If i had 3 wishes it would be to have saved The Federal Coffee Palace, The Australian Building and the Fish Markets from demolishion.

Honarable mention to the Finks Building which burnt down and the Colonial Mutual Life (CML) building on Collins St.

Cheers

Nice work Collector!

Havne't seen fish markets before! They are/were great! When were they demolished? What is there now? Are were they on the river side of Flinders street?

The Fish Markets were built in 1891 and was demolished inlate 1950's. It was a great building with a tower rising to 122ft/37m.the building stretched 180m/600ft.
I dont think anything occupies the site yet?

The FINKS bldg was a real loss. In 1888 it was one of tallest skyscrapers in World at 10storeys/43m. It was completely guttered by fire on Nov 21,1897, but its French renaissance style facade was saved and its internal frame/floors rebuilt. It stood for another 70 years and was finally pulled down in 1967.go figure?
Finks definatley needed an overhaul/

See, now why did they have to demolish the Fiah Markets when King St still continued south towards the River. They could have kept the markets, left Flinders St at ground level and extended King St over teh river to South Melbourne without us losing a very important heritage building!!!!

Great thread !
Fish market was simple a superb building

I just wish that Flinders St Station will be renovated and brought back to its former glory !! I mean the halls etc in second and third floor.
It was used for lots of parties by the Melbourne socialites back then if i am not mistaken !

LOL

Young & Jackson & surrounds was more neon dripping than it is today. A Channel 7 ticker & a Crown counter don't seem to cut it.

Wow, and look @ the crowds pouring in and out of Flinders Street Station, obviously due to there being only 2 (well 2 1/2) stations in the CBD @ the time.

^ isnt sydney central? have you read that or assume? does it go on passenger thouroughfare or trains stopping and leaving? how many platforms does flinders have?
so many questions, so little time.lol

fact sheet from railcorp>
Sydney's Central Station is Australia's busiest railway station. Each day almost 2000 trains arrive and depart (melb-1500) , carrying 120,000 people.(melb-105,000) What very few of them, or those walking, driving and riding in the area, realise is just what goes on above and below the station.

The first Central Station opened in 1855 with one platform, the second opened on the same site in 1874 with two platforms. The third and current station opened in 1906 on 10 hectares with 26 platforms (melb-14) It has 15 original platforms. Platforms 16-19 came in 1914 and between 1916 and 1921 an additional storey and clock tower were added. Electric train platforms came between 1926-29.

The Australian Railway Historical Society of NSW runs tours of Central Station. These are not just for train enthusiasts.

sorry to question s teves original statemant but ive always wondered.

here are some facts thus far>

Sydney
platforms-27 (4 underground)
trains -arrive/depart per day-2000
carry people per day-120,000
original station-1855
current bldg-1921
longest platform ?
clock tower height-68m (76m flagstaff)

Melbourne-
platforms-14
trains-arrive/depart per day-1500
carry people per day-105,000
original station-1854
current bldg-1910
longest platform (no1)-708m (4th longest in world) (Kharagpur in India is longest at 1072m)
clock tower height-54.5m (61m flagstaff)

So as you can see, central seems larger and busier?
Central also has a Lightrail station.

Central is like a combination of Southern Cross and Flinders St as doesnt Central take interstate trains?

State Govt (http://www.doi.vic.gov.au/DOI/Internet/transport.nsf/AllDocs/AB47B5F09BEEAB39CA256C37000EE083)

The site of Flinders Street Railway Station has been the central point of Melbourne's rail system since 1854. By the 1880s, the original makeshift buildings were considered inadequate. Finally, in 1899, a competition was held for the design of Flinders Street Station buildings and approaches. Seventeen entries were received. On 22 May 1900 the first prize was awarded to J.W. Fawcett and H.P.C Ashworth.

Work proceeded slowly until the Victorian Railways took over responsibility for the construction from the contractor on 15 August 1908. It was completed in 1910, unveiling a building that has fascinated Melbourne and visitors ever since.

Each week, more than 10,300 passenger-carrying suburban train services operate to and from Flinders Street Station.

On an average weekday, more than 110,000 people pass through the station and its ten platforms.

At 708 metres long, platform 1 is the fourth longest railway platform in the world.

Southern Cross Station
In 2002, the station handled 55,000 passengers a day.

I think they are different because Central is more a combination of both SCS and Flinders St because of the interstate and country line trains whereas FSS is more than 90% suburban trains its not so not easy to compare acurately! Chalk and cheese really.

LOL my dicks bigger than yours again?? eh
BTW there is no comparision between the two stations for impressive looks and functionaily and the last time I was at Central it was rundown and dirty ( a bit like most of the Sydney stations)
