning to grow 10,000 to 15,000 trees in the Tree Park. A sum of Rs 20 lakh has been earmarked for digging water percolation ponds, Rs six lakh for taking up soil conservation projects, Rs 15 lakh for water facilities and developing a nursery, Rs 60 lakh for laying paragola, children’s park, digging a pond, creating pathway, drinking water facilities and toilets.

Five unique parks will be developed at the cost of Rs 15 lakh. A sum of other Rs 15 lakh will be earmarked for lightings, employing sweepers, cleaners and laying dustbins, and Rs six lakh will be utilised for the setting up of a theme park, which will provide details on the need for creating environmental awareness, need for parks, trees and the unique feature of the Tree Park etc.”

The tree park will have medicinal plants and saplings of ‘Athi,’ ‘Arali,’ ‘Ashwatha,’ ‘Palasha’.

In Udupi

As the government wants to set up Tree Park in all the districts, the forest department in Udupi has identified land at 80-Badagubettu for the setting up of the Park.

Kundapur Division ACF Manjunath Shetty said: “The Government wants to create proper infrastructure in these parks to attract visitors and make them aware of the importance of conservation of forest.”

Tree park project is envisioned under the model of Lalbagh in Bangalore. The project is in its planning stage in Udupi and will be implemented on Public Private Partnership. About 117 hectare will be used for laying Tree Park. As the project is in its initial stage, only about 25 hectares of land will be covered with seedlings of local species like wild jack, ‘Ashoka,’ ‘Renjala,’ ‘Amla,’ ‘Billerica.’ All these seedlings are grown block wise separately with the idea of merging all together under a tree park. Besides, saplings of ‘Honne,’ ‘Honge,’ and ‘Dupa’ used for oil extraction will also be grown to support the concept of Bio-fuel Park, Shetty informed.

Malabar Builders is planning to raise PE funding for it's township project in Mangalore. The proposed township, spread across 32 acres would need an investment of Rs500Cr. The project is expected to be completed in the next two to three years.

Malabar Builders is the real estate arm of jewelery retail chain - Malabar Gold. It was incorporated in 2008. The company has so far developed five projects, in residential segment apart from several commercial projects including developing outlets for Malabar Gold. The company is also in the process of completing various residential projects in Kerala.

Besides the Mangalore project, it is planning 700,000 sft shopping mall in Thiruvananthapuram with an investment of Rs200Cr and a township at Thrissur, Kerala. It is also developing a shopping mall in Kollam. These projects are expected to ready in the next three to four years.

Recent investments in real estate include Monsoon Capital's $16Mn investment in Phoenix Group's real estate project 'Golf Edge' and JP Morgan's $30Mn investment in Parsvnath Developers Limited's residential project - La Tropicana.

FDI in the real-estate sector last year was the lowest in four years, but private equity activity gained momentum during the recent months, according to a study by Ficci and Ernst & Young.

Between January and June 2011, PE investments in real estate reached $444Mn, 47% higher than the investments made in 2010 during the same period. And, most of the investments are coming from realty-focused funds, says a joint report brought out by Ficci and Ernst & Young.

Puttur, Oct 2: This town will soon be under the prying eyes of surveillance cameras, joining the elite club of metros and cities in the country.

The police here have decided to have surveillance cameras installed at strategic points in the city.

A team of experts made a study of important junctions and other points which would require such monitoring on Saturday, Oct 1. They are understood to have selected the Darbe junction, Bolwar junction, bus stand and the mini Vidhan Soudha to begin with.

The images beamed by these cameras will been seen on a large screen in the control room of the city police station. This step has been taken in view of the increasing traffic density and population.

It may be noted that the cases of theft in city and around are on the rise at an alarming rate. Recently the consumers' forum from here had made fervent appeals to the state home minister, home secretary and the chief minister seeking early installation of this equipment.

The cameras are likely to be helpful in tracking down offenders in theft cases and also keep watch of persons moving around suspiciously in the nights.

* Leaders of autorickshaw unions demand revision of minimum fare

Prepaid autorickshaw counters at Mangalore Central Railway Station and KSRTC bus stand at Bejai are set to be re-opened again from Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada N.S. Channappa Gowda told presspersons here on Wednesday that the district administration would provide infrastructure facilities to the counters which would be opened on Gandhi Jayanthi. He said that manual receipts would be given to passengers till computerised receipts were ready.

Mr. Gowda said that a decision on opening a prepaid autorickshaw counter at Mangalore Junction Railway Station would be taken later. Earlier, Mr. Gowda, who is the chairman of the Regional Transport Authority, Dakshina Kannada, conducted a meeting with autorickshaw drivers in the city to hear their demand for the upward revision of travel fares.

At present, the minimum fare stood at Rs. 15 up to 1.5 km and Rs. 11 for the next every one km.

They said that upward revision was necessary because of the increase in fuel prices and spare parts.

The leaders said that there were about 25,000 families depending on earnings by autorickshaw drivers in the city.

Advocate Susheel Noronha, who represented the civil society, said many drivers were collecting excess fares.

They were demanding fares much more than the metered fare for travelling from KSRTC bus stand and railway stations especially early mornings and late evenings.

There were about 5,000 autorickshaws in the city.

Mr. Gowda said that the RTA would announce its decision later as it had to protect the interests of passengers as well as the drivers.

Labu Ram, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada, and Member-Secretary, RTA, and C. Mallikarjuna, Regional Transport Officer, Mangalore, and Secretary, RTA, were present.

The Kadri Park which remained neglected over the years will see a change soon with the authorities submitting an action plan for the comprehensive development of the park at an estimated cost of ' 5 crore, writes Naina J A

The Kadri Park, an oval shaped sprawling green park on Kadri Hills, has been attracting the kids with its garden, toy train and a mini kinder garden for the last several years.

The records in the department of horticulture say that in 1963, the land was acquired to construct the park from Kadri Jogishwara Mutt. The park came up in 1969 and was handed over to horticulture department in 1970. The Kadri Park is broken into three land pieces: One towards the east of the National Highway which spreads 4.61 acres; the central land measuring 7.9 acres; and the land towards the west which measures 1.76 acres.

The park wears a new look when the annual flower shows are held every year. However, at other time, the bushes and tall weed grown all along on the sides of the pathway were a common thing. Even now the swings for the kids inside the park have broken. The park attracts several morning and evening walkers, who are forced to bear with the problems.

For the comprehensive integrated development of the park, the Horticulture department has come out with a proposal which has been sent to the government for approval. Once the proposal is approved, then development work will be implemented through the horticulture department.

` 5 crore

Speaking to City Herald, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayaprakash said former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa had announced Rs five crore towards the development of the park last year. Accordingly, the horticulture department prepared an action plan. In fact, a sum of Rs 15 crore would be required for the comprehensive development of the park. In the first phase, the work at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore will be undertaken once the Horticulture department gets green signal from the State government.

He said as per the proposal, the work on the modernisation of the park would be undertaken. Special empahsis would be given for landscaping. The entire park would be made green by planting saplings and flower bearing plants.

Aims at greenary

“The proposal aims at creating greenery in the park. The children’s park inside Kadri Park will be given special emphasis by installing swing, and hi tech toy train will be introduced. Walking tracks would be laid for the visitors to walk around the park while enjyoing the flowers inside the park.”

“A beautiful flower garden will also be laid. Joggers track will also be laid,” he said.

The park has 25-metre wide and 60 metre long skating rink, ‘Pargola,’ a granite permanent structure has been erected. Apart from this, granite benches have been installed at the park for the visitors. “Water clogging was a big problem in the park during rainy season. However, the work on drainage facilities will be undertaken to avoid water clogged park during monsoon,” he said. Flower bearing plants will be planted in all those spaces in the park.

Musical fountain

A cultural stage will be created to facilitate cultural programmes in the park. On the model of Mysore, a musical fountain with colourful lights will also be laid.

High mast lamps will be erected around the park to give a new look to the park, said the CEO.

MANGALORE: The Western Ghats Task Force (WGTF) has insisted that the central and state governments should give more emphasis on biodiversity while implementing projects to prevent sea erosion.

WGTF chairman Ananth Hegde Ashisara said here on Saturday that the matter had been discussed with officials concerned and ministers. "Building stonewalls at vulnerable places do not help check sea erosion effectively. Raising shelter belt involving green walls of casuarinas all along the coastal line is an effective alternative method for prevention of sea erosion. Casuarinas belt acts as a green wall to control erosion and it is a reasonable investment too. Firewood from the belt can be used as fuel and also as poles for construction," he said adding that dumping of boulders at the sea coast at huge cost is not economically and environmentally a viable option.

A total of 140 hectares of coastal area in Mangalore has already been converted into a shelter belt. "Involvement of the public is important in protecting the coast. For this a grama aranya samiti (village forest committee) has been opened at Sasihithlu with 1,301 members. Two more samitis will be set up in Panambur and Ullal in Dakshina Kannada district," he said.

Ashisara said that 10 more forests had been identified as medicinal plant conservation areas (MPCA) in Karnataka. "Currently, there are 13 MPCAs in the state. Rare and endangered species of medicinal plants in the state will be preserved through the scheme," he said.

Counter to be run by MATA; 400 autorickshaws to operate at railway station
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00798/02_mnrav_pre-paid_a_798747e.jpg
Agreement reached: Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh at the inauguration of prepaid autorickshaw counters in Mangalore on Sunday. — PHOTO: H.S. Manjunath

Prepaid autorickshaw counters were reopened at the Mangalore Central Railway Station and KSRTC bus-stand at Bejai from Sunday. This time they would be managed by Mangalore Association of Travel Agents (MATA).

N. S. Channappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman, Regional Transport Authority, Dakshina Kannada, told presspersons here on Sunday that MATA would collect Rs. 1 per slip issued to passengers in addition to the prepaid travel fares fixed by the RTA.

He said the RTA had prepared fare chart for different destinations. The MATA had been directed to display the same in the counters.

Mr. Gowda said drivers of autorickshaws would have to turn on the fare meters from the two starting points (bus-stand and the railway station) till reaching the destination for which he or she had paid the fare in advance (call it the prepaid destination). If a passenger wanted to continue the travel, he or she should pay the balance amount as shown in the metre after reaching the desired destination. But the drivers were not supposed to turn on the metres afresh from the prepaid destination and claim the balance fare on that basis after reaching the final destination.

The Deputy Commissioner said the drivers could collect fares one-and-a-half times' excess of the actual fare displayed in the meters in the city corporation limits between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. They could collect the excess fare from passengers round-the-clock if an autorickshaw was hired beyond the corporation limits.

Mr. Gowda said manual prepaid receipts would be issued to passengers for 15 days. Computerised receipts would be issued later. The prepaid facility at Mangalore Junction Railway Station would be opened after a fortnight.

Complaints

The Regional Transport Officer of Mangalore C. Mallikarjuna said if there were complaints, people could call the RTO office on 2220577. The RTO officials would attend to the complaints beyond office hours, might be early mornings or late evenings, he said.

In addition, people could call the police on 100. Mr. Mallikarjuna said that the counter at the KSRTC bus-stand would be opened from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The counter at the railway station would be ready whenever trains arrived at the station.

He said the prepaid autorickshaw committee comprising representatives of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), unions of autorickshaw drivers, MATA, and RTA would meet and review issues if any and resolve them.

The intention of the committee was that the facility reintroduced should not be stopped for any reason. It should continue by resolving issues amicably, he said.

Passengers need not pay any luggage charge up to 20 kg. Thereafter, one had to pay Rs. 2 as charge for every 20 kg, he said.

Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police Dakshina Kannada Labhu Ram, and president of KCCI Latha R. Kini were present.

President of MATA Roshan Pinto told The Hindu that 400 autorickshaws operated under the prepaid facility at the railway station between 9 a.m. and 6.30 p.m.

At the bus-stand, 100 autorickshaws operated under the facility during the same period.

It has proposed to raise a capital of Rs. 5 crore
The proposal awaits Government's approval

The Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation is considering opening a bank in Mangalore through which women can get loans under various schemes.

Corporation's Chairperson Sarojini Bharadwaj told presspersons here on Monday that the proposed bank would facilitate women to get loans aimed at women's empowerment. At present, all the loans were not being handled by a single bank. Members from the self-help groups could open their accounts with the bank and keep their savings, she said.

Ms. Bharadwaj said modalities of the nature and functions of the bank were being worked out. The corporation had proposed a capital of Rs. 5 crore. For the first few years, the operation of the bank would be outsourced to a private company. “A proposal has been sent to the State Government. If we get the approval, the first such bank will start functioning in Mangalore,” she said.

Ms. Bharadwaj said there had been good response from women in Shimoga for the Jeevan Saathi scheme meant for street vendors. In this scheme, street vendors got loan ranging between Rs. 500 and Rs. 5,000 in the morning which was returned in the evening. This scheme was being implemented in Shimoga, Mysore, and Gadag districts.

She said the corporation was working towards creating a market for the products prepared by women's self-help groups. Modalities were being worked out to hold some buyer-seller melas in different parts of the State. It was trying to establish business links between the self-help groups and the corporate houses. One such link had been between the Fab India and a self-help group in Gulbarga wherein the latter would supply 3,500 shirts to the former.

Ms. Bharadwaj said the corporation was yet to create a permanent marketing facility for the self-help groups near Bharath Mall in Mangalore. She said there were differences between the Corporation and the Department of Women and Child Welfare.

Ms. Bharadwaj said she had been conducting gram sabhas to create awareness among women about various welfare schemes. She has so far held gram sabhas at 33 places, besides 15 “Grama vastavya” programmes (staying in a house in a village). “Women, who cannot come to the gram sabhas, come and meet me at the house,” she said. So far, she has stayed in 15 different houses.

On Monday night, she will be staying at the house of Bindu Sadashiva in Aryapu village, Ms. Bharadwaj said.

* Mangalore taluk spent Rs. 1.22 crore of the available amount of Rs. 4 crore

Mangalore, 05 October 2011: The progress made in the Central government schemes is far too short of the target in Dakshina Kannada. This emerged at the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting, chaired by Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel here on Tuesday.

In Puttur, only Rs. 60.88 lakh had been spent so far out of total funds of Rs. 6.12 crore available for expenditure under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS).

This accounted for a mere 9.94 per cent of the allocation. The amount available for expenditure included Rs. 2.96 crore carried forward from last year.

Over 90 per cent of the funds were to be spent in the remaining six months of the financial year. In the case of other taluks, the expenditure was higher.

Mangalore taluk for example had spent Rs. 1.22 crore whereas the amount available for expenditure was over Rs. 4 crore.

The other taluks had huge amounts carried forward. In the case of Belthangady, it was Rs. 2.55 crore, Rs. 2.44 crore in Sullia, Rs. 1.72 crore in Bantwal, and Rs. 1 crore in Mangalore.

Mr. Kateel pointed out that in the first quarter of the year, the achievement of some schemes such as Swarna Jayanathi Rozgar Yojana was a mere 3 per cent and in MNREGS a mere 5 per cent. “You know how to circumvent rules when you want. You point out limitations only when we want you to achieve targets,” Mr. Kateel said.

Mr. Kateel and Deputy Secretary of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat K. Shivaramegowda asked the officials to speed up the construction of Bharat Nirman Rajiv Gandhi Rural Sewa Kendras which were aimed at MNREGS offices at panchayat and block-levels and facilitate knowledge resource centre on the scheme.

Mr. Kateel wanted the officials to bring to his notice any problems they faced so that solutions could be found early. He expressed unhappiness about the progress in the implementation of Indira Awas Yojana.

When a member of the Vigilance and Monitoring Committee Yatiraj Shetty said that problems in obtaining small farmer certificates had been hampering the progress of the NMREGS work, it was decided to ensure that taluk-level officials send a booklet containing panchayat-wise land holding details to the officials concerned. An officer pointed out that this booklet would be useful only if it was sent by the end of this month as an action plan was to be prepared by November for the scheme.

He said a delegation of MPs from Karnataka had urged the Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh to include the State in the Prime Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana but the Minister had expressed his helplessness.

Karnataka had been dropped from this year saying the scheme was needed more for less developed States.

The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd. (CAMPCO) is all set to release three new premium chocolates to market within two months. It is set to commission two more windmills by the end of this month.

CAMPCO is a multi-State cooperative society of Karnataka and Kerala farmers. Its chocolate factory at Puttur in Dakshina Kannada is the only one managed by a cooperative body in the State and Kerala.

Suresh Bhandary, General Manager, CAMPCO, told The Hindu that of the three premium chocolates which would be released, two would be moulded with each bar priced at Rs. 20 and the other one would be an enrobed one which would be priced at Rs. 10 a bar. They would be released either by this month end or next month. “With this, CAMPCO will have 25 varieties of chocolates,” he said. Mr. Bhandary said that orange flavour of Krust, a choc mass coated wafer biscuit, was released at the annual general body meeting of CAMPCO here last month. This would be available in the market soon.

The CAMPCO would be commissioning two more windmills with each having 0.85 MW capacities at Chikkodi in Belgaum district by the end of this month. Together, the two windmills were expected to generate between 30 lakh units to 35 lakh units of power a year. They would supply power to its chocolate factory at Puttur through KPTCL power supply lines.

The cooperative owns a 1.25 MW capacity windmill at Halthimalapura in Hoovinahadagali taluk, Bellary district, which was commissioned on March 31, 2009. It generated 25 lakh units of power in 2009-10 and 21 lakh units in 2010-11.

Mr. Bhandary said that once the units at Chikkodi were commissioned, the cooperative expected to generate 57 lakh units of wind energy a year from windmills. The factory at Puttur required about 60 lakh units of power a year. With this, the factory would move towards self-reliance in power.

Sales

According to the annual report of CAMPCO for 2010-11 released at its annual general body meeting last month the sales of its chocolate division grew by 30 per cent.

It sold chocolates amounting to Rs. 49.72 core and cocoa industrial products (like cocoa powder, cocoa butter, cocoa mass) worth Rs. 73.97 crore. The total production at the factory stood at 13,623.60 tonnes. It exported 830 tonnes of drinking chocolates worth Rs. l8.66 crore.

Sportspersons from this region will be able to practice on a synthetic track from early 2012 if everything goes as planned.

The tender for the Rs. 3.15 crore synthetic track was opened recently in the Office of the Deputy Commissioner and the lowest bidder, Delhi-based sports infrastructure company Syncotts International, has been given four months to complete the work.

However, the sources in the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs said that the process of awarding the work was not completed as yet. The recommendations from the department here were being forwarded to the higher ups in Bangalore. A final work order would be issued only after the approval is received.

A demand of the Dakshina Kannada Athletics Association for providing various facilities in either sides within the tracks (“D” area in sports parlance) has been taken into consideration. Though the original tender had a provision for sports facilities only on one D, a decision has been taken to recommend development of facilities in both the D areas.

Sports officials told The Hindu that the stadium committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda had decided to recommend to the Department of Sports to allocate additional funds to facilitate creation of facilities in either side. It could cost Rs. 40 lakhs.

Secretary of the Association Arun Rao told The Hindu that good stadiums had facilities for pole vault, javelin throw, and shot put in one D area and infrastructure for the other throw events (such as discuss throw) and long jump in the other D area.

If all these facilities are provided in a single D area, the stadium authorities would require more time than usual for conducting different events as they would not have the advantage of holding events simultaneously. Since all the throw events, pole vault, and high jump will have to be held in a single D area, sports authorities will need more time to hold a tournament.

Mr. Rao expressed happiness that the long struggle for a synthetic track for Mangaloreans was now coming to an end. Athletes practising on cinder track here had trouble performing on synthetic tracks when they participated in national-events, which are nowadays essentially held on synthetic tracks, because of the extra bounce. “Some athletes experience muscle-tightening.” Then, during rainy season athletes had difficulties on wet tracks. There was no such problem with a synthetic track.

In view of the problems with synthetic track in Gagad and Kodagu districts, the Deputy Commissioner has agreed to constitute a vigilance committee to ensure quality work, he said. Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly N. Yogish Bhat and MLC Ganesh Karnic had made the suggestion, he said.

When the earlier plans to set up a Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre here in 2007 were shelved because of “local politics,” the athletes were disheartened.

The latest development was encouraging, Mr. Rao said.

The stretch between KPT junction and Maravoor in Mangalore on Monday was renamed Sir M.Visvesvaraya Road. Photo: H.S. Manjunath

Minister for Ports, Environment and Science and Technology and in-charge of Dakshina Kannada district J. Krishna Palemar said here on Monday that the work on constructing a bus-stand at Pumpwell here would begin soon.

At a function organised by Mangalore City Corporation to name the airport road from Karnataka Polytechnic Junction to Maravoor after Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the Minister said the project to build the bus-stand at Puumpwell was on. He scotched speculation about the project being put on the backburner.

The Minister said the corporation officials should complete the work within six months.

To question, he said the construction would begin “in one or two days.”

Asked if an issue over constructing an underpass between Mahaveera Circle and Nanthoor Junction with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had been sorted out, the Minister said the NHAI had agreed to consider it favourably.

The corporation Commissioner, Harish Kumar, said it had been planned to start the construction on a low key and expand it in a phased manner. He said the proposed bus-stand would act as the hub for city buses and service buses that operate from satellite stations like Kankanady. Buses currently operating from the State Bank of India terminus would not be shifted to the new bus-stand.

The Minister said pavements and storm-water drains would be built along the 7-km stretch of the four-lane concrete road (Sir M. Visvesvaraya Road) between the KPT junction and Maravoor. Nirmiti Kendra would build them. Builders in the city would provide workers.

Mr. Palemar also inaugurated these works.

The Minister said that the road had been concreted at an estimated cost of Rs. 29.32 crore. Of this, the corporation had contributed Rs. 4.57 crore,

GRANT

Rs. 12.50 crore had been drawn from State Finance Commission under its grant to the corporation during 2008-09, and Rs. 12.25 crore from a Union government scheme called ASIDE (Assistance to States for Developing Export Infrastructure and Allied Activities).

Mangalore City South MLA and Deputy Speaker in the Assembly N. Yogish Bhat and Mayor Praveen spoke.

Mangalore: Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) president Latha R Kini has urged the authorities and people representatives to take up several key issues on a priority basis.

Addressing the media at the KCCI premises here on Tuesday, October 11, she listed them as setting up a fire station at Baikampady Industrial Area, initiating the process of setting up of a fishing harbour in Kulai, declaring Bajpe airport as an international airport, construction of footpaths in the city, immediate repair of highways and setting up of a pre-paid auto booth at Mangalore Junction railway station.

She revealed that there was no fire station in the Baikampady Industrial Area which houses oil and fuel storage terminal and an LPG bottling plant among other industries. Speaking on the condition of roads, she said that the connectivity to the capital city of the state had been seriously hampered on account of pathetic road condition of the Shiradi ghat road.

As for the problem of load-shedding that had affected the state, she said that it had impacted the whole state. 'It is unexpected and unprecedented,' she said.

KCCI vice president Mohammed Ameen and former president G G Prabhu were also present.

A pre-paid autorickshaw booth at Mangalore Junction Railway Station in Kankanady must be set up as had been done in the Mangalore Central Railway Station and at KSRTC bus-stand, said Latha R. Kini, president, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).

She told presspersons here on Tuesday that the system had been working on a trial basis at the railway station. “The mapping has to be done (for the software-based system). We are looking into the details and it is not yet finalised,” she said. The software was from National Informatics Centre (NIC). Ms. Kini said there was a need for a dedicated fire station in the Baikampady Industrial Area, where thousands of people worked. “We hope the fishing harbour (at Kulai) would be a reality soon,” she said. The State government in its 2011-12 budget had announced Rs. 100 crore for building small fishing harbours, she said.

A KCCI release said although international flights operated from Bajpe Airport, it was yet to get the international status. The new terminal and new setup were of international standards and hence the airport needed to be declared as an international airport, it said. Authorities must pay attention to the demand for bus stops and pavements in the Mangalore City Corporation area and the Baikampady bridge, she said.

The former president of KCCI, G.G. Mohandas Prabhu, said two months ago the Karnataka High Court delivered a judgment wherein the Bunder was declared a “sub yard”. Traders could continue to trade at either the Bunder yard or the APMC Baikampady yard while farmers and consumers could use both yards. “It is win-win situation for all,” he said.

There is an article in rediff.com which lists 36 cities that are projected to be key growth centres. 3 cities of Karnataka have made it to the list. Mangalore, Belgaum and Mysore. Although the population figure of Belgaum seems to be wrong, projections look proper.

About Mangalore:
http://im.rediff.com/money/2011/oct/11city5.jpg

Mangalore

Population (2011) - 399,565

Education/colleges - 36

Graduates - 20,888

Size of the city - 132.45 square km

Why future city:

A premium education centre of Karnataka. Has the potential to be an important business and industrial hub with the port acting as a key catalyst for trade and business.

Its importance as an educational centre is pitching it into a new knowledge city in the state, especially for BPO, research and marine sector.

Ideal for business in - port, education, trading, and IT.

Major information technology (IT) and outsourcing companies like Infosys, Wipro, and MphasiS BPO have established a presence in Mangalore.

hope something like this comes across Nethravathi in future if govt is planning to connect IT SEZ/University in Konaje directly through other routes..

Cane furniture is eco-friendly and gives a decent look to your interiors. There are four youth who have come all the way from Fatehpur Sikri to sell these produce to Mangaloreans, writes Naina J A

http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/10/07/dist-mang-fathepur-sikri.jpg

Some of the modern home owners are going in for cane furniture as it gives an antique and natural look to the interiors. The lightweight cane and sturdy bamboo spells out both simplicity and comfort.

While most of the people love to relax on cosy cane furniture, there are four youth from Fatehpur Sikri near Agra making those perfect sets of furniture in front of Jeppu Seminary under a huge tree.

In an age of luxury furniture stores, these roadside cane furniture sellers sweat it out to eke out a living. The cacophony of the busy road combined with the sweltering heat of the summer sun only makes their job harder.

With a tree to sit under, it is only sheer determination that prompts people like Babloo and his three companions namely Dharmendra, Boodev Singh and Tinku to sell cane furniture on the streets of the city.

Speaking to City Herald, Babloo said: “We four go to different parts of India and sell our produce. There is good market for cane chairs and stools in Chennai and Kerala. After Deepavali, we will go to Chennai.”

The four youth are going places not just with bundle of canes, they carry bundle of dreams as well. Cane chairs are not only adorning gardens and drawing rooms of the huge bunglows but are also seen in pubs and bar counters.

They have round single seaters of various sizes. Single garden chairs with back rests. The expert hands of these youth make two chairs in one day. One requires atleast four hours to make a chair with back rests. While one can make atleast five small stools in a day, he says.

“Back in village, my villagers are either artisans involved in making cane furnitures or agriculturists. I have learnt this art from my parents. In our village, only males in the family carry out this profession,” he said and added: “I ventured into this profession four years ago after my intermediate. We purchase bundles of cane from Rajasthan.”

Asked about the weight they can withstand, he said they could easily take up to 200 kg. Babloo is married two months ago and will be leaving back to his native for Deepavali. After one month rest in his village, the four youth will once again start their journey to Chennai with the hopes of better deal.

Cermics
Dozens of beautifully painted vases and pots of numerous shapes, sizes and colours are being sold at the same spot by Babloo and his companions.

These painted ceramic articles have been brought to the city by Babloo and several others from Delhi. Some three-foot tall vases with floral patterns in red, yellow and blue are up for sale.

The ceramic products are sold between Rs 50 and Rs 800. Ceramic pots and wide bowls of different sizes are also available.

Mangalore: A sum of Rs 372.94 crores has been allotted for the development and maintenance of various projects in the district for the year 2011-2012, said zilla panchayat president K T Shailaja Bhat at a press meet held in the ZP premises here on Friday, October 14.

The grants released by the government shall be used for the complete development of the district, she said. She also revealed that a comprehensive 'Vision Document' had been prepared by the district administration, taking into consideration all the problems of the region and it would be submitted to the chief minister in the presence of all the people's representatives of the region. Projects in the 'Vision Document' are estimated to be about Rs 2500 crores.

She was confident that the CM would release more funds. Answering the queries of the media she said she expected the present CM to do what former CM B S Yedyurappa for Shikaripura and Shimoga.

Fortysix multi-village water supply schemes, 257 vented dams would be among the prominent projects to be completed this year. Money for solid waste managements in Ujire of Beltangady taluk and Kadaba of Puttur taluk had been sanctioned by the Malnad Region Development Board, she said.

Several projects for the development of tourism in the region were also initiated, she said. Noting that the condition of the roads in the region had deteriorated, she said that the chief minister had promised to sanction Rs 13.14 crore required to get the roads in the region repaired.

She was also confident that since the CM was from Dakshina Kannada district he would allot more funds for the overall development of the district.

Answering queries about the repeated absenteeism of the officials at the ZP meetings, she replied that letters had been written to their respective higher authorities.

ZP vice president Dhanalaxmi Janardhan, standing committee for social justice and other officials of the district were present at the gathering.

Is Mangalore's population 484 ,000 as per 2011 census.

Anyway nice to know that Literacy rates have gone beyond 90%.

One thnk important to know it is the quality that is important. The only advantage that increase population could bring is the additional funds that comes from central govt but are these funds really enough for all projects?. At the end of the day it is the human index that is important.

I t is also true that lot of Mangalore population resifde just outside the corporation limits. I think this is the same in Kerala as well.

Mangalore is the coastal city of Karnataka located on the Arabian Sea and highly blessed with breathtaking scenic beauty. It is one of the major ports of India that is around 300 kilometres away from the state capital, Bangalore. Mangalore is seen as the next IT destination as after exploring the market potential in Bangalore and Mysore, leading IT and ITes companies are moving to Mangalore.

According to reports by international property research agencies, the saturation of major IT hubs like Bangalore has lead to a boom in the overall development of tier-III and tier- IV cities. On their look out for new technology centres, corporate leaders are ready to establish their presence it tier-III cities like Mangalore. The main reason for giving preference to such upcoming cities is that:

- There is a lot of land available easily unlike the fully developed cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, etc. that are now almost choked.

- The scope for development and leveraging huge returns on investments is much higher than in metro cities as they have already had a booming era.

- Property prices are much lower than in tier-I and tier-II cities and with government slashing the rates further to encourage more investments, corporate players evaluate golden opportunities coming forth in smaller towns.

The cultural environment and lifestyle practiced in a city also attach important values to its development. Mangalore is considered to be a welcoming city full of friendly people, homely atmosphere and beautiful seas. It is a pleasant place that gives you many reasons to visit, stay and enjoy its serene surroundings featuring rolling hills, coconut palms, freshwater streams, and red-clay tiled-roof buildings. This mesmeric city, as per leading real estate consultants, now ranks second among the fastest growing cities of India in terms of real estate development.

Mangalore is now targeted by top investors and IT giants as their next business centre leading to its fast paced growth. The entry of BPO industry and Special Economic Zones (SEZs) play a vital role in taking the property prices to unimaginable heights. The connectivity and infrastructure of the city is all set for a makeover with upgradation of its airports, railways and roads. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has funded Rs 350 crore to improve the water supply and drainage system in the city.

This city already houses some of the major industries like Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd, Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers, BASF, Nagarjuna Power, GMR Group, Suzlon, etc. Other crucial developments include:

- Infosys is coming up with a 300-acre IT SEZ in Konaje.
- Satyam and Wipro are also expected to set up a base in an area of 200-acre.
- ONGC has planned to invest Rs 35,000 crores in an upcoming SEZ in the city.

Various major companies are in a flurry to introduce their presence in the city as Mangalore property prices will double up very soon.

In the last one year, a moderate hike of 10-25 per cent has been recorded in rates of prices of property in Mangalore but it is expected to increase two to three folds. Owing to the coming up of so many industries, the population of professional migrants is also rising resulting in a higher demand for housing spaces. Also, being close to important cities of Karnataka like Bangalore and Mysore, Mangalore is flocked by property investors and developers from across the country. The demand for service apartments is also surging high due to the consequently large number of professionals and tourists.

Mangalore, today, has marked its position among the top eight tier-III and tier-IV cities that are soon to emerge as huge growth centres of India.

Deepika Bansal writes on behalf of 99acres.com, which is an internet portal dedicated to meet every aspect of the consumers needs in the real estate industry. It is a forum where buyers, sellers and brokers can exchange information. At 99 acres, you can advertise a property in India, search for a property, browse through Mangalore Real Estate & Properties

Request to Moily to give trains & new railway lines

A request is made to union minister Moily to sanction new railway lines and rails to coastal area. Padubidre-Karkala-Ujire-NettaNa railway line blueprint is ready. It will start from Nandikoor on Konkan railway line, running parallel to padubide-Kuduremukha N.H. it will pass through Karkala, Bajagoli, Naravi, ALadangadi and reach Ujire and then get connected to DharmnasthaLa-SubramaNya railway station. Also from Ujire it will pass through NiDgal, MunDaje, CharmaDi, Neriya Hebbar Estate, Yenepoya Estate, pass through valleys of north-south hills at SomanakaDu area. It can reach Kottigehara through 2-3 tunnels and through BaNakal, HaLemooDigere get connected to under construction Kadooru-ChikkkamagaLUru-Hasana railway line, if ChikkanahaLLi and Arehalli connection is provided it can become an alternative line to bengaLUru. There is not much problem to get clearance as there is very less forest area in the surveyed part. But, as the other proposed Byndooru-Kolluru-KarkaLa-Venoor line pass through dense forest area it will be difficult to get clearance from forest department. This information is provided by Railway Yatri Sangha President RL Dias.

We should cheer that they are adding 2.5k seats to existing 5k which is 50% addition. While akash's source says "expected employees when zone is complete" and then built up area would be 31 lakh sqft, but as of this sept 30th only 8.31 lakh is built up area. Expected completion when god knows. Hope at least one mangalorean will agree with me :ohno: Mysore more is because it is "infosys leadership institute" training center.

I would not compare Bangalore to Mangalore. Bangalore is far too big.One could compare Bangalore to Mumbai,Delhi etc.

Bangalore has changed beyond recognition.I have been visiting the city since 70's . I worked there in the early 90's and then last trip was two years ago after a gap of 17 years!

Used to enjoy Bowring club parties! Not sure if that club is still there!

A car negotiates a curve at the Dirt Track Race (AutoCross-2011) at Kulur, in Mangalore on Sunday.

Sunday morning saw excited youngsters, mostly boys, descending on to a racing track in Kulur, off National Highway 66, venue for Maruti Suzuki Auto Cross 2011, a national event organised by the Mangalore Motor Sports Association. By 10 a.m., the track came alive with the sound of two and four wheelers. Announcements requesting participants to “Report to the starting point,” or to track marshals to take position with the flags were made. Rallyists buckled on helmets, donned gloves, chest numbers, and gear to cover their knees, shins and elbows.

At the beginning, the bikers were tense, all set to speed through the track of 800 metres for the qualifying as well as the final rounds. Once flagged off, dust flew as the competing two-wheelers accelerated amidst the smell of petrol and rubber. While the qualifying round had 60 participants, the final round had 40 finalists, said Sudhir BK, president, Mangalore Motor Sports Association, which consists of 12 members, mostly former rallyists.

There was one stretch facing the rallyists, which most of them negotiated when they begun. But while returning from the laps, it seemed to be a tough spot with one biker falling down while negotiating it. As the rallyists were on the track, continual requests were made to spectators, especially children, to watch from a safe distance and not to stand at the turnings.

“Too many pebbles. It's not easy, one slip and you are out of the race,” said Suail Ahmed from Mangalore, after returning from the race. “The track design is lovely and experience matters,” he said.

Chethan Kumar from Puttur, back from the first race, said, “It's good but not very challenging.”

Yathish Baikampady, cor-ordinator of the event, said the track had been left as it was. “Some turns are very difficult. Unless they are skilled, they can't maintain the speed. Although the tyres have buttons, the gravel will hit, like bullets,” he said.

The event began in the morning with bunches of spectators, mostly curious children and teenagers from nearby areas.

By afternoon, however, the place began to get crowded as more spectators came in.

Later, in the afternoon, Arjun Rao Aroor, rallyist and national champion in 1600cc, took Anwar Manippady, Chairman, Karnataka State Minorities Commission on a demo trip. He took Aroor Kishore Rao, Chairman and MD, Arvind Motors, Mangalore. However, the vehicle appeared to have developed a snag during the second demo trip.

Wow...Mangalore is truly becoming cosmopolitan in all sense. :applause:

just let the corporation start including ullal, thokktu and deralakatte in south, it will lead to a jump in population figures.

Mangalore lags behind in population when compared to other fast developing tier 2 cities,i have discussed this several times on this thread:bash::bash:
The only solution to increase population count as of now is by adding more areas under city corporation limits, this will surely increase population count to a great extent:nuts:
I have seen there is more population density in areas like thokkotu, mulki, kinnigoli, ullal etc
So the solution is add these areas into corporation limits at the earliest and i m sure these areas will develop further if it comes under corporation limits, this will provide much more needed infrastructure to these regions:cheers:

I dont know how UA is determined, but mangalore ua likely includes surathkal and ullal etc as gap between UA and MCorp is around 1.4 lakhs or 25% of mcorp. I dont think they can do mangalore-udupi mcorp like hubli-dharwad as distance is too much
Everything is possible its just matter of yrs when udupi becomes a city corporation and extends south towards manglore which at present apartments are all cmup on padubidre, kaup, katpadi, etc . infact we may hav a greater mangalore-udupi region . distance is not of importance, see today the distance btwn mumbai and suburban areas of thane and beyond almost the same distance btwn mlore-udupi . undoubtedly mangalore/udupi/manipal (combined) will be the next metro on the westcoast.

^^ Mumbai-thane is 30km and hubli-dharwad is 20km. While mangalore-udupi is 50km which will take very long to be joined. Instead mangalore alone can grow now to million plus if it grows to east. Half ring road required in the east in the name of suratkal-talpady bypass, but if west half of mangala corniche is demanded then it will take long since land acquisition inside city limits is very difficult. Anyway the flyovers built for port connectivity should help the city.

Beach is one big plus for mangalore among 6 half million plus cities of karnataka. Proper beach facilities need to be developed to highlight this.
