Mangalore, June 7, 2012, DHNS:

The State government has prepared an action plan of Rs 36 crore for the disaster management and flood relief during monsoon in the three coastal districts which will be sent to the Central government for approval, said State Revenue Secretary Amar Narayan.

He was speaking to media persons following a meeting of the deputy commissioners of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada at the DC’s office in Mangalore on Thursday. He said the action plan aims at managing the natural calamities and flood situation in the wake of monsoon in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts. It was decided in the DCs meeting to send the proposal to the Central government within 10 days. The action plan would stress on factors including the strengthening of cyclone warning system for fishermen, multi-purpose shelter homes (Ganji Kendra) for calamity affected families, construction of roads and bridges in the rural areas, mangrove plantation and regeneration etc. If approved, then the Central government will bear 75 per cent of the project cost and the State government will bear 25 per cent of the expense, informed the Secretary.

He said the government has been stressing on prevention and mitigation of natural calamities. “Going by the previous records, Honnavar taluk in Uttara Kannada is most vulnerable to natural calamities. Preventive measures will be taken to reduce the after affects of calamities in this part of the region. Meanwhile, temporary measures would be taken to control sea erosion in Udupi district. A separate proposal has to be submitted to the Central government seeking permanent solutions to prevent sea erosion in Udupi,” he said.

Speaking about the measures taken up to prevent landslides, he said with the help of an equipment available with the Geological Survey of India, the landslide forecasts can be made which would help the authorities concerned to take the preventive measures as far as landslide is concerned, he said.

Aggressive posture

Karnataka, trying to hard sell its tourism sector globally, did some aggressive marketing of its heritage sites, coastal lines, religious places and wildlife spots to the prospective investors at the second edition of the Global Investors Meet on Friday. The State government inked agreements promising private investment of about Rs 35,000 crore.

Karnataka, in terms of tourist inflow, occupies fourth position in the country, while Andhra Pradesh stands first. In 2010, Karnataka witnessed 3.85 crore tourist footfall, while it went up to 8.46 crore in 2011 due to aggressive marketing of tourism sector. The aim is to reach 10 crore by in the next couple of years.

If the promises made at the GIM over the last two days stands true, seaplane service, an international golf course in Mangalore, an ayurvedic health resort in Hampi and more will come up. Maritime Energy Heli Air Service of Mumbai signed an MoU with the State tourism department to invest Rs 96.50 crore to introduce seaplane facility.

Vishwanth Reddy K, Director of Tourism Department, said the company intends to introduce the amphibian plane service not only in the coastal but also areas where water bodies such as dams and reservoirs are situated.

“For seaplanes, there is no need for airports. Aeroplanes directly takeoff and land on water. Dams like Almatti and reservoirs besides coast can be used for promoting seaplane toruism,” he said.

Lata Krishna Rao, Principal Secretary, Tourism, while addressing a session on tourism at the GIM, said the State is keen on attracting private investment for golf course development across the State. As the State has good weather for major part of the year, golf can be tapped as a potential tourism destination. Opus Hotel & Resorts has tied up with the government to develop a hotel with a golf course in Mangalore. It is expected to invest Rs 1,681 crore. There are about 18 golf centres in the State, and Bangalore alone has four.

The officer said the State is coming out with a Tourism Trade Act which can help investors understand the government polices and requirement of the sector better. The draft Act would be circulated among the stake-holders for feedback before finalizing it. Her response came when a representative of Brigade Hospitality group said that his company invested money to build a resort in Chikmagalur. But it has not progressed even after many years due to protests by green activist. It is better if the government makes it policies clear, he said.

The tourism department has invited public private partnership (PPP) for developing 18 tourism projects. Vishwanath Reddy said that for all these 18 projects, the government would be offering land on lease. “We want Monsoon tourism to be promoted in a big way.

Augumbe in the Malnad region has no basic amenities for tourists. So, we have private investors to develop highway amenities. Similarly, we want to develop Pearl Valley in Anekal with a resort offering adventure sports and urban entertainment. Badami needs a five star hotel. Even Jog requires an eco resort/adventure sports. We are sure of getting investments. On Friday, nine investors made commitments to invest Rs 2,487.23 crore,” he said.

Sulthan Battery, one of the distinguished tourist spots of the city is all set to rise into another level to become the major tourist hotspot with all facilities.

Thanks to hanging bridge project, if everything goes on well according to the plan, a 25 feet tall hanging bridge will be built between Sulthan Battery and Tannirbhavi beach soon.

According to MLA N Yogish Bhat who is instrumental in setting up the project, the administration is taking help from NITK for civil works, to make the bridge earthquake and tsunami-resistant while Engineer Girish Bharadhwaj will look after the mechanical part of this rare construction by ‘Nirmiti Kendra’.

“The bridge will have a length of 400 metres and a width of 10 feet. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 12 crore and a sum of Rs 4 crore has been released,” he added.

‘No problem for ferry’

For the time being, two boats ferry people between Sultan Battery and Tannirbavi, besides providing fun ride. Bolur Mogavira Sabha has the responsibility to look after the crew, numbering eight.

Speaking to City Herald, Wesley, one of the crew welcomed the hanging bridge project, though he is bit worried about his business.

He earns anywhere between Rs 6,000 and Rs 10,000 per day during summer. “However, the hanging bridge will not affect our business. In fact, the number of tourists would increase. Only old aged and those who carry luggage would opt for hanging bridge. The young always have the craze to travel by boat,” he hopes.

Another resident who did not wish to be quoted, said that ferry service would not get affected by the bridge as many depend on it.

“People who travel between Bokkapatna- Bengre, Kudroli- Bengre, Sandpit- Bengre or to Tannirubavi depend on boats for the last several decades. Now it is good to build a hanging bridge as it would help people to travel at night too. It would provide more security to residential area,” he opined.

Beach development

Shivaprasad of Bolur Mogavira Sabha said that plans are on the anvil for the development of Tannirubavi beach. ‘Yojaka,’ which won the tender to develop Tannirbavi beach, has plans to develop a ‘Matsyashraya’ (a pond for fishes) and a golf club at GMR Foundation area. Shivaprasad informed that the company has plans to develop the beach from New Mangalore Port Trust guest house to Tannirbavi church.

‘Yojaka’ Managing Director Jagadish Bolur said that the company has already bought speed boats, jet ski, cycles and other machineries worth Rs 60 lakh from Dubai. Ready made cottages for tourists are also in the list.

‘Highlighting culture’

“We have plans to highlight Tulu culture in Tannirbavi beach. Tulunadu is also called as ‘Parashurama Sristi,’ so a big statue of Parashurama will be built on the seashore. Some arrangements will be done to inform tourists about Tulu culture like Bhootharadhane,” Jagadish said.

He also said that people who live near Tannirbhavi beach get sweet water, which is a speciality of the place. So we will build sweet water well in the entrance to the beach in Tulunadu style. Obviously, we will provide Tulu food for tourists. A proposal has been submitted to Deputy Commissioner. In turn, he has called a meeting on June 11 to finalise the plans.

A formal inaugural function will be arranged soon,” he said.

Stretched out in a hue of blue and green, Ullal beach is a prime tourist attraction of Karnataka.

The beach which is known for its neat shore lies 12 kilometers away from Mangalore city. It is situated in the historical fishing town ‘Ullal’ which was ruled by Rani Abbakka Devi in mid 16th century.

The tranquil beach covered with casuarinas and coconut groves has a breathtaking view. The Arabian Sea gently breaks on the golden sands and the cool breeze on the shore makes this place a perfect hang out spot.

The beach is frequently visited by tourists throughout the year. The main reason is that Ullal has important religious places such as the Ullala Syed Madani Dargah, St Sebastian Church of Permannur, Sri Bhagavati Temple and the Ullala Adishwara Parthnatha Swamy Basadi.

The town also has the Queen Abbakka’s Fort at Ranipura. Tourists, who visit these places, make it a point to visit the beach.
Dangerous

The beautiful beach also has a dangerous side. Many people have lost their lives in the sea. Two fishermen clubs ‘Shivaji Jeeva Rakshakara Sangha’ and ‘Jeeva Rakshaka Ijugara Sangha’ have turned into voluntary life guard organisations and are always ready to save people from drowning. Speaking to City Herald, Mohan Puthran, a member of the Jeeva Rakshaka Ijugara Sangha, says that Ullal beach does not have shallow shoreline.

“Many tourists are very excited about their beach visit that they take a plunge into the sea. Many have lost their lives,” he says and adds that his association has saved more than 300 lives in the past 15 years.

Sea erosion

The sea turns rough during the rainy season. The fishing families, who live on the beach, face the threat of their house being collapsed. To solve his issue, huge boulders are placed on the shoreline which acts as a temporary break wall.

Tourist hub

In spite of several dangers, people keep returning to the beach. It is the hub of fishing activity and one can see boats lined up on the shore during the fishing season. One can also find petty shops on the shore selling refreshments.
How to reach?

Mangalore is well connected with major cities like Bangalore and Mumbai, so getting to Ullal is quite easy. The nearest bus stand is just one km away from Ullal beach. One can walk or take a rickshaw to the beach from the bus stop.
Taxis or cars can be arranged from Mangalore to Ullal.

I think number of dams constructed & proposed, Netravati diversion, Saubhagya Sanjeevani all will reduce the flow through estuary during monsoon and hence may reduce sea erosion to certain extent. And hope that construction of berms will stop sea erosion completely.

Diversion of rivers and reducing of water flow from rivers into sea has great affect on aqua ecology.

Mangalore, Jun 10, 2012, DHNS :

* Industries will come up in Tier-II cities, says CM

The Chief Minister said that the State has inked agreements promising private investment of about Rs 450 crore, at Global Investors Meet (GIM), to promote tourism in Dakshina Kannada.

Speaking after exercising franchise, at Puttur on Sunday, he said that the Global Investors Meet was not restricted to one department or Bangalore alone. The industries will come up in tier-II cities. “I have entrusted the responsibility to co-ordinate with the industries in Tier-II cities, to the DCs of respective districts,” he said.

“I am the president of Empowerment Committee. I have taken part in two meetings. If any investor feels that the officials are not responding to him, then he can contact my office directly.

Arrangement has been made to provide land, electricity and water to the investors within a day of the proposal. After taking part in the empowerment committee meeting, the investor can go back home with the government order on the following day,” he asserted.

Setting up of industries alone will be of no use to the state. Along with industries, the youth should get employment. There is a need to implement Sarojini Mahishi report totally, he said.

MANGALORE: Jackfruit, the sticky, sweet and smelly fruit popular along the Konkan coast and Kerala, is ready to cross the seas and make it to the United States of America. There, it will be savoured sandwiched in a burger and turned into many other products. Once considered a poor man's fruit, it is now at the heart of a campaign.

Global Village Fruits Inc. (GVFI), a for-profit social enterprise started by pre-med anthropology concentrator and Harvard public service traveller Annemarie Ryu is set to export 25 tonne of dried jackfruit to the US, but she faces shortage of supply. To overcome the supply crisis, Annemarie along with her local partner NV Paulose is all set to launch 'The Jackfruit Campaign'.

The increase in demand will translate into a boon for farmers here who are not able to market the fruit. Currently, a major share of jackfruit produced in undivided Dakshina Kannada district is wasted due to the lack of a proper market.

GVFI will enable farmers here to market the fruit and make more profit.

Paulose told TOI that though there is a demand for 25 tonne of dried jackfruit per year in the US, the supply here is less than 1 tonne.

"Annemarie will visit Mangalore to promote more ventures in jackfruit processing. GVFI will introduce more varieties of jackfruit products, including jackfruit burgers, if she is able to get more supply. This will further increase the demand for the fruit in the US, and farmers in India, especially those in coastal Karnataka, will get a higher price," he said.

Anniemarie will meet jackfruit farmers, entrepreneurs and investors at a campaign in the city on June 16. She will present a special 3D shooting session on 'Jackfruit economics' and interact with stakeholders.

Being a violinist, Anniemarie will also participate in a short musical concert to be held as part of the campaign, Paulose said, adding that she is expected to get more supply from India and South Asian countries too.

A student of Harvard University, Annemarie had tasted jackfruit for the first time in her life in Bangalore last year. The magical feel she had after having Artocarpus heterophyllus, inspired her to start GVFI to create a market for the fruit and help Indian farmers, he added.

The US people don't like jackfruit fried chips? What about sending fresh jackfruit finger chips processed properly so that they can just fry it like potato chips and eat.

Jackfruit of Maikala is also going to rock in the US!

KPT- marakada road has been 4laned and now footpath works are going on. it looks beautiful on the night with illuminated streetlights . airport road is getting huge highrises and many new projects are going to cm up soon. Kuntikan -kavoor road is 4laned frm kuntikan upto derebail . frm derebail to kavoor work is pending. the stretch frm derebail to kavoor is very beautiful and once 4lane is completed it will look more beautiful. similarly in kulur-kavoor road, 4lane is completed frm kulur to panjimogaru . panjimogaru to kavoor is pending . kavoor is becoming a major junction.

Yes the whole stretch has ideal environment for R&D work.. When many companies are willing to come here, then there should be mandatory of having green buildings!! Threelane flyover without lane discipline. I think Surathkal, Kuloor, Kottarachowki all are threelane oneway flyovers. Kuntikana is fourlane twoways flyover. Kuntikana flyover may be reconstructed when NH-66 is further expanded to sixlane. I remember like BC Road flyover is also threelane on NH-75 but not sure.

Everyone in Mangaluru (& India) are after lame excuses. If we ask a two wheeler the reason for driving on footpath he will show autorikshas running on footpath. If you ask car owners for parking on footpath he will show autorikshas parked on footpath. It is like that.

An uneven driving track is being used by the Mangalore RTO to test driving skills.

Latika had to come to Vamajoor a-week ago in her car to practise on the uneven driving track and this helped her in her test on Wednesday.

However, this was not the case with many, including Manoj K., who were driving on the track for the first time. “This is the first time I drove on this track. It is tough. I drove on first gear and avoided changing gears fearing breakdown on this terrain.”

Ms. Latika and Mr. Manoj were among the 200-odd motorists attending the driving test at the Driving Testing Yard in Vamanjoor. Only a few motorists managed to drive safely while a majority had problems on the uneven terrain.

It is nearly three years since the Regional Transport Office, Mangalore, had been using this two-acre yard to conduct tests for those seeking license to drive two-wheelers, cars, and buses. On an average, 100 people took tests everyday in this yard. While a longer track in the yard is used for testing car driving skills, a small track is used for testing skills of a two-wheeler rider. Earlier, these tests were held near A.B. Shetty Circle.

Motorists had been finding it hard to drive through these tracks. The problem is more so while passing through the uneven surface at places where motorists take a turn. On Wednesday, many two-wheeler riders were finding it difficult to ride on the eight-shape and were forced to balance using their legs. “Some riders lost balance and were hurt,” said Lateef K., who had come for the second time.

There were problems for car drivers. “I had problems in changing the gear and the car stopped.

I do not know how the officer (motor vehicle inspector) will look at my driving today,” said Srikant Nayak, who had come for the test after training himself in the driving school for 20 days. Motorists expressed displeasure over the use of stones to demarcate the driving track.

C. Malllikarjuna, Regional Transport Officer, Mangalore, said that a lot of effort was put in to lay the driving track in the rocky area provided in Vamajoor. “Motorists taking tests for the first time have problems, while experienced ones drive easily on these tracks.”

Mr. Mallikarjuna said the department was looking for land to have a standard driving track.

This land would be used for testing fitness of vehicles, which was done with difficulty on the premises of the Regional Transport Office, he said.

All these tests are fine. Here is advice for some more compulsory tests.

There is a marked zebra crossing now adjacent to Town Hall to cross road towards railway station road. I was disgusted to see a car drivier honking on a pedestrian halfway on zebra crossing without reducing speed and the pedestrian had to run away from road although he had first priority on zebra crossing. Another incident where a lady was crossing a small street along with her child and child fell down all of a sudden. An autoriksha driver about 10 meters away started honking on them without reducing speed and the lady had to drag the child across street.

Why these RTO officials does not test intuitive ability of drivers to apply break and reduce speed in such situations?

Along with this the drivers should be made aware of the fact that in roads were footpath is not there priority will be for pedestrianbs to walk. National guidelines mandates footpath of width 3 feet minimum everywhere and if a road does not have footpath then naturally road itself will be a footpath.

FAMILIAR TERRAIN: Lifeguards, who have been trained to man the Pananbur Beach, are credited with the sharp reduction in drowning deaths on the beach. Photo: Mohit M. Rao

It's simple and yet, effective. But most of all, it saves lives while creating livelihoods. Panambur beach saw around 119 people losing their lives in the 13-year period between 1995 and mid-2008. Yet, post June-2008, just three people, the last being in October 2009, had drowned in the swirling waters on the beach.

The stark difference was the transformation of the beach – from a dirty, free-for-all beach to a controlled atmosphere where activities of beachgoers in the rough waters are monitored by lifeguards.

The introduction of lifeguards, who are from the local fishing community, was the brain child of Yatish Baikampady, who is the Chief Executing Officer of the Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project.

“While developing the beach, we realised that there were a lot of drowning deaths. And to change the image of the beach as being unsafe, lifeguards had to be employed,” he said. The local fishing community were got in by “glamourising” the job and elaborating on the differences between lifeguard and watchman was spelled out, said Mr. Baikampady.

The idea resulted in incorporating traditional knowledge with modern rescue tools. Around 2010, local fishermen, who had been rescuing using their inherited knowledge of ocean terrain, were trained to use jet skis, life buoys, training in first aid.

A rescue operation is methodical and calculated, said Roshan Jairaj, a lifeguard. “When a person is seen drowning, two of us rush at them. Two more lifeguards follow with extra jackets or to take over in case the first two tire out. Meanwhile, the rest coordinate with transport and with first aid, so as to rush the rescued to a hospital,” he said.
Dangerous underside

Explaining the dangerous underside of the lapping waves, Sharath Bangera, a supervisor at the beach, said: “The water surface looks calm. But there are currents underneath, and the sea bed has deep pits. Even if the water comes to only knee-level, the currents may be enough to make a person lose his balance, and get dragged away by the currents.”

Apart from the rough seas, a difficult daily challenge they face is the people themselves. “While some cooperate when we tell them to come back, others, start fighting with us. They tell us that they have come from far just to swim, or that they can manage on their own,” said lifeguard Anish (24).

For the lifeguards, their duties extend beyond just rescuing drifters. They also ensure the beach remains family-friendly. “We have stopped men who come to the beach only to take videos of women bathing in the beach. We have, unfortunately, had many cases like this,” said 23-year-old Latish Kulal, a lifeguard there.

Though there is danger in their work, the reward lies in the gratitude of the rescued, said the lifeguards. In a written note, P. Malleshwara and P. Parath, two students from Coimbatore who were caught in the currents in September 2009, said: “The life guards saved my life. I will forget never this.”

I think they are going to soon start construction of a boarding yard for sea planes. My question is which could be the ideal location for it? Old port or some where near estuary? Tanneerbavi or Panambur beach? The boarding yard along beach could be some floating wooden yard like the one shown in last picture. Or else the seaplane should have ability to taxi into sand shore. (some more google search is needed.) The plane has to taxi before taking off or after landing either to seashore or to ground through backwater.

The picture below shows boarding seaplane may be using boats.

Here in India no respect for pedestrians. when I stop my car for pedestrian crossing I can hear a lots horns from behind. Motorists don't even respect a senior citizens and mother with children. Arabs are much better than Indians in these cases. They stop their vehicles whenever some one cross the roads. Same Indian when he goes to other countries he strictly follows the rules and regulations but in India no way.

Mangalore, June 16, 2012, DHNS:

* Those who have registered, will get unique legal property ownership ID cards

Survey, Settlement and Land Records Department Commissioner V Ponnuraj said that Urban Property Ownership Record (UPOR) scheme has been started in Mangalore, wherein unique legal property ownership identity cards or PR card will be issued to property owners after the survey and documentation.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, he said that the survey in Mangalore will be carried out by the M/S Infotech Enterprises Ltd, Hyderabad. After measuring and mapping of all the properties, a spatial and non spatial database will be created and the ownership of the property is decided by the Enquiry Officers of the Department of Survey, Settlement and Land Records.

Described as the first such initiative in the country and a major step in the digitalisation of urban property records, he said all transactions related to urban property will be linked to the UPOR in future. The project aimed at creating an accurate and authentic record comprising all details pertaining to the property, and will curtail land encroachment and fraudulent transactions of properties.

The UPOR project has been taken up in other cities including Bangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Bellary, Shimoga and Gulbarga.

Under the scheme in Mangalore, as many as 32 villages are covered comprising of about two lakh properties. Out of this, for 1,250 properties, measurement and mapping has been completed.

Documents of ownership have been collected from the citizens. Comprehensive database will be created by incorporating the khata details, MUDA allotment details, and alienation and government land details.

About 10 teams have been constituted to carry out the work on survey. After the monsoon, the team will be increased to 20.

The UPOR will also reduce the chance of fraudulent sale of land and connectivity to judiciary would ensure that resolution of litigations would be expedited. The other benefits of the system included a clear demarcation of government land and any encroachment of the same would be clearly indicated.

The UPOR will have the map of the property, its GPS coordinates, history of previous ownership, mutation of property records in case of sale/partition among others. In urban areas, unlike in rural, clear ownership data and titles are not available.

The UPOR will serve as legal ownership documents for urban properties.
The card would be required for all land-related transactions in the future. The UPOR would make mutations to property records automatic. For converted land, issuances of RTCs will be stopped in the future, he said.

As RTC can not handle vertical growth as it is only for the land and not multiple properties on land, he said the PR card will be given to the owners of each flat. The PR card will also be beneficial for the bankers to get details of existing mortgages, details of disputes in court, and also can do away with seeking legal opinion. After the property card is issued, it is intended to issue GO, making property card mandatory for all registrations, land related transactions such as home loans.

Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat, Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda were present.

The required documents

All the urban property owners in Mangalore should give a copy of sale deed, tax receipt, EC, Municipal khata, site allotment letter, pocession certificate, layout map to the Urban property survey office, at first floor, Old Taluk office, Hampankatta. Before visiting the houses or properties, a notice will be issued to the owners intimating the visit of the officials to measure the land.
Another office will be set up in Mangalore City Corporation limits. Depending on the response of the people, few more centres will be opened.

‘Bhoomi, Kaveri to be linked to UPOR’

Bhoomi and Kaveri software integration has been done, hence once Registration is done, entry of name in the RTC is automatic. Similarly, for Urban properties also UPOR and Kaveri will be linked. Any registration of urban will result in automatic entry in Khatha Register (UPOR). There is no need for the property owners to run to Municipality to enter Khatha in register, informed a press release.

DHNS (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/257486/property-mapping-begins-mlore.html)

I don't know how much happy will be visnaya now. I am hoping that they are going to incorporate online appointments & online status tracking features also for property registration & transfer with all other types of automation. As most of the things are getting automated now the number of tables or shelves in the government offices with pernding applications may get reduced.

KAVERI (Karnataka Valuation and E-registration)

Read 'Business Process Re-Engineering (BPR) and Computerized process' on page 11. What we may need, just like applying for passport at passport seva kendras, is online appointments and online status tracking.

Proposed 'Citizen Care Center' (CCC) may become very helpful to even illiterates to find out requirements & tracking the status of application. (Illiterates & others who does not have computer & internet knowledge. And cybercafe is not good for commonmen as they loot people for online services.)

Apart from large population, I somehow believe it stems from our history as well. Vehicles (horse-driven carriages and then cars) where used by the upper class i.e. british, princely kings, aristocrats. So it was natural then that other people gave them the way. This must have carried on...where larger the vehicle ..more the attitude.

As you rightly said, basic traffic education should begin from school as a compulsory subject.

This may be Kanara Entreprenuers Limited (KEL) Internet City at Mudipu.
As per some reports KEL is setting up its IT-SEZ at a 180 acres plot in Shakti Nagar. Whether it is setting up both?
I don't think it is Wipro as it is for sales in http://www.mangaloreproperty.com/res...aspx?ProjID=20. Wipro purchasing from KEL can not be ruled out. Mudipu locals think every building coming up there is Infosys.
The front portion of this building is fully ready and back portion is also half constructed. Located at the junction of Konaje-Mudipu road and a road towards BC road.

Construction Project “ MEPL Township” at Adyaru, Nirmarga, Kannuru, Alape, Mangalore Taluk, Dakshina Kannada District of M/s. Mohtisham Estates Pvt. Ltd. (SEIAA 239 CON 2008)

The sub committee furnished the site inspection report and the same is placed as below:

It is a proposal for an integrated township project with residential and commercial units and associated amenities such as school, hospital, etc., with built up area of 15,74,000 m2 in a site area of 12,13,800 m2. The total investment is Rs. 2500 Crores. Water requirement is 8.0 MLD. Parking needs for residential + commercial + visitors is 17,222 cars + 47 buses and the area for green belt is 2,40,400 m2.

As per the communication from Secretary, SEAC (Letter no. SEIAA 239 CON 2008 dated 06.12.2010) the subcommittee visited the MEPL township site on 12th December 2010 at 9 am. The visiting team was accompanied by Mr. Dharmaraj, CEO, Mohitsham Estates Pvt. Ltd. from the proponent side along with the environmental consultant Dr. Shobha Kamath. They showed all the physiographic features of the site from elevated place to low level areas. They also showed the locations of the proposed residential and commercial buildings of the township.

It was found that the national highway (Mangalore-Bangalore) passes between the proposed MEPL township boundary and Netravathi River. Its boundary is about 150to 200 meters away from the river. Many residential and commercial buildings have come up on both side of the highway in the vicinity of the proposed township. A natural drain flows from the proposed township site towards the river.

Based on the observations it is felt necessary to obtain the following additional information from the proponents:

1. Netravathi river water quality near the proposed development site (including Dissolved Oxygen) from authorized/ certified laboratory.
2. Water balance for each STP, clearly indicating quantity of recycling of treated water and disposal of excess treated water especially during rainy season.
3. Location of proposed STPs and their interconnectivity to ensure treatment of sewage even if any STP fails by chance for some time
4. Drinking water source and mode of transmission to the residences in the elevated places since the ground level difference is nearly 100 m.
5. Plans to prevent/overcome water stagnation in the low lying area close to highway (which was observed during the visit) as the level difference between low lying area to the existing national highway is approximately 2 m.
6. With respect to groundwater quality, report has to be submitted from recognized/-authorized laboratory to find salinity intrusion from estuary.

The Committee decided to recommend the proposal to SEIAA for issue of environmental clearance after obtaining the above clarification from the proponent.

Traffic police must implement strict rules. Day before yesterday in Balmatta road a city bus hit a pedestrian and he died and driver fled away from place. MANGALORE: For the first time in the state, the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) has opened a help desk in the 165-year-old Government Lady Goschen Hospital here on Tuesday. Two volunteers attached to the DK district unit of IRCS will work round-the-clock in the helpdesk to assist patients and their family members. They will provide help to reach their respective wards and other assistances.

The IRCS help desk also launched two new schemes - 'Akshaya Sanjivini' and 'Akshaya Ambara'. Under the Akshaya Sanjivini scheme, people can donate medicines and these medicines will be distributed to needy patients and under the Akshaya Ambara scheme clothes collected from the donors will be given to poor patients and their children.

Lady Goschen Hospital superintendent M Shakunthala urged IRCS chairman Dr Shantaram Shetty and Corporation Bank chairman and managing director Ajai Kumar, to help the hospital to set up a blood bank since the hospital requires as many as 60 units of blood every day. She said two employees attached to IRCS in help desk would also receive complaints about flaws of the hospital.

Dr Shetty also said that the cost of setting up a blood bank would be around Rs 50 lakh. "However, Corporation Bank has come forward to help start a blood storage center at a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh in the hospital," he added. A section of students of Beasant Women's College Youth Indian Red Cross Society donated used clothes and medicines to the IRCS helpdesk.

Corporation council hall to get facelift
TNN | Jun 21, 2012 (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mangalore/Corporation-council-hall-to-get-facelift/articleshow/14310901.cms)

MANGALORE: A cooling effect awaits MCC corporators when they meet for council meeting next time. The Infrastructure Development Foundation, a group of architects, who are entrusted with the work of renovating the council hall into a fully air-conditioned facility, are trying hard to meet the June 30 deadline set for them by K Harish Kumar, MCC commissioner.

The key change incorporated into the current seating arrangement will see the mayor, deputy mayor and the commissioner seated at a slightly higher level than they used to do so far. Standing committee chairpersons, who hitherto took their place among the councillors, will flank the trio on either side at slightly lower level facing their peers. Heads of key sections, who will be seated slightly behind on either side of the chairpersons, too will henceforth face the councillors

Harish Kumar told TOI that seating capacity of the hall after the renovation would increase to 98. At present, the city corporation has 60 elected councillors, five nominated and five elected representatives (MP and members of state legislature).

Harish added that there would be separate entry for officials and the councillors in the new scheme of things.

Another key change will be separate seating arrangements for mediapersons at an elevated level away from the main council hall on either side. "The media will henceforth come in through separate entrances," he said.

The visitors' gallery will remain in its present shape and form.

The chamber of the mayor adjacent to the existing council hall too will get a facelift and will be made more spacious. Likewise, chambers for deputy mayor and council secretary will be housed adjacent to the left hand side of the council hall.

"Existing furniture, sound system and flooring also are being overhauled," Harish said.

MANGALORE: The Mangalore Special Economic Zone Ltd (MSEZL) is setting up a 10 km long direct pipeline-cum-road corridor connecting its units to New Mangalore Port. The corridor will not only save cost and time for petrochemical units, but also take pressure off infrastructure.

Rajiv Banga, managing director and chief executive officer, MSEZL while delivering a talk on opportunities for petrochemicals in Karnataka at seminar on chemical, petrochemical and plastic at the recently concluded Global Investors Meet 2012said phase I of the corridor development was expected to be completed by March 2013.

"Various industrial units in MSEZ can avail cluster benefits from a central effluent treatment plant as well as look forward to adequate power supply. A 220 kv sub-station is coming next to MSEZ. The company is offering ready to use graded plots in various sizes also catering to needs of SME sector with normal items of infrastructure to do with water, power distribution, effluent handling, collections and disposal system," he said.

Mangalore SEZ is the only notified sector specific petrochemical SEZ in Karnataka.

In the SEIAA 48th meeting minutes, brigade groups derebail project cost is approximately 38 crores and they claim a built up area of 61385.67 sq. mtrs. ( 660750 sq. ft.). That works out to just about Rs. 575 per sq ft. Their figures seem to be wrong :-/

I think Bondel & Yeyyadi may not be part of Kavoor village. Pin code of Kavoor is 575015. Pin code of Bondel & Yeyyadi is 575008 (Konchady Village).

we have only ward maps, not village map in the government website

It would be useful if 'google map' or better 'openstreet' identifies village & pin code boundaries.

This is mostly mohtishams celebrations . because i heared about a crystal tower in their township and further in the website it mentions it will be situated at a higher elevation to enhance elevation and height. in mohtisham celebrations the land is divided into 2 levels, one is level land touching the highway and the other is the hills behind the level land and on top of the hills is the tallest tower situated so the crystal tower defnetly belongs to celebrations township and of course its 300 acres.

Dubai, Jun 25: "When will Mangalore Airport become international officially?" Well, that is a million dollar question, but India's fastest growing airline IndiGo could well be the first private airline to fly Dubai - Mangalore directly, pending approval from the Indian government.

This was revealed by Aditya Ghosh, the young and charismatic president of IndiGo Airlines at a press conference held at Grand Hyatt to announce the daily direct flights from Dubai to Hyderabad, Chennai and Kochi destinations. Currently, IndiGo has direct flight services to Delhi and Mumbai from Dubai.

http://www.tvmangalore.com/images1/indigo_062512-1.jpg

http://www.tvmangalore.com/images1/indigo_062512-3.jpg

Replying to a question from Daijiworld, Aditya Ghosh said that Dubai-Mangalore flight is their priority and that the process is in on. When he was further probed on the time frame for such a move, he said the flight operation would begin early next year, or before that if Mangalore Airport gets international status.

NRI Karnataka Forum co-ordinator Rajesh Sequiera, who has been in touch with various private airlines of India and the Gulf region to get Dubai - Mangalore connected directly, was also present during the press conference.

"It is sad that our own political leaders who hail from the coastal region, despite having enough power are not pressuring the government to announce Mangalore as an international airport. But the recent effort from newly-elected MP J P Hegde was encouraging. I am constantly in touch with him, and hoping for the best. All we need is a political leader to follow it up. J P Hegde has been doing the follow-up with central government," said Rajesh to daijiworld.

M K Lokesh, the Indian Ambassador of UAE and Mohamed Al Rais, deputy managing director of Al Rais Travel were present at the press meet.

The flights from Dubai to Hyderabad, Chennai and Kochi are expected to be functional by August 2012. The second Daily and direct flight from Dubai to Delhi also will commence during August. Bookings are already open with effective from June 15 and the early bird return offer is in the introductory low range of AED 734.

India's profitable, economical and efficient IndiGo Airlines launched an Arabic website on the occasion. M K Lokesh, after launching the user-friendly website said, "IndiGo is known for his consistency and professionalism and I am pleased to see Indigo’s commitment to redefine the standards of airline business in the UAE."

Aditya Ghosh said, "The launch of Arabic website reflects Indigo’s commitment to the entire Middle East region and the importance it gives to growing ties between the two cultures. We will continue to work hard to enhance low-fare travel options between Indian and this region.”

About Indigo

IndiGo is India’s largest airline with a market share of 24.9% as of May 2012 as well as country’s largest low fare carrier. The fastest growing low cost carrier of the world has simple philosophy: Low fares, flights on time and a courteous, hassle free travel experience. IndiGo’s on time performance is one of the best in India with the technical dispatch reliability is 99.1% making it the least number of cancellations in India. With its fleet of 57 new Airbus A320 aircraft, the airline offers 351 daily flights connecting 351 destinations. IndiGo has international flights from Delhi to Bangkok, Dubai, Kathmandu and Singapore as well as Mumbai to Bangkok, Dubai, Muscat and Singapore. Established in 1989, IndiGo is led by its president Aditya Ghosh and is promoted by InterGlobe enterprises and Rakesh Agarwal, a veteran in the aviation industry.

Whether 'The Grand City' has any cine screens?

The location is exactly where we need state bank city buses shelters. I hope MCC has checked that there is enough space for bus shelter in front of this shopping mall. The entry for this mall should not be from busstop side. It can be from Bunder road.

As you can seen from the first picture it is once again bad design from pedestrian point of view. Instead of having one single entry point it allows all types of criss cross movements of cars on footpath.

I think the project is coming up on the petrol bank site at Rao & Rao cicle or might be at one of the car service center..

The current service busstop along with fish market will become Hockey playground. As I have posted earlier also this land is donated by a couple for the purpose of creating a playground for children. All political, religious activities should be shifted to some other place and Nehru Maidan should be fully dedicated for children & sports. Mangalore can have a good 'City Square' somewhere to conduct political and other functions.

TTMC can come up along with 'Mangalore Central' world class railway station. And there should be a long bus shelter at current State Bank City Busstop itself for picking up passengers from Bunder area. Also Lady Goschen Busstop should also be innvoted and should have a continuos shelter and should allow free movement of pedestrians. For street vendors they can have place in new city market complex and also a hawker zone near new Pumpwell transportation hub. City buses will move in path Hampankatte - Railway Station - State Bank - Lady Goschen - Clock Tower - Hampankatte. As I have suggested a long busbay with busshelter should come up from Clock Tower up to old Krishna Bhavan junction.

Centre to open 5,000 skill development corporations
The Hindu (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3564774.ece)

They will train 50 crore youths to make them employable
The Union government will establish 5,000 skill development corporations in the country in the next five years involving a sum of over Rs. 5,000 crore to train youth to become employable in various sectors, Union Minister for Labour and Employment M. Mallikarjun Kharge said here on Saturday.

The corporations will train about 50 crore youth to make them employable by the year 2022.

Target

The Union Ministry of Labour alone would train 10 crore youth in the next 10 years through the industrial training institutes (ITIs) or short-duration courses. The Ministry had already enrolled 76 lakh youths this year, Mr. Kharge said.

The training would not only bring employment to many, but also prevent wastage and facilitate exports, he said.

For this, the government would involve the departments of Textiles, Industries, Housing, Tourism, Infrastructure and others, Mr. Kharge said. The Centre had set apart a sum of Rs. 8,000 crore in the 12th Plan for the purpose. Also, there were plans to open 1,500 ITIs, 15 advanced and 11 regional vocational training centres across the country in the same period.

The advanced training centre in Karnataka would be opened in Mangalore, the Minister added.

A skill development coordination centre would also be set up, which would be headed by Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

Mr. Kharge stated that the Medical Council of India (MCI) had granted permission to the Labour Ministry to start a medical college in the State.

Eligible

This followed a talk with Union Minister for Health Ghulam Nabi Azad and MCI representatives recently. Hundred children of insured (ESI) employees would be eligible to secure admission to the college, he said.

Also, the Labour Ministry planned to introduce over 1,400 short-term courses with the help of non-governmental organisations.

The Ministry would issue certificates to the candidates. He stated that his Ministry had proposed to set up ITI centres, in association with State governments, in north-eastern States, hilly areas with tribal settlements and particularly areas with naxal activity to motivate youth to take up constructive work.

To a query, he said a political party was important in a democracy, not individuals or caste factors. The Congress had always won in any election when it fought as a cohesive unit, Mr. Kharge stated.

What is this ATC.. How will this help locals..?

‘Green wall’ to check sea erosion soon
The Hindu (http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Mangalore/article3565653.ece)

Western Ghats Task Force (WGTF) has planned to form a “Green Wall” along the 164-km coast in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada to check sea erosion.

Task force Chairman Ananth Hegde Ashisar said this after inaugurating a drive to plant saplings at a function organised by the Forest Department and WGTF at Thenkila in Puttur. The task force would plant saplings along the coast to prevent sea erosion instead of creating a wall of boulders as was being done now.

Stressing the need to conserve the environment, he said that they aimed at making every village “green”.

He urged schoolchildren to take part in environment conservation drives to save the Western Ghats after completing their education.

Around 150 saplings were distributed to schoolchildren on the occasion.

Mr. Ashisar later told presspersons that the State Government was planning to open a rehabilitation centre for victims of endosulfan as the pesticide had led to various illnesses among the people in Dakshina Kannada. He said that victims of endosulfan had also been identified in Bhatkal.

PROPOSAL

The forest committees in 4,000 villages would look after forest produce in the Western Ghats in the future. The WGTF had submitted a proposal to conserve the rivers in the Western Ghats and had directed private companies which were into hydel and irrigation projects to pay 10 per cent of their profit to the Government, he said. He said that the Government had not given permission to any major projects such as mining in the Western Ghats. It was the responsibility of the Government and people of the State to protect and preserve the Western Ghats.

Mallika Prasad, MLA, spoke.

I don't think that is the right render. The specification of 'hara' (garland) of jasmine matches well with the render in Mohtisham website. The building should be of white color like jasmine. I think the same jasmine garland pattern will be repeated for all buildings in the township.

Mohtisham (www.mohtisham.com) celebrations
http://www.mohtisham.com/images/Thumbnails/celebrations.gif

Context:
Space Matrix was engaged to design a landmark high-rise residential development that would redefine the Mangalore skyline.

Challenge:
The site itself, as well as campus requirements presented several challenges, all of which needed to be addressed during the design phase. The campus strictly adheres to sustainable principles, and one of the requirements was that the structure must generate some, if not all, of its own power. In addition, several other factors needed to be considered for their effect on heating and cooling requirements. We needed to maximise the use of natural light and ventilation, at the same time taking into account the effects of thermal gain. We also needed to address factors such as wind velocity, and the effects of shading and reflection on immediate surroundings.

Solution:
The design draws inspiration from the project logo, the jasmine flower. The petal represents the unit plans, the flower symbolises the floor plate and the building’s structural system embodies the Hara (garland). The tower is positioned on the highest point of the 300-acre campus to enhance the elevation and appearance of height. The three-winged design maximises the view from all angles providing unparalleled vistas across the campus. The addition of a free form screen wrapped around the building provides a practical barrier to high wings without detracting from the outlook, and making the terrace garden usable in all weather. The building screen is also used to mount photovoltaic cells that generate solar power for residents, and thereby supporting the sustainable principles of the campus. Crystal Tower is where practical building design combines with appealing design to create a unique and unrivaled structure.

I would have also preferred an undersea restaurant.

Tanneerbavi will also have seaplane yard nearby I think. I would also like to have Submersible Watercraft facility soon in future nearby Oceanarium. (Sorry, no idea on cost.)

It may be a case of entitlement delayed and denied for beneficiaries of low income group houses in Ullal near here as their 10-year wait for houses may not ever yield a positive outcome.

A total of 390 houses constructed over a nine-acre plot in 2002 under the Ashraya Scheme at Ombathukere in Ullal didn't see any occupation due to a decade-old court case over sanitary facilities in the area.

With hardly any takers for the project that seems to be jinxed by a cocktail of bad planning, superstition and snakes, officials in the Ullal Town Municipal Council (TMC) are now mulling over a proposal to convert the area into a lodge and a park.

“When we went to see the area, there were huge snakes. I shudder to think what will happen if people actually move into the colony,” said Kumari Bhavani, vice-president of the council. Moreover, she added that the area, which houses nine “sacred” lakes and the Rajarajeshwari temple, was also surrounded by local superstition which deterred many, including the landless, from applying for houses here.

“Instead, we thought we could build a lodge to house pilgrims of the temple, who come from across the State. Tourists would not have to deal with snakes on a daily basis, and the area that locals considered haunted can be turned into a park,” Ms. Bhavani said.

In the 10 years, through seasons of monsoon and summer, the walls have crumbled, roofs have caved in, and the mud floors are overrun by shrubs.

There are no sanitary lines, no doors, windows, power lines or roads, making the houses “unliveable”.

Even though, the court-ordered project of setting up an underground drainage network in the area, which also provides sanitary facilities to the houses, saw some progress recently, the fate of the project hangs in the balance.

Sheena Naik, Chief Officer of Ullal TMC, said the issue of what to do with the houses would be taken up only after completion of the Rs. 65.71-crore drainage project. “After the drainage work is completed, we will review details of the project. If we decide to continue, we may have to ask for additional funds and update the beneficiary list, which is 10 years old,” he said. Updating involved crosschecking whether beneficiaries were still in Ullal and were still living below poverty line, Mr. Naik added.

However, the authorities will face the problem of retrieving the list. With no official from 2002 still with the TMC, its president Basil D'Souza stated that the list was with the zilla panchayat, while panchayat officials claim to have nothing to do with the project. Officials at the Deputy Commissioner's office remained non-committal on the whereabouts of the decade-old list.

Stuck in the bureaucratic wrangle were the beneficiaries, most of whom, had given up, said Ms. Bhavani.

Sixty-year-old U.K. Hussain is an example of this. Having applied for a house a decade ago, the endless wait forced him out of Ullal and into Kumbala in Kasargod district in Kerala where he lives in a rented house.

“He has given up on the house, and moved out five years ago. Having had his leg amputated, he could not find work. Eventually, he had to move out as he could not afford the rent at Ullal,” said his brother U.K. Abdulla, who still represents his case here.

Is something wrong here: to reach Mumbai from Dubai in 5Hrs and then take flight next day at 10a.m, what the passenger do till that time ( almost 15hrs)? instead if he take some other flight in night he can reach mangalore in the night it self.

Dubai, Jun 27: SpiceJet Airline which started Dubai - Mumbai flight operations recently is now connecting Mangalore via Mumbai airport. The current schedule may not be convienent for coastal based passengers, but for those who can afford to stay a night in Mumbai this may be the best option.

The flight takes off from Dubai at 2.45 pm and arrives in Mumbai at 7.15 pm. The connecting flight to Mangalore takes off at 10.25 am the next day, and will arrive in Mangalore at 11.55 am.

Cricket Academy in City soon
Deccan Herald (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/260155/cricket-academy-city-soon.html)
Efforts are on in full swing for cricket stadium in city, say KSCA officials

Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has pledged to construct a full fledged cricket stadium in city, said KSCA Mangalore Zone Chairman Dayanand Pai.
He was addressing a gathering during the prize distribution ceremony of First division league championship 2010-11 at Mangalore Club in city on Tuesday. “It is sad that Mangalore, which has all the other facilities, lacks a turf pitch and stadium.

The Association is striving hard to find land. We are assuring the cricket lovers in Mangalore that the stadium will be a reality soon,” he said. “Many business groups are coming forward to support us in this venture. We also have the hope that Chief Minister, who is from this area, will help in our efforts,” he added.

He also extended his support in providing scholarships for the financially backward talented cricket players from the city.

KSCA coordinator to Mangalore Zone A V Shashidar said that the RC (Royal Challengers)-KSCA Cricket Academy will soon function in Mangalore at Adyar Sahyadri College. He said that lack of infrastructure obstructs the development of cricket and cricketers in the city.

“Compared to other moffusil zones of KSCA, Mangalore has much more talented players who could well represent the state in national level. But the irony is that other zones have better facilities than Mangalore, but development is in slow pace,” he said.

Facilities at moffusils

A V Shashidar said that cricket development is not only concentrated in Bangalore nowadays. “Earlier if anyone wanted to get recognition in cricket, one had to play in Bangalore.

But now KSCA is providing all facilities at moffusil zones too. For the first time, moffusil teams are getting prize money in first division league. KSCA has allotted total prize money of Rs 27 lakh for the moffusil zones. Now all the moffusil zones of KSCA are having full fledged cricket academies.

College tourney

KSCA Mangalore Zone Convener Dr Srikanth Rai opined that the cricket in schools should get more importance. “As far as the game is concerned, development should take place from the grassroots. Schools are the best places to find out the budding talents.

We are already having school cricket tournament, which comprises of teams from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu,” he said. Apart from school tourney, KSCA will also start cricket tournaments for Colleges in the Zone soon.

Prize distribution

City Cricketers, the champions of the First Division Cricket Championship received a cash prize of Rs 75000 during the function.

Runners-Up Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association was given away a cash prize of Rs 60000 while Mangalore Sports Club and Mangalore Occasionals shared prize money of Rs 30000 each during the prize distribution ceremony.

Sachin Kumar (207 runs from 5 matches) and Sampath Kumar (16 wickets from 5 matches) were awarded best batsman and best bowler. KSCA Mangalore Zone Chairman Dayanand Pai and KSCA coordinator to Mangalore Zone A V Shashidar distributed the prizes.

MUMBAI, JUNE 29:

The hospitality group plans to open 50 new properties by 2014-15 in cities such as Raipur, Bhopal, Tirupati, Chennai, Coimbatore, Vadodara, Vapi¸ Surat, Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Gurgaon and Jalandhar.

IntelliStay Hotels was acquired by Apodis Hotels and Resorts this year. Apodis Hotels and Resorts Ltd is a pan India hotel operator, developer and investor with interests in the budget, mid-market and leisure hospitality segments.

“The investment size, however, is open ended in their arrangement with Apodis Hotels and Resorts. The investment will match the pace of inventory expansion,” said Mr Prashanth Aroor, Managing Director, IntelliStay Hotels.
