Biarritz

Still in France, but now in Euskal Herria (Basque Country). As you can see, there is the ocean there. So I didn't took pictures all the time. Yet, a day, the weatehr was grey so I took pictures. And the last night, I was drunk but I managed to take some night shot.

The Côte des Basques (Basques' coast) is a beach where I often go. The other one is the Grande Plages, but I only have it in night shot.

Le Rocher de la Vierge (Virgin's Rock) is a rock on the ocean. Biarritz in the place where mountains meet the ocean.

The Villa Belza, is the most famous house here. It was built by a rich Gascon a lot time ago. This is why the name is neither in French of Basque but in Gascon (Occitan dialect).

The city itself by day. You can see the port, a few palaces and the outside of Sainte Eugènie.

Here are the night shots, they aren't that good. But I wasn't in full condition. You can see the Grande Plage (Great Beach), with the Casino behind it. And in the distance is the Hotel Royal du Palais, wich was a palace built by the royal family of France and converted in an hotel. It has its own church in front of it and the lighthouse in behind it.

The pictures of the seashore are also wonderful. Well, it´s fine to see maybe a typical town in Gascony.

Cold, but otherwise you can see a great location, especially the local architecture. Thanks Exarchus for the pics.

Thanks a lot for your comment, though Biarritz is in the Basque Country, or Vasconia if you prefer. Gascony is very close though.

Thanks for the specification. Now I remember. Although having some knowledge about geography and architecture of Europe, there is still somethinh new to learn.

Beautiful post, Exarchus. I have a question for you, though. If you wouldn't say that, I'd say that the name of this house is basque, because belza or beltza means "black" in basque. ¿What does it mean in gascon?

Just curiosity.

Yes, that's it. Mmmmm, as we say in spanish, you will never go to bed without having learned something new. I didn't know it was the same in gascon.

The Gascon language had a large Basque influence. And that's not a new thing. I know the two languages share a lot of vocabulary but I don't know what words.

I found an occitan web page a couple of years ago which had a section about the relation between gascogne and basque country, and I think it had a list of common words, but I don't remember right now. I'll tell you the URL if I find it again.

Gascon itself has minor dialects though, Landese, Aranese, Toy.... wich make the study very hard.

It should also be noted that many Gascon nobles were of Basques origins (I mean, from the Euskadi).
